• UK wants all your digital data, court filing suggests
    www.computerworld.com
Your freedom and privacy are at risk as the UK government continues its dangerous attempt to drive a great hole into data security, despite the vast weight of warnings that doing so will make all of us far less safe.In almost completesecrecyand without any mandate to do so, the UK has been demanding that Appleinstall a back doorinto encrypted data. We recently heard from the US that it hadbacked off in this attempt. This may not be true, warns theFinancial Times, citing recent court filings from the top-secret Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) court in which Apple is opposing the UK demands. If that is indeed true, it will no doubt be seen in the US asfundamental dishonestyon the part of the current UK administration.Whose side are you on?The report also confirms that the UK wanted access to much more data than we thought far more than the information protected by the Advanced Data Protection feature that Applewithdrew from offering in the UKas it grappled with the governments overreach.According to theFinancial Times, the UK is demanding access to all grades of iCloud storage, and these demands extend globally: The obligations are not limited to the UK or users of the service in the UK; they apply globally in respect of the relevant data categories of all iCloud users, the IPT filing states. This hypothetically gives British law enforcement the right to access the data of Apple customers anywhere in the world, including the US.It means that UK intelligence agents will be able to get peoples data, emails, and passwords with little protection, transparency, or oversight, and that this authoritarian overreach extends to users no matter where they are from. There has been no real public debate around any of this. The back door everyone is searching forThe UK is attempting to take this action against everybodys interests in near-total secrecy, wielding a law it invented precisely to give it the power to do so. That law gives the UK Home Office the power to demand that Apple and others create dangerous back doors into encrypted data. Apple is appealing against the demand, but the case is not expected to reach court until next year. While that process continues, the understanding is that Apple may already have been forced to meet these demands, which basically means the UK has fired a starting pistol for an international hackers race to find and exploit that door.If Apple has been forced to take steps to comply with the law, then nation-states worldwide will be searching for that vulnerability, with highly resourced armies of hackers already searching for the UK-mandated dangerous data insecurity. It is only a matter of time until these designer vulnerabilitiesare identified, exploited, and abused. The UKs actions will also give carte blanche to other repressive regimes to make similar demands. A recent Apple transparency report confirmed the extent to which the UK embraces surveillance, showing the nation to makemore data requests per head of populationthan nearly every other nation. An act of digital self-harmIn tandem with the decision to force UK internet users to share their personal details with little-regulated,foreign-owned authorization companiesunder theso-calledOnline Safety Act, and the equally stupid decision to force Apple to open up key components of its operating system to third parties, it seems clear that the UK is not committed to providing a secure online environment to do business online. But while it engages in this deluded act of digital hara-kiri, the nation is also imperiling data protection for users from every other nation by demanding dangerous back doors through data encryption that impact every nation. These back doors will make everyone less secure, to the detriment of both individual liberty and international economy.Step by step, the UK is becoming a less attractive place to do any form of digital business, and given the extent to which the current administration seems unable to listen to criticism of its decisions, it makes sense to think the UK is deliberately working to undermine the digital economy its feeble GDP growth relies upon. The repeated pattern of digital self-harm is so extensive that it must be deliberate, as it would take an effort of will to be so belligerently stupid. You can follow me on social media! • Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming opposes raising taxes on sports betting
    readwrite.com
The Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) argues against raising taxes on sports betting, stating that it would create an unsustainable scenario.Speaking at a public hearing at the Senate Joint Committee, the executive president of the IBJR, Fernando Vieira, has spoken out against a provisional measure that would increase taxes on sports betting. He and the IBJR said that such a measure could destroy a recently regulated market and push millions of bettors into illegality.Theres a perception that the betting sector can pay Brazils bills alone. This is unrealistic, he said. The combined revenue of the five largest Brazilian companies is almost 50 times greater than the entire revenue of the licensed betting market. This is disproportionate and a complete breach of trust in the regulator, given that the market was regulated only eight months ago.Vieira went on to refute the claims that betting companies only pay 12% in taxes, claiming that with all consumption taxes, companies often pay as much as 28% with the Provisional Measure and more than 40% with the tax reform. This scenario is unsustainable, he added. On the contrary: it undermines legal operators and strengthens the underground market.Instead of taxes, focus on illegal marketsInstead, Vieira said that the administration should focus on tackling illegal gambling, rather than focusing on those companies already adhering to regulations and paying taxes legally. As it stands, the underground market already represents up to 51% of gambling in Brazil. The most efficient way to increase revenue is to combat illegal gambling, not to stifle those who are regulated and paying taxes, argued Vieira. People wont stop gambling, but in the underground sector, there are no rules, no audits, no protection. Externalities increase, and the consumer is the one who loses. Our appeal is clear: the solution lies in combating illegality, consolidating the regulated market, collecting revenue efficiently, and protecting gamblers.Featured image: IBJRThe post Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming opposes raising taxes on sports betting appeared first on ReadWrite.

