  • RAIC Journal: We are going to do this togetherReflections on a bio-regional design research trip
    www.canadianarchitect.com
HORTUS, by Herzog & de Meuron, is a rammed earth timber building under construction in Basel, Switzerland. Image courtesy Herzog & de MeuronIn the spring of last year, I travelled to research the emerging field of bio-regional design, experiencing first-hand how exceptional architectural and material practices are forging a path forward to a healthier, lower-carbon future for our built environment. I am the latest recipient of DIALOGs Iris Prize, an internal research and travel grant for practitioners, awarded annually to explore innovative ideas that meaningfully improve the wellbeing of communities and the environment we share. What follows is a dispatch from my research trip. The bio-regional design framework is straightforward: it focuses on locality, biomaterials and new construction processes to achieve exceptional results. The challenge lies in implementationbreaking free from the status quo of a global network reliant on high-carbon, unsustainable construction materials. In a bio-regional approach, the process of construction becomes as important as the design itself, with novel techniques and, often, new materials being created. In Basel, Switzerland, Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane has designed the Vitra campuss most sustainable building to date: a small garden house made from thatch and timber, using materials that are grown instead of those extracted from below ground. Meanwhile, in Basel, Herzog & de Meuron are constructing HORTUS, a five-storey building designed to be net energy-positive within 31 years. It features a rammed earth structural floor system, developed together with the client Senn AG and ZPF Ingenieure, and a reduced material palette of clay, wood, and cellulose. It is, without question, the most ambitious example of building at scale using natural materials that Ive seen: the approach is imaginative and technically rigorous, resulting in a stunning building.BC Architects, Materials, and Studies: building with earth and inspiring others in Brussels, Belgium. Photo by BC ArchitectsBC Architects, Materials, and Studies in Brussels operate as a tripartite practice, specializing in earth construction, using surplus excavated soil from building sites. They began as an architecture studio but discovered that Brussels urban geology is ideal for creating rammed earth and other earth-based building products. This led the architects to establish a materials company, BC Materials, which manufactures products like earth blocks (replacements for traditional concrete masonry blocks), fired bricks, mixes for unstabilized rammed earth (made without cement binders and fully reusable), and earth plasters and paints for interior finishes. They also founded BC Studies, a branch dedicated to education and teaching others. On a hot summer day, I joined one of BC Architects Earth Discovery Day workshops at their shared workspace with BC Materials. Alongside a small group of architects, builders, and students, I participated in hands-on exercises to experiment with different earth product mixes. I left with clay under my fingernails, sand in my shoes, and excitement for the potential of earth-based construction. Reused materials sorted and stockpiled by Rotor, a practice based on reuse and the circular economy in Brussels, Belgium. Photo by Victoria Van KanRotor, another Brussels-based practice, focuses on salvaging construction materials from the built environment. They operate both as a supply outlet for dismantled and reclaimed building components, and as consultants helping other design practices integrate circular construction strategies.Their large warehouse in northern Brussels showcases salvaged materials, which are often sold at lower costs than new products, to those who appreciate the patina and texture of second-hand materials. Rotor has also conducted several EU studies on circular construction, and is involved in ambitious projects like the adaptive reuse and retrofit of an 18-storey office tower in collaboration with Snhetta. Their goal: to allocate 3% of the buildings overall weight and cost to repurposed materials. When I visited their studio, the team was busy preparing an exhibition to highlight the work they and others across Europe are doing to advance circular construction practices. What stood out most during the trip wasnt the novelty or innovation of these construction techniquesit was the openness with which everyone shared their learnings, taught others, and inspired action. There was an urgent sense of responsibility to move toward a more sustainable future. Now that Im back in Canada, the challenge is figuring out how to create our own regional approaches to low-carbon building. As appeared in theFebruary 2025issue of Canadian Architect magazine The post RAIC Journal: We are going to do this togetherReflections on a bio-regional design research trip appeared first on Canadian Architect.

