WWW.BUSINESSINSIDER.COMExplosive experts: The Las Vegas blast could have been worseExperts told BI the explosives detonated in an apparent attack outside a Trump hotel didn't appear sophisticated. One explosives expert said the incident, where the driver was an active-duty Army service member, appeared "poorly executed."Authorities said the explosives were "not what we would expect from an individual with this type of military experience."Explosive experts told Business Insider the damage from the materials detonated inside a Tesla Cybertruck in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas would likely have been worse if the items used had been more sophisticated. The explosive-laden Cybertruck, which authorities say carried gasoline tanks, camping fuel, and large firework mortars, injured at least seven people. The driver, an active-duty Army service member named Matthew Alan Livelsberger, shot himself moments before the explosives detonated on Wednesday, authorities said.Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to social media in the wake of the incident to praise the Cybertruck's design and suggest it helped limit the damage of the explosion.Nick Glumac, a mechanical science and engineering professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, told BI that"It would be very difficult to get the types of fuels here to make into a large scale destruction kind of event," Glumac said.Glumac said similar improvised explosive device blasts look very different from what occurred on January 1. He also pointed to the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, when Army veteran Timothy McVeigh detonated an explosive-laden rental truck that killed 168 people and reduced a third of the federal building to rubble."That was very carefully planned. They knew what they were doing," Glumac said about the Oklahoma City Bombing, adding that the Cybertruck explosion on January 1, by contrast, appeared "very improvised."'The level of sophistication is not what we would expect from an individual with this type of military experience'Car and truck bombs were a key feature of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, tanks can be used as rolling car bombs.Officials spoke about the explosive materials used in the incident during a Thursday press conference."The level of sophistication is not what we would expect from an individual with this type of military experience,"Ali Rangwala, a fire protection engineering professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, said that the driver may have miscalculated the explosion, and it might not have been released instantaneously."Some of the explosives might not have triggered on time systematically," Rangwala said."The only way to create an instantaneous energy release, as in the case of a bomb, is for all of the energetic material to ignite in micro- or milli-seconds," Jim Wesevich, a global service line leader of forensics at safety and security firm Jensen Hughes, told BI in written commentary.A military official told BI that Livelsberger "wasn't a bomb maker." But his military occupational specialty (MOS) within the 10th Special Forces Group was 18Z, making him a special forces operations sergeant, which the Army says, "trains and maintains proficiency in all major duties associated with Special Forces."Cooper said it was too early to know if there was "sophisticated connectivity" to the components or to "give any determination" as to how the explosion was initiated. Officials said they discovered consumer fireworks, mortars, aerial shells, fuel enhancers, and explosive targets that Cooper said could be purchased at "any sporting goods store."Experts say a vehicle's design may shape the trajectory of a blastElon Musk, in a social media post Wednesday, called the Cybertruck the "worst possible choice for a car bomb, as its stainless steel armor will contain the blast better than any other commercial vehicle."Kevin McMahill, sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, said the Cybertruck's design helped limit the explosion."The fact that this was a Cybertruck really limited the damage that occurred inside of the valet because it had most of the blast go up and through the truck and out," McMahill said in a briefing.Rangwala said the damage may have been partly limited because a Cybertruck's roof, which includes a large glass pane, would clear pressure from inside the vehicle early in the explosion. The pressure from an explosion would be felt on all sides equally if it wasn't relieved by going upward through the roof, he said.Glumac and Brian Meacham, an engineer and director of risk and regulatory consulting at Crux Consulting LLC who spoke to BI over email, said that they would have expected similar scenarios if the incident took place in a traditional pickup truck.Michael Villahermosa, a US Army commander with a background in explosive ordnance disposal, said on X that photos of the items used in the blast suggest the explosives were "poorly constructed and poorly thought out."As he said on X, "People are using the Las Vegas bombing to show the quality of the Cybertruck," when, in his view, "it shows the quality of the explosive device that was used."Staff writer Ryan Pickrell contributed to this report.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 169 Просмотры

METRO.CO.UKWhy Sociable Soccer is more enjoyable than EA Sports FC Readers FeatureSociable Soccer 25 the spirit of Sensi Soccer lives on (Tower Studios)A reader reminisces over his childhood playing Sensible World Of Soccer on the Amiga and how Sociable Soccer has become the modern equivalent.Damn, I loved Sensible World Of Soccer as a kid! I played it every spare hour I had. This started back in 1994, when I was 14, living in a hellhole called Speke in the south of Liverpool. I took my beloved Everton (at the time) to 10 Champions League and Premier League victories. I was a master. On Boxing Day, I would go to my cousins and lay all opponents to waste. I was a master. I wish the Amiga could have kept count of all the hours I spent on that game. Must have been close to a thousand hours, surely. When Sensible World Of Soccer was re-released on the Xbox 360 in December 2007, I was hooked all over again. However, the gaming climate had changed considerably since the Amiga days and my tastes had moved to first person games like Portal, Half-Life 2, music games like Guitar Hero, Lumines on my PSP, and the Japanese role-players Eternal Sonata and kami. With so many options, my attentions were distracted.10 years later in 2017, Jon Hare and his team at Tower Studios released Sociable Soccer on early access for Steam. I was chuffed. I made a bootcamp partition in my Mac to be able to play it. The Ultimate Team style progression mechanic was enjoyable, the graphics and gameplay felt like a satisfactory evolution of the Amiga graphics. Jon was able to add more of his sense of humour to the players, with the extra detail that modern PCs afford. Those