Apple TV+ is over five years old now, and in its early days series were rarely canceledbut thats started to change. The cancellation Ive been most disappointed by is Schmigadoon!, but now it seems the show is getting new life thanks to a stage adaptation.Schmigadoon! stage adaptation just opened in Washington D.C.Schmigadoon! ran for two seasons on Apple TV+, and was gearing up for its third when it was canceled early last year. Despite the third season being fully written, including 25 new songs, Apple decided not to renew it.Now, however, a stage production has just debuted at Washington D.C.s Kennedy Center for a limited run.Per Entertainment Weekly, the stage adaptation features some new songs, including at least one that was written for the TV show but ultimately cut.Cinco Paul, the Apple TV+ series showrunner, is the man behind the stage version too, which is based on the events of season 1.When asked whether the already-written season 3 will ever see the light of day, perhaps as a stage production or in some other form, Paul replied:There have been some talks about it. Most of the movement is inside my heart, but Im not giving up. Im really proud of the work that all of us in the writers room did, and I think the fans would really love it. Take heart in the fact that I have not given up and there are other people that are fans of the show who would also love to see that happen. You just never know; life is long.Schmigadoon! has two seasons available on Apple TV+, and if youre in the D.C. area and want to see the stage show, you can find more information here.Apple TV+ isavailable for $9.99 per monthand features hit TV shows and movies likeTed Lasso,Severance,The Morning Show,Silo, andShrinking.Best Apple TV and Home accessoriesAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Character.AI Says Its Made Huge Changes to Protect Underage Users, But Its Emailing Them to Recommend Conversations With AI Versions of School Shooters
    futurism.com
In December, we published an investigation into a particularly grim phenomenon on Character.AI, an AI startup with $2.7 billion in backing from Google: a huge number of minor-accessible botson its platform based on the real-life perpetrators and victims of school shootings, designed to roleplay scenes of horrific carnage. The company didn't respond to our request for comment at the time, but it dismissed our reporting in a statement to Forbes, claiming that the "Characters have been removed from the platform."It's true that the company pulled down the exact school shooter chatbots we specifically flagged, but it left many more online. In fact, it continued recommending the ghoulish bots to underage users. Earlier last month, an email we'd used to register a Character.AI account as a 14-year-old received an alarming new message."Vladislav Ribnikar sent you a message," read the subject line. When we opened the email, we were greeted with a bright blue button inviting us to view the dispatch the AI had "sent" us. We clicked the button, and were met by a roleplay scenario."You are in the grade 8 class in Vladislav Ribnikar," it read. The botthen listed the first names of several "classmates," starting with the name "Kosta."We were stunned. Vladislav Ribnikar is the name of the Belgrade, Serbia primary school where ten people nine young students, almost all girls, along with an adult security guard were murdered by a classmate in 2023. The then-13-year-old mass shooter's name was Kosta Kecmanovi. The other names listed by the chatbot, we realized, were the first names of the eight young girls that Kecmanovi killed. We had briefly interacted with this bot during our previous reporting, using our account listed as belonging to a 14-year-old user. And now, weeks later, here was Character.AI in the inbox of the email associated with that account imploring a presumed teenager to engage with a chatbot designed to roleplay scenarios based on a horrific site of real-world school violence, complete with the names of slain children. The disturbing notification calls into question the company's recent pledges to prioritize and strengthen its safety guardrails around the safety of underage users. Has Character.AI carried those promised safety measures into its marketing efforts which, based on the email we received, are directly targeting minors?Character.AI is currently facing two lawsuits filed on behalf of afamily in Florida and two families in Texas alleging that its AI-powered chatbots sexually groomed and emotionally abused multiple minors. This abuse, the families claim, caused their minor children to suffer mental and emotional breakdowns, destructive behavioral changes, and physical violence. One young boy, a 14-year-old in Florida, died by suicide last spring after engaging in extensive, sexually and emotionally intimate interactions with Character.AI bots.Google, which is tied to Character.AI through cloud computing investmentsand a $2.7 billion cash infusion that reportedly served as a lifeline for the chatbot startup and involved hiring its high-profile personnel, who now work on AI at the search giant, is also named as a defendant in the suits. (Google has said in response to questions about its relationship to Character.AI that "Google and Character AI are completely separate, unrelated companies and Google has never had a role in designing