WWW.VOX.COMThe strange link between Trump’s tariffs and incel ideology“Tariffs or this?” mused an X user on April 5, the day after Trump’s newly announced tariffs sent the Dow Jones spinning into its biggest drop since the height of the pandemic. The “this” in question was a TikTok video from last summer in which the all-women executive team of an Australian skin-care company playfully sang and danced around their office. Faced with the option of a woman joking about being a “Gen Z boss” and probable economic ruin: “Tariffs,” the X user concluded. The apparent link between a group of Australian women having fun at their office and the historic economic fallout of Trump’s tariffs in the US may be obscure to a lot of people. But for a vocal contingent of incel-adjacent men on X, the link is self-evident. “A lot of men (specifically, single and frustrated ones on the right who have a negative view of women) have a perplexingly reverse-SJW attitude toward women in the workplace,” explained Substack writer Cartoons Hate Her in March in the midst of the DOGE shutdowns. “They believe women are part of an oppressor class, who has for some reason been granted unfair degrees of privilege in the form of being hired for fun, pretend jobs.” In this reading, the Australian skin-care executives are callously celebrating their oppressive privilege by filming themselves dancing. In this worldview, the fun, pretend jobs include federally funded government jobs. These men further believe that because DEI initiatives mandate that women get these fun, pretend jobs — usually described as “email jobs” — women have achieved unnatural degrees of self-sufficiency. No longer do they have to rely on marrying a good provider for economic stability. With that impetus gone, women’s standards for romantic partners have skyrocketed, leaving these hapless men unable to get a girlfriend. Cartoons Hate Her quotes an X user who berated her for arguing that single women can be happy living by themselves. “Your ‘happy life alone’ only exists because the state funnels taxpayer money into your independence LARP,” he wrote. “I call it ‘negative prostitution’ because it takes men’s money away to ensure women don’t have sex with them.”These men read Trump’s economic policy as a project of redistributing money and jobs away from women and back to men, ultimately for men’s sexual gain. DOGE slashed away the email jobs in the government, they argue, while tariffs will force a recession that will ultimately kill the email jobs of the private sector. Meanwhile, tariffs will bring manufacturing jobs, which are understood to be the rightful domain of men, back to the US. By the time the process ends, they believe, men will be gainfully employed and now-destitute women incentivized to sleep with them, and the world will be restored to its proper order. To be clear, this worldview is deeply deluded. Even if you agree it’s bad that women have the ability to make their own money and thus don’t need to settle for subpar romantic partners (personally, I take the radical position that this is good), the economics don’t work. While it’s true that women make up the majority of office workers, it’s not true that they only work pretend email jobs. They also make up the majority of workers in the leisure and hospitality industry (selling on the floor of a retail store, waiting tables, etc.) and in education and health services (home health aids, nurses, teachers, etc.). Finally, perhaps most crucially, even if a tariff-led recession may mean layoffs from office jobs, the tariffs are highly unlikely to bring manufacturing jobs back to America. They are far more likely to raise prices and make everyone’s quality of life worse. What’s true is that tariffs are likely to make women’s lives disproportionately worse. The tariffs are expected to raise costs for American families by as much as $3,800 per year, and that burden will be carried most heavily by the people who are already poor. As Lauren Leader noted at MSNBC, women still make less money than men, and the pink tax means they also pay more than men do for basic toiletries and other necessities. They’re more likely than men to shoulder the financial burden of childrearing. Perhaps, as a consequence, women make up the majority of America’s poor. (Yet they still won’t sleep with those men on X!) In the TikTok video that enraged so many of these men, the gimmick is that the executives are participating in a girly TikTok trend within the confines of their office. The original trend began with a group of hot girls chanting rapid one-liners about their appearance as they headed out for a night at the club, their voices taking on the register of children playing a clapping game: “Boots and a slicked-backed bun! Boots and a slicked-back bun!” In the Australian office version, the women are chanting in their business casual attire around an array of cubicles. Frequently, they play with refrains that juxtapose their girliness with professionalism. “Gen Z boss and a mini!” chants one. “Five-foot-three and an attitude!” says another. It’s that very juxtaposition that seemed to strike