Kennedy Yanko’s Epic Two-Gallery Exhibition of Crushed Metal
Spanning two galleries in New York City, artist Kennedy Yanko presents her largest exhibition to date with 30 crushed metal and “paint skin” sculptures that pack a resonating gravitational punch. In Tribeca, “Epithets” at James Cohan Gallery is a gray-walled gritty exhibition, while “Retro Future” at Salon 94 on the Upper East Side occupies all three floors that crescendos into sunlit rooms and a bonus group exhibition curated by the artist. This double-venue experience offers great surprises for long-time fans and the perfect introduction for a newcomer. Kennedy Yanko: Trembling down, 2024 \\\ Photo: Dan Bradica Kennedy Yanko: Trembling down, 2024 (detail) \\\ Photo: Dan Bradica Kennedy Yanko’s work is a poetic dance between large chunks of old crushed metal that she rescues from scrapyards, combined with “paint skins” – a material she creates by applying thick layers of paint to her floor and peeling them to become malleable “paintings” without a canvas. Kennedy Yanko: Afterglow, 2025 \\\ Photo: Alexis Salas Kennedy Yanko: Afterglow, 2025 (detail) \\\ Photo: Alexs Salas Through Yanko’s vision and muscle, the brutally disfigured metal meets the “paint skins” to find a seductive confusion of material, weight, and age. Physically they hover between mass and air; emotionally they resonate with a kind of beautiful sadness and joyous hope. Kennedy Yanko: Trembling down, 2024 \\\ Photo: Dan Bradica Kennedy Yanko: Cowboy, gangster, politician, 2024 \\\ Photo: Dan Bradica Kennedy Yanko: Cowboy, gangster, politician, 2024 (detail) \\\ Photo: Dan Bradica Yanko is known for her brilliant use of color (see Design Milk’s review of her 2023 exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch that included near-glowing, jewel-like tones), often pulling color inspiration from the tiniest dots of oxidation or old paint specks in the objects she selects. And though you will find exceptional examples of colorful works at both exhibitions today, the surprise for me are the black works. Several monochromatic works in black hang at both locations, acting as a connection point between the spaces. Though not the largest works on view, their haunting gut-punch physicality is at an extreme, as if they are heavy shadows held between implosion and renewal. Kennedy Yanko: Victim nor hero 2025 \\\ Photo: Alexis Salas Kennedy Yanko: Victim nor hero 2025 (detail) \\\ Photo: Alexis Salas Each location contains unique gems. At James Cohan Gallery, the stand-outs are two “white works” which may be the best ethereal balance between gravitational mass and a spiritual weightlessness. Each feels fully worn and eternally new. The 13-foot “Replenishing the provocative force” on the ground floor hangs only a few centimeters over a mirror-polished pedestal, while “Jetstream Dreams” (below) holds a beautiful room on the 2nd floor. Kennedy Yanko: Jetstream Dreams, 2025 \\\ Photo: Elisabeth Bernstein Kennedy Yanko: Jetstream Dreams, 2025 \\\ Photo: Elisabeth Bernstein I strongly recommend visiting both galleries – not just because each presents a unique view of Yanko’s current work, but also because the journey between the spaces adds something really special. It’s about a 20-minute trip by taxi or train (take the 6). Yanko’s work is surreal, unique, and unexpected, but it also opens your eyes to magical “real” moments on the sidewalk like no other exhibition on view now. For example, on my personal trip, I passed two constructions sites, a blue metal dumpster dented to its limit, and sat on the subway across from a woman with a black leather overcoat that matched the folds in the sculpture. This double venue is not an inconvenience, it’s an injection of complexity and life that will differ for every viewer, made possible through the particular qualities and aura of Yanko’s work. Kennedy Yanko “Retro Future” at Salon 94 Gallery, New York My personal advice is to see James Cohan Gallery first for the best crescendoing experience. Then at Salon 94, you will conclude on the 3rd floor where a bonus exhibition, curated by the artist, presents great work by Frank Stella, Leonardo Drew, John Chamberlain, and others, taking you deeper into the mind of what continues to inspire and influence the artist. Exhibition Information: Tribeca: Kennedy Yanko “Epithets” is on view at James Cohan Gallery in Tribeca, 48 Walker Street, New York, from April 5- May 10, 2025. Your Android Device Will Soon Automatically Reboot to Protect Itself
