    What makes an app delightful
The micromoments ofjoy.Imagine using a app that just moves from one screen to another, boring and static. Now compare it to an app where every transition feels natural. Animations can make digital experiences feel magical. Give the user something to remember and feel good about using that product over and over again. In this post, Ill share examples from apps Ive encountered over the past decade of my product design journey, and detailing out some of my thumb-rules to add delight into yourapps.https://60fps.design/shots/tilt-otp-verifiedWhy itmattersDelight in app design goes beyond adding fun interactionsits about creating experiences that make software feel more human and responsive. Its the thoughtful details that make an app feel good, creating an emotional connection between the user and theproduct. From a psychological perspective, delightful design taps into the brains reward system. When users experience a smooth transition, a playful animation, or a satisfying interaction, it triggers a small release of dopaminethe chemical associated with pleasure and reward. These micro-moments of joy not only make the experience more enjoyable but also encourage users to keep coming back. The key lies in crafting those aha moments where the experience feels both novel and meaningful, creating a lasting impression. In a crowded market, its these small but impactful details that make a product stand out, transforming it into an experience users cherish and remember.https://60fps.design/apps/mistDelightful experiences feelnaturalIn the real world, nothing appears or disappears instantly, yet apps often feel artificial due to abrupt changes. To create a more natural experience, transitions should ease users into changes rather than jarringthem.Smooth and realistic animations bridge the gap between digital and physical, making interactions feel intuitive.Like in the Airbnb iOS app example above, the host passport reveal animation feels natural, like flipping through a real passport. Its smooth motion makes the experience intuitive and enjoyable.https://60fps.design/shots/airbnb-host-reveal-animationSimilarly, the shot below from Untitled iOS App lets you swap out discs as if you were doing it in real life while selecting a profile picture. The cover naturally expands to type in the username, perfectly mimicking real-world interaction of a CDholder.https://60fps.design/shots/untitled-disk-picker-interactionDelightful experiences engages thesensesWhen multiple senses are engagedthrough visual, auditory, or tactile feedbackusers form a stronger emotional connection with the product. These sensory touches not only elevate the experience but also leave a lasting impression of the brand in the usersmemory. In the Opal iOS app, unlocking a gem feels so satisfyingyou tap to crack the stone bit by bit, with every tap giving you haptic feedback and sound. On the final crack, the gem bursts out and scales up with a magical sound. Totally gamified and sofun!https://60fps.design/shots/opal-gem-unlocked-animationIn the Not Boring Habits iOS app, checking off a habit feels so rewardingits has this zooming sound, haptics, light rays filling in the check, and then a final explosion. So satisfying!https://60fps.design/shots/not-boring-habits-long-press-mark-habit-interactionDelightful experiences feel purposefulBy selectively emphasizing certain elements or moments, you can guide the users focus and make features more memorable. Even rarely used features deserve attention; surprising users with thoughtful details in these areas can create moments of delight that feel fresh andnovel.Like in the Airbnb iOS app example below, your eye is instantly drawn to the pop-up, framing it as a rare place to find and building trust. The gem spins and sparkles, and the text subtly bounces with a spring effect, making the whole interaction feel so smooth andnatural.https://60fps.design/apps/airbnbThe slider on Gentler Streak is such a fun touchthe mascot shows emotions as you adjust exertion levels after a workout, and the haptics match the vibe. Soft feedback when youre below range and quicker, snappier haptics when youre in the usualrange.https://60fps.design/apps/gentler-streakDelightful experiences balance intensityNot all moments require the same level of emphasis. Varying the intensity of delightful touches ensures that interactions remain special overtime.https://benji.org/family-values#delight-through-selective-emphasisUsing too many delightful features, especially in parts of the app people use often, can lose its impact. Instead, keep things subtle where it makes sense and highlight where it will surpriseusers. From Queue iOS app with emotes popping out above the pause button to subtly emphasise that playback is active. This small interaction feels intentional and adds charm without overwhelming theuser.https://60fps.design/shots/queue-emoji-pop-animationIn the Miles iOS app, the welcome sheet smoothly transforms into the permission sheet, creating a sense of flow and continuity. Each movement feels natural, like stepping forward in a physical space. Many apps stick to static transitions, focusing only on speed. While speed matters, I believe using motion thoughtfully can improve clarity while still feeling just asquick.https://60fps.design/apps/milesOn BlinkIts iOS App when