Lunar Remastered Collection: How Its Stellar Logo & Package Design Came to Be
SummaryLunar Remastered Collection is available now on Xbox One (compatible with Xbox Series X|S).An interview with GungHo America’s Senior Graphic Designer about the nostalgic logo, how it played into the new one, and the package design. An in-depth look at the logo history of Lunar Remastered Collection. To celebrate the release of Lunar Remastered Collection, out today for Xbox One (compatible with Xbox Series X|S), I sat down with our Senior Graphic Designer, Amy Nguyen, and talked to her about how this remaster’s logo came to be. I asked her about her inspirations, her design process, and more! Hi Amy! Thank you for taking the time to chat with me. Can you tell us about your artistic background and some notable projects you’ve taken on while at GungHo? Hello! I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, from designing the assets for one of our title’s national tournaments to collaborations with world-renowned IPs. The recent port of Grandia on consoles in 2024 was my first big project as the creative lead. What was your initial reaction when you were asked to design the logo? When I was presented with this project, I was excited and a little bit nervous about working on the Lunar logo, as it plays a key role in representing the game’s brand identity. I began with a few different variations, and once I had a clearer idea of where I wanted to take the logo, it then became a cycle of receiving feedback and applying that feedback until we landed on the final design. Regarding your design process and how this version ended up becoming the official logo, did you consider the original logos when designing the new one? I always start off by conducting some preliminary research. Since we are releasing a remaster, I wanted the main logo design to reflect the brand image of Lunar that longtime players have held dear to their hearts. Using that as my foundation, I brainstormed and sketched out as many ideas as I could think of. I went through several variations of the logo, from slight tweaks to large changes. In the end, we decided to move forward with the above logo as the final design; the iconic red of Lunar with the inner shine, paired with new gold accents as a nod to the remastered qualities of the games. The logo went through quite a few iterations before the final one was decided. Where did you draw inspiration from when designing each version? My primary focus was on maintaining the nostalgic shape language and color of the original “Lunar” text, as well as incorporating the fact that it is a remaster. We made most of the sketch variations to test out various design directions to narrow down what we liked and didn’t like. For example, variations two and three focused on color, mixing the red from Lunar: Silver Star Story with the blue from Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. Variations six through eleven and 17-18 focused on different accents, specifically the dragon sword and the ribbon from Lunar 2: Eternal Blue‘s Sega CD logo, along with visual elements from the games, such as a blue star. Finally, 12-16 tested out different shape languages for the font, from adding dragon accents to exaggerating the arcs and lengths of some letters. Eventually, a mix of one and five became what is now the official logo! Are there any details on the final logo design that you’d like to highlight? I personally love the extended tail in the ‘R’ of “Remastered,” which reflects the original Lunar logo’s ‘R’. For selected letters in “Remastered Collection,” such as the R, E, and N, I exaggerated the serifs a little more to refine the shape language and make it more interesting. Original Lunar artist, Toshiyuki Kubooka, contributed two new key visuals to remaster. What were your impressions and how did they inform your design process for the packaging? I was dazzled by the detail that Mr. Kubooka put into the composition of the overall key visual for each game. It was a refreshing twist to previous Lunar art to see a darker background with a collaged composition. As for the front packaging, the layout was simple to complete, since the original key visual almost perfectly fit within the cover. There were only a few areas with slight placement changes, just to ensure everything was within the safety zone. Flipping over to the back cover, I understand you had a little more freedom with its design. What was your thought process in the assets you chose and the layout? One of the first things I knew I wanted to do was add some of the pixel sprites onto the back cover because pixel graphics have a nostalgic charm and portray a lot of personality in each character despite the limited canvas size. To pair with the sprites, I added some screenshots to show a general overview of what the game content looks like. Design-wise, I made sure to tie in elements of the “Remastered” part of the logo, such as the gold coloring