15 Best Early Access Games of 2024
[cap-drop]J[/cap-drop]ust because a game isnt quite fully baked yet doesnt mean it isnt worth playing or capable of rivaling feature-complete games. Through the years, weve seen a number of early access titles filled with tons of content and polished to such a degree that puts other full games to shame. Baldurs Gate 3immediately comes to mind. It offered well over 40 hours of compelling content in its early access state before its award-winning full launch in 2023. This list comprises games operating with that same kind of spirit; one where potential is strikingly obvious right out of the gate. As well see, a couple of these titles show ample signs of being future GOTY winners.1. Path of Exile 2If theres one game on this list that couldve fooled us into thinking it was already a complete package, its Path of Exile 2. Its not an exaggeration to say that Path of Exile 2stands as the best action RPGs available right now, and its still early days with the full launch a year away. Between the intricate build customization, varied macabre environments, and story oozing with rich lore, were looking forward to just how much more jam-packed with content Path of Exile 2will get with its full launch sometime in the coming year.2. Hades 2The first sequel from the beloved indie dev, Supergiant, is already amazing and its still only in early access. Hades 2takes the brilliant roguelike structure of the first game and adds a whole lot of magic (literally) and added polish to the mix. The sequel expands upon the well-written Greek pantheon featured in the prequel, introducing a new protagonist in Melinoe, the sister of Hades 1s hero. Hades 2 aims to outdo Hades in every respect, which is already evident by the sheer number of new locations and the plethora of content present in its early access state.3. Wild WoodsThis four-player co-op indie game tasks players to defend a wagon going through some dangerous woods. Sounds rather simple, right? Well, it shares some very creative elements from Kunitsu-Gami, another game that has you gathering resources during daytime to prepare for night combat. The four-player cooperation elements serve as a good foundation for added maps and challenges leading up to its full release. Though, since Wild Woods just became available for early access on December 9th, odds are that it has a ways to go until its complete launch.4. PalworldWith well over eight million units sold and record-breaking Steam player counts, Pocket Pairs Palworldis doing well for itself despite the looming Nintendo lawsuit. Palworlddrew in a substantial number of players disillusioned by Pokemons latest offerings. The base building and gun-toting Pal battles are great fun, and with the Feybreak update coming December 23rd, players have a lot more content to look forward to.5. EnshroudedEnshroudedmay be yet another survival crafting game, but it executes each of its components well above most of the competition. The combat is rather satisfying with its action RPG mechanics and parry-laden fights. If youre struggling to make ends meet in this hostile open world, there are 15 other players who can help (or hinder) you in your journey. Enshrouded is notable for meeting a majority of its roadmap goals as it inches ever closer to its full 2025 release.6. Manor LordsWhat really sets Manor Lordsapart from other city builder strategy games is its unwavering attention to medieval historical accuracy. Theres a laudable amount of detail regarding town expansion and resource management with historical systems like burgage plot structuring all in play. These intricate town management systems raise the stakes of the real-time strategy battles tenfold, adding a level of immersion and urgency to the genre. Were looking forward to seeing how this one-man passion project turns out with its official launch.7. AstrometicaThis survival crafting game just released in early access on December 10th and Im already invested in what it offers. Unlike other endless space exploration games (like Starfield), the variety of ships within Astrometica are actually used to explore various anomalies and secrets. Theres even asteroid belts to navigate your ship through. Youll need to settle down in a base to survive the cold hostility of space, though, and Astrometica delivers with its compelling tech tree and outpost crafting.8. The Rogue Prince of PersiaMade by the studio that put out the acclaimed Dead CellsDLCs, this roguelite Prince of Persiatitle is in a quite the polished state half a year after its early access debut. As the title suggests, The Rogue Prince of Persia features procedurally generated levels filled with the kind of acrobatic platforming and action that the genre has been known for. Players who enjoyed Prince of Persia: The Lost Crownor classic 2D platforming titles will find a lot to love with The Rogue Prince of Persia.9. Rogue CommandRogue Command is another roguelike game on this list, yet in the form of a classic RTS title. I dont know if Ive seen a classic RTS in this roguelike format before. Its an intriguing gameplay conceit to have entirely different builds and units with