  • The Download: humans in space, and Indias thorium ambitions
    www.technologyreview.com
This is todays edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of whats going on in the world of technology. The case against humans in spaceElon Musk and Jeff Bezos are bitter rivals in the commercial space race, but they agree on one thing: Settling space is an existential imperative. Space is the place. The final frontier. It is our human destiny to transcend our home world and expand our civilization to extraterrestrial vistas. This belief has been mainstream for decades, but its rise has been positively meteoric in this new gilded age of astropreneurs. But as visions of giant orbital stations and Martian cities dance in our heads, a case against human space colonization has found its footing in a number of recent books, from doubts about the practical feasibility of off-Earth communities, to realism about the harsh environment of space and the enormous tax it would exact on the human body. Read more about why its such a big deal.Alexander C. KaufmanRFK Jrs plan to improve Americas diet is missing the pointA lot of Americans dont eat well. And theyre paying for it with their health. A diet high in sugar, sodium, and saturated fat can increase the risk of problems like diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease, to name a few. And those are among the leading causes of death in the US.This is hardly news. But this week Robert F Kennedy Jr., who heads the US Department of Health and Human Services, floated a new solution to the problem: teaching medical students more about the role of nutrition in health could help turn things around. It certainly sounds like a good idea. If more Americans ate a healthier diet, we could expect to see a decrease in those diseases. But this framing of Americas health crisis is overly simplistic, especially given that plenty of the administrations other actions have directly undermined health in multiple waysincluding by canceling a vital nutrition education program. And at any rate, there are other, more effective ways to tackle the chronic-disease crisis. • Readiness Reimagined: How to Build a Change-Seeking Culture
    www.harvardbusiness.org
InsightsReadiness Reimagined: How to Build a Change-Seeking CultureJeff PachecoJuly 21, 2025Richard Drury/Getty ImagesIn brief:In todays artificial intelligence (AI)-driven environment, being change-ready is no longer enough. Organizations must become change-seeking, proactively scanning for opportunities, challenging norms, and moving early to stay ahead of disruption.Change-seeking cultures foster psychological safety, experimentation, feedback loops, and strategic alignmentanchored by robust learning systems that empower all employees to contribute to innovation.A change-seeking culture starts at the top. Senior leaders must go beyond supporting transformationthey need to embody it by embracing experimentation, prioritizing learning, and making innovation a visible strategic priority across the organization. For years, change-readiness has been a strategic imperative. Organizations have worked to cultivate cultures that adapt quickly and execute decisively. But in todays fast-moving, AI-driven world, readiness is no longer enough.Adaptability is still essentialbut at a greater speed. The next evolution is already underway: building a change-seeking culture. Unlike reactive, change-ready organizations, change-seeking organizations proactively scan for opportunity, challenge assumptions, and move earlybefore disruption demands it.Why Ready Isnt Ready AnymoreIn Harvard Business Impacts 2025 Global Leadership Development Study, 40% of senior leaders said their organizations are placing a greater emphasis on building change-ready cultures. But the data also revealed a shift: 71% now say the ability to lead through constant change is critical, up dramatically from just 58% in 2024. Four in 10 said leading transformation is even more crucial now than it was just one year ago.1This reflects a growing acceptance that the need for change is continuous and widespread. And in this environment, the ability to respond quickly is less powerful than the ability to anticipate and act early. What Defines a Change-Seeking Culture?Change-seeking cultures dont wait for changethey initiate it. These organizations:Encourage curiosity and experimentationProactively identify new ideas and unmet needsCreate psychological safety for taking informed risksIntegrate feedback loops that accelerate learningThey position learning and development not as a support function but as the neural network of transformationcirculating insights, capability, and culture across the enterprise. How to Foster a Change-Seeking CultureTo foster a change-seeking culture, organizations must go beyond encouraging agility. They must design for it. That means:Preparing people. AI is reshaping the way we innovate, and employees need a solid understanding of the tools involved to participate. Our research shows that organizations embracing hands-on learning are more effective at building AI fluency across roles.2Democratizing experimentation. Organizations