and the font, to keep everything on-brand. For the background, I wanted to make the sections distinct enough to showcase the two different games while maintaining the unified feeling of it being a collection, so I added a gradient transition. With all of the assets and composition in mind, this was the final layout I ended up on. What is your favorite aspect of the package design? The opportunity to work with Mr. Kubooka under his art direction, along with the collaboration that designing the package fostered for each section. I worked on the design and visual aesthetic of the overall package but had a lot of support from GungHo’s Marketing and Production teams, and from original developer Game Arts as well. Overall, this package design is a culmination of everyone’s hard work that came together to make something that I hope you will all enjoy! Lunar: Remastered Collection is available right now on Xbox. Tips and tricks to get the most out of your CarPlay experience
For the vast majority of people, CarPlay is a must-have. Apple’s in-car experience provides a vastly superior infotainment experience than most options from carmakers. There’s quick access to your favorite apps, integration with Siri, seamless connectivity, and more. Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks for making sure you’re getting the most out of your CarPlay experience… Customize your CarPlay apps and Home Screen A lot of your favorite apps are probably available on CarPlay, but that doesn’t mean you want all of them on your CarPlay Home Screen. Thankfully, it’s easy to adjust those options. Open the Settings app on your iPhone Tap “General” Tap “CarPlay” Tap your car’s name and choose “Customize” Here, you’ll see a full list of all the CarPlay apps on your phone. You can simply tap on the red minus sign to hide apps from appearing on CarPlay. You can also rearrange your CarPlay Home Screen while on this page of the Settings app. Simply drag the apps into your desired order using the three lines on the right side of the app icons. CarPlay wallpapers While you can’t use any photo as your CarPlay wallpaper, Apple does offer a selection of pre-installed options. Open the Settings app on CarPlay itself Select “Wallpaper” Choose your desired wallpaper and tap “Set” Apple adds new wallpaper options to CarPlay from time to time, but there’s still only a limited number of choices available. Wireless or wired? CarPlay works both wired and wirelessly, depending on your car’s make and model. Wired CarPlay generally provides a faster and more reliable experience. While using wireless CarPlay, you might experience some latency when doing things like changing songs and accessing Siri. Here’s my strategy: I use wireless CarPlay for quick trips around town when I’m getting in and out of the car multiple times of the car as I run errands. I use wired CarPlay for longer road trips where I’m in the car for extended periods of time. Again, your mileage may vary depending on your car. There are, however, ways to bring wireless CarPlay to any car. My personal recommendation is the CarlinKit 5.0 adapter, which converts your car’s wired CarPlay implementation to a wireless experience for under $60. Dark mode CarPlay is available in light mode and dark mode interfaces. In the Settings app via CarPlay, you can choose between three options: Light Dark Automatic I use the automatic setting, which switches between light and dark modes based on time of day and other exterior lighting factors. Driving Focus mode One of the most important benefits of CarPlay is that it enhances in-car safety by discouraging you from picking up your phone. First, there’s the Driving Focus mode. This blocks incoming notifications, messages, and calls so your focus remains on the road. You can customize the Driving Focus mode via the Settings app on your iPhone. You can choose to allow notifications from specific contacts and enable an automatic reply feature that tells people who text you that you’re driving. You can also choose to enable Driving Focus when connected to CarPlay automatically. Announce Messages Announce Messages is a popular iPhone feature that works with Siri to read your messages aloud. Then, you can choose to reply to that message using your voice. The feature works with Apple’s Messages app as well as third-party apps like WhatsApp. Go to Settings > Siri & Search > Announce Notifications on your iPhone Turn on Announce Notifications and select supported apps In CarPlay, make sure Announce Messages with Siri is enabled in the CarPlay Settings app If you’re like me, you prefer to have control of the music while you’re driving. However, if want other people in your car to be able to contribute songs to the queue, CarPlay has you covered. You’ll see a SharePlay icon in the upper-right corner on the Apple Music Now Playing screen. By tapping on this icon, you’ll be prompted to generate a QR code that others can scan. Once they scan this QR code, a pop-up will appear, informing you that someone is interested in joining your SharePlay session. Once that person joins, the other people can contribute songs to the queue, see what’s currently playing, and rearrange the queue – even if they don’t have Apple Music. Wrap up Are you a CarPlay user? If so, what are some of your favorite tips and tricks? Let us know down in the comments. The elephant in the room, of course, is Apple’s highly-anticipated next-generation CarPlay platform. Unfortunately, there are very few details available on when that will actually materialize. There's Something Incredibly Sketchy About How They Opened the Hatch on Katy Perry's Rocket
