How IT Leaders Can Weather Geopolitical Unrestwww.informationweek.comOver the past couple of years, geopolitical tensions have been rising in various parts of the world. In the best case, the Trump administration may help deescalate tensions and violence. Alternatively, the US could find itself in a war that isnt limited to foreign soil. As a result, CIOs, CTOs, and CISOs need to be prepared.Political instability causes risks to global supply chains, data security and operational resilience, says Steve Tcherchian, CISO and chief product officer at security solution provider XYPRO. Just in the past year, we've seen disruptions in logistics, fluctuating regulatory environments, and cyber threats escalating due to geopolitical tensions. This creates blind spots in business continuity planning, especially for organizations reliant on international vendors, partners or regional operations. For example, ensuring data compliance in multiple jurisdictions becomes exponentially more complex during politically volatile times. My biggest concerns are supply chain vulnerabilities, cybersecurity threats from state sponsored threat actors targeting critical infrastructure, and navigating changes in trade restrictions, compliance, tariffs and more, says Tcherchian. These are headaches to manage in normal times, let alone during geopolitical tensions.Related:His advice is to be proactive. Understand the scope of assets, data and infrastructure and build operations that can adapt to unpredictable conditions. This includes having alternate suppliers, transport routes and workforce contingencies. The intersection of cyber and political risks throws cybersecurity in the forefront. Dont take cyber resilience lightly, says Tcherchian. Implement a zero-trust security strategy, deploy real time threat detection, maintain compliance with global security frameworks, [and] educate your teams.Change Management and Monte Carlo Simulations Are WiseBob Hutchins, an organizational psychologist and author of Our Digital Soul: Collective Anxiety, Media Trauma, and Path Toward Recovery, says geopolitical instability is a challenge that many of his clients face.[P]olitical instability has created significant unpredictability in supply chains, workforce stability and market access, says Hutchins. Ive seen businesses freeze expansion plans, lose key talent due to geopolitical unrest and grapple with regulatory shifts that feel like moving targets. These disruptions dont just slow growth -- they can create a pervasive sense of unease that trickles down to employees, further compounding challenges.Related:For example, one international company recently had to reconfigure its entire supply chain after new tariffs disrupted its primary import route. The ripple effect included increased costs, delayed production, and strained relationships with long-time partners. My biggest concern is the emotional toll instability takes on leadership teams and employees. Anxiety about the future can lead to decision paralysis or reactive strategies that lack long-term foresight, says Hutchins. This heightened tension can erode trust within organizations, making it harder to maintain cohesion during already difficult times. Another concern I've seen is the rise of decision fatigue among leaders. Navigating constant upheaval drains energy and focus, which can lead to poor choices or a lack of innovation.Shock resulting from the unexpected can cause organizational leaders to scramble and make snap decisions that may make sense in the short-term, but backfire in the long-term, like the way the pandemic impacted organizations. One of the most effective strategies Ive seen is fostering adaptability. Businesses that treat change as a constant and prepare for multiple scenarios tend to fare better, says Hutchins.Related:To help his clients prepare, Hutchins prioritizes scenario planning to think through the what if scenarios so leaders can anticipate and mitigate risks. He also underscores the need for clear, honest communication with employees about the challenges the organization is facing and having a plan in place helps build trust. Finally, he recommends investing in mental health so employees and leaders can manage stress and perform better, even under pressure.Start by focusing on what you can control. While you cant obviously stabilize geopolitics, you can create stability within your organization by being transparent, flexible, and supportive, says Hutchins. Be proactive in scenario planning and ensure you have redundancies in place for critical operations. Leaders who listen and adapt based on their teams feedback are better equipped to make thoughtful, forward-thinking decisions.XYPROs Tcherchian also stresses the need for extreme agility.Constant political instability may be our new reality, says Tcherchian. Foster a culture of resilience within your company, partners and vendors. Be agile and adaptable. Dont treat instability as an obstacle, rather as an opportunity to build a more adaptive, innovative and resilient organization.0 Commentarios ·0 Acciones ·48 Views