every run, butRogue Commanddoes a good job keeping runs approachable and fun thanks to convenience features like a 10% time slow-down. Despite its early access status, theres quite a lot of content here already, including 100s of units and over 20 map types.10. Finnish Cottage SimulatorConsider me surprised to see Finnish Cottage Sim achieving an overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam with thousands of reviews as of its November 15th early access launch. The charming graphics and quant atmosphere help it stand out among the more budget-minded simulator games. But its really the variety of quests and dynamic 6-player multiplayer that have hooked players into this fun and relaxing take on cottage living.11. DunjungleIf you like The Rogue Prince of Persia, Dunjungleis another early access title worth checking out. This fast-paced action platformer roguelite distinguishes itself with customizable equipment and classes to exploit enemy weaknesses with. The gameplay loop is more frenetic and punishing than something like The Rogue Prince of Persia with its lack of checkpoints, but thankfully theres plenty of equipment and progress that stays with you between runs. Dunjungleis one of the most instantly gratifying early access games on the list thanks to its poppy drop-in, drop-out gameplay loop.12. CataclismoStrategy players with a love for Legos need to try out Cataclismo. The games combination of real time strategy battles with brick-built base building forms a rather unique experience. Structures are effortless to construct thanks to the clear piece-by-piece process of building them. Seriously, if you like stacking bricks together, Cataclismo satisfies with a bevy of architectural pieces to get creative with and RTS combat to test your structures against.13. AskaAskaisnt just another survival game; besides careful resource management and fights against wildlife and scavengers, the game asks you to manage your own tribe. This management wrinkle really adds a lot to the game. Take the unique way you add villagers to your village; you essentially craft villagers into existence out of resources, how cool is that? This fresh perspective on the survival genre further personalizes the village management aspect of the game, making survival that much more interesting and engaging.14. New Arc LineThis early access game is for the classic role-playing fans. New Arc Lineis set in a dystopian magi-tech setting where you begin as a penny-less immigrant aboard a steam ship to the new world. Between the range of NPC companions that you can recruit and build relationships with and the blend of mechanical and magic-based combat styles, New Arc Linehas been an early access favorite for those who love choice-heavy RPGs.15. ATLYSSATLYSSis one of those comfy and casual online RPGs that hits the sweet spot for those pining for some old-school nostalgia. The open world is rewarding to explore and quest through and the colorful PS2-stylized graphics really make it stand out. Players will have no trouble finding others to adventure with, considering the high concurrent player counts, though ATLYSSis unique in that none of the content is locked to multiplayer and can be experienced solo.Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Everything You Need to Know
Even as we wait for something, anything, on Nintendos next console, the Switch still has a fair number of new releases in 2025. Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is one of them, arriving on January 16th for the console at $59.99 and serving as an HD port of the 2010 platformer for the Nintendo Wii. With strong critical acclaim back in the day and over 6.5 million copies sold, theres plenty of reason to jump in. Check out 15 things you should know about it before pre-ordering.OriginsWith Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze available for the Nintendo Switch, it makes sense to bring Donkey Kong Country Returns over and give it the HD treatment. However, the latter was significant for many other reasons at launch. It was the first Donkey Kong Country title after the SNES trilogy, launching 14 years later for the Nintendo Wii. Also, instead of Rare, which handled the previous entries, Metroid Prime developer Retro Studios is at the helm for the first time in the franchise.Developed by Forever EntertainmentHowever, the Nintendo Switch version isnt handled by Retro Studios but Forever Entertainment, as reported by Bankier. The studio (which published the remakes for Front Mission 1 and 2) also worked Tropical Freeze for the Switch and did a pretty good job, though well get to the visual changes in Donkey Kong Country Returns HD shortly.GameplayIf you played the SNES titles, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD will feel familiar. As a side-scrolling platformer, players can control Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong (though only the former is playable solo). You can jump on and roll through enemies, pound on the ground to progress or reveal items, ride on mine carts, swing from vines, collect bananas and Puzzle Pieces to unlock gallery items. Animals like Rambi and