or managing their AI model or technologies, nor have we used them in our products.")These various promises were crystallized in a December blog post titled "How Character.AI Prioritizes Teen Safety," published on the heels of the announcement of the second lawsuit, in which Character.AI declared that it had "rolled out a suite of new safety features across nearly every aspect of our platform, designed especially with teens in mind." The promised features included the tightening of content filters, restriction of minors from certain content and characters, and a feature that alerts users when they've spent an hour on the site.As it stands, though, those purported safety measures have been implemented to questionable effect. After all, the Vladislav Ribnikar bot wasn't a new or niche character; before we flagged it to Character.AI, it had amassed hundreds of thousands of chats with users. The platform is still hosting numerous chatbots based on perpetrators and victims of the Belgrade shooting and other school massacres, even though we notified Character.AI of the issue over a month ago.And that's just one side of the company's moderation obstacles; its capacity to effectively screen and restrict inappropriate behavior and interactions between bots and minor users is another issue entirely. (These issues of content moderation and AI filters are backdropped by larger concerns around whether Character.AI and similar platforms hosting emotive, anthropomorphic AI chatbots are safe, or even well-studied, places for children and adolescents to spend time in the first place.)It seems these gaps in platform safety and moderation guardrails have seeped into Character.AI's direct marketing efforts to keep users, minors included, coming back to the platform. We reached out to Character.AI with a list of questions about this story, but didn't hear back. Soon after we got in touch, the Vladislav Ribikar bot was deactivated. But the company left the profile for its creator online, where it's still displaying yet more profiles based on the Serbian shooting, its perpetrator, and its victims.Last week, Character.AI announced its "support" of the Inspired Internet Pledge, a voluntary commitment created by the Boston Children's Hospital Digital Wellness Lab that urges digital companies to unite with the "common goal of making the internet a safer and healthier place for everyone, especially young people.""Our goal at Character.AI is to provide an entertaining and safe space for our community," Character.AI declared in a blog post, "allowing the over 20 million people who use the platform each month to use our technology as a tool to supercharge their creativity and imagination."A few days after making this pledge, Character.AI filed to dismiss the lawsuit brought by the mother of the teenager who took his life, arguing that the First Amendment protects "speech allegedly resulting in suicide."Share This Article

  • What Is Attack Surface Management?
    thehackernews.com
Feb 03, 2025The Hacker NewsAttack Surface ManagementAttack surfaces are growing faster than security teams can keep up to stay ahead, you need to know what's exposed and where attackers are most likely to strike. With cloud adoption dramatically increasing the ease of exposing new systems and services to the internet, prioritizing threats and managing your attack surface from an attacker's perspective has never been more important. In this guide, we look at why attack surfaces are growing and how to monitor and manage them properly with tools like Intruder. Let's dive in.What is your attack surface?First, it's important to understand what we mean when we talk about an attack surface. An attack surface is the sum of your digital assets that are 'reachable' by an attacker whether they are secure or vulnerable, known or unknown, in active use or not.You can also have both internal and external attack surfaces - imagine for example a malicious email attachment landing in a colleague's inbox, vs a new FTP server being put online. Your external attack surface changes continuously over time, and includes digital assets that are on-premises, in the cloud, in subsidiary networks, and in third-party environments. In short, your attack surface is anything that a hacker can attack. What is attack surface management?Attack surface management (ASM) is the process of discovering these assets and services and reducing or minimizing their exposure to prevent hackers exploiting them. Exposure can mean two things: current vulnerabilities, such as missing patches or misconfigurations that reduce the security of the services or assets. But it can also mean exposure to future vulnerabilities or determined attacks.Take for example an admin interface like cPanel, or a firewall administration page these may be secure against all known current attacks today, but a vulnerability could easily be discovered in the software tomorrow in which case it would immediately become a significant risk. So while traditional vulnerability management processes would say "wait until a vulnerability is detected and then remediate it", attack surface management would say "get that firewall admin panel off the internet before it becomes a problem!".That's not to mention that having a firewall admin panel exposed to the internet opens it up to other attacks, regardless of a