you remove a product from the cart, The item animates out from the floating widget and goes poof! Its a small detail, but someone clearly obsessed over it, turning a routine action into a delightful little surprise.https://60fps.design/shots/blinkit-add-remove-cart-animationOn Family App when you try swiping over the price chart you can see the trend arrow flips direction up or down along with the changing numbers. Small detail, but delights theuser.https://60fps.design/apps/familyWinding upGetting it right takes some trial and error, especially with animationsthey require patience and a fresh set of eyes. Stepping away and coming back later helps you spot the little imperfections and tweak them justright. For founders, making a great app means understanding how users think, using animations and feedback thoughtfully, and adding small, special touches. When you pay attention to the little details, you create products people dont just usethey love, remember and share it with otherpeople.ResourcesThe Worlds Most Satisfying CheckboxAndyAllenFamily ValuesBenjiTaylorGreat AnimationsEmil KowalskiVideo shots from 60fps.designWhat makes an app delightful was originally published in UX Collective on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

How to Claim Your Piece of Apple's $20 Million Watch Settlement
If you had an Apple Watch between 2015 and February of last year, theres a chance the company might owe you a small payout. Thats thanks to a recent $20 million settlement on a class action lawsuit over swollen batteries.Apple has denied all wrongdoing, saying in a statement sent to Lifehacker sister publication CNET that we strongly disagree with the claims made against these early generation Apple Watch models. Still, rather than move forward with legal fees, the company is just choosing to pay a lump sum and get it over with instead. Given that the lawsuit, Smith et al. v. Apple Inc, lasted for over five years, thats understandable.Getting your piece of the settlement might not be so simple, however. In order to qualify, you need to have already taken action, having reported battery swelling on an Apple Watch first-generation, Series 1, Series 2, or Series 3 model to Apple between April 24, 2015 and Feb. 6, 2024. If that sounds like you, you do not need to submit a claim, but there are a few steps you can take to ensure payment.First, keep an eye out for an email or postcard notifying you of your eligibility for payment. This will have a notice ID or confirmation code, which youll then need to enter on the settlement website to update your payment information. Youll have until April 10 to send this information over, and if you feel like you should qualify but dont get a notice, you can also reach out to a toll free number or the settlement administrators address to get the ball rolling, per section 7 of the settlement sites FAQ.Alternatively, if youd rather opt out of the settlement, which will preserve your right to pursue your own legal action against Apple, you can do so through the same process. Once the dust has settled, class members can expect a payout of about $20 per affected watch, although specifics might vary depending on the number of people who update their payment information, capping out at $50 per affected watch.

This Experimental Google Feature Lets You Send Robocalls to Local Businesses
Usually, its the businesses that are behind robocalls, but if you work at a nail salon or an auto repair shop, get ready for customers to start sending hordes of AI Karens your way.Googles latest experimental AI feature, available to those who sign up for Ask for me on Google Search Labs, is aiming to be a sort of personal AI secretary for you. Once enabled, itll pop up an Ask for me button under certain searches, promising to call local shops for you to help you figure out availability, service costs, and the like.Clicking the Ask for me button will take you to a form, where youll fill out, for example, the make and model of your car, what services you need, and when you can come in. Google will then canvass local shops (there doesnt seem to be an option to send a call only to a specific shop) and then email or text you back with results. On their end, business owners will hear a message at the start of every call indicating that its an automated system calling on behalf of a potential customer, Google spokesperson Craig Ewer told The Verge. If that sounds annoying, business owners can opt out, either within their Google Business Profile settings or by simply telling the AI not to call them back. For those that decide to humor the robocalls, Ewer told The Verge that Google is doing its best to ensure businesses dont get overloaded with calls, and will use information collected from prior calls to help answer future ones without bothering an employee.Over on X, Google product lead Rose Yao said Ask for me is powered by Duplex, an existing Google feature that (mostly) uses AI to make reservations on your behalf, but its more geared towards research than actually booking anything. As its still experimental, its limited to nail salons and auto shops for now, though it could presumably expand in the future. As someone with social anxiety, I can see the surface level appeal here, although Im not sure Id ever want to commit the sin of making someone else talk to a robot.

