  • lvsj Grd exhibition showcases "functional sculptures" and undulating furniture
    www.dezeen.com
Designers including Anna Maria fstedal Eng and David Taylor showed the potential of crafts-based design at experimental design platform lvsj Grd at this year's Stockholm Furniture Fair.Named after the manor house lvsj Grd, which first showed emerging design pieces as part of Stockholm Design Week in 2023, the exhibition has taken place inside the fair since last year.Among the pieces were selected works by a collection of designersHere, 10 designers showed everything from 3D-printed pieces described as "functional sculptures" by Simon Mattisson to fstedal Eng's handcrafted furniture. The design platform has become well-known in the past few years, with people getting in touch and wanting to exhibit, curator Hanna Nova Beatrice said, adding that it is deliberately curated to show a wide variety of designs.Simon Mattisson showed 3D-printed sculptures"We look for a mix of materials, a blend of different practices and a mix of different expressions," she told Dezeen."Otherwise there's a risk that everything is super crafted. The challenge is finding different stories, materials and ways of making."Undulating wooden furniture was among the crafts piecesNova Beatrice said that the concept has also enabled more niche designs, which may not initially have been made to be mass-produced, to reach a larger audience."What's been really nice is that from the two earlier editions of lvsj Grd, a lot of things have gone into production despite, having originally been designed as unique objects," she explained."We've also seen interior designers who've bought pieces to be used in their projects after seeing them at lvsj Grd. And that's how it's supposed to work, they're supposed to complement what the fair has to offer."Read: Ten unmissable exhibitions and installations at Stockholm Design Week 2025Also on show this year were pieces by Jonas Lutz' and Simon Skinner, two emerging designers who were among those spotlit in Dezeen Dispatch's feature on upcoming talent in Stockholm.Lutz' undulating wooden furniture and Skinner's glass lamps and upholstered seating, which aim to create a connection between the past and the present, exemplify the marriage between craftsmanship and more commercial production that is often seen at lvsj Grd exhibitions. The exhibition showcased upholstered furniture by Simon SkinnerTo Nova Beatrice, this is how design works today."It's about the importance of craft and about how we work today barely anyone does only industrially-produced design," she said."People move between working with their hands and working with industrial production, and the aim is to mirror that in the show. It is often a starting point for new projects."Niklas Runesson's dinner table and chairs are made from stacked walnut woodNova Beatrice, who was formerly the director of Stockholm Furniture Fair and Stockholm Design Week and is now the chief brand officer of retailerNO GA Group, believes lvsj Grd is now an important part of the fair."It's become a natural part of the fair," she said. "The first edition, when it was at the house outside of the fair, was really debated more traditional companies at the fair felt it took the attention away from them.""But last year, when it moved into the fair, people got it, and now I think everyone sees it as a complement to the fair and an important part of SFF," she concluded.Anna Maria fstedal Eng's pieces are shaped by handThe exhibition also showed work by Jenny Nordberg, Niklas Runesson, Eero Moss and Vanders Studio, as well as a selection of pieces by designers Erik Bratsberg, Staffan Holm, Mia Cullin, Studio Matti Carlson and Jon Buck. The photography is by Andy Liffner.Stockholm Design Week 2025 is taking place at various locations around the city from 3 to 9 February. • Qorgau: How Kazakhstan is Using AI to Make Roads Safer
    www.computerworld.com
Traffic management is a growing challenge for cities worldwide, requiring a balance between enforcement, efficiency, and public trust. In Kazakhstan, the Qorgau system is redefining road safety through an innovative fusion of artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision, and mobile technology. Designed to assist traffic police in real-time violation detection and enforcement, Qorgau represents a leap forward in smart policing.A digital approach to safer roadsSince its implementation, the impact has been substantial. Road accidents in Kazakhstan have decreased by 30%, and the number of injured individuals has dropped from over 500 in 2019 to 338 in 2023. At the same time, the system has streamlined the collection of traffic fines, raising compliance rates from 50.5% in 2017 to 88.1% in 2023. These improvements demonstrate the power of digital transformation in public safety.Qorgaus mobile-first approach equips traffic police with a digital tool that integrates seamlessly with the countrys broader law enforcement infrastructure. The system uses AI-driven cameras to scan traffic in real time, detect violations such as speeding, running red lights, and improper lane usage, and immediately flag offenders. The results are sent to police officers tablets, allowing for quick decision-making without unnecessary vehicle stops. This minimizes congestion and eliminates subjective enforcement, ensuring fairer and more efficient policing.Beyond enforcement, Qorgau contributes to preventive policing. The system logs vehicle movement data, helping officers identify patterns in high-risk areas and anticipate violations before they occur. This approach aligns with global smart city initiatives, where data-driven decision-making enhances public safety while reducing administrative burdens on law enforcement.Laying down the digital foundation is keyHowever, deploying such an advanced system comes with challenges. The need for 24/7 monitoring, secure data transmission, and