Is it possible to have both pride and humility?
A Vox reader asks: What is humility? How can I become more aware of being humble, and why is pride always prevalent in us humans over humility? The concept of humility can be elusive in a culture that places a premium on (and even requires) constant self-aggrandizement. One who is truly humble might possess a graciousness despite their accomplishments, an openness to other ways of being and thinking. Encountering a humble person feels rare these days. Political figures are rewarded for their hardheadedness and self-righteousness. In the workplace, those who tout their achievements are more likely to be considered for promotions. Arguments erupt and drag on for days on social media when people dig in their heels and fail to acknowledge others experiences. When admitting fault can feel so threatening to ones sense of self, some people have a hard time seeing themselves as fallible at all. Lately, it appears as if the person who screams the loudest and holds true to their convictions at all costs ultimately wins.Related:How to admit youre wrongHumility is still worth striving for, says Daryl Van Tongeren, a professor of psychology at Hope College and author of Humble: Free Yourself from the Traps of a Narcissistic World, but in the right amount. Too little humility and you become arrogant and unwilling to conceive of other points of view. Too much humility and you relinquish your power, status, and worth. The tricky part is finding the middle ground. What is humility in the first place?Van Tongeren defines humility as the ability to know ourselves, check ourselves, and go beyond ourselves. Humility requires self-awareness about your strengths and weaknesses and the power to reel in selfish impulses and the desire to be right. A humble person can identify when theyre wrong and accept blame without getting too defensive. They can also recognize others needs beyond their own. Pride isnt necessarily the inverse of humility. If you view pride as being vain or conceited, then yes, a person with those qualities likely lacks humility. But to be proud of your accomplishments and know your self-worth is more in line with humility than conceit. Extremely humble people already know that theyre worthwhile, Van Tongeren says. Theyre valued, theyre loved, theyre enough. Those who are secure in their self-worth often dont seek the approval of others and may not be as defensive when given negative feedback. That comes across in nearly all aspects of their lives. When we engage the world like that, our relationships get much better, our partners are much more likely to forgive us, theyre more committed to us, Van Tongeren says. Were better citizens. Were less likely to get defensive or aggressive when we interact with people who dont share our ideological viewpoints, and were much more tolerant to people who dont share our particular perspective on something. Are you a humble person? Its fairly difficult to gauge your own humility because people tend to think theyre more skilled, attractive, funny, and, yes, humble than the average person. The desire to see yourself in a positive light overwhelms any objectivity you might have into your own humility, Van Tongeren says: This overly glowing representation of myself makes pride a natural default. To get around these biases, Van Tongeren suggests getting a trusted persons opinion On a scale of one to 10, how humble am I? and to try not to get defensive if you get an answer you dont like. Van Tongeren posed this same question to his wife after he spent a morning on his own pursuits, delaying their departure to the beach by over an hour. She gave him a four on the humility scale. Ive been researching this for a decade. I think about humility all the time, he says, and its still really hard for me. I still find myself falling into traps in which my selfishness takes over. How can I work on being a little more humble? Once you have a somewhat objective starting point, one way to work on humility is to cultivate empathy, Van Tongeren says. That is, to sympathize with the feelings of another, even when you disagree with them, and to put yourself in their shoes to consider their perspective. Van Tongeren acknowledges this can be especially difficult in todays social, cultural, and political climate when people tend to have ideologically rigid points of view. Still, try to give others the benefit of the doubt and try to acknowledge that they might be trying to be a good person, too. A few ways to foster empathy and humility include diversifying your news sources and actively seeking out perspectives that differ from your own. Make an effort to interact with more people who hold these alternative views and attempt to understand their motivations or why they would hold these beliefs. Try to understand, Van Tongeren says, what is it like to be them?Related:How to be enoughTo maximize humility within your relationships, Van Tongeren suggests pausing and thinking about what would be best for the other person. Take