  • Back to the Future 4 Possibility Addressed Definitively by Screenwriter
    www.denofgeek.com
Given some of the decisions that Welcome to Marwen director Zemeckis has made lately thats a bit of a relief. Even though The Polar Express still makes gobs of money and Flight and Contact, and Cast Away have their fans, Zemeckis has never come close to matching his mega-hits Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and Forrest Gump. So a cynic might expect hes long been primed to take the easy money and let someone else have a crack at the story and universe he co-created.However, both Zemeckis and Gale seem devoted to protecting the classic they made 40 years ago. Zemeckis loves to experiment with effects and is perfectly content if people hate his version of Beowulf or Pinocchio. Meanwhile Gale has devoted himself lately to curating the legacy of Back to the Future. Neither seems interested in exploiting the concept for something as ridiculous as money.Which shouldnt be too much of a surprise to anyone who well remembers the trilogy. Back to the Future Part II has received a lot of attention lately thanks to the parallels between the 2015 of the film, in which bully Biff uses his sports betting winnings to make himself into a gauche mogul, and our current era of powerful, gauche dummies and sports betting saturation.Yet relatively few Americans nostalgic for that movie have seemed to notice that Back to the Future Part II is deeply critical of the rich, suggesting that anyone who goes after money for the sake of money sells more than their souls.Given that premise in the second film, why would anyone expect Gale and Zemeckis to make a fourth? Looked at that way, Gales brusk response doesnt seem so mean.

  • Jurassic Word Rebirth Trailer Features Huge Callbacks to Jurassic Park 3 and the Novel
    www.denofgeek.com
Welcome to Jurassic Park! Again!Just a few years after Jurassic World: Dominion flooded the planet with dinosaurs giant locusts, Paramount is sending us back to Isla Nublar, hopefully to recreate some of the magic of the original Steven Spielberg movie with Jurassic World: Rebirth. Its fitting then that the first trailer for Rebirth isnt just shots of new heroes played by Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali. The trailer is also filled with references to the original film, its sequels, and even the Michael Crichton novel that inspired it all.By this point, most fans know the liberties that Spielberg and his screenwriter David Koepp, who shares a credit with Crichton and writes the screenplay for Rebirth, took with the novel. The book imagined the lawyer Donald Gennaro not as a selfish coward who died on the toilet but as a good man who sacrificed himself to save kids Lex and Tim. Conversely, the novel presented John Hammond not as Santa Claus masquerading as an entrepreneur, but as cruel man who cares more about the bottom line than he does his own grandkids.Yet, fans of the book have long defended a standout sequence from the 1990 novel, one that didnt make it on screen. In the book, Grant takes Lex and Tim to the control center via raft, a perilous journey complete with an attack by the T-Rex. Spielberg included the scene in their original script, but ultimately decided to cut it from the finished film, leaving fans to wonder what might have been. Those fans eyes must have spread open like a dilophosaurus about to spit when they saw the Rebirth trailer. What do they see at the end of the trailer, but a scene of a boat surrounded by spinosauruses, trapping the humans for a mosasaurus attack. No, the scene isnt a 1:1 translation of the moment from the book, which took place on an attraction. But it has the same fundamentals that made the novel so scary, namely the threat of dinos from the deep.Speaking of the spinosaurus, its back! And has brought its cousins! The spinosaurus was the major addition to Jurassic Park III, a faster and more aggressive creature than the T-Rexes who ruled in Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park III director Joe Johnston took a page from the world of wrestling and had the spino take on the T-Rex early in the movie. After trouncing the former big bad, the spino established itself as the true king of the thunder lizards.Although initially met with a mixed response Jurassic Park III has only grown in estimation. With its expanding fan base comes an increased appreciation for the spinosaurus, even after Jurassic World put the T-Rex back on type by having it defeat the mutant Indominus Rex. For spinosaurus supporters, T-Rexs post-retirement win only built hype for their favorite dino.Clearly, Jurassic World: Rebirth director Gareth Edwards falls into that camp, because the trailer is filled with spinos, including the aforementioned pack surrounding the boat for a terrible thunder team-up.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! In between these major winks to previous entries, the Rebirth trailer also features more clever nods to the past. Weve got shots of favorite locations, including the ravages of the T-Rex pen that shocked poor Tim and the welcome center, complete with banner that reads When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. A mosasaurus jumps from the water at the end of the trailer, just as one did at the end of the first Jurassic World trailer. And, of course, we get a few strains of the perfect John Williams score from the first movie.Lest these winks seem tedious, rest assured that the trailer gets playful with its references. The best example may be the way it recreates a favorite moment from the first film. In Jurassic Park, the first T-Rex attack climaxes with Ian Malcolm waving a flare to get the beasts attention and draw him away from the jeep with the kids. In an amazing Spielberg profile shot, the camera pushes in on Alan Grants face as he barks, Ian! Dont move. The Jurassic World: Rebirth scene echos that moment, this time with Alis character waving the flare and Johansson calling his name. That playfulness bodes well for Rebirth, which includes a healthy dose of pulp adventure in between its callbacks. The trailer suggests that Rebirth might be the ideal type of sequel, one that acknowledges the past while pushing forward to new directions. But if nostalgia isnt all you want from a new Jurassic World movie, theres at least one new element everyone will be talking about the new dino fans are calling the D-Rex, a new threat that, according to director Gareth Edwards in a new interview with Vanity Fair, is inspired by the T-Rex, the Rancor from Return of the Jedi, and the Xenomorph from the Alien movies. Have a look at the new lad below:Looks cuddly, doesnt it? Jurassic Park: Rebirth roars into theaters on July 2, 2025.

