  • Marine Snow Studies Show How the Ocean Eats Carbon
    www.scientificamerican.com
November 29, 20242 min readMarine Snow Studies Show How the Ocean Eats CarbonThe oceans digestive system is dictated by picky microbes and precise dynamics of drifting debrisBy Susan CosierCarbon falls as marine snow through ocean layers. Ippei Naoi/Getty ImagesFrom the sunlit top 200 meters of the sea, plankton carcasses, excrement and molt particles constantly drift toward the depths. As this so-called marine snow sinks, the bits can clump together or break apart, gain speed or sink more slowly, or get eaten up by bacteria. They descend through darker, colder and denser waters, carrying carbon with them and settling on the bottom as biomass. The oceans absorb billions of tons of carbon every year, a process crucial to account for in climate models. But researchers have long been stumped by how much carbon actually reaches the seafloorand stays there. To find out, oceanographers are investigating how carbon is eaten, expelled and otherwise influenced as it drifts through what some scientists think of as the oceans digestive system.Measuring the rate of carbon storage means scrutinizing the composition of what sinks, how particles stick together and thus drop faster or slower, the decelerating effects of mucus-producing phytoplanktonand even, for a new study published in Science, specific microbes dietary preferences. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. We know theyre linked, but its been very difficult to observe the mechanisms that drive that connection.Recent advances in sensor development, imaging and DNA sequencing are now giving researchers a closer look at the particular organisms and processes at work. By isolating and testing bacterial populations in marine snow, the studys co-author Benjamin Van Mooy, a researcher at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and his colleagues found that specific microbe populations prefer to eat phytoplankton that contain specific kinds of fatty acid biomolecules called lipids.Lipids constitute up to 30 percent of the particulate organic matter at the oceans surface, so bacterial dietary preferences in a given region could significantly alter how much carbon-containing biomass reaches the seafloor. If we can start to understand what [microbes] can do, then we can imagine a future where we can start to predict, potentially, the fate of carbon based on the organisms that are present, says Van Mooy, who was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2024 for his work.Scientists are also working to document what falls through particular locations over various time frames. Sediment traps reveal a snapshot of certain areas marine snow, and Durkin and others are deploying sensors with autonomous cameras to observe sinking particles over a longer period. Seeing the complexity of marine snow distribution, says Rutgers University microbial oceanographer Kay Bidle, reveals how we cant necessarily model and understand carbon flux by the very simple constructs and equations and laws that we had before.

  • What Are Crepuscular Rays?
    www.scientificamerican.com
November 29, 20245 min readSunbeams and the Belt of Venus Are Delightful Twilight SightsTwilight rays are but one of several viewing treats for the liminal time between day and nightBy Phil Plait Alper senova/500px/Getty ImagesBeing an astronomer is fun. You get to feel comfortable under the night sky, and after a few years, youre able to make your way across the starry vault with a familiarity similar to walking around your own neighborhood.Thats true during the day, too; I cant tell you how many times Ive oriented myself by noting where the sun is in the sky, which has literally helped me navigate my actual neighborhood.Astronomy is a lovely undertaking by day or by night, but the sky has delights to offer in the between times as well. When the sun is low or has just barely set for the evening and twilight takes hold, there are phenomena well worth keeping a watch out for.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.Among my favorite sky sights at that time are crepuscular rays, or twilight rays. You may know them more colloquially as a type of sunbeam, a line of light sent across the sky, sometimes for quite a long distance. Sunbeams are common enough; you can see beams of light radiating away from the sun when its behind a clouda sight so familiar that when little kids draw the sun, they usually depict it emanating rays of light. But dont let that familiarity breed contempt. Crepuscular rays are actually a lot weirder than you might think.Air is quite transparent, so you cant see the light passing through it. But if there are particles suspended in the airdust or haze, saythen the suns light illuminates them, and they reflect it brightly. If some object such as a cloud or a mountain is in front of the sun, however, then any particle in that line is in shadow and appears darker. To us on the ground, we see a long, straight shadow edge that appears cast on the sky itself. If there are multiple objects, then there are many different shadows cast, creating a series of bright and dark beams that appear to radiate from the sun. This effect is more common at sunset because the suns light creates haze particles suspended in the air that accumulate during the day. Also, as twilight begins and the sky darkens, the contrast between light and shadow is easier to see.The first time I remember seeing crepuscular rays was in elementary school, when I was cleaning blackboard erasers by banging them together outside, watching the sunbeams shine through the slowly expanding clouds of suspended chalk dust. When I lived in Colorado, I saw crepuscular rays quite often, with the beams fanning away from the sun as it set behind the Rocky Mountains. Sometimes, on