Showbiz Pizzas Rock-afire Explosion Is Still Playing in 2 Citiesscreencrush.comOne of the most iconic music acts from the 80s is still cranking at the tunes in two cities, but without all the pizza, Skee-Ball and video gamesYears after it had been seemingly eliminated from all Showbiz Pizza and Chuck E. Cheese locations, the Rock-afire Explosion lives on.What Is the Rock-afire Explosion? For those with childhoods void of the sensory overload that was Showbiz Pizza, the chain was pretty much what Chuck E. Cheese is today. There is one notable exception that sets the two apart ... the Rock-afire Explosion. The animatronic band of animals would entertain Showbiz Pizza guests while they caught their breath between arcade games and slices of pizza. Their show was a mix of family-friendly humor and songs.Eventually, all of the Showbiz Pizza locations turned into Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, which also meant a new identity for members of the Rock-afire Explosion. Before long, the band and its updated look were gone for good from every Chuck E. Cheese.A renewed interest in the animatronic group popped up in the early 2000s when a YouTube channel started posting videos of the characters programmed to perform current songs in someone's home.A documentary on the Rock-afire Explosion followed, but it wasnt enough to catapult the fictitious band back into pizza joints across the U.S.But the band does play on in at least two cities with performances open to the public.Where To Find The Rock-afire ExplosionAudiences can still enjoy the songs and skits of the classic animatronic band in two locations that are definitely not Chuck E. Cheese.Billy Bob's Wonderland in Barboursville, West Virginia is a family entertainment center akin to places like Showbiz and Chuck E. Cheese. The attraction's name was even inspired by the Billy Bob character from Showbiz. Here, the Rock-afire Explosion continues to entertain guests with their typical skits and stories. Just dont expect the band to look exactly like it did during your childhood. To say the years haven't been kind to the band would be an understatement, YouTuber Sully says in a recent video of his visit. Billy Bobs Wonderland is also home to some of the most horrific Rock-afire masks I have ever seen.Regardless of how the band may look, fans continue to flock to Billy Bobs Wonderland to see the show. The popularity has even blossomed BillyCon, an annual convention celebrating all things Showbiz Pizza and its characters.READ MORE: Iconic Chain Restaurant Returning 20 Years After Bankrupt, Illness OutbreakA second option to partake in a Rock-afire Explosion performance doesnt even require you to go into a restaurant.Drive a little more than an hour northwest of Chicago and you will find Volo, a village of around 6,000 people. One of the communitys biggest attractions is the Volo Museum.Over the years, the museum has blossomed from being mostly a collection of cars from movies and TV shows to various exhibits that will conjure up a sense of nostalgia. In summer 2024, the Volo Museum unveiled its latest attraction, the Rock-afire Explosion. The band is hidden behind garage doors that open every 20 minutes for guests to enjoy their show outdoors. The gang has come a long ways since being stuck performing at the same pizza joint every night.Totally 80s: The Pictures That Take You BackTake a nostalgic journey through the '80s with these iconic photoscapturing the fashion, toys, and unforgettable news events that left a lasting impact on a generation. The Download: mice with two dads, and Metas fact-checking challengeswww.technologyreview.comThis is today's edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what's going on in the world of technology. Mice with two dads have been created using CRISPR Whats new: Mice with two fathers have been bornand have survived to adulthoodfollowing a complex set of experiments by a team in China. The researchers used CRISPR to create the mice, using a novel approach to target genes that normally need to be inherited from both male and female parents. They hope to use the same approach to create primates with two dads. Why it matters: Humans are off limits for now, but the work does help us better understand a strange biological phenomenon known as imprinting, which causes certain genes to be expressed differently depending on which parent they came from. Earlier this month, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta will cut back on its content moderation efforts and eliminate fact-checking in the US in favor of the more democratic approach that X (formerly Twitter) calls Community Notes. The move is raising alarm bells, and rightly so. Meta has left a trail of moderation controversies in its wake, and ending professional fact-checking creates the potential for misinformation and hate to spread unchecked. Im a community moderator who researches community moderation. Heres what Ive learned about the limitations of relying on volunteers for moderationand what Meta needs to do to succeed. Council on the hunt for consultant team to help with Old Trafford regeneration planswww.bdonline.co.ukManchester United to make decision on whether to rebuild or refurbish current ground by summerSource: ShutterstockThe current ground has been Manchester Uniteds home since 1910Trafford Council is advertising for what it describes as a top-class consultant team to help it develop the masterplan of the Trafford Wharfside area which include a potential new stadium for Manchester United.Teams have until 24 February to send in tenders for the work with the winning team working with the council as well as the football club and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. It said it wants to deliver a transformational and sustainable international destination for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors. At its heart is likely to be a new, 100,000-seat stadium for United, with industry rumours suggesting Foster & Partners