Squawks also return to lend a hand.New Mechanics to the SeriesWhile characters in the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy could go down in one hit, Donkey Kong Country Returns features a health bar. The trade-off is you cant switch to Diddy Kong when playing solo. However, he can jump on Donkey Kongs back with his jetpack allowing you to make longer jumps. The other change is a new silhouette presentation for some levels, which not only looks sleek but also houses new challenges. For example, if you line up certain background objects in Sunset Shore, itll rain bananas and coins. Some platforms in Foggy Fumes may also not be immediately visible, leading to some second-guessing. On top of all this, theres a new vehicle, the Rocket Barrel, which offers its treacherous stages to navigate.Local PlayOne of the appeals of Donkey Kong Country is playing with a friend and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD supports this. A second player can control Diddy Kong, and yes, you can still hop on Donkey Kongs back to enhance his jumps (and cut down on your own work). Once a characters health is depleted, you can bring them back with DK Barrels scattered throughout the stages.Super KongIf things are too rough and you die multiple times in a level, Super Kong can be called in to save the day and complete a level (which also works with bosses). The downside is not receiving bananas, coins, balloons granting extra lives, and collectibles. You also wont see the locations for the latter, making 100 percent completion (or even finishing the final stage) impossible. Nevertheless, for those who get stuck and want to get on with the story, its an option.K-StagesWhen you collect the KONG letters scattered in every level, youll unlock a K-Stage. These are challenging locations in each world, and completing them grants a Rare Orb. If you beat the game and have all eight Rare Orbs, you can unlock the final world and then Mirror Mode.Extra LevelsThis isnt the first time Donkey Kong Country Returns has been ported to other platforms. Monster Games brought it to the Nintendo 3DS and added new features like New Mode and eight brand new levels, encompassed in the new Cloud world. Collecting all Rare Orbs is necessary to access the Cloud Gateway to enter this world and subsequently the last level.Mirror ModeAfter finishing the final level, theres good news you can do it all over again in Mirror Mode. Available only in solo play, it flips every level in the game, removes Diddy Kong, and only gives you one heart, which means one hit, and youre dead. You also cant use items, further increasing the difficulty.Time AttackIf youre the speed-running type, then Time Attack mode may be worth checking out. Available after completing a stage, your goal is to reach the end in the fastest time possible. There are Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals to earn, but you can also try for Shiny Golds, whose completion time is hidden. You dont get anything for all the medals, making this mode completely optional, but its a great way to test your knowledge of the levels.Original Mode and New ModeAnother new feature from the 3DS port, which carries over to the Nintendo Switch version, is New Mode. Its effectively Easy mode, granting more hearts, increasing held items to nine, and offering other protective measures. You can survive two crashes from mine carts and rocket barrels with Crash Guard, while Green Balloon will save you once if you fall into the abyss. Original Mode is still available for those who want to experience the game with the original difficulty, so dont worry.PlaytimeThe main story will last 11.5 hours on average per HowLongToBeat. This jumps to 18 hours when factoring in side content, but completionists will require 31 hours on average to finish everything. However, this is for the Wii version and doesnt account for the extra levels from the 3DS port. Regardless, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD promises a lengthy platforming experience if youre dedicated enough.Visually Enhanced (?)Donkey Kong Country Returns HD sports a higher resolution than the Wii release, but there are some noticeable visual changes, which arent all completely positive. Certain items like Hearts and KONG letters dont glow as brightly; the sunset in some levels is absent; and the colors in many instances arent the same. Your mileage may vary on how much all this matters, but if youre a stickler for a 1:1 HD port in visuals, this isnt it (though they still look pretty good).JoyCon FeaturesLocal play is entirely possible with a pair of JoyCons, with each player using one to control a character. And while the entire game is playable with buttons, the JoyCons can be shaken to smack the ground, thus unveiling hidden objectives. This carries over from the Wii version, and while unnecessary, its good to see it carry over to the Switch.File Size on Nintendo SwitchWhile Tropical Freeze required 6.7 GB of installation space on the Switch, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is surprisingly bigger. Youll need 8.3 GB of space instead its not much, but still a noticeable leap.