  • RAIC Journal: Accessible Architecture in the Super Ageing EraA Field Report from Japan
    www.canadianarchitect.com
Fukagawa Enmichi community centre. Photo by Henry TsangCanadas population is aging rapidly, yet our built environment is not adapting quickly enough. By 2050, the number of seniors will be double that of todays, reaching one-fourth of the population. Japanthe most advanced ageing country in the worldhas already reached this milestone, and entered what is known as the super-ageing era. A stroll around Tokyo gives a glimpse of what the future holds, and provides clues to what Canadas cities and built environment will need to do to adapt to this forthcoming reality. I will introduce a few instructive projects here.To begin, Tokyo is the largest city in the world, and its complexity is mind-numbing. Yet it is safe, walkable and accessible. Nearly all of Tokyos 822 train stations have elevators, and major sidewalks are all connected by an expansive network of yellow tactile indicators. Intersections have generous curb ramps with visual and audible signals at crossings. But perhaps most impressive for Canadians is the quality of the sidewalk pavement: flat, smooth, rigid and spotless. As a first case study, I visited Fukagawa Enmichi, an award-winning multi-generational community centre designed by JAMZA. Architect Shun Hasegawa gave me a tour and described his concept for a community hub fit for 0 to 100-year-olds. The building spaces are shared among several operators, including an infant daycare, an after-school club, and a day service for seniors. What makes it work is the intentional programming and layout, which encourage the three groups to intersect and interact. The functional spaces are connected by an interior street that doubles as a library and an alleyway shortcut. From the outside, it looks like a caf, so many people are curious and wander in, but when they find out its not, they walk through our street and exit from the back door, says Hasegawa. Its funny how people get embarrassed to leave from the door they entered. Some people use our corridor as a shortcut. But thats what we wanted it to be, a street-like connector and public space that contributes to the neighbourhood.Visit to the Nishi-Kasai Inouye Eye Hospital. Photo by Henry TsangA second case study is the Nishi-Kasai Inouye Eye Hospital, a healthcare facility specializing in age-related diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. I visited with Kevin Ng, the Rick Hansen Foundations accessibility expert. The building was designed by architecture firm Kajima, and implemented a series of innovative accessibility solutions specific to senior patients with low vision. According to Mari Chiba, the hospitals corporate manager, One thing you would notice is that there is very little use of braille, despite being an ophthalmology hospital. In reality, our patients have very low braille literacy because they have low vision, they are not blind. Therefore, we focused the design on enhancing visibility, such as color contrast and lighting, as well as audible signals. Soft and hard materials were used for flooring to vary the sound and feel of directional wayfinding. Ceiling lights and handrail lighting are aligned to be used as track lighting, and in emergencies, this lighting flashes to provide directional indication. In the super-ageing era, there will be need for super-accessible solutions for the built environment. But we may not have to reinvent the wheel. This month, the RAIC Long Term Care Working Group will be hosting its first online panel discussion on the future of architecture for ageing in Canada. Stay tuned.Dr. Henry Tsang, Architect, AAA, FRAIC, is an RAIC Advisor to Professional Practice appointed to the RAIC Long Term Care Working Group. He is also an associate professor at the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University, and is currently on sabbatical leave as a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo. As appeared in theFebruary 2025issue of Canadian Architect magazine The post RAIC Journal: Accessible Architecture in the Super Ageing EraA Field Report from Japan appeared first on Canadian Architect.

  • Discover How Four Black College Students Sparked a Nationwide Civil Rights Movement, on This Date in 1960
    www.smithsonianmag.com
A statue of the four freshmen who led the sit-in at the lunch counter of a Woolworths department store in Greensboro, North Carolina. Ted Richardson/For The Washington Post via Getty ImagesOn the afternoon of February 1, 1960, four college freshmen walked up to the lunch counter of a Woolworths department store in Greensboro, North Carolina, and changed the course of history.Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair Jr. (now Jibreel Khazan) and David Richmond were students at Agricultural & Technical College of North Carolina. All four were Black, and the lunch counters at Woolworth stores were reserved for whites only.Wanting to draw attention to racial segregation and discrimination in the U.S. South, the students walked up to the L-shaped lunch counter and took a seat. Each then asked for a cup of coffee. They were all refused service. Staff called the police, but since McNeil, McCain, Blair and Richmond hadnt done anything wrong and were paying customers (having purchased goods at the stores non-segregated counter earlier that day), police officers decided not to take any action. In the meantime, local Greensboro merchant Ralph Johns, a white ally of the students who encouraged sit-ins as a form of protest, had already alerted the media. The four men stayed at the lunch counter until the store closed for the night. The following day, the number of sit-in participants at Greensboros Woolworth lunch counter more than tripled, including female students from nearby Bennett College. By the fourth day, more than 300 people partook in the nonviolent protest. The numbers grew so large that the protest even spread to the lunch counter at S.H. Kress & Company, another Greensboro department store.Reflections on the Greensboro Lunch CounterWatch on Later dubbed the Greensboro Four, McNeil, McCain, Blair and Richmond had all been inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.s tactics of nonviolence, an approach that consisted of principles including seeking to win the friendship and understanding of the opponent and a willingness to suffer without retaliating.Their efforts proved fruitful. Soon enough, sit-in protests began taking place at segregated businesses throughout the South, including in other North Carolina cities like Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Durham, as well as states like Tennessee and Mississippi. Some protesters were arrested; others were assaulted with water balloons and insults. But the act of civil disobedience remained one of peaceful protest, eventually forcing a policy change at Woolworths and other establishments. The Greensboro Woolworths lost a reported $150,000 due to boycotts over the next five-and-a-half-months. Finally, manager Clarence Harris desegregated the store. On July 25, Harris asked three Black employees to change out of their work clothes and sit down at the counter to eat. They were the first Black customers to be served there, a monumental event that occurred quietly under the radar.A portion of the original lunch counter remains in its original location, now part of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum. (Another section is on view at the Smithsonians National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.) The store is also a stop along the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, a collection of landmarks across 15 states that played a vital role in advancing civil rights. The Greensboro sit-in provided a template for nonviolent resistance and marked an early success for the civil rights movement. But it would take until 1964 for the Civil Rights Act to make desegregated public accommodation the law of the land.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: American History, Civil Rights, Martin Luther King, Jr., Movement Leaders, On This Day in History, Race and Ethnicity, Racism, Segregation

  • Will the Apple TV+ Adaptation Get The Murderbot Diaries Right?
