As the developer explained, this effect, ideal for recreating those iconic Matrix-style bullet scenes, is not a screen-space one, meaning it remains in position even when the camera moves. It also runs entirely on the GPU and can be used with any object. Here, you can see how the effect follows specific points on the main structure, as well as the same effect applied to a different mesh:Ash then continued his experiments by applying the effect to animated objects and adding the controls to offer more customization options for the trails:Follow Ash Thornton on X/Twitter for more updates on this project and join our80 Level Talent platformand ournew Discord server, follow us on Instagram,Twitter,LinkedIn,Telegram,TikTok, andThreads, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.Source link The post Slow-Motion Sword Trail Effect Recreated With Three.js appeared first on CG SHARES.

Super Roboy is a passion project by solo developer Vincent Penning. Using his artistic talents as a tattoo artist and programming skills learned alongside his late father, Penning decided to pay tribute to his forebear by creating a video game that he felt they'd enjoy making together. This led to him taking his indie game to Kickstarter to help earn additional funds, playtesters, and feedback to create the final product that fans can now try out for themselves. All of these elements combined create Super Roboy, a hand-drawn Metroidvania adventure that sees the titular android character making his way through a desolate world searching for his lost memories and father.

There is only one consciousness in the universe, and they are one and the same. The present physical reality we inhabit could be considered a kind of dream or illusion or game that the universe

  • The Current Status of the TikTok Ban'
    lifehacker.com
The TikTok ban has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. Is the app banned? Is the app saved? What the hell is going on? These are the questions everyone's asking, and there are answersat least to some of them. Let's break the last few days down, to catch everyone up to speed with that's going on with TikTok. How did we get here?To very briefly recap, the government has been gunning to ban TikTok since the first Trump administration. Last year, Congress and the Biden administration passed a law that would effectively ban TikTok in the United States, unless ByteDance divested its stake in the app by Jan. 19. ByteDance insisted it wouldn't sell, and as the deadline approached, things got heated. TikTok went to the Supreme Court to argue the ban violated the company's First Amendment rights, but SCOTUS ruled in favor of the government. With this final defeat, TikTok swore it'd go dark unless the Biden administration stepped in to block the ban. The administration, however, punted the problem to the incoming Trump administration, saying the Biden administration would not enforce the law, and that TikTok had no reason to act before then. Meanwhile, we learned Trump was reportedly considering signing an executive order to extend the timeline for the ban, which seemed to line with the Biden administration's position. Saturday, Jan. 18That brings us to Saturday, one day before the ban was set to take effect. All eyes were on the situation, since no one really knew what would happen once we reached Jan. 19 in the U.S. The law is quite clear that, once the deadline passed, no companies could distribute, maintain, or update TikTok or its services, so it was reasonable to think TikTok would disappear from app stores in the country. However, the language of the law was less clear about whether TikTok could continue operating in the U.S. at all. Companies could not provide internet hosting services to distribute, maintain, or update TikTok, but does that include hosting as well? The Biden administration didn't seem to think so, which is why they pushed back on TikTok's threats to go dark. According to the administration, TikTok should continue operating as normal (albeit, without being able to serve new users), and wait for the Trump administration to deal with the situation.Well, TikTok didn't do that. Instead, the app went totally dark Saturday night, at least an hour and a half before the deadline was official. Users trying to access the app were greeted by a message informing them the app was banned in their country, and they could not use it at the moment. Shortly after, however, the pop-up was updated, to include an appeal to incoming President Trump: "A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!" Pretty subtle, TikTok.With the app now dark in the U.S., users turned to alternative methods to try to access TikTok. I had written about how a VPN should theoretically get around the ban, since it would make your internet traffic look as if it was coming from a country that allowed the app. However, TikTok anticipated users doing this, and decided to block traffic from American accounts entirely. The only way I was able to access TikTok via VPN was through Safari, and it was very particular about which countries would work. (Routing my traffic through Japan, for example, returned an error, but when I used Romania, it worked fine.)Sunday, Jan. 19TikTok remained dark through Sunday morning and into the early afternoon. It wasn't clear what the timeline would look like: Trump was being sworn in the next day, so would TikTok wait until a theoretical executive order before returning service? The answer was no: One day before Trump took office, he started talking about how "we have to save [TikTok]." Evidently, that