Arlos monthly subscriptions are going up again
Arlo has once again increased the monthly subscription pricing for its smart home cameras Arlo Secure cloud storage plan. The company now charges $9.99 per month (up from $7.99) to store a single cameras recordings and $19.99 a month (up from $17.99) for unlimited cameras. And instead of calling the cheaper plan Arlo Secure, both are now named Secure Plus.At $9.99 per month, the cheapest Secure plan is now more than three times the monthly $2.99 Arlo once charged to store video for a single camera in the cloud. The company bumped that to $4.99 in early 2023, then to $7.99 last year. With annual billing, the single-camera plan still works out to $7.99 per month, while the unlimited-camera one is effectively $17.99 per month when you pay for a year upfront.Arlos annual pricing is a little cheaper per-month. Screenshot: Arlo websiteThis latest round of price increases comes after Arlo announced a new set of AI-powered features in September. The features include letting users name specific people or vehicles the camera sees and get notifications about them, or to train its cameras to detect and notify them of events like a sprinkler turning on or garage door opening. The company has also doubled how many days of recordings it will store, from 30 to 60 days.Arlo has offered at least some users the ability to keep their old rate by switching to an annual plan, according to a screenshot posted to the Arlo subreddit. Users can still get free storage by using Arlo Base Stations and SmartHub devices that are compatible with their cameras. However, going that route also means missing out on certain subscription-only features that make smart cameras appealing, such as package detection.

What to expect at CES 2025
Its time for the biggest tech show of the year. CES 2025 officially kicks off next week, with most of the industrys biggest names gathering in Las Vegas to announce new products and demonstrate some of the most exciting tech they have coming throughout the year.CES is traditionally a show about TVs, laptops, and smart home tech. But its increasingly become a big show for cars, wearables and health tech, and a whole lot more. This year, expect one abbreviation to show up a lot across every single category: AI. The AI hype cycle is rolling straight into 2025, and theres certain to be AI popping up on the next generation of TVs and cars, like it or not.The show officially starts on Tuesday, January 7th, but you can expect announcements to start coming out on Sunday and Monday ahead of the show floor opening and a day of press conferences. Here are the big beats were expecting to see at the show.TVsLGs wireless TV tech is expanding to its QNED models this year. Image: LGIm expecting two prevailing trends for TVs at CES 2025: screens will keep getting bigger, and AI features are going to be everywhere to the point of being inescapable. Consumers have been gravitating toward larger TVs over the last several years (were talking 75 inches and up), so get ready to see some giant OLED and Mini LED models from Samsung, LG, TCL, Hisense, and others. And you can bet that practically every TV maker will be dialing the AI-powered tricks up to 11 this year. Theyve already done so with automatic picture and audio settings. But considering how popular ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and other AI assistants have become, its only a matter of time (maybe just days) before chatbots find their way to your next TV.Expect the buzziest news to come from Samsung and LG. But Im very curious to see what Panasonic has in store after a successful return to the US TV market last year. Chris WelchSmart homeCES 2025 will be the year of the smart home gadget. Im anticipating an avalanche of new product announcements from companies like Aqara, Nanoleaf, Tapo, Reolink, SwitchBot, Shelly, Lutron, Lifx, Flic, and Cync, all of whom are exhibiting this year. I hope to see some real innovation products that take the smart home to the next level especially now that theres the foundation of Matter, a unified connectivity standard they can leverage. One area I expect to see a lot of new products with exciting features is smart locks. With the new Aliro standard launching next year, this space is ripe for disruption. Easier, more seamless ways to deal with locks and security is a universal need that will also help bring the benefits of home automation to more people. We may see more screens than we really want toAnother trend I anticipate well see on the show floor is new ways to control your smart home. Following the success of Amazons Echo Hub, I think well see a slew of new touchscreen interfaces that connect to your smart home devices and offer a way for anyone in the home to control lights, locks, shades, and more without their phone or voice. We may see more screens than we really want to Samsung has already teased its newscreens everywhere initiativeand is putting a touchscreen on all its appliances.Another big theme will be robotics. Robot vacuums have been innovating at warp speed over the last few years, with many now capable of almost fully autonomous operation to sweep and mop your floors. With Ecovacs, Roborock, Dreame, Narwal, and more at the show, I anticipate well see robot vacuums reach new