    www.denofgeek.com
If you read science fiction, or have anyone in your life who reads science fiction, then at some point over the last few years, someone will probably have told you You should really read The Murderbot Diaries. At first glance, you might wonder why. Martha Wells book series chronicles the adventures of a purpose-grown security cyborg or SecUnit, who has broken free of its programming, joining a host of robots who have broken free of their programming from The Wild Robot Roz to Shortcuts Johnny Five. The setting is a well-used one straight out of the drawer. Human-populated space connected by wormholes and ruled by a selection of Weyland-Yutani-ish evil corporations. There are aliens, but all we see of them are the occasional ruins of a long-dead civilization. And the series does not go out of its way to subvert your expectations here. The setting you have imagined from that brief description is close to the money. Are the corporations doing evil conspiracies? Youre welcome to guess. Do those conspiracies involve the remnants of those alien civilizations? We will not rule it out.But the familiarity and even predictability of that setting is a feature, not a bug, as it is all in service to The Murderbot Diaries big appeal: the Murderbot itself.Meet the MurderbotMost first-person narrators in a sci-fi setting are not just here to tell you the story, but to serve as your guide in the rich, wonderful and complex world in which that story is set. Murderbot does not want to be your guide.A typical Murderbot adventure, at least early on in the series, will go like this. Murderbot is travelling and trying to avoid being detected. Along the way, it will run into some humans who are in some form of danger, possibly because it is their own fault. So Murderbot will have to save them, while also trying to conceal the fact that it is a rogue SecUnit. Usually, it will find itself unwittingly befriending a human or AI in the process of saving them, before disappearing into the horizon again.Murderbot has not been freed from its governor modules control to lead a rebellion for AI-kind, or to go and explore the big wide universe. It has no interest in all the usual carrots-on-sticks dangled in front of protagonists. All it wants is to be left alone and allowed to watch its shows, and the stories of The Murderbot Diaries are invariably what gets in the way of that.Put simply, even by science fiction robot standards, Murderbot is hugely autistic coded. Wells herself has gone on record as saying this is not deliberate. She has described herself as Neurodivergent, and in this interview with the Science Fiction Book Club said, I didnt intend for Murderbot to have autism spectrum traits, but again, Im drawing from my own experience. But whatever her intentions, all the cues are there. Murderbot does not like being touched. It does not like eye contact usually when it is dealing with humans it will watch them through the feeds of its own security drones so that it does not have to look at them directly. Its enjoyment of mediatypes includes finding new ones to watch and rewatching old favourites repeatedly, and as much as it is for entertainment, Murderbot uses them as models for human interaction, which it finds difficult. The humans around Murderbot rarely realise just how much information it is processing at any given moment, navigating data feeds while watching multiple cameras and audio feeds simultaneously.Importantly, a robot character and an autistic-coded character and a robotic autistic-coded character, Murderbot is never devoid of emotions. It feels grumpy, and sad, and scared, and lonely in ways which it finds hard to process because it also hates being around people. And while all this might not make Murderbot a tremendously engaging guide to the universe, and a less-than-reliable narrator for its own inner emotional life, there is one thing it excels at describing: violence.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Reads like an action movie is one of those things that publishers like to put on book covers that doesnt really mean anything. However, Wells is tremendous at laying out a big fight. The scenes are well choreographed, detailed and viscerally described, and yet without ever slowing things down. All of this makes Murderbot an ideal candidate for a big TV adaptation. Great action scenes, a loveable protagonist, cool procedurally driven storylines, and a setting that is both expansive and entirely possible to put together from preexisting science fiction set pieces. So its not surprising that the series has been snapped up by Apple TV+, a good fit, because with For All Mankind, Foundation, Silo and Severance, the streamer has shown it is not afraid of science fiction with big ideas and big visuals. The show is already racking up an enviable cast, and a fantastic lead actor in the form of The Northmans Alexander Skarsgrd. But here is where we run into a problem. Its not that Skarsgrd wont do a fantastic job, his CV is full of roles that show he can pull off that mix of slight otherworldliness and subservient-while-immediately-able-to-fuck-you-up that is key to Murderbot. But without putting too fine a point on it, hes a white dude in a role that absolutely does not require a white