was enough for TikTok, which started coming back online for American users starting around 1 p.m. ET. The whole affair lasted fewer than 15 hours, but it showed how TikTok felt about both the outgoing Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration. Monday, Jan. 20Of course, Trump took the oath of office on Monday, returning to the White House and reassuming the power of the presidency. (In attendance was TikTok CEO Shou Chew.) As part of a flurry of executive orders following the inauguration, Trump issued an order to delay TikTok's ban by 75 days. The order directs the Justice Department not to enforce the law during this time period, in an effort to find a buyer for TikTok. ByteDance and China both have remained steadfast that TikTok would not be sold, but following Trump's inauguration, the latter has shown potential interest in selling. Tuesday, Jan. 21The situation is largely the same as of Tuesday, minus one key event: Trump seems to be threatening China with tariffs if they get in the way of a deal to buy TikTok. Specifically, Trump said, because wed put tariffs on ChinaIm not saying we would, but we certainly could do that.Where do we go from here? This unprecedented situation has certainly been volatile. It was Trump himself who wanted to ban TikTok during his first term. Now, he and TikTok want to spin the situation to make Trump a "savior." But TikTok is far from out of the woods here. Apple and Google have not restored TikTok (or any of its other properties, like CapCut), and it doesn't seem clear they will while the company's legal situation is in flux. Speaking of which, the TikTok "ban" is still the law: It's truly unclear what power Trump has as president to extend the timeline here, when the law went into effect a day before he took office. The law gives the president the ability to extend the deadline by 90 days if ByteDance was actively looking to divest, but the deadline passed, so what does that mean for Trump?Trump has said he wants a U.S. company to have a 50% stake in TikTok. That's not as strict as the original law, which wants a U.S.-based company to control the app outright. Perhaps that type of deal would appeal more to ByteDance or the Chinese government, who would still regain half of the assets. We now know what a TikTok ban in the U.S. looks like: TikTok goes dark, users can't access their accounts if they were created in this country, and VPNs mainly seem to work on the web. The question now is whether we'll see a true ban happen later this year, or whether we'll see ByteDance sell some or all of the app instead.I'll keep this article updated with the latest news regarding TikTok's ban. For now, you can continue to use it as normalassuming you downloaded the app before Saturday night.

  • The Roborock Saros 10 Is Great (but It's Not My Favorite Roborock)
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page.At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year, Roborock announced it was changing the naming convention for its high-end robots to SAROS (Im told this is not an acronym for anything). A lot of attention was paid to the Saros Z70, which has an "arm" that can pick items up, but Roborock also released two additional robot vacuumsthe Saros 10 and Saros 10r. Ive had the 10 running in my home for a few weeks now, and it's a great peek into the future of floor-cleaning robots, as it has many features we saw all over CES. Overall, I was pleased by the Saros 10; its clearly the successor to the S8 line from Roborock, with a number of improvements, and while I thought it was much better than many other robot vacuums I've tested recently, I didn't think it was better than other Roborocks currently out. The Saros 10 has sleek metal buildFor the last few iterations of robots, Roborock has relied on molded black or white plastic with metal accents. Recently, it diverged from the boxy shape most robot docks offer with the Curv, which lives up to its name with a soft arc to the design. The Saros 10 looks downright futuristic, leaning heavily on polished metal with curvy white (or black) metal accents. Unlike other brands that are building docks that look like skyscrapers, the Roborock docks continue to be a bit wider but lower to the ground, able to tuck under more spaces. Credit: Amanda Blum Under the hood of the 10 is the dirty and clean water tank, which each hold about four liters of water. A panel on the front of the dock pops open to reveal the vacuum bag and dedicated dock for a cleaning solution. Even better, this is simply a container; you dont have to purchase brand-specific cartridges; you can use whatever solution you want, although obviously Roborock advises you use theirs. The robot itself is thinner than previous versions of this brand or others. While Ive lifted much of my furniture to make it easier for robots (or myself) to clean, the Saros 10 even snuggled under the middle of the couch that sags a little. The LiDAR tower on the Saros 10 is retractableThe way the Saros 10 manages to be so thin is by starting to move away from LiDAR, the mapping system almost all robot vacuums have used for the past year or two. This light-based technology required a small tower (that looks like a button) on robot vacuums in recent years that made it a bit taller. The 10 makes that tower retractable, so when the robot is navigating in spaces that are a little tightsay, under a table or couchit disappears into the robot. At that point, the robot relies on cameras, lights, and a little AI.This isnt too unusual; most robots are going in this direction, getting an assist from