Heatherwick Studio Unveils Stunning Sustainable School Design for Universidad Ean in Bogot
In an exciting blend of vibrant culture and innovative architecture, Heatherwick Studio has unveiled the stunning visuals for a new school in Bogot, Colombia. This groundbreaking project, set to rise on Calle 72, one of the citys bustling main arteries, promises to be a visual and functional masterpiece for Universidad Eans School of Sustainable Design.Designer:Heatherwick StudioThe seven-story marvel will serve as a dynamic hub for creativity and learning, adorned with colorful, basketry-formed terraces that pay homage to Colombias rich craft traditions. Inspired by Werregue basketry, a unique weaving technique of the Wounaan indigenous community, the buildings front faade will be a captivating mosaic of crafted columns and open terraces. This design not only celebrates local heritage but also infuses modern architectural flair, making it a standout addition to Bogots skyline. The innovative columns of the building, which denote the earthy vibe of the project, are not just regular forms seen in past structures. They resemble organic stones stacked on top of each other, supporting the balconies above. The design detailing of the joint where the balcony slab meets the column is particularly fascinating, and easily noticeable from the ground. This junction appears like ripples created when a stone touches water, adding a unique and visually engaging element to the architecture. The vibrant colors of the columns are certainly eye-catching, ensuring the building stands out in the urban landscape.Eliot Postma, group leader and partner at Heatherwick Studio, explained that creativity is intrinsic to the city of Bogot and evident everywhere. He expressed the studios desire for students to feel proud of their campus even before entering the building, envisioning a public square that would provide passers-by with a welcoming communal oasis amidst the hard urban surroundings.Heatherwick Studios design goes beyond aesthetics; it aims to create a central gathering space for the Universidad Ean campus. The new building will complement existing heritage structures, introducing a rare and much-needed public space in the heart of the city. The design team is also pioneering the use of innovative faade materials to withstand Bogots intense sunlight, ensuring the buildings resilience and longevity.Colombia, celebrated as the worlds second most biodiverse country, positions Bogot as a leader in sustainable development. Universidad Eans ambitious vision includes integrating elements of the surrounding cloud forest into the building, embodying the countrys natural beauty. Heatherwick Studios biophilic design will feature local plant species on the terraces, seamlessly merging nature with urban life and aligning with Bogots commitment to the C40 Urban Nature Declaration. The buildings design is a testament to Colombias weaving traditions, with columns adorned in colorful, curved lines supporting the circular terraces above. This weaving texture reflects the artistry of local practices, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.Heatherwick Studios first project in South America is set to break ground in 2025. This landmark building not only stands as a beacon of sustainable design but also celebrates Colombias vibrant cultural and natural heritage, promising to be a source of pride and inspiration for students and citizens alike. The post Heatherwick Studio Unveils Stunning Sustainable School Design for Universidad Ean in Bogot first appeared on Yanko Design.

    Heres to Apples little ones
MacworldSometimes it feels like the big tech companies have lost the script about how to make things that people really want.Take Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence may very well end up being a boon for Apples platforms. Certainly, anything that improves Siri is going to be a welcome addition. Still, theres a fair amount of evidence that no one wants this stuff. For example, CNN reports that, brands should avoid this popular term. Its turning off customers That term is not what I thought of, which was mouth feel. Turns out its AI. If you dont believe me, then maybe youll believe the Taco Bell Distinguished Professor of Hospitality Business Management at Washington State University:We looked at vacuum cleaners, TVs, consumer services, health services, said Dogan Gursoy, one of the studys authors and the Taco Bell Distinguished Professor of hospitality business management at Washington State University, in an interview with CNN.And you thought I made that up.In every single case, the intention to buy or use the product or service was significantly lower whenever we mentioned AI in the product description.Surveys of buying intentions are often not really a good indicator of what people end up buying, but it does seem like few real humans are clamoring for AI. In fact, a lot of todays tech moonshots seem to be missing the mark. The Vision Pro moonshot has so far been more of a moonwalk, if you will. (Can you? I can kinda of do it a little depending on what shoes Im wearing but sorry, thats not the point.) While a remarkable feat of engineering, its price makes it not an option for most people and even among those who can afford one, integrating