down Teslas turn toxic as sales crash in Europe and the UK EV sales in the region are growing, but not for Tesla. Jonathan M. Sales are crashing in France, Germany, and the UKall affluent countries that are key markets for Tesla's electric vehicles. Coming on the heels of a large financial miss, it's just one more problem for the automaker.Tesla sales dropped around 13 percent across Europe in 2024, but so far this year, the scale of the problem is far greater. In France, sales of new Teslas fell by 63 percent, while total car sales in the country fell by just 6 percent, with EV sales dropping just half a percent.Germany was already looking like lost ground for Teslaits 41 percent drop in 2024 accounted for most of Tesla's lost sales across Europe. That must make the 59 percent drop in German Tesla sales recorded during January even more painful on the profit and loss statements.Across the Channel, the British auto industry just released its sales data for January. Here, Tesla sales fell less precipitouslyjust 12 percent. However, battery EV sales were 35 percent higher in the UK in January 2025 than in January 2024. The cake is growing, but Tesla is getting to eat less and less of it.In fact, no Tesla cracked the UK's top 10 best-seller list last month, something that has regularly happened in the past, although that may be due to having just two models for sale in most markets.Large declines have also been recorded in Sweden (44 percent), Norway (38 percent), and the Netherlands (42 percent).Tesla's limited and outdated model range is undoubtedly a contributing factor to its poor sales in Europe, and the company must be hoping that the recently facelifted Model Y crossover can stimulate more traffic at its showrooms. Its investment in the Cybertruck is of no help in the region, as the steel-clad pickup truck is too large and heavy for use with a normal driver's license and does not conform to road legality regulations. But the behavior of Tesla CEO Elon Musk could also be to blame for much of Europe's distaste for his cars. Lately, Musk has repeatedly inserted himself into European politics to create friction and promote his far-right causes. Over there, at least, it seems car buyers may be sick of him.Jonathan M. Four WallsThe Sims isn't just a place you can build houses you'll definitely never be able to afford; it's a mid-life crisis Twilight Zone for freaking out about interior designI dont know if the carpet matches the drapes!?! I DONT KNOW IF THE CARPET MATCHES THE DRAPES!?!Image credit: VG247 Article by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 5, 2025 Help.Theres a gym room. Do I need a gym room? Do I want a gym room? I dont know, but its there now.Thats far from the most pressing issue - the wallpaper. Ive gone for one that looks like distant mountains in an abstract sense. It works thematically, the idea being this as a room where youre pushing to the limit, youre climbing the mountain to having a tummy that looks a bit like its made of six cans of beer, but in a good way.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. However, thats just one of the ways it has to work. Does it work colour-wise with the pale planks Ive chosen as flooring? Do they work practically as a thing thatll be underfoot in a room which includes a treadmill people might fall off of? Should I have gone with something softer, like a carpet, to try and minimise any damage inflicted? But, then again, theres also a punching bag in this room. You cant be shuffling around on carpet in your running trainers, can you?I think I can at least take solace in the colour Ive picked for all of this equipment - red - not seeming out of what with the rest of this house that Id never be able to afford in real life, but thats been spewed forth from my psyche into The Sims 4 with help from a motherloded fortune.Hang on a minute, though. I might have problems elsewhere. The living rooms green, because I liked some plant-themed wallpaper. Ive broken from the red, light gray/white, and black scheme Ive rigidly stuck with for pretty much the entirety of this ludicrously large for a single sim abode. Have I accidentally made a Christmas themed red and green grotto? Am I an elf? What I do know is that Ive put ponds at both the front and back, because I chickened out of the much more fun option of putting a cool pirate ship out there. Look, its technically a childrens climbing frame, so surely it cant be chilling in the garden of a large property inhabited by just one bloke? What if kids are passing by and just start playing on it? What if my young adult sim cant resist the urge, starts playing on it, falls off because theyre not as limber as they used to be, and hurts their elbow? How will they explain it to the doctors at the sim hospital? Whats Simlish for I swear, I was doing some, er, DIY and fell off some riggi-*cough* a ladder? I've certainly taken some swings at putting together rooms that don't look entirely terrible. | Image credit: EA/MaxisI decided I was fine with having some model trains and cars in the living room. Theyre all neatly sat on display tables, though, NOT on the floor having been touched. The manchild test is not going to be failed today, I swear. Thats why Ive got stuff like potted plants youve got to look after or theyll die, bookshelves filled with pretentious shite, and a whole indoor bar thats definitely not just there because I couldnt figure out what else I could do with the space thatd be socially acceptable. Im mature. Ive bought a shoe rack to go by the front door.At the same time, Ive worked hard not to dip too hard into the other end of the scale. Theres a grandfather clock in the living room, for aesthetic purposes. My sim will not use it to tell the time. There are no old geezers in this house, let me tell you. Seriously. Sure, there might be some kinda rustic choices in terms of decor, and theres been some time spent on gardening, but this is not a retirement home. Theres a balcony, but therell be