WWW.NEWSCIENTIST.COMHow to spot Haumea, one of the solar system's strangest objectsAn artist’s illustration of HaumeaScience Photo Library/Alamy I find the outer reaches of our solar system fascinating. It’s a place that we know very little about considering how relatively close it is – even its size is up for debate. It’s littered with icy rocks, most of which are detectable only by huge telescopes. But soon we will have a chance to spot one of these strange worlds. Pluto is undoubtedly the most famous of all the dwarf planets, because it was once considered part of the main lineup of planets in our solar system. But there are…0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 46 Visualizações

WWW.BUSINESSINSIDER.COMHow AI is making self-appraisals better and less painful — for both workers and managersPerformance reviews can be highly subjective, but AI may be able to help. MTStock Studio/Getty Images 2025-04-13T08:43:02Z Save Saved Read in app This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now. Have an account? AI tools are increasingly used in self-appraisals to aid workers' evaluations of their performance. They can help address biases and subjectivity in traditional performance reviews. Human oversight is still crucial, especially due to privacy concerns, researchers say. Performance reviews are not usually something many people look forward to.Evaluating ourselves is hard, and it can feel like a massive effort to sift through a year's worth of work to find the highlights.Women can find it particularly difficult to advocate for themselves and emphasize their achievements — and this is where AI might come in handy. It's already proving popular. According to Microsoft's 2024 Work Trend Index, 75% of global knowledge workers, such as architects, engineers, scientists, and lawyers, are using AI in some form. When Oracle implemented an AI performance review in 2023 and asked employees if they liked it, 89% said they were willing to be a first adopter."That shows how much there is a need and how much people tend to believe in this," Triparna de Vreede, an assistant professor in the school of information systems and management at the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business, whose research focuses on human-AI Interaction and workplace well-being, told BI.Traditional reviews have downsidesAccording to de Vreede, performance reviews are "usually a subjective exercise" — one with a lot of "power play" between managers and subordinates.Employees may think they're doing well, but they're not always aware of how that fits with the company's strategic direction or how their work contributes to the bottom line. There's also a recency bias, where a lot of the smaller things "sort of get lost in the process," said de Vreede."If you have done really great things, and then screwed up once in the past month, that bitterness sort of overlies everything else," she said. "So these are the things that our traditional performance evaluations lack."AI performance reviews can help with articulation and form statements that align with the company's business strategy and ideology. They also help managers give better, unbiased feedback, which "creates a more standardized response towards all employees," de Vreede said. "So they don't feel like, 'oh, he likes you, that's why he gave you a raise'."An objective listener is easier to open up toDe Vreede said that when using an AI performance review, people also tend to speak more. That's because they believe the AI will judge their accomplishments more fairly than their manager. That's not necessarily because the manager-employee relationship is bad. The best managers cannot analyze their direct reports' emails, documents, and project management tools the way AI can. People are often unreliable narrators. Dorothy Leidner, a professor of business and AI ethics at the University of Virginia, found this when working on a case study with Johnson & Johnson. The company wanted to figure out what digital skills the workforce had, but found that challenging."It turns out people are not great at estimating their own skills, and some people are overconfident, and then some people are underconfident," Leidner told BI. "So they spent a lot of time working with a vendor and designing an AI to use digital traces and HR data on employees to be able to infer their digital skills."Women can find reviews challengingSelf-evaluations can be difficult for women, both internally and externally."Women are consistently called more emotional and abrasive, whereas men are called more assertive," de Vreede said.An analysis by the management and HR platform Textio of 23,000 performance reviews across 250 US workplaces last year found that 38% of language used in the performance reviews of high-performing women contained exaggerations, clichés, and fixed-mindset labels. Just over three-quarters of women surveyed said they'd been described as "emotional," compared with just 11% of men.Women also tend to downplay their achievements.A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research in 2022 found that women, on average, ranked their performance out of 100 as 46, while men gave themselves an average score of 61.Meanwhile, women often pick up the slack in the workplace, taking on invisible tasks that pile up and lead to burnout."Now imagine if I have an AI that is keeping track of all my achievements," de Vreede said. "It allows us to say, 'oh, this is how we are really making a difference,' without having our imposter syndrome rising up."People still need to be 'in the loop'Several companies have already created AI tools for performance reviews including Oracle and Textio, whose AI is used by 25% of Fortune 500 companies to analyze conversations and give feedback. There is still some way to go before AI self-evaluations are a perfect solution, de Vreede said.Privacy concerns remain, and companies need to have very clear policies about what is acceptable AI assistance, as well as be transparent about what personal information and work the AI tools can access.De Vreede said humans need to be "in the loop" so that softer skills, such as communication, warmth, and likeability, are still factored in."AI can't understand it on its own, but AI can be trained to ask those questions so that the person can reflect and write about it," she said. "Then you are truly capturing the human as a whole instead of just a workplace creature."A major concern in de Vreede's view is that relying too much on AI can lead to people failing to self-reflect at all — rendering an evaluation useless. She said AI can do the hard work, but you are responsible for reviewing the results, editing them, and fine-tuning them. "What comes out as your self-reflection is not just the AI's work, but a collaboration between you and the AI." Recommended video0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 35 Visualizações

