• AUKUS to Develop Battle-winning Hypersonic Weapons in New Arrangement
    3dprintingindustry.com
The UK, Australian and US governments have agreed to accelerate hypersonic technology under the new AUKUS Hypersonic Flight Test and Experimentation (HyFliTE) Project Arrangement. The trilateral partnership is pursuing a new level of collaboration to facilitate faster development, testing and evaluation of hypersonic vehicles and technologies. These could include long-range, strike missiles capable of being launched from land, sea, or air.According to the UK Ministry of Defence, this work seeks to accelerate the partners battle-winning capabilities, bolster security and defend against evolving international threats. Existing research, including test flights of hypersonic defense vehicles, will be incorporated into the arrangement. This will reportedly allow AUKUS to develop at a pace that no one nation could do alone. While it has not been confirmed whether additive manufacturing will play a role, the UK and US actively leverage 3D printing to bolster their defense capabilities. BAE Systems is 3D printing key components of the UKs Tempest next-generation fighter jet. Elsewhere, the US Department of Defense has funded the development of 3D printed solid rocket motors and hypersonic ramjet engines. This landmark arrangement with our US and Australian partners demonstrates the commitment of AUKUS partners to staying at the forefront of battle-winning defence technology, commented UK Defence Secretary, John Healey MP. By combining our expertise and resources with those of our closest allies, we are accelerating the development of crucial hypersonic capabilities.Healey added that advancing hypersonic technology is vital to giving the UK the edge over adversaries on the battlefield while maintaining peace and stability in an increasingly complex and dangerous world.John Healey MP. Photo via Lauren Hurley/No. 10 Downing Street.AUKUS accelerates hypersonic technologyThe UK expects HyFliTE to generate valuable procurement opportunities for UK suppliers, create high-skilled jobs and support economic growth. The arrangement will also unlock deeper collaboration across the three countries industrial bases, creating stronger supply chains by removing barriers in acquisition systems.AUKUS has announced that it will conduct up to six flight test campaigns by 2028 under the new arrangement, which has a total funding pool of US$252 million. These are expected to provide robust experimentation to accelerate the development of hypersonic concepts and critical technologies. The agreement will allow the UK, US and Australia to capitalize on their collective resources, testing facilities, and technical expertise. It follows the announcement earlier this year that the UK had launched its Hypersonic Technologies and Capability Development Framework (HTCDF).Headed by the MODs Team Hypersonics (UK), this initiative features over 90 organizations, ranging from universities to global weapons manufacturers. The suppliers, which span the AUKUS nations and European allies, can bid for up to 1 billion worth of projects. These seek to accelerate the development of the UKs first advanced hypersonic missiles, set to be built by 2030. The HTCDF was used to source industry support for the new AUKUS arrangement.Nearly half of the HTCDF partners are small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), most of which are UK-based. This enables the MOD to exploit UK talent, support local industries, and build a strong domestic supply chain. Several leading suppliers have experience using 3D printing for defense and aerospace applications, including BAE Systems, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, and Skyrora. Therefore, additive manufacturing could be key in developing the UKs new hypersonic technologies.Digital render of a hypersonic missile. Image via the Ministry of Defence.3D printing hypersonic weaponsThe US has been particularly active in developing 3D printed hypersonic technologies. In May 2024, the DoD awarded aerospace firm Aerojet Rocketdyne a $22 million contract to produce a 3D printed hypersonic propulsion system prototype. The L3Harris Technologies subsidiary is using the funds to develop the prototype for the DoDs Growing Additive Manufacturing Maturity for Airbreathing Hypersonics (GAMMA-H) challenge. The GAMMA-H initiative has a $106.7 million budget and forms part of the Pentagons efforts to identify and develop new production methods for hypersonic weapons. It seeks to establish additive manufacturing processes that meet modern hypersonic airbreathing systems performance and environmental requirements.Another company awarded a GAMMA-H contract is additive manufacturing service provider Sintavia. This agreement, signed in June 2024, will