This Breezy Coastal Kitchen is Basically a Nancy Meyers Movie IRL
If you love the fisherman aesthetic but have wondered how to actually do it well, then look no further than this Nags Head, North Carolina kitchen. Designers Arianna Pannoni and Kasey Bedford of Winsome Interior Design infused the entire coastal new build home, which belongs to Kasey’s family, with cottagecore charm and trendy-yet-timeless hits of salty, sun-washed style, with a few English-inspired accents thrown in for good measure. The team only had one goal in mind when Kasey’s parents brought them on to shepherd the project: to make the home as well-loved and lived-in as the one the family had previously inhabited for 20 years.See below for the 9 ways they achieved that look in the kitchen and breakfast nook: FOR MORE ON COASTAL STYLE: Stacy Zarin GoldbegAn eclectic mix of color and pattern add timeworn charm to this newly built beach house kitchen.Embrace a Coastal Color PaletteTo accomplish that casual, lived-in ease in the kitchen, Kasey and Arianna started with a color palette that looks equal parts sun-drenched and sea-sprayed. Floors painted ocean blue, which were pre-aged to give them extra patina, are grounding while airy white walls unify the antiques-filled open-concept space. Severance-inspired keyboard could cost up to $699 – have your say [Video]
Apple might not really be able to sell you a Lumon terminal, but we noted earlier this month that you will be able to buy a Severance-inspired keyboard. The good news is that you now have a chance to have your say on the specs for the device (as well as see video demos) – the bad news is that it will cost up to $699 … Apple played into the popularity of its Apple TV+ show with a tongue-in-cheek listing of a Lumon Terminal Pro on its website, but when Atomic Keyboard announced a Severance-inspired MDR Dasher Keyboard, it was no joke. The keyboard has become a symbol of the show’s distinctive aesthetic and themes […] Mechanical keyboard enthusiasts appreciate the vintage-inspired design, unique keycap profiles, and the tactile, satisfying typing experience suggested by the show. The keyboard embodies both retro computing nostalgia and the show’s unique dystopian aesthetic. “Please try to enjoy each keystroke equally.” Part of the theme was no Escape key, which is fun as a nod to the show, but perhaps not such a great move in real life – and that’s one of the things the company is now re-thinking. It’s seeking your input on this and other decisions it needs to make before moving into production. The survey takes a couple of minutes to complete. Atomic offers three layout options: The Severance Layout: This stays true to the retro aesthetic while giving you flexibility. You can remap the layout anytime (using QMK), and we’ll include Escape and Control keycaps. This way, you can still access essential keys like Esc and Control. This layout keeps the mysterious, “missing ESC” aesthetic intact — ideal for die-hard fans.Standard Layout: A full 60% layout that includes the missing fifth row, Escape key, Control key, and all the essentials you’re used to. Ideal for those who want a seamless typing experience right out of the box.Adding ESC is practical, but changes the look slightly from the show prop. Still, we get that muscle memory matters.Standard Layout (with HHKB style bottom row): A Standard Layout with HHKB style bottom row. The pricing, however, does seem to be taking the joke a little too far. Macworld notes that the form reveals pricing of $399 to $699 – with a warning that tariffs might push things even higher! But if that hasn’t put you off, you can check out a couple of videos below. Or you could look at mechanical keyboard options with less eye-watering prices … Highlighted accessories Screengrab: Atomic Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed.  FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. Why top SOC teams are shifting to Network Detection and Response
May 01, 2025The Hacker NewsThreat Detection / Network Security Security Operations Center (SOC) teams are facing a fundamentally new challenge — traditional cybersecurity tools are failing to detect advanced adversaries who have become experts at evading endpoint-based defenses and signature-based detection systems. The reality of these “invisible intruders” is driving a significant need for a multi-layered approach to detecting threats, including Network Detection and Response (NDR) solutions. The invisible intruder problem Imagine your network has been compromised — not today or yesterday, but months ago. Despite your significant investments in security tools running 24/7, an advanced adversary has been quietly moving through your systems, carefully avoiding detection. They've stolen credentials, established backdoors, and exfiltrated sensitive data, all while your dashboards showed nothing but green. This scenario is not hypothetical. The average dwell time for attackers — the period between initial compromise and detection — still hovers around 21 days in many industries, with some breaches remaining undiscovered for years. "We hear this story repeatedly from security teams," says Vince Stoffer, field CTO at