Have an account? A massive blast occurred at a Russian ammunition depot on Tuesday. The Kremlin said the incident was caused by a fire from the mishandling of explosives. Ukraine has attacked similar sites in the past, but this is said to be an accident. A massive blast rocked a Russian ammunition depot Tuesday. The Kremlin blamed it onVideo footage and images began to surface on social media on Tuesday, showing smoke plumes and fireballs at what was identified as Russia's 51st Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) Arsenal, a facility located northeast of Moscow in the Vladimir Region, more than 300 miles from the Ukrainian border. There were reports later of secondary explosions. Ukraine's strategic communications center said that the facility is one of the Russian defense ministry's largest munitions arsenals.Russia's 51st GRAU is in the Kirzhach district of the Vladimir region. Russian state media said that authorities declared a state of emergency in this district.Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, wrote in a message on the Telegram messaging app that the arsenal stores around 100,000 tons of weaponry. He said this includes artillery shells and missiles. Business Insider could not immediately verify the reported details of the incident. The cause of the blast was initially unclear. Russia's defense ministry later provided an explanation. Though it did not identify the exact site of the explosion, it said that a fire at a military site in the Vladimir region caused ammunition to detonate inside a warehouse. The Kremlin said the incident will be investigated."According to preliminary information, there are no casualties," the ministry said in a statement posted to Telegram. "The cause of the fire is a violation of safety requirements when working with explosive materials.""Based on the results of the investigation, the guilty officials will be held accountable," the statement added.Russian state media outlet Tass later reported that four people were injured in the explosion, citing the governor of the region. There were no fatalities, it added. Multiple settlements in the area were evacuated. The Ukrainian military has not commented publicly on the explosive incident at the Russian facility. It frequently carries out long-range missile and drone attacks against Russia's energy and military facilities, including ammunition depots.Russia has a history of accidents like the one on Tuesday. Ammunition depots have exploded a few times. In fact, at this site, specifically in the Vladimir region, four people were killed in June 2022 when the ammunition inside detonated during unloading operations. GIZMODO.COMAs Elon Tries to Avoid the Spotlight, Climate Activists Brazenly Vandalize Tesla DealershipBy AJ Dellinger Published April 22, 2025 | Comments (0) | A protester from Extinction Rebellion spraypaints "DOGE" with "no" symbol through it on a Tesla showroom window © Oliya Scootercaster/FreedomNews.TV via X The one thing Elon Musk really can’t have right now as he serves as the absentee CEO of Tesla is more negative attention—not only can his ego not handle it, as a recent report from the Washington Post suggested, but his car company’s reputation really cannot suffer any more hits. So it’s hard to imagine he’s thrilled about Extinction Rebellion, the occasionally controversial environmental movement, spray painting the windows of Tesla dealerships with anti-Musk messaging at a time when his tarnished image is already seemingly costing the company money. FreedomNews.TV documented protesters with the non-violent protest group hitting up a Tesla showroom in Manhattan on Tuesday, using spray paint to leave messages in opposition to Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. Demonstrators sprayed “Fuck DOGE” and “We do not consent” among other generally anti-Musk positions on the building as part of an Earth Day demonstration. It’s a pretty daring campaign given the Trump administration’s stated goal to crack down on those who vandalize Tesla dealerships and threats to hit the worst offenders with terrorism charges. BREAKING: Climate Activists TAG windows of Tesla Showroom in Manhattan on #EarthDay Extinction Rebellion tagged "F Off DOGE" and "WE DO NOT CONSENT" among other writings on the windows. pic.twitter.com/XMHBYnBxwY — Oliya Scootercaster 🛴 (@ScooterCasterNY) April 22, 2025 It also happens to come on the same day that Tesla is expected to report its first quarter earnings for 2025, in what some investors see as a potential make-or-break moment for the company. Tesla’s stock price has taken a hit over the course of this year as Musk’s role in government has drawn the ire of protesters and hurt the electric vehicle company’s brand. Certainly, the litany of demonstrations outside of Tesla dealerships has not been great for overall morale or the