PRODUCTION - 19 January 2023, Bavaria, Kempten: ILLUSTRATION - A book of poems lies on a screen on ... [+] which the homepage of ChatGPT is called up. Artificial intelligence that writes greeting cards, poems or non-fiction texts - and sounds amazingly human in the process. The chatbot does more than just chat on the Internet. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), it can also write essays, poems, letters and all kinds of other texts on command - and impresses with its abilities. This gives teachers at universities and schools food for thought. (to dpa "AI takes over homework - schools and universities must rethink") Photo: Karl-Josef Hildenbrand/dpa (Photo by Karl-Josef Hildenbrand/picture alliance via Getty Images)dpa/picture alliance via Getty ImagesIts been two years since ChatGTP made its public debut, and in no sector has its impact been more dramatic and detrimental than in education. Increasingly, homework and exam writing are being done by generative AI instead of students, turned in and passed off as authentic work for grades, credit, and degrees. It is a serious problem that devalues the high school diploma and college degree. It is also sending an untold number of supposedly qualified people into careers and positions such as nurses, engineers, and firefighters, where their lack of actual learning could have dramatic and dangerous consequences. But by and large, stopping AI academic fraud has not been a priority for most schools or educational institutions. Unbelievably, a few schools have actively made it easier and less risky to use AI to shortcut academic attainment, by allowing the use of AI but disallowing the reliable technology that can detect it.Turning off those early warning systems is a profound miscalculation because, as new research from the U.K. points out once again, teachers absolutely cannot or do not spot academic work that has been spit out by a chatbot. The paper, by Peter Scarfe and others at the University of Reading in the U.K., examined what would happen when researchers created fake student profiles and submitted the most basic AI-generated work for those fake students without teachers knowing. The research team found that, Overall, AI submissions verged on being undetectable, with 94% not being detected. If we adopt a stricter criterion for detection with a need for the flag to mention AI specifically, 97% of AI submissions were undetected.MORE FROMFORBES VETTEDYou read that right 97% of AI work in university courses was not flagged as possible AI by teachers. But its actually worse than that, as the report also says, Overall, our 6% detection rate likely overestimates our ability to detect real-world use of AI to cheat in exams. This is not the first time weve been warned that humans cannot find AI work on their own. Last year, a study from the University of South Florida concluded that linguists could not tell the difference between text created by AI and text written by humans.A different study last year this one from American universities in Vietnam found that AI detectors were far better at picking out AI text than human teachers were. The team in Vietnam wrote, Although [AI detection system] Turnitin correctly identified 91% of the papers as containing AI-generated content, faculty members formally reported only 54.5% of the papers as potential cases of academic misconduct. In that study, the teachers were told in advance that papers using AI would be submitted in their courses and they only found little more than half of them. That study also used prompt engineering to make the papers more difficult for AI detectors to spot. Still, the machines caught 91%. The humans, 55%. And schools are actually turning these machines off.Again, the humans were told to look for them and still whiffed. When humans are not put on alert and AI detectors are not used, as was the case in the more recent U.K. study, AI work is missed nearly every time.Worse, the U.K. study also found that, on average, the work created by AI was scored better than actual human work. We found that in 83.4% of instances the grades achieved by AI submissions were higher than a random selection of the same number of student submissions, the repot said.In other words, a student using the most basic AI prompt with no editing or revision at all, was 83% likely to outscore a student peer who actually did the work all while having a generous 6% chance of being flagged if the teachers did not use any AI detection software. Keep in mind that, in real classrooms, a flag of suspected AI use doesnt mean much since professors are very reluctant to pursue cases of academic integrity, and even when they do, the schools are often even more reluctant to issue any sanctions.Recently, the BBC covered the case of a university student who was caught using AI on an academic essay, caught by an AI detector by the way. The student admitted to using AI in violation of class and school rules. But, the BBC reported, She was cleared as a panel ruled there wasnt enough evidence against her, despite her having admitted using AI.Right now, if a school or teacher is not getting assistance from AI detection technology, using AI to cheat is very likely to boost your grade while carrying nearly zero chance anything bad will happen. In other words, if your school is not using AI detection systems, youd have to be an idiot to not use AI on your coursework and exams, especially if your classmates are. Spoiler alert they are.Not to be overlooked in the results of the new U.K. study is that the fake students were in online classes and their fake coursework was submitted online where teachers could not possibly know anything about their students, including whether they were even actually human. It highlights the reality that online courses are more vulnerable to cheating, and AI cheating in particular, because teachers do not know their students and cannot observe their work.Naturally, schools could use technology to solve this problem too, either by proctoring assignments and exams, or by using writing environments that track changes and revisions. But just like using AI detectors in the first place, many schools dont want to do those things either because they take work and cost money.Instead, they prefer to run online classes without AI detectors, without test proctoring, and without the ability to verify the work leaving it to teachers to be AI detectives. Its a solution that is not working, does not work, and will not work.As a result, fraud is rampant, in large part because schools arent interested in detection and consequences. Two years in, AI is here. Any willingness to limit its corrosive power has yet to arrive.