Corelight, the fastest growing provider of NDR solutions. "They install an NDR solution and immediately discover basic network visibility issues or suspicious activity that's been undiscovered on their networks for months — sometimes years. Adversaries have been conducting reconnaissance, establishing persistence, making lateral moves, and exfiltrating data, all below the detection capabilities of their existing security stack." The problem lies in how modern attackers operate. Today's sophisticated threat actors don't rely on malware with known signatures or behaviors that trigger endpoint alerts. Instead, they: Use living-off-the-land techniques, leveraging legitimate system tools like PowerShell Move laterally through networks using stolen but valid credentials Communicate through encrypted channels Carefully time their activities to blend with normal business operations Exploit trusted relationships between systems These techniques specifically target blind spots in traditional security approaches focused on known indicators of compromise. Signature-based detection and endpoint monitoring simply weren't designed to catch adversaries who operate primarily within legitimate processes and authenticated sessions. How can NDR address these invisible intruders and help security teams regain control of their systems? What is Network Detection and Response? NDR represents an evolution in network security monitoring that goes beyond traditional intrusion detection systems and complements the broader security stack. At their core, NDR solutions capture and analyze raw network traffic and metadata to detect malicious activities, security anomalies, and protocol violations that other security tools might miss. Unlike legacy network security tools that relied primarily on signatures of known threats, modern NDR incorporates a multi-layered detection strategy: Behavioral analytics to identify unusual patterns in network traffic Machine learning models that establish baselines and flag deviations Protocol analysis that understands the "conversations" happening between systems Threat intelligence integration to identify known malicious indicators Advanced analytical capabilities for retrospective threat hunting The "response" element is equally important. NDR platforms provide detailed forensic data for investigations and often include capabilities for automated or guided response actions to contain threats quickly. Why SOC teams are embracing NDR The shift toward NDR stems from several fundamental changes in the security landscape that have transformed how organizations approach threat detection. 1. Rapidly expanding and diversifying attack surfaces Modern enterprise environments have grown exponentially more complex with cloud adoption, containerization, IoT proliferation, and hybrid work models. This expansion has created critical visibility challenges, particularly for lateral movement across environments (east-west traffic) that traditional perimeter-focused tools can miss. NDR provides comprehensive and normalized visibility across these diverse environments, unifying monitoring of on-premises, cloud, and multi-cloud infrastructure under a single analytical umbrella. 2. Privacy-centric technology evolution The widespread adoption of encryption has fundamentally changed security monitoring. With more than 90% of web traffic now encrypted, traditional inspection approaches have become ineffective. Advanced NDR solutions have evolved to analyze encrypted traffic patterns without decryption, maintaining security visibility while respecting privacy through metadata analysis, JA3/JA3S fingerprinting, and other techniques that don't require breaking encryption. 3. Unmanageable device proliferation The explosion of connected devices — from IoT sensors to operational technology — has created environments where traditional agent-based security is impractical or impossible. NDR's agentless approach provides visibility into devices where endpoint solutions cannot be deployed, addressing the security blind spots that increasingly dominate modern networks as device types multiply faster than security teams can manage them. 4. Complementary detection approach SOC teams have recognized that different security technologies excel at detecting different types of threats. While EDR excels at detecting process-level activities on managed endpoints, NDR monitors network traffic for an objective record of communications that is difficult for attackers to manipulate or erase. While logs can be altered and endpoint telemetry can be disabled, network communications must occur for attackers to accomplish their objectives. This "ground truth" quality makes network data particularly valuable for threat detection and forensic investigations. This complementary approach closes critical visibility gaps that attackers exploit. 5. Cybersecurity workforce crisis The global shortage of security professionals (estimated at over 3.5 million unfilled positions) has pushed organizations to adopt technologies that maximize analyst effectiveness. NDR helps address this talent gap by providing high-fidelity detections with rich context that reduce alert fatigue and accelerate investigation processes. By consolidating related activities and providing comprehensive views of potential attack sequences, NDR reduces the cognitive load on already-stretched security teams, allowing them to handle more incidents with existing staff. 