• Nintendo Switch 2 has a major design flaw claim worried fans
    metro.co.uk
Should we be worried? (Nintendo)The Nintendo Switch 2 has only just been revealed, but some are already worried that one particular part of it is going to very prone to breaking. While the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal didnt confirm many specific details, one of the key takeaways was the new Joy-Cons and all their new features. The Switch 2 controllers are officially bigger in size, have mysterious new buttons, can be used as computer mice, and connect to the screen display through a protruding port instead of the original consoles rail sliders. However, the way the Joy-Cons connect to the display has sparked some concern in fan circles, even though the console isnt even out yet.As highlighted on Reddit by Salesmunn, the Switch 2 Joy-Cons lock into place through magnetic connectors which stick out from the recessed sides along the console.I really hoped the controllers would charge and communicate wirelessly, the user wrote. I can tell that this little nub on the Switch 2 will be bending and cracking immediately. For parents of young kids, RIP this controller nub.Others in the comments have expressed concern too: That was what I was thinking. And since its part of the main body, good luck replacing that.Another added: The connector looks like it wouldnt hit anything due to that being recessed. But kids are going to fiddle with it or jam controllers on, etc. And thats what will break it over time [sic].Its important to note that its unclear what the connector is made of, so it could be very sturdy and more reliable than the slide rails on the original Switch. Or it could be purposefully flexible to avoid exactly what the fans are describing. Also, there is a long history of fans deciding various consoles and controllers are unworkable, just by looking at photos or videos, and it never proves accurate. These images arent even of an actual console, just a CGI render of it.Nintendo consoles are always designed to be durable in the hands of kids, but these premature concerns might stem from the trauma around the Joy-Con drift issue on the original Switch, which caused the control sticks to move on their own without any input. This issue inflated to the point where Nintendo offered free repairs in certain countries, and it even led to a lawsuit. Although all modern joypads suffer from the issue to some degree.More TrendingIts likely Nintendo has learnt from these mistakes around Joy-Con drift with the Switch 2, but well have to see if this new connector does become a sticking point. While theres no launch date for the console yet, were set to learn more during a Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025. The console is set to be released this year (YouTube)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.ArrowMORE: Whats new in Mario Kart 9 for Nintendo Switch 2? • Tesla Batteries Burning in LA Wildfire Present an Irony About Sustainability
    gizmodo.com
California sells more electric cars than any other state, many of which in Southern California have turned into rubble during the recent Los Angeles wildfires. And while lithium-ion batteries present in EVs do not burst into flames often, when they do they produce fires that are extremely hot and take significant water to extinguish. When the fires are out, they will leave behind a lot of toxic waste to clean up. It is a new headache and presents an irony about electric carsthe very things supposed to help the environment are being burned by a wildfire started by global warming, and the batteries are leaving behind more damage to the environment. According to data from S&P Global cited by Bloomberg, there were over 431,000 Teslas in operation in the Los Angeles area as of October 2024. That does not include vehicles from other brands. EV vehicle fires can take tens of thousands of gallons of water to put out, because the lithium-ion inside the batteries can create oxygen when burning, meaning a lot more water is necessary to cool the burning pack. Tesla publishes guides for fire departments that instruct them on how to extinguish fires from its vehicles. General Motors has previously provided four-hour training sessions to first responders on how to stop stubborn fires that will not go out. Electric vehicles come with a host of unique drawbacks to consider they are often very heavy, posing problems for road infrastructure, for instance, and charging a lot of EVs can put strain on electrical utilities. These are some of the reasons why certain urban dwellers are opposed to EVs altogether, arguing that people in cities should use public transit if they really want to support a green future. They come with contradictions.Bloomberg spoke to a firefighter about how previous fires in Maui gave them a game plan to clean up batteries in Southern California: San Diego firefighter Robert Rezende, a specialist in lithium-battery hazards wholl be assisting in the cleanup effort, said protocols developed during the 2023 fires in Maui will be used in Los Angeles. But the scale of this event, and the hazards, are magnitudes larger. The state has seen other fires, but nothing this urban, with so many neighborhoods and structures where youd expect to see more electric vehicles and other energy storage systems, Rezende said. Were anticipating a pretty big lift. In Maui, the Environmental Protection Agency shipped more than 30 tons of lithium batteries from over 1,400 properties for recycling. Electric vehicle fires are very rare, with the National Transportation Safety Board finding approximately 25 fires for every 100,000 electric vehicles sold. Electric motors do not generate much heat, so fires occur most often in serious accidents when a battery is ruptured and the sensitive chemicals and elements inside become unstable, releasing heat and then creating a self-sustaining cycle to heat up uncontrollably. Of course, high heat from an external source like a wildfire can also cause the battery to heat up. Unfortunately, because electric vehicles have massive battery packs, there will now be a lot of toxic waste to remove and try to recycle. Rain could cause toxic pollutants to reach the ocean if they are not cleaned up in time.To be sure, countless studies show that the lifecycle emissions of electric vehicles will be 70% lower than gasoline or diesel, even accounting for mineral extraction or charging. Unless you lean to the more extreme end of the spectrum and think cars should be eliminated altogether, EVs are still likely better than the alternative gas options.

