• This quantum computer built on server racks paves the way to bigger machines
    www.technologyreview.com
A Canadian startup called Xanadu has built a new quantum computer it says can be easily scaled up to achieve the computational power needed to tackle scientific challenges ranging from drug discovery to more energy-efficient machine learning.Aurora is a photonic quantum computer, which means it crunches numbers using photonic qubitsinformation encoded in light. In practice, this means combining and recombining laser beams on multiple chips using lenses, fibers, and other optics according to an algorithm. Xanadus computer is designed in such a way that the answer to an algorithm it executes corresponds to the final number of photons in each laser beam. This approach differs from one used by Google and IBM, which involves encoding information in properties of superconducting circuits.Aurora has a modular design that consists of four similar units, each installed in a standard server rack that is slightly taller and wider than the average human. To make a useful quantum computer, you copy and paste a thousand of these things and network them together, says Christian Weedbrook, the CEO and founder of the company.Ultimately, Xanadu envisions a quantum computer as a specialized data center, consisting of rows upon rows of these servers. This contrasts with the industrys earlier conception of a specialized chip within a supercomputer, much like a GPU.But this work, which the company published last week in Nature, is just a first step toward that vision. Aurora used 35 chips to construct a total of 12 quantum bits, or qubits. Any useful applications of quantum computing proposed to date will require at least thousands of qubits, or possibly a million. By comparison, Googles quantum computer Willow, which debuted last year, has 105 qubits (all built on a single chip), and IBMs Condor has 1,121.Devesh Tiwari, a quantum computing researcher at Northeastern University, describes Xanadus progress in an analogy with building a hotel. They have built a room, and Im sure they can build multiple rooms, he says. But I dont know if they can build it floor by floor.Still, he says, the work is very promising.Xanadus 12 qubits may seem like a paltry number next to IBMs 1,121, but Tiwari says this doesnt mean that quantum computers based on photonics are running behind. In his opinion, the number of qubits reflects the amount of investment more than it does the technologys promise.Photonic quantum computers offer several design advantages. The qubits are less sensitive to environmental noise, says Tiwari, which makes it easier to get them to retain information for longer. It is also relatively straightforward to connect photonic quantum computers via conventional fiber optics, because they already use light to encode information. Networking quantum computers together is key to the industrys vision of a quantum internet where different quantum devices talk to each other. Auroras servers also dont need to be kept as cool as superconducting quantum computers, says Weedbrook, so they dont require as much cryogenic technology. The server racks operate at room temperature, although photon-counting detectors still need to be cryogenically cooled in another room.Xanadu is not the only company pursuing photonic quantum computers; others include PsiQuantum in the US and Quandela in France. Other groups are using materials like neutral atoms and ions to construct their quantum systems. From a technical standpoint, Tiwari suspects, no single qubit type will ever be the winner, but its likely that certain qubits will be better for specific applications. Photonic quantum computers, for example, are particularly well suited to Gaussian boson sampling, an algorithm that could be useful for quickly solving graph problems. I really want more people to be looking at photonic quantum computers, he says. He has studied quantum computers with multiple qubit types, including photons and superconducting qubits, and is not affiliated with a company.Isaac Kim, a physicist at the University of California, Davis, points out that Xanadu has not demonstrated the error correction ability many experts think a quantum computer will need in order to do any useful task, given that information stored in a quantum computer is notoriously fragile.Weedbrook, however, says Xanadus next goal is to improve the quality of the photons in the computer, which will ease the error correction requirements. When you send lasers through a medium, whether its free space, chips, or fiber optics, not all the information makes it from the start to the finish, he says. So youre actually losing light and therefore losing information. The company is working to reduce this loss, which means fewer errors in the first place.Xanadu aims to build a quantum data center, with thousands of servers containing a million qubits, in 2029.