is being lined up to design it, as well as 15,000 new homes.A rebuild of Old Trafford has not yet been confirmed with an alternative focussing on a revamp of the existing ground with its capacity increased to 87,000 from its current 75,000. The last major work was carried out by Laing ORourke nearly 20 years ago, which involvedadding 7,900 seats to the capacity by filling in the grounds north-west and north-east corners. The Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, chaired by Lord Coe, who headed the successful London 2012 Olympics bid, completed its feasibility work earlier this month. In a statement, Manchester United said: Both options [the new stadium or revamp of the existing one] remain under consideration, with the club set to decide on the preferred approach ahead of the summer. One source told Building Designs sister title Building three years ago, when plans were first mooted about rebuilding the stadium: I worked on Old Trafford, it is a cheap nasty series of buildings. It looked cheap then and looks embarrassing now.The architecture is horrific. There is nothing that can be done to refurbish this stadium in my view, it is a complete rebuild job.Not on this site, it is too close to the railway. Build it close by.Announcing the hunt for a consultant team had begun, Trafford Councils executive member for economy and regeneration, Liz Patel, said: We are now on the lookout for a world-class consultant team to shape the vision for the area. This is a hugely exciting project and working with our partners and private developers, we will be looking to create thousands of new homes, new neighbourhoods and help create a world-class setting for the Manchester United stadium. The tender has been advertised on The Chest, which is the North West Local Authority Procurement Portal. The Old Trafford regeneration was given government backing earlier today by chancellor Rachel Reeves although business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said it would not be funding any of the sporting elements of the work. But of course the wider area, transport, housing, we want to work with local areas to deliver that, he added.0 Commentarios ·0 Acciones ·48 Views

Chancellor confirms backing for third runway at Heathrowwww.bdonline.co.ukRachel Reeves outlining her strategy for growth this morningThe chancellor has confirmed the governments support for a third runway at Heathrow in a major speech today on economic growth and wants proposals to be brought forward by this summer.Rachel Reeves decision to back the airport scheme had been much trailed as her and prime minister Keir Starmer have sought to put their government on a firmer footing after an autumn budget that weakened market sentiment.Speaking at the Siemens Healthineers facility in Eynsham, Oxfordshire, she said that the last full length runway in Britain had been built in the 1940s and criticised previous governments for allowing a decision on a third Heathrow runway to run on for decades.I can confirm today that this government supports a third runway at Heathrow and is inviting proposals to be brought forward by the summer, she said.We will then take forward a full assessment through the airport National Policy Statement. This will ensure that the project is value for money, and our clear expectation is that any associated surface transport costs will be financed through private funding, and it will ensure that a third runway is delivered in line with our legal, environmental and climate objectives. As well as Heathrow, Reeves also threw her backing behind the Lower Thames Crossing and plans to redevelop Manchester Uniteds Old Trafford stadium and the surrounding area. She also committed to work with Doncaster council and the mayor of South Yorkshire to re-open Doncaster Sheffield airport. The other major announcement made by Reeves was that the government would revive plans to support a growth corridor between Cambridge and Oxford. At the moment it takes two and a half hours to travel between Oxford and Cambridge by train [.] and there is a lack of affordable housing across the region, she said. The demand is there, but there are far to many supply side constraints on economic growth here.Key announcements in Reeves speechBacking for Heathrow and Lower Thames Crossing, with private finance options to be explored for the latterThe Environment Agency has lifted objections to development around Cambridge that could unlock 4,500 new homes and associated amenitiesWater companies will unlock 7.9bn investment for next five years to improve water infrastructure, including nine new reservoirs, such as the Fens Reservoir serving Cambridge and the Abingdon Reservoir near OxfordFunding confirmed for East-West Rail with a new East Coast Mainline station in Tempsford and upgrades to the A428 between Milton Keynes and CambridgeFormer chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance appointed as Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor champion and a new growth commission to be set up for OxfordCommitment to change Green Book rules on investmentCreation of new designated marine areas, removing barriers to the delivery of 16GW of offshore windAction plan for government regulators to promote economic growth to be published in MarchInfrastructure and planning bill and 10 year infrastructure strategy to be published in the Spring. Refreshed carbon budget delivery plan to be published later in the yearReeves committed to funding for the East-West Rail scheme and said the government would