time to truly listen to a friend or colleague, as listening increases humility. It helps you realize that its not all about you, he says. You might also consider a time when you werent humble like Van Tongerens thwarted beach plans and how the situation went awry. Now you know what to avoid in similar scenarios. Alternatively, if youre in a relationship with an arrogant, self-centered person, humility might not be the virtue you need, Van Tongeren says. They might take advantage of the fact that youre regularly humble and [are] treating you poorly, he says. In some situations, maybe courage is a better virtue, or justice might be the virtue that needs to be prioritized to either stand up to the person or walk away.Cultivating humility is an internal process, not one you can wish onto another person. So often, people who have historically been marginalized have been told to stay humble when they speak out against wrongdoing or seek a seat at the table. Women in particular are expected to be humble, and are considered arrogant when they share their accomplishments. In that way, humility becomes a weapon. Its not up to you to decide who most needs to be humbled, but instead to act with humility and hope others follow in kind.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. How not to poison your loved ones during your big holiday feast
Not to brag, but Im pretty good in the kitchen; I love a complex pastry project, ferment things with relish (sorry), and am probably above-average at emulsifying a sauce. But there is one scenario involving cooking for others that strikes dread in my heart: getting them sick.Im a doctor with specialty medical training in infectious diseases and public health. If I prepared a meal that sent a crowd of my friends and loved ones running for the bathroom, I might never emerge from the shame hole.I thought I knew everything I needed to know about food safety to avoid eternal public humiliation. Still, as I came to understand while researching this story, even know-it-alls like me have a lot to learn about handwashing, cleaning surfaces and food, storing leftovers, and reducing non-germ risks.Thanksgiving, and the holidays more broadly, are different from other times of the year. People are preparing more dishes for more people than they typically would, says Ben Chapman, a food safety expert who leads the Agricultural and Human Sciences at North Carolina State University. The resulting chaos means less control in the kitchen which often leads to higher risk for both cooks and eaters. Heres the stuff you need to sweat and dont as you take on your next big holiday dinner.Proper handwashing and drying is essentialDO wash your hands a lot. Raw whole turkeys are highly likely to be contaminated with germs that can make people sick, most commonly campylobacter and salmonella. The big risk of touching raw meat in the kitchen is that youll move those germs to surfaces that other people will also be touching a lot. That raises the chance people will get nasties on their hands and in their mouths even if they didnt directly handle the thawing turkey. For that reason, Chapman recommends washing your hands more than you think you need to when preparing a meal for a lot of people. Clean your hands immediately after touching raw meat and dont forget that even a partially thawed turkey can transmit germs. Plain soap and water works fine it doesnt have to be antimicrobial soap to do the job, but you do need to rub the skin all over the hands to get them really clean, including the backs of hands, between fingers, and under the nails. But the real shocker here, at least to me, was when Chapman told me alcohol-based hand sanitizers are actually better for most situations, even if you have watery turkey juice on your mitts. (One situation where sanitizer is inferior to soap: after touching lots of really fatty meat, like sausage or pork. In those situations, use soap to make sure youre cutting through the grease to get at all the germs mixed in.)DONT skip drying em. Its not just the actual handwashing thats important for removing germs from your fingers, Chapman says: Drying hands after washing removes up to 90 percent of the bacteria on the skins surface, so dont ignore this important step.I might go through 10 dish towels on Thanksgiving Day, Chapman says.Theres no need to waste tons of paper towels drying off. Chapman suggests keeping different dish towels in different parts of the kitchen for different purposes, if at all possible. For example: You could keep one dirty towel in a kitchen corner for drying off hands youve washed them after say, holding a raw turkey. On a hook elsewhere in the kitchen, you could keep a clean towel you use for wiping up sauce spills or other less germy messes. Any system can easily break down when random people drift in and out of your kitchen while youre cooking. Its not a bad idea to just chuck used dish towels directly in the wash after mopping up spills of raw meat juices or drying off particularly gross hands. I might go through 