  • Nvidias new RTX 5080 and 5090 graphics cards are sold out everywhere
    www.polygon.com
In less than an hour after going on sale last week, Nvidias latest GeForce RTX 5080 and 5090 graphics cards have all disappeared from physical and online retailers across the U.S. The inventory dried up so fast that it seems like Nvidia may not have had many to sell in the first place, which has prompted people to start calling it a paper launch. Before the launch last week, Nvidias head of GeForce community Tim Adams warned everyone that the new GPUs might be hard to find: We expect significant demand for the GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 and believe stock-outs may happen. And they absolutely were, because both 50-series graphics cards sold out on Amazon, Micro Center, Best Buy, and Newegg as soon as they went live. Newegg said it experienced an overwhelming response and sold its inventory within minutes, according to a news release last Friday.PC hardware YouTuber Gamers Nexus reported that one of the biggest U.S. system integrators, or companies that put together pre-built PCs, had a single RTX 5090 on launch day and only received a small shipment of them later that same day. Another company had 20 cards that it sold via pre-builts in three minutes.A banner at the top of the Micro Center website says its working hard to restock more Nvidia RTX 50-series GPUs, and to check back regularly. But it might be a while before theyre available again. U.K. retailer Overclockers UK doesnt expect to have the RTX 5080 again for two to six weeks, and the RTX 5090 for another three to 16 weeks. A Reddit user who managed to get an RTX 5090 at Best Buy isnt expected to get it until Feb. 21, which suggests US retailers are in the same boat.Whether or not Nvidia had any cards to sell in the first place remains unclear, but the demand is clearly high for the 50-series. According to the Steam hardware survey results for January 2025, most of its users play games on RTX 3060s, a GPU two generations behind. Modern games like Dragon Age: The Veilguard still recommend older GPUs, however upcoming games like Avowed and Monster Hunter: Wilds are starting to recommend 40-series cards to utilize ray-tracing. For all the people who felt the supply shortages and price inflation during the early years of COVID, this wouldve been a great time to upgrade your graphics card if there were any left to buy.

  • All pizza oven recipes in Hello Kitty Island Adventure
    www.polygon.com
The pizza oven is one of the many cooking stations in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, allowing you to cook up delicious zas for the island inhabitants.Notably, you can use the upgraded pizza oven to cook up the Ultimate Joke Pizza, which is Badtz-marus favorite gift to get. Youll get dough for the oven from Retsuko after gifting her items (which surely you are doing everyday, right?) and you can upgrade the oven by befriending Retsuko further.Below, we explain where to find the pizza oven, how to upgrade the pizza oven, and all the pizza oven recipes available in Hello Kitty Island Adventure.Where to find the pizza ovenThe pizza oven is on Mount Hothead, a bit east of the main fast-travel point. You can trek over to the pizza oven pretty early in the game, just from going all the way around, passing through Spooky Swamp and Gemstone Mountain. Its easier to access if youve unlocked swimming, but you dont need to do that. How to unlock the pizza oven upgradeYoull need to hit Friendship Level 9 with Retsuko in order to use an additional ingredient in the pizza oven. Hitting this requirement quickly can be tough as her liked and loved gifts are pretty hard to get early on. We settled with giving her toasted almonds (found on the ground around Mount Hothead) and ingots (crafted from iron, which is also found around Mount Hothead) during the early-game.You can also expedite this process by using items like Friendship Bouquets and Friendship Blossoms to gift Retsuko more without having to wait until the next day (or time travel). All pizza oven recipesBelow, we list all of the permanent pizza recipes in Hello Kitty Island Adventure.Note that there is a limited-time recipe, the 50th Anniversary Pizza Cookie but its not counted as part of the collections page and you cant make it consistently, as it uses a limited-time material, so we dont have it on our list. There are also multiple recipes for the same pizza, but they are registered individually in your collections. For example, using apple or banana will both give you a Fruit Pizza, but it will register as Fruit Pizza Recipe (Apple) and Fruit Pizza Recipe (Banana) in your collections, so you may want to make all of these to collect all the recipes fully.Ingredient #1Ingredient #2PizzaAny ingredient not listed below.PizzaCoral MilkAlfredo PizzaEggBreakfast PizzaCandy CloudDessert PizzaSugarkelpDessert PizzaSwampmallowDessert PizzaAppleFruit PizzaBananaFruit PizzaStrawberryFruit PizzaStarfruitFruit PizzaPineapplePineapple PizzaMagma BloomSpicy PizzaCinna BloomSpicy PizzaMoon CheeseThree Cheese PizzaToasted AlmondToasty PizzaTofuTofu PizzaSpinipVeggie PizzaPumpkinVeggie PizzaSpinipTofuEverything PizzaMoon CheeseCoral MilkQuattro Formaggi PizzaSpinipCoral MilkSpinip Alfredo PizzaPineappleTofuUltimate Joke Pizza

