• F5: Giulio Barresi on an Underwater Restaurant, a Dyson Vacuum + More
    design-milk.com
Growing up in Geneva, Switzerland with a Norwegian mother and Sicilian father, Giulio Barresi was convinced he would follow a more traditional route, with an emphasis on biology. As he looked into more artistic fields he became intrigued, and decided to study media interaction design at university. Photography was a starting point, but soon his work evolved to blend coding, electronics, and visuals.Even though Barresi was invigorated by experimentation, he wasnt sure his trajectory was the right one. He still has moments of questioning, but it is all a part of his process, and ultimately, his successes. It took some time for me to feel fully confident in my path, Barresi says. After about two years into my professional career I came to the conclusion that I truly enjoy what I do. Of course, there are moments when imposter syndrome creeps in, but I see it as a healthy challenge that keeps me pushing to grow and improve.Giulio BarresiBarresi has had many supporters along the way, each offering their own unique perspectives that still inspire him. A high school English teacher was an African-American woman and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. She taught Barresi the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity, which then sparked his interest in activism. And his filmmaker friend encouraged him to turn his passion into a profession. After a brief stint at a small design studio, Barresi joined technology brand Logitech, helping to shape the global product lineup from personal workspace solutions to gaming equipment. Now the companys head of UX, Controllers, he recently led the development of MX Creative Console, a groundbreaking set of tools for professional creatives. He uses much simpler implements when he sets out to capture some of the concepts that pop up in the most unexpected places. Sticky notes are his go-to, and hell jot things down on almost any surface he can write on. Yet, hes ready to try another medium, one that allows him to use the power of his voice. The one thing I havent explored yet is audio recordings, Barresi adds. I can actually imagine myself walking around with a small recorder, talking through ideas as they come to mind.Today, Giulio Barresi joins us for Friday Five!Photo: Courtesy of Bang & Olufsen1. Beosound A5 by Bang & OlufsenI love this one. We have a long history with the Bang & Olufsen brand in my family, with B&O pieces passed generations down. The object represents brand heritage with references to the famous Beolit 600. It also invites us to rethink our relationship to music. This object is a way to capture something immaterial, sound. I often bring the Beosound A5 with me to a party or a dinner and play my favourite artists, as one would bring flowers or a bottle of wine.Photo: Courtesy of Bjrklund2. Ostehvel or cheese slicerIts a Norwegian invention to cut very thin slices of cheese, usually Norwegian brown goat cheese. I like objects with a unique purpose and I wanted to call this one out as its part of my cultural heritage, beyond being pretty cool and convenient.Photo: Courtesy of Dyson3. Dyson Cordless Vacuum CleanerI really HATE vacuuming. Or maybe I used to hate vacuuming, until I started using the Dyson vacuum cleaners. I like how this engineering/design led company looks at solving user problems. Its very technological, which sometimes leads to commercial failures, and sometimes creates amazing experiences. Im really impressed by their ability to make people like vacuuming with their product.Photo: Ivar Kvaar4. UnderAn underwater culinary experience. I visited Under, the underwater restaurant in the south of Norway this summer. The revamped concept proposes an incredible culinary experience from a very humble and welcoming team, at par with the impressive architectural work of Norwegian architect firm Snhetta. Being able to experience an incredible Michelin star culinary journey five metres underwater watching sea stars gliding on the massive window and fishes swim by, is a pretty unforgettable experience.Photo: Courtesy of Marimekko5. The Unikko Pattern from MarimekkoThis 60-year-old pattern is instinctively recognizable as Marimekko but never feels outdated. The play around shades and pattern sizes generates a variety of ambiances across fashion pieces and home decor. This iconic Finnish design contrasts with the sometimes austere nordic climate, bringing warmth into peoples homes and lives. Every time I wear a Marimekko piece, eyes turn on me, and the floral pattern sparks conversation.Works by Giulio Barresi for Logitech:

  • The PlayStation VR2 Is Over 40% Off Right Now for Black Friday