  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Has Crossed 4 Million Players
    gamingbolt.com
The Indiana JonesIP has taken a beating in recent years, but though its recent efforts in the film space have largely failed, in the games industry, it seems to have taken a great stride forward. MachineGames, Bethesda, and Xbox released Indiana Jones and the Great Circlein December, and the action-adventure title is seemingly enjoying a flying start.Thats as per Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who revealed in the companys recent quarterly fiscal briefing that in addition to the widespread critical acclaim that it enjoyed,Indiana Jones and the Great Circlehas also been played by over 4 million players to date.We saw rave reviews of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which has already been played by more than 4 million people, he said.During its launch week,The Great Circlewas the second-best selling title in the United States, so its success doesnt come as a shock. Lucasfilm Games has already broached the idea of sequels, and leaks have claimed that follow-ups are indeed in the works. In our review of the game, we awarded it a score of 9/10, saying, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle captures its source materials vibe down to a T, delivering an authentic, swashbuckling Indiana Jones adventure that can stand toe-to-toe with the original trilogy, while strong level design, compelling exploration, smartly designed puzzles, and enjoyable stealth and combat also combine in a well-crafted gameplay experience that might just be MachineGames best outing to date. Read the full review through here.Indiana Jones and the Great Circleis available on Xbox Series X/S and PC, and releases for PS5 this Spring.

  • Several PlayStation PC Titles Are Making PSN Account Linking Optional
    gamingbolt.com
When Sony first introduced mandatory PSN account linking for its PC releases last year, it instantly proved to be a controversial decision, mildly put. Since then, the company has stuck by that requirement with each new release on the platform, though going forward, itll be making some changes that PC players are sure to appreciate.Sony has announced that it is removing mandatory PSN account linking in select titles on the platform. Specifically,Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, God of War Ragnarok,Marvels Spider-Man 2,the upcomingThe Last of Us Part 2 Remastered(contrary to a recent confirmation) will no longer need PSN accounts for those who wish to play them on PC.Instead, those who do link their accounts will get free, bonus in-game rewards. InThe Last of Us Part 2,that will include an in-game skin for Ellie based on Naughty Dogs upcoming sci-fi titleIntergalactic. You can view the fill list of rewards for each game below.Whether we can expect Sony to take a similar approach with all future releases remains to be seen, but one would certainly hope that thats the case, given how unpopular the PSN account linking requirements have been with the vast majority of PC players thus far.Marvels Spider-Man 2launches for PC on January 30.The Last of Us Part 2 Remasteredwill follow on April 3. Make sure to check out the formers system requirements and platform-specific features.

  • When a House Painter Failed to Assassinate President Andrew Jackson, It Was the First Such Attempt in U.S. Presidential History
    www.smithsonianmag.com
Andrew Jacksonwas exiting the U.S. Capitols East Portico when the English-born Lawrence stepped forward from behind a pillar, pulled a derringer single-shot pistol from his jacket, and fired at the president. Public domain via Wikimedia CommonsOn January 30, 1835, unemployed house painter Richard Lawrence tried to change the course of history with an attempt to assassinate then-President Andrew Jackson. That cold and dreary Friday, Jackson had been attending a funeral in Washington, D.C. for South Carolina Representative Warren Davis. Using a walking cane to support his frail frame, Jackson was just exiting the U.S. Capitols East Portico when the English-born Lawrence stepped forward from behind a pillar. He pulled a derringer single-shot pistol from his jacket and fired at the presidentbut though the cap fired, the bullet failed to discharge. So Lawrence pulled out a second pistol andas Jackson rushed at the would-be assassin with his canepulled the trigger again. It was another misfire. At that point, Navy Lieutenant Thomas Gedney tackled Lawrence to the floor, while other spectators including Tennessee Congressman Davy Crockettan eventual legendary frontiersman who later died at the Alamohelped subdue him. Its said that Jackson (who was 67 years old at the time) hit Lawrence a few times with his cane before being rushed to the White House. It was the first known assassination attempt on a U.S. president.Although Lawrence was said to be mild-mannered, those