can learn faster by getting more people involved in testing ideas. Vastly increasing the capacity to conduct experiments is becoming more critical for making decisions based on data instead of intuition.3Aligning experimentation with strategy. Innovation should be guided by a clear set of strategic priorities that matter to the business. This helps avoid experiments that generate a lot of creative ideas but may fail to deliver meaningfulefficiency, value, or growth.4Fostering psychological safety. If employees fear retribution for failure, they wont experiment. Leaders must model learning behavior, reward well-intentioned risk-taking, and create space to reflect on and learn from setbacks.Embedding feedback loops. Organizations need mechanisms for collecting, sharing, and acting on learning so that successful experiments scale and less successful ones inform future actions.A Case in Point: Moodys Moves FirstMoodysa legacy financial institutionoffers a compelling example. In a traditionally risk-averse industry, its CEO, Rob Fauber, chose to go all in on generative AI, even as many peers hesitated due to regulatory uncertainty and technical risks. As profiled in Harvard Business Reviews How a Legacy Financial Institution Went All In on Gen AI, Fauber focused not just on technology but also on learning and culture.5 His team launched the initiative with three guiding principles: Make everyone an innovator, build on new ideas, and deliver real business impact. They started with learning. Moodys invested in internal academies, upskilling campaigns, and broad-based AI fluency. The enhanced capability of the organizations workforce created conditions for accelerated innovation.By late 2024, Moodys was deploying an AI agent capable of producing risk reports in just one houra task that previously required a full week of human effort. The result wasnt just improved efficiency. It was a proof point for cultural transformation. The Leadership GapDespite examples like Moodys, many organizations remain stuck in wait and see mode. In our 2025 global leadership development study, 52% of respondents said their company is placing a greater emphasis on building an AI-ready culture. Yet only 36% felt their senior leaders fully embrace AI as a core part of strategy and operations. This mismatch between aspiration and behavior matters. Cultures take shape not just through systems and programs but also through what senior leaders talk about, reward, and demonstrate. If executives want change-seeking behavior, they need to embody itopenly experimenting, learning, and adjusting.Getting Started: Building a Change-Seeking CultureBuilding a change-seeking culture isnt about launching a single transformation program. Its about instilling an ongoing top-down and bottom-up capability for sensing and seizing whats next. Organizations can take these actions to begin:Start with learning and make it visible. Innovation still starts with people, but given AIs central role in innovation today, building AI fluency across the organization is essential.Create systems that reward initiative, not just execution. Recognize teams for surfacing new ideas, identifying inefficiencies, and learning from pilotseven when those pilots fail. Normalize the idea that progress can start with anyones ideas and initiative.Hold leaders accountable for culture. Make effectively leading change, encouraging innovation, and fostering psychological safety core performance expectations, not soft add-ons.The Bottom LineMany organizations still treat change-readiness as a strategic endpoint. But in a world of constant reinvention, its only the beginning. As technology rewires markets, roles, and operating models, the ability to initiate and lead changenot just react to itis the goal. The organizations that will succeed are those where everyone, at every level, is expected to help chart what comes next. Change-seeking is not a capability confined to innovation teams or digital labs. It is a cultural imperative.Standing still is now the greater risk. The advantage belongs to those willing to move first. To find out more about how we can help your organization build a change-seeking culture, contact ustoday.Harvard Business Impact, 2025 Global Leadership Development Study, 2025. https://www.harvardbusiness.org/insight/2025-global-leadership-development-study-fast-fluid-and-future-focused/ Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning, Learning Through Experimentation: Why Hands-On Learning Is Key to Building an AI-Fluent Workforce, Harvard Business Publishing, 2024. https://www.harvardbusiness.org/insight/learning-through-experimentation-why-hands-on-learning-is-key-to-building-an-ai-fluent-workforce. • Punitive 'Fortnite' antisteering injunction unfair & unconstitutional, says Apple
    appleinsider.com
