• How to Use Morph Strike in Deathbound
    gamerant.com
The ability to Morph between different characters is basically the core gimmick of Deathbound, a Soulslike set in this post-apocalyptic religious cult setting made by the developers at Trialforge Studios. In Deathbound, players will start out as one Therone Guillaumen, a devout follower of the Church of Death fighting against the Essencemancers who are trying to give humanity their immortality back. Not long after Therone starts his war against the Essencemancers in the Forbidden City, he stumbles into the middle of one of the Essencemancer's most important rituals. From there, Therone is changed, and his Essence or 'soul' is tampered with, allowing him to now pull other specific Essences into his body.

  • Talking Design With the Creative Director Behind the Stunning New Nest Thermostat
    design-milk.com
The launch of the original Nest Learning Thermostat was a big moment in the smart home industry. At the time, Nest was a fledgling startup founded by Apple engineers Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers. Sure, the device had handy smart features that allowed it to learn your preferences and adapt accordingly. But arguably the most important thing about it was the fact that it was a thermostat that actually looked nice.At the time, and frankly still today, thermostats were generally ugly white rectangles with dated designs and cheap-feeling buttons. Nest flipped that concept on its head, building a device that was easy to use and looked modern and sleek.Polished GoldNow, the Google-owned Nest is pushing forward once again and, at least from a design perspective, has launched what could be the most important Nest Learning Thermostat release since the original. The new device has a slimmer polished metal ring reminiscent of the Google Pixel Watch (thats on purpose), a larger borderless display, and comes in three colors: Polished Silver, Polished Gold, and Polished Obsidian. Oh yeah, it also supports Matter, the universal smart home standard that will allow it to work outside of Google Home. Thats right Apple users finally have access to a premium-looking thermostat with high-end features. The new, 4th gen device is available right now for $279, and ships with an external sensor for remote temperature monitoring.Polished SilverTo get a deeper look at the design of the new Nest Learning Thermostat, and how the design team at Nest approaches design in general, I had the opportunity to ask Isabelle Olsson, Design Director for Home, Wearables, and CMF across all Google Hardware at Google, a few questions.Design Milk: Nest has always been a design forward company. What are changes in design a reflection of? Changes in design preferences, how design and functionality are related, or something else?Isabelle Olsson: First of all, we wanted to make sure we carried forth what people loved about the original design, such as the sleek round form, the satisfying rotating stainless steel bangle, and the engaging UI. With the redesign we had the opportunity to make the screen larger for better usability and make further enhancements to the overall experience, interaction, and look & feel, in addition to delivering improved technology and more powerful AI models that can work with a wider range of homes. To continue the legacy of this groundbreaking design of the original Nest Thermostat we saw an opportunity to bring this product forward to the next decade by completely eliminating the appearance of bezels. We created a design that is seamless between the rotating stainless steel bangle and the lens from a curvature perspective. Additionally this effect is enhanced by our development of a mirror-film technology, resulting in the appearance of one cohesive material.Polished ObsidianDM: How did Nest balance design and functionality for the latest thermostat?IO: We always strive to ensure aesthetics and functionality go hand in hand. An example of that is how we changed the form to float off the wall, not only does it make the product appear thinner and more effortless, it also improves the interaction of turning the dial for various hand sizes, you can now rotate it with just one finger while leaving the screen unobstructed.DM: How does the functionality of a device like the Nest limit design choices? How does it enhance them? One of our design philosophies is to turn challenges into opportunities, its an exciting job for us to take difficult requirements into account. Its a fun process working closely with our engineering partners in landing solutions that serve our customers. In an ideal world, the end result appears to be effortless, in reality getting there is countless hours of meticulous focus in ensuring every step of the user journey is considered. In this generation we are excited that we were able to leverage the Soli radar-based sensing technology which functions through the display to detect when you were nearby. The team used the same technology for the new Nest Learning Thermostat, allowing us to completely remove the plastic cutout, further enhancing the seamless appearance.DM: In what ways do you see the design of smart home devices like the Nest thermostat changing over the coming years? We strive to design for the long-term, hopefully more and more of our technology in our lives are designed to adapt to us, versus the other way around. We hope that people will love to keep the latest Nest thermostat in their homes for the next decade. In terms of whats next, we are excited to surprise and delight you :).For more information or to purchase the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), visit store.google.com.