10 dish towels on Thanksgiving Day, Chapman says.Clean this, not thatDONT worry about washing your produce. Washing produce removes physical debris, like soil, sand, and dirt. However, it rarely removes germs that make people sick. The reason: When produce is contaminated with pathogens, they often attach just under the surface, within tiny pores in the fruit or vegetable that protect it from being washed away. Fresh produce, unfortunately for us, is our No. 1 source of foodborne illness in the US, Chapman says. And also unfortunately for us as consumers, by the time it gets to me, theres very little I can do.DO take special care if youre going to wash your turkey. Theres no food safety reason to wash your turkey, but a lot of people like to anyway because of personal preference. Chapman prefers wiping debris off with a hand towel (which he then throws straight into the washing machine). However, if you opt to wash your turkey, he suggests being especially fastidious about cleaning your sink afterward. The sink is a food preparation area, Chapman says, as people often rinse lettuce or other vegetables in the sink, and water bouncing off a contaminated basin can splash pathogens onto food that does not later get cooked. If youre a poultry washer, just make sure to clean and sanitize the sink afterward, including the bottom, sides, and rim around the basin. So if youre a poultry washer, just make sure to clean and sanitize the sink afterward, including the bottom, sides, and rim around the basin.DO frequently sanitize your kitchen counters and other surfaces. Because turkey is particularly high-risk for contamination with disease-causing germs, Chapman is bleach forward about sanitizing his kitchens surfaces on Thanksgiving, and he favors a pre-packaged bleach spray (like the ones made by Clorox or Lysol) for getting the job done. If youre really worried about damaging clothes, thats part of the reason why aprons exist, he says. However, you can also use sanitizers that contain quaternary ammonium, which is in most non-bleach disinfectant sprays. As a bonus, its also easier on stainless steel and utensils and alcohol-based cleaners are also quite good. Just dont mix different cleaners together or spray them on the same surface at the same time, as doing so can release toxic gases that can cause serious illnesses or even death. Whatever you choose, stick with it at least for the day.Check your temperaturesDO cook your turkey (and whatevers inside it) to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Turkey and everything inside it should be heated to at least 165 degrees before serving to kill any disease-causing germs. Its fine to cook stuffing on the inside as long as it reaches this temperature. Yes, doing this without turning out a dry turkey requires some finessing; Chapman roasts his stuffed bird at a lower temperature of 325 for a longer time and also strategically deploys foil. DO keep your fridge cold enough. The right refrigerator temperature is cool enough to slow spoilage, but not so cold it freezes milk, lettuce, and other foods high in water content. Chapman sets his to 38 degrees, which he says keeps leftovers good for about a week. He suggests buying a cheap refrigerator thermometer to ensure yours has the perfect climate if it doesnt have a built-in one you can calibrate. DONT bother cooling leftovers before refrigeration. The old rule about bringing leftovers to room temperature before putting them in the fridge is from a time of older refrigerators, when they occasionally allowed interior temperatures to rise above safe levels for food storage. Modern refrigerators dont work that way, so feel free to put leftovers in the fridge while theyre still warm, Chapman says. DONT bother reheating leftovers, unless you want to. So long as food was cooked to the appropriate temperature at the time of your feast and was not left out on the counter for hours before refrigeration, theres no need to reheat leftovers to any particular temperature.Avoid toxins in your cookware and your airDO choose non-nonstick cookware and wood, silicone, or stainless steel cooking utensils. The best bet for cookware is to use products made of glass, stainless or carbon steel, or cast iron. Thats because a lot of nonstick cookware is made with forever chemicals, the shorthand term for per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) that have been linked with a range of cancers and other health conditions. Teflon is one of them, but there are other PFASes out there, and manufacturers arent always transparent about which of the broad panoply of these chemicals are or arent in their products. If you love nonstick cookware, a good bet is to use a pan with a ceramic coating. And if you end up using a nonstick pan coated either with Teflon or another PFAS, you can minimize the release of these chemicals by using only soft (e.g., non-metal) utensils when cooking, avoid heating it while empty, and wash them by hand using gentle cleansers and sponges. And for stirring whatevers in your