Russian war losses in Ukraine have reached new daily highs for 5 months straight: UK MOD
Russian daily losses hit another record high in December, the UK MOD said. The ministry said this marks the fifth straight month that Moscow's daily losses have climbed to new highs.Russia's worst day for losses was on December 19, when 2,200 of its troops were killed or wounded, per the MOD.December marked the fifth month in a row that Russian losses in Ukraine broke records for average daily highs, the UK's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday."The average daily Russian casualties reached a new monthly war high during December 2024," the ministry wrote in an intelligence update. "The daily average loss rate was 1,570, the fifth straight month that Russian Forces have sustained new war high average daily losses."It said Russia suffered its highest daily loss in the war on December 19, saying that 2,200 of its troops were injured or killed that day.Citing figures reported by Ukraine, the ministry said December was "likely the most costly month of the war for Russia," with a total of 48,670 dead or wounded. The ministry added that December was the sixth straight month that Russia suffered an increase in its monthly losses. It did not say if these numbers included losses taken by North Korean troops, of whom Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview on Sunday that 3,800 were killed or wounded. The British ministry has regularly said over the last year that Russia has increasingly been suffering from high losses due to its reliance on mass infantry assaults aimed at wearing down Ukraine's defenses.Ukrainian brigades, which say they are sometimes outnumbered one to five and often underequipped, have slowly yielded about 1,600 square miles of territory in 2024.But the grinding assault has come at a high cost for Russia, with the Washington-based think tank Institute for the Study of War estimating that Moscow lost about 40 troops for each square mile it seized. The UK Defense Ministry added in its Tuesday update that Russian monthly losses would likely continue to worsen as the Kremlin fights on multiple fronts, often sending infantry on foot to exhaust Ukrainian defenses. The strategy, while producing limited results, has heightened perceptions that the war hinges more than ever on either Ukraine or Russia's ability to sustain their resources on the battlefield.Questions now hang over American aid to Kyiv, with President-elect Donald Trump, who repeatedly said he wants a swift resolution to the war, set to take office on January 20.But a chief worry for both sides is also manpower. Ukraine has been struggling to replenish its ranks as the war drags on, pivoting in 2024 to a now much-criticized system of creating fresh brigades instead of reinforcing existing ones.Meanwhile, Russia has been sticking to mass recruitment by offering large bonuses to new soldiers. In December, it announced that it was pouring $126 billion, or about 32.5% of its federal budget for 2025, into defense spending. The Russian Defense Ministry did not respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

Nvidia's Jensen Huang says he hasn't received his Mar-a-Lago invite yet, but would be 'delighted' to get one
Jensen Huang says he would be "delighted" to meet with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago.The Nvidia CEO said he has yet to receive an invitation.Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have visited Trump at his Palm Beach resort.Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says he has yet to meet with President-elect Donald Trump following the latter's victory in November's presidential election.Huang was giving an interview to Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow on Tuesday when he was asked if he'd been invited to visit Mar-a-Lago, Trump's Palm Beach resort."Not yet but I would be delighted to go see him and congratulate him and do everything we can to help this administration succeed," Huang told Ludlow.A Nvidia spokesperson declined to comment on Huang's remarks. The Trump transition team did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. In November, Trump said he plans to impose an additional 10% import tariff on Chinese goods entering the US. He previously said in February that he would introduce tariffs of more than 60% on China.Huang told investors at Nvidia's earnings call in November that the chip giant will "comply with any regulation that comes along fully."China is an important market for Nvidia, making up nearly 17% of the company's total revenue in the year to the end of January 2024.Several tech billionaires, ranging from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, have already made trips to Mar-a-Lago to meet with the president-elect.Trump has enjoyed a warm reception from business leaders as he prepares to take office for the second time. The president-elect has raised at least $200 million in donations since winning the election, The New York Times reported on Saturday, citing people involved with the fundraising. At least $150 million of the funds will go toward Trump's upcoming inauguration, far outpacing the $106.8 million he received for his first inauguration in 2017. The rest of the donations will help fund Trump's political activities and future presidential library."One of the big differences between the first term, in the first term, everybody was fighting me. In this term, everybody wants to be my friend," Trump said at a news conference last month."I don't know, my personality changed or something," Trump added.

