Security hallucinations Report: DeepSeeks chat histories and internal data were publicly exposed Wiz researchers found many similarities to OpenAI with their escalated access. Kevin Purdy Jan 30, 2025 2:49 pm | 13 Credit: Getty Images Credit: Getty Images Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreA cloud security firm found a publicly accessible, fully controllable database belonging to DeepSeek, the Chinese firm that has recently shaken up the AI world, "within minutes" of examining DeepSeek's security, according to a blog post by Wiz.An analytical ClickHouse database tied to DeepSeek, "completely open and unauthenticated," contained more than 1 million instances of "chat history, backend data, and sensitive information, including log streams, API secrets, and operational details," according to Wiz. An open web interface also allowed for full database control and privilege escalation, with internal API endpoints and keys available through the interface and common URL parameters."While much of the attention around AI security is focused on futuristic threats, the real dangers often come from basic riskslike accidental external exposure of databases," writes Gal Nagli at Wiz's blog. "As organizations rush to adopt AI tools and services from a growing number of startups and providers, its essential to remember that by doing so, were entrusting these companies with sensitive data. The rapid pace of adoption often leads to overlooking security, but protecting customer data must remain the top priority."Ars has contacted DeepSeek for comment and will update this post with any response. Wiz noted that it did not receive a response from DeepSeek regarding its findings, but after contacting every DeepSeek email and LinkedIn profile Wiz could find on Wednesday, the company protected the databases Wiz had previously accessed within half an hour. The fact that mistakes happen is correct, but this is a dramatic mistake, because the effort level is very low and the access level that we got is very high, Ami Luttwak, CTO of Wiz, said to WIRED. I would say that it means that the service is not mature to be used with any sensitive data at all.DeepSeek's R1 model, a freely available simulated reasoning model that DeepSeek and some testers believe matches OpenAI's o1 model in performance, has sparked a blaze of volatility in the tech and AI markets. DeepSeek purportedly runs at a fraction of the cost of o1, at least on DeepSeek's servers. The seemingly drastically reduced power needed to run and train R1 also rocked power company stock prices. Ars' Kyle Orland found R1 impressive, given its seemingly sudden arrival and smaller scale, but noted some deficiencies in comparison with OpenAI models.OpenAI told the Financial Times that it believed DeepSeek had used OpenAI outputs to train its R1 model, in a practice known as distillation. Such training violates OpenAI's terms of service, and the firm told Ars it would work with the US government to protect its model. In examining DeepSeek's systems, Wiz researchers told WIRED, they found numerous structural similarities to OpenAI, seemingly so that customers could transition from that firm to DeepSeek.Kevin PurdySenior Technology ReporterKevin PurdySenior Technology Reporter Kevin is a senior technology reporter at Ars Technica, covering open-source software, PC gaming, home automation, repairability, e-bikes, and tech history. • Tidal Wave of Trump Policy Changes Comes for the Tech Space
    www.informationweek.com
Within his first week in office, President Trump signed a flood of wide-ranging executive orders and took actions that have significant implications for the technology industry. The sheer volume of change, along with the freezing and unfreezing of federal funding, sparked much confusion. What are some of the biggest tech policy changes coming from the current administration, and what could they mean for the industry?A New AI OrderTrump voiced plans to repeal Bidens executive order on AI, arguing that it stifles innovation, and swiftly followed through. He signed an executive order -- Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence -- and also announced plans for Stargate, a $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative. The Stargate initiative is interesting as it aligns several large players in the space into a single entity to help push initiatives, Max Shier, vice president and CISO at Optiv, a cybersecurity advisory services company, tells InformationWeek via email. While those moves have big possibilities for the AI space, it will likely take time to see the effects. Most of the executives that I'm talking to now don't feel like there's a huge impact, at least right now. And they're continuing to make investments and pursue solutions as they were in Q4 or second half of last year, and in fact investing, even more in those solutions from an AI perspective, Bill Farmer, lead of the aerospace, defense, and government services investment