see the firm validate the quality and operational processes needed to design and 3D print hypersonic propulsion components.Last year, the DoD collaborated with Lockheed Martin, metal 3D printer manufacturer Velo3D and aerospace part inspection company Vibrant to assess 3D printed hypersonic ramjet engines. The team manufactured and tested critical components to determine whether additive manufacturing can efficiently and reliably produce certified mission-ready propulsion systems.Elsewhere, Lockheed Martin recently announced that it is 3D printing key components of its new Mako hypersonic missile. Metal additive manufactring is being used to produce the jet-fired missiles guidance section and fins, unlocking substantial time and cost savings. According to Lockheed, the 3D printed guidance section is produced ten times faster and at 1/10th the cost of conventional manufacturing techniques.A report from The Telegraph indicated that the new hypersonic missiles could be produced in the UK, marking a significant departure from the companys usual US-centered approach. It has been suggested that the AUKUS alliance would enable this technology-sharing initiative. All the news from Formnext 2024.Who are the leaders in additive manufacturing? • Lockheed Martin Opens New 16,000-square-foot Additive Manufacturing Facility in Texas
    3dprintingindustry.com
US Defense firm Lockheed Martin has opened a new 16,000-square-foot additive manufacturing facility. It will be located at the companys Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) site in Grand Prairie, Texas, which produces the precision-guided M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).The new location includes large-format laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) 3D printers from Nikon SLM Solutions, reportedly some of the largest multi-laser systems in Texas. The facility also features heat treatment and inspection equipment to support the rapid production and deployment of metal 3D printed parts.By expanding additive manufacturing in one of its existing machining hubs, Lockheed Martin hopes to support its customers immediate and future product needs and drive the growth of 3D printing in aerospace and defense. Additive manufacturing reportedly allows the company to increase capacity and agility with its supply chain partners, creating a more robust and localized US industrial base.Additionally, the new facility supports the companys 1LMX digital transformation initiative. Announced in 2022, 1LMX sees Lockheed Martin leverage digital technologies, including AI and process automation, to optimize production and supply chain operations in response to global security threats. We continue to invest in AM technology to provide value for our customers in a way that empowers our engineers to innovate and rapidly integrate new product designs and capabilities to the production floor, commented Tom Carrubba, vice president of production operations at Lockheed Martin MFC. This allows us to create affordable and modular designs that can simplify both high and low-volume production processes.Nikon SLM Solutions 3D printers at Lockheed Martins additive manufacturing facility. Photo via Lockheed Martin.Lockheed Martin expands 3D printing capabilitiesThrough 1LMX, Lockheed Martin plans to establish an integrated digital thread throughout its product lifecycle to meet stringent customer requirements. According to Hector Sandoval, a Lockheed Martin fellow, the company is implementing 3D printing in the early stages of product design as a technical risk reduction tool.Sandoval highlighted additional advantages of additive manufacturing, including improved product performance and lower development and lead times. The 3D printers at the new facility are reportedly being used to produce intricate near-finished parts with lightweight structures. This reduces post-processing operations, cutting lead times and materials waste in the process.Additive manufacturing also allows Lockheed Martin to fabricate parts that cannot be produced using conventional manufacturing techniques. One example includes a hydraulic manifold traditionally machined from a large aluminum block. The design freedom afforded by additive manufacturing allowed the firm to unlock more complex geometries. This translated to more direct and better-flowing pathways between hydraulic connections, improving performance and saving weight.Lockheed Martin fellow Brian Kaplun stated that 3D printing allows Lockheed Martin to rapidly iterate and manufacture all of our products, resulting in savings and design freedom for all of our customers. He added, AM lives in the digital world and this allows us to support our customers in a far more nimble and responsive fashion than if we were using traditional design and manufacturing