Antonia LeichtHousingBremen, GermanyArchitects: Praeger Richter ArchitektenAreaArea of this architecture projectArea:3720 mYearCompletion year of this architecture project Year: 2023 PhotographsPhotographs:Antonia Leicht More SpecsLess SpecsSave this picture!Text description provided by the architects. Cooperative Housing Project - In 2019, the KARL cooperative was awarded the site on Friedrich-Karl-Strasse through a conceptual development procedure organized by the City of Bremen. The housing project is located within the new Hulsberg Quarter close to the historical buildings of the former Bremen-Mitte Clinic. The KARL housing cooperative, consisting of 50 people in their mid-30s to early 70s and 20 children and adolescents, has implemented its vision of "solidarity in building and living" and created a highly inclusive building. By acquiring the municipal property, the cooperative committed to a long-term solidarity-based use, as specified in the conceptual development procedure. At the same time, the project actively counteracts speculation in the housing sector and ensures affordable rents, as the apartments are used by the cooperative and thus removed from the market over the long term. The rents are examined annually by the residents and adjusted according to each household's family and income situation. The elongated, four-story volume with a recessed floor is structured by two entrance areas and features an access balcony facing the courtyard, which provides a link between the apartments and the communal areas.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Mix of Apartments - The 29 units, ranging from 35 to 109 square meters, offer a variety of apartments for the diverse and transgenerational cooperative. Three different layout types can be distinguished: shared apartments (subsidized) located at the head of the building, apartments situated along the communal access balcony, and slightly separated family apartments facing the neighborhood square. Solidarity-based and flexible organization - Constructed under significant economic pressure, this housing project balances and implements collective and inclusive concepts. All communal and circulation areas of the building are barrier-free and wheelchair-friendly, with one apartment specifically designed for wheelchair access. The first floor houses an inclusive shared apartment (subsidized housing). Semi-private access balconies connect the common areas, private outdoor spaces, and living rooms and allow residents to personalize them. As an open communication zone facing the courtyard, the access balconies form a lively, social facade and are especially enjoyed by children as a communal vertical play area. Wide floor spans enable high flexibility in the floor plan configuration. A uniform, inclusive interior fitout standard allows the apartments to be swapped at a later date for instance, if life circumstances or requirements change, e.g. after children move out. Community as a fundamental principle - A significant proportion of over 25 percent of the space in the building is reserved for communal and neighborhood-oriented uses. These enable and reinforce solidarity in the residents' everyday lives. Thus, the cooperative members can use an additional 200 square meters of communal areas and an outdoor space of 1,200 square meters while consuming a comparatively small average of 30 square meters of living area per resident. In the joint planning process involving the group, the focus was on creative solutions that meet the requirements of the multi-generational housing cooperative. Despite the limited budget, it was possible to exceed standards (e.g., for accessibility) while compromising on the financing of apartments in favor of communal areas. Collectively used spaces such as the open ground floor with a daycare center and the KARL neighborhood room, flexibly usable "plus rooms" on every floor, along with the communal garden and roof terrace support community interactions.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!1) Ground floor as an open neighborhood infrastructure - The ground floor is a space for social interaction and a transition area between the building and the surrounding neighborhood. Here are also units that are rented to social organizations and associations, benefiting the new Hulsberg Quarter. The housing cooperative's 70-square-meter "KARL Room", a workshop/hobby space and a storage room (for baby strollers, etc.), is located here. In addition, there are a kindergarten and a caf as external uses that bring the neighborhood square to life. 2) "Plus rooms" for vertical communities - The multi-functional "plus rooms" on the upper floors provide space for collective use in addition to the private apartments. As functional additions to the circulation zone, the rooms are both infrastructure and social meeting points in everyday life. The programming of the "plus rooms" can be flexibly adapted to the changing requirements of the residents. The initial configuration features a large communal kitchen, which is located directly next to the roof terrace and intended for gatherings of the entire housing cooperative. There is also a guest apartment, a playroom, as well as laundry and drying rooms on all levels. 3) Communal outdoor spaces and gardens - The KARL project boasts various outdoor areas created by the cooperative to serve different functions. A playground has been realized outside the daycare center on the ground floor, directly adjacent to the vegetable garden featuring elevated flower beds and a seating area. Roofed bicycle stands and e-mobility charging stations provide practical infrastructure for the transition from the neighborhood square to the inner courtyard. The landscaped terrace on the top floor is another meeting place, suitable for communal dining, celebrating, socializing, and relaxing. The spacious communal roof garden marks the green edge of the building. From here, you can even see the Weser football stadium and St. Peter's Cathedral.Save this picture!Structural Features - Due to budget constraints, the red brick facade required by the building regulations of the new Hulsberg Quarter was implemented only on the ground floor as a 90-degree rotated "facade belt" in a herringbone pattern. This makes the facade a special feature and lends the building a distinctive identity within the city. The joints between the facing bricks echo the red color of the red plaster faade above, aligning the requirements of the project with the appearance required by the local design regulations. An exception to the binding site plan allowed for the creation of a large rooftop garden, which offers the residents an important communal outdoor space and meeting point in addition to the intensively used courtyard. Moreover, the green roof area has a positive effect on the urban climate. The building, a KfW Efficiency House 40, is constructed using a cost-efficient construction method with land-lime brick and reinforced concrete on the ground floor. A basement was dispensed with in favor of the financial viability of the many communal areas.