  • The future of Apple Vision Pro is in medicine
    www.popsci.com
Minimally invasive surgeons at UC San Diego Health are the first in the nation to evaluate the potential use of spatial computing apps on Apple Vision Pro in the operating room.UCSD ShareApples $3,500 Vision Pro sounds like a bargain compared to the price of a fresh, medical-grade cadaver. (A body alone can be up to $10,000 before refrigeration and transport costs, in case you needed to know.) And some medical institutions have started practicing surgery using the spatial-computing headset, which doesnt require a physical human body. Replacing cadavers is just one example of how the Vision Pro has made its way into the medical field since it hit the market in February 2024.On January 30-31, 2025, Sharpe Healthcare hosted the inaugural Spatial Computing Health Care Summit, where medical providers gathered to discuss their use of spatial computing, which embeds digital objects into a live feed of the real world. The same tech that allows people to play virtual Battleship with each other has moved into applications that include everything from training and education to full-fledged operations on human patients.Operating room in a boxThe OR is a very kind of cluttered place, explains Dr. Ryan Broderick, minimally invasive surgeon and interim director for the Center for the Future of Surgery at the Department of Surgery at University of California San Diego. Theres anywhere between five and six screens in a room during a case. Those screens also need to exist between other equipment like vital sign monitors, oxygen tanks, and other medical professionals. The current crowded layout can prevent communication and make checking important vitals a time-wasting and body-punishing task. The way the screens are positioned isnt very ergonomic, which can lead to neck strain, shoulder strain, and injury in our surgeons, says Broderick. By moving the displays into a spatial-computing environment, the information exists wherever the surgeons and nurses are looking at a given moment. The UCSD investigational review board has overseen more than 50 live surgeries in which the primary surgeon wore Apple Vision Pro hardware to provide virtual monitors. Right now, Ive got Vision Pro set up so that myself and my assistant surgeonwho is often a traineeand our scrub tech can all wear the headsets during a case, says Broderick. We each have our own virtual monitors that we put in physical space throughout the room so that were ergonomically positioned and can do the operation without these extra monitors that we normally have. Reducing fatigue is a good thing, especially when surgeons could eventually wear these devices for procedures as long as 12 hours.Training in a spatial-computing environmentWhile the Vision Pro live surgery trials are still in the early stages, the headset has been popping up in training scenarios for medical professionals. Boston Childrens is using Vision Pro to train nurses on using infusion pumps, says Susan Prescott, vice president of Apples Worldwide Developer Relations and Enterprise & Education Markets. The app shes referring to is called CyranoHealth, and it provides impressively thorough and detailed training scenarios for common procedures and situations. Prescott also touts the emergence of digital twins, which are highly detailed 3D models of humans that can, in some cases, take the place of cadavers in surgical training. The team at Boston Childrens Hospital created CyranoHealth, an app that offers immersive, comprehensive training on new medical equipment for frontline workers. AppleWhile it may seem odd to add a layer of technology between patient and surgeon, that already exists in many cases. Part of what surgical training is, especially for laparoscopic surgery, is disassociation of what your hands are doing with what your eyes are seeing, says Broderick. You have to make hand movements that do certain gestures on the inside that might not be the same as what youre doing outside of the body. But with this, I can position the monitor really closer down on top of the operative anatomy. And it feels much more natural with how my hands are moving. And that setup doesnt need to change from room to room since the monitors exist inside the spatial computing environment.Instant replayPracticing doctors have also embraced spatial computing for continued learning. Reviewing surgeries after the procedure can take up a lot of time, says Tommy Korn, a Sharp HealthCare ophthalmologist and one of the biggest Apple Vision Pro proponents in the medical field. It takes about 12 minutes. But now, AI software can actually parse it and allows me to jump to specific points and observe them with all the other crucial data presented right along with it. Students can then look back on those