no staring out from it, in a kind of wistful, Im a wizened soul whos acquired a deep appreciation for life because I might not have it for much longer kinda way. My sim will not be using their one sun lounger to stare longingly into any sunsets, pondering what could have been.Ive got entire rooms and spaces dedicated to playing the guitar and writing on the computer, like great shrines to the person I think I am or believe I should be. But is this who I really am?I know, I know. Im overthinking it. Its just the decor of a video game house that Ill get bored of actually overseeing life in about ten minutes after I finish putting the finishing touches on it. Its not a real house, that Ive spent actual money on building and filling with things designed to say a litany of things about me, most notably that I am a person who owns things. A virtual house, full of virtual things that this virtual bloke virtually sitting on a virtual chair virtually owns. | Image credit: EA/Maxis/VG247I sit on the sofa and stare through the back of my own head at the hatch to the basement Ive built because it felt right, even if my sim will never create the horde of old clutter that still means too much to be thrown out such spaces inevitably host. Theres a DIY table down there too, even though Ive made it one of my sole residents disliked activities. Its pretty unhinged, this building a house in The Sims business. You start off feeling like youre just doing a nice little hobby. Like youre sitting down at a table to build one of those models my non-manchild has sitting on the opposite side of the room to his telly. Then, next thing you know, youre interrogating yourself about what your choices might say about your own psyche. Is my desire to own a house thats far too big and has entire rooms dedicated to things I dont even really like doing rooted in something that isnt genuine? Does growing up white and on the strange borderline between working and middle class inflict these kinds of yearnings on you? Is it societys fault that Id seemingly quite like a kitchen with an island, and a fridge that pours little cups of water you could easily get from the tap? Is it human nature to want to live in a hipster castle with bills that make you turn inside out when you open them? | Image credit: EA/Maxis/VG247Am I, having just turned 26, already succumbing to the call of the burbs signified by owning a bath and a shower that are two separate things, rather than one thing together, despite constantly professing to be immune to it? Are all of my professed beliefs about wanting a fair and equal society free from the scourge of the upper classes and billionaires hoarding too much of that which could mean life or death for the less fortunate something that could evaporate the second I come into a bit of actual wealth? Do I like the things I like, and want the things I want, or am I just someone whos decided that it must be the right thing to dream these dreams, to accept the will of the unseen, meddling god that is peer pressure?Am I my own person, or just a sim, playing out a life as fake as the one that actors portray on a screen? All I know is, Id probably feel better if the view The Sims 4 offered me of my creations didnt rip off the roof of each floor, allowing a judgementally serene sky to loom overhead.Theres no great god of the game up there, theyre all down here. Hopelessly trying to decide if their crappy mountain wallpaper looks too tacky. They need help.

  • Was AI used in those Fantastic Four: First Steps posters? Marvel says no, but that just leaves me wondering why they look so bad then
    www.vg247.com
Fix It In PostWas AI used in those Fantastic Four: First Steps posters? Marvel says no, but that just leaves me wondering why they look so bad thenGet it together, Marvel!Image credit: Marvel News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 5, 2025 A couple of posters that arrived with the first trailer for Fantastic Four: First Steps have been accused of using AI, but Marvel is denying that that's the case.Annoyingly, it's getting harder and harder to tell what is and isn't AI as the technology gets better and better. So, rather than the olden days where if something looked funky and people would just dunk on it because they knew it was a bad Photoshop job, these days the first question that comes to mind whenever an odd looking image comes up is "is this AI?" That happened this week when a pair of posters for The Fantastic Four: First Steps came out alongside its first trailer, and if you look at them below, you can kind of understand why someone might think so. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. For one, there's a woman's face that appears twice in the crowd, and the person waving the largest Fantastic Four flag appears to only have four fingers - hands not having the right amount of fingers is a common sign that something was generated with AI. Lighting also often looks peculiar in AI generated images, and both posters have an odd look to them. But, according to a spokesperson from Marvel that spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, neither poster used AI to make them. So, assuming that's true, there's another question: why do they look so crap?To see this content please enable targeting cookies. It feels like a wider problem of Marvel doing things on the cheap, when we all know it has the money to do better than that. Weirdly, it also feels out of step with the first trailer, which actually looks like it uses real sets for the first time in a long while, rather than just everything being green screened. I do believe that they're both just bad Photoshop jobs, the repeated face looking exactly the same isn't something AI is likely to do, but all it makes me feel is that I'm not sure why I'd want to go see a new Marvel film if even the smallest of jobs are cheaped out on like this.Presumably the actual film will come out fine, but we won't know until it comes out later this year on July 25.