support greater housing delivery along the line.We have already received proposals for new towns along the new railway, with 18 submissions for sizeable new developments, she said.At Tempsford, a village sitting on the East Coast Main Line, A1 and East West Rail, Reeves said the government would move quicker to deliver a main line station, meaning journey times to London of under an hour and to Cambridge in under 30 minutes when East-West Rail is operational. She announced that Patrick Vallance, the governments chief scientific adviser during covid, would be made champion for the Oxford-Cambridge Growth corridor. He will work with local leaders and with the housing and planning minister and with Peter Freeman , chair of the Cambridge Growth Company, as well as a new growth commission for Oxford.Reeves also revealed that, after interventions to address water scarcity issues, the Environment Agency had lifted objections to new developments in Cambridge, meaning 4,500 additional homes can now be built. The rest of Reeves speech was focused on solving supply side obstacles to economic growth, which she described as the number one priority of the government. She said that for too long politicians had lacked the courage to confront supply side challenges and had chosen not to prioritise growth.Having met the heads of the largest government regulators earlier this month, and replaced the chair of the Competition and Markets Authority, Reeves said an action plan for cutting red tape would be published in March. She also promised that an infrastructure and planning bill, to streamline the planning process for major projects, would be published in the Spring, alongside a ten year infrastructure strategy, and that the government would also publish a refreshed carbon budget delivery plan later this year.Reeves also revealed the Treasury was reviewing the green book, which determines which investment projects are deemed worthy of public support, to ensure more schemes outside of the south-east are backed.Industry reactionMarie-Claude Hemming, director of operations for the Civil Engineering Contractors AssociationThe Government should be applauded in its commitment to airport expansion, which is an issue that has been kicked into the long grass by successive administrations, but which is vital to the UKs future as a global trading nation. In addition, the Chancellors decision to amend HM Treasurys Green Book rules to further distribute the benefits of investment across the UK reflects a long-held CECA policy, and will lead to a wider distribution of economic growth across all parts of the country. We welcome the fact that the UK Government has committed to unleashing the full potential of the UK economy through public and private investment in infrastructure.Industry is keenly awaiting the publication of this Springs Planning and Infrastructure Bill, but the Chancellors commitment to speeding up planning and removing blockers to growth, such as excessive use of judicial review, are positive signs that the UK Government has listened to industry, and will act accordingly.Heathrow expansion will be the largest privately-funded infrastructure project in Europe and will be central to ensuring the UK remains an attractive place to live and do business in - it is exactly the sort of ambitious scheme we need to drive connectivity and kick-start economic growth.CECA members are poised and willing to work with the UK Government to accelerate project delivery so that businesses and communities across the UK can feel the benefits of investment as soon as possible, raising living standards in all parts of the country, as well as building the foundation of a stronger economy for the future.Melanie Leech, chief executive, British Property FederationWe fully support the Chancellors focus on removing the barriers to growth and welcome todays speech as a necessary re-affirmation of the Governments commitment to action.Investors need certainty and a reason to put their money into the UK the planning system has been an investment deterrent for too long. The Government is absolutely right to remove barriers to the delivery of new homes and essential infrastructure by streamlining decision-making, encouraging development by transport hubs, simplifying the planning regime through a greater use of Local Development Orders and re-focusing the role of statutory consultees. The property sector strongly supports the introduction of more strategic planning. Such larger than local planning will enable both housing and employment uses to be holistically planned across local boundaries, which will be hugely beneficial to local and national economies. However, while these intentions are good, without adequate resourcing of planning departments, these ambitions will falter. The Government needs to plan for more than 300 planners and allow planning departments to fully recover their costs while ring-fencing the income to protect the service. We welcome the new mandate for the National Wealth Fund and Office for Investment to work with local leaders to develop tailored investment strategies and deliver a pipeline of incoming projects linked to regional growth priorities. The BPF has long argued for pension reform that would enable pension schemes to more easily invest in real estate. Increased flexibility on how defined benefit pension funds can invest is welcome and will enable this huge pool of capital to be more readily deployed into renewing the UKs built environment.Lord Hutton, chair, Association of Infrastructure