On Friday, Apple filed another response to the 9th Circuit Court's App Store antisteering injunction, citing that it can't stand and, at the least, must be reduced in scope to be constitutional.Apple's pushback against Epic's one win continues. Image source: EpicApple won 9 out of 10 rulings in an extended legal battle with Epic Games, but that last count has become a thorn in Apple's side and bottom line. We've heard a lot of what Apple has had to say about the situation before, but it has spelled it out altogether in its latest filing.Apple's response to the 9th Circuit that we've seen hits all the high points that have been shared since the punitive injunction was placed against it in April. It reiterates that the new injunction unfairly increases the scope of the punishment against Apple, eliminates Apple's right to collect commission on purchases made as a result of its platform being involved, and ignores legal precedent set by state proceedings. • 30 Best Architecture and Design Firms in South Korea
    architizer.com
These annual rankings were last updated on August 29, 2025. Want to see your firm on next years list? Continue reading for more on how you can improve your studios ranking.South Koreas architectural language has developed over centuries, undergoing many evolutions and stylistic variations many influenced by wavering politics. From the Japanese occupation to the devastating Korean War, South Koreas urban fabric has endured many moments of unrest. Consequently, the nations pre-modern architecture is heavily influenced by Buddhism and Chinese design, such as traditional sloped-roof dwellings, temples and palaces attributed to past dynasties. Take the Changdeokgung Palace and the Haeinsa Temple, for example. These two relics are among South Koreas 15 World Heritage Sites.Alongside the tradition found in South Korean architecture is an astute interest in modern architecture and technology. Once the dust from the Korean War settled and capital increased, a new sensibility was found one that rejects pragmatism and encourages experimentation and sophistication. South Korean architects began studying abroad and fusing their international perspectives with cultural tradition to breed a distinct Korean spirit. Seoul, South Koreas capital, has become an international stage for large-scale and impressive architectural feats. With so many architecture firms to choose from, its challenging for clients to identify the industry leaders that will be an ideal fit for their project needs. Fortunately, Architizer is able to provide guidance on the top design firms in South Korea based on more than a decade of data and industry knowledge. How are these architecture firms ranked? The following ranking has been created according to key statistics that demonstrate each firms level of architectural excellence. SsD SsDSsD is an architecture firm that approaches design as a convergent, interdisciplinary venture. Minimum form takes maximum effect with the goal to bridge the utopian and the pragmatic. Instead of separating aspects of architecture, landscape, history, social systems, and codes into their constituent disciplines, these agendas are simultaneously explored so that each discipline symbiotically gains from the other. In this way sustainability emerges as an integrated rather than additive result.Along with being published in major media such as Metropolis Magazine, Dwell Magazine, Architectural Record, The New Yorker, and PBS, SsD has received many prestigious design awards including the AIA Young Architects Award, the Young Architects Forum Award by the Architectural League of NY, an Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction Award, the Metropolis Next Generation Prize, and twelve AIA awards. Some of SsDs most prominent projects include:Simgok, Sujeong-gu, Seongnam-si, South KoreaSundial House, Jung-gu, Incheon, South KoreaSongpa Micro-Housing, Songpa-gu, Seoul, South KoreaOasis PlaceBig Dig House, Lexington, MA, United States The following statistics helped SsD achieve 20th place in the 30 Best Architecture Firms in South Korea: A+Awards Finalist 3 Featured Projects 4 Total Projects 11 19. Stick Snap Stack is an alternative construction system to offer such a resilient construction framework. The system utilizes the simplicity of stacking inspired by the traditional wood joinery method. Without bonding agents, the system uses a snapping induced interlocking system for the unique stacking mechanism. The geometry of the centerpiece can be fabricated to shift the stacking angle, while modularized three legs of the assembled unit block interlock with other blocks to complete a rhombohedral unit cell acting as a self-supporting structural module. Some of DIOINNO ARCHITECTUREs most prominent projects include:HIGH LIVINGSTICK SNAP STACK, Seoul, South KoreaHotel Solitaire, Seoul, South KoreaUnduk-Naru, Seoul, South KoreaHongdo Information Center (DIOINNO + JHKA), South Korea The following statistics helped DIOINNO ARCHITECTURE PLLC achieve 18th place in the 30 Best Architecture Firms in South Korea: A+Awards Winner 1 A+Awards Finalist 2 Featured Projects 1 Total Projects 27 17. JMY architects JMY architectsArchitecturing has two main meanings. First, it refers to the basic posture and method of constructing in a present progressive sense rather than the resultant object of an architecture. Second, it also describes the object of design as a work of organizing a space rather than the external form. There is