  • The Beatles' 'Now and Then' Was Made With AI (and That's Okay)
    lifehacker.com
I happened to catch some of the Grammy Awards last night, and while pop, rap, and country definitely took center stage, it was the Best Rock Performance category that most caught my attention. The award went to The Beatles for their song "Now and Then," which is a confusing sentence in 2025. You might be aware The Beatles operated largely in the 1960s, not the 2020s, and seeing as only half the group is still alive, winning a Grammy for a new song might sound a bit strange. Nevertheless, the song is newat least, as new as a Beatles song can be. The track dropped towards the end of 2023, and is built from a demo John Lennon recorded shortly before his death. In the '90s, the living three Beatles members (Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison) attempted to finish the song, but never completed it, as the original audio quality was too poor. Modern technology, however, made it possible to create the product you hear today.I love The Beatles, but the song itself isn't really what I paid attention to. (I didn't really give it much thought until Sunday.) Instead, an announcer made it clear the song was produced with AI, a statement that, in 2025, elicits anything from an eye roll to a heavy sigh from this tech editor. AI-generated music is very much a reality today. While there are some convincing results from these AI-generated tools, there are plenty of tells to look out for. The idea that The Beatles would put out a song with some level of AI generation didn't sit well with me, and I bet many others out there. However, it's important to note the difference between AI-generated, and AI-produced. They sound the same, but they're not. I want to be clear: "Now and Then" is not an AI-generated song: No one is tapping AI to recreate the voice of John Lennon to make another award-winning song. Not that kind of AIAI doesn't just mean the artificially generated content we're all accustomed to. While it feels like AI took over our lives with the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022, companies have embedded the tech in our products and services for a lot longer than that. AI is, perhaps, a bit of a misnomer. In this context, machine learning is a bit more accurate. Machine learning is, very simply, when a program is able to adapt and grow based on the data it experiencessimilar to how our minds work. You feed the program training data, and it adjusts its assumptions and outputs accordingly. While the actual process is much more complicated than this, machine learning empowers programs to do some great things. One of those things is audio track separation: Part of the reason the "Now and Then" project was shelved was because they couldn't properly mix the song, since Lennon's original recording was so rough. But using an audio editing tool powered with machine learning, producers were able to separate Lennon's vocals from the piano. Neither the piano nor the vocals were generated with AIrather, the tool was able to break these tracks apart, so producers, along with the two living Beatles, could build upon them to record, mix, and ship a completed song. McCartney posted as much on X the summer before releasing the song: This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. For many reasons, I'm happy this "AI Beatles song" didn't artificially bring back John Lennon. It's genuinely sweet to have a song Lennon started decades ago, properly finished by his former bandmates, with Lennon's son accepting the award on the band's behalf. The music video, on the other hand, definitely pushes things a bit further, juxtaposing archival footage of deceased Beatles members John Lennon and George Harrison alongside current footage of McCartney and Starr. (It was produced by Peter Jackson, who both produced Now and Then, as well as the 2021 Beatles documentary Get Back.) Still, it's more weird than anything else, and certainly isn't a product purporting to represent realityas opposed to much of the AI-generated content you encounter in the wild.