  • The Out-of-Touch Adults' Guide to Kid Culture: Who Will Nab the 'Youth Vote'?
    lifehacker.com
This week we're looking at a how young people are looking at two long-running American traditions that happen every four years: the presidential election and the summer Olympics. How is each candidate doing with the youth? An estimated 55% of people between the ages of 18 and 29 voted for president in 2020, which is higher than in any election since 1972so young people's votes matter. As you know, I am an internationally recognized expert on what young people think and how to influence them politically. (And yes, I am available for high-paying political consulting jobs from PACs or Super-PACs on either side of the political fence.) So I thought Id compare how the presidential candidates outreach to young voters is going so far and determine the winner of the youth vote.Donald TrumpHaving been edged out in a close election in 2020, Donald Trumps success hinges on broadening his support with groups that didnt vote for him last time. He reached out to African Americans last week by appearing at the National Association of Black Journalists, and it went really well. This week, Trump turned to young voters, appearing as a guest on video game streamerAdin Ross's livestream on Kick. Ross, who was banned from streaming site Twitch for hateful conduct and has previously hosted white supremacist Nick Fuentes and alleged human trafficker Andrew Tate, gifted Trump with a Rolex and Tesla Cybertruck wrapped with a photo of Trump nearly being killed by an assassin. As for how the "historic" meeting went, Trump did a TikTok dance with Ross, then, presumably because he heard kids like the rock and/or roll music, Trump turned up the Cybertrucks system and bumped some grandpa rock: California Dreamin by the Mamas & the Papas, God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, and Cant Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley.I asked my astute 17-year-old son about whether the outreach worked on him, and after rolling his eyes, he said, Trumps trying to capture the youth vote with this stream, but he forgot that 12-year-olds cant vote. Kamala HarrisSince we looked at Trump's tunes, Kamala Harriss musical tastes include Cameos Word Up, Kendrick Lamars Humble, and E-40s Yup. She also listens to Charlie Mingus on vinyl (swoon) which locks down the aging hipster vote. Music aside, since Harris took over as presumptive democratic party nominee from that other guy a couple weeks ago, she has enjoyed an outpouring of support, enthusiasm, and memes from the youngsters on social media. If we settled elections with online enthusiasm, Harris would win in a landslide, but then, Ron Paul would have won in 2008. Anyway, Harris hasnt had to do much youth outreach because not being an ancient weirdo is enough to have Harris beating Trump by 20 points with voters between 18 and 34. Her VP choice, populist Minnesota governor Tim Walz, seems to remind young people of the dad they wish they had, and that probably doesnt hurt.Robert F. Kennedy Jr.Since he started his presidential run, RFK Jr. has admitted hed once eaten barbecued dog (maybe it was a goat), dumped the carcass of a dead bear in Central Park, and that worms ate part of his brain. Clearly the top choice for the young. What is a quiet vacation? The newest trend among older Gen Z and younger Millennials in the workforce is quiet vacationing. An offshoot of quiet quitting, a quiet vacation is when a work-from-home employee travels while continuing to do their job, without telling their bosses that theyre filling out the TPS reports from Tahiti instead of Yonkers. I feel like working during your vacation is just working, not taking a vacation, but if a change of scenery helps employees not claw their eyes out, I dont know why anyone would have a problem with it. I dont know why anyone would feel the need to hide it, either. But Im not the boss of anybody. The meme kings and queens of the OlympicsThe Olympics have been in full effect for nearly two weeks, and a few athletes have risen to the top of the internet for their meme-ability. Here are the most-memed Olympians in 2024, presented in no specific order:Steve Nedoroscik, US pommel-horse expert Credit: @nascarcasm - X Yusuf Dikec, Turkey's answer to John Wick Credit: @temnco - X "Gifted" pole-vaulter Anthony Ammirati Credit: Jenn Takahashi - X Cheese-loving gymnast Giorgia Villa Credit: Giorgia Villa - Instagram Simone Biles clapping back at Donald Trump Credit: Simone Biles - X Viral videos of the week: Old white dudes being racistA definite theme emerged in viral videos this week: "old white dudes being racist" is trending hard. Here are three examples of this genre:Donald Trump questions when Harris turned Black Trump says: "She was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she wentshe became a Black person. I think somebody should look into that. But who does he think should look into it? Is he appealing to some governing body that determines people's Blackness to make a determination? Racism in Virginia CityTikToker unclerickyd1 posted a video this week of an awful encounter with a bunch of racists in Virginia City, VA. After being told that there was a "hanging tree" for people like him, UncleRicky is surrounded and harassed by a group of geriatric weirdos, some wearing Trump hats. Unlike Trump, the people captured in this video, especially main instigators Gary Miller and Janis Cusack Miller, are going through some things. They've been denounced by the city they live in. The sheriff's department is opening an investigation into the incident. The organizers of the event they were attending revoked their registration. Their details have been spread far and wide on the internet along with evidence of that they're not to be accepted in polite society. In response they pulled their business's Facebook account over the negative comments, and took down its Yelp page over the one-star reviews. Janis Cusack Miller seems to have tried to delete her Facebook page, but instead posted a photo of the instructions for how to delete your Facebook profile. Grandfather's funeral labeled as a gang meetingThis third video tell a more complex story of an old white dude being racist. Said old white dude insists his Black neighbors are hosting a gang meeting, even though they're hosting a family gathering for a funeral. The twist in the story: Unlike the people in Virginia City and (probably) Donald Trump this old white dude seems to have dementiathe way he shambles, the confused look in his eye, the insistence that a car is blocking his driveway even though it clearly isn't, all suggest "Mr. James" is not right in the head any more. His mortified-looking wife tries to shoo him back inside, but Mr. James's neighbors respond with grace. They are patient and understanding, even though they'd be well within their rights to be screaming at him.

  • NASAs next astronaut launch to the ISS is delayed. Heres why
    www.fastcompany.com
NASA is delaying its next astronaut launch to buy more time at the International Space Station for Boeings troubled new crew capsule. The space agency said Tuesday its bumping SpaceXs four-person flight from this month to next. Its now targeted for Sept. 24 at the earliest. Officials said that will give them more time to analyze thruster and leak problems that hit Boeings Starliner capsule after its June liftoff, its first with a crew on board.Tuesday marked the two-month point at the space station for Starliners test pilots, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who should have been back by mid-June. NASA is weighing all its options for returning the two veteran astronauts, including a ride home in a SpaceX capsule.NASA and Boeing continue to evaluate the spacecrafts readiness, and no decisions have been made regarding Starliners return, NASA said in a statement. Further details were expected at a news conference set for Wednesday.Only two docking ports at the space station can accommodate U.S. astronaut capsules and, right now, both are occupied. So one will need to be vacated before the next SpaceX crew can arrive. Russia has its own parking places for its Soyuz capsules. The latest setback means the four astronauts who flew up with SpaceX in March now also face a longer mission than planned.Over the past several weeks, Boeing has conducted thruster test firings on the ground as well as in space to better understand why five thrusters failed ahead of Starliners June 6 arrival at the space station. All but one came back online. Helium leaks in the capsules propulsion system also cropped up.Citing the testing, the company late last week said: Boeing remains confident in the Starliner spacecraft and its ability to return safely with crew.Boeing and SpaceX topped NASAs list for astronaut taxi service to and from the space station, after the shuttles retired in 2011. NASA signed contracts worth billions with both companies in order to have a backup in case one of them got sidelined by an accident.SpaceX launched its first crew in 2020; the upcoming flight will be its 10th astronaut flight for NASA. Its also sent a few private crews into orbit.Boeing has had to overcome multiple Starliner problems over the years. The company had to launch an empty Starliner twice before committing to a crew, repeating the initial flight test because of bad software and other issues. The delays have cost the company more than $1 billion. The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Science and Educational Media Group.