  • The Elon Musk Act aims to ban special government employees from having federal contracts
    techcrunch.com
U.S. Democratic Representative Mark Pocan plans to introduce a bill designed to ban special government employees like Elon Musk from having federal contracts so they cant steer spending towards their own self-interest.The proposed bill is called the ELON MUSK Act, which stands for Eliminate Looting of Our Nation by Mitigating Unethical State Kleptocracy. No government employee, special or not, should have any financial interest in who the government does business with, Pocan, the House Democrat from Wisconsin, said in a statement. Elon Musk is the poster child for this type of abuse. After more than $20 billion in federal contracts, theres no way Musk can be objective in what hes doing. Protecting the taxpayers has to be our number one priority.Musks SpaceX holds federal contracts with NASA and the Department of Defense. The federal government has in place ethics rules for how special government employees should behave. Musk appears poised to ignore some of those. For example, the governing statute on financial conflicts of interests prohibits special employees from participating in matters that affect [their] financial interests. When President Donald Trump entered the Oval Office, he put Musk in charge of a controversial new advisory group called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which has far-reaching power across federal agencies, many of which regulate industries in which Musk has a stake. The ethics rules also advise that such employees should not generally engage in outside activities, including employment, that conflict with official duties. In addition to being the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, Musk also owns X (formerly Twitter), Neuralink, and The Boring Company.Musks infiltration of federal agencies has already sparked public protests and political opposition as he has demanded unfettered access to federal government agency computer systems, including the Treasury Departments payments system which handles Social Security and Medicare.House and Senate Democrats also introduced a bill Tuesday to block unlawful access to the Treasury payments system, and two federal employee unions have filed suit to block DOGE access to the system.Topics

  • New target of Paragon spyware comes forward
    techcrunch.com
On Wednesday, Mediterranea Saving Humans, an Italian nonprofit with the mission of rescuing immigrants who try to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Africa to Europe, said one of its founders was among the targets of a recent spyware campaign carried out against WhatsApp users. In a press release, Mediterranea said WhatsApp notified its founder Luca Casarini last week that he had been targeted with spyware made by Paragon Solutions, an Israeli surveillance tech startup. On Friday, WhatsApp said it had disrupted an espionage campaign using Paragon spyware that targeted around 90 people. At the time, the Meta-owned company said that among the targets there were journalists and members of civil society, without naming anyone. Since then some of the targets, including Casarini, have started to come forward. The first person was Francesco Cancellato, the director of Fanpage.it, an Italian news website that has published investigations into organized crime and corruption. Last year the publication reported a multi-part documentary that showed some members of the youth wing of the party currently running the Italian government singing about fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, chanting Nazi slogans, and making racist remarks. After Cancellato,Sweden-based activist Husam El Gomati also came forward. El Gomati has been critical of how Libya and Italy have collaborated to stop immigrants from crossing the Mediterranean. And now, Casarini is the latest person to have been notified by WhatsApp.All three targets have one thing in common, their work, or that of their organizations, has been critical of the current Italian government, led by far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The activities of rescue at sea and assistance to people imprisoned in Libyan camps or deported to the desert are the focus of attention of the Italian secret services, in particular the AISE, which operates in Libya and Tunisia, Mediterranea said in its press release. Some questions arise: did the Italian government authorize such an operation? Do the Italian secret services use Paragon software?Contact UsDo you have more information about Paragon, and this spyware campaign? From a non-work device, you can contact Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai securely on Signal at +1 917 257 1382, or via Telegram and Keybase @lorenzofb, or email. You also can contact TechCrunch via SecureDrop. So far, the Italian government has not answered that question, nor has the government commented on Cancellato nor Casarinis cases. The Italian government, through its official press email address, as well as that of Fabrizio Alfano, the head of Melonis press office, have not responded to TechCrunchs requests for comment and questions, which included whether Italy has purchased Paragons spyware.Ynetnews, an Israeli news site, reported on Monday that Italy is a Paragon customer.John Fleming, the executive chairman of Paragons U.S. subsidiary, did not respond to a request for comment on Casarinis case, nor respond to a request for comment on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Fleming told TechCrunch that Paragon, which was acquired by U.S. private equity fund AE Industrial in December, sells its products to a select group of global democracies principally, the United States and its allies.