WWW.DIGITALTRENDS.COMVintage voice message returns to its creator 70 years laterDid you know that “talking postcards” were once a thing? Back in the 1940s and 50s, tourists in the U.S. might pop into a coin-operated Voice-O-Graph booth to record themselves speaking about their trip, with their tales ending up on a lacquer-coated record that they could then mail to friends or relatives. A BBC report this week revealed how one such Voice-O-Graph was recently reunited with its creator 70 years after she sent it. Recommended Videos British-born Valerie Stannard recorded the talking postcard in a Voice-O-Graph booth on the 90th floor of the Empire State Building in 1955. She sent the six-inch record to her parents back in the U.K., and decades later it ended up in a warehouse where it was discovered by record dealer Joel De’ath. After listening to the recording, in which Valerie wishes her mother a happy birthday before saying how much she’s enjoying her trip, Joel felt motivated to find out more about the woman who sent it. He put the word out on social media, and before long he’d tracked down the 90-year-old Brit in her new home in Canada. Valerie told the BBC she was astonished to receive the record after so many years, and said listening to it again “put a whole different perspective on my past life.” She added: “It reminded me of who I used to be, and it was like regaining contact with my past life … it was a magical experience for me, to transform me back to that time.” Asked why she’d opted to record a Voice-O-Graph rather than grab a pen and write something, Valerie explained that she wanted to send something “more personal than a postcard” because she knew her mother would receive it around her birthday. Joel described the Voice-O-Graph as “a WhatsApp voice note that takes about a month to arrive,” adding, “I just find them absolutely fascinating, because as much as I’m a fan of rare records, this is a complete one-off.” The record dealer — a man who knows more than most about valuable recordings — said: “Every record tells a story, and I think this one more so than most because it’s so unique. It’s just a little time capsule, and I’m so glad that I went to the effort to track down Valerie and to be able to share what she recorded 70 years ago. It’s been a great process to be a part of.”0 Commentaires 0 Parts 81 Vue

ARSTECHNICA.COMJapanese railway shelter replaced in less than 6 hours by 3D-printed modelConcrete examples Japanese railway shelter replaced in less than 6 hours by 3D-printed model Custom-printed shelters could help fix up rural train stops faster. Credit: West Japan Railway Company A rendering of the 3D-printed rail station, recently installed at Hatsushima Station in Wakayama Prefecture. Credit: West Japan Railway Company Story text Size Small Standard Large Width * Standard Wide Links Standard Orange * Subscribers only Learn more Hatsushima is not a particularly busy station, relative to Japanese rail commuting as a whole. It serves a town (Arida) of about 25,000, known for mandarin oranges and scabbardfish, that is shrinking in population, like most of Japan. Its station sees between one to three trains per hour at its stop, helping about 530 riders find their way. Its wooden station was due for replacement, and the replacement could be smaller. The replacement, it turned out, could also be a trial for industrial-scale 3D-printing of custom rail shelters. Serendix, a construction firm that previously 3D-printed 538-square-foot homes for about $38,000, built a shelter for Hatsushima in about seven days, as shown at The New York Times. The fabricated shelter was shipped in four parts by rail, then pieced together in a span that the site Futurism says is "just under three hours," but which the Times, seemingly present at the scene, pegs at six. It was in place by the first train's arrival at 5:45 am. Either number of hours is a marked decrease from the days or weeks you might expect for a new rail station to be constructed. In one overnight, teams assembled a shelter that is 2.6 meters (8.5 feet) tall and 10 square meters (32 square feet) in area. It's not actually in use yet, as it needs ticket machines and finishing, but is expected to operate by July, according to the Japan Times. The structure itself is made of mortar, layered like dull-green frosting by a 3D-printing nozzle, reinforced by steel and framed at its edges by concrete. The result is a building that has "earthquake resistance similar to that of reinforced concrete houses," according to West Japan Railway (JR West), and costing about half of what the shelter would cost to build with traditional reinforced concrete. It also has a mandarin orange and scabbardfish embossed into its sides. The rail company told the Times that it hoped this kind of construction could keep remote stations active at lower costs and with fewer workers. “We believe that the significance of this project lies in the fact that the total number of people required will be reduced greatly,” Ryo Kawamoto, president of JR West's venture capital arm, told The New York Times. Trump is doubling down on tariffs on China, introducing fresh revisions to levies on the country. In an executive order on Tuesday, he raised reciprocal tariffs on China from 34% to 84%. He also tripled the levies and postal fees on small packages under $800. President Donald Trump made two major changes to his levies on China as trade tensions between the US and China continue to escalate. In an executive order on Tuesday, the president outlined the two new changes — raising tariffs on China to 104% and tripling tariffs on low-cost parcels. The order came hours before