By pretty much any account, Blue Origin's publicity stunt of sending an all-female crew into space was a major flop. The Jeff Bezos-owned New Shepard capsule spent mere minutes in kinda-sorta-maybe space, giving its extremely wealthy passengers a momentary glimpse of weightlessness — though more in the way a rollercoaster ride causes you to shift out of your seat than in the microgravity of actual orbit (unlike a theme park ride, though, a ticket for the jaunt set passengers like pop star Katy Perry back hundreds of thousands of dollars apiece.)Adding to the drama, a peculiar moment captured during the live stream had audiences scratching their heads. As spotted by eagle-eyed netizens, and later confirmed by Snopes, the door to the capsule briefly opened inwards and shut again after it softly landed in the West Texas desert. A female employee can be seen hurrying over to the door in an apparent attempt to tell the occupants to shut it again, around the 1:45:30 mark in the official stream.A nearby Bezos laughs while gazing through one of the windows. Roughly two minutes later, he purposefully walks up to the door to use a tool to open the capsule and greet his fiancée — even though the door could clearly already be opened. A flurry of activity including countless camera shutters can be heard, suggesting this was a moment constructed for maximum publicity.Even more strangely, the tool in Bezos' hand appeared to temporarily make contact with the door, but didn't seem to actually engage with any locking mechanism."Oops, she didn't really close it again!" a laughing Bezos can be heard saying. The moment raised plenty of questions. Why did Bezos have to use a tool to open the door if the hatch could've easily been opened from the inside? Just how much of the launch was a silly, rehearsed publicity stunt designed for everybody to fall in love with their favorite billionaires again?A more forgiving interpretation of the moment could indicate that Blue Origin crew members — and not the capsule's passengers — were simply following protocol, forcing the crew to wait until they got the all-clear.Did the passengers, who spent a mere couple of days in preparation for the stunt, screw up the proceedings by opening the latch too soon?Naturally, the internet, which already came out in full force to mock the entire charade, had a field day."Did anyone catch them prematurely opening the door and clearly being told to close it?" one user on TikTok wrote. "AND then Jeff Bezos opens it with a tool?"Of course, conspiracy theories latched onto the opportunity to argue that the New Shepard launch was entirely faked — despite ample evidence suggesting the rocket did indeed reach the Kármán line, the internationally agreed-upon edge of space. But considering the media circus surrounding the launch, which was haphazardly played up as a groundbreaking moment in the history of women in space exploration, there's a good chance Blue Origin was simply trying to ensure it milked every photo opp available. There's already been plenty of speculation about which one-percenter will dare to ride Bezos' rocket next — though considering how this week's launch played out, maybe publicists will think twice before trying to get their client on board.More on the launch: Zillionaire Girlbosses Astonished by Backlash to Their Frivolous Trip to SpaceShare This Article

6 Best Cordless Vacuums in 2025, Tested and Reviewed by AD
The vacuum cleaner has a dual brushroll that can be used on carpet and hard floors, LED lights on the floor head so she can see in the dark, and a 100-minute run time that allows her to finish vacuuming in one session (while the convenient display also shows me how much battery life is remaining). The AI cleaning mode can detect the floor type and automatically change the suction power accordingly. It’s got an adjustable telescopic wand and accessories like an anti-tangle pet hair tool, crevice tool, and combination tool to pick up debris on non-floor areas as well. The self-empty clean station even keeps Williams from having to touch the dust bin (it automatically opens and closes when she places the vacuum on it and touches the button.Tineco Floor ONE S7 Combo Cordless Wet Dry Vacuum CleanerUpsidesTwo vacuumsLots of accessoriesLED lightsDownsidesWet/dry vac can