dude. You might not have noticed, but throughout this article, and the Murderbot books, Murderbots pronouns are it/its. As well as being autistic-coded, Murderbot largely sees gender as a thing that happens to other people, and we are given no clues in the story whether other people read, or even try to read, Murderbot as one gender or the other. In the audiobooks, Kevin R Free does an outstanding job as Murderbots narrator and delivers that narration in a voice that comes across as gender-neutral. The covers always place Murderbots face behind a black visored helmet. In the books, the reader is free to imagine Murderbot looks however they please (for instance, personally in proofing this article Ive had to correct a bunch of subconscious she/her pronouns), obviously that isnt possible for a TV series, but it still feels disappointing that Murderbot is going to look like every default videogame protagonist. As for the series itself, there are questions. So far it appears the series is going to be 10 episodes long, and it is unclear whether this will be an adaptation of multiple Murderbot novellas, or a ten-episode adaptation of the first novella, All Systems Red. Given the trend in TV pacing these days it seems likely the show will err towards the latter. But is that really in keeping with the feel of the series? The Murderbot Diaries as a book series feels like nothing so much as old sixties and seventies TV series such as The Littlest Hobo, The Fugitive or the old The Incredible Hulk series, or more recently, Poker Face series where the supposed protagonist is simply a wanderer who happens to have wandered into someone elses troubles, and who willingly or unwillingly gets drawn into helping them out.Perhaps Murderbot would be less well served by a faithful miniseries based on one of the novellas, and instead do better with a 24-part wandering Rogue SecUnit procedural. It would certainly be the series that would give Murderbot itself more to watch on a long journey

  • U.S. and Dutch Authorities Dismantle 39 Domains Linked to BEC Fraud Network
    thehackernews.com
Feb 01, 2025Ravie LakshmananCybercrime / Fraud PreventionU.S. and Dutch law enforcement agencies have announced that they have dismantled 39 domains and their associated servers as part of efforts to disrupt a network of online marketplaces originating from Pakistan. The action, which took place on January 29, 2025, has been codenamed Operation Heart Blocker. The vast array of sites in question peddled phishing toolkits and fraud-enabling tools and was operated by a group known as Saim Raza since at least 2020, which is also known as HeartSender. These offerings were then used by transnational organized crime groups to target several victims in the United States as part of various business email compromise (BEC) schemes, leading to losses totaling over $3 million."The Saim Raza-run websites operated as marketplaces that advertised and facilitated the sale of tools such as phishing kits, scam pages, and email extractors, often used to build and maintain fraud operations," the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) said."Not only did Saim Raza make these tools widely available on the open internet, it also trained end users on how to use the tools against victims by linking to instructional YouTube videos on how to execute schemes using these malicious programs, making them accessible to criminal actors that lacked this technical criminal expertise."The tools advertised on the marketplaces also made it possible to harvest victim user credentials, which were subsequently put to use to further the fraudulent schemes, the DoJ added. In a coordinated statement, Dutch police officials said the criminal group sold various programs to facilitate digital fraud, which could be employed by cybercriminals to send phishing emails at scale or steal login credentials. The service is estimated to have had thousands of customers prior to its shutdown.Users can check if they are among those impacted by credential theft by visiting the URL "www.politie[.]nl/checkjehack" and entering their email addresses. The cybercrime entity, also referred to as The Manipulaters, was first exposed by independent security journalist Brian Krebs in May 2015, with a report from DomainTools last year identifying operational security lapses indicating that several systems associated with the threat actors have been compromised by stealer malware."Though lacking the technical sophistication many other large cybercrime vendors have, their most notable characteristic is being one of the earliest phishing-focused cybercrime marketplaces to horizontally integrate their business model while also spreading their operations across several separately branded shops," the company said."Evidence suggests that new members have joined and at least one early member of The Manipulaters left the group. They appear to have a physical presence in Pakistan, including Lahore, Fatehpur, Karachi, and Faisalabad."The development follows the takedown of online criminal marketplaces such as Cracked, Nulled, Sellix, and StarkRDP as part of a coordinated law enforcement operation dubbed Talent towards the end of January 2025.Found this article interesting? • Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (1st February)