Investors in Public Private PartnershipsThe Chancellor is right, but its impossible to plug the maintenance hole or build new infrastructure without bringing in the private sector.Every other western country uses a similar approach to public private partnerships , which the UK pioneered, but then cancelled in 2018.Were now a low investment nation: since 2000 investment has averaged 2.5% of GDP, less than two-thirds of the OECD average. If we are to go for growth, we need a new vision for private investment in our social infrastructure.Justin Sullivan, president, RICSRachel Reeves is correcting the course of Labours growth journey. The tough decisions have been made; now its time to press ahead with much-needed reforms.Since the Budget confidence amongst companies in the built environment has tailed off spelling bad news for housing and infrastructure delivery particularly among SMEs, the backbone of construction supply chains, whose ability to borrow, grow and deliver disproportionately relies on sentiment across the economy. These have combined to undermine the positive impact of changes to the National Planning Policy Framework, announced in December. But Rachel Reeves speech today will help reset the mood.By streamlining decisions on critical infrastructure projects and slashing red tape, policymakers should achieve their ultimate aim of economic growth by capturing the potential of high-growth, knowledge-intensive ecosystems like the Oxford-Cambridge Arc.While Reeves is focusing on the biggest, most newsworthy projects like the East-West Rail link her department must work with MHCLG and local councils to realise the strategic benefit of improving more local, smaller scale infrastructure projects like local road networks, water utilities, and public transport links. Part of this focus must be on addressing the skills crisis that affects every corner of the built environment.Colin Wood, chief executive, Aecom Europe and IndiaThe Governments support for an expanded Heathrow Airport is a welcome move. Expansion is a vital step forward in securing growth and the UKs ability to maintain its position on the global stage, while also addressing the need for increased capacity that will follow.Alongside development of the ten-year infrastructure strategy, this will provide the infrastructure sector with some certainty around project pipeline and delivery.Recent updates to the National Planning Policy Framework and the Chancellors reforms to the planning system should fast-track much-needed infrastructure projects across all sectors, including housing developments, transport and energy systems. This significant overhaul of the UKs planning system and a commitment to delivering the 10-year infrastructure strategy will be key to spurring investment and growth in the years to come.0 Commentarios ·0 Acciones ·43 Views

I Tried AI as a Stylist. It Was Surprisingly Fashionablewww.cnet.comDressing for trends can be a losing game, especially when you have limited closet space and budget. There's a lot of crappy clothes out there, and the proliferation of fast fashion to meet the demand of faster-moving trends makes it tempting to fire up the old credit card and fill your cart with flashes in the pan made of plastic byproducts. So I tried turning to artificial intelligence for help in building out the only wardrobe I'll ever need.A quick Google search reveals a rich and competitive landscape filled with AI tools meant to guide budding fashionistas through the scrum of today's offerings.Style DNA, for example, promises to "assist with your everyday style dilemmas" through facial and item recognition designed to help you dress for your body type and different occasions.Stylee uses AI to generate specific looks and complimentary color palettes, and Aiuta offers direct purchasing for its recommendations. These sound great if you're not sure where your personal style lands and need from-scratch advice on how to dress, but I already have a good idea of what I'm looking for. Capturing the nuance of my split-personality style is a challenge I suspect only one tool can tackle: ChatGPT.The right AI tool for styleChatGPT, launched in 2022 by OpenAI, operates using conversational -- and sometimes complicated -- search prompts to return results from its training data. Kind of like a chatbot that pulls its information from limited internet access instead of a preprogrammed set of responses. You can either make a limited amount of requests each day for free or pay anywhere from $20 to $25 a month to upgrade and increase the number of requests. It depends on how chatty you want to get.For the advice I want from ChatGPT, I have pretty specific criteria:No plastic clothes. The invention of the polyester blend has bloomed into the bane of conservationists shouting at consumers about the use of plastics in fast fashion. I'm looking to eliminate plastics from my wardrobe -- mostly due to a traumatic sweat-related incident during an important pitch meeting in which my nonbreathable polyester top thoroughly betrayed me -- so I want items with at least 90% natural fibers.Classic looks. Since we're shooting for a wardrobe built to last through all the low-rise, mom-jean, wide-leg, skinny-pant, bold-print whiplash trends, I want to stick with items that will wear just as well in my elder millennial era as they will when I'm an actual elder yelling at AI-generated teens to get off my cyberlawn.Modest price point. While I'm fortunate to have enough money for this experiment, I'm also not so fortunate to have