methods.Lockheed Martins 3D printed manifold (right) compared to the conventionally manufactured counterpart (left). Image via Lockheed Martin.Additive manufacturing at Lockheed MartinAdditive manufacturing is nothing new at Lockheed Martin. In 2022, the missile manufacturer joined then-President Joe Bidens AM Forward program. The voluntary agreement, which includes the likes of GE Aviation, Honeywell, Raytheon and Siemens Energy, seeks to promote 3D printing adoption to secure domestic supply chains and revitalize US manufacturing.Through the agreement, Lockheed Martin committed to conducting additive manufacturing research, advancing 3D printing development standards, and supporting workforce development and college programs.Building on the Forward AM initiative, Lockheed Martin and 3D printing service provider Sintavia partnered to expand research into metal additive manufacturing. The collaboration explored technology opportunities and identified where 3D printing offers value as an alternative to castings and forgings to enhance supply chain resilience.Earlier this year, Lockheed Martin announced it is 3D printing key components for its new Mako hypersonic missile. Metal additive manufacturing is being used to produce the jet-fired missiles guidance section and fins, reportedly unlocking substantial time and cost savings.According to Lockheed Martin, the 3D printed components are produced 10 times faster than conventional methods and at just 1/10th of the cost. Work on Mako began in 2017. The missile is now at readiness level six plus, meaning it is ready for production. Lockheed says Mako is fast and it is ready now.Elsewhere, the company has leveraged additive manufacturing to 3D print F-35 simulator cockpits, hypersonic ramjet engines, and GMLRS components. For the latter, Lockheed leveraged a model-based engineering approach to redesign a GMLRS antenna assembly test unit with fewer parts. This reportedly enabled cost savings and reduced production times by months.Looking ahead, the firm acknowledged that it has identified significant AM opportunities for its existing production programs. It may replace conventional manufacturing with 3D printing to save costs and time, fabricate large-scale structures, consolidate parts, and further secure supply chains to gain advantages over near-peer threats. An additively produced Mako guidance section under inspection. Photo via Lockheed Martin.3D printing missiles in the USLockheed Martins additive manufacturing expansion reflects a broader trend of adoption in North America to bolster the supply of critical defense components. The United States Department of Defense (DoD) has invested significant capital in 3D printing to restock US inventories and support Ukraine and Israels ongoing war efforts. The Pentagons annual budget requests for missiles, munitions procurement, and related research and development, increased from $9 billion in 2015 to $30.6 billion in 2024.To meet this demand, Italian rocket and missile manufacturer Avio recently expanded the production of missile solid rocket motors (SRMs). The company produces 3D printed missile propulsion systems and possesses Velo3D Sapphire 3D printers. It currently fabricates between 200 and 300 rockets annually at its Colleferro facility. Expansion efforts will reportedly increase this capacity threefold in the next 4-5 years. This move follows news in July that Avio partnered with Raytheon Technologies (RTX) to build a US industrial base for critical SRMs. The Virginia-based missile submitted 1,441 3D printing-related international patent family (IFP) applications between 2001 and 2020, second only to General Electric (GE).Elsewhere, it was announced in September 2024 that rocket engine manufacturer Ursa Major will receive $12.5 million from the US Navy and the Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) to scale SRM production. Ursa Major will use the funding to mature the Lynx manufacturing process, which it uses to 3D print solid rocket motor components. This follows the announcement earlier this year that the company is 3D printing the Navys Mk 104 dual rocket motor, which powers the SM-2, SM-3, and SM-6 missiles. The company hopes to alleviate the DoDs procurement challenges by accelerating the production of key missile components on American soil. All the news from Formnext 2024.Who are the leaders in additive manufacturing? Hello!! I found this forum and thought would be decent place to get some feedback. I work in Unreal Engine, Blender only. So heres what I finished up 2 days ago:Ice VFX practiceI see that this months new challenge is a winter spell - so I suppose I will have to make something new for that I also have a few questions as I am quite new to this whole thing:If You checked my video, You could see that I have barely any idea what I am doing or how to present my workWhat are good practices in setting up a scene to display the VFX I have done- especially isolated effects without any background. What should I pay attention to, how to keep neutral background and present the very effect to the fullest? What do You think about my ice effect? I would prefer harsh critique over pats on the back in every aspect of it. Be rough and be true - I want to improve. What would You omit? What would You add? Why are those ribbons looking like sh*t?I look forward to participating in this community! I am going to let myself cook now!V