be heavy to pushSpecsWeight: 2.93 poundsBattery life: 40 / 65 minutesBin capacity: 0.19 gallonsAccessories? YesIf you want the very best bang for your buck with a cordless vacuum cleaner, consider the Tineco Floor One S7 Combo Smart Wet Dry Vacuum. We know the Tineco Pure One S11 is a popular choice, but hear us out: At first glance, the Tineco Floor One S7 Combo appears quite expensive, but consider what you get. The cordless wet/dry vacuum has a 40-minute runtime and a self-cleaning system to remove yucky stuff from the wet rollers. However, Williams can also take the motor out of the wet/dry vac and put it in the regular cordless stick vacuum, which has a 65 minutes runtime, and can be used to vacuum both carpet and hard floors.Accessories include the ZeroTangle brush, mini power brush, 2-in-1 crevice dusting brush, and cleaning tool. All of the brushes can be used on the regular cordless vacuum cleaner to increase functionality too.Photo: Lori KeongLevoit LVAC-300 Stick VacuumUpsidesEasy assemblyStylish designLong-lasting batteryDownsidesThe suction power in eco-mode isn’t too strongSpecsWeight: 6.61 poundsBattery life: 120 minutesBin capacity: 0.75 litersNoise Level: 77.5 dBWhile Williams has tested the LVAC-200 in the past and given it rave reviews for its filtration system and tangle-resistant design, associate commerce director Lori Keong says the newest Levoit product, the LVAC-300 vacuum, takes it up a notch with a longer runtime (up to 60 minutes vs. 50) and a redesigned brush assembly for reduced tangling. Plus, its tech-friendly design is top-notch. “I love that the display screen tells you exactly how much battery life is left, and I was able to vacuum the entirety of my teeny apartment around 300 square feet without even breaking 90% battery life on eco mode,” Keong says. It did lose some cleaning points for the power suction of eco mode, which struggled to pick up a popcorn kernel, but she says turbo mode had it covered. It has a small footprint and intuitive assembly design, as Keong says it arrived in a “box small enough that I questioned how the whole thing fit in there.” From there, the setup was a breeze. She recommends this vacuum for those who want the look and quality of a Dyson cleaner at a lower price point. “I think it’s a great alternative for anyone who’s on a budget and wants a slightly tech-enhanced model that deconstructs for small space living.”Tineco Pure ONE Station 5 Cordless Smart VacuumUpsidesSelf-standing clean station12-stage filtration systemLED headlightGreat battery lifeDownsidesNot as many accessoriesSpecsWeight: 16.5 poundsBattery life: 70 minutesBin capacity: 2.5 litersAccessories? YesThe Tineco Pure ONE Station 5 Smart Cordless Smart Vacuum is a more economical choice than the Tineco Floor One S7 Combo, which is another pick on our list. It’s not a wet-dry vacuum, and doesn’t include as many accessories as the former, but does have plenty of features. The two-in-one crevice dusting brush, and the ability to convert from a cordless stick to a handheld adds functionality for other cleaning scenarios. The Pure ONE Station 5 also has a 70-minute battery, which is very good. The brush roller, which has a LED headlight, works on both hard floors and carpet, and the 175W suction captures dust and debris. (We also considered the Tineco Pure One S11.)The large brush roll resists tangling hair and pet fur, which eliminates the need to stop and pull items off the brush—and also eliminates a clogged pipe. The best part is the fully sealed automatic dust collection process. After docking the stick vac on the cleaning station, it will automatically self-clean, which means you don’t have to manually open and clean the dustbin. The auto clean process includes cleaning not only the dustbin, but also the brush, tube, and the HEPA filter. The 12-stage filtration system is actually the most impressive part. The vacuum itself has a six-stage filtration system (main cycle, mess filter, dura-cycle, coarse sponge, fine sponge and HEPA 13 filter). And then, the clean station has its own six-stage filtration system (main cycle, mess filter, single cyclone, coarse sponge, fine sponge, and HEPA 13 filter).Dyson Gen5detect Absolute VacuumUpsidesFluffy optic clean head for hardwoodsWhole-machine HEPA filtrationNo touch bin emptyingDownsidesWall-mounted storage onlySpecsWeight: 7.72 poundsBattery life: 70 minutesBin capacity: 0.2 gallonsAccessories? YesDyson vacuums are well represented on our list of the best vacuums for hardwood floors, and we really like the Dyson V15 detect—however, the company released a new model, the Dyson Gen5detect Absolute, which is the most powerful of the company’s HEPA cordless vacuums. Williams likes the single-button power control over the trigger mechanism. Also, the 70-minute battery life is not only good, but the longest among Dyson’s cordless vacuums. The vacuum has a fluffy optic cleaner head that not only cleans but also polishes hard floors.