familiar with the house painter said that he had grown increasingly delusional in recent years. Not only did Lawrence believe that the U.S. government owed him a large sum of money, but he was also convinced that he was the rightful king of Englandwith only King Andrew standing in his way.The months following Jacksons attempted assassination played out like a political drama. Was it a conspiracy? Had someone hired a hitman to take out the president? The Jackson Assassination Attempt: Why would a house painter try to kill a president?Watch on Jackson wasnt without enemies. Nearing the seventh year of his two-term presidency, this lawyer from Tennessee by way of South Carolina was known for his fiery temper. He even had a bullet still lodged in his chest, resulting from a duel with attorney Charles Dickinson, whom he had killed in the contest nearly 30 years earlier.Still, Jackson believed the attack was politically motivated, and that rival politician George Poindexterwhose home Lawrence had painted in 1834was behind the attempted assassination. Others suspected Jacksons former vice president, John C. Calhoun, who had defected to Jacksons political opponents and who days before the attempt had said that Jackson was a Caesar who ought to have a Brutus, referring to one of Roman general Julius Caesars main assassins.Despite the conspiracy theories, Lawrence was found not guilty by reason of insanity at his trial in April 1835 after just five minutes of jury deliberation.Lawrences two pistols were examined and found to be loaded correctly and functioning properly. A small arms consulting expert later calculated the odds of both guns failing to be 125,000 to 1.Despite Jacksons narrow escape, it would take years for the federal government to prioritize presidential protection. It took the assassinations of three sitting U.S. presidents (Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield and William McKinley) before the government made safeguarding the president a full-time national priority.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: American History, American Presidents, Andrew Jackson, On This Day in History, Washington, D.C.

  • How Jet Lis Debut Film Saved the Real-Life Shaolin Temple
    www.denofgeek.com
Depicted in countless movies and TV shows, as well as in hip hop lyrics, the Shaolin Temple is a very real place, one of Chinas historic treasures and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Established in 495 CE, the original Shaolin Temple lies in the heart of China and is considered the birthplace of Zen and Kung Fu. But before Jet Li came, it was in ruins. The 20th century was tough on the temple too. In 1928 during the turbulent Republic of China period, the temple was burned down by a warlord named Shi Yousan, who was suspicious of the Shaolin monks. Caused by firearms, the fires burned for 40 days. For a short period in 1941 during the Japanese occupation, it was converted to a secondary school. Then when the communists came, they expropriated 13,171 acres of land from Shaolin, leaving only the temple with only five. But that wasnt the worst. The Cultural Revolution ravaged Shaolin once more, destroying halls, art and pagodas, and disbanding the monks, forcing them back into secular life. By the 1980s, only four monks survived, struggling to hold on to what remained. It was Jet Lis first film, The Shaolin Temple (1982), that brought the nations attention back to Shaolin. The Shaolin Temple was to China what Star Wars was to the West: the years highest-grossing blockbuster in their respective markets and a complete game changer. One of the first films shot on location, it revealed that Shaolin Temple was still standing to Chinas post-Cultural Revolution generation. People flocked to the temple as curious tourists, religious pilgrims, and, of course, as students of Kung Fu. To understand what happened, its important to understand who Jet Li is.Jet Li Takes OffA devout Buddhist, Jet Li is his Western name, given to him because his career took off like a jet. His Chinese name is Li Lianjie. He was the first superstar champion from a newly formed martial art called wushu. China sought to unify its diverse martial arts for competition by creating a new sport called wushu, which combined traditional Chinese martial arts with gymnastics for a sports spectacle. Wushu bid to be an event of the 2008 Beijing Olympics but didnt make the official cut.Jet dominated the early national wushu championships. He captured his first All-Around championship in 1974 before he hit puberty. That shocked the wushu community because the second and third place contenders were well into their 20s. Jet held that national All-Around title for five consecutive years, a competitive record that remains untouched.Lis success earned him a slot on an international friendship team of ambassadors to the U.S. When President Nixon helped