PC gaming in the living room: How do you do it?

Maybe it was a dumb decision on my behalf, but I had a friend build a beefy gaming PC last summer with the hopes of using it in my living room for a console-esque experience.
But after a few months of it, I just couldn't find a way to make it "clean." That is, I can't rightly set up a desk in my living room. I've had it next to my entertainment center and connected to a monitor that rests on a TV dinner tray.
I know, I know. Not proud of it myself. But I don't want to tie up the main TV either, and there are games I want to play that the Steam Deck can't run.
What's the secret? How can I get this set up more "adult?" Hate seeing the chords and all over the place, hate having my set up feel this janky.
Any tips or tricks for making this work? I just want to be able to use this machine as a console while I lounge on my couch.

Honestly, Steam Deck. and anything the steam deck can't run I stream from my PC. It helps that both my PC and Steam Deck Dock are wired in, so the streaming experience is pretty great.

i mean i have my desktop in my office where it belongs. if i had wall access i would thread a long-ass hdmi cable through the wall, but i don't, so i just snake one out of my office when I use the PC. Keep it wound up on a hook near the TV with a HDMI extension cable extender connected to the PC for easy access without having to root about on the floor
wireless trackball if i need it near the TV and wireless xbox elite controller

I built a Small form factor PC in the size of PS5 and it's connected to the TV. Have steam launch in big picture mode and have windows passing the login automatically. Entirely controller setup.

On the software side, I use playnite so all my shit is in one spot and it launches to a console like controller interface.
As far as cables, I use a wireless mouse and keyboard. The computer itself is under the TV. So, I don't really care about trying to hide the HDMI, power, and ethernet cable.

I just have a small wireless keyboard and mouse on the coffee table for when I need to turn the PC on, and maybe the occasional game I want to play that is better on those. Thats about it. My PC isn't that much bigger than the PS5 was.

When i had my PC hooked up to my TV, I kept my wireless keyboard and mouse on the coffee table with a little cushion to sit on. But mostly I played with a controller on the couch.

I love Playnite. Thats what I use on my PC now. I've had way too many situations where I couldn't remember which service I owned a game on. Playnite solves that.

Steam Big Picture mode + controller and one of those Logitech touch pad keyboard combos for $20
Boom, the elusive comfy PC couch gaming (illegal in some parts of Era, I didn't tell you this!)

5 meters long HDMI cable attached to the TV from my hobby room, and wireless kb/m and controller.
I used to have this kind of setup, with PC literally sitting besides the cabinet. But since my son was born I moved the PC to the other room.

25ft HDMI cable through the wall from the PC room to the living room with wireless keyboard and 8bitdo 2.4Ghz Ultimate controller.
That way I can play games on my PC in two different rooms very easily.

I ran fiber optic HDMI and USB cables to the living room. USB hub and a wireless mini kb/m with controllers.
Then I just use DisplayFusion profiles to go between "Desktop Mode" and "TV Mode".
(Before that, I used Moonlight)

I use some table cloth to disguise mine and make all my guests eat on it. Said to them I imported a real kotatsu from Japan. They love it, especially in the winter. The tricky part was explaining the leds.

Long HDMI cable, wireless lapboard keyboard, wireless mouse, dedicated controller.
Since you're using a desktop, steaming to a smaller device for comfort as needed could be handy. Personally this is why I'm opting for a powerful laptop as an experiment to see if the raw hardware power loss is worth the greater ease with couch and bed-based gaming (supplemented by GeForce Now)

Wireless split keyboards like glove80 is super nice for couch setup.
Kinda like this but you can put each half on the couch (or arm rests) to the left and right of you seating position so you don't have to put the keyboard on your lap or coffee table. Trackball is also nice since you don't need extra space to move you mouse. I do have my PC right next to my couch though since I also use stuff like Stream Deck and those don't have wireless option so it's more convinient this way and I only need to hide a single HDMI to my TV (my couch is pretty close to the wall so the power cable doesn't really need much management). I also have a side cabinet to put other stuff on.
I also recently setup my controller to be used as mouse and keyboard (mostly hotkeys, shortcuts, auto-fill credentials) with reWASD so now I can do general navigation without even having to use my actual mouse and keyboard. I set it up so that it automatically switches to this mode when a game is not the active window.

On the software side of things, here is a guide that shows you how to setup a PC so it can be controlled totally from a game pad (including waking and sleeping). Should be ideal for anyone who wants to have a true living room gaming PC. Though you said you don't want to hook it up to the TV? So I'm kinda confused. I don't think there's a way to avoid awkwardness of having to put a monitor on a TV table instead lol.

So steam opens up on your PC start up?
What OS do you use?
Husband wants to build a PC for our living room eventually, but he's not as particular about getting a "console-like" experience as I am lol

My tower is next to my entertainment center and plugs right into my big TV. I use wireless Xbox controllers but have a wireless keyboard and mouse if I ever need it, but do most gaming with the controller. If I need to use a mouse to just open up apps or games/navigate menus I have a remote mouse app on my phone.

