  • No social media for people under 16: what that means for UX
    uxdesign.cc
Rethinking experiences for young people outside socialmedia.Lucas and Mateus playing on the jungle gym afterschoolAustralia has made the decision to ban children under 16 from accessing social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. The Prime Minister said that it puts Australia at the vanguard of efforts to protect the mental health and well-being of children from detrimental effects of social media, such as online hate or bullying. This policy isnt just a step forward for youth protection; its also a turning point for digital designers. Without social media, we need to rethink how we design for an audience outside the reach of algorithms. And thats a goodthing. My point here isnt to debate the banwhich I fully supportbut to explore what this means for digital services that rely on social media, and more importantly, for responsible design. This moment calls us to think beyond the obvious and embrace more thoughtful solutions focused on ethically protecting and engaging youngpeople. How Teenage Girls Believe Each Social Media Feature Affects ThemSource: Common Sense / The New York Times. URL: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/learning/whats-going-on-in-this-graph-dec-6-2023.htmlSocial login and the echoes of addictive designI had been following this topic closely, and the day the decision was announced, the impact on social login popped into my mind while I was driving. That thought is what led me to start writing, trying to understand how this change affects digital design morebroadly.Social login is one of those brilliant ideas that ended up becoming a standard. It was marketed as the solution to everything: less friction, more speed, greater personalization. And indeed, it brought benefits:One-click formsAuto-validated profilesConvenientat least it seemssoBut convenience comes at a cost. Over the years, social login has become part of the machinery for services that not only depend on it but have built their strategies around hyper-personalized profiles and addictive algorithms. Additionally, the fact that young people are present on social media has enabled the creation of interfaces and interaction flows designed to maximize engagement, exploiting behaviors ranging from seeking social validation to binge consumption ofcontent. If social login is removed from the equation, and if the presence of this audience on social platforms decreases, how will these services adapt? More importantly: is this the moment to rethink strategies that prioritize screen time over well-being?How Often Teens Say They Use Each PlatformSource: Pew Research Center / The New York Times. URL: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/learning/whats-going-on-in-this-graph-dec-6-2023.htmlPractical impacts: Redesigning interfacesWithout social media as mediators, digital services need to adapt to this new landscape.1. The end of social logins comfortzonePlatforms like games and educational tools must rethink entry flows without sociallogin:Rethink entry flows: How do you avoid friction when social login is no longer anoption?Offer more intuitive and secure methods, such as simplified email authentication.2. Identity management: A new burden for youngpeopleFor those who grew up with one-click login, creating and managing multiple accounts could become a new source of friction:More credentials to remember, more passwords toforget.A higher risk of losing access to important services.3. Redefining forms and experiencesForms need to evolve. Simplicity is no longer optional; its mandatory:Fewer fields, more automation.Clear instructions to ensure accurate dataentry. The impact doesnt stopthereWhen social media stops being the backbone of digital experiences:Personalization withoutprofilesWithout direct access to social media data, how can we offer relevant content without invading users privacy? This is an invitation to explore personalization models that respect users rather than exploitthem. An opportunity for healthy disconnectionWithout incessant notifications and endless feeds, young people can rediscover the world beyond screens. For designers, this means creating digital experiences that complement, rather than compete with, offlinelife.Parental responsibility andbeyondPerhaps issues like this should be solved at home with community support, without state interference. I say this as a father of two children, with whom I work daily to balance screen time and offline activities. But the truth is that things have spiraled out of control. Unchecked access to social media goes beyond the family sphere and has already impacted society on a structural level. Decisions like this are necessary, even if they force us to rethink practices and responsibilities that should ideally be resolved athome.Mateus, my 3-year-old son, sitting in our backyard, painting with watercolors, and Lucas, my older son, petting the rabbit Fumaa while painting with gouache, also sitting in the backyard.Responsible Design: A call for ethical innovationWe need to rethink our priorities as creators of digital experiences. Its no longer about engaging at all costs. Its about creating safe, educational experiences that respect boundaries and promote well-being.What do we need todo?Abandon addictive practices: Social media thrived by keeping us glued to screens. Its time to break thiscycle. How to Implement:Introduce Design Friction: Add conscious pauses or