LAYER celebrates 10 years of innovative design with 101010 exhibit at Milan Design Week 2025
LAYER is an acclaimed and innovative design studio founded by Benjamin Hubert. What better way to celebrate their 10th anniversary than with a landmark exhibition at the Milan Design Week 2025. Entitlted “101010”, it’s a tribute to the past ten years and a look forward to the next 10 years, held at the iconic 10 Corso Como from April 7th to 13th. This exhibition promises a captivating look back at a decade of transformative work while boldly projecting into the future of design. Designer: Layer The “101010” exhibition unfolds in two distinct yet interconnected parts. Visitors will first encounter a curated retrospective showcasing LAYER’s impressive portfolio over the past decade. This journey through time will highlight celebrated collaborations with design and fashion giants like Bang & Olufsen, Nike, Moroso, and Vitra, offering insights into the studio’s evolution and impact. This historical perspective will be further enriched by a display of the 2022 monograph on LAYER, penned by renowned design curator Max Fraser. Adding an exciting dimension to the exhibition is the unveiling of the new “101010” collection. This thought-provoking series comprises six innovative social design prototypes, each born from a collaboration with leading brands that have partnered with LAYER in the past. These prototypes, created with Andreu World, Bitossi Ceramiche, Kvadrat, MDF Italia, Muuto, RÆBURN, and Orrefors, delve into critical global challenges. From the pressures of urban density and resource scarcity to the urgent need for environmental resilience and sustainable living, the collection seeks to address these complexities with tangible, analogue solutions. Keep is a family of fermentation tools designed with Orrefors, celebrating the art of food preservation and reducing waste. Host is a modular bee home developed with Andreu World, aiming to promote urban biodiversity and encourage sustainable beekeeping practices within city environments. Light are algae-powered oil lamps created in collaboration with Muuto, offering a reliable and renewable off-grid illumination source. Collect is a portable rainwater harvesting system designed with MDF Italia and Kvadrat, providing a clean and sustainable solution for water storage. Cool are stackable ceramic cooling towers by Bitossi Ceramiche, reimagining passive cooling systems to combat heat in increasingly dense urban areas. Lastly, Shield is a versatile “future uniform” developed with fashion brand RÆBURN, designed to adapt to diverse climates and offer protection in extreme weather conditions. The new Project Room gallery at 10 Corso Como will be transformed into an immersive environment for the “101010” exhibition. Stretching the length of the space, the design will feature suspended translucent banners adorned with LAYER’s signature watercolour artworks, creating a visually stunning backdrop. Throughout the space, displays of prototypes – some revealed for the very first time – will be presented alongside material samples, production designs, and evocative concepts, offering a comprehensive view into LAYER’s intricate design process and core ethos. A central walkway will guide visitors through this captivating landscape, culminating in the eagerly anticipated display of the new “101010” collection. iPhone 16e comparison pics show off an impressively thin iPhone 17 Air
Macworld With just five months to go until the iPhone 17 launches, the leaks are coming fast as Apple puts the finishing touches on its new lineup of phones. Today’s leak puts the spotlight on the iPhone 17 Air—and it’s more than ready for its closeup. In a post by leaker Majin Bu on X, we get to see the iPhone 17 Air in the flesh and it looks incredibly thin. For reference, Bu holds it next to an iPhone 16e—which is only 7.8 mm—and the 17 Air appears to be about half the thickness, as you can see below. The iPhone 16e (top) looks downright bulky compared to the iPhone 17 Air dummy models.Majin Bu/X Granted, the phone does have a fairly sizable camera bump, but the new design, which spreads the array across the entire top of the phone, helps make it less bulbous and more visually appealing. The phone is shown in black with a camera array that matches the body of the phone. To achieve such thinness, Apple will reportedly need to make several sacrifices inside the phone. For one, there will only be a single camera, which Bu’s images show. Additionally, Apple is expected to use a smaller battery, and eliminate the bottom speaker. Of course, Apple will also offer iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models for people who prioritise these features over the design of the 17 Air, but if it looks this good, quite a few people are going to be willing to make the tradeoff. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 at an event in September. It will reportedly cost the same $899 as the iPhone 16 Plus, but with tariffs going into effect this month, it’s hard to predict what prices will be.