particularly hazy or dusty days, the rays stretched all the way across the sky, from horizon to horizon. And this brings up a point that I love with all my science heart:Crepuscular rays only look like theyre radiating away from the sun. Theyre actually almost exactly parallel to one another! The reason they appear to diverge is perspective. Its exactly the same effect that makes it look like railroad tracks or the edges of a wide highway appear to converge in the distance, meeting at the horizonat the vanishing point. They only look like they converge in the distance, but of course they dont, really.Crepuscular rays are doing the same thing. Theyre parallel, but near the point in the sky where the sun sets, theyre far away from you, so they appear close together. As they get higher in the sky, theyre closer to you, so they appear farther apart, diverging. If they happen to pass directly overhead, they do in fact look parallel near the zenith, but if they continue on to the opposite, eastern horizon, they appear to converge again.Technically, rays on the opposite side of the sky as the sun are called anticrepuscular rays, and if they meet again at the horizon, we say they converge on the antisolar point, the spot on the horizon directly opposite the suns position. Jargon is fun!Crepuscular rays as seen from the International Space Station in low-Earth orbit.NASA/piemags/Alamy Stock PhotoEven after I explain this parallelism to people, some still dont believe me. But the proof can be seen from space! Photographs of long crepuscular rays taken from the International Space Station at local twilight clearly show that the rays are parallel. Anyone from the ground looking at them, though, would see them diverge away from the sun in the west and converge to the east. It literally helps to get a new perspective on some sights. But rays are not the only twilight phenomenon to keep your eyes open for.If you look east, with your back to the sun as it sets in the west, you can sometimes see a pinkish or reddish band on the horizon. It gets higher in the sky the longer you watch, and the colors deepen. Eventually a long wedge of darkness appears on the eastern horizon, highest in the direction directly opposite the sun and tapering to a thin angle on either side. This is the Belt of Venusand its actually the shadow of Earth on its own atmosphere! Toward your east, the sun sets earlier, so its farther below the horizon. As twilight progresses and the sun gets lower below the horizon, the air above Earths surface to the east darkens, contrasting with air higher up thats still illuminated, creating the dark, shadowy band. The reddish colors above it appear because red is not scattered as well by airborne molecules and that air is only getting the reddest light from the setting sun.Ill note the Belt of Venus can occur at sunrise, too, but it helps to have more particulates in the air to see Earths shadow, and this is more common at sunset. Also, in general, more people are awake at dusk than dawn, so its more common to see Earths shadow after sunset.Note that the Belt of Venus always has to appear opposite the sun, which is ironic; the planet Venus orbits closer to our star than Earth does, so we never see it more than around 45 degrees from the sun. So Venus can never appear in its own belt! The term, though, actually comes from the girdle or band usually associated with the sartorial stylings of the Roman goddess Venus and not the planet itself. One of the joys of being an astronomer is paying attention to the sky because it contains innumerable delights to keep you entertained as you wait for it to darken. Its also a joy to know what youre seeing because that knowledge adds spice to the event. There is always beauty to see, but understanding gives it depth.

  • Fortnite Remix Finale event smashes 14m all-time concert record
    www.eurogamer.net
Fortnite Remix Finale event smashes 14m all-time concert recordLive spectacular pays homage to game's past and reveals its future.Image credit: Epic Games / Eurogamer News by Tom Phillips Editor-in-Chief Published on Nov. 30, 2024 Fortnite has finally done it. Tonight's Remix Finale event has at last beaten the game's long-standing concurrent player record for a live concert, set back in 2020 when 12.3 million players tuned in for the first broadcast of its lockdown-era Travis Scott concert.14.3 million people were in-game tonight for Fortnite's Remix Finale event, according to the game's public player stats, while millions more were watching online via Twitch and YouTube. That's higher than the 9.8 million watching in-game earlier this month when the Fortnite Remix mini-season kicked off with a livestreamed concert in Times Square featuring Snoop Dogg and Ice Spice. It's more than double the 5.6 million players who logged in for October's hour-long Doctor Doom boss battle. And perhaps most impressively, it's also higher than last December's much-hyped The Big Bang event, which was attended by 10 million players at the end of the game's hugely popular OG season. The only event to ever get higher within Fortnite was its Marvel season finale featuring Galactus, again back during the lockdown era of 2020, when 15.3 million people were in-game.Watch tonight's Fortnite Remix: The Finale live event in full.Watch on YouTubeIt's been a while since Fortnite itself has commented on its own player stats. Tonight, Epic Games noted the Remix Finale's huge attendance and it confirmed it was a record for any Fortnite concert event. Excluding concerts - which draw huge engagement but are brief affairs - Epic Games last noted a player milestone at the launch of last year's OG season. Then, an astonishing 44 million players logged in over 24 hours, for Fortnite's biggest day ever. (Could this record be broken next week, when Fortnite