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. The PlayStation VR2 is one of a million products on sale for Black Friday this year. If you're interested in the best tech on sale today, see our best Black Friday tech deals page for a broader view of all the best discounts you can get right now. Prices are accurate as of the time of writing, but you can expect them to fluctuate and inventory to sell out, so you may not want to hesitate if you see a sale that grabs you.I loved the original PlayStation VR. I picked one up during the peak of the pandemic (my first foray into VR gaming), and I was blown away. Instead of spending my nights inside my apartment's small living room, I was walking through villages in Skyrim, exploring planets in No Man's Sky, and platforming through creative terrains in Astro Bot Rescue Mission.I was such a fan of the original that I argued it was a better VR headset buy in 2021 than an Oculus Questa stance many VR fans vehemently disagreed with. Three years later, however, the OG PS VR's drawbacks are more pronounced than ever: The OLED display is lower resolution than modern headsets (960x1080), and the headset requires a complicated array of devices and cables (including a camera) to set up. (To that point, I haven't set up the headset since my last move.) But more than that, the controllers are simply not VR controllers: While VR headsets have had finger-tracking controllers with joysticks for years, PS VR simply used the same Move controllers that have been available since the PS3.The PS VR2, however, released in February of 2023, addresses these issues: The OLED HDR display is much higher resolution (2000x2040), quadrupling the megapixels per eye compared to the original; there's some passthrough here, so you can actually see your immediate surroundings without having to take the headset off; the tracking is better, despite requiring no outside camera or peripherals; and the controllers are honest-to-goodness VR controllers, complete with finger tracking and joy sticks. And if you get tired of Sony's VR games, you can connect the PS VR2 to your PC as if it were any other VR headset. PlayStation VR2 Headset With 'Horizon Call of The Mountain' $349.00 at Amazon $599.99 Save $250.99 Get Deal Get Deal $349.00 at Amazon $599.99 Save $250.99 Sony's second-gen PlayStation VR still wasn't perfect: Besides having a smaller library than some other VR headsets, the PS VR2 was and is expensive, retailing for $549.99. When you consider that you also need a PS5 in order to run this thing (it's not compatible with any PS4 console), it's a pricey setup. That's why I haven't bought one yet, even if its plug-and-play approach would make getting back into VR easy. But you've read the headline: It's Black Friday season, and the PS VR2 is on sale. Sony announced a series of PlayStation Black Friday deals on Wednesday, running from Nov. 22 through Dec. 2. As part of that announcement, Sony revealed PS VR2 will be discounted as much as 40%. The math is a bit off, since you can actually snag a PS VR2 at 42% off: Right now, you can get the Horizon Call of The Mountain PS VR2 bundle for $349, down from $599.99. The standalone PS VR2 (no game included) is also $349, down from $549.99. All things considered, you're better off getting the Horizon bundle, since the prices are identical. That said, people are likely going to think similarly, so this bundle could sell quicker than the headset-only offer. I've seen the bundle unavailable once, but it's back right now, so act fast if you want one. • Xbox Black Friday deal: Get the Seagate 2TB expansion card for $200
    www.engadget.com
There are a bunch of deals on consoles and video games for Black Friday. But even if you buy physical copies, current-gen consoles require that games be fully installed onto internal storage to minimize loading times. If you have a lot of games, you may want to have extra storage space. As such, Xbox Series X/S owners may wish to consider picking up Seagate's storage expansion card. The 2TB variant is on sale at the moment. It has dropped to a near-record low of $200 for Black Friday. That's 46 percent off the regular price. Seagate's version is one of our picks for the best Xbox Series X/S accessories. The 2TB version should give you ample space at least until you start filling it up with all of the huge Call of Duty games that have started hitting Game Pass. Let's face it, proprietary storage stinks, but the choice for Series X/S owners looking for more space is largely between Seagate's Storage Expansion Card and WD's Black C50. It's possible to store Series X/S games on a regular external drive, but you'll need to move them to internal storage or an expansion card anyway to actually play them. If you don't want to deal with shifting large files around and waiting for transfers to complete, or you don't want to delete and download games more than is necessary, an expansion card is the way to go. Check out all of the latest Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals here. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/deals/xbox-black-friday-deal-get-the-seagate-2tb-expansion-card-for-200-180119041.html?src=rss
