I Was Wrong – The iPhone 17 Will NOT Bend Thanks To Their Genius Redesign
I thought the new iPhone Air was a Bendgate disaster waiting to happen. If the new 17 series’ redesign is true, I could be absolutely wrong. Ever since the iPhone 6, people have just tried bending iPhones. Something about that relentless pursuit of slimness has resulted in most iPhones being fairly foldable, and Apple’s tried really hard to engineer newer iPhones to resist this ability, trying everything from creating new metal alloys to even infusing titanium into the frame. However, the iPhone 17 series has done something past iPhones have never attempted – changing the design altogether by wrapping the metal frame around the back too. The latest prototype glimpsed through Unbox Therapy’s hands-on shows an iPhone that’s ditching its glossy vulnerability for something far more rigid. The rear glass panel – once the canvas of fingerprints and micro-fractures – is now demoted to a thin patch at the bottom. That tiny square exists solely to preserve wireless charging. The rest? Pure sculpted aluminum. Not just a frame. A structural, wrapped, contoured slab of metal that curves seamlessly around the back, swallowing the camera island whole like it’s part of the chassis and not a post-hoc bump. This evolution is far more than cosmetic. It’s a design shift – the likes of which we’ve not seen since the departure of Jony Ive in 2019. The new design transforms the iPhone into a proper unibody construction, adding substantial bend resistance across the mid-section. If that reminds you of the iPhone 6’s infamous “BendGate,” you’re not alone. What’s different here is that Apple seems to be bracing itself – literally – for what could be a generational split between form factors. With the rumored iPhone Air chasing ultrathinness to an almost daring extreme, the 17 Pro Max is positioning itself as the brawnier, more durable sibling. There’s an elegance in how Apple has engineered the aluminum to flow around the camera cluster. It softens the visual weight of the module while functionally reinforcing it. No more raised islands glued onto glass. Instead, you get a surface where camera lenses look punched out of metal – a precision-crafted effect that’s more Leica than Lenscrafters. Even the flash has migrated, nudged across the triangular array for better spatial balance and perhaps to optimize lighting angles in AR or spatial video. On the hardware front, the 17 Pro Max is sure to impress too. Under the hood will be Apple’s new silicon, a chip designed to flex across multi-threaded workloads without draining your battery dry. Pair that with what looks like a marginally larger battery and better thermal dissipation, thanks to the metal body, and you’ve got a phone that performs under pressure – whether you’re editing 4K footage on LumaFusion or stitching AR overlays in real time. Camera upgrades are sure to be significant too. Rumors say that all rear lenses are now 48MP, up from the mix of resolutions in earlier models. The front-facing camera? A sharp 24MP sensor – ideal for sharper video calls or just brutal selfie honesty. Combined with the new layout and sensor improvements, this setup turns the iPhone 17 into a serious imaging device. Apple seems keen to carve out a niche not just for creators, but for those inching closer to immersive media. Obviously, this is all just speculation, as Apple’s still half-a-year away from actually dropping the new iPhone. That being said, they DID ship a couple of tonnes worth of devices from India and China just as the tariff deadline approached. Could these be the new iPhone 17 units? Or will the 17 only ship around August and September, when Apple formally launches the device? Having a product ship that late would also probably affect its baseline price, which some people speculate could easily cross the $2,000 mark. I guess I’m just happier with my old iPhone 15 Pro for another few years… Image Credits: Unbox TherapyThe post I Was Wrong – The iPhone 17 Will NOT Bend Thanks To Their Genius Redesign first appeared on Yanko Design.