heights. Finally, home energy management will be an overarching theme across the smart home at CES. Id expect most product announcements to have some focus on energy use and / or conservation, but more importantly, I think well see announcements around new Home Energy Management Systems platforms that will leverage AI to orchestrate the way your home uses energy to help you both conserve energy and save money. This is one of the most compelling reasons to add connectivity to your home, no matter how much fun color-changing lights are. Jennifer Pattison TuohyAutoThe Honda Zero concept from CES 2024. Image: HondaI think its safe to say that this years CES is looking like the sleepiest one yet from a transportation perspective. Most of the worlds major automakers are sitting this one out, and most of the transportation-themed announcements have, well, already been announced in some capacity.Just look at the Afeela, Sony and Hondas joint EV project: were expecting some updates about preorders and the customer experience, but this is the third show that were seeing the forthcoming vehicle make an appearance. That doesnt mean there wont still be some exciting news. Honda is getting ready to share more details about its Honda Zero lineup, teasing two new vehicles that are sure to fill our quota for sleek, aerodynamic sedans with cool, cyberpunk-inspired lighting motifs.BMW is the other major manufacturer with big CES plans this year. The German automaker plans on showing off the Neue Klasse platform that its been teasing for a couple of years, including its new panoramic iDrive display and a brand-new operating system. To be sure, with the threat of tariffs and reduced incentives hovering over the EV market, its not surprising to see fewer plug-in vehicles on display at the show. But a number of commercial vehicle manufacturers, including John Deere and Oshkosh, are planning on making big announcements that should whet your appetite for battery-powered machines. Andrew J. HawkinsLaptopsThe Windows laptop space has seen a flurry of exciting changes over the past year, with Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm all releasing excellent new mobile CPUs across 2024. Well likely see a plethora of Intel Arrow Lake chips come to laptops and a range of new AMD offerings at the show, but the real story of CES is likely to be all about graphics: the entire PC space feels like its about to blow up with the anticipated launch of next-gen Nvidia GPUs.Were going to keep hearing a whole lot of fluff about AI PCsThis years show will offer an opening volley of gaming and content creation laptops built around Nvidias new 50-series discrete GPUs and Im hoping it means a sizable leap in performance over the 40 series instead of just an iterative upgrade with higher costs. Or maybe you wont even need a discrete GPU in your laptop at all for above-average gaming performance, as leaks have indicated AMD will have a beefy new Strix Halo processor with integrated graphics rivaling what Nvidias RTX 4060 GPU can do. As much as I love top-of-the-line, cutting-edge GPUs (like ones ending in the number 90), I also dig the idea of better performance trickling down to thinner and lighter machines.Graphics may be the big story, but one other things for certain: were going to keep hearing a whole lot of fluff about AI PCs, and its likely to continue not amounting to much outside of humdrum auto-generated work emails and problematic chatbots. Sure, live translations are nifty, but the most interesting AI stuff coming to laptops at CES 2025 is likely to be whatever Nvidia has in store for its next-gen DLSS. Antonio G. Di BenedettoGamingA leaked image appears to show Lenovos SteamOS-powered handheld. Image: Evan Blass (X)Its going to be a big year for PC gaming at CES this time around. One of the biggest announcements of CES will be next-gen GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD. Were expecting Nvidia to unveil its RTX 50-series graphics cards at a special GeForce keynote on January 7th. Nvidias next-gen GPUs have been heavily leaked and are tipped to include a new neural rendering feature and advanced DLSS technology. Nvidia might be ready to unveil as many as five new cards at CES, including the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5070, and even an RTX 5090D for China.AMD is also likely to announce its new RDNA 4 GPUs at CES, too. Rumors suggest a Radeon RX 9070 XT will appear at the show, but its more likely to compete with Nvidias current RTX 4080 than the upcoming RTX 5080. The RX 9070 XT could also launch alongside FSR 4, AMDs latest upscaling technology thats expected to be fully AI-powered to compete more closely with Nvidias DLSS.It wouldnt be a CES without new gaming laptops and the latest CPUs from Intel and AMD. Rumors suggest we could be about to see Intels Arrow Lake-H series of laptop processors paired with RTX 50-series GPUs in a variety of laptops at CES. If that pairing is accurate, then were bound to see a mountain of gaming laptops along with it.If youve been waiting to upgrade your monitor to OLED, then expect to see a lot more options during CES, too. Asus, Samsung, and MSI have all announced the first 27-inch 4K OLED 240Hz monitors, MSI has a 500Hz 1440p OLED monitor, and ASRock even has 520Hz IPS