surgeries and observe the process with data to contextualize it.Providers can also have their peers review a surgery with a direct feed from a tool like a 3D microscope, a tool Korn commonly uses during a procedure. It will tell me how long it takes me to do a surgery, says Korn, and I can tell if Im taking too long on one part or another. The headset can display notations, timers, synced vital signs, notes, and other data that makes the review sessions more productive. The Vision Pro headsets used in universities and operating rooms are the same models you could pick up off the shelf at the Apple store, and thats a crucial part of Apples plan for the device. We make Vision Pro, Apples Susan Prescott explains. There are software differences that most consumers dont need, like MDM [multiple device management] or VPN, but the Vision Pro is the same for everyone. This single SKU approach may contribute to the Vision Pros somewhat tumultuous path in the consumer market, where the $3,500 price tag and unfamiliar ecosystem have led to reports of slower-than-expected sales. And while the consumer market varies broadly from the enterprise customers, some advantages come with a consistent product across all users. The first variable is patient recognition. Every instrument in an operating room or any medical facility can look scary or intimidating. When a doctor puts on a Vision Pro, patients may recognize it as a device they tried in the store. How scary can a device be once youve played a fun AR robot board game on it?Apps like Cinematic Reality from Siemens Healthineers offer access to detailed, high-res anatomical scans that can be used for training and education. Its real medical data, but its presented in the slick, intuitive way youd expect from a consumer-oriented app.The Siemens Healthineers Cinematic Reality app provides detailed interactive models. Siemens HealthineersBroderick clearly explains the procedure to each patient before getting their consent. Weve showed them pictures of how it kind of looks in the OR and what it would look like in the headset, he says. I think weve had one patient who was just very nervous about the surgery and didnt want to do anything different than what has already been practiced in the past, but everybody else has been all on board and super comfortable with it. Putting the headset on the patient is an effective way to get patients on board. From the providers standpoint, having a single device is crucial for standardizing research and building on a hardware platform that wont change quickly and require hasty, expensive upgrades lest they linger on outdated and insecure systems. A shocking number of medical facilities and programs still rely on wildly outdated hardware and software (including Windows XP).The future of spatial computing in the medical fieldWith just a year in the wild, the Apple Vision Pro is still in its relative infancy, but many providers see potential use cases that havent been tried yet. Broderick sees potential for continued mentoring, even during a procedure. If a surgeons wearing a headset and gets in a jam, they can phone a friend and that video feed could still be seen by that expert surgeon and provide feedback, he explains. Or a surgeon could rewatch a surgery with a colleague after the fact for further analysis.Broderick also sees the potential in overlaying medical imaging over a view of the real world. So to be able to take CT scans or images and create three-dimensional models that you can then overlay on real anatomy could really guide surgery, he says. You could see it as like a surgery by numbers or a paint-by-numbers situation that could be incredible in the future. While apps and AI guidance will play a large role in spatial computings entry into the medical field, Apple and the providers doing the testing are confident that these technologies arent set out to replace providers with automation. The AI might make some suggestions or streamline some processes, Korn explains. But ultimately, the doctor or the clinician or, in this case, the human being still has control. Like the other robots in the operating room, theyre there as tools. The Spatial Computing Center of Excellence at its Innovation and Education Center on Sharps corporate campus is now officially open, and UCSDalong with a litany of other universities and institutionsplans to continue the field research into Vision Pro and spatial computing as a whole. According to Prescott, Apple is listening to the feedback coming from this research and acting on it faster than usual. Weve already done three updates to the software on Vision Pro, which is a pretty rapid pace for us, she says. Each update adds features requested by users in the real world. And with every update, those virtual cadavers will only get more realistic.