banking team and managing director at Brown Gibbons Lang & Company, an investment bank and financial advisory firm, tells InformationWeek.Related:With Chinese startup DeepSeek making strides, competition in the global race for AI market dominance is heating up. But there are still concerns over risk in the AI space. Several industry and consumer groups signed a letter calling for the White House to retain AI testing and transparency rules, CNBC reports. The removal of guardrails and oversight can be negative if tech companies are allowed to do whatever they want without ethical considerations guiding their conscience, says Shier.Cybersecurity ChangesThe Trump administration fired the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agencys (CISA) Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB). The CSRB was investigating China-state backed APT group Salt Typhoon, the group responsible for a massive breach of US telecom companies.I could also see potentially a pullback in CISAs authority and role. Their budget has been increasing year over year. At a minimum, I think they're going to take a hard look at what those programs are and what that spending looks like, says Deniece Peterson, senior director of federal market analysis at Deltek, an enterprise software and information solutions company.Related:During his campaign, Trump was vocal about his intentions to be tough on China, but he seems to be taking a more nuanced approach now that he has taken office, AP News reports. What that means for the federal governments approach to cyber threats from China remains unclear.Peterson points out that Trump has established the Presidents Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). That may incorporate some of those [cybersecurity] activities. We just don't know yet, she says.DOGE and Government SpendingThe Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is going to focus on modernizing federal technology and software to maximize efficiency and productivity, according to the executive order establishing the new department.Particularly the government services folks are extremely nervous about DOGE [it is] looking at reducing government spending, looking at reducing services, looking at reducing contractors, Farmer points out.Related:Trump has also spoken about rescoping and even eliminating entire federal departments. How that will actually play out under this administration remains to be seen, but it could result in workforce reductions. The Trump administration is going to be looking at automation of certain functions, says Peterson.Workforce reductions and increased automation could mean opportunities for IT companies to vie for government contracts. IT contractors are looking at this is about how can they support this new kind of environment and shift, Peterson adds.A Step Back from RegulationTrump signed an executive order placing a regulatory freeze on federal agencies. This administration has made clear its plans for deregulation. His moves are not unexpected. He was very clear on what he wanted to achieve in the tech space and that is less restrictions on tech companies and more innovation, says Shier. One potential result of a lighter-touch approach to regulation could be more M&A activity in the tech industry.I think a lot of deals were shelved in the last three or four years that had the potential to be significant transactions but because of the regulatory risk, folks decided not to pursue those, says Farmer. That's changed now. At least optically, people feel like there's a higher chance that deals could get through.Early DaysIt is still early days for the second Trump administration. Many of his executive orders are facing legal pushback, and the impact of the presidents actions are not readily apparent in many cases. It's hard to figure out how the executive orders to date impact spending because there's been a lot of confusion. There's a lack of clarity on what the scope is, what kind of spending these things apply to, says Peterson.Technology industry stakeholders will have to watch how these initial policy changes play out and prepare for the possibility of more.I will be watching whether they continue down the path of de-regulation and how it affects the use and consumption of tech, including AI and privacy, says Shier. In the cybersecurity space, the fate of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program is also something to watch. CMMC has seen a significant amount of pushback by companies doing business with the government as they state it is too expensive to implement and would reduce the competition in the government contractor space, says Shier.Technology leaders will be keeping a close eye on federal tech policy changes that have the possibility to reshape national security, the government contractor space, and the private sector.

  • I got laid off from my tech job after 6 years. Now, I'm juggling being a stay-at-home mom while job-searching, and it's complicated.