Android is getting a new security feature that makes it harder for someone to break into your device if it has been lost, stolen, or seized. With the latest Google Play services update, Android phones and tablets will automatically restart (and require a passcode to decrypt) if they remain locked for three consecutive days. How Android auto-restart worksAndroid and iOS devices already revert to a Before First Unlock (BFU) state when restarted, requiring a user to enter their passcode or PIN before certain features—such as notifications and biometrics—are enabled. Data is encrypted and inaccessible in a BFU state until the correct passcode is entered to shift the device to an After First Unlock (AFU) state. While it is possible to extract some data from a device in BFU mode, it is far more limited than a device that is in an AFU state. Once this Google Play services update hits your Android device, it will automatically reboot (into BFU mode) if it remains locked for three consecutive days. That means that if your phone isn't in your possession and hasn't been unlocked, anyone trying to access your data (such as law enforcement or thieves) will encounter a higher security state that cannot be decrypted without your passcode. Apple added a similar feature called "inactivity reboot"—which automatically restarts your iPhone and re-encrypts its data if it goes unused for four days—to iOS 18.1 late last year.According to 9to5Google, the Google Play services 25.14 update will be rolled out over the next week. Auto restart may not be enabled immediately, though it should land on your device without an OS update. It's also unclear for now whether this is a feature users can opt in or out of (or if you'll be notified when an automatic restart happens) as well as which versions of Android will be supported.

How to watch Kia's New York International Auto Show presentation on April 16
Kia has teased that it will have a trio of announcements at the 2025 New York International Auto Show. The car company's presentation is scheduled for 10AM ET on April 16. Luckily for those gearheads who want to know what's next for the brand, Kia will have a livestream of its showcase. The reveal will be hosted live on YouTube, and it's also embedded below. The presentation will feature three debuts, according to the company, including two that are fully electric. Kia unveiled its EV4 hatchback sedan in February, but didn't share info about North American manufacturing at that time. That's a likely announcement during this week's New York event. While the stage presentation will get livestreamed, we don't yet have tech to remotely test the Kia EV9 and EV6 models that will be at the live show. Maybe one day…This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/how-to-watch-kias-new-york-international-auto-show-presentation-on-april-16-195259387.html?src=rss

Major U.S. banks pause data sharing with this federal bureau after a cyberattack exposed sensitive information
Several of the largest U.S. banks are reportedly pausing or reassessing how they send sensitive information to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) following a major cyberattack on the regulator. JPMorgan Chase and Bank of New York Mellon have halted electronic information-sharing with the OCC, Bloomberg reported. Bank of America is working to transmit data through what it considers more secure electronic channels, according to the report. The moves come after hackers reportedly accessed more than 100 accounts within the OCC’s email system over the course of a year—a breach the OCC and U.S. Treasury have labeled a “major incident.” The attackers are believed to have obtained highly sensitive information about financial firms, though the identity of the hackers remains unknown. Banks have expressed growing concern over the breach and the OCC’s handling of its disclosure, The Wall Street Journal reported. Many institutions are still unclear about the specific information that may have been compromised. The OCC, an independent bureau within the Treasury Department, regulates and supervises more than 1,000 national banks, federal savings associations, and the U.S. branches of foreign banks. The agency is currently being led on an acting basis by Rodney Hood, a former member of the National Credit Union Administration Board. Among the types of sensitive information banks send to the OCC are reports on cybersecurity practices and National Security Letters, which can include classified details related to terrorism and espionage, according to Bloomberg.