  • Dredd, now on Max, is the violent superhero thriller the MCU wishes it could make
    www.polygon.com
I dont know if youve heard this recently, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting darker. Deadpool & Wolverine was the MCUs first R-rated movie, its been trying to make a bloody and violent Blade movie happen for going on a decade now, and everyone behind the scenes of Disney Plus new Daredevil show cant stop talking about how violent and dark it is. In other words, now that it isnt at its peak cultural powers, the MCU is desperate to prove that it can be more than just shiny superheroes sarcastically saving the day. But now that Dredd is on Max, its a great time to remind yourself of how great a truly grimy, R-rated superhero movie can be, and why Disney will never have the guts to pull it off.Dredd became a cult classic almost immediately after its 2012 release, and its easy to see why. The movie follows Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) as he tries to lay down the law in the futuristic hellscape known as Mega-City One. One day, Dredd gets stuck showing around a rookie Judge candidate (Olivia Thirlby), who happens to be a mutant with psychic powers, when he is suddenly tasked with investigating a homicide at the Peach Trees apartment building. The massive, 200-story building turns out to be the home of the horrific Ma-Ma Clan, and Dredd and his trainee have to wage a bloody fight to the top of the tower to take Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her drug-dealing goons out.Written and apparently directed by Ex Machinas Alex Garland (though Pete Travis gets the official directors credit), the first thing that stands out about Dredd is the effectiveness and effortlessness of its world-building. An opening voiceover gives us all the setup we need about Mega-City: Its streets are filled with horrible violence, and the Judges are the equally violent protectors of those streets. From there, the movie instantly descends into grisly B-movie action, gnarly kills, and fittingly disgusting sets, which all perfectly set the vibe for the movies comic book world.Every part of Dredd feels finely tuned around its singular tone. The hallways of the Peach Trees are gross, the paint-chipped walls are lined with trash, and the regular civilians look the other way as soon as gang members darken their doors. The whole movie is dirty in an over-the-top way that helps perfectly set the stage for a world that asks the Judges to be ultra-violent and incredibly scary, in comical metal masks while they wander the streets, ready to shoot anyone that looks at them wrong. Its an objectively silly and ridiculous premise, but where Dredd separates itself from the MCUs recent offerings is by never winking once at itself. Marvel movies, especially over the last few years, have seemed ashamed of the comic books theyre based on, constantly joking about the costumes or the superhero names of characters in a desperate bid to seem cool rather than dorky. But Dredd isnt embarrassed to be a Judge Dredd movie it revels in it. Garland never lets the movie sink to the level of making sarcastic jokes about itself, because its clear he wants you to get invested in the grit and grime of the world hes creating on screen. He knows the whole premise is silly, and knows that taking that silliness seriously is part of the fun.Unsurprisingly, its when the shooting starts that Dredd really gets great. One thing thats immediately obvious, and truly wonderful, about Dredds gunfights is that they were clearly made in a pre-John Wick world, drawing its influences from a number of places instead of just the hot new action style on the block. Youll never catch me saying a bad word about John Wick, but his cinematic imitators are cheap and theyre everywhere. Including Marvel properties.Netflixs Daredevil premiered the year after the original John Wick, and its full of the buttery-smooth, balletic action that Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski, and David Leitch made famous. Its undeniably excellent when done right, but when done wrong, or used too much, it becomes frictionless and bland. The hits lose their impact and the melees lose their danger. It stops feeling like a frenzied brawl, and more like a series of guys who are scripted to be slightly less tough than our hero. Netflixs Daredevil drew way more than its fair share of action from this particular well. While we dont know just yet whether or not Daredevil: Born Again will take this same approach to its fights, it seems like a pretty safe guess, considering the legacy of the original show.Dredd, by comparison, is more like an action buffet. There are gunfights that end in a flash because Dredds just that good, but there are also brutal hand-to-hand fights, shootouts that drag on long enough to turn the set into Swiss cheese, and plenty of slow-motion kills of all varieties. Its not exactly fair to say that Dredd or his partner Anderson really ever feel like theyre in danger, but watching them dispatch their foes in a hundred different, equally bloody ways keeps the action interesting and fresh in a way thats hard to find in comic book movies these days.None of this is to say that every comic book movie needs to be Dredd. That absolutely shouldnt happen. But if Disneys really committed to upping the bloodshed and nastiness of the MCU and proving it can make superhero movies for the true actionheads in the audience, then it could do a whole lot worse than Dredd. And if youre anxiously awaiting Daredevil: Born Again, in hopes that it could reveal a darker, grimier corner of the MCU, do yourself a favor and watch Dredd while you wait.Dredd is streaming on Max, and is also available for digital rental/purchase on Amazon and Apple TV.