Trump's reciprocal tariffs took effect on Wednesday morning. He first announced the tariffs on April 2, a day he's been calling "Liberation Day."He imposed a baseline 10% levy on goods from 185 countries, with some countries hit harder. Some countries were hit harder than others — the European Union was hit was a 20% tariff, Vietnam with 46%, and Lesotho with 50%.Raising tariffs on China from 34% to 84%Trump's executive order on Tuesday wrote that, as of Wednesday, the reciprocal tariffs on China would be raised from the 34% he announced on April 2, to 84%.This is on top of 20% tariffs already in place — bringing the total tariffs on China to 104%.This change is in "recognition of the fact that the PRC has announced that it will retaliate against the United States," per the executive order. This is the largest escalation between the two countries in recent months, matching and surpassing Trump's campaign trail promise of imposing tariffs of more than 60% on Chinese goods if elected.Trump first imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods in February before increasing them to 20% in March. Both times, China retaliated quickly to Trump's tariffs. In February, China imposed a 10% tariff on crude oil and agricultural equipment and a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas.In March, China introduced a 10% tariff on US soybeans, pork, and beef imports and a 15% tariff on chicken and cotton imports.Following Trump's April 2 announcement, China hit back with its own 34% tariffs against the US, which will take effect on Thursday. As of press time, China has yet to respond to the latest 104% tariffs.China's Commerce Ministry said Tuesday that Trump's tariffs were "completely groundless" and a "typical unilateral bullying practice.""China will never accept this. If the US insists on its own way, China will fight to the end," the commerce ministry said in a statement. Increasing de minimis tariffsOn April 2, Trump announced via an executive order that he would remove the de minimis tariff exemption loophole for packages costing less than $800 from China and Hong Kong.He said a 30% levy would be imposed on these packages from May 2. But on Tuesday, Trump tripled it to 90%.According to the Tuesday executive order, he also increased the per postel item fee on goods entering the US after May 2 and before June 1 from the planned $25 to $75.After June 1, the fee was originally supposed to be $50 — but it's now $150, per the executive order.Representatives for Trump did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. GIZMODO.COMMrBeast Sues Former Employee for Allegedly Stealing Company SecretsBy AJ Dellinger Published April 8, 2025 | Comments (14) | MrBeast speaks at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles © Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images MrBeast has a new game: work for Beast Industries without stealing company secrets. According to Jimmy Donaldson (better known as MrBeast) and his company, a former employee failed the challenge. In a complaint first spotted by Polygon, MrBeast is suing a former contractor for allegedly breaching his contract, stealing trade secrets, and—certainly the most creepy of the accusations—installing hidden cameras throughout the company offices. The alleged culprit at the heart of the complaint is Leroy Nabors, an IT contractor who was brought on in 2023 to work on the Beast Industries IT network. He allegedly started working on servers that “housed post-production Beast content” and he subcontracted out some of the tasks to Vine Networks, an IT company managed by Nabors’ daughter. That apparently went well, as Nabors was moved to a “special projects” team in late 2023 as a full employee, working with the company’s development department tasked with handling “content production,” “fundraising,” and “political advocacy”—all work that was outside of the IT tasks that he was initially brought in to do. Nabors worked on that team until October 1, 2024, when he was fired according to the complaint. After Nabors was fired (the complaint doesn’t go into the details as to the why of that termination), Beast Industries discovered that they had allegedly downloaded “more than one thousand Beast confidential files from the Company’s Google Vault,” including documents that the company claims were “highly confidential” and contained information about “business strategy, financial information, capitalization tables, financing documents, individual employee personal information, and other MrBeast intellectual property.” Nabors allegedly downloaded those files on September 23, 2024—just over a week before he was let go—because he sensed that his firing was coming. In addition to discovering the documents had been downloaded, Beast personnel apparently also spotted cameras installed around the office after Nabors’ departure. According to the complaint, Nabors was “well-known among colleagues to surreptitiously record meetings.” The complaint accuses Nabors of installing and operating the cameras. Nabors and his daughter have an interesting history. A 2022 lawsuit alleged that he “diverted millions of dollars in revenue and profits” from Edu-Net, an IT company he started, to HSC Solutions, a competing company run by his daughter. But things have been getting mighty litigious in the MrBeast universe lately, too. Donaldson and his company were sued last year by contestants on his Amazon show Beast Games for sexual harassment and chronic mistreatment. A former employee of MrBeast also published a video in 2024 calling the biggest YouTuber around a “sociopath,” which led to Donaldson lawyering up and filing a cease-and-desist.