bottom line. Dealerships and showrooms have been the target of organized protests and seemingly less organized attacks that have included shooting out windows and setting vehicles on fire. Tesla drivers, embarrassed by the car’s association with Musk and in some cases afraid of getting heckled, have either ditched their cars or tried to cover their shame by covering up the branding. Theoretically, and certainly in Musk’s version of reality, environmental activists would support Tesla, seeing as it’s arguably the most noteworthy electric vehicle. But the thing is, when you throw your full weight behind an administration that straight up does not believe climate change is a real thing, intends to drill for more oil and burn more coal, and generally just revel in doing things that harm the planet, you kinda lose your credibility with that crowd. Instead, the world’s richest man is learning that you can buy a seat next to the President in the White House, but you can’t buy goodwill with the general public. It seems like it’ll be hard for Musk to put the toothpaste back in the tube on this issue. Even if he steps away from DOGE, which he might just have to do anyway due to the law, getting his reputation back among those most inclined to buy a Tesla is going to be a bit harder than just scrubbing off the anti-DOGE graffiti from a showroom window. That’s the kind of mark that stays with you. GIZMODO.COMHeather Graham to Star in What Sure Sounds Like a Remake of 1982’s The EntityDeadline reports Heather Graham is attached to star in Entity Within, a new movie based on the infamous Doris Bither haunting of 1974 at Alliance Media Partners (the same the studio that brought you the 2023 Graham horror vehicle, Suitable Flesh). Intended to be sold off at the Cannes Market, this new take on the subject co-stars Mimi Rogers (Ginger Snaps, The Rapture, The X-Files, Full Body Massage, etc.), Morgan Peter Brown (Absentia), and Kevin Keppy (Smile), and hails from director Nick Simon (The Girl in The Photographs) and Saw IV writer Thomas Fenton. In the words of AMP’s Anthony Bruckner, “We’re thrilled to be working with Heather Graham again and partnering with Nick Simon to bring Entity Within to Cannes. This is a high-concept, emotionally resonant horror film that we’re excited to share with international buyers.” For those unfamiliar with the story, Bither claimed she was, on more than one occasion, sexually assaulted by an invisible and vocally misogynistic spirit, attracting the attention of parapsychologists as well as Audrey Rose author Frank De Felitta. Felitta recounted the case in his 1978 novel, The Entity, which was later adapted for the screen by Sidney J. Furie in a 1982 film of the same name starring Barbara Hershey. If you haven’t seen it, it’s amazing (Martin Scorsese even hailed it among the scariest films of all time, which is quite the coup for Furie, whose other credits include Superman IV: Quest for Peace). Boasting an Oscar-worthy lead performance from Hershey and a highly memorable percussion-heavy soundtrack by Charles Bernstein (Quentin Tarantino even lifted it for a scene in Inglorious Basterds), The Entity is likely the most disturbing movie about a ghostly haunting ever made—certainly the most disturbing to be released by a major studio. It’s likely for this reason 20th Century Fox decided not to release its planned tie-in video game for the Atari 2600 in which players were to use a pair of paddles to push its ghostly rapist skyward to a higher plane of existence. In part to its grim subject matter, the movie also does that great thing The X-Files often did where it suggests a logical, non-paranormal solution for its events if you so choose to accept them (SVU fans can probably guess what that is). As is often the case with these things, the out makes the idea this poor woman actually is being terrorized by a higher-dimensional monster even more frightening. Go figure. It’s worth noting, however, that even though this new project is based on the same source material, Deadline’s article fails to mention the existence of the 1982 film at all, so we can safely assume this project isn’t officially based on Furie’s novel. As producer Missy Valdez states in the article, “This film is based on a true story and that truth is chilling. It is an honor and a challenge to bring Doris’s raw and terrifying experiences to the screen with care and dignity … this is an elevated horror film that blends emotional depth with real-life terror, and we believe it will deeply resonate with both genre fans and new audiences alike.” Still, the story “so shocking, so threatening, it will frighten you beyond all imagination” (per one of The Entity‘s original taglines) is certainly ripe for a new examination. Godspeed, Heather Graham. Want more io9 news? WWW.POPSCI.COMThis sticker reads emotions (even the