Re-Thinking the Design of the Sleeping Bag, for More Freedom of Sleeping Positions
The most extreme version of a sleeping bag is probably the mummy bag, so named for its sarcophagus-like shape. Designed for cold climates, the tapered form minimizes the interior volume, allowing your body's heat to more easily fill every cubic inch. The mummy bag is fine for those who can sleep in a position like the bag's namesake, all night. More casual campers, and those who toss and turn because they haven't spent the entire day scaling an icy peak, can find even ordinary zip-sided sleeping bags restricting. Thus Rumpl, the Oregon-based camping gear company that pioneered the technical blanket, has adapted their signature product into a wrap-style sleeping bag that offers more freedom of sleeping positions. Called the Wrap Sack, it is slightly tapered at 20° (the mummy bag shown above is tapered at 15°) but is structured more like a trapezoidal tortilla than a book. The center of the wrap is what you lie on, before folding the side wings over you, turning you into a human burrito. You can go wild-style and leave the wings unfastened, or clip them shut at intervals to prevent shifting. A two-way zipper is also incorporated, and rounds the corner at the bottom, so you can free sweaty feet if need be. A hood-like "pillow pocket" up top holds one of the company's Camp Pillows in place. The company says having both wings folded over you will get you through a 20°-30° night, while just one wing can handle a 35°-45° night. It will fit campers up to 6'2" in height.Rumpl is a B Corp that offsets 100% of their carbon footprint each year. The Wrap Bag's 100% post-consumer recycled shell, liner, and insulation is made from 155 plastic bottles. The Wrap Sack runs $200.

Audio Technica Hotaru turntable spins records on levitating platform, glows in palette of colors
Audio Technica is a trusted name when it comes to turntables for audiophiles who don’t compromise on design, functionality or audio quality. The revived Sound Burger turntable and the transparent AT LP2022 turntable to mark their 60th anniversary are prime examples. The Japanese audio equipment expert leaves nothing to chance, while offering high quality audio products that punch way above their weight, at the most affordable prices. Now they want to ride the wave of levitating gadgets, given their aesthetic appeal and musical advantages. At the Milan Design Week in Italy, Audio Technica unveiled Hotaru turntable that levitates in mid-air, and has a visual play of colors to go with your favorite musical tunes. These attributes are true to its name Hotaru which means firefly in Japanese. Designer: Audio Technica The limited-edition record player is designed keeping in mind modern interiors, delivering more than just high-fidelity sound for music lovers to enjoy. It delivers a multisensory experience for not only music affectionates but everyone who appreciates the good things in life. Only limited to 10,000 units, the turntable can be reserved until 30 May, with full payment of $9,999 to be done by August, and shipping starting a bit later on in October. That’s a long time to wait but there’s also the exclusivity and anticipation when it will finally adorn your living room. Floating base and platter of the turntable is made out of precision crafted acrylic to give the color lighting effect capable of producing 20 color shades a vibrant glow. The turntable can be operated with three different color modes – a Basic one where you choose a single color, Graditation wherein the colors smoothly transition randomly, and the Link mode in which the colors sync to the music tonality or beats. The levitating function comes courtesy of the magnetically-suspended platter section that’s repelled by the lower speaker section. This not only looks visually enchanting but also isolates the audio from any sound degrading vibrations that are associated with the connected mechanism. According to the press release, the cartridge functions at its fullest, and the stylus traces the record groove accurately for a crystal-clear audio signal processing. You can also attach the turntable to a hi-fi system to have more thump and clarity in sound. The Hotaru turntable comes with a speaker system having 2.5-inch full rage speakers and dual 0.75-inch tweeters, producing a frequency range of 60Hz to 20kHz. Casing of the speaker unit is made out of high-quality aluminum placed on solid brass supports. Coming on to the platter, it is driven by a DC servo motor that feeds the sub platter courtesy of the concealed belt. The static balanced carbon tonearm is mounted on the sub-platter that has a specially crafted VM cartridge and headshell. Audio Technica says that the whole system has a “rich and refined feel while also rending sound with unparalleled clarity and dynamic expression.” The post Audio Technica Hotaru turntable spins records on levitating platform, glows in palette of colors first appeared on Yanko Design.