open the door to the Peoples Republic of China, the first Chinese friendship ambassadors to visit the USA was the championship ping pong team. This historic cultural bridge is remembered as ping pong diplomacy. The second group of Chinese ambassadors was a wushu team, including Jet. Jet performed wushu for President Nixon and Henry Kissinger on the White House lawn. However, Watergate broke out when the team arrived. That usurped the headlines leaving the wushu ambassadors in its shadow. But that was the American news. In China, there was a different story. Trying to be cute, Nixon asked Jet if he would serve as his personal bodyguard. The 11-year-old Jet quipped back, I dont want to protect any individual. When I grow up, I want to defend my one billion Chinese countrymen! With that, he won the hearts of China, the most populous nation in the world at that time. Its important to understand the distinction. Jet is native Chinese, born in the nations capital city Beijing. Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco as an American, back when birthright citizenship was valid. Jackie Chan was born in Hong Kong when it was under British colonialist rule. But by comparison, Jet was part of a new generation of martial arts stars, born in mainland China. On Location at Shaolin TempleThe Shaolin Temple was a joint China-Hong Kong production. The film retold a classic chapter of Shaolins glorious past when 13 Shaolin monks rescued Li Shinmin. Li later became Emperor Taizhong of the Tang Dynasty (598-649 CE). The episode is depicted in one of surviving murals in White Garment Hall at Shaolin Temple.Alongside Jet were several other leading wushu champions, including Yu Hai, Yu Chenghui, Ji Chunhua, Hu Jianqiang, and Sun Jiankui. Many of them went on to become notable martial arts movie stars in Asia. The film was a showcase of wushu choreography. Even though many of the fight scenes are sped up, the level of skilled choreography remains thrilling. The precision and complexity of the fights, especially the fights with weapons, is what wushu does best. And with the backdrop of the actual Shaolin Temple, the impact of the film upon the martial arts genre is undeniable. The Shaolin Temple had limited distribution internationally, exclusively showing in overseas Chinatown theaters. Nevertheless, the film was a box office success in Asia, spawning two thematic sequels that were also shot at the temple, reuniting Jet with the cast of wushu champions. Everyone was cast in different roles, but the high level of fight choreography before scenic locations was a constant throughout the trilogy. Kids from Shaolin (1984) and Martial Arts of Shaolin (1986) were among the very few movies filmed at Shaolin Temple.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! In 2011, Shaolin was shot on location and was originally promoted as a remake of The Shaolin Temple. It starred Jackie Chan and Yu Hai (of the original The Shaolin Temple) in extended cameos. It also featured Xing Yu, a real-life Shaolin monk who went on to be a star of action cinema. It also had some leading wushu champions like Wu Jing, who is now one of Chinas most bankable actors. However, Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, and Fan Bingbing took the lead roles. While they are all very accomplished actors, they werent martial artists at first, which made this film very different from the original trilogy. Theres been a persistent rumor that Justin Lin will direct a remake, in 3D no less, but that has yet to be greenlighted. The Rebirth of Shaolin TempleWith The Shaolin Temple, Jet Li helped usher in a torrent of tourists and boosted the economy with martial arts. Dozens of massive private martial arts schools rose up near the real Shaolin Temple, run by former monks or secular masters. The community around Shaolin Temple had been practicing Shaolin Kung Fu for generations. The largest private institution, Shaolin Taguo Martial Arts School, has had up to 36,000 live-in fulltime students. Most of these students are children who also receive a complete education. In China, a degree in martial arts is marketable both as a coach or in enforcement. The influx of tourism and the martial economy has allowed Shaolin Temple to rebuild and restore. Shaolin now has several subsidiary temples within China and dozens of international representatives all over the world. An entire generation of mainland Chinese martial arts masters will cite The Shaolin Temple as their inspiration to take up the practice. Last year, Shaolin hosted the first global Shaolin Kung Fu Games at the temple which drew over 20,000 attendees from around the globe. The temple also holds summits on Zen and traditional Chinese medicine, as well as academic symposiums. After inspiring so many movies, its karma that Shaolin Temple would have a movie bring it into modern times. And Jet Li was the vehicle of that rebirth.