banana shots felt as good as ever to pull off. Ultimately, I wanted the game to be available on my PlayStation 4, so I could proudly display the platinum trophy upon completion. On 24th April 2018, I realised I was becoming a Red and officially declared myself as so that day. For the benefit of non-gamers, this will come as a shock to a lot of football fans who think you should stick to the same team till you die.The genius Jurgen Klopp and Mo Salah were enough for me to change away from the mediocrity of the Toffees. When I got my Steam Deck on February 25th, 2022, I was very pleased to see that Tower Studio had released a full version of Sociable Soccer. This incorporated a league table of all participants, with the ability to contribute to the league position of your favourite team.Another enjoyable aspect was Club Clash, where for 24 hours you would battle it with the same football club to build up kudos for your team. If you win, it goes towards your clubs points in the Clan league table. It felt great working my way through this as a Liverpool fan. There was also a feature called winning streak where you could win players from your own club if you defeat all comers, which was nice to build up your team with actual LFC players.Tower Studios released Sociable Soccer 24 in 2023, gearing towards yearly updates. Not a big change to the game, with new players added, kits and stats updated. This version was released for the Nintendo Switch earlier this year. It was a great joy to be able to play this on my Switch. I pre-ordered the PlayStation 5 version at the same time via Argos but was told there would be delays on this version.I received a message from Argos in the last week or so that my PlayStation 5 copy was on its way. PlayStation 5 owners would receive the latest yearly update, Sociable Soccer 25. Again, more of a kit and statistical update, but I would say that the goalkeepers had definitely improved. Not as many easy goals with this version. The main problem with the PlayStation 5 version is its tendency to crash at random points in the game. Sometimes youre in the middle of a match and itll crash, sometimes on the pre-kick-off screens. I havent played it without it crashing. No sign of a fix yet but I have contacted Tower Studios social media and email without response.More TrendingIt is Christmas, so Im giving them some leeway. Despite this wee setback, I am hopeful that Jon and Tower Studios will continue to build on what they have made so far. Sociable Soccer is a good alternative to EA Sports FC, for those who prefer a more arcade style interpretation of football. For a great price too. If youre a football fan, give this gem a go.By reader geohero Sociable Soccer 25 spirit of 94 (Tower Studios)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. GIZMODO.COMCristin Milioti Knows Sofia Falcone Is an Iconic Batman Villain in The PenguinThe moment that Sofia Falcone walks into that fateful family dinner wearing that yellow dress in The Penguins fourth episode, Centanni, actress Cristin Milioti solidified the character as one of the best Batman villains ever. Her canary in the coal mine moment is one of the shows best scenes, and was crafted in a collaboration between Milioti, Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc, and director Helen Shaver.By then wed seen the events that led the mob heiress to be scapegoated by her father for the murders at the hands of the Hangman and her trauma at Arkham because of him; she was only freed of his sins after his death in The Batman. But even then, her freedom came with more bad juju, no thanks to Oz, as she quickly lost her brother and their drug empire plans in the present day. In Centanni, she was facing her family continuing to gaslight her by sending her off to Italy in an attempt to take her power like so many others before her. In an interview with IndieWire, the actress shared how much of a team effort it was to create her dream Batman villain role with LeFranc. Pretty much as soon as I signed on. I had an hours-long phone call with Lauren where she walked me through everything, and then I got the first four scripts in, Milioti said. I had time to call her and talk to her and really sit with them and study them, and she sort of walked me through the last four in terms of what happens, the big events there, but so I got them pretty soon after I signed on.From the start Milioti was game for anything. Im such a huge Batman fan, its lifelong dream of mine to be a Batman villain and to get to really show her entire story. For that to come from a womans brainyou can just like sense it, you can feel it, she said. DC Studios The yellow dress launched many a Reddit thread on where to find it; in fact, it was created by costume designer Helen Huang especially for the moment Sofia steps into her power. I had 10,000 fittings for that dress, she said. We were in constant conversation with Helen about what would be the most free flowing and let you see this body languagethats the first time you see her breathe really, and experience joy, and experience lightness and yet we wanted it to show all the scars, and then we also knew it was going with this gas mask eventually, so I also wanted to do something with her eyes where you could see it through the viewfinder of the gas mask.Milioti described Sofias entrance in the scene as showing off hernew war paint, and signaling that theres been a shift in her. To combine all those things was so exciting. And also knowing we were building this Batman villain, like when do you get to do that? DC Studios Milioti hopes shell get to return to the role as much as we all do, since there infinite possibilities on where Sofia can go next.Obviously I would want to see her get out of Arkham. Thats like number one. I dont want her in there. So I want to see her get out there, and then exact revenge, she said. Maybe now she would be even more of a loose cannon, because before it was pretty focused on him and gaining power, but depending on what happens to her in there, it could be an even larger target. I would love to explore that. The Penguin is streaming on Max. Want more io9 news? This is a housing project along the old Tokaido road. Tokaido Road is one of the most important Five Routes connecting Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto and Osaka, of the Edo period in Japan. Old townscapes remain along this historical road. The exterior continues with the old Tokaido's wood-covered texture. There is a lot of traffic on the Tokaido side, but rather than blocking the outside world, the wooden panels at different angles are intended to reflect and drown out outside sounds. The orientation of the panels was arranged using a parametric design, and the angles were adjusted so that they changed little by little. Each panel was adjusted so that a large flow would be created when the entire panel was put together.Save this picture!A courtyard was created so that the living space revolves around the courtyard.