  • Elon Musk Reportedly Has a Huge Conflict of Interest Motivating Him to Gut USAID
    futurism.com
Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency has laid waste to USAID, an international development agency that typically spends tens of billions of dollars on aid across the world. Its demise could result in the death of "thousands, if not hundreds of thousands" of people, as one anonymous USAID official told Politico. In an excoriating series of tweets, Musk called the agency a "criminal organization" and argued that it was "evil," while furthering harebrained conspiracy theories claiming it was somehow linked to the outbreak of COVID.Now, it's starting to sound like Musk's seething hatred towards the aid organization can be traced back to at least one conflict of interest at one of his business ventures: according to The Lever, USAID's inspector general was investigating Musk's Starlink partnership with the Ukrainian government around the time DOGE shut down the organization.Needless to say, it's a charge that perfectly illustrates why Musk is unsuited for the job he's been given. Besides the billionaire's racist and xenophobic ideologies, Musk's singling out of USAID was more than likely self-serving and has nothing to do with it allegedly being run by "radical left lunatics," as he's said.Put simply, Musk's own greed could soon kickstart a senseless and entirely preventable humanitarian disaster of epic proportions, with The Lever reporting that USAID's office of inspector general informed Congress in September that it was reviewing "USAIDs oversight of Starlink Satellite Terminals provided to the Ukrainian government, and USAIDs efforts to protect against sexual exploitation and abuse in Ukraine."USAID's website has also since been scrubbed of any mentions of Musk's ventures, including SpaceX and Starlink after Musk started gutting. In early 2022, SpaceX delivered tens of thousands of Starlink terminals to Ukrainians on the front lines, greatly enhancing their connectivity. It didn't take long for Musk to get cold feet, arguing that it was "unreasonable" for SpaceX to continue footing their bills.Musk has also reportedly met with Russian president Vladimir Putin several times during the country's invasion.According to Walter Isaacson's biography of the mercurial entrepreneur, Musk intentionally hamstrung the Starlink satellite network to thwart a Ukrainian attack on Russia's naval fleet near the Crimean coast."How am I in this war?" Musk asked Isaacson. "Starlink was not meant to be involved in wars. It was so people can watch Netflix and chill and get online for school and do good peaceful things, not drone strikes."In response, Musk admitted that he refused to "agree" to an "emergency request from government authorities to activate Starlink all the way to Sevastopol," which had the "obvious intent being to sink most of the Russian fleet at anchor."Russian forces have since made use of black market Starlink terminals to power their warfare in Ukraine.Several years later, Musk's coup in Washington, DC, is already claiming plenty of victims. USAID workers and their families have already been told to uproot their lives, leaving a massive vacuum in the global aid sector. The organization's dismantling is nothing less than a massive overreach of power, orchestrated by the richest man in the world."I dont even know if crime is the right word for the illegal destruction of USAID," New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie wrote in a post on Bluesky. "It is an autocratic power grab and a direct attack on the sovereignty of the American people."More on DOGE: Elon Musk Says DOGE Will Now Shut Down Government Payments He Doesn't LikeShare This Article

  • Failed Robotaxi Company Laying Off Workforce
    futurism.com
It's the end of the road for Cruise.Time of DeathGeneral Motors' robotaxi company Cruise has begun laying off half of its workforce, The Verge reports a nail in the coffin for the company, two months after General Motors pulled its funding.GM has announced that it's acquired "full ownership" over the once-promising startup, while doubling down on the advancementsof its assisted-driving feature Super Cruise.Once hailed as a pioneer in the autonomous ride-hailing service space, Cruise had a lot to lose. In October 2023, a pedestrian became trapped underneath a Cruise robotaxi, launching a lengthy investigation and eventually leading to California yanking its permit in the state.Despite lofty plans to bring its robotaxi service to more cities, Cruise never recovered, pulling its entire fleet from the streets in Novemberand never making a return.Cruise's spectacular fall from grace highlights nagging shortcomings of the tech, resulting in plenty of mayhem on public streets and terrifying run-ins with pedestrians, despite many years of testing and billions in