    www.businessinsider.com
After working at my tech job for six years, I was laid off. Now, I'm a stay-at-home mom, and I'm taking care of my daughter while on the job hunt. It's complicated, and I'm not sure which part of my life is keeping me busier. My daughter had been chugging milk like a high school boy after football practice, so I consulted the "experts" on the proper amount for an 18-month-old. I typically rely on our pediatrician and my mother for the best toddler-rearing advice, but for something as trivial as this, I went straight to the sage elders known as mommy bloggers. About 20 ounces per day, one of them said. Good enough for me.I had my answer, but couldn't help scrolling into the quicksand of the other posts, particularly one with the headline "How to Survive as a SAHM." I figured SAHM stood for something horrible, like Scabies After Hemorrhaging Mastitis, but after Googling learned it meant stay-at-home mom. Oh, that? Easy. There is an acronym for everything in parenting LO (little one), BLW (baby-led weaning), SEH (so exhausted, help) but I'd been too busy to keep track of them all. I had a job. A job in tech I'd had for six years. A job I did well but wouldn't have said I was particularly passionate about, which is fortunate, considering one morning last June, I was promptly let go.I'm now juggling my job search with being a stay-at-home momI have been applying and interviewing ever since, with varying degrees of failure the most spectacular of which have come after getting to the final round with four different companies. I shouldn't be surprised. The economy is at a tipping point, egg prices are high, and the world is burning, but I figured I'd be exempt from reality. Instead, six months later, I'm still in the grind, not just in trying to secure an income, but in full-time parenting my toddler. SAHM-ing.Previously, my husband and I had been juggling watching her and working at the same time, which wasn't hard when she was young and when, for a decent portion of that time, he'd been laid off, too, applying, interviewing, and SAHDad-ing.Now it's my turn. I wake up early and do a sun salutation in the form of trolling LinkedIn and applying to anything I am qualified for, which is plenty I have 10+ years of experience under my belt, which I've said approximately four thousand times, every time while smiling! When my daughter wakes up, I feed her, change her, play with her, and clean the house. The busy mom in the commercials with the laundry basket? That is me. But that woman isn't also editing her rsum and networking with strangers.I'm not sure which is keeping me busierWhen my daughter has her N (nap), I furiously put on mascara and rehearse my worth as an employee and subsequent human for interviews I've conveniently scheduled while she's D (down). When she's awake, I do more feeding, playing, and cooking, more tired than I was earlier, but slightly more attractive. Soon enough, it's her bedtime and then ours, before we wake up, wash, and repeat. It's hard not to think I would have been hired by now if I had more time to job search. It's also hard not to think I would enjoy staying at home more if I wasn't spending so much time job searching.Like most people, it's less that I want a job, and more that I need one. And I'd like a good one, because of said egg prices. Baking is my weekly non-negotiable, and my daughter and I do it together. She bangs the rolling pin, throws flour, and stirs every mixture for the 0.5 seconds I allow. We listen to music and dance. The floor gets filthy. I kiss her round cheeks that taste like butter.I want this season of life to pass, to get easier. And I don't. The constant rejection from HR people is hard right now, but it's easier to swallow when I have someone who needs me more than their tech companies ever will. Someone who wants me regardless of my experience building go-to-market programs, or my Salesforce expertise, or my (incredible, I will say) ability to work in cross-functional teams. She needs me to be her SAHM. Easy.

  • New digital library lets you read thousands of retro gaming magazines for free
    metro.co.uk
You could easily spend hours upon hours going through it all (VGHF)The Video Game History Foundation has launched a digital archive containing hundreds of thousands of gaming documents, allowing anyone to be a games historian.Preservation within the gaming space has become a popular talking point in recent years, as gaming magazines are pulled from shelves, the physical market slowly dies out, and digital marketplaces shut down, rendering some games completely unplayable. The Video Game History Foundation is one organisation trying to preserve the games industrys history and has collected a staggering number of materials, including development documents, gaming magazines, and other such paraphernalia.Since 2017, the organisation has been working to make the materials more widely available to the public, with a digital library. And while its not quite finished, an early access version of that library has at last gone live.Said library can be visited via this link, although at the time of writing its suffering from timeout errors due to high demand. The library currently offers a curated selection of over 30,000 files, which includes over 1,500 fully searchable and out-of-print gaming magazines, such as issues of Official Sega Magazine and the recently defunct Play magazine. If you never got to attend E3, you can experience it vicariously through a collection of old guidebooks that provide insight into its first 12 years in operation. One of the VGHFs personal highlights is a collection of materials by producer Mark Flitman, who worked on a number