it into your life currently is a bit of a crapshoot. Some swear by it, others largely leave it in the box. The Vision Pro is certainly going to evolve as Apple still reportedly has plans for a cheaper version that will spur more adoption and, consequently, more experiences on the device. But its not there yet.The Vision Pro made a big splash. but were years away from knowing what kind of impact it will have. The Vision Pro made a big splash. but were years away from knowing what kind of impact it will have.FoundryThe Vision Pro made a big splash. but were years away from knowing what kind of impact it will have.FoundryFoundryAn Apple moonshot that never was is the long-rumored Apple car. After years of development and reorganizations, the company finally canceled the project earlier this year.Even the top-of-the-line iPhones dont excite the way they used to. Thats more the natural evolution of products, though. Theyre still great phones, but every year the cameras get better, the widgets get more widgety, and the Pro phones get the dullest possible colors imaginable. (The rumored iPhone Air, however, could bring some excitement back to the lineup.)For my money, Apples real heroes arent the big, splashy ones that get all the headlines. Theyre the little ones. And, possibly to Tim Cooks chagrin, the cheap ones. The Mac miniRemember when the Mac mini was the device for switchers? I hate to tell you, but that was almost 20 years ago. They make the Mac mini for everyone now. After initial success, Apple almost forgot it made a Mac mini, neglecting to update it for four years in the mid-2010s (to be fair, Apple was neglecting most of the Mac lineup at the time). Now the company appears about to refresh the design of the little Mac that could, making it even smaller and, dare I say, the most powerful Mac mini ever. True story. The current Mac mini starts at $599, $100 more than the original version Steve Jobs introduced in 2005, and I wouldnt be surprised to see that inch up with a new smaller and even more adorable form factor. But, itll still be the cheapest Mac money can buy, and it gets the job done. The 10th-gen iPadThe 10th generation iPad starts at just $349, a price so low itll make you forget it comes from the company whose products famously cost too much. This is a remarkable amount of device for the price. While other computer manufacturers make cheap laptops in this price range, they arehow do I put this politely?the hottest of all the garbage. Plastic frames with slow processors and loaded with junkware. Apples not going to ship something like that, so it offers a device that can do email, web browsing, play some games and let you watch your stories, all in the same easy-to-use way as your phone. (Justtry not to multitask.)The iPhone SEThe high end of the iPhone line sells incredibly well these days considering the outrage that ensued seven years ago when Apple was rumored to be introducing a thousand-dollar phone. Now people drop $999 and up on an iPhone without even thinking about it.But Apple also sells an iPhone that starts at less than half that. Sure, the current SE is a bit long in the tooth, but a rumored refresh is coming in the spring and will reported even be able to handle Apple Intelligence (assuming anyone wants that). The iPhone SE line isnt refreshed often enough for my tastes but when it is you cant get better bang for your iPhone buck. The iPhone Se is due for a refresh and it could come next spring. The iPhone Se is due for a refresh and it could come next spring.Willis Lai/IDGThe iPhone Se is due for a refresh and it could come next spring.Willis Lai/IDGWillis Lai/IDGAirPodsAirPods are in that category of product that are both great for users and great for Apple. Remember wearables? That was going to be the big new thing 10 years ago when Apple was widely chastised for being behind on it (if Apple had a nickel for every time it was behind on something itd finally be a rich company). Between AirPods and the Watch, Apple now owns the wearables category, which is why no one talks about it anymore. If I were to pick one device that transformed my personal computing experience over the last 10 years, it would probably be AirPods. Theyre always in my pocket (I finally have a use for that little coin pocket on my jeans) and, sure, sometimes we disagree on which device I should be listening to, but with a cordless audio experience like AirPods, who misses the headphone jack? (I know, I know. The Verge.)Apple WatchA flop. Thats what they called it. Before it even came out and then after it came out. Theres probably someone still out there calling it a flop, but now theyre everywhere. Starting at just $249, the Watch has evolved into an amazing fitness and health device, as well as a great way for adults and kids to leave the smartphone at home.(If this is starting to seem like an ad, remember that I started by talking about Apple products I felt werent delivering. Also, Tim Cook would probably rather you didnt buy Apples cheapest products.)Sometimes you need a moonshot to make a splash (that might seem like mixing metaphors but they have found water on the Moon). So Apple cant just stop trying to make big things. But sometimes its the little things that do a better job of getting you where you need to go.

