WWW.COMPUTERWORLD.COMThese top online AI courses can help advance your careerDemand for generative AI (genAI) courses is surging, passing all other tech skills courses and spanning fields from data science to cybersecurity, project management, and marketing. Coursera, in its fourth annual Job Skills Report, says demand for genAI-trained employees has spiked by 866% over the past year leading to strong interest in online learning. Over the past two years, 12.5 million people have enrolled in Courseras AI content, according to Quentin McAndrew, global academic strategist at Coursera.Mastering AI skills is essential to stay competitive now, McAndrew said, and students are shifting from understanding genAI to applying it in their roles to save time, work smarter, and deliver measurable impact.AI and GenAI have become the most in-demand skills across all industries, she said. AI skills now appear in almost every job posting, which unlocks opportunities for higher wages and career growth for job seekers.Demand for genAI learning has exceeded that of any skill weve ever seen on Coursera, and learners are increasingly opting for role-focused content to prepare for specific jobs, said Marni Stein, Courseras chief content officer. The rush for online learning about genAI isnt restricted to Coursera. Other online learning hubs, including Udemy, OReilly and Workera, are seeing much the same thing. At Coursera, the top genAI courses in 2024 were:Google AI Essentials (Google)Generative AI for Everyone (DeepLearning.AI)Introduction to Generative AI (Google Cloud)Generative AI with Large Language Models (Amazon Web Services; DeepLearning.AI)Generative AI: Introduction and Applications (IBM)Generative AI for Executives and Business Leaders Part 1 (IBM)Introduction to Generative AI for Software Development (DeepLearning.AI)Microsoft 365 Copilot: Personal Productivity for All (Vanderbilt University)Accelerate Your Learning with ChatGPT (Deep Teaching Solutions)Greg Brown, CEO of online learning platform Udemy, echoed what Coursera officials have seen. As genAI skills become the new standard for workplace tech proficiency, we are seeing a surge in demand for skills like ChatGPT and leadership for change management, he said.Udemy research found that while nearly 90% of employees see leadership as key to their companys genAI transformation, only 48% feel confident their top execs are prepared to lead the initiatives.AI proficiency is no longer novel or nice-to-have, Brown said. It is mission-critical for organizations to future-proof their workforce and for professionals to further develop their careers. On Udemys platform, students are choosing to upskill with AI tools such as ChatGPT, MidJourney, and DALL-E. The companysTop 100 Surging Workplace Learning Skillslist ranked ChatGPT and generative AI as the second fastest-growing skill, with AI in the sixth spot.Udemy said its top business courses over the past 90 days include:Machine Learning A-Z: AI, Python & R + ChatGPT Prize [2025]Artificial Intelligence A-Z 2025: Build 7 AI + LLM & ChatGPTChatGPT: Complete ChatGPT Course For Work 2025 (Ethically)! How to use ChatGPT and Generative AI to help create contentLLM Engineering: Master AI, Large Language Models & AgentsArtificial Intelligence & ChatGPT for Cyber Security 2025Learning about genAI for productivity at Udemy has surged 859% from a year ago, with more than four million enrollments. Numerous AI certification courses, including Microsoft Azure AI Engineer Associate and Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals, have also grown significantly up 311% and 197%, respectively.Forward-thinking companies understand the power of genAI, Brown said. Integrating genAI across the workforce is like migrating your infrastructure to the cloud,.According to a new study by tech learning platform OReilly, AI technologies are driving the most significant shifts in technology education. Interest in almost all of the top skills is up from 2023 to 2024: Prompt Engineering grew 456%; AI Principles grew 386%; Generative AI grew 289%; Natural Language Processing grew 39%; AI grew 190%; and Machine Learning grew 9.2%.Interestingly enough, among the top topics the most significant decline was for GPT itself, which dropped by 13%. Not a huge decline but certainly a significant one, said Mike Loukides, vice president of emerging technology content at OReilly. That loss of interest in some ways dovetails with what research firm Gartner said last August that genAI was slipping into the trough of disillusionment.Loukides said developers are now prioritizing foundational AI knowledge over platform-specific skills to better navigate across various AI models such as Claude, Googles Gemini, and Llama. This years report also highlights the rapid rise of critical AI-related skills tied to LangChain and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which have rapidly gained