[Paragon] requires that all users agree to terms and conditions that explicitly prohibit the illicit targeting of journalists and other civil society figures. We have a zero-tolerance policy against such targeting and will terminate our relationship with any customer that violates our terms of service, Fleming said in the statement.Fleming has not yet answered questions about Paragon, including whether the Italian government is a customer, and whether Paragon is investigating WhatsApps allegations and those of the targets that have come forward so far.Mediterranea said that the Citizen Lab, a digital rights organization at the University of Toronto that has investigated spyware for more than a decade, are conducting an investigation on Casarinis phone.John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, confirmed to TechCrunch that they are actively investigating Paragon.Scott-Railton warned that these cases are another reminder that the mercenary spyware industry, with companies such as NSO Group and Paragon, has been fueling abuses for years, even in democratic countries. If you sell surveillance tools its just a question of when the technology will be abused, not whether it will be, said Scott-Railton.If youre selling secret surveillance to democracies, you still have to be incredibly skeptical of your customers and assume the possibility that abuse is lurking around every corner. If you dont, youre choosing willful ignorance. To me, this points to something fundamental about the mercenary spyware model, which is: if you sell surveillance tools its just a question of when the technology will be abused, not whether it will be, said Scott-Railton.

Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, the Aga Khan IV, died on February 4 in Lisbon, Portugal at age 88. News of his passing was confirmed Aga Khan Development Networks X channel. As founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), the Aga Khan IV was one of architectures greatest patrons. The network has commissioned projects all over the world by renowned architects, including the United States first Ismaili Center by Farshid Moussavi Architecture, which is near completion in Houston. The Aga Khan IV founded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1977. That award has since recognized and documented more than 9,000 projects around the globe. The late Prince Karim Al-Hussaini was born in 1936 in Geneva, Switzerland. He later studied Islamic history at Harvard. He became the 49th Imam of Nizari Ismaili Muslims in 1957 after his grandfather decided to skip a generation, and bestow thetitle upon his then 20-year-old grandson. Two decades later, the Aga Khan IV started the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which runs in three-year cycles. It started out recognizing projects of cultural and historic significant for the Ismaili community, which touches South Asia, East Africa, and the Middle East; but today it awards projects from all over. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture, an AKDN subsidiary, has overseen the preservation of historic buildings and cities in Morocco, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Tajikistan, India, Pakistan, and many more countries with a strong Ismaili presence. The Aga Khan Programs for Islamic Architecture (AKPIA) at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were launched in 1979. The courses, lectures, and conferences in the program concentrate on ideas and concepts related to Islamic architectureand urbanism. The purpose that drove The Aga Khan IV was his mission to define Islamic architecture, although His Highness admitted in 1980 that there is no single or unifying definition of the practice.Among the Aga Khan Award for Architectures early winners were Egyptian architect and planner Hassan Fathy in 1980, Charles Correa in 1998, Zaha Hadid and Marina Tabassum in 2016, and many others. In 2001, speaking from Aleppo, Syria, at the Award presentation ceremony of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the Aga Khan IV said the goal of the award program was to create an intellectual spacesomething we might think of as a beautiful bustan in which there would be no possibility of suffocation from the dying weeds of dogma, whether professional or ideological; where the flowers of articulation and challenging ideas could grow without restraint; where the new plants of creativity and risk-taking could blossom in the full light of day [] The Aga Khan IV continued: where beauty would be seen in the articulation of difference and for seeking diverse solutions in the form of plants of different sizes, shapes, textures and colors, presented in new configurations and arrangements; a bustan whose glory would stem from the value and legitimacy of the pluralism of the infinite manifestations of culture in the human community. The Aga Khan Museum opened to the public in 2014. That building was designed by Fumihiko Maki, who also passed recently, and is sited in Toronto. In 2020, The Aga Khan Award for Architecture recognized those who contributed to the revitalization of Muharraq, Bahrain. The Aga Khan IV spent the last years of his life in Portugal. He is survived by his sons, daughter, and grandchildren. With his passing, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V was named the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.