  • Yellowstone Is So Much More Than Cowboy Hats and Guns. Heres Why You Should Watch
    www.denofgeek.com
Paramounts unstoppable juggernaut of a cowboy-soap opera, Yellowstone, could not appear to be more American if the cattle featured within the show were branded with stars and stripes. British audiences may be hesitant to jump into a show seemingly solely about rich white Americans in buckskin hats driving all-terrain trucks around their ranches, but with the first four of its five seasons now on Netflix UK (its been on Paramount+ UK since 2022 but this is the bigger debut), were here to assure you that Yellowstone offers so much more than its neo-Western appearance indicates.Heres why it deserves to be your next streaming binge.Shakespearean Family DynamicsThe Dutton family, Montanas largest landowners, struggle as their ranch is being attacked from all directions. Politicians, massive developing conglomerates and First Nations communities all want to either reclaim or purloin a piece of the ranch. Yet somehow, co-creator Taylor Sheridan and his writing team made the Duttons seem small and relatable. Much like Breaking Bad or Peaky Blinders, its not about the rich getting richer, its about the Duttons maintaining the ranch that their family has bled for, and holding onto a three-generation dynasty. The major strength of Yellowstone is the melodramatic relationship within the family. Like Succession, archetypal Shakespearean themes from King Lear and Hamlet play out against a contemporary backdrop. Patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) piles the pressure and expectations onto his children which creates recognisable and intriguing tension between siblings, most notably between only-daughter, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley).John is not a perfect father, or even a good father. He has his own baggage and things to atone for with all his children, most notably his youngest son Kayce (Luke Grimes), but for many viewers theres something very relatable about that. Regardless of how much land they own, or the six-figure salaries some of the Duttons are raking in, a family with a tremendous amount of love yet who also occasionally want to kill each other, makes for a strangely cathartic watch.A Balanced Political ApproachYellowstone could have easily been a glorified celebration of everything a global audience could hate about stereotypical America violence, the divide in wealth, and especially gun culture. At times, that is certainly a focus. But as in so many of Sheridans works, he makes a valiant effort to forge storylines that represent important and well-rounded issues. In essence, he leaves politics aside, and the shows superb writing reminds people that Sheridans Academy Award nomination for 2017s Hell Or High Water was no fluke. At the forefront of Yellowstone is the marginalization of First Nations communities including the Crow Nation and Lakota people. As a Canadian, these storylines held a particular resonance for me as Canada is similarly only beginning to scratch the surface on the horrific history associated with colonization and the mistreatment of our First Nations people. Viewers around the world though, will surely find their own parallels, and gain just as much from these tragic, compelling and educational stories. Theyre crucial for the entire world to learn about, and the show should be applauded for its efforts in that regard.Yellowstone portrays First Nations people in their struggle to reclaim their land, and shows them as equals and often partners with the Dutton family, in a quest to do whats right for the land and to ensure the future of both of their lineages. Those storylines blend beautifully with the testosterone-driven cowboy aesthetic to give the show a unique combination of storylines.Beth Dutton& Co.Taylor Sheridan has also become known for writing some of the strongest female characters on television today. Look no further than Lioness with Zoe Saldaa and its cast of kick-ass militaristic women. In Yellowstone, and subsequently its prequels 1883 and 1923, Sheridan made a point of creating an entire bloodline of women who dont take crap from anyone. Most notably, theres Beth Dutton. Beth is often synonymous with another word that begins with B, and that is part of the draw of the character. She can be polarizing. She can often be too much, or mean-spirited, or spiteful, but one thing she never is: weak.Sheridan also takes care to show the specific struggle of First Nations women. Even a character like Monica (Kelsey Asbille), whom many Yellowstone fans consider to be one of the less successful, deals with the real-world topic of the disproportionate amount of crime perpetuated on First Nations women. Yellowstone subverts Cowboy-genre expectations by ensuring that its female characters arent there only in support of male action, but have their own plights and their own strength. The Beauty of MontanaIf this is a first-time watch, just sit back and embrace the splendour and culture of this fictional Montana. There is no doubt that Sheridan and the showrunners are in love with the purple mountains majesty that is America, and use the landscape as a secondary character.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! While the chosen country music artist of the week serenades the audience with homespun melancholia, or an energizing country music train beat, Yellowstone uses epic establishing shots to transport viewers to some of the most breathtaking parts of Big Sky Country, which is a welcome departure from so many other shows on television. Not only does it demonstrate to audiences what the Duttons are fighting for, but it also shows what will happen to spots of land like this if corporate America gets its wish.Yellowstone seasons one to four are streaming now on Netflix UK.