investment."We are grateful for their passion and contributions to help us reach this stage, and our focus is on supporting them into their next chapter with severance packages and career support," Cruise spokesperson Sara Autio told The Verge. "While not an easy decision, we are focused on combining efforts with General Motors to accelerate autonomy at scale on personal autonomous vehicles."Highway to HellWhere Cruise's demise leaves the industry as a whole remains to be seen. Once its fiercest competitor, Alphabet's Waymo, is still planning a major expansion nationwide and is currently operating a 300-vehicle fleet in San Francisco.Elon Musk's Tesla is also planning a rollout of autonomous "Cybercabs," but when or if that'll happen remains extremely fuzzy. Now that Musk, currently distracted by a side quest to machete his way through the US government, has floated the idea of getting rid of essentially all regulations, it remains to be seen whether Tesla will have to battle the same regulatory hurdles that Cruise failed to clear.More on robotaxis: Furious Crowd Tears Waymo Robotaxi Limb From LimbShare This Article

  • Supersonic planes are inching toward takeoff. That could be a problem.
    www.technologyreview.com
Boom Supersonic broke the sound barrier in a test flight of its XB-1 jet last week, marking an early step in a potential return for supersonic commercial flight. The small aircraft reached a top speed of Mach 1.122 (roughly 750 miles per hour) in a flight over southern California and exceeded the speed of sound for a few minutes. XB-1s supersonic flight demonstrates that the technology for passenger supersonic flight has arrived, said Boom founder and CEO Blake Scholl in a statement after the test flight. Boom plans to start commercial operation with a scaled-up version of the XB-1, a 65-passenger jet called Overture, before the end of the decade, and it has already sold dozens of planes to customers including United Airlines and American Airlines. But as the company inches toward that goal, experts warn that such efforts will come with a hefty climate price tag. Supersonic planes will burn significantly more fuel than current aircraft, resulting in higher emissions of carbon dioxide, which fuels climate change. Supersonic jets also fly higher than current commercial planes do, introducing atmospheric effects that may warm the planet further. In response to questions from MIT Technology Review, Boom pointed to alternative fuels as a solution, but those remain in limited supplyand they could have limited use in cutting emissions in supersonic aircraft. Aviation is a significant and growing contributor to human-caused climate change, and supersonic technologies could grow the sectors pollution, rather than make progress toward shrinking it. XB-1 follows a long history of global supersonic flight. Humans first broke the sound barrier in 1947, when Chuck Yeager hit 700 miles per hour in a research aircraft (the speed of sound at that flight's altitude is 660 miles per hour). Just over two decades later, in 1969, the first supersonic commercial airliner, the Concorde, took its first flight. That aircraft regularly traveled at supersonic speeds until the last one was decommissioned in 2003. Among other issues (like the nuisance of sonic booms), one of the major downfalls of the Concorde was its high operating cost, due in part to the huge amounts of fuel it required to reach top speeds. Experts say todays supersonic jets will face similar challenges. Flying close to the speed of sound changes the aerodynamics required of an aircraft, says Raymond Speth, associate director of the MIT Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment. All the things you have to do to fly at supersonic speed, he says, they reduce your efficiency Theres a reason we have this sweet spot where airplanes fly today, around Mach 0.8 or so. Boom estimates that one of its full-sized Overture jets will burn two to three times as much fuel per passenger as a subsonic planes first-class cabin. The company chose this comparison because its aircraft is designed to deliver an enhanced, productive cabin experience, similar to whats available in first- and business-class cabins on todays aircraft. That baseline, however, isnt representative of the average traveler today. Compared to standard economy-class travel, first-class cabins tend to have larger seats with more space between them. Because there are fewer seats, more fuel is required per passenger, and therefore more emissions are produced for each person. When passengers crammed into coach are considered in addition to those in first class, each passenger on a Boom Supersonic flight will burn somewhere between five and seven times more fuel per passenger than the average subsonic plane passenger today, according to research from the International Council on