  • Cate Blanchett Fears AI Will Be Incredibly Destructive To Entertainment Industry: Deeply Concerned
    deadline.com
With artificial intelligence on the rise, Cate Blanchett fears it poses a threat beyond just Hollywood. The 2x Oscar winner recently admitted shes deeply concerned about the impact AI will have on the entertainment industry, as well as the rest of the world, with the potential to totally replace anyone. Its a very public-facing industry were in, and I think the discussions around AI were not mainstreamed until the writers strike, really brought into the public discourse, she told BBC. So, I think its very real.Related StoriesBlanchett added of AI, I just look at these things and think, I dont really know what its bringing anybody. Sometimes, its just experimentation for its own sake, which is creativity when you look at it one way. But then its also incredibly destructive, which of course, is the other side of creativity.Watch on DeadlineThe Borderlands actress noted that AI can totally replace anyone onscreen, but her concern with the technology goes beyond its impact on Hollywood.Im less concerned with my job prospects than I am concerned with the impact its going to have on the average person, on old-age pensioners, on people who are already working three jobs to try and be [above] the poverty line, explained Blanchett. Thats my concern; Im worried about us as a species, its a much bigger problem.Blanchett said much of the technology is absolutely pointless, comparing the reality to her new horror comedy Rumours, about world leaders getting lost in the woods during the G7 summit and getting terrorized by zombies. You see these Tesla robots, and you think our film looks like a kind of sweet little documentary compared to whats going on in the world, said Blanchett.

  • Feature: "A Puzzle Should Be Structured Like A Good Joke" - The Influences & Craft Behind 'Lorelei And The Laser Eyes'
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: SimogoYou walk into a poorly lit, seemingly empty hotel. In desperate need of someone to speak to, you hesitantly wander just a single room farther from the entrance, down a serene walkway. You are funnelled into a similarly poorly lit library. Youre second-guessing why you are in this hotel, and why it even has a library, yet your eye is strangely caught by a particular book among the busy shelves. You let this curiosity afford you a few steps deeper. You reach up a tip-toes distance to that possibly glowing book, then hesitantly pull on its spine. You find that its heavy. It flops down and you catch it with your other arm. The book, now sprawled open, reveals the following:Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube787kWatch on YouTube Image: SimogoYou are playing Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, the latest game from Swedish developer Simogo.Arriving five long years after their hit Sayonara Wild Hearts, youd be forgiven if you had no idea it came from the same team; its a muted and tense escape room experience much closer to film noir than pop album, yet its brimming with the same obsession with the human mind that Simogo is known for over their almost 25-year history. In an effort to learn more about the many mysteries inside the game and what inspired them, Nintendo Life spoke to Simon Flesser, one half of Simogos founding members and a development lead on this Game Of The Year candidate.Alan Lopez for Nintendo Life: What was your role on Lorelei and the Laser Eyes?Simon Flesser: Im Simon Flesser. I made a lot of different things on the project. I was responsible for the overall vision, but also practical things like designing and building the world and its puzzles, writing stories, making textures, effects, placing cameras and such.I don't think it's inaccurate (but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!) to call Sayonara Wild Hearts Simogo's biggest commercial success to date. And yet, Lorelei is almost Sayonara's complete opposite: genre, aesthetic, colours almost everything. It's much closer in tone to your previous games, like Device 6.Did the team have to push through any external friction or internal nerves to follow up a successful action-arcade-musical with a black-and-white puzzle mystery game? While I dont have the exact numbers here, [Sayonara Wild Hearts] was certainly the biggest project up to then. But considering how small the team and how short the development time was for things like Device 6, I think one has to consider commercial success relatively. But theres always some kind of