Survey: Apple Vision Pro fails to ignite business interest
More than half a year since its launch, Apples Vision Pro has attracted only muted interest from businesses. The augmented reality headset holds greater appeal to large firms, however, as well as in particular industry sectors.Thats according to a recent International Data Corporation (IDC) survey report, which polled 402 US-based IT managers and employees with responsibility for purchasing AR/VR devices. The survey, conducted in June this year, showed that 35% of the repondents were very interested or somewhat interested in the device. The level of interest from businesses to date can be described as mediocre, according to Lewis Ward, senior research analyst at IDC. I think Apple has a lot to do on both a software and hardware front before the Vision Pro will become a must have device, even at a pilot level, at the typical US business, Ward said. The Vision Pro is a new device category for Apple and a work in progress in many ways.If rumors are to believed, Apple is already working on a cheaper version of the headset aimed at consumers, though this is likely to be at least a year away from release, with a proper follow-up Vision Pro device taking even longer.Meaningful software improvements may arrive in the interim, Ward said. This could make the headset more attractive to business users. As part of the VisionOS 2.0 preview release at WWDC this summer, Apple, which has talked up enterprise adoption of the Vision Pro in recent months, announced new developer tools that aim to increase the headsets utility for certain business use cases. It has also added enterprise-friendly features such as support for mobile device management software since the headset launched to US customers in February.Vision Pro appeals to finance and healthcare orgsThere were indications that the Vision Pro resonates more with certain types and sizes of business, according to the IDC survey.Large organizations (over 2,500 employees) showed the highest levels of interest in the device, for example, with 42% very or somewhat interested. This is likely due to the availability of more resources to try out new technologies such as the Vision Pro, said Ward, alongisde a wider set of potential use cases in comparison with smaller and more focused organizations. The two industry sectors that displayed the highest levels of interest were healthcare and social assistance (54%), and finance and insurance (52%). A separate survey report from March of this year by electronic health record provider Tebra also highlighted the positive perceptions of the Vision Pro among healthcare professionals.Ward suggested that organizations in these sectors see potential for the device to solve well-defined problems for certain employees or customers, and may have developed custom software that makes use of the Vision Pros strengths.Manufacturing and retail organizations showed lower interest levels comparatively, below 30%. This is also an interesting and, in some ways, counterintuitive finding, because these are two verticals that have been discussed as being decent fits for Vision Pro, said Ward. The IDC survey also indicated that Apples entrance into the market has had a moderately positive effect on business attitudes towards the use of AR/VR in the workplace more generally.

From Kamalas kicks to Tims baseball caps: Heres a breakdown of candidates fashion this election
With Election Day approaching, candidates are courting voters with everything theyve got: targeted ads, texts, taunts, and stump speeches. As a fashion historian, I think an overlooked aspect of electioneering is clothing, which is a silent, powerful way for candidates to tell the American public who they are.Its an act as old as power itself.Clothes, from the Kings mantle downwards, are emblematic, wrote Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle in Sartor Resartus, a seminal text in fashion studies.Tim Walz, Kamala Harris, JD Vance, and Donald Trump have all taken a page from that 1834 publication. Each wields an emblem in an effort to appeal to votersand hint at how theyll lead. The peoples crownWhats more American than a baseball cap? When Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, dons one on the campaign trail, hes doing more than covering up a thinning head of hair.To the bane of many churchgoers and office managers, baseball caps have moved beyond the ballpark to become a ubiquitous symbol for an American dude. Its completely egalitarian, surmised a brand guru at New Era, the official baseball cap supplier of Major League Baseball. Its the peoples crown. The baseball cap is born of functionality. Shaded eyes can see better. In the 1880s, ballplayers chose among styles ranging from bellman-inspired, stout-brimmed pillboxes to something newsboys might wear. Consumers choices pushed manufacturers such as Spalding to settle on the domed design used today.I think Walz wears the hats to tell voters, Hey, Im just like you.He has a cap for every occasion. The former high school coach wears a mesh-sided, truckers hat to host a fishing competition. He sports a camouflaged number when talking to fellow hunters. He changes to an NFL Minnesota Vikings version when eating corn dogs with journalists, and another one featuring Goldy Gopherthe mascot of the University of Minnesotawhen hes embracing piglets at the state fair.Smooth movesWhether