Whether major repairs, structural issues, or significant cosmetic improvements are needed on the property, the right buyer is out there. Here are some tips on how you can sell your damaged home quickly.Market to the Right AudienceNot all buyers are willing to tackle the challenges of buying a property that needs repairs, but quite a few would welcome such an opportunity. Professional home buyers like the New England Home Buyers will look for a property to renovate and sell for profit. DIY enthusiasts would jump at this opportunity to make a house into their dream home. In contrast, first-time and budget buyers will view this damaged house as an excellent avenue into homeownership.A great listing emphasizing your property as a fixer-upper or an ideal blank canvas for customization will attract buyers. Detailing the propertys potential value after repairs and as much as possible about the current state helps capture the interest of the right buyers. Include photographs or descriptions of the damage and the houses strong points, as these will appeal to the right buyers.Price It RightPrice is one of the sensitive areas of real estate and an important area in selling. Pricing can be even more critical when selling a house with some visible damage. Typically, a buyer would want repair costs off the house list price. An excellent way to price it fairly is to know the selling price of similar houses in the area that are in good shape and then factor in some estimate of repairs with downward adjustments made accordingly.Consulting a professional real estate agent or an appraiser would provide you with a better idea of what your house is worth. Setting an inflated price on a damaged house is sellers biggest mistake, as it drives away most buyers and prolongs negotiations. A thoroughly researched and reasonably priced home attracts serious buyers and allows for fast offers.Sell As-IsSelling as-is is a straightforward route when dealing with damaged property. An as-is sale shows that the buyer is willing to purchase the house in its current state without requiring the seller to make repairs or upgrades. The worst thing about selling as-is is that the final price is likely lower because buyers will factor repair costs into their offers.Honesty is essential if you are interested in selling as-is. Many states have laws requiring sellers to disclose any known defects, such as roof leaks, plumbing problems, or foundation problems. Being honest about your house will avoid misunderstandings and legal ramifications. An inspection report will help buyers further understand what theyre getting into.Highlight the PositivesEven a damaged house has unique strengths and selling points. These aspects can distinguish between a quick sale and months of waiting. Think about the characteristics that will attract potential buyers to your property. This could include living in an elite neighborhood, a large block, or some particular architecture that adds a specific character to the house. Fixer-upper buyers may be open to making repairs if they see promise in the property. If the property has a good floor plan or provides flexibility in modifications and consultation, mention them. Along with your listing description, invest in good-quality photographs or virtual tours to focus on the most lovable characteristics of your home. With good photography, a potential buyer will be more able to see beyond the damage to the workability of the house.Work with a Cash BuyerWorking with a cash buyer can be the best option if you want to sell your damaged house quickly. Theyre handy because you dont have to wait long for loan approvals; inspections and negotiation processes are shortened. Generally, they buy houses in as-is condition, sparing you the repairs and costs. The time it takes to close the deal will reduce when selling to a cash buyer, as the deal often goes through in just under a week. However, research potential buyers and check their reputations to get a great deal. See if reviews, testimonials, and past evidence of similar successful transactions exist. Getting several cash offers will help you know your propertys value and avoid underpricing it.EndnoteSelling a house that has been damaged does not have to be a long or arduous process. With sensible pricing, target marketing, and approaching the deal without excessively exaggerating issues, you can tap motivated buyers to close a deal soon. Whether you decide to sell as-is, focus on the homes strengths, or work with a cash buyer, these strategies will help you turn your damaged property into an opportunity for you and the buyer.Leave a comment