pressure involved in starting a new project. For us, I think the pressure has more to do if we can find something unexpected, different, and surprising enough to make.Images: SimogoI read your development profile on Lorelei, which led me to watch Last Year At Marienbad (1961), a movie you cited as one of the major influences for the game. It struck me how many key things Lorelei infuses from Marienbad, like the hotel setting, the unreliable narration, uncertain characters, visual perspective tricks, and more.I'm curioushow much was Loreleis unrelenting preoccupation with perspective specifically inspired from Marienbad's writing and cinematography? The perspective part was mostly a continuation of thought from Sayonara Wild Hearts, actually. [Both games] have, at their core, the idea of trying to 'solve' the 3D camera. In some ways, handing over the control of the camera to players is giving up on the idea of solving the camera. So instead of viewing the 3D camera as an issue, we thought about how we instead could make the camera a natural part of the design, and integrate it to create either emotional resonance or gameplay elements. It was from that core idea [that] the idea of perspective as a broader meaning was born.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube787kInteresting. The game definitely explores perspective in all sorts of unique ways, but I didn't even consider that navigating 3D space has been a relatively new endeavour for Simogo since Sayonara.I want to ask you about the puzzlesIm going to be honest with you, Lorelei wasn't easy for me. And that's a huge part of what made it one of the most fulfilling games I've ever beaten. What was the process for coming up with these types of visual puzzles?[Puzzle making] is very iterative, and different, depending on the puzzle. As we wanted a large part of the puzzles to be able to be randomised, we had to think about them in very specific ways, which naturally led a lot of them to be based around numbers. We often talked about concepts such as symmetry, consistency, and series.I thought a lot about how a puzzle should be structured like a good joke, with a good buildup that culminates in a surprising punchline. The type of puzzles in Lorelei and the Laser Eyes are, to me, largely about communication. Its about communicating and obfuscating the right amount of information that allows the solver to start having ideas about what the concept of the puzzle is. So typically, Id test an idea for a puzzle on the team with a sketch, simply asking them to solve them, and then tweak it until it felt like the idea came across. I thought a lot about how a puzzle should be structured like a good joke, with a good buildup that culminates in a surprising punchline.Without ruining too much, there are some important recurring years in the game. I couldn't help but wonder if you wrote the story around which particular years you could make the most puzzles out of? Because the mileage the game gets out of some of the number combinations just blew me away. [laughter]We chose those years for their symbolic value, and for practical puzzle reasons. If I explain the exact practical reason, some puzzles will be given away. But to give an example, no year used in any puzzle has repeating numbers, which was practical for the way we wanted to design puzzles and their randomisation.Image: StudiocanalI do want to discuss Lorelei's narrative themes. Gameplay-wise, it's obviously a box of puzzles, but the puzzles quickly get extended into the characters. Without getting into the story too much, I loved how the game toys with the idea that an observer necessarily changes the context of something. I'd love to hear more about what got you and the team thinking about these themes. These ideas were formed from our thoughts about entertainment and culture today being so eager to please the audience, rather than trying to create something that feels true...But if I speak about my thoughts around these themes too much, Ill project my own meanings onto the players, which I don't want. I'd like the game to be a vessel for ideas and to raise questions so players can form their own thoughts and views. To that point, how much do you like to pay attention to the online discourse around the story? Is it ever hard to stay out of it? A casual search around Reddit and Steam forums, and I see a bunch of back and forth regarding people's interpretations of the story. We look every now and then. There are plenty of interesting interpretations and analyses. Its fun to read!I did find that a puzzle game