AI and onboard cameras that help distinguish what is in front of a robot, and whether they should ignore it (such as if your pet had a recent accident) or traverse it (say, a cord). Roborock has a lot of fancy branded words for this new navigation and AI, but ultimately, it means the robot can work at night, in tight spaces, and is less likely to get stuck. The Roborock app experience remains greatLike its predecessors, the Saros 10 comes out of the hulking box put together; all you need to do is plug it in and dock the robot. It paired within seconds by scanning a QR code on the robot itself, and as soon as I loaded up the water tank it was ready for a maiden voyage.Usually, this initial visit is where the robot leaves the dock, and using LiDAR, creates an uncomfortably accurate linear map of your space within seconds just by looking around. The Saros 10, perhaps due to the additional power of the cameras and AI, took a less cursory look around, poking its nose into every corner of the room. What it revealed at the end was a map that, yes, was accurate in terms measuring the space, but also layered in information that no other robot app had caught in such detail. For the first time, every piece of furniture, every rug, and every cord was laid out in the app. It doesnt understand that the obstacle it is encountering is an air purifier, but it nailed the shape of it in the app. This is important for two reasons: First, having accurate landmarks in the room makes creating cleaning zones much more accurateusually theyre a guess. Second, it shows how useful that AI is, since identifying correctly what the robot is encountering means that it can more accurately decide how to deal with that item. A low pile carpet needs different pressure than tile floor. Credit: Amanda Blum All the other aspects of the Roborock app that I love, including pin-and-go feature, which allows you to pin a spot on the ground and the robot will go there and, if youd like, clean it. I also love the remote control feature, which turns the app into a remote for the robot, so you can direct it wherever you like.More suction doesnt translate to a better vacuumOver the last few weeks, meeting with the engineers who made lots of the robots that debuted at CES, I was able to truly nerd out on the sorts of details most people would find banal. Among them, the design of the sweeping arm for the vacuum has changed to be two pronged instead of three, and it swings out, away from the robot to gather more dust and get closer to the wall. And while other robots vacillate between one roller or two, the Saros is the first Ive seen to feature a split roller design, which Roborock says will all but eliminate hair getting caught up in the machine. Credit: Amanda Blum I found these elements to work well to gather detritus off the floor, whether from a rug, carpet, tile, or wood. While it did a good job, I didnt think it did as well as the Curv or the Narwal Freo Z.More interesting, the Saros 10 has a stupid amount of suction power: 22,000Pa. Thats more than twice of most of the robots we saw last year, and yet, to be honest, it didnt seem to make a big difference to me. Ive asked engineers why the Pa is going so highand does it even matterand at least one admitted to me that it was mostly for marketing purposes. You shouldn't ignore this number when shopping for a robot, but it shouldn't be the deciding factor either. Saros 10 returns to the mop padThe main difference between the previous linesthe S8 and the QRevo linewas in the mops. The QRevo line features two spinning pads, while the S8 line has one vibrating mop pad. Id always preferred the pad because it simply cleaned better. But as more and more robots moved to spinning pads, I reconsidered. After thirty minutes of the Saros 10 mopping with its one vibrating mop pad, I remembered how much better they worked getting real grime off the floor. In the case of the Saros, this is aided by two additional factors: First, the 176 water that is constantly cleaning the pad. Second, the chassis on the robotbasically the robot itselfcan lift its front end. While this is intended to help it navigate spaces better, it has also been leveraged to exert pressure on the backend of the robot, where the pad is, and thus, the mop gets better contact with the floor. The Saros 10 doesnt climb stairs (but it thinks it does)Another company, Dreame, introduced a stair climbing robot this year (which, for the record, can only climb two-inch tall inclines). The thing is, the Saros 10 cant be far behind, as it repeatedly climbed thresholds in my home that approached two inches. That means your robot can get itself into a lot of trouble. Mine kept falling off a tall threshold that no other robot could do more than bump into. The point of the chassis lifting isnt to climb stairs (yet); it's to help your robot get over cords and other obstacles in the way. Its interesting to watch the robot try to navigate space using the AI on board. In many ways, its aspirational, attempting to do more than it should. Credit: Amanda Blum Thats where the AI is actually useful, even if youre a skeptic like me. Each time the robot ventured out, it got better. It was clearly learning about both my space and my belongings. The bottom lineThe Saros 10 is probably a better investment than many other robots in its price range ($1,399 when it comes out Feb. 10). I dont think its a better robot than other Roborocks. If you needed to buy one tomorrow, Id likely recommend the Curv; but if you can hold off, Id wait to see how the Saros Z70 (the one with the arm) gets reviewed.