  • Microsoft 365 Is Raising Prices and Ditching Its Free VPN
    lifehacker.com
Paying more and getting less seems to be standard operating procedure these days. Certainly thats what Microsoft 365 (the fancy new name for Microsoft Office) users are about to experience, as the service's included VPN is being dropped as of February 28.According to a support note on the Microsoft site, the company routinely evaluate[s] the usage and effectiveness of our features and has decided that the VPN is no longer a necessary part of Microsoft 365.As VPNs go, it was only OKIn truth, its not a major loss. Microsofts VPN came with a 50GB monthly data limit and didnt allow you to trick your browser into thinking you were elsewhere in the world, making it arguably less useful than even some of the best free VPNs. It obscured your traffic, sure, but not much else.Still, its a bit of a slap in the face, as it follows the first Microsoft 365 subscription price hike in 12 years. Both the Personal and Family plans now cost $3 more per month, a roughly 43% increase. Supposedly the increases are justified by the addition of limited Copilot AI features, which used to involve paying for a $20 add-on. That add-on still exists if the limited AI credits included with the new subscriptions arent enough for you, but my fellow AI skeptics have only one way to avoid paying more for the now VPN-less service: For the next 12-months, existing subscribers can downgrade to a Microsoft 365 Personal Classic or Microsoft 365 Family Classic plan, which has all the same features as the current plans, minus AI (and the VPN, of course). The company says its "assessing the length of availability of these subscriptions, though, so they may not be around for long.New customers, meanwhile, have no choice but to go along with the new prices. On the plus side, despite its lack of a VPN, the current 365 plan does still include identity theft protection and credit monitoring.

  • The FDA and EU clear Nuance Audio, smart glasses with built-in hearing aids, for sale
    www.engadget.com
Nuance Audio, new "hearing glasses" from EssilorLuxottica, have received FDA clearance and "a CE marking under the Medical Devices regulation in the EU," making them officially ready to sell in the US and Europe. The smart glasses are essentially prescription frames with an over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid built-in. Using open-ear speakers and a beamforming microphone array, Nuance Audio can raise the volume of whoever you're speaking to, while attempting to cancel out whatever noise is going on around you. You can control the glasses with a companion app or a dedicated remote. The glasses come in only two shapes, two colors and three sizes, far fewer options than EssilorLuxottica's traditional glasses brands, or the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, but the tech seems like it could be ported to new frames down the road. Engadget deputy editor Cherlynn Low was able to try on Nuance Audio during CES 2025 and found them to be very comfortable and lightweight, though she wasn't able to adequately test their capabilities as a hearing device.Cherlynn Low for EngadgetNuance Audio is just the latest in a wave of new hearing aid-like devices that have been released since the FDA introduced its ruling on OTC hearing aids in 2022. Similar to Nuance Audio, Apple's AirPods Pro 2 now offer software-enabled hearing aid functionality, along with a built-in hearing test and a hearing protection feature for loud environments. While turning every pair of AirPods Pro 2 into a hearing aids is great from a cost-saving perspective, getting a pair of Nuance Audio frames that can also double as your prescription glasses seems potentially even more convenient.EssilorLuxottica says Nuance Audio will be available in the US in Q1. "Certain European countries" will also get the glasses in the first half of 2025, starting with Italy in Q1, and then France, Germany and the UK. The company hasn't shared official pricing for the Nuance Audio. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/wearables/the-fda-and-eu-clear-nuance-audio-smart-glasses-with-built-in-hearing-aids-for-sale-211053856.html?src=rss

  • Uber wants to make rides easier for people with service animals
    www.engadget.com
Uber rolled out a new set of features on Monday that could remove some friction for people with service animals. The company now lets handlers automatically notify drivers that they ride with a service animal. In a blog post, Chris Yoon, an Uber Product Manager, wrote that he joined Uber with a singular mission: to help expand accessibility in rideshare, including for those who rely on service animals. He says he and other blind travelers often message drivers in advance to let them know about their service animals. Todays new features can automate that for them if they choose.UberDrivers who consider refusing rides will have to think twice and then some. If the driver requests a cancelation after learning about the service animal, Uber will automatically send an in-app reminder that doing so is against not only company policy but also the law. Uber says drivers refusing rides with service animals may permanently lose access to the platform.Passengers who opt into the new features will automatically receive a message after a driver cancels, asking what happened and offering additional support. Those who dont use the feature can contact the company through the app or over the phone.UberRiders can set up the feature through the Uber app. Go to Account > Settings > Accessibility, and tap Service Animal. It will then prompt you to fill out an eligibility form and pick which parts of the feature (like notifying the driver in advance) you want to turn on.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/uber-wants-to-make-rides-easier-for-people-with-service-animals-210958456.html?src=rss