Ignoring Wall Street, Apple gets busy on Vision Pro 2.0
While politicians everywhere seem to be doing their best to make everything pretty difficult, the North Star for Apple remains what it always has been: creating products people seem to love. That’s what got the company through (and out of) tough times before. Now, it looks like that might happen again. The word on Apple speculation street is that the company is moving to build the next generation visionOS device. This is not expected to be the all-in-one, do-everything spectacles we’ve all been hoping for, but should be a faster and somewhat more affordable version of Vision Pro. If we’re honest, all of this is going according to expectation, with a new model of these things anticipated to appeari this fall or in early 2026. Apple’s enterprise product gets a raise Citing the usual unnamed shadowy sources, ITHome lays out the following: Key components for the new device are already being made, including glass panels and outer shells for the headsets. Electronic circuit components are also being made. The new model may reuse some of the components of the original Vision Pro. The processor will be upgraded from the existing M2 chip. There is one caveat in that the upgraded model might not be as dramatic an improvement as the market demands; it could be a little cheaper and a little more powerful, but should be seen as an interim release designed to maintain interest in the platform pending a bigger update down the line. Enterprises will love it. Made in the USA? With all that, it is hard not to wonder whether there are plans to build these things in the US, given it might be easier and cheaper to build a manufacturing line to handle the scale of Vision Pro demand in the US than it would be to transplant iPhone production there. The latter would take a decade, but demand is lower for Vision devices.  At least, right now it is. Adding grist to this particular mill, Apple partner and Vision Pro manufacturer Luxshare is allegedly considering shifting its Apple-related manufacturing for some products to the US as it responds to the Trump tariffs, according to Reuters. Speaking to analysts, Luxshare Chair Wang Laichun said the company was considering such a move, but warned that actually building new production lines would take at least 12 to 18 months. This doesn’t mean it’s going to make any such move, of course, but the two strands do fit together temptingly well — and a factory churning out a few thousand Vision devices is likely to be a lot smaller and need a lot less human power than a concern pouring out iPhones by the million. Doesn’t mean it will happen, though. Smart and spatial One more thing is Apple Intelligence. While the company has self-inflicted bruises there, it continues working on Apple Intelligence, and — theoretically, at least — it’s plausible to anticipate a brand new Vision Pro unit arriving at around the same time the company’s AI finally gets that contextual intelligence Apple has been working on. Armed with that and the spatial-based user interface of Vision Pro, these systems promise to become highly credible computing devices in their own right. See them as Macs you wear that you can also control with your voice. That was always the direction of travel but add a little agentic AI pixie dust and Apple’s Private Secure Cloud and you might yet find that Vision Pro eventually fills a space far greater and wider than pundits first saw. While Apple must continue to navigate a grim, grey ocean of economic and political uncertainty, damaging trading conditions, and nightmarishly ill-thought-through regulation, all things do eventually pass. And with folding iPhones and whole new device categories coming down the pipe — along with exciting digital health services, the company may be feeling a little bruised right now, but don’t bet against it quite yet. Your next iPhone might cost more but Apple may bet you won't notice much
With a 104% tariff now in effect on Chinese-made iPhone models, Apple is bracing for higher costs — but instead of raising prices outright, it may make changes it hopes you may not see.iPhone 16 lineupThe tariff, enacted on Wednesday, combines a 20 percent baseline import duty, a newly added 34 percent tariff, and a punitive 50 percent hike in response to China's own retaliatory measures. With the vast majority of iPhones still assembled in China, Apple now faces a dramatic increase in import costs that will either need to be absorbed or passed along to consumers. L.A. officials mull enacting single-stair reform
An update from the AIA Los Angeles chapter has shed light on a recent L.A. City Council directive for the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS), LAFD, and LACP to publish proposals for code modification that would allow single-stair multifamily buildings of up to six stories to be constructed. The chapter framed it as an embrace of a growing national movement and as an important step in combating the city's current housing shortage, which has remained at around 250,000 units.  AIA|LA cites a recent Center for Building in North America report on Point Access Block reform. Los Angeles would join Denver and Austin on a growing list of American cities considering an acceptance of the designs that have shown successful track records in European and Asian countries for a number of years.

Marathon Might be Coming to PC and Consoles in 2025 – Rumour
While Bungie’s revival of Marathon has been shrouded in quite a bit of mystery, the studio is getting to reveal more details about the title later this week. In the mean time, however, a rumour has popped up indicating that Marathon will be coming out some time this year. According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, Bungie is planning for a 2025 release of Marathon. Considering this, the studio will also likely announce the official release date alongside the gameplay reveal planned for April 12. In a post on social media platform X, Henderson jokes about his wife signing him up for a gym membership when he tells her that he will be on a Marathon grind later this year. When asked for confirmation from a follower about whether this means Marathon will be out this year, he simply replies by saying “Yes.” “Told the missus I’ll be on a Marathon grind later this year and she’s only gone and signed me up the gym,” posted Henderson on X. Bungie officially announced the gameplay reveal for Marathon through a trailer released earlier this month. While the trailer itself doesn’t give us too many details about the game aside