METRO.CO.UKNintendo Switch 2 games are not too expensive – Reader’s FeatureNintendo Switch 2 games are not too expensive – Reader’s Feature GameCentral Published April 13, 2025 9:00am Donkey Kong Bananza – how variable is variable pricing? (Nintendo) My twopenn’orth on Switch 2 pricing. It’s a bit long, so please scroll down if sick of hearing about it. Aside from pushing Mario Kart World to £75 they should have just gone with everything else at £70 and charging for that bland looking tutorial thing, I’m OK with it. The console is well priced. The Mario Kart World bundle is even better value. Aside from Mario Kart World’s physical price all other prices are lower than what Sony and Microsoft charge for a new triple-A game. If you buy digital, then Mario Kart World is cheaper. Switch 2 upgrades have been confirmed as costing $10, in-line with the rest of the industry. There’s a decent selection of games that will receive free upgrades, like Super Mario Odyssey. Switch versions of games that’ll see price increases for the Switch 2 version come with addition content, along with the frame rate and resolution bumps. Except the Zeldas, where it’s just a phone app along with the bumps. But those two upgrades will be available on Nintendo Switch Online. [There’re two prices for Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games: $20 for games with new content, like Super Mario Party and Kirby, and $10 for those with no new content, like Zelda – GC] The story of Switch 2 carts being Switch games with a download code looks to have been debunked. [This is debatable: at time of writing the only one that has commented on the situation officially is Nintendo Australia – GC] All in all pretty in-line with the rest of the industry. So why the outcry? I think that Nintendo games holding their price is a big problem. Switch games were cheap and their RRP was less than PlayStation 4 games at £49.99, except the Zeldas at £59.99. But aside from the Zeldas they all settled at £40 at most outlets and most were available day one for £42.50, from places like ShopTo. If Switch 2 games maintain a price of £10 less than RRP, like Switch games, you’ll be lucky to ever see Mario Kart World less than £60 to £65 physical. Nintendo do have 33% off sales on eShop, so you might see digital go down to maybe £50 now and then. Many gamers felt £70 was already a step too far, so escalation to £75, perhaps not surprisingly, has caused even louder objections. I do think, as well many expect cutting edge graphics for £70 to £75 which is something Nintendo hardware will always be behind the curve on. All the creative splendour on offer which I feel is equally as expensive to produce is sadly not as highly valued as graphics it seems for some. More Trending So I don’t see much issue with the pricing, feel it’s all worth the money, in-line with the industry and won’t cry foul and say it’s greed. But if the majority do then it’s just not Nintendo with the problem but the whole triple-A industry. Which is where many seem to be with triple-A games these days, opting for free-to-play or indies. Text description provided by the architects. The former Bell factory was located at No. 525 North Xizang Road, Shanghai to south is Qiujiang Road. There are two major structures, one 9-storey and the other 7-storey, as well as a device room and a transformer substation. The client wants to renovate it into a high-end office for rental to meet the market demanding in this region.Save this picture!Save this picture! However, the office rental market was already challenging in 2019. To attract potential clients, it would be insufficient to only improve the interior spatial quality and office services. The building's appearance would have notable significance. Additionally, the surrounding urban environment and buildings are outdated. The main entrance is at the east side of the site, close to the main road with dense flow of people and traffic. But with walled boundary, the site is not open enough and the pedestrian experience is poor. Taking all these factors into consideration, the designer and the client both agree that completely refreshing the old factory would be the most effective approach.Save this picture!Save this picture! The design team proposed a straightforward strategy of creating a "shiny, prominent, and high-profile image " – turning the façade into advertising. Through covering a silver aluminum panel curtain wall, the building not only maintains its industrial metallic gene but also becomes eye-catching with fashionable textures. The façade renovation has successfully achieved the fully refreshing effect. The client is satisfied for the renovation has promote both the commercial value and the urban vitality.Save this picture!Save this picture! We have preserved the existing floors and structures for the street elevation. When guaranteeing the fire safety, floor-to-ceiling window systems were used to fill the framework. The large glass façade is mostly kept integrity, only covering the side openings with perforated panels. The aluminum curtain wall features rhythmic concave-convex patterns on main window piers, while adopting smooth surface on the large gable walls, with limited variations. Bathing in the sunlight, this silver curtain wall looks like a flowing metallic cloak, distinguishing the building from its surroundings.Save this picture!Save this picture! The courtyard façades have been largely preserved, with only detailed refinements. We have only applied economical glass windows and metal finishes to ensure the consistency. Meanwhile, a lightweight and elegant perforated metal decorative curtain wall was designed for the main garage in the courtyard. Save this picture!