Dear Apple: Please learn from Nintendo’s Switch 2 debacle
Macworld There was huge excitement in the Price household at the start of this month when Nintendo announced the upcoming launch of the Switch 2. And then that excitement turned to bitter recrimination when the company revealed that games for the new system could cost as much as $80, even if you choose a digital rather than physical copy. Oh and then they announced that the April 9 preorders were delayed “to assess the potential impact of tariffs.” This financial bombshell was especially ill-timed because it’s become clear that the Switch 2 is considerably less innovative than its more affordable predecessor. Many of Nintendo’s hits have achieved success thanks to a fun gimmick or point of difference: the DS’s twin screens, the Wii’s motion controls, and the Switch’s twin function as a handheld and big-screen console. Even the Wii U, which flopped, at least attempted something new with its asymmetric controllers. But aside from a cursory (sorry) mouse mode for the Joy-Cons, the Switch 2 appears to just do what the Switch did with better specs. Then again, “doing the same thing with better specs” is a phrase that could have been written for Apple, especially its all-conquering iPhone product line. Regular readers will be well aware of the exasperating pattern: early rumors hint at a dramatic revamp and startling new features before reality bites and the new iPhone ends up being much the same as the previous model. That certainly appears to be the case this year, with the big redesign predicted earlier in the cycle now looking considerably less radical and the long-awaited shake-up now expected in 2027. A wide camera module probably isn’t going to be enough for the iPhone 17 to blow your socks off. These increasingly consistent reports about the iPhone 17 arrive, like the Switch 2 price reveal, at an inconvenient time. Because, thanks to on-again, off-again tariffs on goods imported from China, where Apple makes most of its iPhones, the company may have to bite the bullet this year and increase prices or at the very least hike the low end by bumping the starting storage. A 40 percent price bump is a lot easier to swallow if the product is 40 percent better, but if it’s largely the same… Well, let’s just say that being expensive and boring at the same time is not a good combination. Apple couldn’t realistically have seen this situation coming, but I still feel like this is a crisis of its own making. Year after year, the company has changed the iPhone as little as it possibly can, in order to save money, focus engineering on other projects such as Vision Pro, and leave room for further upgrades in the future. It’s been like an expert racing driver, pushing as close to the barriers as possible for maximum efficiency. But when you do that, you make yourself vulnerable to even the smallest of outside factors, and a political gust of wind just made a crash more likely. Betting against Apple (or Nintendo, for that matter) is a fool’s errand, and my assumption is that Tim Cook will find a way to make this work. He’s already lobbied his way to a temporary exemption, and may yet perform logistical miracles ramping up production in India and Brazil. But above all, I hope Apple will learn its lesson and stop taking iPhone customers for granted. Foundry Welcome to our weekly Apple Breakfast column, which includes all the Apple news you missed last week in a handy bite-sized roundup. We call it Apple Breakfast because we think it goes great with a Monday morning cup of coffee or tea, but it’s cool if you want to give it a read during lunch or dinner hours too. Have your say We received an interesting and thoughtful response to last week’s Apple Breakfast on the rumored iOS redesign, and I’d like to quote from it here. “Your apprehension toward the anticipated iOS redesign appears to stem from a preference for the familiar,” writes Gregg from Denver, CO. “However, embracing change is essential for technological advancement. Consider the evolution of language: languages that fail to adapt risk obsolescence. Latin, once dominant, has faded from common discourse due to its stagnation. Similarly, operating systems must evolve to remain relevant and meet users’ changing needs. “Historically, iOS redesigns have led to significant improvements. For instance, iOS 7’s overhaul introduced a cleaner, more intuitive interface that many users appreciated. While initial reactions were mixed, the changes ultimately set the stage for future innovations. Furthermore, redesigns can enhance user engagement. Studies have shown that improvements in UX/UI design, such as streamlined navigation and faster load times, can drastically reduce frustration and abandonment, encouraging users to engage more deeply with the operating system. “In the realm of technology, stagnation is synonymous with decline. As technophiles, we should welcome change that propels us toward more efficient and user-friendly experiences.” Trending: Top stories Next-gen CarPlay is the broken Apple promise that foreshadowed the Siri fiasco. Nvidia pledges to build its own factories in the U.S. for the first time to make AI supercomputers
Nvidia said it is working with its manufacturing partners to design and build factories that, for the first time, will produce Nvidia AI supercomputers entirely in the U.S. Together with leading manufacturing partners, the company has commissioned more than a million square feet of manufacturing space to build and test Nvidia Blackwell chips in Arizona and AI supercomputers in Texas. Nvidia’s ecosystem partners will spend $500 million on the AI infrastructure. The Santa Clara, California-based company, which has been leading the development of AI chips and the ecosystem around them, declined to say if it will own and operate the factories. It also isn’t saying how many jobs it will create in the regions. The move isn’t a surprise given the political climate set by the Trump administration. And Nvidia’s key supplier, Taiwan’s TSMC, has been preparing to manufacture chips in the U.S. for years now and recently committed to spending as much as $100 billion on such factories in the future. But with this move, Nvidia will be taking a more active role in supercomputer production than it has it the past. It’s significant as Nvidia is one of the most valuable companies in the world with a market value of $2.737 trillion. Nvidia Blackwell chips have started production at TSMC’s chip plants in Phoenix, Arizona. Nvidia is building supercomputer manufacturing plants in Texas, with Foxconn in Houston and with Wistron in Dallas. Mass production at both plants is expected to ramp up in the next 12 to 15 months. The AI chip and supercomputer supply chain is complex and demands the most advanced manufacturing, packaging, assembly and test technologies. Nvidia is partnering with Amkor and SPIL for packaging and testing operations in Arizona. Within the next four years, Nvidia plans to produce up to half a trillion dollars of AI infrastructure in the United States through partnerships