    www.nintendolife.com
"P-Payback Time, Thorndikkke..."Ollie Reynolds, Staff WriterI've gotten to Halo 2 in my big 'Legendary' playthrough of the mainline Halo series. This, in my book, is probably the most brutal entry on Legendary, and the Elites in particular really don't hold back. If I can get through this one, then the rest should be a cakewalk by comparison. On the Switch, I've decided to dive back into some Metroid. I'm currently playing through Metroid: Zero Mission via NSO and will move onto Metroid Fusion afterwards. If I'm feeling particularly cheeky, then I might even give Super Metroid another go.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube795kWatch on YouTube Jim Norman, Staff WriterBig release week for ol Jimmy this time, so Im going to be trying my best to make some progress on a couple of newbies. Citizen Sleeper 2 is already gobbling up my time and, honestly, Im struggling to put it down thanks to a couple of plot points that really have their claws in me. If I do manage to pry myself away, Ill go with Laikas insanely stressful-looking chicken combat to relax? That doesnt feel right.Either way, see you all on the other side!Alana Hagues, Deputy EditorI'm kicking myself for not playing 1000xRESIST last year I picked it up on sale but got swept up in general overwhelming end-of-year stuff. It's absolutely incredible, and I'm only on chapter four. This is a special video game, folks. On the cosier end of the scale, we've officially started our co-op playthrough of Tales of Graces f Remastered, but on PS5. My partner has never played it before, and I haven't touched it since 2012, so I'm excited to see how this has held up. Lastly, I'm setting up my new home in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, a game I'm scared will take over my life for the rest of 2025. I'll be back for Citizen Sleeper 2 later in the year sorry!Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube795kWatch on YouTube Gonalo Lopes, ContributorI missed out on Freedom Wars when it was released on Vita so I made sure not to let this remastered version walk on by. Further progress in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom should take me near the end game. Its nice to have Turbo Overkill on Switch at last. Still hooked on Guilty Gear -Strive- and Strania -The Stella Machina- EX. My physical Switch copy of Ninja Five-O also arrived, priced at a far more sensible sum compared to the original GBA outing (trust me, dont check eBay for it).Game of the week is Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter. I rather enjoyed the original and this time there is a very sensible easy mode option which mitigates the incredible hardcore combat-driven nature of the series. Hopefully this get a physical version down the line.Kate Gray, ContributorI'm on another detective game kick, so as soon as I finished Rise of the Golden Idol, it was straight onto the just-released game The Roottrees are Dead, which was much more my speed. I've now got a very beautiful colour-coded spreadsheet of names, facts, and rumours, which has been a lot of fun to put together. I feel like a real detective! After finishing that, I'll move on to the sort-of-sequel, Roottreemania.I'm also playing Dragon Age Origins for the first time to entertain my Dragon Age-loving friend while she finishes her PhD, and it's surprisingly fun - the graphics have aged poorly, yes, and the decision to have your character complain every time you tell them to do something is baffling, but the writing is top-drawer stuff.Oh, and I'm playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure, of course... because I'm working on it and I need to keep up with all the stories!Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube795kNile Bowie, ContributorHowdy, folks! Last week, I booted up Dredge for the first time and absolutely got hooked. The game strikes a perfect balance between passive fishing minigames, exploration, and deep loreit really scratched that itch for me. Ill be playing more of Dredge this weekend.I'm also wrapping up some levels in Kirbys Return to Dream Land Deluxe, which Ive yet to complete. Then theres Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, which Im still chipping away at and absolutely loving.I also grabbed Lorelei and the Laser Eyes on sale this week, so if time allows, Ill be booting that up as well. Happy gaming, everyone!Oliver Revolta, ContributorOh my word. As Ive mentioned a few times, for the last month Ive been barely crawling my way through the excellent, but brutally difficult Super Hydorah. My lack of progress I might have managed to get through about 1-2 levels a week started to feel all-encompassing. My life ground to a halt. I am too old for this, and I have now given up.This weekend, Ill play through to the end on the much-too-easy Rookie setting and then get back to No More Heroes III. Big respect goes out to everyone who managed to beat Super Hydorah on normal difficulty. Its a great game, but wow. That's what we have planned for the weekend, but what about you? Let us know in the following poll which games you're planning on booting up over the next couple of days. What are you playing this weekend (1st/2nd February)? (20 votes)Related GamesSee Also
