Times You Knew a System Wouldn’t Succeed?
hopeblimey Member Sep 23, 2023 1,505 I remember the media create threads and NPD threads where we were all surprised by sales trends and how different platforms would perform. Even at the old place. Has there been a time where you just knew a platform wouldn't succeed or even overcome the competition and it felt like no one believed you here? So this is the old place, but I remember just knowing the Nintendo DS would dominate the PSP. From the moment the PSP was properly shown off we saw that Sony didn't really understand the handheld market (which was the mistake every other Game Boy competitor had made up to this point). Pretty sure I was called crazy at the old place when I held firm that the Nintendo DS would come in first by a pretty good margin. It was definitely a success but the initial hype of Sony taking dethroning Nintendo was clearly preposterous at the time. Then the PS Vita was announced and even with the 3DS' initial issues I knew it wouldn't succeed. It seemed like rather than learning from their experiences in the handheld market Sony doubled down. Were there any times like that for you when you just knew a platform wouldn't do as well as the general consensus said it would?  Last edited: 44 minutes ago Plinkerton Member Nov 4, 2017 7,386 Fair enough about the Vita but the PSP did very much succeed.   Patitoloco Member Oct 27, 2017 27,511 The PSP was a huge success, it just didn't reach NDS numbers which was galaxy big.   strife85 Member Oct 30, 2017 1,774 sega 32x. Our team in LA were as confused and walking out the theater asked their colleagues around them and nobody was sure they just watched. Which unfortunately meant the PS2, which was impossible to win because Sony just pulled a bunch of stuff from their ass with their emotion engine and such... just BS that had no foundation in reality but most people ate it up... Frustrating as the PS2 launch was pretty ass to be honest... DC had a much better lineup by that point AND was doing online gaming out of the box... it was in many ways the better machine. Even something like Tekken Tag felt like a step back compared to how content rich Soul Calibur was... Of course PS2 quickly found its footing and delivered amazing games, but it still kinda urks me that the DC faded out the way it did. That said, it cant be ignored just how much Sega imploded their console business themselves... they might have stood a better chance had the mid 90s not happened for them... their arcade and Mega Drive stuff may have been amazing, but the Mega CD was lacking (though I love a few games on it), the 32X was an abonination that should never have existed, and they completely misread the market when designing the Saturn (though the Japanese Saturn library is amazing). So even if the PS2 didnt suck all the air out of the room, I reckon Sega would have still faded away sadly... Ill never get the Shenmue IV, V and VI I wanted! Menome said: Nokia N-Gage. It was a 'you had to be there' kind of thing. PSP had an exclusive (at the time) GTA game announced for it, as well as an exclusive FF7 spinoff. I can see how people would think it would do better but you would have to ignore the premise of handheld gaming. When I saw Animal Crossing DS the first time I instantly knew the franchise was going to be as popular as Dragon Quest in Japan, and bigger than Final Fantasy worldwide. Again, it's because of the very premise behind handheld gaming. That's bearing in mind that up to that point Animal Crossing wasn't a million seller in Japan, and was just barely over that in North America at the time.  BoondockRiley Member Nov 15, 2017 926 Leancarp900 said: I don't think it was that obvious. The landscape has changed a lot since then, since smartphones have been able to produce high quality looking games, the dedicated handheld space had to change. The 3DS, as much as I love it, was carried by Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing and other beloved franchises. Your average 'normie' crowd that played time waster games or stuff like brain training had moved on to smartphone app games, and they weren't coming back to stuff like the 3DS. So if dedicated handheld gaming was ever going to survive it needed to start being able to play console level games. Nintendo are lucky that smartphones were only just starting to catch up to those kind of games when the 3DS launched, because if they'd left it any later, or if smartphones had got better any quicker, then it could have been a very different story.   OP OP hopeblimey Member Sep 23, 2023 1,505 Knight613 said: The OT title for the launch was literally "Why are you buying this? This was especially true for multiplayer games. Stuff like Monster Hunter and Dissidia made people bring it with them more often. If the metric is a system not being the highest selling thing, then most systems post-smartphone can be labeled "not successful", wouldn't it? I'm certain the reason why they focused so much on TVTVTV, Sports and Call of Duty on the Xbox One reveal was because they had the data that the things Xbox 360 users spent the most time doing with their consoles was watching Netflix and playing COD/FIFA/Madden. Nintendo also focused a lot on the Wii U's TV features back in the day, while Sony completely ignored it. I think DigitalFoundry had the theory Sony in 2012-13 knew Smart TVs would become the standard very quickly (because they produce TVs) while Microsoft and Nintendo were unaware.  Pyramid Head Member Oct 27, 2017 2,007 There was a lot of shite during the transition out of the 16bit era.

