WWW.BUSINESSINSIDER.COMI've been on nearly 100 cruises. These are my 5 best tips for first-timers who don't really want to go.I have tips for people taking their first cruise, especially if they're hesitant.Try booking a new ship and balcony room to figure out what you like while enjoying extra amenities.Choose an itinerary with limited sea days and take advantage of the kids' club if you're a parent.Thinking about trying a cruise but worried you're not a "cruise person"? Well, keep reading.I've been on nearly 100 cruises, and these floating cities are incredible places to spend a week especially if you know how to stack the deck in your favor. As someone who has sailed on my fair share of ships, here are my top tips for first-time cruisers, including those who are hesitant and may not want to go.Book the newest ship you canCruise lines launch new ships every year and the newer ones are almost always big improvements on what came before. In many cases, this means newer rooms, better itineraries, upgraded amenities, more interesting dining options, and cooler shows. Take advantage of the fact that cruise lines do massive amounts of guest research and build those learnings into the new fleet.Plus, newer ships oftentimes come with special booking deals, discounts, and offers.Spring for the balcony roomAlthough not every frequent cruiser will agree, I swear by booking a balcony room especially for your first sailing. It often costs just a few hundred dollars more than an interior or ocean-view room (especially on newer ships), and it could make a huge difference in your experience, particularly if you're cruise-wary.A balcony can serve as a private escape and the backdrop to some of the best moments of your vacation, whether you're sipping a glass of wine or reading a book in peace while overlooking the ocean.Plus, use this as a chance to learn if you're OK skipping a balcony for a cabin with a view or a windowless interior room to save money on your next cruise. When booking a cruise, prioritize itineraryOne of the coolest parts about vacationing via ship is that you travel while you sleep and wake up in a new destination every day.For your first trip, prioritize an itinerary with great locations and as few sea days (entire days when the ship doesn't dock anywhere) as possible.Although sea days can mean you spend more time exploring the ship, you'll usually get plenty of time to enjoy it in the evenings. One or two sea days are fine during a weeklong sojourn you need some time to get your spa sessions in, of course! but you may be itching to explore if it's any more than that.(Plus, this will limit your time in the open water, which will be a blessing to your future self if you end up experiencing seasickness.)Carefully pack your carry-onThis tip doesn't just apply to packing for a cruise but it's especially important to remember when you're traveling on a ship.By design, you're separated from your luggage when you initially board the ship on embarkation morning. It might be minutes or hours before you're reunited with it.So, it's important to really plan out what you'll need that first day and keep it with you. I suggest packing a swimsuit, change of clothes, and any other essentials (a phone charger, medication, sunscreen, etc). That way, you won't spend your entire first day sweating in your cold-weather clothes watching everyone else hit the hot tub and sundeck.Do not sleep on the kids' clubsOften, vacationing with young kids feels like babysitting with palm trees, and it can be really hard for parents to truly relax. The good news is that cruising is one of the best getaways for parents with littles. Most cruises have kids' clubs on board, which are separated by age (often from toddler to teen) and staffed with counselors whose job is to make sure your kids (safely) have the best time ever. Many of these staff members are CPR-trained with years of childcare experience. Plus, with a range of games and activities from teen discos to ice-cream parties, these clubs can be great for a range of kids.Even if your children stay for just an hour at a time, that's more than enough to relax in a cabana for two or sneak in a private, adult dinner.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились

WWW.VOX.COMHow a major Supreme Court case is changing how police do their jobsVox Members got to read this story first. Support independent journalism and get exclusive access to stories like this by becoming a Vox Member today. Two and a half years ago, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that experts said would upend Americas gun laws. On the surface, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen centered on how New York issued permits to people who wanted to carry their guns in public. The Court said that the states practice of issuing concealed carry permits only to those who could prove they had a special need to carry a gun like a threat to their personal safety was a violation of their constitutional rights. The ruling invalidated not only New Yorks laws but also the regulations in California, New Jersey, Maryland, and other states that are home, collectively, to more than 80 million Americans. But it wasnt just that a few states laws were overturned. The Court also established a new standard for judging gun laws: Going forward, government officials had to prove their regulations were consistent