6. Evolving regulatory landscape Organizations face increasingly stringent compliance requirements with shorter reporting timeframes. Regulations like GDPR, CCPA, NIS2, and industry-specific frameworks mandate rapid incident notification (often within 72 hours or less) and require detailed forensic evidence. NDR solutions provide the comprehensive audit trails and forensic data necessary to meet these requirements, enabling organizations to demonstrate due diligence and provide required documentation for regulatory reporting. This data is also critical in helping the security team confidently state that the threat has been fully contained and mitigated and to understand the true scope and scale of what the attackers touched when they were inside the network. The future of NDR As more organizations recognize the limitations of traditional security approaches, NDR adoption continues to accelerate. While NDR innovation is moving quickly to stay ahead of attackers, critical capabilities for any NDR solution must include: Cloud-native solutions that provide visibility across multi-cloud environments Integration with SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation and Response) platforms for streamlined workflows Advanced analytical capabilities for proactive threat hunting Open architectures that facilitate integration with broader security ecosystems For SOC teams dealing with increasingly complex threats, NDR has become not just another security tool but a foundational capability that provides the visibility needed to detect and respond to today's sophisticated attackers. While no single technology can solve all security challenges, NDR addresses critical blind spots that have been exploited repeatedly in major breaches. As attack surfaces continue to expand and adversaries grow more creative in how they infiltrate a secure environment, the ability to see and understand network communications has become essential for organizations serious about security. The network, after all, doesn't lie — and that truth has become invaluable in an era where deception is an attacker's primary strategy. Corelight provides elite defenders of all shapes and sizes with the tools and resources they need to ensure comprehensive network visibility and advanced NDR capabilities, based on the open-source Zeek network monitoring platform. CISOs Take Note: Is Needless Cybersecurity Strangling Your Business?
John Edwards, Technology Journalist & AuthorMay 1, 20254 Min Readnarong yuenyongkanokkul via Alamy Stock PhotoThere can never be too much cybersecurity, right? Wrong, says Jason Keirstead, vice president of security strategy at AI security developer Simbian. "Cybersecurity is not always a place where more is better," he observes in an online interview. "Having redundant tools in your security stack, duplicating functions, can create increased churn and workloads, causing security operations center analysts to deal with superfluous, unnecessary alerts and information." The problem can grow even more serious if a tool is redundant because it's outdated. "In that scenario, the outdated tool might not be keeping pace with the latest tactics and techniques being used by adversaries, causing blind spots," Keirstead warns. Additionally, outdated tools can directly affect employees, hampering organizational productivity. Aaron Shilts, president and CEO of security technology firm NetSPI, agrees. "For IT and security teams, redundant and obsolete security tools or measures increase workflows, hurt efficiency, and extend incident response and patch time," he explains via email. "When there's excessive or ineffective tools in the security stack, teams waste valuable time sifting through redundant and low-value alerts, hampering them from focusing on real threats." Related:Obsolete security tools can also falsely flag safe behaviors or, worse yet, not flag unsafe ones, says Sourya Biswas, technical director, risk management and governance, at security consulting firm NCC Group. "The world of security is ever-changing, and attackers with their dynamic tactics, techniques, and procedures need to be countered with up-to-date information and tooling," he states in an online interview. Additionally, even best-of-breed tools can cause harm when used incorrectly. "Some organizations spend money buying the best security tools the market has to offer, but not on deploying them optimally, such as by fine-tuning alert rules for their specific environments." Other organizations may add tools that perform a duplicate function, resulting in inefficiencies. "In time, when business sees security is not delivering the intended results, the buy-in collapses and the security posture degrades." Prime Offenders Most obsolete or redundant tools reside in the detection space, Keirstead says. A prime example is endpoint security agents. "Some enterprises have up to three or four different security tools deployed on