    Best Mecha Anime
In Western nations, Transformers probably served as many people's introduction to mecha; however, that beloved franchise is just a drop in the giant robot bucket. Mecha anime has been around for roughly half a century, and the theme's manga debut goes back even further. Classics like Mitsuteru Yokoyama's Giant Robo and Go Nagai's Mazinger Z helped write the blueprint that would go on to spawn timeless properties like Gundam and all-time great series such as Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Why the best time to solve problems might be the middle of the night
Waking up in the middle of the night used to spike my anxiety. I’d panic about losing sleep, which would only lead to more lost sleep, and more panic, until I wore myself out or the sun came up. But over time, I realized that those wakeups weren’t always bad. Some of my thoughts during those half-asleep moments turned out to be surprisingly useful. They helped me generate article ideas or navigate complex, ambiguous problems. Eventually, I saw that this altered state of wakefulness let me engage with life’s challenges in ways I couldn’t during the day. It turns out that I wasn’t alone. Your mind in the middle of the night In a well-known study from 2022 titled Mind after Midnight, a team led by scientists at the University of Arizona found that late-night thoughts tend to be negative, more ruminative, and more impulsive. They also found that being awake during the night increases risky behaviors and makes risky rewards seem more appealing. But there are upsides, say some proponents and sleep medicine professionals. For one, late-night thinking is now one of the only times when we’re shielded from endless pings and other distractions. And because we’re not fully awake, it allows for us to benefit from a sort of dreamy state that fosters original thinking. Salvador Dali and Albert Einstein famously used hypnagogia, this semi-lucid sleep state, to solve creative problems. “It’s a quieter time for our brain,” says Katherine Green, the medical director of sleep medicine at UCHealth in Aurora, Colorado. “There’s less distraction at night.” Madan Kandula, founder of Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Advent medical practices, credits his middle-of-the-night thoughts for helping him develop the operational efficiencies he needed to scale his business to more than 30 locations. “It’s literally when everything comes together for me,” he says. “It’s almost like this weird in-between world that I’m living in, and problems that I was working on the day before now have a pathway forward.” Kandula, a medical doctor by training, says he sometimes wakes up around 3 a.m., after being asleep for a few hours. While still in a dreamlike state, he says, “I am detached and can arrive at the solutions.” The only downside is that he can be groggy the following day. UCHealth’s Green says waking up from deep sleep—even in the middle of the night—enables us to consolidate what we learned the day before. Although consistent, quality sleep is critical—ideally seven hours or more—she says that these wakeful moments do help us synthesize ideas. “When you wake up with ideas in the middle of the night, it’s your brain activating those synapses or making those connections,” she says. For those trying to take advantage of the learnings, Green recommends keeping a notebook nearby. Write the thought down, she says, then let it go. “We don’t want those thoughts to be lost, but we don’t want them to run rampant,” and keep us awake, she adds. Why the in-between time can be the best time Not fully waking yourself up in the middle of the night is key to reaping the benefits, says Annika Carroll, a sleep and health coach based in Manitoba, Canada. The prefrontal cortex, which governs logical reasoning, impulse control, and decision-making shows reduced activity during late-night hours. That means that people are often plagued by fewer imposter syndrome thoughts, which rely on more rational brain activity, she says. But there’s one caveat when tapping into the late-night brain: If thoughts become too emotional, “it’s going to be a disaster,” Carroll says. Rebecca Zhou, CEO of Soft Services, a body care brand in New York, says it can be difficult to figure out if her middle-of-the-night thoughts are actually useful. “I try to not immediately react, and give it some time,” she says. “If the idea keeps bubbling up over the course of the day, I’ll share it with someone on my team that I trust to get their reaction and determine if it’s worth pursuing.” While late-night thoughts can inspire creativity, you shouldn’t overdo it. Too much time awake in the night can signal something deeper, and impair thinking. “If it happens consistently,” Carroll says, “I would start exploring why I’m waking up.”