The Logitech keyboard with a trackpad, and Bluetooth controllers. Have a cable running through the drop-down ceiling and wall from the PC across the room to the entertainment setup. UI stuff is a little messy but it works well

Do you not have multiple HDMI inputs that you can switch between on your TV with a remote? You could put your PC on one of those inputs and just switch it when you're not using it

The main things I use are:
Wireless controller + Controller Companion (for most games/tasks)
Lap desk + Wireless 40% keyboard + Wireless mouse (for games requiring a KB/M setup)
Mini wireless keyboard (for typing something in a pinch)
Full wireless keyboard stored out of the way (for more involved typing)
Of the above, I consider the Controller Companion software to be the most important piece for my living room PC gaming. It's a game changer for me (no pun intended), and the best $3 I ever spent from what I got out of it.

Outside of games that explicitly require a keyboard, this is a non-issue these days. Throw Steam Big Picture on the big screen or use Launchbox Big Box or Playnite's full screen mode for a console UI.
If your gaming PC isn't your only PC, you can easily set it up so that it bypasses the desktop entirely and jumps straight into the controller UI modes for either of the three programs. If you don't mind the cut back game support or have an AMD GPU, throwing on Linux with Bazzite or other Linux OS's that emulate SteamOS is possible too. Unless you're trying to do power user stuff, you're not going to need to touch anything outside of the game stuff.

Hard to link images on mobile, so I'll use a Bluesky post. 99% of the time I'm playing anything, it's local remote play via Steam Link, Moonlight, or Xbox. Moonlight pictured below.

Gaming laptop. I can easily move between a desk setup and a TV setup depending on the game, it's one of the reasons I upgraded to another laptop instead of a desktop.
If I got a gaming PC, I'd use the laptop as a high end streaming client.

Hooked up to the TV, wireless keyboard+trackpad, only play controller games on it
I don't really understand wanting a living room console experience but then not wanting to use the TV

I don't get it. Wouldn't a console 'tie up' the main TV just as much as your PC?
What I do is to set up a good Steam Input controller setup for the desktop and turn off UAC (though I don't know if that's a good idea). Unless all your games are on Steam I found it's just a pain in the ass to try to get some console type interface going.

A surplus Dell SFF workstation with a low-profile AMD GPU and Bazzite Linux sits below my living room TV for occasional comfy couch gaming.

My PC is connected to my OLED TV.
Playing with a controller or using Apollo / Artemis and streaming to my Odin 2 Portal.
Using Windows 11, works pretty well.

Moonlight+Playnite to an Apple TV with an xbox controller. If I am streaming I generally stream to my steam deck though.

Desktop next to TV/Entertainment Center.
Wireless small keyboard like a Logitech Media Keyboard for everyday stuff and getting into games, etc that you'll use a controller on.
For playing games that require a M+K that's when you get a wireless M+K but make sure to use USB extension cords for the receivers.
To go alongside that you'll want a lapboard or some sort of tray.

I almost never play games that require kb/m, so just a wireless keyboard with a trackpad, and a wireless Xbox controller are all I need. I have the steel series arctis pro with the swappable battery for when I need to use headphones. When using speakers, I have a Sonos arc, sub mini, and my surround speakers are the Ikea/Sonos lamps. PC is tucked away behind the TV, so the setup is super clean...only exposed wires would be the sub and surrounds, but they are just power cables as opposed to speaker cables.

Yeah Steam opens up and auto switches to Big Picture mode. It's just turning on couple of options in steam settings. 1. To have steam starts with windows. 2. steams starts in big picture mode.
I'm on Windows 11. The hardest step is figuring out how to remove windows log in/pin prompt. There are guides online that show how that can be done but Windows updates sometimes break those guides.
This is the article I used to remove the login:

I have got a long ass HDMI from the office to the living room, a USB 2.0 hub and a 3.0 repeater for anything that needs it faster, then a wireless lapboard keyboard and mouse in the coffee table storage.
For software, I have controller companion, which makes navigating Windows with a controller easy. Then 2 macro combinations on there. Holding Back and RT triggers Display Fusion to turn off the office monitors and turn on the TV in Windows, and Back and LT cycles through sound devices, so I can output to the AVR or headset. Works pretty smooth now it's all setup.
Because of all that, I don't even really need big picture, which is handy for GamePass games

Is there a particular kind you recommend? My logitech stuff has issues sometimes, I have the keyboard with trackpad, but also a traditional mouse and keyboard I use from time to time.

You put it next to or under the TV and use a controller. Just like any console.
"don't want to tie up the main TV" isn't a PC specific problem. Sounds like you need a dedicated space and display, to game.