monitors for those that still want to play at 1080p. With new GPUs on the horizon, its a great time to pair them with the next generation of OLED technology. Finally, if youre interested in PC gaming but dont want to spend big on a dedicated rig or gaming laptop, handhelds could be about to get even more appealing. It looks like Lenovo is about to launch its own SteamOS handheld, and it has invited both Valve and Microsoft to a special gaming handheld event at CES. Microsofts VP of Next Generation will be in attendance, just as it looks like Windows will have to battle SteamOS for PC gaming on handhelds. Tom WarrenSmartphonesCES isnt a phone show anymore, but Im going to be on the lookout for not-phones I think theyre going to be hot this year. Not-phones let you do things youd normally tap around on your phone screen to do only, well, not on your phone. Glasses with cameras, gadgets without screens, that kind of thing. It seems like were discovering that maybe Phone doesnt have to do everything under the sun. We can have other gadgets for when we dont want Phone, like a compact camera, a little e-ink tablet that runs all your favorite reading apps, or a silicone case that turns your Apple Watch into an iPod. The key thing is that they dont replace your phone wholesale; they just complement it.Oh, and there will be lots of AI, naturally. AI refrigerators, AI roller skates, AI pants, I dont know. Personally, Id like to see some AI gadgets that are genuinely useful but dont try to do too much more Meta Ray-Bans and less Humane AI Pin. I still think phones are going to remain undefeated as the AI gadgets of the future, but I also think theres room for some not-phones, too. I hope so, anyway. Allison JohnsonWearablesThe Xreal One takes a simple approach to AR by just mirroring another screen right in front of your eyes. Image: XrealIts looking like this is another year where smartwatches take a back seat to more niche wearables. Im certain well see some updated smart rings, but I think smart glasses, AR headsets, and AI wearables will dominate the show floor. Nothing quite on the scale of the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, Rabbit, or Humane. Think smaller, established companies in the space showing off whats new and gutsy startups eager to push boundaries. Either way, smart glasses and AI wearables built some real momentum in 2024, and thatll likely be reflected at CES 2025.On the health front, Im expecting to see some continuing trends from the past few years. Stuff like OTC hearing aids, remote health monitoring, and at least a few wacky concepts thatll almost certainly be vaporware. After all, its not CES unless a handful of companies claim theyve cracked the code to noninvasive blood glucose monitoring. And speaking of AI, Im definitely expecting to see more health tech companies tacking on ChatGPT-like chatbots to existing devices or services.Beauty tech and other categories geared toward women have also been gaining steam in recent years. LOrals been spearheading this movement, and Im curious to see how the category will fare this year after a lot of buzz at 2024s show. Victoria Song

What to Expect From Star Wars in 2025
With 2025 looming, Star Wars fans have a whole new years worth of content to look forward to. Unfortunately, 2025 isnt shaping up to be the franchises biggest year. With no new movies on the docket and only one live-action series confirmed for release, the pickings are looking a little slim. But thats not to say theres nothing exciting on the horizon. The release of Andor Season 2 alone is reason for Star Wars fans to celebrate like the Rebels dancing on Endor. Lets take a closer look at what is coming in 2025, and the many Star Wars projects we hope to learn more about in the next 12 months.Every Upcoming Star Wars Movie and TV ShowAndor Returns for Season 2This is the big one. The Star Wars slate may be a little sparse in 2025, but its hard to complain too much when were getting a sequel to what is widely regarded as the best Star Wars project Disney has released so far. Thats right, Andor Season 2 is finally dropping in April 2025.Season 2 chronicles the second half of this deep, introspective origin story for Diego Lunas Cassian Andor. If Season 1 was the story of how a young Cassian became radicalized and joined the fledgling Rebel Alliance, then Season 2 will show us the dangerous missions he undertook leading up to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.Fittingly, with the series moving closer to the time period of Rogue One, well see more familiar faces from that movie pop up in Season 2. Most notably, Alan Tudyk will reprise the role of K-2SO, as we learn how Cassian first met this eccentric Imperial assassin droid. Were also looking forward to seeing Ben Mendelsohn don his cape once more as Death Star project manager Director Orson Krennic.Fans can expect Season 2 to cover a lot of ground, with multiple time jumps unfolding over the course of the season and the final batch of episodes set in the days leading up to Rogue One. In other words, dont expect a Season 3. But do expect a Star Wars story that continues to explore the ordinary men and women who lit the spark of rebellion in a time of great darkness. PlayMore Star Wars: VisionsMore Andor is great, but what about