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Bremen, GermanyLocation to be used only as a reference. Spacious, inviting, and intimate, courtyards have an integral place in the vernacular architecture across India. Beyond their climatic purposes, courtyards assume the role of a social space, a space for contemplation, and a space where something happens. Their presence in various forms, proportions, and size has been a ubiquitous feature in Indian vernacular architecture. The courtyard houselocated in Mansanpally village, 40 km away from Hyderabadis a modern twist to the local Manduva house. Designed for contemporary living, the courtyard house is a reminder of the simplicity and authenticity of vernacular architecture in creating spaces that are as functional as they are serene.Save this picture!Save this picture! The brief provided by the client envisioned the expansion of a single-bedroom farmhouse into a place where his extended family could live in the tranquil company of nature. This called for the addition of six bedrooms along with a fully functional kitchen and dining area and expansive areas for communal living. The need for privacy and socializing further required the design to provide green areas for each room, along with seamless connectivity to communal open spaces. This requirement of the brief was resolved by reinterpreting the traditional 'Manduva house'.Save this picture! The courtyard, an integral part of the Manduva house, has been reinterpreted to accommodate the elements of modern rural living. By strategically detaching the four blocks around the central courtyard, as opposed to a traditional courtyard layout, the design allows natural ventilation from all directions, enhancing airflow and overall comfort. This spatial organization also prioritizes the client's need for solitude, and social interaction whilst retaining the connection with nature. To achieve a unified look, the roof has been fragmented into four smaller sections contained under a single roof. Constructed entirely in wood, without the use of metal structural members, the structure highlights the essence of rural architecturea building that harmonizes with the environment, and responds to local climatic conditions whilst relying on its use of natural materials.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! As one approaches the farmhouse through a narrow passage, set within a mango orchard, one is greeted by an inviting building with expansive semi-open verandas. The journey continues across an entrance waterbody onto an entrance veranda, offering a view into the living and dining blocks. The verandas, sheltered by the extended wooden roof, provide much-needed shelter and transition from the outdoors to the indoors.Save this picture!Large glass panels and operable wooden framed doors in the living room invite one to explore the courtyard. Brimming with greenery, the central courtyard provides a space for communal activities. A small water feature with a wooden suspended deck adds to the space's versatility and functions as a climatic regulator.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Bedrooms and other private spaces are accessed through the central courtyard. Each bedroom has been designed to open onto a rear veranda, which ensures the privacy of its residents by avoiding direct visual connection to the courtyard. This layout also offers private open seating areas for each bedroom. By recessing and positioning the bedroom doors to the side, the design further maintains the courtyard's integrity and sanctity.Save this picture! The interior follows the minimalist theme, expressing simplicity and functionality through its use of natural materials and an earthy color palette. Single leather-finish Kota stone renders the semi-open and closed spaces into a unified look, while civil walls, painted with a white micro-topping finish, add a sense of austerity befitting the rural house. Visual interest in the design is generated by cladding feature walls with brown sandstone at strategic locations. Bright pops of colors and contrast are introduced through furniture. Natural timber roofs and Spanish Terrace tile establish the connection to the site's rural context, whereas large glass openings further this connection by providing unobstructed views of nature outside. This scheme, devoid of embellishments, allows the real beauty of materials to remain exposed and celebrated, whilst ensuring that the architecture becomes a part of the natural scenery rather than standing out against it.Save this picture! The courtyard house is a dialogue between tradition and modernity, where the essence of rural architecture is celebrated through contemporary design. Every element of the design, from the central courtyard to the exposed roof, reflects a commitment to creating spaces that honor its heritage without compromising the needs of today. By tactfully combining natural materials to meet the spatial needs of a modern house, the architecture creates a home that feels both timeless and relevant, and by extension is a true embodiment of modern rural living that remains deeply connected to its roots.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officePublished on January 08, 2025Cite: "Courtyard House / 23 Degrees Design Shift" 08 Jan 2025. Insider Weighs in on Next Xbox Console's Rumored Release Window
Gamers eagerly anticipating the next-generation Xbox console now have a potential timeline, as an insider has hinted at late 2026 for the slated release window. Despite being the most powerful Xbox system to date, the current iteration has failed to meet sales expectations. This underperformance seems to stem from Microsofts shift in focus away from its flagship console, rather than any shortcomings in the hardware design itself. Instead, the company appears to be prioritizing other areas of its gaming ecosystem.