AI-driven analytics required significant investment in digital infrastructure. Additionally, ensuring officers were properly trained to use the system was critical for its effectiveness. These challenges were addressed through close collaboration between Kazakhstans Ministry of Internal Affairs and technology partners, resulting in a fully integrated and highly efficient solution. The success of Qorgau highlights a broader global trend in intelligent transportation management. Many cities worldwide are turning to AI-powered systems to optimize traffic flow, improve air quality, and reduce road fatalities. Countries like Singapore and the UAE have pioneered similar initiatives, leveraging smart sensors and data analytics to create safer and more efficient urban environments.Looking ahead, Qorgau is poised for further expansion. Enhancements in facial recognition, automated ticketing, and AI-driven pattern analysis will further streamline operations, while the possibility of integrating the system with autonomous vehicle networks could redefine the future of road safety. As Kazakhstan continues to embrace digital transformation, Qorgau stands as a leading example of how technology can bridge the gap between enforcement and public service.Curious to learn more about Qorgau and its impact on Kazakhstans road safety?Explore the cutting-edge technology behind Qorgau and how it is shaping the future of intelligent transportation. From AI-powered enforcement to data-driven decision-making, learn how Kazakhstan is leading the way in digital road safety. • Monster Hunter Wilds Everything You Need to Know
    gamingbolt.com
A new Monster Hunter game is always an important event, especially given Capcoms output quality over the past several years with Monster Hunter World and Rise. Monster Hunter Wilds is undoubtedly the biggest entry yet, at least in terms of sheer size and scale, building off the foundations of World and taking the franchise to new heights. It launches on February 28th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, but what can you look forward to? Here are 15 new things you should know before the hunt begins anew.New and Returning MonstersRathalos and Rathian aside, Monster Hunter Wilds features plenty of returning monsters. Gypceros from Monster Hunter 1, Congalala from Monster Hunter 2 even Gravios, whos been missing since Generations Ultimate will return. However, theres a heavy assortment of newcomers as well, with the more recent additions including the spidery Lala Barina, the Brute Wyvern Quematrice, Nu Udra, an oily cephalopod, and a new Flying Wyvern, Rey Dau.New Locales RevealedThis time around, the Guild sends the Research Commission into the Forbidden Lands with the Hunter part of the Avis Unit. Their task is to investigate Arkveld, the mysterious White Wraith (and new mascot). Alongside the Windward Plains, players will venture through the Crimson Forest with its extensive foliage and Oilwell Basin, the latter more cavernous and vertically layered. Other locales have yet to be revealed, but if Monster Hunter World and Iceborne are any indication, expect a late or endgame area with its own unique ecosystem.Seamless Open StagesPerhaps the coolest aspect of Monster Hunter Wilds is the seamless traversal. Players will no longer take on quests at their base and then fly out, waiting for the locale to load. Instead, they can ride into the wide world with no loading screens. Even better, you can seamlessly travel from Windward Plains to the Scarlet Forest. How theyll respectively progress remains to be seen, but it makes Wilds feel like an open-world experience.Set Up Camp AnywhereGiven the larger size of the locales and their locations, not to mention seamlessly traversing areas, you can now set up camp anywhere. Find a peaceful spot, deploy the pop-up camp and use it like previous games campsites. However, pay attention to the zone in question if its too dangerous, your camp could be destroyed by a roaming monster.Starting Quests in the WildThe other benefit of a seamless world is starting quests out in the wild. No more need to return to base or even camp discover a monster out in the locale, and if theres a relevant quest, you can start it. Combined with carrying a second weapon to swap to when necessary, this is a game changer. Of course, those who want to stick to the traditional approach or regroup back at base can still accept quests from the Handler or quest boards.Attack Skills on WeaponsWhen optimizing your build in a Monster Hunter game, youre torn between the various skills on armor pieces, decorations, and charms/talismans. In Monster Hunter Wilds, weapons will now inherently possess attack skills like Focus, Attack Boost, and Critical Draw. Not only does this allow for more easily reaching skill thresholds, but frees up space for slotting in other skills.Wounding MonstersWounds are back, but theyre much different from World. Instead of grappling onto a monsters body part and attacking with the clutch claw to tenderize it, wounds will appear as you focus on a specific body part or area. It sounds so simple, yet its effective plus it feeds into the new Focus Strikes.Focus StrikesThe Focus system is brand new and allows for properly aiming your attacks. If youre in the middle of a combo or a True Charged Slash, you can activate Focus mode to redirect it against constantly moving monsters. However, it also highlights any wounds inflicted and feeds into a new attack type Focus Strikes. By targeting a monsters wounds and executing a Focus Strike, you can deal extensive damage and stun it for a further whooping.Improvements to Various WeaponsThe 14 weapon trees return with each offering new moves for players to leverage and master. After the first open beta, however, the Insect Glaive, Lance, Switchaxe and so on were found to be lacking. Fortunately, Capcom has confirmed improvements for all three, from