shes dancing to the beat of a drum line or flipping burgers, presidential candidate Kamala Harris can usually be seen wearing a pair of classic Chuck Taylor All-Stars.Marquis Mills Converse designed the sneaker at his Massachusetts-based, rubber shoe company in 1917 in an attempt to appeal to athletes playing basketball, a relatively new sport that was booming in popularity. The shoes diagonal-tread soles prevented players from slipping on the basketball courts that were appearing on college campuses and in cities across the country.Today, you cant overstate the cultural clout of Chuck Taylor All-Stars.Fashion historians say the shoes democratic originsat one point, it commanded more than 70% of the basketball shoe marketare part of its continued appeal. The companys archivist attributes its success to its utilitarian simplicity. But in the 1970s, the ascendant Adidas Superstar, which were lighter with protective shell toes, became the favorite of basketball players. No matter. California skateboarders fell in love with the All-Starss soles, which allowed for extra grip on their decks. So its somewhat fitting that a politician from California made the shoe a part of her signature style. The low-cut model that Harris wears was introduced for a nonsports market in the 1950s, and shes raved about their practicality and versatility.I run through airports in my Converse sneakers, she told The Cut, an online fashion publication, in 2017. I have a whole collection . . . a black leather pair, a white pair, I have the kind that dont lace, the kind that do lace. She wore the shoes on the cover of Vogue magazine in 2021, and theyve been a constant presence as she runs for the top job.Beyond the comfort the sneakers offer for a candidate whos often on her feet, I think they send a subtler message that hearken back to their origins: ready to move, ready to pivot, ready to win.Imitation is flatteryA red tie is nothing new. For centuries, military leaders and their armies used red neckwear to project power and aggression. Chinese imperial warriors wore red bandannas. To match the color of the emperor Trajans cape, Roman soldiers sported red kerchiefs.Former President Trump has worn a red tie since the early 1980s, when he was mainly known as a ruthless real estate mogul. As president, he doubled down on Republican Red.Though long associated with dominance and fervor, red only became the color of the GOP within the past several decades, after television stations assigned the party the color to convey state-by-state election results. As Oscar Wilde wrote, Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and Trumps followers cribbed his sartorial style. You can count Vance among them. The Republican vice presidential candidates adoption of the red tie is the cherry on top of his transformation from tech bro to MAGA acolyte. As menswear expert Derek Guy has written, Vance underwent a glow-up on his way to becoming the vice presidential nominee. Gone were the off-the-rack, gray suit jackets paired with open-neck, button-down collar shirts and nice jeans. In their place, the uniform of his new boss: navy blue suits, worn with the more formal, spread collarsand yes, shiny, red ties.Guy sees Vances makeover as a sartorial mea culpa, a way for him to walk back his previous criticisms and prove his loyalty to Trump.Vances suits are better fitting that Trumps, and his ties knotted a tad more loose. But the message is the same as it has been for millenia: Im the guy in the room who runs this army.Well, as long as Trump isnt around.Orange crushTrump blames the orange hue of his skin on energy-efficient light bulbs, but theres more to it than that.Likened by the New York Times to Warhols shock of white hair or Big Birds scarlet plumage, Trumps faux tan has been a culturally embedded representation of him long before he entered politics. The look has been picked apart by beauty editors, shaded by cartoonists, and relentlessly ridiculed by his critics. And yet, he glows on. Why?Though sun worshipping has been around since time immemorial, tanned skin is a 20th-century cultural phenomenon. The trend is often attributed to French couturier Coco Chanel, who told Vogue in 1929, A golden tan is the index of chic. More likely, tanned skin was popularized by a boom in outdoor leisure activities such as sailing, tennis, and golf that became the purview of the rich and famous.Trumps tan plays to his public image as a wealthy power broker. Sociologists studying why people are motivated to use artificial tanning found that, Tanned white skin may connote that its possessor is a healthy, relatively affluent, sociable, physically fit, and attractive person. To get it, sunseekers turned to science. The first tanning salon opened in 1978. By 2004, there were 50,000 establishments servicing 28 million patrons.Sunless tannersthe generally agreed-upon source of Trumps huehad been around since the Chanel days. Initially, they were a form of makeup. But by the 1970s, all big beauty brands offered chemical versions that tinted the actual skin. Soon, magazine editors raced to instruct on prepping the skin and applying the product for an even application, a problem that has occasionally plagued Trump. For Trump, the self-tanners ability to convey youth and vigor takes on even greater importance than it has in the past, since the former presidents age has become fodder for critics.