the animated side of things? With The Bad Batch wrapping up in 2024, the one Star Wars animated series confirmed to return in 2025 is Star Wars: Visions. Once again, fans will be treated to an anthology of animated shorts featuring various animation studios interpreting the mythology of Star Wars through their own, unique lens.Season 3 is said to bring Visions back to its roots as an anime anthology, whereas Season 2 took more of a global approach. The studios involved in Season 3 include Cyberpunk Edgerunners Studio Trigger and Attack on Titans WIT Studio, along with David Production, Kamikaze Douga, ANIMA, Kinema Citrus Co., Polygon Pictures, Production I.G, and Project Studio Q. PlayWill There Be More Star Wars TV?However much were looking forward to more of Star Wars: Andor and Star Wars: Visions, theres no getting around the fact that 2025 is looking pretty thin on the Star Wars TV front compared to previous years. In 2024 alone we got two live-action shows in The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew and two animated series in The Bad Batch: Season 3 and Tales of the Empire. But in 2025, we only have one confirmed live-action series and one animated series, plus the final two episodes of Skeleton Crew.Is there a chance Disney has more shows planned we dont know about? Possibly, at least on the animated front. Dont forget that we only learned about the existence of Tales of the Empire a month before it dropped on Disney+ in May 2024. Its entirely possible that they could pull the same trick again in 2025, announcing another Tales of anthology series to follow up Tales of the Empire and Tales of the Jedi.PlayTheres also the question of whether Disney has any long-form Star Wars animated projects in development right now. With The Bad Batch wrapping up last year, we have to imagine that Dave Filoni and others have been hard at work crafting the next great Star Wars animated saga. We probably wont see that series release in 2025, but its possible well at least get an announcement and maybe even see some early footage. That could be one of the big announcements at Star Wars Celebration Japan in April. But on the live-action front, dont expect any big surprises in 2025. The Acolyte was officially canceled, and with The Mandalorian saga continuing on the big screen, we dont even know if The Mandalorian: Season 4 is ever happening. That just leaves Ahsoka: Season 2, and that series isnt returning until 2026 at least. The End of the High RepublicIf things are looking a little barren on the live-action Star Wars front right now, the same certainly cant be said for the publishing side of things. Fans of the Star Wars books and comics will be eating very well in 2025, particularly those following Lucasfilm Publishings High Republic saga. For the past several years, these books and comics have been exploring the triumphs and tribulations of the Jedi hundreds of years before the Star Wars movies, and it all comes to an end soon.Look for several major High Republic novels to be released in 2025, including Charles Soules The High Republic: Trials of the Jedi, Claudia Grays The High Republic: Into the Light, and Justina Irelands The High Republic: A Valiant Vow. Of these, Trials of the Jedi is the one most worth keeping an eye on, as it serves as the climax of the entire High Republic initiative. This novel will chronicle the final battle between the Jedi and the Nihil and the Nameless. Look for Trials of the Jedi to be released on June 17.Not to be outdone, Marvel Comics has quite an ambitious Star Wars lineup planned for 2025. In 2024, most of Marvels ongoing Star Wars comics were exploring the period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Now that those books have ended, Marvel is casting a wider net and branching out to multiple Star Wars eras in 2025.Kicking things off, look for Marvel to wrap up the limited series Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku in January. This series has been busy fleshing out the final major battle between the dying Empire and the New Republic two years after Return of the Jedi, and well see the climax unfold in writer Alex Segura and artist Jethro Morales and Leonard Kirks The Battle of Jakku: Last Stand. From there, Marvel is veering in two wildly different directions with its newest ongoing Star Wars comics. First, writer Marc Guggenheim and artist Madibek Musabekov are heading to the Prequel era in Star Wars: Jedi Knights. Set before the events of The Phantom Menace, the series will follow numerous members of the Jedi Order, including Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Mace Windu, and Shaak Ti. The series even focuses on Count Dooku before his defection from the Jedi Order.Star Wars: Legacy of Vader - Preview Art GalleryElsewhere, Marvel is venturing deep into the era of the Sequel Trilogy for Charles Soule and Luke Ross Star Wars: Legacy of Vader. Set in between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, the series explores Kylo Rens struggle as the newly crowned Supreme Leader of the First Order and his quest to recommit himself to the Dark Side following his battles with Rey and Luke Skywalker. Soule previously fleshed out Ben Solos Dark Side origins in 2020s Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren, so consider