the angry men of X as so unjust, that seemed to prove the video is more than just a bunch of women in another country having fun in a way that didn’t affect American men at all. “‘Girls just being silly’ is OK,” explains one of the men Harris quotes. “‘Girls just being silly on top of the ruins of bastions of masculinity that they just destroyed, sending millions into despair’ is not OK.” The wreckage of masculinity this man is describing is the idea that being a professional office worker should be a specifically masculine identity: the 1950s ideal of the man in the gray flannel suit, a man who does serious business to provide for his family and, as such, is afforded a certain amount of respect. It is true that this archetype has become a species in decline. It is also true that women are now more likely to work at offices than men are — but that didn’t happen because of any vast conspiracy from women to destroy men. There’s actually a very clear and well-documented pattern that can happen whenever a profession becomes dominated by one gender or the other. The canonical example here is computer programming, in part because it is so new that it’s easy to see the switches happen. From the 1940s through to the 1960s, programming was considered women’s work. At the time, the physical building of computers — the engineering, the hardware — was considered dangerous and intelligent and masculine. The laborious, sedentary grinding away of computer code was considered glorified secretary work: feminine. Women provided cheap, docile, and uncomplaining behind-the-scenes labor in an expensive industry whose glamour was all in the hardware. As computing developed, however, it gradually became clear that coding was skilled labor — what publications of the 1950s called a “black art” that called for mathematical flair and a talent for innovation: a job that was no longer considered proper for docile, patient, domesticated women but wild and unruly genius men. Programming’s prestige increased. Its pay scale went up. And its workforce turned overwhelmingly masculine. We can see the opposite effect when a profession starts masculine and becomes feminine, as we saw with human resources. As a culture, we consider jobs more valuable, prestigious, and worthy of financial remuneration when we associate them with men. If we come to associate them with women, the job in question loses prestige and its salaries stagnate. At the same time, men in large numbers will start to leave the now-feminized profession, thereby increasing the impression that it is properly women’s work. Another way of saying this is that the angry men of X don’t hate women who work in offices because they took away the jobs of hard-working men. Men stopped working in offices because women had started working in offices, too, and our culture hates women. Now, office jobs, thoroughly feminized, are held to be worthless, pointless, producing nothing of value. The only thing to do, according to this worldview, is to sweep the jobs away and replace them with good, honest factory work and push the women who held them into marriage or sex work — here considered to be equivalents. That so many online are celebrating the idea that Trump’s agenda will destroy the financial lives of women speaks to how deeply misogynistic the ideology that unites Trump and his supporters can be. The promise of good manufacturing jobs becomes not the promise of a respectable union-protected job that pays well enough for you to raise a family without requiring a college degree but of a manly job that will, somehow, force women to sleep with you. The whole project is to fulfill the incel’s dream of federally mandated sex.See More:0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 33 Views

METRO.CO.UKNintendo Switch modder handed suspended prison sentence in a first for JapanNintendo Switch modder handed suspended prison sentence in a first for Japan Michael Beckwith Published April 14, 2025 4:54pm Updated April 14, 2025 4:54pm People may think twice about modding Switch consoles if this is going to be the norm (Nintendo) Although he’s been hit with a prison sentence, a man arrested for selling modded Nintendo Switch consoles in Japan won’t be serving jail time. It has been repeatedly demonstrated how ruthless Nintendo can be when it comes to protecting its property. You’re likely already aware about its lawsuit against Palworld developer Pocketpair, but Nintendo won’t just target other companies. In the past, it has forced several emulation sites and even fan-made games to be shut down as well as slapped YouTubers with copyright strikes for promoting emulators and mods for Nintendo hardware. Now, in a first for Japan, someone has been handed a prison sentence for selling modded Nintendo Switch consoles, which will likely set a new precedent for future cases in the country. According to RKC News (as translated by Automaton), 58 year old Fumuhiro Otobe was arrested in March 2024 on suspicion of not only modifying second hand Switch consoles but also selling them for 28,000 yen each (just under £150). The modifications allowed these consoles