the endpoint, each one consuming resources and reducing employee productivity," he notes. Additionally, excessive security controls, such as overly intrusive multi-factor authentication, can create employee friction, slowing down and challenging collaboration with partners, vendors, and customers, Shilts says. "This often results in employees finding workarounds, such as using their personal emails, which introduces security risks that are difficult to track and manage." Related:Another headache are firewalls or security gateways offering features, such as IPS/IDS capabilities, that overlap with other tools but may not be able to perform the task as well as a purpose-built system, says Erich Kron, security awareness advocate for KnowBe4, a security training firm. Unified threat management (UTM) devices, for example, can be great for small or medium businesses, but tend to be far less scalable than purpose-built equipment. "Larger organizations with complex networks and higher bandwidth throughput, or more stringent security needs, may find themselves in a situation where these all-in-one devices can't keep up with the demand, or fail to perform as needed," he observes in an online interview. Weed Control Conducting occasional audits of network equipment and the capabilities they provide, along with their limitations, can help organizations avoid unpleasant surprises created by overcomplicated configurations, underpowered devices, or outdated gear, Kron says. "Many organizations fail to audit their network devices networks on a regular basis, feeling that the effort required may not be worth the rewards," he observes. "However, when organizations do take this step, they often find devices they weren't aware of, or are vulnerable, on the network." Related:In general, an organizational security posture, including tools and procedures, should be assessed annually or even earlier if a major change is implemented, Biswas says. Ideally, to prevent conflicts of interest, such assessments should be performed by independent, expert third parties. "After all, it’s difficult for an implementor or operator to be a truly impartial assessor of their own work," he explains. "While some organizations may be able to do so via internal audit, for most it makes sense to hire an outsider to play devil’s advocate." "Having good relationships with your vendors can be very helpful when trying to make sense of new or improved capabilities, old or outdated equipment, or potential incompatibilities,” Kron says. "A good sales engineer will have the experience and knowledge to point out potential issues before they get out of hand, and a good vendor will be willing to help organizations manage the world of security devices." Keeping Pace Security tooling is not the problem -- misalignment between tools and business needs is, Shilts says. "A well-implemented security strategy supports the pace of development rather than hindering it," he explains. "By carefully selecting, configuring, and integrating tools, organizations can enhance security without sacrificing speed or efficiency." About the AuthorJohn EdwardsTechnology Journalist & AuthorJohn Edwards is a veteran business technology journalist. This is today's edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what's going on in the world of technology. A long-abandoned US nuclear technology is making a comeback in China China has once again beat everyone else to a clean energy milestone—its new nuclear reactor is reportedly one of the first to use thorium instead of uranium as a fuel and the first of its kind that can be refueled while it’s running. It’s an interesting (if decidedly experimental) development out of a country that’s edging toward becoming the world leader in nuclear energy. China has now surpassed France in terms of generation, though not capacity; it still lags behind the US in both categories. But one recurring theme in media coverage about the reactor struck me, because it’s so familiar: This technology was invented decades ago, and then abandoned. And this one research reactor in China running with an alternative fuel says a lot about this moment for nuclear energy technology: Many groups are looking into the past for technologies, with a new appetite for building them. Submitted by WA Contents The gold-colored, folded facade gives a striking and symbolic presence to a new sports complex France Architecture News - May 01, 2025 - 12:36   html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd" French architecture practice Atelier Aconcept has completed a new sports complex wrapped by a golden-colored, folded façade that gives a striking and symbolic presence in In Mennecy, France.Named Nikola Karabatic Sports Complex, the 2,000-square-metre project was designed for the Communauté de Communes du Val d’Essonne, the project owner. According to Atelier Aconcept, the project emerged as "a striking, golden, levitating volume."The sports facility, which is a hallmark for regional growth, is located at the southern edge of a business sector and honors the French champion's medal-rich career with its glittering reflections. The facility's open and public nature is emphasized by its