prominence and are now comparable in usage to established AI libraries like PyTorch and Keras, he said. These advancements empower developers to build more sophisticated applications on top of AI models, marking the next frontier in AI development. The biggest AI usage increases were in prompt engineering (up 456%), AI principles (up 386%), and genAI (up 289%). Notably, GitHub Copilot content saw a 471% surge, highlighting developers growing interest in productivity-enhancing tools, according to the OReilly report. The next wave of AI development will be building agents software that can plan and execute complex actions. This year marks a pivotal transition in technology, with AI evolving from generative capabilities to a transformative force reshaping how developers approach their craft, Loukides said.Loukides said interest in learning programming languages appears to be waning, with Rust being a notable exception. If thats happening because users expect AI to handle language details, that could be a career mistake, he said. But Kian Katanforoosh, CEO Workera, an AI-driven talent management and skills assessment provider, said people arent less interested in learning programming languages Python recently surpassed JavaScript as the most popular language.Instead, theres been a decline in learning the specific syntax details of these languages, he said. What most people should focus on is understanding what a programming language enables them to do and how it works at a high level, rather than memorizing syntax, Katanforoosh said. The mindset of programming remains crucial it fosters problem-solving skills that are widely applicable. Its also important, he added, to recognize the different tiers of AI learners:AI-aware individuals, who want to understand AI concepts and their implications.AI practitioners, who are focused on leveraging AI technologies to build applications.AI builders, who develop the models or infrastructure that power AI.Each group is learning distinct skills, and tailoring education to these tiers could unlock even greater potential for AI adoption and innovation, Katanforoosh said.Along those lines, Courseras fourth annual Job Skills Report, based on insights from five million enterprise learners and more than 7,000 institutional customers, found the key skills organizations and individuals are prioritizing for 2025. They included:GenAI using AI to generate text, images, and moreArtificial neural networks building computer systems that learn like human brains doComputer vision teaching computers to see and understand imagesPyTorch (machine learning library) using this tool to build powerful AI applicationsMachine learning teaching computers to learn from dataApplied machine learning using machine learning to solve real problemsDeep learning building advanced AI systems for complex tasksSupervised learning training AI using labeled examplesReinforcement learning training AI through trial and errorMachine learning operations (MLOps) managing and deploying machine learning systems effectively.According to Courseras Stein, the top three fastest growing skills for 2025 are Prompt Engineering (Vanderbuilt University), ChatGPT Advanced Data Analysis (Vanderbilt University), and Preparing Data for Analysis with Microsoft Excel (Microsoft).0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 127 Views

APPLEINSIDER.COMApple and Amazon get $600 million UK price fixing lawsuit dismissedA lawsuit claiming that Apple and Amazon colluded to fix the price of Apple products and reduce competition, has been rejected by a UK tribunal.Apple and Amazon have been accused of price-fixingIn one of three similar cases accusing Apple and Amazon of price fixing, the UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal has ruled that the case cannot continue to trial. The decision to dismiss the case is reportedly an unusual one as the tribunal more often allows claimants to pursue cases further. In this situation, the mass lawsuit Britain's equivalent of a class-action one was brought by consumer law academic and professor of law, Christine Riefa. She brought the suit on behalf of potentially 36 million British consumers who bought Apple or Beats products. WWW.SMITHSONIANMAG.COMHow Archaeologists Discovered Europe's Oldest-Known Book, Revealing Never-Before-Seen Insights Into Ancient Religion and PhilosophyOn This Day in HistoryHow Archaeologists Discovered Europes Oldest-Known Book, Revealing Never-Before-Seen Insights Into Ancient Religion and PhilosophyCharred by the flames of a funeral pyre, the Derveni Papyrus has proved to be a fascinatingand confoundingartifact The Derveni Papyrus, named for the location where it was found, is believed to date to between 340 and 320 B.C.E. Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsOn January 15, 1962, archaeologists in Greece were excavating the tomb of a Macedonian nobleman near Thessaloniki when they uncovered something incredible. Amid the ashes of a funeral pyre, encased in burnt mud, was a papyrus scrollthe first to be found in mainland Greece. Dating of the document and the discovery its literary nature subsequently led UNESCO to declare it Europes oldest book. The Derveni Papyrus, named for the location where it was found, is believed to date to between 340 and 320 B.C.E. In the manuscript it copies, which was likely written near the end of the fifth century B.C.E., the author discusses religious practices related to the fate of the soul after death and delivers a treatise on a poem ascribed to Orpheus, the hero poet and musician of Greek mythology.Richard Janko, a classicist at the University of Michigan, has called the papyrus the most important new piece of evidence about Greek philosophy and religion to come to light since the Renaissance. But, he adds, It is also the hardest to understand, and all work on it is inevitably work in progress. This is largely due to the fact that the fire that preserved the papyrussaving it from the deterioration usually caused by the humidity of Greek soilalso destroyed it. A Roman mosaic of Orpheus surrounded by animals Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsThere were pieces that were completely blackened, and nobody could make out whether there were letters on them, archaeologist Polyxeni Adam-Veleni, then-director of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, which houses the papyrus, told the Associated Press in 2006.When researchers carefully peeled apart the scroll, they collected approximately 266 fragments. They ultimately pieced the fragments into 26 surviving columns of text, all with their bottom halves burned away. A relatively complete version of the text would not be published until nearly 50 years later.Scholars disagree on the potential author of the work, but the mystery author seems to have been a follower of the philosopher Anaxagoras. The books audience seems to be prospective religious initiates of Orphism, the cult that followed the teachings of Orpheus.Though many of their practices remain unknown, Orphics are believed to have been monotheistic. They abstained from eating meat and focused on purity, reflecting Anaxagoras teachings that the soul survives after death and only the pure will be saved. Orphisms parallels with Christianity make the papyrus an especially interesting window into the spiritual practices emerging in the area at the time.Philosophy of the Orphic Mysteries - The Derveni Papyrus - Myth of Orpheus and Ancient Greek ScienceWatch on In addition to the religious insights the papyrus offers, the authors interpretation of a now-lost Orphic poem reveals information about Greek philosophical thought of the era. In the treatise, the author writes that the poem, which pertains to the birth of the gods, should be taken as an allegory rather than literally. The anonymous authors argument includes references that show how several Greek philosophers understood the physical world. As technology improves and allows better reading of the manuscript, scholars continue to debate the content of the document and how the fragments should be put together in the hopes of gaining even more insight into Hellenic religion and philosophy of the time.As Janko writes, There is much at stake in attempting to solve the puzzle of this papyrus.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 72 Views

WWW.GAMESINDUSTRY.BIZMeta to lay off 5% of staff as part of "performance-based cuts"Meta to lay off 5% of staff as part of "performance-based cuts"3,600 jobs may be at risk according to reportsImage credit: Meta News by Sophie McEvoy Staff Writer Published on Jan. 15, 2025 Meta has announced that it will conduct "performance-based cuts", with 5% of its workforce facing redundancy. As reported by Bloomberg, CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained in an internal memo that the firm plans to hire new people in these roles by the end of the year."I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster," wrote Zuckerberg."We typically manage out people who aren't meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we're going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle."He added (via CNBC): "We won't manage out everyone who didn't meet expectations for the last period if we're optimistic about their future performance, and for those we do let go, we'll provide generous severance in line with what we provided with previous cuts."Meta currently has a workforce of over 72,000 as of September 2024. It's estimated that 3,600 jobs may be at risk. The cuts will only affect staff eligible for a performance review. Those affected in the US will be notified on February 10, while workers situated elsewhere will be informed at a later date.Meta previously laid off 10,000 workers and retired 5,000 open roles in March 2023. Zuckerberg attributed these cuts to improving the firm's financial health, including cancelling lower-priority projects and decreasing hiring.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 83 Views