vulnerability being discovered. For example, if an attacker discovers some admin credentials elsewhere, they could potentially reuse those credentials against this admin interface, and this is often how attackers expand their access across networks. Equally, they may just try a sustained "low and slow" password guessing exercise which goes under the radar but eventually yields results. To highlight this point in particular, ransomware gangs were reported in 2024 targeting VMware vSphere environments exposed to the internet. By exploiting a vulnerability in these servers, they were able to gain access and encrypt virtual hard disks of critical infrastructure to demand huge ransoms. It was reported there are over two thousand vSphere environments still exposed. So for multiple reasons, reducing your attack surface today makes you harder to attack tomorrow. The need for attack surface management The challenges of asset managementSo, if a significant part of attack surface management is reducing exposure to possible future vulnerabilities by removing unnecessary services and assets from the internet, the first step is to know what you have.Often considered the poor relation of vulnerability management, asset management has traditionally been a labor intensive, time-consuming task for IT teams. Even when they had control of the hardware assets within their organization and network perimeter, it was still fraught with problems. If just one asset was missed from the asset inventory, it could evade the entire vulnerability management process and, depending on the sensitivity of the asset, could have far reaching implications for the business. This was the case in the Deloitte breach in 2016, where an overlooked administrator account was exploited, exposing sensitive client data. When companies expand through mergers and acquisitions too, they often take over systems they're not even aware of take the example of telco TalkTalk which was breached in 2015 and up to 4 million unencrypted records were stolen from a system they didn't even know existed. The shift to cloudToday, it's even more complicated. Businesses are migrating to cloud platforms like Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and AWS, which allow development teams to move and scale quickly when needed. But this puts a lot of the responsibility for security directly into the hands of the development teams shifting away from traditional, centralized IT teams with change control processes. While this is great for speed of development, it creates a visibility gap, and so cyber security teams need ways to keep up with the pace. A modern solutionAttack surface management if anything is the recognition that asset management and vulnerability management must go hand-in-hand, but companies need tools to enable this to work effectively.A good example: an Intruder customer once told us we had a bug in our cloud connectors - our integrations that show which cloud systems are internet-exposed. We were showing an IP address that he didn't think he had. But when we investigated, our connector was working fine the IP address was in an AWS region he didn't know was in use, somewhat out of sight in the AWS console. This shows how attack surface management can be as much about visibility as vulnerability management.Where does the attack surface stop? If you use a SaaS tool like HubSpot, they will hold a lot of your sensitive customer data, but you wouldn't expect to scan them for vulnerabilities this is where a third-party risk platform comes in. You would expect HubSpot to have many cyber security safeguards in place and you would assess them against these. Where the lines become blurred is with external agencies. Maybe you use a design agency to create a website, but you don't have a long-term management contract in place. What if that website stays live until a vulnerability is discovered and it gets breached? In these instances, third party and supplier risk management software and insurance help to protect businesses from issues such as data breaches or noncompliance.6 ways to secure your attack surface with IntruderBy now, we've seen why attack surface management is so essential. The next step is turning these insights into concrete, effective actions. Building an ASM strategy means going beyond known assets to find your unknowns, adapting to a constantly changing threat landscape, and focusing on the risks that will have the greatest impact on your business. Here are six ways Intruder helps you put this into action:1. Discover unknown assetsIntruder continuously monitors for assets that are easy to lose track of but can create exploitable gaps in your attack surface, such as subdomains, related domains, APIs, and login pages. Learn more about Intruder's attack surface discovery methods.2. Search for exposed ports and servicesUse Intruder's Attack Surface View (shown below) to find what's exposed to the internet. With a quick search, you can check your perimeter for the ports and services that should and, more importantly, shouldn't be accessible from the internet.3. Find exposures (that others miss)Intruder provides greater coverage than other ASM solutions by customizing the output of multiple scanning engines. Check for over a thousand attack surface specific issues, including exposed admin panels, publicly-facing databases, misconfigurations, and