from letting us grab some sneak peeks at its environments and sound design, it did indicate that, in some way, it might follow-up on the story threads that Bungie had first set down all the way back in the 1990s with its original Marathon trilogy. The announcement came a couple of months after rumours came about that Bungie is gearing up to showcase Marathon in a major way. Back in February, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb commented on the fact that Marathon was missing from Sony’s State of Play showcase at the time because Bungie was planning its own showcase for the game. “Bungie does their own thing usually for Destiny, they’re going to adopt that same ‘We’re talking to our audience’ strategy this year as well, so I think April,” said Grubb. “We’ll probably hear from them about Marathon, and it would just be its own thing separate from a State of Play.” In the meantime, Bungie has also been constantly updating the Steam database entries for Marathon. Just last month, the company added a few new “app types” to the Steam database listing for Marathon. This indicates that the company is getting closer to the title’s release, and is gearing up to launch the game alongside some DLC or expansion passes. Bungie has also been keen on expanding its playtests for Marathon leading up to its gameplay reveal. Back in October, director Joe Ziegler mentioned wanting to get more players into playtests so that the studio could get more feedback on how the game was shaping up. According to Ziegler, the studio is “expanding our playtests a little bit wider and wider. We’re looking to add a significant amount of players to each of our milestones as we’re going forward, and some of these big inflections are opportunities for you all to join us.” Marathon was announced all the way back in 2023. The game is in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. If you’re interested in knowing where the game’s name comes from, check out our coverage of the classic Marathon trilogy being available on PC. Edvard Munch Is Known as the Painter of 'The Scream.' His Many Haunting Portraits Show That He Was Much More Than His Masterpiece
Edvard Munch Is Known as the Painter of ‘The Scream.’ His Many Haunting Portraits Show That He Was Much More Than His Masterpiece Through 45 artworks made between the 1880s and the 1920s, a new exhibition spotlights the Norwegian artist’s sometimes divisive style of portraiture The Brooch, Edvard Munch, 1902 Private collection / Peder Lund Edvard Munch is best known for The Scream, a painting of a tortured human face unveiled in 1893. But the famous painting is only a small piece of the Norwegian artist’s oeuvre, which includes thousands of other works. Munch created many portraits throughout his career, and 45 of them are now on display at London’s National Portrait Gallery. Titled “Edvard Munch Portraits,” a new exhibition spotlight’s his paintings of family, friends, commissioners, art collectors and the artist himself. The new exhibition “shows Munch as being a more social person than is often assumed,” Alison Smith, the gallery’s chief curator, tells Reuters’ Marie-Louise Gumuchian. “It takes us beyond The Scream.” Evening, Edvard Munch, 1888 Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza Born in 1863, Munch endured bouts of illness throughout his childhood. As a bedridden 17-year-old, he wrote in his diary, “It is my decision now to become a painter.” He went on to explore themes such as love, death and loneliness throughout his 60-year-long career. Apart from The Scream, some of his most famous works are Madonna (1894) and The Sick Child The new exhibition includes works from between the 1880s and the 1920s. It’s the first show dedicated to Munch’s portraits in England, and many of its featured artworks have never previously been displayed in the country. One of these, an 1892 portrait of a lawyer named Thor Lütken, illustrates both Munch’s style and social tendencies. “It’s quite a monochromatic portrait … but if you look very closely, you can see how the sleeve merges into this sort of blue, black moonlit landscape, which is inhabited by two mysterious figures,” Smith tells Reuters. Munch was “very connected with the artistic and intellectual currents of his time,” but portraits like Lütken’s show how the artist also “sought the protection of people who were active in the areas of law, business and medicine.” Thor Lütken, Edvard Munch, 1892 Munchmuseet / Sidsel de Jong Munch’s style of portraiture was divisive. “When I paint a person, his enemies always find the portrait a good likeness,” the artist once said, per the Financial Times’ Jackie Wullschläger. “He himself believes, however, that all the other portraits are good likenesses except the one of himself.” Munch often attempted to portray his subjects as flawed, complicated people. One portrait portrays his friend, the art critic Jappe Nilssen, who criticized the piece: “He has given full rein to his vicious side and could easily have painted a more beautiful portrait,” said Nilssen, per the Financial Times. Munch also painted his psychiatrist, Daniel Jacobson, standing with his hands on his hips in front of red and yellow walls, and he depicted the Swedish playwright August Strindberg with a “demonic air,” per the Financial Times. The artist repainted this portrait after Strindberg expressed his disapproval. Upon seeing the second painting, Strindberg threatened to kill him. Dr. Daniel Jacobson, Edvard Munch, 1908 SMK, National Gallery of Denmark / Jakob Skou-Hansen “[Munch] always wanted to get beyond surface appearance to probe the inner psychology or motivations of an individual,” Smith tells Reuters. “So the portraits work on two fronts. On the one hand, they are representations of a particular sitter at a given moment in time, but also they offer insight into their inner world.” The exhibition also includes early paintings of Munch’s family (such as a 1888 portrait of his sister Laura looking toward a fjord) and some depictions of women that emphasize feminine beauty (like The Brooch, a 1903 painting of the British violinist Eva Mudocci, who became Munch’s muse). As Rosie Broadley, senior curator of the gallery’s 20th-century collections, says in a statement, “We’re excited to present this exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery to shine a new light on Munch’s deep social connections, and bring together portraits which have never been seen in the U.K.” “Edvard Munch Portraits” is on view at the National Portrait Gallery in London through June 15, 2025.