been born extraordinarily wealthy or have a long-lost relative leave me millions in their will, so I'll be giving ChatGPT a budget.Versatile players. My work takes me from the classroom to content shoots, to around the country giving talks and holding workshops at conferences, to pitching marketing ideas in the boardroom, but on the weekends I lead a double life as a grade-A slob. These clothes will need to be comfortable enough to bum around in and not so precious that I can't spill a little wine on them without freaking out.Having so many specifics makes using one of the AI stylist tools pointless: The in-app shopping features don't allow me to specify what material to avoid or incorporate. So it's time to find out if ChatGPT has fashion sense.Does ChatGPT understand fashion?I started my AI-assisted fashion journey by telling ChatGPT what I was looking for with those specifics, as well as some of the items I already have and notes on color palette. The tool returned with a smattering of suggestions and price points, as well as some picks on where to purchase the items. Screenshot by Rachel Kane/CNET Screenshot by Rachel Kane/CNETThis was a fine start, but plain white tees and versatile cardigans are pretty generic. I decided to try something a little controversial and asked ChatGPT to role play as celebrity stylist Law Roach, whose partnership with Zendaya has resulted in some of the most iconic looks of the last decade. Plus, I just saw Challengers, and Zendaya's chic country club-adjacent outfits have been haunting my dreams.Match points for AINow armed with the outlook of Roach, ChatGPT repeated its suggestions but added more detail, offering styling tips like high-waisted trousers and slightly oversized fits for the cashmere sweaters. It's getting closer to giving me what I want, but there is still the matter of accessories and how the items I already own can work together with these new items. I asked for suggestions on how to pair what I have in my closet with what I'm buying. This is where ChatGPT started to shine. The results of my updated queries not only produced useful and achievable looks to build with my current wardrobe, but also gave me working links for items in the price range that met my criteria. Pretty impressive for a tool that had previously been unreliable most times I tried to use it. Screenshot by Rachel Kane/CNET Screenshot by Rachel Kane/CNETShould you use AI as your stylist? If you've got specific criteria for any shopping endeavor, I'd recommend trying ChatGPT. The tool cut out tons of time I would have dedicated to scouring the web for things that might work from a style standpoint, and it did all the heavy lifting in making sure the items were mostly made from natural fibers. The benefit of having the tool act as a known stylist with a particular point of view was extra helpful in determining how to make certain pieces fit together in an appealing way.As for actually looking like Zendaya in the outfits, well, that's a challenge AI can't help this human overcome. Not yet, anyway.0 Commentarios ·0 Acciones ·43 Views

RFK, Jr., Confirmation Hearing Is Tomorrow. Heres What to Knowwww.scientificamerican.comJanuary 29, 20255 min read4 Things to Know as RFK, Jr., Confirmation Hearing ApproachesSome health professionals have spoken out about President Donald Trumps nomination of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., for Secretary of Health and Human ServicesBy Arthur Allen & KFF Health News Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump's pick for Health and Human Services secretary, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesPresident Donald Trump has nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an environmental lawyer with no formal medical or public health expertise, as secretary of Health and Human Services. Two Senate committees will question Kennedy this week on how his disproven views of science and medicine qualify him to run the $1.7 trillion, 80,000-employee federal health system. Here are four considerations for lawmakers on the Senate Finance and Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committees, which will host Kennedy for questioning on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively:1) Kennedys unconventional health claims. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. For decades, Kennedy has advocated for health-related ideas that are scientifically disproven or controversial. He created and was paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by Childrens Health Defense, a group that champions the false idea that vaccines cause autism and other chronic diseases and has sued to take vaccines off the market. Kennedy has said covid vaccines are the deadliest in history, antidepressants lead children to commit mass shootings, environmental contaminants may cause people to become trans, and HIV is not the only cause of AIDS. He also pushes the use of products that regulators consider dangerous, such as raw milk, and for broader use of some medicines, such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, to treat conditions without FDA approval. He says public health agencies oppose their use only because of regulatory capture by big drug and food interests. He believes you can avoid disease if you have a healthy immune system. He sees vaccines and antibiotics as toxins, said Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. Top Trump health nominees Kennedy, Marty Makary for FDA commissioner, Jay Bhattacharya for National Institutes of