stopping cues, such as reminders to take breaks after a certain time ofuse.Transparent Metrics: Allow users to track their time spent and set usage limits within theapp.Whos Leading byExample:Apples Screen Time: Provides tools for users to monitor and limit app usage, fostering healthier digitalhabits.YouTubes Take a Break Reminders: Prompts users to pause autoplay and step away from the platform.Headspace: A meditation app intentionally designed to guide users through focused sessions, avoiding distractions and excessive engagement.Make privacy the foundation: Design without relying on sensitive data or excessive collection. How to Implement:Adopt Privacy by Design Principles: Build systems that require minimal data to function and ensure user control over their information.Local Data Processing: Keep sensitive operations, such as biometric authentication, on the device rather than transferring data to externalservers.Whos Leading byExample:Apple: Processes Face ID and fingerprint data directly on devices, ensuring that sensitive information never leaves the userscontrol.Signal: A messaging platform that uses end-to-end encryption and collects virtually no metadata, focusing on privacy-first communication.DuckDuckGo: Offers a search engine that avoids user tracking, prioritizing privacy without sacrificing usability.Promote digital education: Teach young people good habits at home, in schools, and within their communities. How to Implement:Collaborate with Schools: Develop tools and programs for educators to teach digital literacy.Create In-App Educational Features: Include modules or tips on safe and balanced internet use within platforms.Whos Leading byExample:Googles Be Internet Awesome: A program aimed at teaching children digital safety and citizenship through interactive games and resources.Common Sense Media: Offers curated content and advice to families, helping them make informed decisions about media consumption.Khan Academy: Provides educational resources and guidance on the ethical use of technology in learning environments.Designing a newtomorrowBanning social media for those under 16 is not a step backward; its progress. Its an opportunity to rethink digital design and embrace more ethical and inclusive practices. If this wave reaches other countries, I hope we are readynot just ready, but leading the way toward a more responsible and, above all, healthier digitalfuture.Further readingTackling addictive social media practices:Harvard Health Publishing. The Forerunner, Instinct, Vivoactive, and Venu lines all have models on sale today at 20% off or more. Older models are on sale as well. Here are my favorites that you should buy while their sale lasts. The Venu 3, Venu 3S, and Venu 2 Sq are over $100 offGarmins Venu 3 smartwatch (and its smaller version, the 3S) are not only excellent fitness trackers, they also include true smartwatch functions like the ability to make calls via Bluetooth and send voice texts. The Venu 3 (45 mm) and Venu 3S (41 mm) are both on sale for $349.99, more than $100 under their usual price. This is an older model without quite as many of the fancy features of the Venu 3 (no voice calls, for example) but its still a very nice smartwatch at a great price. (Ive been wearing one lately, to test for an upcoming review, and Id say its one of the best general-purpose fitness watches out there.) The Vivoactive 5 is $199.99 right now, $100 less than its usual price. Garmin Vivoactive 5 $189.00 at Amazon $299.99 Save $110.99 Get Deal Get Deal $189.00 at Amazon $299.99 Save $110.99 The Forerunner 55 is $50 offIf youve been waiting for a good deal on a Garmin Forerunner running watch, now is your time. The older models (most ending in -55 or -45) have already had some price drops, and as of today the newer Forerunners (most ending in -65) are $50 to $100 off their usual prices. The Forerunner 55 is a great basic running watch with GPS and heart rate tracking, and it has sleep tracking, too. As with all the Forerunners, it has physical buttons so you can stop and start laps without fumbling with a touchscreen, and running-specific features like race predictions and PacePro screens that can guide you to a specific finish time in a race. The Forerunner 55 still has the older style MIP screen, which is reflective in sunlight but uses a backlight (which can turn on when you flick your wrist) to show you the screen at night. Its $149.99 now, $50 less than usual. The 165 has an AMOLED touchscreen, bright and high resolution. It has a built-in compass and altimeter, can measure your HRV, and has tons of running analytics like training effect and running dynamics. Its also got breadcrumb navigation features. Its $199.99 or $249.99 for the Music version, both $50 off its usual price. It has everything the 165 has, plus extra analytics runners will love, like training status, training readiness, and training load. Its also got multi-band GPS for better accuracy, and comes standard with the ability to store and play music. It comes in two sizes: The Forerunner 265 is 46 millimeters, and the Forerunner 265S (S for "small") is 42 mm. Both are $349.99 right now, which is $100 less than its usual price. The biggest difference is that it has an MIP screen (reflective, low power, low resolution). Some Garmin devotees love the MIP screens, especially in bright sunlight; some prefer the newer AMOLED screens. I can't tell you what you'll like better, but I can tell you that the Forerunner 255 Music is $293.80 