pot, its a better idea to use wood, silicone, or stainless steel rather than black plastic utensils. Theres a chance albeit a small one these may be made from recycled electronic waste, so avoid them if youre risk-averse.DO ventilate and filter your air while cooking especially with gas. Gas stoves create a lot of pollutants, which is why they typically must be installed with range hoods. Other kinds of cooking can also create pollutants for example, cooking with nonstick pans, grilling, and frying. Unfortunately, range hoods dont always vent the air outdoors sometimes, they just recirculate it inside. So if youre cooking with gas, its a great idea to open a window and turn on a fan if you have those options, and a portable air purifier can also help.A little knowledge can go a long way toward maximizing what makes hosting fun and minimizing the worry your feast will lead to a lifetime of dishonor. Go forth and feed your people!Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. Evercade Alpha review the ultimate Christmas gift for retro gamers
Evercade Alpha review the ultimate Christmas gift for retro gamersGameCentral and Will FreemanPublished November 27, 2024 6:00pmUpdated November 27, 2024 6:00pm Now thats a retro Christmas present to covet (Evercade)If youre serious about your retro gaming, then this feature-packed new cross between a console and an arcade cabinet is well worth hinting to Father Christmas about.Playing arcade games authentically at home can be an extremely costly pursuit, for those looking to indulge their 90s nostalgia. As well as needing the space for an arcade cabinet and a bounty of available tinkering and maintenance time deep pockets are an absolute requirement. Beyond the investment of the cabinet itself, individual arcade games can now prove surprisingly expensive. Most come on slabs of circuit board called arcade PCBs, which are neatly slotted into a cabinet somewhat similar to how cartridge-based consoles function. It is all too easy to spend way into four figures on a single PCB, which is a significant sum for just one game. The rewards for all that effort are tremendous though. Games run exactly as their makers intended, with magnificent performance and crisp, vibrant visuals brought to life by the warm glow of a traditional CRT tube monitor. Playing standing at a proper arcade cab is an unrivalled gaming experience, no matter how well the same games might be emulated on a console or PC.Unfortunately, its a luxury few of us can afford in our homes. Thats where the new Evercade Alpha comes in: an alternative route to the joy that is personal arcade gaming. It takes the compact form of a bartop arcade cabinet, meaning it is designed to sit on a counter or similar although the Alphas natural habitat might be the coffee table or gaming collectibles shelving. For your money, you get a very well-made device that adopts the style of the woody cabinets popular in the West through the 1980s and 1990s. Half-a-dozen games come pre-installed and theres the potential to play hundreds of additional titles, which well get into below. The Alpha is robust, feature rich, and fronted by an arcade-authentic button and stick arrangement, as well as an 8-inch IPS (in-plane switching a type of LCD screen) that is much more comparable to your flatscreen TV than an original tube. The control inputs feel very much up to real arcade standards, even if the button positioning will suit some personal preferences better than others. And that screen does a surprisingly good job in terms of delivering punchy, bright visuals that move elegantly. Youll never beat a tube for displaying and playing older games, but the Alphas IPS takes a thoroughly respectable shot at it.Its 4:3 ratio is a perfect fit for classic games although with no ability to rotate the monitor, titles that were originally released for vertical screens are letterboxed, taking up just the central portion of the screen. On that note, all of the included games are horizontally orientated. Onboard stereo speakers, meanwhile, are far from audiophile quality but provide decent sonic punch and clarity. The whole thing looks wonderful too and is rich in details that will delight arcade fans. The artwork across the undersized cabinet is glorious and nostalgia inducing, the power switch is cleverly disguised as a glowing red coin slot in the classic style, and the marquee (the game logo area above the screen) is backlit, bathing the unit in a soft pool of light, just like the real thing. In the box youll find three swapple marquees, and while the Alpha itself only sports controls for a single player, a second can join by connecting a controller to a USB port. In fact, theres even support for both players linking up their own controller, should you prefer a pad or other alternative for certain titles.Tests have shown a decent range of common gamepads and fight sticks are compatible with the Alpha. You also get a range of display and related options and the ability to remap controls. Unfortunately, theres no HDMI-out