massive aluminum front. Two offset, interconnecting rectangular volumes make up the straightforward yet useful form. This thoughtful design protects people from direct sunlight while maximizing the facade's impact.During the long summer days, a small overhang of the lintel provides shade from the sun.The welcome area at ground level blends in with the forecourt, making it difficult to tell inside from outside. This atrium, which is completely glazed on three sides, promotes transparency between form and function. Visitors are led to the center of the structure by the abundance of natural light. The mezzanine, which naturally extends from the ground floor, is easily accessible from the double-height hall. The multi-sports hall is housed in the suspended volume, which is wrapped with expanding metal that changes color according to the light. This area has a large landscaped outside and can accommodate a range of covered outdoor activities. The interior is brightened by a glass band to the south and a continuous strip of natural light coming from the north. The building's architectural presence is strengthened when its height is maximized. The golden cladding is a purposeful choice that is both striking and representative of the quest for excellence that is connected to Nikola Karabatic's name. Depending on the setup, the precisely rectangular upper-level sports hall can accommodate 100–150 spectators in tiered seating for a variety of sports formats. Two ancillary rooms on the bottom floor further illustrate the facility's adaptability. With at least one unbroken wall, these square-shaped activity areas can have ballet bars, mirrors, projections, or exhibits. These rooms have a smooth connection to the business park and direct outdoor access. These areas are made more versatile by a shared storage area next to them.Comfort for users is emphasized by large circulation zones. The mezzanine and adjacent walkways are illuminated by a wider, elongated courtyard that extends from a central patio at ground level, which also offers natural light and visual relief.Parking was difficult due to the site's limitations, therefore a creative solution that incorporates stormwater management was developed. The parking lot is a manicured feature that blends in with the surrounding environment.Floor planFloor planFloor planFloor planSectionSectionNorth elevationWest elevationProject factsProject name: Nikola Karabatic Sports ComplexArchitects: Atelier AconceptCompetition: 2021Completion: 2024Surface Area: 2,000 m2Sustainability: Effinergie+ & Eco-DesignClient: Communauté de Communes du Val d'EssonneProject teamStructural Engineering: Gaïa, Ligot Mechanical & Electrical Engineering: LBEi Sustainability & HQE: Cardonnel Acoustics: ArtacoustiqueKey features: HQE Effinergie+ certification, Wood structure, Large cantilevered overhangAll images © 11h45.All drawings © Atelier Aconcept.> via Atelier Aconcept

Next phase of Frank Gehry’s Battersea Power Station resi scheme approved
Bilbao Guggenheim architect’s only UK project set to be extended with cosntruction starting this year CGI of the approved extension to Prospect Place The next phase of Frank Gehry’s only UK project at Battersea Power Station in south London has been approved. Two mixed-use blocks containing a total of 306 homes and ground floor retail space will be added to the architect’s existing two-block Prospect Place scheme, which was completed in 2022 by Sir Robert McAlpine. Prospect Place, designed by Gehry’s practice Gehry Partners, is located at a prominent location close to Battersea Power Station tube station and serves as a gateway scheme to the wider redevelopment around the former power station. Designed for the Battersea Power Station Development Company, it is known for its highly recognisable white sculptural facade typical of Gehry’s work on projects including the  Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The new phase of Prospect Place will have a “more modern aesthetic” to reduce the carbon footprint, according to the development company, and green roofs aiming to achieve a minimum 10% biodiversity net gain. One of the newly approved blocks, Prospect Place 3, is expected to include senior living apartments, to be managed by a specialist operator for over 65s and including access to additional care and on-site facilities. The other block, Prospect Place 4, will contain 122 homes, with both blocks sitting on communal podiums which extend to form a private garden for residents. Frank Gehry said: “These two buildings will help our masterplan, which was designed to create the feeling of a neighbourhood, come to fruition. In keeping the same body language of the original, we have continued the white material of these buildings, referencing the incredible history of the Nash Terraces.  “The winter gardens help break down the scale of the facades while also giving each unit a beautiful, light-filled space. Our goal from the beginning has been to make something that is unique to London and unique to this incredible new district in the city. I hope that we make the city proud.” Construction is expected to start later this year with completion anticipated in 2029.