OpenAI’s new reasoning AI models hallucinate more
OpenAI’s recently launched o3 and o4-mini AI models are state-of-the-art in many respects. However, the new models still hallucinate, or make things up — in fact, they hallucinate more than several of OpenAI’s older models. Hallucinations have proven to be one of the biggest and most difficult problems to solve in AI, impacting even today’s best-performing systems. Historically, each new model has improved slightly in the hallucination department, hallucinating less than its predecessor. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for o3 and o4-mini. According to OpenAI’s internal tests, o3 and o4-mini, which are so-called reasoning models, hallucinate more often than the company’s previous reasoning models — o1, o1-mini, and o3-mini — as well as OpenAI’s traditional, “non-reasoning” models, such as GPT-4o. Perhaps more concerning, the ChatGPT maker doesn’t really know why it’s happening. In its technical report for o3 and o4-mini, OpenAI writes that “more research is needed” to understand why hallucinations are getting worse as it scales up reasoning models. O3 and o4-mini perform better in some areas, including tasks related to coding and math. But because they “make more claims overall,” they’re often led to make “more accurate claims as well as more inaccurate/hallucinated claims,” per the report. OpenAI found that o3 hallucinated in response to 33% of questions on PersonQA, the company’s in-house benchmark for measuring the accuracy of a model’s knowledge about people. That’s roughly double the hallucination rate of OpenAI’s previous reasoning models, o1 and o3-mini, which scored 16% and 14.8%, respectively. O4-mini did even worse on PersonQA — hallucinating 48% of the time. Third-party testing by Transluce, a nonprofit AI research lab, also found evidence that o3 has a tendency to make up actions it took in the process of arriving at answers. In one example, Transluce observed o3 claiming that it ran code on a 2021 MacBook Pro “outside of ChatGPT,” then copied the numbers into its answer. While o3 has access to some tools, it can’t do that. “Our hypothesis is that the kind of reinforcement learning used for o-series models may amplify issues that are usually mitigated (but not fully erased) by standard post-training pipelines,” said Neil Chowdhury, a Transluce researcher and former OpenAI employee, in an email to TechCrunch. Sarah Schwettmann, co-founder of Transluce, added that o3’s hallucination rate may make it less useful than it otherwise would be. Kian Katanforoosh, a Stanford adjunct professor and CEO of the upskilling startup Workera, told TechCrunch that his team is already testing o3 in their coding workflows, and that they’ve found it to be a step above the competition. However, Katanforoosh says that o3 tends to hallucinate broken website links. The model will supply a link that, when clicked, doesn’t work. Hallucinations may help models arrive at interesting ideas and be creative in their “thinking,” but they also make some models a tough sell for businesses in markets where accuracy is paramount. For example, a law firm likely wouldn’t be pleased with a model that inserts lots of factual errors into client contracts. One promising approach to boosting the accuracy of models is giving them web search capabilities. OpenAI’s GPT-4o with web search achieves 90% accuracy on SimpleQA, another one of OpenAI’s accuracy benchmarks. Potentially, search could improve reasoning models’ hallucination rates, as well — at least in cases where users are willing to expose prompts to a third-party search provider. If scaling up reasoning models indeed continues to worsen hallucinations, it’ll make the hunt for a solution all the more urgent. “Addressing hallucinations across all our models is an ongoing area of research, and we’re continually working to improve their accuracy and reliability,” said OpenAI spokesperson Niko Felix in an email to TechCrunch. In the last year, the broader AI industry has pivoted to focus on reasoning models after techniques to improve traditional AI models started showing diminishing returns. Reasoning improves model performance on a variety of tasks without requiring massive amounts of computing and data during training. Yet it seems reasoning also may lead to more hallucinating — presenting a challenge.