to display the games on a full-sized screen one of the few oversights with the device. The Mega Man edition has plenty of non-Mega Man games too (Evercade)Evercades latest comes in two flavours, each ready-loaded with six games, and its own themed cabinet art. Theres the Street Fighter option, which contains Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors Dreams, Street Fighter Alpha 2, and Street Fighter Alpha 3. A selection of brilliant, beloved, and somewhat familiar Capcom Fighters, then albeit without the sublime Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike.Alternatively, you might opt for the unit tested here, the Mega Man edition, which serves up two action platformers from the celebrated Capcom series, plus a decent shmup, and a trio of beat em-ups and hack n slashes. The Mega Man cabs full game list, then, is Mega Man: The Power Battle, Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, Carrier Air Wing, Final Fight, Knights Of The Round, and Strider, blending the titular icons with a selection of relative curios.Which spread of titles appeals the most will come down to your own personal tastes, but both options present a spread of well realised classics that show of the Alpha nicely. As with other Evercade machines, there are also hidden games to unlock, and a monthly extra title, supplied via the internet although the connection doesnt support online multiplayer. It does seem rather a shame that all 12 Capcom releases werent included on a single Alpha, the 229.99 price point considered. Instead, theres an option to buy more expensive Deluxe Editions of each Alpha at 249.99, which come with six switchable marquees, an extra official pad, and a stick and buttons from Sanwa a well-established Japanese outfit known amongst devotees as one of the finest makers of arcade parts in the world. The absence of Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike is a shame (Evercade)Recent years have provided a number of diminutive arcade cabinets, from the Quarter Arcades range, to the Neo Geo Mini, and Taito Egret II Mini. Those machines, however, are rather more in interactive ornament territory, since theyre so aggressively scaled down. They are fun, playable, and utterly delightful, absolutely, but the Alpha has rather more ergonomic chops, as a machine to play somewhat more meaningfully. What really distinguishes it from competitors, however, are the two slots on the front for Evercade cartridges. Evercade refers to a line of console-like devices, from the Evercade VS-R console to the handheld EXP-R. Indeed, the electronic guts of the Alpha are extremely similar to those found in the EXP-R. Importantly, every Evercade device is compatible with the same Evercade cartridges.Over 60 have been released or are inbound, and each contains a number of older games from arcade cabinets, classic consoles, and home computers. It is worth noting here, however, that there are a tiny minority of compatibility issues; specifically that Evercades Namco Museum Collections 1 and 2 do not work with the VS and VS-R consoles.Still, with over 500 games out now, on the various Evercade carts, and more consistently in the works, the Alpha has a huge range of compatible games, many of them hard to acquire on other formats. There really are so many superb games, across systems like the Amiga, Commodore 64, and even the PlayStation and from publishers and developers including Atari, Team 17, Codemasters, Namco, Toaplan, Irem, and Gremlin Graphics.Theres modern indie games too, but the emphasis is largely on titles from the two decades that predate the turn of the new millennium. Not every title will be the perfect partner for arcade controls, but that is where the support for additional controllers comes in. And if youre already the proud owner of a shelf bristling with Evercade games, the Alpha gives you a new way to enjoy your collection especially the arcade titles.Importantly, Evercade games are emulated, meaning that older systems and their games are simulated through software, rather than hardware. Emulation has a bit of a reputation for inconsistent standards when it comes to performance, but in terms of the built-in games, the input latency is so minimal only deeply experienced purists would see much impact on their game playing abilities. The same is true across the Evercade cartridge line, although the odd title can demonstrate a touch of lag. Indeed, the Evercade cart releases sometimes feature warts-and-all authenticity, right down to the occasional original bug. However, most games in the line perform handsomely.More TrendingThe Evercade Alpha ultimately sits in its own space. It is more playable than its tinier rivals, better made and more performance geared than the countless cheap off-brand consoles stuffed with thousands of badly emulated games. Its also more convenient than building your own legally murky option with an option like a Raspberry Pi, and much more affordable than the original hardware. The Evercade Alpha absolutely doesnt rival playing on a