this a sequel of sorts. We have to assume these arent the only new Star Wars comics Marvel will be launching in 2025, as the publisher has tended to publish four or five ongoing titles at any given time. Will Doctor Aphra get another solo series? Will we see other books fleshing out the blank canvas that is the post-Return of the Jedi era? Only time will tell on that front. The Future of Star Wars GamesIf 2025 is shaping up to be a relatively quiet year on the movie and TV front, its not looking any better in terms of video game releases. In fact, there are no Star Wars games confirmed for release in 2024.About all fans have to look forward to at the moment is new DLC for Star Wars Outlaws. According to Ubisofts DLC roadmap, fans can expect a new story campaign called A Pirates Fortune to release in Spring 2025. This campaign focuses on fan-favorite pirate villain (or perhaps hes more of an anti-hero) Hondo Ohnaka as he bumps into Kay Vess. Ubisoft has yet to reveal what, if any, new Outlaws content is planned beyond A Pirates Fortune. Are there even more adventures planned for Kay and her motley crew, or do the lukewarm sales numbers spell doom for Outlaws ongoing future? Well have to wait for future announcements to learn more.PlayBeyond that, all we can do is hope that 2025 brings with it news about other upcoming Star Wars games. We know EA is developing a third game in the Star Wars Jedi series. But with there being four years between the release of 2019s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and 2023s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, its probably too much to hope the new game will actually release in 2025. At best, we might see early footage of the game and get a better idea of when in the Star Wars timeline it takes place. Were also crossing our fingers for news on the oft-delayed remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch confirmed in 2024 that the game is still in active development, despite rumors to the contrary. But what state is the game in right now, and when will we see footage of the remake in action? Hopefully, 2025 brings with it some good news on the KOTOR front. And lets not forget Quantic Dreams Star Wars: Eclipse, another title that was announced and then seemingly vanished off the face of the Earth. Will 2025 be the year Eclipse finally rears its head again, or will it go the way of so many other canceled Star Wars projects? What About the Star Wars Movies? 2025 wont deliver any new Star Wars theatrical releases, which at this point is nothing new. On the theatrical side, the franchise has been dormant since the release of The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019. But thats not to say Lucasfilm hasnt announced plenty of new Star Wars movies in recent years. Its worth looking at whats currently in the pipeline and how likely we are to get an update in 2025.The Mandalorian & GroguFirst, theres the lone Star Wars movie thats actually in production right now, The Mandalorian & Grogu. This big-screen spinoff of The Mandalorian continues the shared story of the two heroes after the events of The Mandalorian: Season 3. Co-creator Jon Favreau is directing the film, which is currently slated for release on May 22, 2026. With any luck, we should see a teaser trailer for the film at some point in 2025, possibly as early as Star Wars Celebration Japan.Dave Filonis Mando-Verse MovieNot to be outdone, Favreaus partner Dave Filoni is directing his own live-action movie, one expected to tie together characters and threads from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and other projects from that era. Dont expect much news on this movie in the foreseeable future, however, as Filoni has to focus on Ahsoka: Season 2 first.James Mangolds Star Wars MovieLogan director James Mangold is helming a movie set in the distant past of the Star Wars universe, revealing the origins of the Jedi Order and reportedly featuring a Biblical scope. Lucasfilm may announce a writer for the movie in 2025, but dont expect more updates than that. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order MovieDaisy Ridley is reprising the role of Rey Skywalker in a new movie set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Ms. Marvels Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing. Hopefully, well see some updates about the film in 2025, but its unclear where in the pipeline it currently falls.Simon Kinbergs Star Wars TrilogyX-Men producer Simon Kinberg has been tapped to oversee a new trilogy of Star Wars movies. Despite early rumors the trilogy will directly continue the Skywalker Saga, IGN was able to confirm its instead meant to focus on a new storyline. Its still early days on this project, so were not expecting to hear much about Kinbergs trilogy in 2025.Taika Waititis Star Wars MovieThor: Ragnaroks Taika Waititi is apparently still set to venture into the Star Wars universe, though its been years since weve gotten any substantive updates on this mysterious project. Will that finally change in 2025? And thats what you can expect from the Star Wars franchise in 2025. Its a relatively quiet year, but there are still some very cool projects for fans to look forward to in the new year. What Star Wars story are you most excited to experience in 2025?