  • Resourceful modder turns an old HDD into a dirt cheap disc sander
DIY HDD: As any computer enthusiast will attest, being in the computer business for a few years usually means accumulating a pile of spare parts and hardware components. Old hard drives can be repurposed as additional storage in newer systems, or even transformed into creative modding projects with a few extra pieces and a bit of soldering, and then there's this. One such modder, who enjoys tinkering with electronics and PC hardware, turned a retired hard disk drive into a custom disc sander. Recently featured by Tom's Hardware, the project makes clever use of the 7200 RPM speed of an old WD HDD, along with a few additional components and some basic tools. The creator, known as "ProShorts 101," used a WD Caviar Blue WD1600AAJS drive, dating back to 2009 and offering what was then a lavish 160GB of storage. To complete the build, he incorporated a 30A electronic speed controller, a servo tester, a 12V socket, and sandpaper, which he glued to the HDD's spinning disc. The modder disassembled the hard drive, removed the PCB and other components typically found in a functioning drive, and installed the new parts. He even reused some of the original metal casing to shield the internal parts, leaving only the rotating disc exposed. Finally, sandpaper was glued onto the metallic disc surface, completing the "portable" disc sander. As someone suggested in the video comments, ProShorts could have improved the design by using Velcro instead of glue. This would allow for easy replacement of worn sandpaper in the future. Others praised the ingenuity of repurposing a (presumably) non-functional hard drive into something useful. Disc sanders come in various sizes, shapes, and price ranges, and purchasing a high-quality one often requires a significant investment. While an HDD-based sander won't grind heavy-duty metals or help you build a house, it could be "good enough" for some personal, smaller scale projects. // Related Stories ProShorts 101's DIY creations include a variety of testers and electronic gadgets. He clearly has a passion for transforming everyday objects into new, functional "toys" though we found that the overuse of words like "amazing," "incredible," and "useful" makes browsing his YouTube channel a tad bit bothersome.

Luxury watch brand Movado has a smart watch — it’s over $350 below retail price today
Smart watches are fascinating ways to track our sleep, health, and fitness and make an interesting use of the wrist slot on our body in a world where the time is more available than ever. But we can criticize even the best smartwatches for looking a bit too techy. That is, if you want something that looks more traditional and fear looking too health-conscious, a smartwatch is seemingly not for you. Fortunately, we’re seeing an increasing interest in hybrid smartwatches — watches that use old world style with modern day tech. And, sometimes, they get a pretty good sale. Take the Movado Bold Motion in stainless steel that we’re now seeing on Jomashop. It retails for $795, but they’re selling it for just $442. That’s a discount of $353, or around 44% off. Tap the button below to see and buy the watch or keep reading to learn about all of its details. The majority of this Movado Bold Motion is stainless steel. It has a stainless steel band and casing. The face itself is protected by a scratch-resistant mineral crystal surface and the interior is a dark black with blue-accented hands and a blue ring around the dial. It has a noticeable crown on the side, as most traditional watches do, but the whole thing stays relatively minimalist. Even the charging portal is hidden on the underside of the case, hidden away by your wrist. Related All tracking with the Movado Bold Motion is done in conjunction with your phone and, as it goes both ways, your phone gives notifications to the Movado Bold. In other words, this is a very minimalist and unobtrusive smartwatch. It is a watch first and foremost with activity tracking there in the background. With this watch it should be easier to ignore the gamification to some degree and just act, free of the constant “observer effect” you may feel when wearing a smartwatch with notifications, trackers, and stats ever-present upon your wrist. Here’s a reminder that the Movado Bold Motion is said to retail at $795 and you can get yours for just $442 today if you tap the button below. Again, that’s a discount of $353 or 44% off. Of course, this isn’t the only smartwatch that has a deal today, so be sure to look at our collection of smartwatch deals for models that have a more typical design. Editors’ Recommendations