of games across studios like Konami and Acclaim throughout the 90s and 00s.The whole thing is essentially a treasure trove for preservationists and retro game enthusiasts, and the VGHF hopes its digital library will allow anyone to be a video game historian.More TrendingOur library is for anyone who wants to study video game history whether youre a scholar who wants to supplement your academic resources, or a YouTuber making a video about the story of your favourite game. We think this is the start of something that will change how people study the history of video games, reads a post on the VGHF website. The VGHF fully intends to upload more materials to the archive, but the one downside is that it cant share any of the out-of-print games it has collected. US copyright law prevents it from sharing digital access to such titles.Last year, the VGHF tried to convince the US Copyright Office to make an exemption, so researchers wouldnt have to travel to the organisations premises just to access these games. It ultimately failed, but the VGHFs website says it is fighting to change this law in coordination with the software preservation community. • Books Written Without AI Can Now Receive New Human Authored Certification
    gizmodo.com
By Thomas Maxwell Published January 30, 2025 | Comments (3) | The Authors Guild is creating a new certification for books that have been written without the use of AI. Joel Saget/Contributor The Authors Guild, one of the largest associations of writers in America, is launching a new project to certify books that have been written by a human rather than a machine. The new Human Authored certification will help authors distinguish their work and let readers know what they are readingand paying foris something that was actually produced with genuine effort and creativity. Because who wants to waste their limited time reading a book the author did not put any care into? The new certification is limited to members of the Authors Guild, but the association says it will expand to non-Guild members in the future. Anyone will be able to visit a public database to see books that have been given human certification. To qualify, books must be almost entirely written by humans, with a small exception for the use of AI-powered grammar tools like Grammarly. This is good in the sense that readers ought to know they are not about to read soulless, generated slop. At the same time, the new certification assumes that AI-generated content will be the default going forward, which feels depressing. It is sad that some people believe AI could be as good, if not better, than humans at creating works of art. Generative AI cannot relate to people or produce original thoughtsit scrapes the web for information already out there and parrots what it has learned from others. Similar to an actual parrot reciting words it has heard before, it does not feel like a chatbots output has any soul. One cannot relate to a bot that does not have its own lived experiences to share. But out of financial motivation or sheer laziness, we have already seen Amazon inundated with AI-generated books, and recently a popular romance writer was caught using AI when they inadvertently left chatbot output in a newly published book. AI is coming to books whether we like it or not. Books with AI should be the ones that have to identify themselves, but it is probably a lot easier to get human authors to sign up for labeling their books, rather than trying to go to every book publisher and harangue them into identifying what within their libraries is AI-generated.Anyone who has been on X or LinkedIn recently has surely seen the flood of generic content that has flooded those platforms. The content often has a similar style and structure signaling it has been generated by one of the more popular AI models, and contributes nothing new to the conversation. Comments such as, The rise of generative AI raises serious questions about the future of labor that should be considered are vacuous and contribute nothing new to the conversation. At a time when there is immense anxiety over the possibility of CEOs using AI to cheaply replace workers (even if it is not as good), particularly in white-collar fields, there is a belief that innate human creativity will become more important than ever. Proponents of AI say that it can help make people more efficient, but ultimately a human will need to remain in the loop to imbue work with a soul that only a human can provide. Similar to handmade, artisan crafts, people will be willing to pay a premium for creative works that have been made by hand, or so the thinking goes. The U.S. Copyright Office issued guidance this month that works created solely using generative AI cannot be copyrighted, because the author does not have much control over the outputs of typical AI models. No matter how many times a prompt is revised and resubmitted, the final output reflects the users acceptance of the AI systems interpretation, rather than authorship of the expression it contains, a report from the office says. Human-created works with AI elements can still be copyrighted as a whole, like a comic strip that uses AI to generate some elements, but any aspects of the work that were created using AI will not be protected under the new guidance. Copyright is supposed to protect original works from a person and reward them for putting effort into making it; if a bot does all the work, a human did not really make it at all. The Human Authored initiative isnt about rejecting technology its about creating transparency, acknowledging the readers desire for human connection, and celebrating the uniquely human elements of storytelling, guild CEO Mary Rasenberger said in a statement to The Verge.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By AJ Dellinger Published January 29, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published January 28, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published January 28, 2025 By Todd Feathers Published January 28, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published January 24, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published January 24, 2025