A proposed revision to the NAAB 2020 Conditions for Accreditation has drawn pushback from AIA New York (AIANY) and the New York Coalition of Black Architects, the New York Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NYCOBA-NOMA). The criticism from AIANY and NYCOBA-NOMA was outlined in a publicly shared letter dated November 25, 2024. The letter was signed by Greg Switzer, AIANY 2024 president; and Allison Lane, NYCOBA-NOMA president. The main concern shared by AIANY and NYCOBA-NOMA is the potential removal of Section 5.5 from the NAAB 2020 Conditions for Accreditation. Section 5.5 pertains to Supportive Environment/Social Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. For AIANY and NYCOBA-NOMA, Section 5.5s removal is an affront to their shared Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The removal of Section 5.5 is one of two revisions NAAB floated on its website in a Call for Comment that opened on November 1, and closed on November 30. The first point by NAAB asked members to address changes in the legal landscape surrounding institutions consideration of race and utilization of programs focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion across campus, including changes resulting from the U.S. Supreme Courts decision on race-conscious admissions and laws, regulations, and guidance of various federal and state agencies. The second point by NAAB asked members if they think its right to lessen the administrative burden on programs by shortening the list of documents that must be provided to the public. Concerns from AIANY and NYCOBA-NOMA were in relation to point number one.NAABs proposed removal of these critical requirements reduces DEI to the lowest legal threshold, undermining our greater efforts to create a profession that serves and reflects the communities we design for, AIANY and NYCOBA-NOMA said in a shared statement in response to NAABs actions. AIANY and NYCOBA-NOMA continued: We understand that the legal environments in some states, including Texas and Florida, are now hostile even to the language that expresses the values of equity and inclusion our community embraces. However, we look to NAAB to find creative ways to lead on this, rather than take the lowest common denominator approach that effectively nullifies the work we have collectively sought to enshrine through the 2020 changes and more focused engagement on equity over the last few years. These principles are fundamental to the integrity and ethical responsibilities of our profession, and the removal of such language for the sake of legal compliance in some states sacrifices too much. We urge you to consider the implications of this decision. In defense of the proposed revision, NAAB president Steve Schreiber told AN: As noted in the public notice to programs and other stakeholders, the revisions to the Conditions are being proposed in order to address changes in the legal landscape surrounding institutions consideration of race and utilization of programs focused on diversity equity and inclusion across campus, including changes resulting from the U.S. Supreme Courts decision on race-conscious admissions and the laws, regulations and guidance of various federal and state agencies. Schreiber continued: These changes place institutions and their NAAB-accredited programs in a challenging position with respect to their compliance with the current Conditions for Accreditation. NAAB has worked closely with national level consultants with expertise in this area of law to develop the proposal which we believe supports programs and remains faithful to NAABs values and those of our accredited programs. Now that the commentary period is over, a NAAB spokesperson told AN that there is no specific date when the Conditions could go into effect, if adopted by the Board. The proposed revisions arrived in the midst of ongoing anti-DEI legislation across the country. Diana Budds reported on what these anti-DEI measures mean for architecture educators and students for AN in October. These updates also came not long after AN reported on ongoing budgetary and administrative changes at NAAB that stand to have significant impacts for AIA, AIAS, ACSA, and NCARB. These proposals, which include the possibility for NAAB to be funded directly by accredited schools, were met with stiff pushback from AIA, ACSA, and NCARB.