of this magnitude is surprisingly communal. One of my favourite things to have happened with Lorelei that I didn't expect was excitement for comparing paper notes with other people who've played it. And it was always paper! I can't show pictures of my notebook because of spoilers, but I love how people instinctively resort to pencil and paperWere big fans of pen and paper ourselves, especially for working. My best ideas come when I am writing and sketching notes, usually on a train. For anyone who hasn't played it, a common visual trick the game does is overlay the gameplay on top of strange photographs. It's subtle, but it was very effective at making me feel uneasy. I read that your team actually took those photographs yourselves...?Thats right. We travelled to Kronovalls Slott in the southeast of Sweden. We were given the keys by the manager and could roam around all day and take photos.Images: SimogoThe castle also has a chapel in one of its wings, but just as we were leaving it, we met the owner in the hallway outside who asked us to not use any photos of the chapel. Perhaps this unintentionally and subconsciously inspired the 'secret chapel' in the game.[Laughter] Also, the music! Simogo's history with game design around music is fascinating to me, going back to Device 6's unexpected use of song, the fragmented music in The Sailor's Dream, to, of course, Sayonara being designed around an original pop album. Lorelei is more muted in this regard, but not without exception.I've always wanted to ask you your opinion on song usage in video games. What compels you to design around, even sometimes sneak fully produced, original pop songs into a game? And do you have any favourite song placements in other video games?Sound and music is the medium that most easily paints images in my head. We usually make playlists before a project has started, with inspiration from specific songs, albums, era, composer, or even specific instruments. We often produce songs before there is even something playable. For example, both Radio Waves and Laser Eyes were made before we had something playable. Music is often the inception of our ideas, dictating the core of the game.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube787kAs for examples in other games, I really like Gusty Garden Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy. It really amplifies the sense of freedom, adventure and majesty of that level. White Noiz from Silent Hill 2 and its opening is another favourite. It has such strange harmonies, with a really unique mood that is neither scary, nor sad, but still completely sells the entire feeling of the game.Im also always a fan of a good credits song that lets you reflect on your experience. Some of my favourites are from Super Mario Bros. 3 (theres a really great rendition of that song on the album Mario & Zelda Big Band Live), as well as the ending music of Yoshis Island.Personally, I hear a little of that Silent Hill 'mood uncertainty' in Lorelei. And dont get me started on Koji Kondowhat Kondo and Yokota did with Gusty Garden Galaxy in particular is so impressive to me. With Nintendo needing a stunner for the Wii and the prompt 'Mario IN SPACE!', it would have been so simple to write the most epic space-opera score of all time. Instead, its got this 'giddy-up' adventure vibe, almost like an American Western. The restraint and the vision with that score is inspiring. And I still dont know how the Mario 3 credits score even plays on the NES, its so complex! Oh, and as far as good 'summation' scores go, I often tell people I want the Staff Roll of Mario 64 played at my funeral...[Laughter]Im way off track! Since were on the topic of music, Id love to hear you reflect a little on Sayonara Wild Hearts. It (somehow) just celebrated its five-year anniversary. Looking back, how do you feel today about everything you achieved with that game? Is there anything there you want to return to in the future, or would even do differently? There are always workflow, technical solutions, and pipeline things that you understand after (or even during) a project that you should have done differently, but I think the released game does what it sets out to do quite well. Theres no specific thing we want to return to or explore more, but we always bring in thoughts and experiences to the next project to make it more enjoyable to work on, and as such Lorelei and the Laser Eyes was a more joyful project for us, even though it has a much more sombre tone.Im dying to knowdo you know if Queen Latifah ever played the game? [Editors note: Queen Latifah voices the narrator.]I don't know if Queen Latifah played the game herself, but I was told she watched gameplay before the recording session.Id like to think she did, and fixed her broken heart. [laughter] Alright, heres my last question to you, Simon: Can you solve this puzzle?Image: SimogoNo, it's too tough, I'll never be able to solve it!Thank you to Simon for talking to us across the world from his home in Sweden, and outside his native language! This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is out now on Switch (it's also coming to PS4/5 on 3rd December), and it's very good. • Bluesky promises more verification and an aggressive approach to impersonation
    techcrunch.com
As more celebrities and popular influencers join Bluesky, the fast-growing social media service has been facing more concerns around impersonation and verified identity. The Bluesky Safety team posted Friday that the company has updated its impersonation policy to be more aggressive, adding that impersonation and handle-squatting accounts will be removed. The company said it should be able to act on impersonation reports more quickly because it has quadrupled the size of its moderation team, though theres still a large backlog of moderation reports due to an influx of new users.Anecdotally, over the past few weeks Ive noticed a growing number of Bluesky posts asking, Is this a real person or a parody account? with no definitive answer in the replies. Other users have also begun putting together their own verification lists and badges. One reason for the confusion: Bluesky lacks a verified user badge like the one popularized on Twitter (now known X, which itself replaced the old verification with a paid subscription). Instead, it relies on other signals, like verified domains in user handles, to signal the trustworthiness of an account for example, you can tell someone is actually affiliated with Bluesky if their handle includes the bsky.team domain. On that front, Bluesky also said its working behind the scenes to help many organizations and high-profile individuals set up their verified domain handles. As for parodies and fan accounts, the company said theyre allowed, but they must clearly label themselves in both the display name and bio to help others know the account isnt official. And Bluesky said identity churning is not allowed, so if you set up an impersonation account just to gain followers and switch to a different identity that is no longer impersonation to keep that account, your account will be removed.Bluesky CEO Jay Graber said earlier this week that the company could eventually do more work to verify accounts while also enabling other apps or organizations to provide their own verification: They can choose to trust us the Bluesky teams verification or they could do their own.Similarly, the Bluesky Safety team concluded its updates by saying, We also hear your feedback: users want more ways to verify their identity beyond domain verification. Were exploring additional options to enhance account verification, and we hope to share more shortly.

  • Elon Musk files for injunction to halt OpenAIs transition to a for-profit
    techcrunch.com
Attorneys for tech billionaire Elon Musk have filed for a preliminary injunction against OpenAI, several of its co-founders, and its investor and close collaborator, Microsoft, to prevent OpenAI and other named defendants from engaging in what Musks counsel claims is anticompetitive behavior. The motion for an injunction, which was filed late on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman, Microsoft, LinkedIn co-founder and former OpenAI board member Reid Hoffman, and former OpenAI board member and Microsoft VP Dee Templeton of various illicit activities and seeks to halt them. The allegations include:Discouraging investors from backing OpenAI rivals like Musks own AI company, xAI. Benefitting from wrongfully obtained competitively sensitive information through OpenAIs connections with Microsoft. Converting OpenAIs governance structure to a for-profit and transferring any material assets, including intellectual property owned, held, or controlled by OpenAI, Inc., its subsidiaries, or affiliates.Causing OpenAI to do business with organizations in which any defendant has a material financial interest.Attorneys for Musk assert that irreparable harm will ensue if the injunction isnt granted. Plaintiffs and the public need a pause, they wrote in the filing. An injunction to preserve what is left of OpenAIs nonprofit character, free from self-dealing, is the