Health director, and former U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director are generally disdainful of the agencies theyll be leading, Offit said. They think they are going to go into office, pull back the curtain, find all this bad stuff, and reveal it to the American public, he said.During a measles epidemic in 2019 and 2020 that killed 83 people, mostly children, in Samoa, Kennedy, as chairman of Childrens Health Defense, warned the countrys prime minister against measles vaccination. This behavior alone is disqualifying for an HHS nominee, said Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association.Equally problematic, in Benjamins view, was Kennedys legal effort in 2021 to get the covid vaccine pulled from the market. He cant say hes not anti-vax, Benjamin said. He wasnt following the evidence.A Kennedy spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.2) Kennedys chances appear good, despite opposition.Kennedys nomination has emerged in a moment when Trump is on a roll and mistrust of public health and medical authority in the wake of the pandemic has created an opening for people with unorthodox views of science to seize the reins of the countrys health system. After former Fox News personality Pete Hegseth was confirmed as Defense secretary last week despite his controversial qualifications for the job and stark warnings from former top military brass, many Washington observers think RFK Jr. is going to be hard to defeat. In a meeting on the Hill with Democratic senators and their aides last week, Offit said, the feeling was that he would likely be confirmed.Trump has demanded that Republican senators line up behind his nominees and has so far succeeded. Its thought that Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine could oppose Kennedy, based on their opposition to Hegseth. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the other Hegseth nay vote, is a polio survivor who has not spoken publicly about Kennedy but said in December that opposing proven cures was dangerous. Other senators whose Kennedy votes are said to be in question include Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), the HELP Committee chair, a physician who gave a lukewarm response after meeting Kennedy.Others have reported that Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who shares Kennedys concern with the spread of obesity and chronic illness, and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), who attended law school with Kennedy, might vote for him. Neither senators office responded to a request for comment. Advancing American Freedom, a conservative advocacy group founded by former Vice President Mike Pence, has fought Kennedys nomination with a major ad buy.3) The hearings are going to be heated.Democratic senators are coming with plenty of ammunition. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) sent Kennedy a 34-page letter containing 175 questions on everything from his anti-vaccine statements and actions to his waffling positions on abortion to his stances on Medicare, drug prices, and the cause of AIDS.While public health and medical groups did not coordinate with Pences conservative organization, questions about Kennedys earlier stance in support of abortion rights could raise hackles on the GOP side of the aisle. Although his group is far from Pence on reproductive rights, Benjamin said, if it helps derail him, I hope some senators are listening to Pence. Any shelter in a storm. The hearings are going to be very difficult for him because hes told a web of untruths as hes marched across the offices, said Leslie Dach, executive chair of Protect Our Care, a Democratic-aligned advocacy group.Public opinion reflects leeriness of Kennedy on health, though not excessively. In a poll released Tuesday by KFF, 43% of respondents said they trusted him to make the right health recommendations. About 81% of Republicans in the poll said they trusted Kennedy almost as many as trust their own doctor.4) What happens if Kennedy takes office. At the NIH, FDA, and other federal health agencies, nervous scientists speak of early retirement or jumping to industry should Kennedy and his agency heads take office. The pharmaceutical industry has kept quiet on the nomination, as has the American Medical Association. Many patient advocacy groups are worried, but wary of creating friction with an administration they cant ignore or defeat.Kennedys comments on AIDS suggesting that gay mens use of stimulants, rather than the HIV virus, were its cause are troubling to Carl Schmid, executive director of the HIV+Hepatitis Policy Institute. But I dont know if hes going to get confirmed or not, he said. If he does, we look forward to working with him and educating him.At the J.P. Morgan Healthcare conference earlier this month, Emma Walmsley, CEO of GSK, a leading vaccine maker, said shed wait and see what the facts are before predicting what Kennedy would do. Vaccines, she noted, are not our biggest business.GSK is one of a handful of vaccine makers remaining on the U.S. market. That number could shrink further if the Trump administration and Congress undo a 1986 law that provided legal protection for vaccine makers as Kennedy has advocated.KFF Health News, formerly known as Kaiser Health News (KHN), is a national newsroom that produces in-depth journalism about health issues and is one of the core operating programs at KFF the independent source for health policy research, polling, and journalism.0 Commentarios ·0 Acciones ·28 Views