Attending COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, as a representative of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) was truly an honor and a powerful testament to the global influence and collaborative impact of our profession. The AIA, with nearly 100,000 members across more than 100 countries, has long been at the forefront of addressing critical global challenges. Our involvement in organizations such as the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), USGBC, Architecture 2030, ICC, and other AEC bodies reflects the growing footprint of our work in shaping the future of the built environment. At COP29, the AIA delegation was highly effective: We spoke about a variety of key issues that are shaping the future of our profession and the planet. Alongside my colleagues Kimberly Dowdell, Lakisha Woods, Vicky Schneider, Derek Washam, and AIA members in attendance, we made significant contributions to conversations about carbon reduction, circularity, resilient infrastructure, and affordable housing, and the role of architecture in climate adaptation more broadly.Though our team was smaller than in previous years by the numbers, this year marked our highest level of engagement at COP to date, with the AIA securing more speaking opportunities than ever before. These sessions underscored the critical role of architects in global adaptation efforts and emphasized the power of design to address some of the most pressing issues of our time. The Task At HandCOP29 revealed deep challenges in global climate negotiations, particularly in relation to financing climate projects in the Global South. Despite the hope for $1.3 trillion in annual climate funding, negotiators ultimately fell short, agreeing to a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) of $300 billion per year by 2035.This is a stark reminder of the difficulty in achieving global consensus toward mobilizing the resources necessary to address the needs of vulnerable communities around the world. Furthermore, despite the global commitment of limiting temperature rise to 1.5-degree Celsius, it was evident that no country is currently on track to meet the emission reduction targets set at COP25 in Paris, putting the most vulnerable nations at increasing risk of devastating climate impacts. That said, there were positive developments at COP29, particularly around the themes of adaptation, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and resilience. The overall acknowledgment that sustainability and resilience must go hand in hand as two sides of the same coin was a significant step forward. Climate adaptation, particularly building resilient communities, emerged as a central focus of the conference. We cannot reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the long run if we are constantly rebuilding after disasters. In 2023, over 114 million people were displaced by natural and manmade disasters around the world, while damage to communities exceeded $236 billion, including the 28 disasters in the U.S. that each exceeded a total of $92 billion in damage. The recognition that these two goalsmitigation (GHG reduction) and adaptation (resilient design)are inseparable is a critical turning point in the global conversation. Its clear that the design profession, especially architecture, must play a central role in shaping communities that are not only sustainable but also resilient in the face of climate change.Another encouraging development was the increased emphasis on indigenous knowledge and practices. The inclusion of indigenous leadership in the negotiations and the call for incorporating their time-tested, regenerative practices into global climate strategies reflects a broader shift toward more holistic, inclusive solutions. This commitment to protecting the most vulnerable populations and empowering the Global South was a key focus of the Sharm-El-Sheik Adaptation Agenda, which seeks to provide resilient communities for over 3 billion people worldwide. Despite the setbacks in securing full funding for these initiatives, the visibility and influence of the Global South was higher than ever before, demonstrating the growing recognition of their needs and leadership in the global climate dialogue.Looking AheadAs the AIA continues to expand its influence around the world, we are building stronger relationships with politicians, member organizations, NGOs, and UN agencies focused on infrastructure and housing. We met U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm; leadership from FEMA, NOAA, and other agencies; state leaders such as Governor of Washington Jay Inslee and Washington State Senator Joe Nguyen; as well as representatives from WHO, UN-HABITAT; and fellow architects from around the world that hold key positions, like Yoko Alander from Estonia, Minister of Climate. These meetings have laid the groundwork for the continued success of AIA members on the global stage, providing valuable opportunities to collaborate with international leaders and stakeholders. Attending this COP reinforced our belief that the work of architects has never been more urgent. As professionals committed to improving the health, safety, and welfare of the public, we have a unique ability to bridge the gap between community needs and global financing. By translating the goals of local communities into actionable, science-backed design solutions, we can alleviate some of the greatest pinch points in the climate crisis.Looking ahead to COP30 in Brazil, we are hopeful that the necessary agreements will be reached to unlock more significant funding for climate adaptation. The next COP promises to be a critical moment for our profession, and the AIA is ready to continue leading the charge. By placing more architects at the forefront of these global negotiations, we can help unlock the resources needed to meet the pressing demands of communities both here at home and around the world. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the future of our built environment, and the planet we all share.Illya Azaroff is AIA National President Elect 2025. He was a COP29 Delegate as AIA National Board at Large Director. Azaroff is also Professor in Practice at New York City College of Technology, and Director of Resilient Design and Regenerative Planning at +LAB architect, a New York and Los Angeles office. He will assume his role as AIA National President in 2026.