OG returns as a permanent mode?)Fortnite's Remix Finale kicked off on top of Snoop Dogg's restyled Agency headquarters, site of the fan-favourite Chapter 2 live event The Device. Here, players saw the first of several nods back to previous Fortnite live events, as pylons rose from the waters surrounding the building - now decked out in loudspeakers - and the 'Device' itself appeared - now a giant microphone for a skyscraper-sized Snoop Dogg to pick up and rap with. Snoop's section of the event continued with the rapper free-styling alongside a cel-shaded version of himself, around the Agency and then also in a space-set section where players skipped along a planet's rings. As Snoop blasted off atop the Battle Bus, Eminem dropped in for sequence initially inspired by his appearance in last year's The Big Bang event. This was followed by a brilliant anime-inspired section where Snoop fought Fortnite's fan-favourite bear robot (or Mecha Team Leader, to give its full name) from the game's memorable 2019 mecha versus monster battle. Eminem versus Fortnite's robot mech... that's then revealed to be another Eminem. | Image credit: Epic Games / Perfect ScoreNext up came Ice Spice, initially via a more intimate sequence that saw players follow the rapper across city rooftops. A second track saw her turn kaiju-sized, before players were sent off to the concert's final section featuring the late singer and self-proclaimed Fortnite fan Juice WRLD, who died in 2019. How Fortnite handled Juice WRLD's involvement here was interesting. Never before has the game highlighted a celebrity who has passed away, but this section felt an engaging and respectful tribute. Players saw a giant version of the singer surrounded by stars and Fortnite's rift butterflies, rapping on the horizon. One section, featuring the newly-released track Empty Out Your Pockets, saw players transform into and move around the sequence as one of said butterflies (with a nod back to the game's 2018 butterfly event, too). And there was more Juice WRLD to come - at the very end of the concert, there was the option to watch the debut of the official music video for the track. It's a stylish animation set within Fortnite's world, featuring many of its characters, and fitted tonight's proceedings perfectly.Juice WRLD - Empty Out Your Pockets official music video, set within the world of Fortnite.Watch on YouTubeAs the music came to a close, fans of Fortnite's storyline were treated to something more - a look towards the game's future, with some key characters again along for the ride. The event's end saw long-time Fortnite hero Jones and Chapter 5's new main character Hope zooming off into a rift, quickly followed by the Battle Bus and what looks to be a shard of the Zero Point. Huh! As players followed, they were taken to... the game's new Japan-inspired battle royale Island, which will launch properly tomorrow morning. Fortnite's first in-game glimpse at its Chapter 6 Island home. | Image credit: Epic Games / Perfect ScoreYesterday's trailer leak - presumably meant to go live after the event tonight - picks up immediately after, showing the Zero Point shard impacting the Island and sparking demons to come through a portal. Oops. But that's tomorrow's problem.Back to tonight, and Epic Games has an encore showing of the Remix Finale event scheduled for 1am UK time (8pm Eastern, 3pm Pacific), should you wish to join in yourself.

The concert experience was a 20-minute show featuring Snoop Dogg, Eminem, late rapper Juice WRLD, and Ice Spice performing their hit tracks. However before the event began, players were dropped right in front of The Doggpound POI where they were allowed to free roam the area as a countdown timer was running out. Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereFortnite just wrapped up one of its best live events Remix Finale which broke the games all-time concurrent player records as over 14 million users attended the live event. The show was a 20-minute encore of musical performances by Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice Spice, and late rapper Juice WRLD.The event ended with a surprise music video of one of Juices final songs, which was created in Fortnites art style. However, now as players approach Chapter 6 dropping tomorrow, Epic has made a major announcement regarding weapons in the upcoming season and its absolutely game-changing.Fortnite announces the return of Hitscan weapons in Chapter 6 Season 1In an X post by Fortnite ANZ, Epic confirmed that all Chapter 6 Season 1 weapons are Hitscan and wont have bullet drop or travel time on the shots fired by any gun whatsoever. The post said, For those wondering: Chapter 6 Season 1 weapons are HITSCAN! WooT!Hitscan weapons are making a comeback in Chapter 6. Image by Epic Games. This means that even though all Chapter 5 weapons were projectile, after the reception of Hitscan weaponry in Chapter 2 Remix, Epic is keeping the weapons system intact and bringing back the OG Fortnite mechanic into Battle Royale.Several users had mixed feelings as they were already used to projectile weaponry, where one wrote, I love Hitscan but I also hate that it is easier for hackers to aimbot from further distances. Another one chimed in, You BETTER bring back bullet drop. You dont want to deal with defaultings wrath. However, those who are acquainted with Hitscan weaponry right from the OG days said, Wait what type is this again? If it is like Chapter 2, all we do is keep winning. Another user commented, Biggest W in the history of the game. While theres obviously a divide in the community who are concerned about the skill level of players favoring Hitscan, for many Fortnite players it comes as a relief so they can focus on other gameplay elements without having to worry about calculating bullet drop in the heat of the battle.