right now, down from $399, and still over $50 less than its newer sibling. All of the 265 models can store and play music, while that feature costs extra in the 255something to pay attention to as you're comparison shopping. There is also a 255S, with the smaller screen, for $249.99 but no music. As with many older-model tech items, it can be tricky to find the combination of features you want in a model that's still in stock. The only 255S I'm seeing with music is this refurbished model for $269.80, but there may well be others out there. The 965 has everything the 265 does, plus extra analytics like an endurance score, andthis is the big thing for many of its fansbuilt-in maps. Its battery life is also through the roof: Where most Garmin watches last one to two weeks on a charge, the 965 gives you nearly a month. (23 days, versus 13 for the 265, according to Garmins official numbers.) The Forerunner 965 is on sale for $499.99 right now, $100 less than usual. • The Best Robot Lawnmower I Tested All Year Is $400 Off for Black Friday
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. The Mammotion Yuka 1500 was the best new robot lawnmower I tested this year. It has exceptional RTK positioning, the ultra rugged wheels are unbothered by uneven terrain, and it has multi-zone management so you can share your mower with your neighbors. During Black Friday, it's discounted 20%, which brings the price down to $1,648 (originally $2,048). Mammotion Yuka 1500 Robot Lawnmower $1,648.00 at Amazon $2,048.00 Save $400.00 Get Deal Get Deal $1,648.00 at Amazon $2,048.00 Save $400.00 Before I tested the Yuka 1500, I favored the Mammotion Luba. It surpassed other mowers in reliability, stability, and consistency to a degree that I was shocked its design and features weren't being ripped off by other companies. The only problemand I mean, truly, the only problemis that it's a lot of machine for a smaller lawn. At the end of summer, Mammotion shipped me the solution to this problem, the Yuka 1500.In fact, the Yuka 1500 improves on some aspects of the Luba, with a self-emptying feature and voice control. The Yuka can mow your lawn or just sweep it for leaves, mulch them at the same time, and then dump them wherever you please. It's so satisfying that it's become a drinking game where friends come over to watch while we drink around the fire pit. The Yuka is only going to mow up to 1500m2, but that's still like .37 acres, and you can adjust the height and mowing pattern easily to achieve those precious mowing tracks. To train it on your lawn, you just walk it around the yard with the remote; it'll avoid obstacles within the area on its own. While you won't need the Yuka until next year, buy it while it's discounted, tuck it away for spring, and you'll have something to look forward to. Call quality isn't the best, and it won't auto-pause when you take out an earbud, but its warm sound, powerful ANC, eight-ish hours of battery life and comfy design all impress for the money. This deal ties the lowest price we've seen. Also available at Anker with a coupon.Bose QuietComfort headphones for $199 ($150 off): The latest version of Bose's iconic QC headphones, these cans have excellent ANC, a comfortable (if a bit dated) design, 24 hours of battery life and a quick-charge feature that will get you two hours of battery after just 15 minutes of them being plugged in. Also available at Bose.BoseMicrosoft Surface Laptop 7 (13.8-inch) for $899 ($300 off): We gave the latest Surface Laptop a review score of 88 earlier this year, and we currently recommend it as a great mainstream ultraportable in our laptop buying guide. The caveat is that it runs on an ARM processor, which performs well but may not work with every app or peripheral you use. If you can live with that, though, the bright 120Hz display, upscale aluminum design and long battery life all impress. If you prefer a bigger screen, a 15-inch version with a quicker Snapdragon X Elite chip and a 256GB SSD is down to a low of $1,053. Also available at Best Buy.PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller for $54 ($21 off): If someone on your list already has a PS5 (or if that someone is you), now's the time to stock up on extra controllers. These have a comfortable design and some of the best haptics we've tried on any console controller. Also available at Sony.Xbox Wireless Controller for $40 ($20 off): This is another deal weve seen a few times before, but its a decent $5 to $15 off the Series X/S pads typical street price, depending on which color you pick. Several different models are on sale, with some of the more vibrant colorways available for $45 or $50. Also available at Best Buy, Target and others.Elden Ring for PS5 for $20 (67 percent off): Elden Ring is one of our favorites for most consoles, and you'll be hard-pressed to find it cheaper than this right now. It offers a rich, open world to explore and, depending on your play style, you can pursue a path as difficult as you want. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for $30 ($40 off): Its story may run in place at times, but Tears of the Kingdom remains a prime example of an open-world game done right. Its world doesnt kowtow to the player at every turn, and its delightful contraption-building mechanics provide a similar sense of freedom in solving puzzles. If Walmart runs out of stock, Target and Best Buy also have the game for $40, which is the second-best price weve tracked.Crucial X9 Pro (1TB) portable SSD for $80 ($21 off): The Crucial X9 Pro is our pick for the best portable SSD, offering dependable performance for most everyday tasks in a rugged, compact design. The 1TB version fell as low as $60 last year, but this is the largest discount weve seen in 2024. Also available at B&H, Best Buy and Newegg.Samsung Pro Plus (1TB) microSD card for $90 ($30 off): If you want a 1TB card and don't mind paying for better performance, the Pro Plus is the top overall recommendation in our microSD card buying guide. It tested faster than the Lexar card above across our benchmarks, with a particular edge in random speeds. That means it should play a bit nicer in a portable gaming PC or a device like the Raspberry Pi, where itd more frequently have to access smaller bits of data in random locations. This is a new low for the 1TB model, which Samsung released earlier this year. Also available at Samsung and B&H.Peacock one-year subscription for $20 (75 percent off): The Peacock Cyber Monday deal is back this year, bringing the price of one year of access to the ad-supported tier down to only $20. Note that the subscription will automatically renew at the regular rate after the first year, and the deal is only available to new subscribers who are not currently paying for Peacock Premium or Premium Plus.Audible Premium Plus for $0.99/month for three months + $20 Audible credit ($64 off): Those who don't currently subscribe to Audible can get three months of the audiobook service's Premium Plus plan for $1. Normally, the service costs $15 per month after a 30-day free trial. As a refresher, Premium Plus is Audible's upper tier: In addition to giving access the full Audible Plus library, it lets you keep one title from a curated selection of audiobooks each month. We wouldn't call it essential, but if you've been on the fence, this is a good way to see if it'd work for you. Just note that the plan will auto-renew until you cancel. Plus, you'll now also get an additional $20 Audible credit to use at your discretion.Amazon Kindle Unlimited for $1 for three month ($35 off): Amazon's ebook subscription service gives you access to a catalog of thousands titles for unlimited reading, select Audible audiobooks to listen to and included magazines to read. Prime members can get a different deal: two months for only $5.MasterClass Premium for $10/month ($10 off): Premium subscriptions, which include access for up to six devices and offline mode, are half off for the holidays. MasterClass' other subscription tiers are also discounted. Those who love learning and want to pick up a new hobby (or refine an existing one) can take courses with some of the best in their respective fields.ExpressVPN two-year plan plus six extra months for $150 (82 percent off): Our top pick for best VPN for travelers provides access to tons of servers and had some of the fastest connections of any VPN service we tested. In addition to a VPN, this subscription tier gives you access to an ad blocker and password manager.reMarkablereMarkable 2 bundles starting at $529 ($89 off): Our top pick for the best E Ink tablet for most people has now been discounted when you pick up one of its folio cases and a marker to go along with it. The reMarkable 2 provides an excellent, distraction-free reading and writing experience, plus it has handy integrations with Google Drive and Dropbox.Dyson Airwrap for $499 ($100 off): This multipurpose styling tool uses the Coanda effect to create curls without excessive heat. It comes with a bunch of other attachments so it can be used as a hairdryer, heated brush and more.Google Pixel Watch 3 for $280 ($70 off): Google's latest smartwatch is down to an all time low price. This is the model we recommend for anyone with an Android phone in our guide to the best smartwatches and it earned an 84 in our review. It detects workouts quickly, has an extra long battery life and is one of the more attractive smartwatches on the market. The deal applies to the 41mm size with GPS only but the larger and cellular-enabled models are on sale too. Also at Best Buy and Target.Google Nest Indoor security camera (wired) for $70 ($30 off): Google's security camera can tell the difference between people, animals and vehicles while it's monitoring your home, and it supports 1080p video, night vision and two-way audio.Theragun Mini 2.0 for $149 ($50 off): This compact massager makes a great gift for a beloved parent or anyone else you think could use a little more TLC. It supports a couple of different head attachments that help relieve different muscles of the body and its arguably the easiest of Therguns devices to throw into a carry on or gym bag. Also available at Therabody.Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer for $280 ($70 off): One of our favorite air fryers, this machine does a lot more than just air fry thanks to its 11 cooking modes, and while it's larger than a typical air fryer, that means it can cook larger things like a full turkey or chicken.Kindle Paperwhite (2024) for $130 ($30 off): The latest version of the Paperwhite has speedier performance, a higher-contrast screen, a built-in warm light and 12 weeks of battery life.Echo for $55 ($45 off): We consider this to be the best smart speaker for $100 or less at the moment thanks to its loud audio with good bass quality, the ability to pair two together for stereo sound and Alexas utility.Amazon Echo Spot for $45 ($35 off): This recently revived smart display is billed as a smart alarm clock, and it features a customizable screen, big sound for its size and all the perks for Alexa voice commands.Ring pan and tilt security camera for $50 ($30 off): This security camera joined the Ring lineup only a few months ago, and this is the best price we've seen on it. It's part of a larger Ring sale that discounts home security gear by up to 50 percent.Blink Mini 2 (two-pack) for $35 ($35 off): The newest Blink Mini wired security camera came out earlier this year and it supports 1080p video recordings, a wider field of view than the previous model and improved low-light performance. It may be wired, but you can use it outside if you wish provided you have the separate $10 weather-resistant adapter.Billy Steele for EngadgetBeats Pill for $100 ($50 off): Beats came back to the Bluetooth speaker market with the completely redesigned Pill and we think it was worth the wait. The durable unit earned a spot on our Bluetooth speaker guide and an 83 in our review. It offers much improved sound quality with impressive bass and full mids. You also get a long, 24-hour battery life and lossless audio over USB-C. Also at Walmart.JBL Clip 5 for $50 ($30 off): Its tiny, portable and brings its own clip along with it. Youll get 12 hours of listening from its waterproof body and the whole thing weighs just over half a pound.Sonos Era 100 for $199 ($50 off): The Sonos Era 100 is our pick for the best midrange smart speaker. We like the excellent sound quality plus it pairs well with other Sonos devices. It has Alexa built-in, so it can handle regular smart home duties, but itll also make your music sound far better than any spherical Echo can.Hisense U8N 4K TV (55-inch) for $649 ($450 off): The U8N is the next step up from the U7N in Hisense's TV lineup, so it should provide better colors, contrast and brightness across the board. If you don't mind buying a smaller panel for around the same price, this is another new low. Also at Best Buy.Samsung QN90D QLED TV (43) for $898 ($400 off): The Samsung QN90D is another high-end LED TV for those willing to trade the deep contrast and wide viewing angles of a good OLED set for higher brightness. Theres still no Dolby Vision, and most reviewers we trust suggest that the Hisense U8N is a better value. This set has two more HDMI 2.1 ports, though, plus it comes in a wider range of sizes, all of which offer similar performance. Also available at Samsung and B&H.Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ for $150 ($70 off): Our top pick for the best budget Android tablet sports an 11-inch 90Hz display, a microSD card slot for extra storage and a hefty battery. Also available at Samsung.iRobot Roomba Vac robot vacuum (Q0120) for $149 (40 percent off): This entry-level robot vacuum has strong suction power with three cleaning modes and smart navigation, and you can control it and set cleaning schedules from the iRobot mobile app.Dyson V15 Detect Absolute cordless vacuum for $500 ($250 off): This is our top pick for the best cordless vacuum you can get right now thanks to its excellent suction power, relatively light weight and good battery life. This model comes with a Fluffy Optic cleaning head that illuminates the ground in front of you so you can see where the most debris lies, and the pack-up includes three additional cleaning head attachments.Solo Stove Bonfire Backyard Bundle for $400 ($180 off): Solo Stove Cyber Monday deals include up to 30 percent off fit pit bundles that give you all of the necessary accessories to make the most out of your new fire pit. • Shark's excellent AI Ultra robot vacuum is half off for Cyber Monday
    www.engadget.com
Robot vacuums can be great helpers around the home, but theyre often quite expensive. Thankfully, Cyber Monday deals on these machines have come in clutch, knocking hundreds of dollars off the sticker prices of some of the most high-end machines weve tested. A version of one of our top picks, this Shark AI Ultra robot vacuum, is half off and down to $300. Thats just about a record-low price, and this model comes with a self-emptying base so you rarely have to interact with it if you dont want to. As mentioned, the Shark AI Ultra is one of Engadgets favorite robovacs; in fact, its the model our reviewer thinks most people should buy. The AI Ultra offers reliable cleaning performance, accurate in-home mapping and an app that makes it easy to get the most out of your new vacuum. Another consideration is the AI Ultra comes with a base station that features a bagless design. In our view, thats one of the primary reasons to buy Sharks robovac over competing models. While some of the AI Ultras rivals will cost you less upfront, over the lifetime of one of those devices you may end up spending more due to their potential reliance on proprietary garbage bags. The AI Ultra is also great if you value a vacuum thats quiet. In our testing, Sharks model produced significantly less noise than some of the other robovacs Engadget tested. It also did a commendable job of avoiding cat toys and other obstacles, with an object detection feature that allows the robovac to detect things as small as four inches. As long as you dont need a built-in mop, the Shark AI Ultra is a great purchase, especially at $300 off. Check out all of the latest Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals here. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/deals/sharks-excellent-ai-ultra-robot-vacuum-is-half-off-for-cyber-monday-120022214.html?src=rss