  • Dimension 20s Brennan and Ally have expert advice on keeping a gaming group together
    www.polygon.com
When Polygon sat down with Dimension 20 stars Brennan Lee Mulligan and Ally Beardsley last week, we mostly talked about the elephant in the arena their sold-out Madison Square Garden show, Gauntlet at the Garden. But we were curious about one more thing: What has their time with the shows core cast members (the Intrepid Heroes), their numerous spinoff seasons, and their own personal gaming lives taught them about defeating the scheduling boss, mastering the snack rotation, and keeping a group of friends gaming together for the long haul? The answer spiraled out from the serendipitous assembly of the Dimension 20 cast to simple techniques to keep a gaming table full, as well as the ancient role of ritual in preserving vital human connections. Not that we were surprised. This interview has been edited for concision and clarity.Polygon: Whats your advice on how to keep a gaming group together, professional or otherwise? You guys have careers, you have families, this is not your only gig. And thats on top of just keeping the band together, the basic, interpersonal friend stuff. Working with your friends is not always easy. How do you navigate that?Ally Beardsley: Ive been on a lot of sets, Ive had a lot of work friends. I feel like theres a type of personality that wants to bond through complaining or being negative. Maybe that feels truthful, or a fun way to pass the time. And Ive never even been in an improv group [like this] where every single person is committed to not talking about whats wrong, and really committed to keeping the vibes positive and grateful. Theres something very special about this group of seven, I feel.Brennan Lee Mulligan: Its really true. I mean, yeah, at a certain point, theres nothing clever to say. We just won the lottery. Finding each other was a miracle, and getting the show was a miracle. For people that are looking to keep their home game going I ran a 14-year home game that only ended because we wanted to give the campaign the proper ending. I was becoming a father, and it felt [like the right] time. Rather than having it fizzle after 14 years, which would be catastrophic, Lets send it off in style!I would say there is this attitude that people take [with increasing and not entirely performative venom] and its so disrespectful and its so childish. Where youll see people that are too cool for school, and they come along and they go, [whining] Why do we need a poker game? Why do we need D&D? Just text. If you want to hang, just text! Why dont you shut up, OK?! People need ritual. They need ceremony. They need structure. Who are you to defy thousands of years of maypole dances and bowling leagues and fucking all of it?Beardsley: Totally.Mulligan: The structure of play facilitates community. You need a little box to put the love in. And I think that thats real! And if it makes you feel weird, like, Shouldnt we just have the wherewithal to fucking hang? No, youre not gonna. You need a weird little game.Beardsley: You need a weird little game. With some snacks.Mulligan: Someones got to put it out, someones got to send the Doodle.Beardsley: I think its also cool Ive talked to a lot of friends when we have board game nights where you check in on bandwidth and its like, OK, were not going to play the game that takes five hours. You can have it make sense for your life, you can do check-ins and morph what the hang is going to look like so you can keep it going.Mulligan: And I would say, flexibility, but also flexibility with some resilience to flakiness. Someone cant make it last-minute? Still do it, have a contingency. One time, when someone couldnt make it to our 14-year home game it was the kind of campaign where without one person there, it makes no sense to play. So we did a related one-shot in that world with brand-new characters built that weekend.Because its a death spiral. Someone flakes and we say, All right, well, lets push it off to next week. Next week rolls around, the day before, Hey guys, are we sure were doing it? And someones feeling a little under the weather, so theyre like, Ahh, I dont think I can do it tomorrow. And then people go, Im clearing my Thursday evenings for a thing that never happens. And it falls apart. Do it. Even if someone cant make it, get together.