only appropriate remedy. If not, the OpenAI promised to Musk and the public will be long gone by the time the court reaches the merits.Musks lawsuit against OpenAI, which at its core accuses the company of abandoning its original nonprofit mission to make the fruits of its AI research available to all, waswithdrawnin July, only to berevivedlate this summer. In anamended complaint in November, the suit named new defendants including Microsoft, Hoffman, and Templeton, and two new plaintiffs: Shivon Zilis, a Neuralink exec and ex-OpenAI board member, and xAI.Musk has argued in previous suits that hes been defrauded out of more than $44 million he says he donated to OpenAI by preying on his well-known concerns about the existential harms of AI. Musk, one of OpenAIs co-founders, left the company in 2018 over disagreements about its direction.Musk formed xAI last year. Soon after, the company releasedGrok, a flagship generative AI model that now powers a number of features on Musks social network, X (formerly known as Twitter). xAI also offers an API that allows customers to build Grok into third-party apps, platforms, and services. In the motion for an injunction, Musks attorneys allege OpenAI is depriving xAI of capital by extracting promises from investorsnot to fund it and the competition. In October, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI demanded investors in its latest funding round abstain from also funding any of OpenAIs rivals, including xAI.Musk has verified that at least one major investor in OpenAIs October funding round has subsequently declined to invest in xAI, counsel for Musk wrote. Of course, xAI has had no trouble raising money lately. Reportedly, the startup closed a $5 billion round this month with participation from prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Fidelity. With around $11 billion in the bank, xAI is one of the best-funded AI ventures in the world.Musks motion for an injunction also alleges that Microsoft and OpenAI continue to illegally share proprietary information and resources, and that several of the defendants, including Altman, are engaging in self-dealing that harms marketplace competition. For example, the filing notes, OpenAI selected Stripe, a payment platform in which Altman has material financial interests, as OpenAIs payment processor. (Altman is said to have made billions from his Stripe holdings.)Microsoft, which first backed OpenAI in early 2019, has ramped up the partnership over the last several years, investing a total of ~$13 billion in exchange for whats effectively a 49% stake in the companys earnings. Microsoft has also allowed OpenAI to make extensive use of its cloud hardware resources, enabling the startup to train, fine-tune, and run AI models like those that powerChatGPT.Hoffmans position on the boards of both Microsoft and OpenAI while also a partner at investment firm Greylock gave Hoffman a privileged view into the companies dealings, Musks attorneys argue. (Hoffman stepped down from OpenAIs board in 2023.) As for Templeton, whom Microsoft brieflyappointedas a nonvoting board observer at OpenAI, Musks counsel argues that she was in a position to facilitate agreements between Microsoft and OpenAI that would violate antitrust rules.Maintaining OpenAIs charitable status pending final resolution and halting further self-dealing transactions by Altman protect both the organizations founding mission and the public interest in proper administration of charities, Musks attorneys wrote. Counsel for Musk wrote that if an injunction isnt granted, OpenAI might lack sufficient funds to pay damages were the court to eventually rule in Musks favor. (OpenAI is reportedly spending more than $5 billion and isnt close to breaking even.) Moreover, they say, were a judge to disallow OpenAIs nonprofit transition, itd be virtually impossible to unwind the companys transactions without widespread investor loss should OpenAI continue to accept new investments. No objective observer can look at OpenAI today and say it bears any resemblance whatsoever to what it promised to be, attorneys for Musk wrote. Plaintiffs respectfully request that the court maintain the status quo and pause defendants worsening behavior until final disposition. In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said, Elons fourth attempt, which again recycles the same baseless complaints, continues to be utterly without merit. The company had previously sought to dismiss Musks suit, calling it blusterous and baseless. The post has been updated with a statement from OpenAI.