The Morning After: Our verdict on the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S25
Its early 2025, the weathers still cold, so it must be time for Samsung to kick off the years flagship smartphone race with its latest barrage of devices. This time, weve got three S25 phones, ranging from the $800 S25 through to the $1,300 S25 Ultra.Lets start with the flagship, the S25 Ultra. This year, Samsung has honed the design of the slate to closer match the rest of its family, while adding a substantially upgraded ultrawide camera sensor. Theres also a powerful 3nm Snapdragon Elite for Galaxy added, a collaboration between Samsung and Qualcomm that augments its computational photography skills and more. (Not to mention incredible battery life.)And you know what? Its another great phone, capable of going toe-to-toe with the iPhones and Pixels of this world. However, it also looks very similar to last years model, which makes the S25 Ultra a less impressive update, given its price. Then theres the Galaxy S25 priced the same as the last few S-series base models. I spent over a week with it, and much of its hardware remains the same, with incremental improvements to the camera, courtesy of behind-the-scenes processing, and that incredible battery life. And its Samsung, so it was always going to be a solid premium phone with a gorgeous screen. But if you were thinking of upgrading from an S24 (or S23, even S22), its a hard pitch. Apple is reportedly killing its Mac-connected AR glasses project
Apple just hit another snag in its effort to find a foothold in the headset market targeting everyday users. The tech giant has reportedly canceled its project to build augmented reality glasses that could be paired with its devices. The project, code-named N107, was supposed to produce glasses that look normal but have added displays and would require connection to a Mac, Bloomberg reported. Yet the company reportedly struggled to produce the right tech at an attractive price point.Apple initially tried to get the glasses to pair with an iPhone, but ran into problems with battery life, Bloomberg reported. But the switch to the Mac, which has a bigger battery and faster processors, performed poorly among Apples executives, the report said.Pulling the project means Apple is likely falling even further behind its tech competitors. Meta, for example, unveiled its Orion AR glasses last fall. The Apple glasses were reportedly similar to Xreals One and Lenovos ThinkReality versions of AR glasses. At the same time, Apples Vision Pro headset has been slow to find adoption due to its $3,499 price tag. The company reportedly paused work on the Vision Pro 2 last summer in order to focus on creating a cheaper model.

Who is Chris Rocheleau? Trumps acting FAA administrator will navigate deadly plane crash aftermath
On Thursday, President Donald Trumpannounced that he appointed Chris Rocheleau, a former senior aviation official, as acting head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).Rocheleau will be handling the response to the deadly collision Wednesday night of an American Airlines plane with an Army Black Hawk helicopter that sent both plunging into the Potomac River. He will serve in the position until President Trumps nominee is confirmed by the Senate.Michael Whitaker, the FAAs most recent administratora 30-year aviation industry veteran, who was unanimously confirmed as FAA administrator by the Senate in October 2023resigned on January 20, as President Trump took office, following continued public criticism from Elon Musk, Trumps close adviser, who called on Whitaker to resign. Muskss issues with Whitaker were personal, having to do with fines the Whitaker-led FAA proposed on SpaceX, Musks space-technology company, over alleged government violations in two of its rocket launches.Rocheleau has more than two decades of experience working for the FAA, serving in multiple roles, including acting associate administrator for aviation safety; chief of staff; assistant administrator for policy, international affairs, and environment; executive director for international affairs; and director of the office of emergency operations and investigations. Most recently, he served as an executive at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA).Chris is an outstanding leader who will be good for the FAA, good for aviation, and good for the country, especially at this challenging time, said NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen in a statement. He has demonstrated excellence at every level in the government, military, and aviation industry. The American Airlines regional jet that collided with the Army helicopter had 67 people on board, including several figure skaters, among them 1994 world championsEvgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov. On Thursday, the president falsely blamed adiversity push at the FAAfor the midair collision, even blaming Democrats for their policies. Tennessee Garvey, a pilot and the chair of the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, has pushed back against President Trumps comments. The plane wreckage is currently being housed in Hangar 7 at Reagan airport. A preliminary report into the investigation is expected to be released in a month.