to run pirated games, which Otobe was also accused of selling alongside the consoles. This incident reportedly marked the first time in Japan an arrest had been made in relation to modifying and reselling Switch consoles. At the time, Otobe confessed to the charges and in a hearing from earlier today, a court found him guilty of infringing on Nintendo’s trademark rights and thus, in another precedent for Japan, handed down a prison sentence of two years. The good news for Otobe is that this sentence is suspended for three years. So, as long as he doesn’t commit any further crimes, he can avoid jail time. Otobe has also been fined 500,000 yen, which is tantamount to about £2,648. More Trending This ruling stands to discourage anyone else from modding and selling Nintendo hardware in the future. That said, it’s a lot kinder than what happened to one Gary Bowser, who did go to prison for his involvement in selling devices used for hacking Nintendo consoles. Although he was let out early for good behaviour, he was fined over $14 million and he must pay it off by giving Nintendo a portion of any earnings he makes. For as effective as Nintendo’s lawyers are, though, the company hasn’t won every legal battle it’s started. Last year, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against a Costa Rican supermarket because it was called Super Mario. The lawsuit was resolved this past January and, surprisingly, it didn’t end in Nintendo’s favour. As for the lawsuit against Palworld, that is still ongoing though Pocketpair doesn’t appear to be too perturbed since it has continued to update the game, release a PlayStation 5 port, and appears to be teasing a dating sim spin-off. People thought this was an April Fools’ joke but it looks like it’ll be a real thing (Pocketpair) Email gamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, and sign-up to our newsletter. GIZMODO.COM8 More Black Mirror Episodes That Deserve SequelsBlack Mirror season seven is now streaming on Netflix, and its six-episode drop contains a first for the series in sequel “USS Callister: Into Infinity.” The follow-up to the popular season four episode is the standout of the bunch, and with the knowledge that series creator Charlie Brooker is pondering other sequel ideas for future seasons, here are eight stories we hope he considers revisiting. “Be Right Back” The first episode of Black Mirror‘s second season imagines that Martha (Hayley Atwell), a young widow, turns to AI to ease her heartbreak over the loss of her husband (Domhnall Gleeson). Recreating his consciousness—first as a chatbot, then integrated into an android that’s an exact copy of him—seems like a good idea at first, as the freaky tech on Black Mirror often does. But as Martha progresses through the stages of grief, she comes to terms with the fact that there’s no substitute for the real human she’s lost. The episode ends with the android hanging out in her attic, occasionally getting visits from the young daughter Martha was pregnant with when her husband died. You have to wonder: what happened to it when Martha herself passed away, presumably years in the future? Did other families try to cope with tragedy with their own AI-recreated loved ones—and how did that work out? And how many android doppelgangers came into being as a result? “Nosedive” When this first episode of season three arrived in 2016, social media was already huge—but it’s since grown even more monstrous. TikTok didn’t even launch in the U.S. until the following year. Suffice to say the themes of “Nosedive” have only become more accurate, not to mention alarmingly prescient, in the past nine years. It’s set in a society where everyone lives or dies by the “ratings” they derive from social interactions, a system that also determines their economic status. The main character (Bryce Dallas Howard) sees her life spiral after a scheme to gain popularity goes awry—and the fake personality she puts on to keep her numbers up fractures in the face of real emotions. Her ultimate fate predicts “cancel culture” in its own way, but the episode is certainly ripe for an update or follow-up. How’s that world faring these days? Is it still running on ratings—or did a total collapse happen somewhere along the way? “San Junipero” © Netflix “San Junipero” Aside from “USS Callister,” “San Junipero” is probably the most beloved Black Mirror entry of all time, arriving as the fourth episode of season three. An unconventional love story infused with 1980s nostalgia that examines the idealized possibilities that come with living inside a simulation—including the lure of eternal (if artificial) life—”San Junipero” brings genuine feeling to its narrative. It’s no surprise that “Junipero” has popped up as a Black Mirror Easter egg in subsequent seasons; if the romance of Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) isn’t specifically mentioned, just tossing the name out there is like a wink to the viewer who knows what it represents. (There’s a “Junipero Drive” in season seven’s “Hotel Reverie,” as one example.) Its continuing presence means it wouldn’t be surprising if Brooker