no end if architecture is confronted with difficulty.Occasionally, the numerous theories and results of architectures and cities deceive our mind and disturb the liberal thoughts of our brain. Since our knowledge and experiences are limited, an attitude of learning something new and emptying our mind everyday is required.Pure intellectual curiosity, positive thinking and attitude that can stand up to the challenges we face will broaden our knowledge and deepen our thought. It is architecturing of JMY architects to enjoy learning and doing so.Some of JMY architects most prominent projects include:Woljam-Ri House, South Korea[5X17] Daecheong-dong Small House, Busan, South Korea[Sky ground] Sinsa-dong Office Complex, Seoul, South Korea[Cheonggye-ri House] Where mountains, lakes and sky meet, apparatus at the boundary and gap, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea[EARNEST CAPE] The Hill where the sky and the sea take a break, Ulsan, South Korea The following statistics helped JMY architects achieve 17th place in the 30 Best Architecture Firms in South Korea: Featured Projects 5 Total Projects 7 16. EHLA EHLAArchitecture is nothing. However, architecture is more significant than any others like air in our life. Architecture is not a hero. Architecture is just a stage of our living. We do not want architecture to say a lot of showing language to come forward from the surroundings. As people live healthier within clean air, we want architecture to be a clean, pure and honest artifact that holds human life silently. We do not believe architecture will change the world and we do not work in order to change the world through architecture. For now, we are about to construct the architecture with architecture itself without a meta-discourse beyond architecture. Some of EHLAs most prominent projects include:House (digeut-jip), Eumseong-gun, South KoreaChubby Cat House, Seoul, South Koreavilla mangwon stacked house, Seoul, South KoreaMalefemale House, Seoul, South Koreavilla Jeju, Seogwipo-si, South Korea The following statistics helped EHLA achieve 15th place in the 30 Best Architecture Firms in South Korea: Featured Projects 4 Total Projects 7 14. • Creative Techniques for Shooting in Harsh Midday Sunlight
    iso.500px.com
Midday sun is often labelled the enemy of good photography; harsh, unflattering, and full of contrast. But with the right techniques, midday sunlight photography can become a powerful creative tool. Instead of avoiding the brightest part of the day, embrace it. Midday light offers sharp shadows, bold colors, and opportunities to experiment with graphic compositions and high-contrast scenes. Why Midday Sunlight Photography Deserves a Second LookWhile golden hour has its dreamy appeal, the sun at its peak presents a distinct and dramatic aesthetic. Hard light emphasizes form and texture, revealing detail in everything from architecture to skin. Shadows are crisp and defined, ideal for storytelling through contrast. In street photography, midday sun creates striking light-and-shadow patterns. In landscapes, it enhances texture in rocky terrain or dry vegetation. For portraits, it can add a raw, editorial edgeespecially when you understand how to work with (not against) the light. How to Make the Most of Harsh LightMidday sunlight photography doesnt have to be difficult; it just demands intention. Use these approaches to make it work for you:Use shadows creatively: Look for repeating patterns, lines, and grids created by architecture or trees. Harsh shadows can act as compositional elements on their own, guiding the viewers eye or creating mood.Try black-and-white photography: High contrast scenes are a natural fit for monochrome. Stripping away color lets the graphic power of the light and shadow take center stage.Position your subject thoughtfully: Instead of avoiding the sun, use it to highlight specific features. Frame your subject so the light carves out their silhouette, or experiment with side lighting to emphasize texture.Use objects as natural diffusers: Seek shade under tree canopies, awnings, or sheer fabrics to soften light without losing the drama of the scene.Overexpose for effect: Lean into the brightness. Slight overexposure can create a blown-out, dreamy feel, especially effective in editorial or lifestyle photography.Tip: If shooting portraits, have your subject face away from the sun or use a reflector to bounce soft light onto their face while keeping the background brightly lit.Embracing the Bold AestheticMidday sun isnt about subtletyits about confidence. Whether youre drawn to deep shadows, vibrant colors, or exaggerated forms, this light encourages boldness in your visual storytelling. Think fashion campaigns shot under desert sun, or street images where humans disappear into light-and-shadow geometry. With a creative mindset and a few key techniques, midday light shifts from challenge to opportunity, inviting you to push your vision further when others are packing up their gear.Extended reading:Harnessing Light and Shadow to Enhance Your StorytellingThe post Creative Techniques for Shooting in Harsh Midday Sunlight appeared first on 500px.