  • Vinny Thomas Almost Hilariously Messed Up One Bit of His Ahsoka Appearance
    gizmodo.com
One of the most surprising moments early on inAhsoka wasntStar Wars nerd-bait like the canonization of the E-Wing or even the surprise appearance of Clancy Brown reprising hisStar Wars Rebels rolebut instead a familiar viral face showing up in the form of comedian Vinny Thomas. For Thomas, the moment was a dream come true for the most part, outside of one flub in the spur of the moment. Reflecting on his appearance in theStar Wars series with Polygon, Thomaswho played an older version of Jai Kell, a minor character from Star Wars Rebels who formerly trained at Lothals Imperial Youth academyrevealed that director Dave Filoni asked him to have a little fun with his lines. At one point, Daves like, Hey, how about you improvise a little line here? He was like, You improvise, right? And I was like, Deadass. Of course I improvise. Dont ever ask me that. Of course I improvise,' Thomas added, before revealing that his jitters over being on a Star Wars set led to him coming up with pretty much the one line he couldnt use. I was so nervous, and the line I improvised was: How on Earth?, Thomas revealed. And I didnt even realize it at first, but How on Earth? came out of my mouth, and a second afterwards my eyes went huge and I stopped and Dave was like, Can we cut for a second? He comes up and he is like, Maybe dont say Earth. You know, galaxy far, far away. And Clancy [Brown]s cracking up. Hes, like, beside himself. Im humiliated because Ive never done anything like this. Its like 40-foot-tall blue screens. You have to wear cloaks when you walk out of your trailer because nerds are flying drones over the set to try to see whos there. Of course, this wouldve been far from the first time a real-world idiom wouldve made it intoStar Warseveryone still argues every once in a while about Han threatening to see the Rebel officer who tells him his tauntaun will freeze inEmpire Strikes Back in hellbut of all the ones for Thomas to come up with on the spot, How on Earth is a pretty hilarious one to realize you cant use here. Presumably compared to our mono-planet culture, the denizens of the galaxy far, far away dont have a centralized location they can use to express disbeliefHow on Coruscant> would probably mean very little to someone whos spent their entire life on an Outer Rim planet like Lothal. Does everyone just use their homeworld? Do they pick the most prominent planetoid in a system? Does it even mean anything any more if the galaxy has a zillion different regional interpretations of one similar idiom? Well be left to ponder, while Thomas will presumably be left to think about being momentarily mortified (in a funny way, at least) about his time in the galaxy far, far away. Want more io9 news? Leonardo FinottiText description provided by the architects. The Museu de Arte de So Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) is going through a historic moment in its trajectory with the expansion that will culminate in the new Pietro Maria Bardi building. This project represents the museum's biggest physical leap since its installation in the iconic Avenida Paulista headquarters in 1968, designed by Lina Bo Bardi. The METRO Arquitetos Associados firm led by Martin Corullon and Gustavo Cedroni is responsible for the architectural design. This collaboration continues the longstanding relationship between METRO and MASP, which began in 2015 and has already resulted in significant interventions in the original building, such as the return of the glass easels, redesigned from the museum's original exhibition system.Save this picture!Save this picture!Expansion and New ArchitectureWith 14 floors and an additional 7,821 m, the new building will increase MASP's exhibition capacity by 66%. The design respects the scale and language of Lina Bo Bardi's building and avoids competing with its monumentality. The volume consists of a rectangular prism on a transparent base, which preserves visual continuity with MASP's famous "free span".Save this picture! One of the main differentials of the building is the cladding in perforated and pleated metal sheets, a solution that controls the incidence of natural light and reduces internal heating. This metal faade works as a protective "skin", reducing the thermal load and increasing the buildings energy efficiency, relieving the air conditioning system. In addition to its technical virtues, the innovative metal faade, by enveloping the entire construction, produces a pure and regular volumetry, in dialogue with the building designed by Lina Bo Bardi, reinforcing the functional and symbolic character of the expansion.Save this picture!Connection and FunctionalityInspired by the typologies of vertical museums like those in New York, the Pietro Maria Bardi building incorporates a circulation system that leads visitors to routes from top to bottom, using elevators and stairs. The stairs, in addition to functioning as escape routes, were designed to be pleasant spaces, with windows that allow natural light to enter and fireproof glass, avoiding the feeling of enclosure and turning them into areas for public circulation.Save this