with the Second Amendment by pointing to a similar gun law from American history.Legal experts blistered the Court for the decision, pointing out that this new standard would open up nearly every gun law in the country to legal challenge. Gun violence researchers worried, too, about the possibility of more gun deaths, pointing to research showing that states that allowed people to carry guns had higher rates of violent crime.Since the Bruen decision, much has been written about the havoc it has unleashed in the lower courts. Judges have protested that theyre not trained to be historians. Scholars in niche corners of legal academia have become in-demand expert witnesses. And several laws that were relatively uncontroversial, including banning guns from churches and other places of worship and prohibitions on young adults from carrying, have been challenged as unconstitutional. In United States v. Rahimi over the summer, the Court appeared to narrow the scope of Bruen, clarifying that the government had the right to prohibit people with restraining orders for domestic violence from owning firearms. But the clarification still left plenty of questions, and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson noted numerous complaints about Bruen from lower courts in her concurring opinion.Bruen is still a very new decision. The true fallout will likely take years to unfold. Rahimi is the only other Second Amendment case the Court has resolved since. Other cases, involving more legally and morally challenging disputes, are likely still to come.Since Bruen, there have been more than 1,000 court cases in which people convicted of felonies have contested their bans on gun ownership, according to nonprofit newsroom The Trace. And there are hundreds of legal challenges to gun laws now working their way through the courts. Less discussed has been what the change has meant for policing and for criminal justice in America. The worst-case scenario experts warned about where gun violence rose because more people were carrying weapons hasnt yet materialized. (Violent crime and murder continued to drop at a historic rate in 2023.) Still, the fall of Bruen has presented new challenges to how the police operate and new opportunities for the people theyve charged with crimes. When the Bruen decision came down, LeRonne Armstrong felt like his job was about to get a lot more difficult.Armstrong was then Oakland, Californias chief of police. Like many American cities, Oakland was suffering from an epidemic of gun violence that got worse during the pandemic. Armstrong didnt think that having more guns on the street would help solve the citys problems, and state law allowed police to deny people concealed carry permits if they couldnt demonstrate a reason for one. We just felt like it wasnt appropriate to approve more guns when we were taking the stance that we were trying to remove guns from the community, Armstrong says. We were really trying to emphasize that this is not a city where we are welcoming concealed carry permits. But after Bruen, law enforcement in California could no longer deny concealed carry permits at their own discretion. Oakland, Armstrong said, saw a huge spike in requests for concealed weapons permits. Similarly, applications to carry a gun skyrocketed in New York City, Baltimore, and Washington, DC matching trends in other big cities like Chicago and Philadelphia. Some police departments, facing staffing shortages and the pandemic gun violence surge, were overwhelmed with the number of applications and couldnt keep up, so much so that they were sued for failing to process them quickly enough. But lawmakers in states affected by the Bruen decision didnt just accept that people could now carry their guns wherever they wanted. Instead, they moved quickly to pass new regulations intended to protect public spaces. In New York, for example, the state legislature passed the Concealed Carry Improvement Act of 2022, which banned weapons from a large number of public places. The law also required concealed carry applicants to meet with a state official and provide extensive documentation to prove their good moral character. In other words, while Bruen upended the states gun regulations, a new set of laws quickly upended them again. Two years later, everyone from cops to courts to criminal defense lawyers is still trying to sort out the mess. Its not just that officers are concerned about public safety with more people carrying guns in public. Bruen, along with years of state legislatures legalizing concealed and open carry, has also created confusion about whether seeing someone with a gun is an inherent danger and a reason to believe a crime is taking place. Previously, the courts have held that the presence of a gun, or even the suspicion that a gun might be present, represented a threat significant enough that it allowed police extraordinary powers to stop and search citizens. Now, those long-held shibboleths are coming into question, upending some of the basic premises of police work in the United States. As recently as 1980, nearly all US states either banned carrying guns in public or permitted them only when a person could prove special need, write Brandon del Pozo and Barry Friedman, academics who focus on law and policing, in a 2023 article titled Policing in the Age of the Gun. For that reason, in big cities