fully-fledged cab, and nor does it intend to. If you are a PCB hoarding enthusiast the appeal here is in a machine that allows you to build an expansive interactive archive of great games and let your friends and family loose on them without worrying about those precious PCBs.It might not make the grade if youre chasing world record scores and for serious local multiplayer, things get a little cramped. But for the vast majority with a less obsessive interest in retro games the Alpha provides a wildly fun, if somewhat pricey, means to dive into all manner of classics. Its an eye-catching centrepiece with a knack for drawing in all who pass it, and approaching festivities considered a perfect retro gaming gift if youre feeling generous.Standard Edition: 229.99; Deluxe Edition: 249.99Release Date: 28th November 2024Age Rating: 12 The on/off button is a nice touch (Evercade)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralExclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. The Brief History of Doctor Whos Forced Regenerations
When Patrick Troughtons time as the second Doctor was coming to an end, so much of both the nature of the Doctors ability to cheat death and change faces, as well as their relationship to their people, the mysterious Time Lords, was still unwritten. Wed only seen regeneration once, and The War Gameswhich the BBC recently announced as its next colorization project after last years anniversary release of The Dalekswould also mark the very first time we saw other Time Lords at all. But alongside that introduction, Doctor Who explored an idea it would only rarely return to across the next half-century: what if regeneration itself didnt occur naturally? The Second Doctors Forced Regeneration The second Doctors regeneration at the climax of The War Games is unique in several ways. Trapped and placed on trial by his own people, the Doctor is given a sentence for his crimes of violating the Time Lords sacred policy of non-interference: firstly, that hell be exiled to Earth without use of the TARDIS, and secondly, that he will be regenerated into a new identity as part of that exile. Its the first time we ever see the process considered less as a natural reaction to death, and instead as something that can be actively triggered in some way by the Time Lords themselves, and even more interestingly, its the first time we ever see regeneration treated as a selective process. The Time Lords offer the Doctor a series of potential faces for his next incarnation, all of which he refuses out of protestonly for his captors to then decide that theyll force a new identity on him without the luxury of choice, suggesting that not only is there the capacity for a Time Lord to have regeneration triggered by force through non-fatal means, but also that at least upper echelons of Time Lord society had devised ways to decide what future incarnations of any given Time Lord could be in that process. Its also clear in The War Games that the act of a forced regeneration is deeply traumatic and painful, even compared to the usual traumatic scenario that triggers the process. There stillreally hasnt been a regeneration presented to us in Doctor Who quite like it: the Doctor begins convulsing mid-sentence as he assails his people for their judgement of his actions, his face contorting as we see floating versions of Patrick Troughtons head spin and blur around a dark space, before seeing the Doctor himself plummet into the metaphorical abyss. But whats interesting is that its also the only time weve ever not actually seen the Doctors moment of regeneration into a new incarnation occur on screen: The War Games ends with the Doctor trapped in that black abyss, having to wait another six months until Spearhead From Space opened with Jon Pertwees freshly regenerated Time Lord tumbling out of the TARDIS onto earth, and into Doctor Whos first story broadcast in color.Forced Regeneration In OtherDoctor Who Media John Canning/Polystyle Publications That doesnt mean that the Second Doctors actual regeneration went unseen, though. Six weeks before Spearhead From Space aired, TV Comic published The Night Walkers, the last of its comics to feature Troughtons Doctor. That story established that The War Games didnt actually begin the Doctors regeneration, but instead simply whisked him away to start his exile on Earth, with the second Doctor becoming something of a celebrity in his time on the planet. However, while investigating a case of mysterious walking scarecrows, the Doctor discovers that the animated beings are actually agents of the Time Lords sent to surreptitiously draw the Doctor away from the limelight so they can well, essentially execute him. Its still technically a forced regeneration, brought on by the Time Lords edict, but its still a scarecrow firing squad fatally zapping the Doctor and dragging him back to his TARDIS as his regeneration begins! While the canonicity of the earlyTV Comics stories has never been all too important, this is at least one thing we might see being