Located in Serra do Louro, within the Arrbida Natural Park, this house is built at the highest point of the land, where a ruin in an advanced state of disrepair previously stood. This structure was demolished, and the stones from the old masonry walls were reused to build the boundary walls, integrating the intervention into the surrounding rural context.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! To take advantage of the solar orientation and the views over the protected landscape of the mountain range, the house opens predominantly to the south. The walls, 2.4 meters high, extend the interior spaces beyond the perimeter of the regular four-pitched roof that rests upon them, creating outdoor areas with varying levels of intimacy. This ensures privacy from the proximity of the street to the north and the adjacent land to the west, while also allowing natural light to enter through large glazed openings.Save this picture!Save this picture! The tectonic character of the construction is emphasized by the choice of materials. The warmth of birch wood on the interior ceilings contrasts with the imposing presence of exposed concrete on the walls, which provides a coherent architectural language throughout the house. On the exterior, the concrete, natural zinc roofing, and aluminum cladding that protects the window frames ensure that the house will age naturally and require minimal maintenance.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! To meet the familys needs, the social area occupies the center of the house, serving as a meeting point that separates the two more private zones. • UK police seize Cybertruck because its illegal there
    www.popsci.com
Just because UK residents are allowed to purchase an imported Cybertruck doesnt mean they can drive it on public roads. Choosing to take the risk opens them up to a police stop. Case in point, as spotted on Bluesky by Adam Tranter: Authorities stopped the driver of one of Teslas Cyberbeast limited editions in the Greater Manchester area on Wednesday evening local timethen promptly seized it.Officers from #GMPTransportUnit stopped this Tesla Cybertruck in #Whitefield last night, the official Greater Manchester Police Bury Division posted to Facebook on January 16th.Authorities explained that while the driver was a permanent UK resident, their vehicle was registered and insured abroad. From there, cops confiscated the nearly $100,000 EV and told the alleged violator that they must provide proof of ownership and proper insurance before they can reclaim it.The Cybertruck may worry some critics and regulators in the US, but its still perfectly legal to cruise through the country in one of the over-18-foot-long, 6,800 lbs stainless steel EVs. The luxury ride thats popular with both Chechen warlords and local law enforcement, however, still lacks the UKs required certificate of conformity ensuring it meets the countrys safety standards. And unless Tesla applies for one, Cybertrucks remain banned from British streets for the conceivable future. The Tesla Cybertruck is not road legal in the UK and does not hold a certificate of conformity, the police explained. Whilst this may seem trivial to some, legitimate concerns exist around the safety of other road users or pedestrians if they were involved in a collision with a Cybertruck.Teslas entire line of EVs have received numerous recalls over the years from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), ranging from software glitches, to camera issues, to safety worries related to the companys Full Self-Driving Mode. In October 2024, Tesla released a Cybertruck over-the-air software update to fix a camera system that regulators deemed illegally slow. The NHTSA issued another recall notice earlier in the year for nearly every Cybertruck over a potentially faulty accelerator pedal. According to the announcement at the time, the problem stemmed from makers accidentally using soap instead of lubricant on many brake pads.We are just being very cautious, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at the time regarding his favorite car.The post UK police seize Cybertruck because its illegal there appeared first on Popular Science.