especially, officers could reasonably assume that a person carrying a gun in public was committing a crime. The world has told the cops that when you see a gun, its probably illegal, and if you suspect a gun is out there in public, you should suspect that a crime is afoot, says del Pozo, who began his career as an officer in the New York City Police Department and served as chief of police in Burlington, Vermont, before becoming an academic researcher at Brown University. In other words, he and Friedman write, generations of police officers were taught that the mere suspicion of a gun gave them the right to stop and search. The Court upheld this practice in a landmark 1968 ruling when it decided in Terry v. Ohio that an officer could detain someone they suspected had committed, were committing, or were about to commit a crime. The Court also held that officers were allowed to briefly search a person if they had reasonable suspicion to believe they could be armed and presently dangerous. Terry formally gave police the power to stop and search people in public. The decision paved the way for the rise of controversial police practices like stop-and-frisk, a widespread practice of stopping people usually Black and brown men and patting them down to check for weapons. Later, the Court expanded the powers of police to include pretextual traffic stops, where officers could pull over a car after saying they observed a traffic violation and then use the opportunity to search someone. In the law, guns have been permission slips, says Friedman, a professor at New York University who specializes in constitutional law, policing, and criminal procedure. An actual gun or the threat of a gun, even a bulge that might indicate a gun all of these gave a license to do a lot of things to people. The courts have historically allowed officers those powers in part because the presence of a gun was considered a threat to their safety. The Supreme Court has continually emphasized its commitment to officer safety, says Guha Krishnamurthi, a professor and expert in criminal procedure at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Then came years of state laws declaring that it was legal for people in certain states to carry guns in public, and Bruen, which took it a step further and said that citizens have a right to carry their gun in every state. The change raises a fundamental question about how much of a risk guns are to the police. The Court is suddenly saying: Guns arent dangerous. Owning a gun is your individual right. You shouldnt be trespassed upon by law enforcement simply because you have a gun, Krishnamurthi says. Theres a real tension because if thats true, then merely [seeing] some guy pacing in front of a store with a displayed firearm is not a danger. And that means that the officer cant approach them, cant frisk them, cant do all of that. Or can they? Its still not entirely clear. In some states, lawmakers have passed legislation making it clear that officers arent allowed to stop and search someone just because they suspect they might have a gun they arent allowed to be carrying. But in jurisdictions where those laws arent in place, the courts are still struggling to figure it out.In 2023, according to the New York Times, a man named Robert Homer was searched by police after they spotted him on surveillance footage in a high-crime area putting a gun in his pocket. An officer, saying he had reason to suspect a crime was taking place, searched Homer, located the gun, and then discovered that Homer had a prior conviction for sex trafficking. Homer was indicted and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Homers lawyer protested the charge, saying that having a firearm in public wasnt enough to warrant a search. She claimed Homer shouldnt have been stopped by police in the first place because Bruen makes it clear that carrying a gun is his right. A judge agreed with the lawyer and dismissed the charge. But in another case later that month in Manhattan, a state judge said he disagreed with the finding and rejected a different persons request to have his conviction thrown out on Bruen grounds. So, at least in New York, theres still confusion about what, exactly, police can and should do when they see a gun. Its not just New York, though, and its not just a question of what right police have to search someone. Some police worry that an increasingly armed public makes everyone less safe. As Armstrong notes, officers arent carrying around lists of people who are licensed to carry. When they encounter people who are armed, that threat is serious for law enforcement, he says. In a dangerous situation, police are making a split-second decision, he adds. Those decisions, at times, have tragic and deadly consequences for civilians: Every year in the United States, the police shoot and kill innocent people, later saying they opened fire because they feared for their lives. The risks to officers arent hypothetical: In 2024, at least 49 officers were shot and killed while on duty. Its not unfounded, because there are police who get shot within seconds of a stop, del Pozo says. Its a real tension. Those stories stay with officers, who are constantly thinking about safety on the job. You worry, as a police officer, who are you making contact with, Armstrong says. Is this person armed? For criminal defense attorneys and their