Vaulting Dance on Insect Glaive to chaining Perfect Guard and Power Guard into a new move on the Lance and the Switchaxes Full Release Slash negating knockback. Hitstop has also been added to make strikes feel meatier.New Multiplayer FeaturesLobbies are getting a massive upgrade in Wilds and can now hold up to 100 players. Alongside lobby search, theres a Recommended Lobby feature to join the most popular based on your settings, per Capcom. Cross-platform play will also be available on day one, though you can turn it off.PC RequirementsWith all the added fidelity and scale, Monster Hunter Wilds PC requirements are quite hefty. The minimum requirements for playing at an upscaled 1080p/30 FPS on the Lowest settings include an Intel Core i5-10600, a Core i3-12100F or an AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super (6 GB) or an AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT(6 GB).The recommended requirements for playing at 1080p/60 FPS with frame generation and on Medium settings include a Core i5-11600K, Core i5-12400, a Ryzen 5 3600X or a Ryzen 5 5500, 16 GB RAM, and an RTX 2070 Super(8 GB), an RTX 4060 (8GB) or a Radeon RX 6700XT (12 GB). A solid-state drive with 140 GB of free space is required for everyone, and were yet to learn about the hardware necessary for 4K.Reducing Minimum PC requirementsFortunately, Capcom is aware that the requirements may be slightly too heavy, especially after the first open beta, and its working on lowering the minimum specifications. It may also look into releasing a benchmark tool for PC players, though its yet to be confirmed when.Console Graphics ModesPS5 and Xbox Series X players will have two modes in Wilds Prioritize Graphics, which renders at 30721728 and outputs at 2160p while running at 30 frames per second and Prioritize Framerate for 60 FPS with a rendered resolution of 1080p that outputs to 2160p. Meanwhile, Xbox Series S players can only play at 1080p/30 FPS. Capcom has also confirmed that instead of checkerboard rendering from the first beta, AMD FSR is used for upscaling in-game. Prioritize Framerate mode also offers improved performance after some bug fixes.PS5 Pro Support on Day OneThose on PlayStation 5 Pro can look forward to support via a day one patch. The graphical modes and visual improvements have yet to be detailed, so expect more information in the weeks leading up to launch.Layered ArmorFinally, layered armor returns for those whose endgame begins and ends with fashion. On top of turning any armor piece into layered armor, Capcom is also releasing exclusive layered armor sets as a pre-order bonus and part of the Deluxe Pack. Additional cosmetic DLC will go live in Spring and Summer as part of the Premium Deluxe Edition, though their contents have yet to be revealed.

  • EA and Respawn Entertainment Are Planning an Apex Legends 2.0
    gamingbolt.com
EA and Respawn Entertainment have insisted on several occasions that they arent planning any meaningful overhauls or a similar sequel for battle royale shooterApex Legends, but it seems plans may have changed. Speaking during EAs recent quarterly earnings call (via VGC), CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged the massive success of Apex Legends, but admitted that the games recent trajectory has been below the publishers expectations.Apex is probably one of the great new launches in our industry over the last decade and has been loved by that core cohort, he said. Weve had over 200 million people play the game. However, the trajectory of the business of that franchise has not been headed in the direction that we have wanted for some time.Wilson went on to explain that in the short- to medium-term, the plan is to keep supporting Apex Legendsand developing new content for the shooter. Apparently, this will also include a more meaningful update of Apex as a broad game experience, though this isnt going to become a priority until the nextBattlefieldwill release (which will happen sometime before April 2026, EA has said). We have been trying, tuning and testing many things in the context of the ongoing support of the community, he said. As we think about Apex today, I really think about the development happening across three core vectors. The first is how do we continue to support this incredible community that plays the game day in and day out, which numbers tens of millions of people. And thats both quality of life, anti-cheat, and all of the things that make the core experience great, as well as the creation of new content for that community. The second phase, and I think Ive talked about this before, is we do believe there will be a time where we need to do a more meaningful update of Apex as a broad game experience, and the team is diligently working on that. You should imagine we probably wouldnt drop that on top of a Battlefield launch. So from a timing standpoint, our thinking right now is that that would exist post-Battlefield.Beyond that, meanwhile, Wilson says EA and Respawn Entertainment are also planning a yet more comprehensive upgrade- something along the lines of anApex Legends 2.0.Sometime on a longer-term time horizon, there will be an even bigger, more meaningful update to that broader game experience, Wilson said. An Apex 2.0, if you will. This will not be the final incarnation of Apex. The team remains incredibly committed. We continue to invest behind the core community, which continues to play in the tens of millions of players. But we do believe that there should be a more major update. That will probably happen after the Battlefield launch, just in terms of timing. And the team is diligently working through what that would be.And then longer-term, our expectation is that well continue to expand what this franchise is and how we support a core community of highly competitive players and new communities that want to come and experience all the greatness that Apex has to offer.