with TSMC, Foxconn, Wistron, Amkor and SPIL. These world-leading companies are deepening their partnership with Nvidia, growing their businesses while expanding their global footprint and hardening supply chain resilience. Nvidia AI supercomputers are the engines of a new type of data center created for the sole purpose of processing artificial intelligence — AI factories that are the infrastructure powering a new AI industry. Tens of “gigawatt AI factories” are expected to be built in the coming years. Manufacturing Nvidia AI chips and supercomputers for American AI factories is expected to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and drive trillions of dollars in economic security over the coming decades. “The engines of the world’s AI infrastructure are being built in the United States for the first time,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, in a statement. “Adding American manufacturing helps us better meet the incredible and growing demand for AI chips and supercomputers, strengthens our supply chain and boosts our resiliency.” The company will utilize its advanced AI, robotics and digital twin technologies to design and operate the facilities, including Nvidia Omniverse to create digital twins of factories and Nvidia Isaac GR00T to build robots to automate manufacturing. Sony’s excellent WF-1000XM5 earbuds have hit their lowest price ever
Sony’s XM5 combine great sound with top-notch noise cancellation. Want a premium pair of earbuds without having to pay a premium price? Right now, Sony’s noise-canceling WF-1000XM5 are on sale at Amazon and Target for $179.99 ($120 off), their best price to date. It’s possible Sony could release the WF-1000XM6 sometime later this year, but for now, few wireless earbuds offer as much value as the current-gen XM5. Along with delivering dynamic and detailed sound, they do a fantastic job of drowning out noise. If you use your earbuds to make phone calls, they’re even more impressive, allowing you to easily eliminate background noise and be heard even in loud environments.  With four foam-style ear tips, the wireless earbuds are also comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time, which you can do without worrying about battery life. That’s because the XM5 can last up to eight hours on a single charge with ANC enabled and recharge exceptionally fast using the included charging case. They also feature several Android-only perks and other conveniences, including IPX4-rated water resistance and support for multipoint Bluetooth connectivity, the latter of which lets you connect them to two devices at once. Traditional RAG Frameworks Fall Short: Megagon Labs Introduces ‘Insight-RAG’, a Novel AI Method Enhancing Retrieval-Augmented Generation through Intermediate Insight Extraction
RAG frameworks have gained attention for their ability to enhance LLMs by integrating external knowledge sources, helping address limitations like hallucinations and outdated information. Traditional RAG approaches often rely on surface-level document relevance despite their potential, missing deeply embedded insights within texts or overlooking information spread across multiple sources. These methods are also limited in their applicability, primarily catering to simple question-answering tasks and struggling with more complex applications, such as synthesizing insights from varied qualitative data or analyzing intricate legal or business content. While earlier RAG models improved accuracy in tasks like summarization and open-domain QA, their retrieval mechanisms lacked the depth to extract nuanced information. Newer variations, such as Iter-RetGen and self-RAG, attempt to manage multi-step reasoning but are not well-suited for non-decomposable tasks like those studied here. Parallel efforts in insight extraction have shown that LLMs can effectively mine detailed, context-specific information from unstructured text. Advanced techniques, including transformer-based models like OpenIE6, have refined the ability to identify critical details. LLMs are increasingly applied in keyphrase extraction and document mining domains, demonstrating their value beyond basic retrieval tasks. Researchers at Megagon Labs introduced Insight-RAG, a new framework that enhances traditional Retrieval-Augmented Generation by incorporating an intermediate insight extraction step. Instead of relying on surface-level document retrieval, Insight-RAG first uses an LLM to identify the key informational needs of a query. A domain-specific LLM retrieves relevant content aligned with these insights, generating a final, context-rich response. Evaluated on two scientific paper datasets, Insight-RAG significantly outperformed standard RAG methods, especially in tasks involving hidden or multi-source information and citation recommendation. These results highlight its broader applicability beyond standard question-answering tasks. Insight-RAG comprises three main components designed to address the shortcomings of traditional RAG methods by incorporating a middle stage focused on extracting task-specific insights. First, the Insight Identifier analyzes the input query to determine its core informational needs, acting as a filter to highlight relevant context. Next, the Insight Miner uses a domain-adapted LLM, specifically a continually pre-trained Llama-3.2 3B model, to retrieve detailed content aligned with these insights. Finally, the Response Generator combines the original query with the mined insights, using another LLM to generate a contextually rich and accurate output. To evaluate Insight-RAG, the researchers constructed three benchmarks using abstracts from the AAN and OC datasets, focusing on different challenges in retrieval-augmented generation. For deeply buried insights, they identified subject-relation-object triples where the object appears only once, making it harder to detect. For multi-source insights, they selected triples with multiple objects spread across documents. Lastly, for non-QA tasks like citation recommendation, they assessed whether insights could guide relevant matches. Experiments showed that Insight-RAG consistently outperformed traditional RAG, especially in handling subtle or distributed information, with DeepSeek-R1 and Llama-3.3 models showing strong results across all benchmarks. In conclusion, Insight-RAG is a new framework that improves traditional RAG by adding an intermediate step focused on extracting key insights. This method tackles the limitations of standard RAG, such as missing hidden details, integrating multi-document information, and handling tasks beyond question answering. Insight-RAG first uses large language models to understand a query’s underlying needs and then retrieves content aligned with those insights. Evaluated on scientific datasets (AAN and OC), it consistently outperformed conventional RAG. Future directions include expanding to fields like law and medicine, introducing hierarchical insight extraction, handling multimodal data, incorporating expert input, and exploring cross-domain insight transfer.