decided to revisit “San Junipero”—maybe exploring another relationship inside the simulation, its creators, or some other angle—in a future season. “Hang the DJ” Season four’s fourth episode offered a Black Mirror take on dating apps that like “San Junipero” uses a simulation to take prospective couple Amy (Georgina Campbell) and Frank (Joe Cole) on a wild “what if” ride. The “Coach” device that pairs up romantic partners steers the narrative in both amusing and heartbreaking ways, and it’s quite clear that Amy and Frank aren’t the only duo who’ve decided to rely on it. What about all those other would-be matches—and who exactly is pulling the strings? The concept of “Coach” could be deployed in a horror tale that takes things in a much different direction than the rom-com vibes of “Hang the DJ.” “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too” © Netflix “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too” The original episode, which arrived third in season five, had some problematic elements. But its killer premise and clever use of Miley Cyrus’ own fame to propel its narrative about a pop star who exists as both a troubled human and a chipper, AI-enhanced doll (Cyrus plays both) beg for another round. A sequel could potentially right the wrongs of the 2019 original, checking back in with Ashley O’s music career while furthering the rich themes of how technology can be used to exploit celebrity in the most insidious of ways. “Loch Henry” Season six’s second episode brought true crime—more specifically, Netflix-style true crime documentaries—into the realm of Black Mirror, delivering a horrifying tale that digs its truth out of old VHS tapes. “Loch Henry” wraps up its story with satisfaction, solving the awful mystery at its center while also showing us what happens to its main character, a fledgling filmmaker who realizes he’s got an uncomfortably close connection to his own subject matter. But true crime’s popularity is still sky-high, especially on Black Mirror‘s own streamer, and if a direct sequel to “Loch Henry” doesn’t make sense plot-wise, it would still be intriguing to see the show approach the genre from another, presumably just as twisted angle. “Beyond the Sea” © Netflix “Beyond the Sea” Season six’s third episode has one of Black Mirror‘s longest runtimes to date, a necessary indulgence considering all the twists and turns its story takes. First, there’s the complicated set-up: in an alt-history 1960s, space exploration has evolved to include the idea that when astronauts are on extended deep-space missions, they leave behind “replicas” that look just like them. If they have downtime millions of light-years away, they can transfer their minds into these artificial bodies and interact with their loved ones back on Earth. Conflicts arise when an anti-replica group attacks astronaut David (Josh Hartnett) and his family—murdering the actual humans and destroying David’s replica. Sympathetic to his co-worker’s agony, Cliff (Aaron Paul) lets David use his own replica for terrestrial visits… until lines are crossed and David starts to put the moves on Cliff’s wife, Lana (Kate Mara). He looks like her husband, but he’s a different man inside—and he’s not even actually a living being on the outside, either. It’s messy! And it ends messily, with David murdering Cliff’s family and destroying Cliff’s replica, meaning both men are stuck in space together as long as their mission needs them. What’s worse, now neither have anyone waiting for them back home. What happens next could make up a sequel episode—as could another story digging into the idea of dopplegangers who switch brains. Surely astronauts aren’t the only people who make use of this unsettling tech? “USS Callister: Into Infinity” Come on, you knew we were going to include this one. Season seven’s sixth and final episode is so much fun—and the digital copies that make up the USS Callister crew still haven’t quite resolved their dilemma, now that they’re all living inside of Nanette’s digital consciousness (which is now part of her organic body). How’s that going to look a few years down the line? There may be dozens of seasons of Real Housewives to watch, but surely another urge to flee will creep in eventually. Which Black Mirror episodes would you like to revisit with sequels? Let us know your picks in the comments! Want more io9 news? Text description provided by the architects. The newly designed Laboratory Campus of the Central Office of Measures (GUM) in Kielce represents a fusion of advanced metrological technology with the aesthetics of a scientific campus. Its purpose is not only to serve as a scientific hub, but also to position Poland as a leading center of accuracy and precision science and engineering on the international stage.Save this picture!GUM is the national institution responsible for maintaining the country's measurement standards and ensuring their consistency with the international SI system. Many of us recognize the noon time signal broadcast on Polish Radio—a series of beeps that help synchronize clocks with precision. This signal originated from