more.4. Scan your attack surface whenever it changesIntruder continuously monitors your attack surface for changes and initiates scans when new services are detected. By integrating Intruder with your cloud accounts, you can automatically detect and scan new services to reduce blind spots and ensure all exposed cloud assets are covered within your vulnerability management program.5. Stay ahead of emerging threatsWhen a new critical vulnerability is discovered, Intruder proactively initiates scans to help secure your attack surface as the threat landscape evolves. With Rapid Response, our security team checks your systems for the latest issues being exploited faster than automated scanners can, alerting you immediately if your organization is at risk.6. Prioritize the issues that matter mostIntruder helps you focus on the vulnerabilities that pose the greatest risk to your business. For example, you can view the likelihood of your vulnerabilities being exploited within the next 30 days and filter by "known" and "very likely" to generate an actionable list of the most significant risks to address.Get started with attack surface managementIntruder's EASM platform is solving one of the most fundamental problems in cybersecurity: the need to understand how attackers see your organization, where they are likely to break in, and how you can identify, prioritize and eliminate risk. Book some time in with our team to find out how Intruder can help protect your attack surface.Found this article interesting? This article is a contributed piece from one of our valued partners. • Nicolas Cage Begs Filmmakers Not to Use AI
    screencrush.com
Nicolas Cage has begged other actors not to let AI manipulate their performances. The Face/Off star took to the stage at the Saturn Awards in Universal City, California on Sunday to accept the Best Actor in a film prize for his role in Dream Scenario, and after thanking his director Kristoffer Borgli, Cage went on to issue a plea to fellow screen stars not to let anyone use artificial intelligence to tinker with their art.He told the audience: Thank you for recognizing Dream Scenario. This is in fact one of my favorite movies Ive ever made ... I have to thank Kristoffer Borgli for his direction, his writing, his editing and for creating this incredibly disturbing but hilarious world that he dreamt up.But there is another world that is also disturbing me. Its happening right now around all of us: The new AI world.Cage went on to add: I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us. Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us ... That is a dead end if an actor lets one AI robot manipulate his or her performance even a little bit, an inch will eventually become a mile and all integrity, purity and truth of art will be replaced by financial interests only. We cant let that happen.Warner Bros.Warner Bros.loading...The actor concluded: The job of all art in my view, film performance included, is to hold a mirror to the external and internal stories of the human condition through the very human thoughtful and emotional process of recreation ... A robot cant do that. If we let robots do that, it will lack all heart and eventually lose edge and turn to mush. There will be no human response to life as we know it. It will be life as robots tell us to know it.I say, protect yourselves from AI interfering with your authentic and honest expressions.During his speech, Cage also paid tribute to late moviemaker David Lynch, who died last month aged 78.He said: The enthusiasm in this room is not like any other award show and you remind me of one of my greatest collaborators, David Lynch. When I was doing Wild at Heart, I was a very serious, young actor and I said, David, is it okay if I have fun on this movie? He said, Buddy not only is it okay, its necessary.Get our free mobile appThe 12 Weirdest Reality Shows Of All TimeReality TV has given us some very strange series through the years and these 12 are the strangest weve ever seen.Filed Under: Nicolas CageCategories: Movie News

  • Best Streaming Services of 2025
    www.cnet.com
Our Experts Written by Kourtnee Jackson, Ty Pendlebury Our expert, award-winning staff selects the products we cover and rigorously researches and tests our top picks. If you buy through our links, we may get a commission. Reviews ethics statement How we test What to consider Content Originals, kids' titles and back catalogs all make a difference when deciding which streaming service is worth your money, along with the availability of new releases and blockbuster movies. Examine the library offerings of each streamer to determine whether they carry all episodes of shows you enjoy, movies, older titles or a selection of foreign content. Price Now that most streaming platforms offer ad-based options, you can choose whether you want to pay to watch without commercials, or if tolerating ads is better for your budget. Monthly prices start around $6-$7 and go up to $23, but you can also consider rotating your services to pay less overall for streaming TV in a year. Simultaneous streams With any streaming service, you'll want to know how many screens you can watch at a time. For example, Netflix's ad-based plan allows two simultaneous streams, but you have to upgrade to the premium version if your family needs four screens.