  • New QIH 200 URC Hot Isostatic Press by Quintus Technologies
    3dprintingindustry.com
High-pressure technology specialist Quintus Technologies has introduced the QIH 200 URC, a new Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) at Formnext 2024.This system is designed to enhance production workflows by consolidating multiple heat treatment processes into a single system.Offering enhanced productivity, it focuses on improving the ductility and fatigue resistance of high-performance materials, including components produced through 3D printing. Industries such as aerospace, medical, and energy stand to benefit significantly from this innovation, particularly in the densification of AM parts, says the company. As the industry leader in advanced Hot Isostatic Pressing technology for over 70 years, we have noted exceptional interest in new manufacturing approaches that improve quality, lower operational cost, and significantly reduce both lead times and environmental impact, says Johan Hjrne, who was recently appointed CEO of Quintus Technologies. He noted that the QIH 200 URC press reflects Quintus Technologies focus on materials science and materials processing research, aligning with their commitment to supporting customers goals for innovation, productivity, and sustainability. The new QIH 200 URC. Image via Quintus Technologies.Streamlined heat treatment for AMWidely regarded as a crucial technique for parts manufacturers, HIP has been instrumental in refining the properties of materials made using casting, powder metallurgy (PM), and additive methods. Until now, post-HIP heat treatment steps often required outsourcing, leading to delays and increased expenses.Quintus seeks to address these inefficiencies with its proprietary High Pressure Heat Treatment (HPHT) process. In the past, companies have relied on Quintus HIP systems for post-processing. Back in 2020, the company supplied its QIH 60 M URC to Italian post-processing company PRES-X.Focused on optimizing AM production lines, PRES-X serves clients in the aerospace and automotive sectors. This fan-driven HIP is equipped with a hot zone measuring 16.14 x 39.37 inches (410 x 1,000 mm) and operates at temperatures up to 1,400C. It can achieve a maximum pressure of 207 MPa and supports a workload weight capacity of 600 kg.A year before that, German 3D printing service provider FIT Additive Manufacturing Group (FIT AG) incorporated a HIP system from Quintus Technologies. This system is utilized to ensure that post-processed metal 3D printed parts meet stringent quality assurance standards.Carl Fruth, CEO of FIT AG, noted that the company spent five years analyzing the quality requirements of 250 international industrial clients, ultimately identifying HIP as a solution to numerous quality challenges. He highlighted that combining AM with HPHT yields impressive results and expressed confidence in the significant benefits this partnership would provide to their customers. These real-world applications of Quintuss HIP systems underline the demand for advanced post-processing solutions, a need the QIH 200 URC addresses with its advanced capabilities. The Quintus Hot Isostatic Press. Explained by Quintus, the system achieves this by combining stress-relief, HIP, high-temperature solution-annealing, high-pressure gas quenching, and ageing or precipitation hardening into a single furnace cycle.A key feature of the QIH 200 URC is the Uniform Rapid Cooling (URC) which ensures precise and repeatable performance for a variety of heating, densification, and cooling parameters. Digital connectivity and advanced control systems allow manufacturers to customize processes with unmatched precision, further expanding its versatility. With a hot zone measuring 34.6 inches (880 mm) in diameter and 84.6 inches (2.15 m) in height, the press offers an operating pressure of up to 207 MPa (30,000 psi) and temperatures as high as 2,552F (1,400C). These specifications enable maximum theoretical density, improving the mechanical properties of components across various manufacturing methods.Parts produced through electron beam melting (EBM), selective laser melting (SLM), casting, and powder metallurgy all benefit from significant enhancements in ductility and fatigue resistance.Operational support is provided through the Quintus Care program, designed to maximize system reliability and performance while maintaining predictable costs. This program grants participants access to Application Centers staffed by materials science experts who assist in resolving technical challenges and optimizing parameters such as heating and cooling rates for specific material properties. As manufacturers increasingly adopt advanced heat treatment methods, Quintus aims to address these demands with its new launch by offering a streamlined and efficient solution that enhances material properties and ensures manufacturing reliability.Vote now in the2024 3D Printing Industry Awards!Catch up on all the news fromFormnext 2024.Want to share insights on key industry trends and the future of 3D printing? • Niagara: Camera friendly sprite rotation
    realtimevfx.com
To mimic incompressibility in fluid dynamics, its often nice to have particles rotate counter to their velocity vectorBut this starts to break down when viewed from another angle, due to the nature of sprites rotating relative to the cameraA fun lil solution to this is to adjust the rotation based on the relationship between the viewing angle and the velocity vectorThis gives us the same perceived rotation from both anglesWhich is also really effective for shockwave effects