GUM. Nowadays, thanks to the so-called Caesium fountain clock, time is measured with extraordinary accuracy and the time signal is harmonized with similar devices worldwide. It is not common knowledge, though, that the second as a unit of time was defined during an era when clocks were far less accurate. As a result, modern, highly precise time measurements differ slightly from those based on the Earth's rotational motion, creating discrepancies of up to one second by the year's end. In the era of computers, fiber optics, and GPS, such differences cannot be neglected. That is why metrologists from all over the world collaborate to adjust the time for the following year. Beyond timekeeping, GUM also focuses on calibrating scales, lasers, speed cameras, and devices for measuring sound and electromagnetic fields.Save this picture!Save this picture!Although formally located in Kielce, the GUM campus is situated on the city's southern outskirts in a sparsely urbanized area at the foot of Telegraf Hill. This location was strategically chosen to minimize environmental vibrations, the nemesis of precise measurements. Factors such as distance from mines, quarries, and railways were carefully considered to ensure the highest possible accuracy in the laboratories.Save this picture!During a visit to a Finnish metrology center, designers of the GUM campus were asked why the project demanded such stringent environmental conditions inside its laboratories. The answer lay in its mission: the campus was not only to represent Poland architecturally but first and foremost scientifically on the global stage. As a result, the campus includes highly sophisticated "box-in-box-in-box" laboratories. These facilities meet rigorous international ISO standards for temperature stability, humidity control, laminar flows, and air purity while incorporating electromagnetic shielding and vibration isolation down to 2 Hz. Meeting such requirements necessitated prototype construction and technological solutions, as no comparable reference facilities exist globally.Save this picture!Save this picture! The campus is designed as a cluster of separate laboratory buildings arranged around a green courtyard and connected by a glazed walkway in the shape of an elongated rectangle. This layout ensures structure and coherence while accommodating the complex technological demands of each laboratory. The completed complex represents the first phase of the investment and includes the following laboratories: L1. – Acoustics and Vibrations, L2 – Time and Frequency, L4 – Length, L7 – Mass, L10 – Thermometry, L11 – Interdisciplinary Metrology. Together with the central courtyard, these buildings form the nucleus of the development. Future phases will include laboratories for electricity and magnetism (L5), ionizing radiation (L8), and flow measurements (L9). Additionally, plans include further laboratory buildings and educational and implementation facilities.Save this picture! Most buildings combine office spaces with windows and enclosed laboratory areas with solid walls. Offices face the courtyard, while laboratories are located at the rear, ensuring technological access and enabling future expansion. The facades feature decorative plaster with mica in colors inspired by local stone from the Tumlin quarry, giving the structures a solid, stone-like appearance. Concrete prefabrications around windows enhance the massiveness of the buildings, echoing sandstone extraction technology. This design evokes durability, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. One distinctive feature reinforcing this impression is the visible rainwater pipes that collect water from the laboratory roofs. These pipes add visual and acoustic effects to the courtyard, creating a unique microclimate.Save this picture! The sloped site is leveraged through a stepped composition of the laboratory blocks connected by a shared elevated walkway. Each subsequent laboratory is positioned slightly higher than the last, while the walkway maintains a consistent level. Fully glazed, the walkway is designed to resemble an "internal organ" or technological installation connecting the buildings. Its sterile, white-transparent interior contrasts with the massive external forms, highlighting the technological sophistication within.Save this picture! The courtyard serves as a central communication hub and relaxation zone, fostering the free flow of ideas among scientists. Designed with steps and low walls, it recalls the ambiance of university courtyards thus promoting informal encounters. At the same time, its strictly geometric form, defined by a modular grid of concrete prefabrications, serves as walkways, a system for draining and evaporating rainwater, and containers for greenery. This modularity symbolizes the etymological essence of "measurement." The new GUM campus in Kielce is not just a center for accuracy and precision research, but also a thoughtfully designed architectural project. It harmoniously blends functionality with aesthetic appeal, reflecting a commitment to perfection in both science and the art of construction.Save this picture!