picture! The project includes an underpass that will connect MASP to the new building, facilitating the functional integration between the two buildings and optimizing the flow of the public and the transportation of works of art. In addition, the ticket office will be transferred to the basement of the Pietro Maria Bardi building, returning the "free span" to its original role as a public space, according to the ideal defended by Lina Bo Bardi.Save this picture!"The expansion project was designed in a way that complements Lina's building, creating an architectural ensemble that works as a single organism, and not just an addition of areas," defines Martin Corullon. By incorporating docks for loading and unloading works of art and creating a new air conditioning center, which serves both buildings, the entire ensemble starts to work as a large integrated equipment.Save this picture!Resignification and RetrofittingThe Pietro Maria Bardi building is the result of a careful process of resignification. Taking advantage of pre-existing structures a building from the 1940s that had undergone an intervention in 2014, unfinished the project transforms what was once a residential space into a contemporary cultural complex. "It was crucial to understand what could be preserved, such as the foundations, and what should be adapted, such as doubling the ceiling heights, with the removal of entire floors," explains Martin Corullon. The choice to intervene and adapt an existing structure, rather than building from scratch, reinforces So Paulo's history as a city in constant transformation.Save this picture!Construction ChallengesThe implementation of the project was not without challenges. The main difficulty was the partial demolition of the old concrete building, which had several structural columns. The process was conducted with parts being demolished and built simultaneously, without causing an aggressive intervention in the surroundings. "The tunnel that will connect the two buildings, in addition to being a complex engineering work given that we are excavating on Avenida Paulista, is unusual in architectural projects, it is actually widely used in infrastructure systems, but in our case, it will serve the public and the transit of works of art" comments Gustavo Cedroni.Save this picture!Materials and Relationships to the Original BuildingThe project pays subtle homage to Lina Bo Bardi's original building through the use of carefully selected materials. The black hardwood floors, for example, are a direct reference to the black floor of MASP. Basalt stone, used in several details, including the sidewalk and staircase of the original building, is also present in the new building. Exposed concrete, a hallmark of Lina's project, is another key material that reinforces this connection. The metallic skin covers the building up to a certain height, while the ground floor is wrapped in clear glass, preserving the feeling of openness and integration with the surroundings. "When the elevator doors open, you will have a full view of the art galleries, without walls of any kind, reinforcing the idea of immediate connection of the public with the art pieces just as it happens at MASPs picture gallery" explains Gustavo CedroniSave this picture!Technology and SustainabilityThe new MASP building represents not only physical expansion, but also technological modernization that positions the museum among the most advanced in the world. The air conditioning and lighting systems, designed with state-of-the-art technology, will meet the strict international standards for the conservation of works of art. In addition, automated LED lighting ensures energy efficiency, significantly reducing environmental impact.Save this picture!Another crucial aspect of sustainability in the project lies in its timeless design, with simple shapes and the reduced use of highly durable materials. This structural minimalism reflects the natural longevity of the building, ensuring that its aesthetics and functionality are maintained over time, without the need for major future interventions. Sustainability, therefore, goes beyond energy efficiency: it is also reflected in the choice of materials and in the architectural design, which combines practicality and aesthetics with the durability required by an iconic work.Save this picture!Sustainability is a central theme in the project, which has achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The double metal faade and smart ventilation systems were designed to reduce energy consumption, ensuring thermal comfort and savings. This approach highlights METRO Arquitetos' commitment to creating a building that is not only innovative and functional, but also respects the environment and integrates harmoniously into the urban landscape.Save this picture!Save this picture!Social and Cultural SpacesThe Pietro Maria Bardi building will have exhibition galleries, multipurpose areas, classrooms, a restoration laboratory, restaurant and caf, creating several meeting points for visitors to enjoy. These new spaces will expand MASP's capacity to serve the public, offering a varied program of exhibitions, courses, and cultural events.Save this picture! The Pietro Maria Bardi building, expected to be completed in 2024, will be a milestone in MASP's history, transforming not only its physical structure, but also the cultural experience of its visitors. This project reaffirms the importance of the museum for the city of So Paulo and Brazil, offering more space for art, socialization and dialogue between past, present and future.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Masp, So Paulo, SP, BrazilLocation to be used only as a reference.