ones you try to hide)The wearable uses sensors to identify emotions in real-time. Image: Yangbo Yuan / Penn State Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Good luck hiding how you feel. Researchers from Penn State University believe they have developed a stretchy, Band-Aid-sized wearable device capable of decoding even the most advanced poker face. The device attaches to a subject’s skin and uses sensors to independently detect physiological responses, such as skin temperature and perspiration, in real time. That data is then digitized and analyzed by an AI model designed to determine the type of emotional responses the wearer is experiencing. In testing, the device was able to accurately identify the correct emotional response 89 percent of the time—significantly more accurate, the researchers say, than simply observing a person’s facial expression. That insight, they write, could prove useful for doctors seeking to better understand the psychological state of patients who don’t obviously express emotions outwardly, or those who may be trying to conceal their feelings. The findings were published late last month in the journal Nano Letters. “This technology has the potential to help people who are struggling with their mental health, but maybe aren’t being fully honest with others or even themselves about how much they are struggling,” Penn State doctoral student and paper coauthor Yangbo Yuan said in a statement. Sweat, heart rate, and skin temperature provide emotional clues The researchers set out to create a “multimodal sensing” device capable of collecting several physiological signals simultaneously without interference, a concept they refer to as “crosstalk.” To do that, the team designed the small, sticker-like device made from thin layers of flexible metals like platinum and aluminum, folded and cut into wave-like shapes. Its flexible structure allows it to continue collecting real-time data even when bent, stretched, or pulled. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery powers the device. The device attached to one of the researcher’s cheeks. Image: Yangbo Yuan / Penn State Once applied, the sensors monitor changes in skin temperature, heart rate, humidity (as expressed through sweat), and blood oxygen saturation. Each of these physiological signals can correlate with emotional responses. Increased skin temperature, for example, often signals surprise or anger, while a drop in temperature can indicate happiness, fear, or sadness. Elevated perspiration and heart rate, meanwhile, are common signs of fear. While each signal on its own offers limited insight, the researchers say combining multiple measurements in real time provides a far more accurate picture of an individual’s emotional state. “More accurate emotion recognition can be possible with multidimensional data that integrate the physiological signals with facial expressions,” the researchers write. No facial expression, no problem That stream of physiological data is digitized and transmitted to a mobile device or the cloud. A custom-built machine learning model then analyzes the data to predict the type of emotion the subject is experiencing. All of this happens in near real-time, allowing a physician to monitor and interpret emotional responses while observing a patient in a clinical setting. Researchers put the device to the test in an experiment involving eight volunteers. Participants watched a series of videos designed to elicit specific emotional responses, all while wearing the device. In the first trial, subjects were instructed to display facial expressions linked to emotions such as happiness, fear, sadness, anger, and disgust. The device successfully matched the expressed emotions with 92.28 percent accuracy. Even more impressively though, it identified emotional responses with 88.83 percent accuracy when participants watched the videos without intentionally making any facial expressions. Credit: Yangbo Yuan, Hongcheng Xu, Libo Gao, and Huanyu Cheng, Nano Letters 2025 “Relying only on facial expressions to understand emotions can be misleading,” Penn State Professor and lead author Huanyu “Larry” Cheng said. “People often don’t visibly show how they truly feel, so that’s why we’re combining facial expression analysis with other important physiological signals, which will ultimately lead to better mental health monitoring and support.” Though the sticker is still in the testing phases, researchers believe it could one day be a particularly useful tool to help clinicians better understand the emotional state of non-verbal patients. Early indications of brewing mental health issues, which might otherwise go unnoticed, could give medical professionals and psychiatrists more time to intervene before those situations intensify.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 29 Views