Clean Transportation. Its not just carbon dioxide from burning fuel that could add to supersonic planes climate impact. All jet engines release other pollutants as well, including nitrogen oxides, black carbon, and sulfur. The difference is that while commercial planes today top out in the troposphere, supersonic aircraft tend to fly higher in the atmosphere, in the stratosphere. The air is less dense at higher altitudes, creating less drag on the plane and making it easier to reach supersonic speeds. Flying in the stratosphere, and releasing pollutants there, could increase the climate impacts of supersonic flight, Speth says. For one, nitrogen oxides released in the stratosphere damage the ozone layer through chemical reactions at that altitude. Its not all bad news, to be fair. The drier air in the stratosphere means supersonic jets likely wont produce significant contrails. That could be a benefit for climate, since contrails contribute to aviations warming. Boom has also touted plans to make up for its expected climate impacts by making its aircraft compatible with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a category of alternative fuels made from biological sources, waste products, or even captured carbon from the air. Going faster requires more energy, but it doesnt need to emit more carbon. Overture is designed to fly on net-zero carbon sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), eliminating up to 100% of carbon emissions, a Boom spokesperson said via email in response to written questions from MIT Technology Review. However, alternative fuels may not be a saving grace for supersonic flight. Most commercially available SAF today is made with a process that cuts emissions between 50% and 70% compared to fossil fuels. So a supersonic jet running on SAFs may emit less carbon dioxide than one running on fossil fuels, but alternative fuels will likely still come with some level of carbon pollution attached, says Dan Rutherford, senior director of research at the International Council on Clean Transportation. People are pinning a lot of hope on SAFs, says Rutherford. But the reality is, today they remain scarce [and] expensive, and they have sustainability concerns of their own. Of the 100 billion gallons of jet fuel used last year, only about 0.5% of it was SAF. Companies are building new factories to produce larger volumes of the fuels and expand the available options, but the fuel is likely going to continue to make up a small fraction of the existing fuel supply, Rutherford says. That means supersonic jets will be competing with other, existing planes for the same supply, and aiming to use more of it. Boom Supersonic has secured 10 million gallons of SAF annually from Dimensional Energy and Air Company for the duration of the Overture test flight program, according to the company spokespersons email. Ultimately, though, if and when Overture reaches commercial operation, it will be the airlines that purchase its planes hunting for a fuel supplyand paying for it. Theres also a chance that using SAFs in supersonic jets could come with unintended consequences, as the fuels have a slightly different chemical makeup than fossil fuels. For example, fossil fuels generally contain sulfur, which has a cooling effect, as sulfur aerosols formed from jet engine exhaust help reflect sunlight. (Intentional release of sulfur is one strategy being touted by groups aiming to start geoengineering the atmosphere.) That effect is stronger in the stratosphere, where supersonic jets are likely to fly. SAFs, however, typically have very low sulfur levels, so using the alternative fuels in supersonic jets could potentially result in even more warming overall. There are other barriers that Boom and others will need to surmount to get a new supersonic jet industry off the ground. Supersonic travel over land is largely banned, because of the noise and potential damage that comes from the shock wave caused by breaking the sound barrier. While some projects, including one at NASA, are working on changes to aircraft that would result in a less disruptive shock wave, these so-called low-boom technologies are far from proven. NASAs prototype was revealed last year, and the agency is currently conducting tests of the aircraft, with first flight anticipated sometime this year. Boom is planning a second supersonic test flight for XB-1, as early as February 10, according to the spokesperson. Once testing in that small aircraft is done, the data will be used to help build Overture, the full-scale plane. The company says it plans to begin production on Overture in its factory in roughly 18 months. In the meantime, the world continues to heat up. As MITs Speth says, I feel like its not the time for aviation to be coming up with new ways of using even more energy, with where we are in the climate crisis.