WWW.IGN.COMStar Wars: Skeleton Crew Episode 8 ReviewThis review contains full spoilers for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Season 1, Episode 8.It may be weird to think of an episode that involves a pirate invasion, the assassination of a local government leader (who happens to be a droid), and the citizens of a suburban town being rounded up and forced to work as a celebratory victory lap, but thats exactly what the finale of Skeleton Crews debut season ends up being. Everyones season-long arcs are paid off (or at least acknowledged), the mysteries are solved, and the bad guys are thoroughly trounced. If all of that feels a little disappointing, its just because well, there wasnt much else that needed to get done. The Skeleton Crew formula, as much as there has been one (it only pulled the kids follow a clue to a planet, have an adventure there, and move on thing three times or so), is well-established at this point, and with the approachable, family-friendly stakes that the show has been going for, it wouldve been weird for this finale to go totally off the wall with subverted expectations. PlayNo, all we needed was that final victory lap, ticking off the boxes of everything this show has done well so far. The kids each get a little moment, paying off their coming-of-age journeys (Neel gets to use the big turret on top of the school that was foreshadowed in episode four, KB gets to fly the ship, Wim gets to use Jods lightsaber, and Fern gets to have a bad attitude and push her mom into doing something reckless), and we even get answers to the last two lingering mysteries: Who is the At Attin supervisor and why does Jod have Force powers? The resolution to the first question is predictable, though the yeah, duh manner in which it is waved away with is refreshing and feels consistent with the shows faith in its audience (the adults all knew the supervisor was a droid.) The reveal of Jods backstory, however, shows a clever amount of restraint. Theres not some grand mystery to why he has Force powers, no half-assed explanation that hes somehow related to Emperor Palpatine. Jod was just some kid, living in the gutter somewhere, who was found by a Jedi and learned some Force tricks from her before she was executed. Rather than make Jod evil, though, this event just taught him that the galaxy sucks and that he has to do anything he can to find the few bright spots out there even if it means killing or stealing. In fact, this episode, The Real Good Guys, is subtly a showcase for Jod in the same way that previous episodes have centered on specific kids. All we needed was that final victory lap, ticking off the boxes of everything this show has done well so far. Its probably giving the character too much credit to say hes not as bad as he seems, given the deranged glee that Jude Law exudes while repeatedly threatening Fern and her mom (he makes a face at one point that single-handedly explains why the era of Law as a romantic leading man is over), but there is palpable anguish in Laws performance when his plan starts to go off the rails. At a certain point, it becomes clear that the only way hes going to win is if he starts making good on his threats to kill these kids or their family members, and he really doesnt want to.Jods story is left somewhat unresolved, probably as a tease for a second season, but it is a smart choice that we dont waste any time watching him get arrested or apprehended. The kids dont even really care what happens to him, they just care about keeping each other safe. And so Jods left in the supervisors tower, watching his pirate friends all get killed with a sinister sneaky smirk on his face. Assuming he (and the show) come back, hell be up to something nasty, and though Law wasnt always the most engaging member of the cast, he nonetheless does feel like a key ingredient in the shows alchemy. The episode does end on kind of a weird note, though, which feels abrupt and might leave you sitting through the credits for a Marvel-style stinger that never comes. With their school destroyed in the pirate attack, Fern jokes that Wim doesnt have to take his big job placement assessment anymore (the thing he was avoiding in episode one). As the other kids leave, Wim looks up the sky in awe now free of At Attins barrier and sees New Republic spaceships flying by. He wants to have space adventures, we get it. Thats what hes wanted for the whole season. And then the episode ends, as if this was some big, concluding moment. Yes, it was nice, we all like Wim, but it was an oddly quick and unceremonious final scene for what has been (against all expectations) a really fun season of TV.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 88 Views