clients, though, the uncertainty hasnt been a bad thing. The ruling is creating new opportunities for legal defense, with some arguing that Bruen allows them to challenge charges that disproportionately affect Black Americans. In the decades after Terry, stop-and-frisk and traffic stops became widespread, as did the criticism that they violated Americans Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure. In 2013, for example, a court found that New York Citys policy of stop-and-frisk violated citizens constitutional rights. Researchers have shown that the policies have been used to disproportionately harass and incarcerate Black and brown people. Bruen now gives defendants a chance to challenge one of the most common charges that police use to try to control violent crime criminal possession of a weapon as well as other charges. Some legal scholars have noted that the new precedent established by Bruen could provide opportunities to end long-held policing practices that have ensnared a disproportionate number of racial minorities in the criminal justice system. Bruen should be used as a tool for decriminalization of minority gun ownership, writes William Jacobs-Perez in the University of Maryland Law Journal of Race, Religion, Gender and Class. The fact that Bruen makes it harder for police to justify practices like stop-and-frisk, he says, provides an opportunity to abandon the current system of punishing people for gun possession in favor of policies that tackle the root causes of gun violence. Not everyone is optimistic that the outcome of Bruen will be more racially just policing. In Policing in the Age of the Gun, Friedman and del Pozo argue that police will likely just find other methods like asking people if they have a weapon on them to justify their searches. [The] police are almost certainly going to rely more on supposedly consensual encounters, and courts will grant them leeway, del Pozo and Friedman write. Friedman says that police will probably find judges who are sympathetic to their arguments. For that reason, hes skeptical that Bruen will lead to more just law enforcement practices in overpoliced neighborhoods.I dont really believe that policing of guns is going to stop in those communities, Friedman says. But maybe were going to get ever more complicated stories about why the police had to conduct a stop in a situation. In other words, like so many other consequences of Bruen, he expects the chaos will continue.See More:0 Комментарии 0 Поделились

WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COMFootball Manager 25 video game cancelled after series of delaysThe makers of Football Manager have cancelled the 2025 release of the game after a series of delays.Sports Interactive (SI) announced that FM25 had been scrapped, with the games makers turning their attention to future games, with the next release usually due in November. SI, which is owned by the gaming company Sega, apologised to fans after making the difficult decision to cancel the game after a number of technical hitches. We know this will come as a huge disappointment, especially given that the release date has already moved twice, and [fans] have been eagerly anticipating the first gameplay reveal, a statement said. The games makers said they had planned to create the biggest technical and visual advancement in the series for a generation but that had proven impossible. They said: While many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be. We could have pressed on, released FM25 in its current state, and fixed things down the line but thats not the right thing to do. We were also unwilling to go beyond a March release as it would be too late in the football season to expect players to then buy another game later in the year.skip past newsletter promotionSign up to Pushing ButtonsFree weekly newsletterKeza MacDonald's weekly look at the world of gamingPrivacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COMI loved Pokmon Trading Card Pocket until I didntFor months now I have been in the thrall of Pokmon Trading Card Pocket. Its a devilishly slick blend of card-collecting and pared-down battling that has had me obediently opening the app on my phone at least twice a day since it launched. The virtual cards are beautifully done; the rare art cards especially, with their pastoral scenes of Pokmon in their natural habitats. I have spent many hours on the battles, too, honing decks and chasing win streaks to earn myself victory emblems. I got most of my friends into it, anticipating the day when its makers at DeNa would finally enable trading so I could fill the last couple of holes in my collection. The Guardians journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link.Learn more. This week, on the day that the trading went live and an expansion full of pretty new cards was introduced, I quit. I made a couple of trades for the Venosaur Ex and Machamp Ex that had evaded my grasp despite opening hundreds of packs, took a screenshot of the collection complete screen, and I havent opened it since. Im done.I didnt quit in protest at the fiddly, expensive nature of the new trading feature, or because the new cards mostly feature monsters from an era of Pokmon that holds no nostalgic power for me. Ive just suddenly had enough. I was enjoying every minute I spent with the game until I wasnt. Usually, you know youre