changed in the upcoming colorization. The trailer released by the BBC featured a brief glimpse of a scene with Troughtons Doctor standing in the TARDIS, glowing with the regenerative energy effect that has become a staple of regeneration inDoctor Who in its modern era, potentially suggesting that well actually get some version of the second Doctors regeneration depicted in the new version of The War Games. But The Night Walkers isnt the only ancillaryDoctor Who material to deal with the idea of forced regenerationit became a major worldbuilding aspect of the War in Heaven, a catastrophic temporal conflict between the Time Lords and a mysterious opponent known only as the Enemy in later Eighth Doctor novels and the unaffiliated spinoff novel and audio drama series, Faction Paradox. Occasionally conflated with what would become the Last Great Time War in contemporaryDoctor Who continuity, the War in Heaven saw soldiers in the Gallifreyan military (referred to inFaction Paradox simply as the House Military, the allied forces of the Great Houses of the Homeworld) eventually bioengineered to have larger regeneration cycles to keep them fighting across generations of conflict, and eventually constructed with artificial biodata to regenerate into increasingly less-humanoid organic weapons of war. Part of that forced genetic evolution would involve missions of forced regeneration that would prime troops to be regenerated into new bodies better suited for upcoming engagements. Forced Regeneration In Modern Doctor Who While forced regeneration is quite rare inDoctor Who, our most prominent examples of it after The War Games come from after the series revival in 2005. The Night of the Doctor, the 2013 short film that finally portrayed the Eighth Doctors regeneration, featured a somewhat similar regenerative process, when the grievously wounded Doctor was given an elixir by the Sisterhood of Karn that both triggered his regeneration and allowed him to select an identity and personality to participate in the Last Great Time War in: the incarnation eventually known simply as the War Doctor. But while elements of the regeneration had parallels to the process seen in The War Games, it wasnt a direct comparison. We see something much more akin to that process during Jodie Whittakers tenure as the Thirteenth Doctor. Initially first glimpsed in the controversial revelation of the Doctors true origins in The Timeless Children, the young being that will be known as the Doctor is seen as the template for the transformation of Gallifreys native people, the Shobogans, into the Time Lords, after a Shobogan scientist, Tecteun, discovers the Doctors natural regenerative capabilities and experiments on them in an attempt to splice that ability into her own peoplea process that sees the Doctors young self forcibly regenerated through multiple identities, before being forcefully regenerated with their memories lost when Tecteun and the now-Time Lords decided to make the origins of regeneration secret. It appears again in Whittakers final story, The Power of the Doctor, where the Master not only manages to forcibly trigger the Doctors regeneration, but hijacks the process so that she is regenerated into the Masters own form and psyche, trapping the Doctors true consciousness in a splinter of their own mind. Again, while there are definitely parallels to the regeneration glimpsed in The War Games here, its not wholly similar: the Doctor managed to reverse the effects of the Masters forced regeneration upon her, ousting his consciousness from her form with seemingly few side-effects until the Master managed to mortally wound her during their conflict anyway, triggering a more traditional regeneration into a new incarnation. The Grey House is a testament to the power of simplicity and harmony. Grey, symbolizing neutrality and introspection, dominates every surface, creating a sense of calm and clarity. The mottled grey surfaces are complemented with monolithic stainless steel elements softened with a cloudy finish, adding a touch of modern sophistication.Save this picture!Often overlooked as a mundane color, grey takes center stage in this residence. Every surface, from walls to furniture, is cloaked in varying shades of the timeless hue. This choice of grey paired with stainless steel, was deliberate, symbolizing neutrality, balance, and introspection. It serves as a canvas upon which the mind can wander freely, devoid of distractions.Save this picture! These elements provide subtle contrast, enhancing the overall aesthetic without disrupting the serene ambiance. The clean lines and minimalist aesthetic evoke a gallery-like atmosphere, where each element is purposefully placed. Large windows throughout the Grey House frame views of the lush garden, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. This connection with nature invites tranquillity into every corner of the home while preserving privacy.Save this picture! In essence, the Grey House is more than just a dwelling - it is a sanctuary for the soul.
