In BriefPosted:7:51 AM PST February 3, 2025Image Credits:Universal Archive/Universal Images Group / Getty ImagesThe Beatles won a Grammy last night, thanks to AIThe Beatles AI-assisted track Now and Then won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance on Sunday night, marking the first time that a song of its kind has taken home the award. No, Paul McCartney did not use AI to create some creepy LennonGPT bot. Instead, he used noise reduction systems to clean up a decades-old, low quality piano demo from his late bandmate. This technology is similar to what video call providers like Zoom, FaceTime, and Google Meet use to block out unwanted background noise and deliver a clearer sound. The surviving Beatles first tried to fix up on Lennons demo in the 90s, but the technology available at the time couldnt quite extract Lennons muffled vocals. In 2022, after learning how the filmmakers behind archival Beatles documentary Get Back were using new audio isolation techniques to make poorly recorded demos listenable, they revisited Now and Then.Topics

Soft & SturdyArchmongers reworks a terrace house into a materially inventive residence for a studio founderByBridget Goldberg February 3, 2025Interiors, International (French+Tye)SHAREWalking out of Homerton train station in Londons Hackney neighborhood, one is immediately surrounded by blocks of postwar social housing. The East End borough, home to Homerton as well as Hoxton and Shoreditch, has many reputations: For over ten years, it has been a hipster paradise teeming with trendy cafes, galleries, converted studio flats, and glamorous houses, especially near Homertons Chatsworth Road. But as recently as the early 2000s, it was one of Londons roughest areas. A row of nondescript, 1970s split-level terrace houses occupies a block among this diverse mix, and one of these houses has been overhauled by local architect Johan Hybschmann for himself, his wife, and their son. Hybschmann runs a small practice calledArchmongersthat he founded with his university classmate Margaret Bursa in 2013. The two studied together at The Bartlett School of Architecture, at University College London, and spent a few years apart working at larger firms before teaming up. The name of our studio is a riff off fishmonger, like youre mongering for architecture, he toldAN Interior. We started our practice by doing our own houses quickly. Then we could show them. We were lucky enough to have been able to do that. The proof is in the pudding: the U.K.s design-led realtor Modern House has listed and sold five of their residential retrofits.Read more on aninteriormag.com. LondonResidential Architecture

  • Church of the Holy Name of Jesus Rectory //1857
    buildingsofnewengland.com
In 1857, the same year that the Diocese of Springfield built the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus in Chicopee, they also broke groundon an adjacent rectory, a residence for its priest. Like the church, the brick rectory was possibly designed by Irish-born architect,Patrick Keely. The Italianate style building originally was capped by a shallow hipped roof, but a renovation in 1871 added the mansard roof, two-story bays, and the portico at the entrance. The building served as the church rectory for over a century but eventually closed by 2011, and the future of the site was uncertain. Luckily, thePolish Center of Discovery and Learninghave rented and occupied the rectory, serving as an important cultural institution educating and collecting to tell the story of Polish history in Chicopee and beyond. Fitting that many early-arriving Poles in the late 19thcentury to Chicopee attended this church before establishing their own.

  • Government sets out cyber security practice code to stoke AI growth
    www.computerweekly.com
Patryk Kosmider - FotoliaNewsGovernment sets out cyber security practice code to stoke AI growthThe government has set out a cyber security code of practice for developers to follow when building AI productsByBrian McKenna,Enterprise Applications EditorPublished: 03 Feb 2025 14:30 The government has set out an artificial intelligence (AI)-focused cyber security code of practice for UK businesses, which it describes it as a world first. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology said the standard will protect AI systems from cyber attack, boost productivity and set up a global coalition to tackle a worldwide cyber skills shortage. It is the latest salvo in the governments bid to boost AI as the fuel for economic growth, repeating similar rhetoric from the previous government. The Code of Practice for the Cyber Security of AI will, said the government, help to create a global standard in the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) that sets baseline security requirements. A specific standard is needed for AI, as distinct from other forms of software, because of such security risks as data poisoning, model obfuscation, indirect prompt injection, as well as differences in the operations of data management, according to DSIT.The code will, in the governments view, back up its overall plan for change, whose elements include making kickstarting economic growth as a political priority, with an AI opportunities action planas part of that. Part of the aim of the plan is to be on a par with France, whose NationalAICommission outlined 25 recommendations for the development of an AI-driven economy in 2024.Minister for cyber security Feryal Clark said: The UK is leading the way in setting global benchmarks for secure innovation, ensuring AI is developed and deployed in an environment that protects critical systems and data which are central to delivering our plan for change. This will not only create the opportunities for businesses to thrive, secure in the knowledge that they can be better protected than ever before but support them in delivering cutting-edge AI products that drive growth, improve public services, and put Britain at the forefront of the global AI economy, she said.Read more about UK government cyber security policyWith Labour returning to 10 Downing Street after 14 years, the Computer Weekly Security Think Tank panellists share advice and wish lists for the new government.UKs cyber incident reporting law to move forward in 2025.NAO: UK government cyber resilience weak in face of mounting threats. The government has also published an implementation guide for the code. It urges developers to review the guide to confirm what requirements are specified for different types of AI systems. The code is underpinned by 13 secure software development principles. These include designing AI systems for security, as well as functionality and performance, enabling human responsibility for AI systems, securing infrastructures and software supply chains, and ensuring proper data and model disposal. In support of the code, Ollie Whitehouse, chief technology officer at the NCSC, said: The new code of practice, which we have produced in collaboration with global partners, will not only help enhance the resilience of AI systems against malicious attacks, but foster an environment in which UK AI innovation can thrive. The UK is leading the way by establishing this security standard, fortifying our digital technologies, benefiting the global community and reinforcing our position as the safest place to live and work online. The code was published at the end of a week when the National Audit Office published a report on UK government cyber resilience that found 58 critical government IT systems, assessed in 2024, had significant gaps in cyber resilience, and that the government does not know how vulnerable at least 228 legacy IT systems, across central departments, are to cyber attack. It also found that one in three cyber security roles in government were vacant or filled by temporary and so more expensive staff in 2023-24.The code will be submitted to the European Telecommunications Standards Institutes Securing AI Committee, where it will, the UK government said, be used to develop a global standard. The UK has also played a part, it said, in the launch of an International Coalition on Cyber Security Workforces, alongside Japan, Singapore and Canada. The coalition which came out of a summit held at Wilton Park in West Sussex in September 2024 will, it is said, help countries work together to tackle cyber threats and address the global cyber skills gap.In The Current Issue:World Economic Forum: Digital supply chains at risk as world faces two years of turbulenceData sovereignty and security in the UKDownload Current IssueConfluent: Shifting the paradigm to (real-time) data engineering CW Developer NetworkVision for the technology landscape of 2025 Data MattersView All Blogs