done with a game when youve finished it, but in this era of the forever game, we have to choose when to quit. Sometimes this happens overnight for me. One day Im enjoying a game, the next day Im sick of it.Inconveniently, I realise it about 75% of the way through a games campaign. Especially with open-world titles, the best hours are the ones in the middle, where youve played enough to understand a games unique ideas and systems but not enough to have totally mastered them; there comes a point where you know youre nearing the endgame. Suddenly, the friction between me and the game world the stickiness, as game designers refer to it is gone, and everything feels smooth and easy, and I lose interest. (This is why I love FromSoftwares games so much: from Dark Souls to Elden Ring they never get easy or predictable.)Enough is enough Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Photograph: Games PressHere is a small selection of games from the past year that I abandoned in this way, not long before the end: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle; Dragons Dogma 2; Paper Mario: the Thousand-Year Door; Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom; Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. I could sit down with any of these for a couple of evenings and polish them off some of them I already have, months after leaving them unfinished but it always feels like a chore. Meanwhile, Ive played Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders, Balatro and Hades long past their completion points, because the stickiness is still there.I often get readers writing to ask when its OK to quit a game. For me, the answer is whenever you stop having fun. I rarely quit because I get stuck; instead I quit when I stop getting stuck, when I sense Ive seen everything meaningful that a game has to offer. I think its easy to keep playing something thats lost its appeal out of a sense of obligation.Studies of trophy and achievement stats over the years have found that only between 15-35% of players (pdf) actually complete any given game. I feel for the developers making hours of content that people might never see, but there is just so much entertainment available to everyone that you can hardly blame people for not finding the time for all of it. Some players take pride in finishing every game that they start, but for the rest of us? Its OK to stop.I felt briefly bereft when I was done with Pokmon Trading Card Game, the same feeling I get when I finish a good novel. Part of me also felt relieved to be freed of the daily habit. Its opened a little space in my day for something new and something new is always what Im looking for when I pick up a video game. What to playLife ruiningly compulsive Civilization VII. It's currently working on movie adaptations for GI Joe, Clue, Monopoly, Furby and even Play-Doh. Prior to that, it released titles like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Magic The Gathering's current set, Aetherdrift, launches next week, marking its 103rd expansion since the card game debuted in 1993. The game has held a steady audience, but interest exploded when Universes Beyond: The Lord of the Rings arrived in Summer of 2023. The game gained widespread attention when only one special version of the 'One Ring' card was made, which Post Malone purchased for $2 million (over 1.6 million). Magic takes place in a wide range of universes called Planes, which each have their own theming, characters, and story, so the possibilities are near endless for what the movie and show could focus on. GIZMODO.COM2,000-Year-Old Chariot Parts Discovered Beneath Welsh AirfieldBy Margherita Bassi Published February 7, 2025 | Comments (0) | The horse bit (below) and terret ring (above). Operation Nightingale via Facebook. An archaeological excavation in Wales has unearthed magnificent Iron Age artifacts. But it wasnt archaeologists who found them. Military personnel and veterans have uncovered 2,000-year-old Celtic artifacts beneath the airfield at Royal Air Force (RAF) Valley station in Wales. The findings, officially declared as treasure, may have been part of a famous archaeological hoard previously excavated in the 1940s. They include horse gear and rare parts of a chariot, as detailed in a statement by the U.K. government from late last month. The importance of RAF Valley to UK Defence today is beyond question, but this is a reminder that we are part of a continuum spanning over 2,000 years and we must be responsible stewards of this land, said Station Commander at RAF Valley Gez Currie in the statement. We are immensely proud to be part of efforts to discover and conserve these important artefacts from Welsh history and equally delighted that our own service personnel have been so intimately involved in these efforts. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) led the excavations ahead of plans to refurbish the airfield. The archaeological work included personnel and veterans from Operation Nightingale, an initiative that supports military personnel and veterans through archaeology. The findings include a horse bit dating to around 60 CE and a terret ring, used to guide the reins of a horse-drawn Celtic chariot, which is one of only three ever found in Wales featuring a distinctive red inlay. The decorative red inlay on the terret ring. Operation Nightingale via Facebook. The search for the lost hoard was hard work and we had a huge area to cover. It wasnt until the final day with just 10 minutes to go that I discovered the horse bridle-bit, said Flt Sgt Graham Moore. At first the team thought I was joking, but quickly realised Id found something special. Words could not explain how I felt in that moment, but it was a wonderful experience. Archaeologists believe that the horse bit and terret ring are part of the important Llyn Cerrig Bach hoard, which came to light in 1943 during wartime construction work on the airfield. Celtic people likely deposited the artifacts in the Llyn Cerrig-bach lake as offerings to their gods. Thousands of years later, workers extracted peat from several lakes in the area to stabilize the foundations of the new runwayalong with over 150 bronze and iron artifacts dating to between 300 BCE and 100 CE.It is amazing to think that these 2,000 year old artefacts have remained so complete and well-preserved within a shallow peat deposit, previously moved and dragged onto the airfield over 80 years ago from a nearby ancient lake! said Adam Gwilt, senior curator of prehistory at the Amgueddfa Cymru museum in Wales, which will host the recent findings. The bridle-bit and terret are both of styles which are not represented amongst the original collection, he added. They add important new information on the religious gifting of prized objects into the lake at the end of the Iron Age, a little before, or at around the time when the Roman Army invaded Anglesey. Given this, it feels rather appropriate that these objects first came to light during World War II, as the Allies fended off a completely different kind of invasion.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Isaac Schultz Published January 30, 2025 By Margherita Bassi Published December 13, 2024 By Margherita Bassi Published December 2, 2024 ScienceHuman History Prisoners Tools Found Hidden in Chimney at Auschwitz By George Dvorsky Published May 21, 2020 ScienceHuman History Famed WW2 Aircraft Carrier Torpedoed in 1942 Found Miles Deep in Pacific Ocean By George Dvorsky Published February 13, 20190 Комментарии 0 Поделились

A farmhouse in the Mark Brandenburg, half an hour north of Berlin, was to become the client's new home and workplace. The agricultural use of the house was probably abandoned in the 1950s and the stable and workshop rooms were converted into four flats. The client decided to keep the remaining old tenant in the house and not alter this flat. The remaining areas were carefully remodeled and converted into living and working spaces by Christoph Wagner architects with Wenke Schladitz and reoriented towards the surrounding garden. A flat with 140 square meters was created on two floors. It was important to the client and the architects to preserve the character of the house with its traces and layers of time. A complete renovation was not desired. For example, cracks were only repaired where structurally necessary and not for design reasons. Large areas of the building were left untouched.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The formerly windowless gable wall now lets the morning sun into the house through a large, off-center round window. The curved brass window plate was shaped in such a way that it elegantly directs the water away from the wood and reflects the light deep into the house. The glass pane does not sit in a separate frame, but the cross-laminated timber (CLT) of the bay window was milled so that the pane could be inserted directly. The round glazing bead was made from brass by a befriended blacksmith and emphasized the special nature of the location. The largest structural intervention in the existing building was the opening in the south faade for the wide terrace window, combined with the ceiling opening for the staircase. The double-shell spandrel masonry of the outer wall is supported above the new window by an externally positioned balcony projection. This made it possible to avoid supports on the inside.Save this picture!Save this picture! The new staircase marks the privacy of the upper floor with the side stringer of the upper flight of stairs raised as a privacy screen. This projects into the room from above as a negative form and meets the volume of the two lower flights of stairs at the landing. Demolition bricks were reused as non-load-bearing interior walls. The floor structure of glass gravel and regional hemp clay fill does not require any waterproofing membranes. Parquet floors demolished elsewhere could be partially reinstalled.Save this picture!Christoph Wagner Architects has often experienced that building owners openly or covertly harbor the wish that an old house should be as comfortable as a new building and ideally be renovated in one go. They consider this to be wrong, and not just for reasons of sustainability. CWA believes that you have to know and understand a house to be able to react appropriately to its character by remodeling and extending it. This is usually a long process. The house in Lanke has now reached an intermediate stage. It is not finished. Just as architecture is never finished anyway and continues to evolve with its users.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMaterialsWoodBrickMaterials and TagsPublished on February 07, 2025Cite: "House for a Goldsmith / Christoph Wagner Architekten" 07 Feb 2025.
