  • Hiveclass, a platform for virtual PE classes for kids, raises $1.5M
    techcrunch.com
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020 and schools transitioned to online learning, both Joe Titus and Paul Suhr were concerned about how to maintain their childrens activity levels in the absence of mandatory physical education classes and sports. The two friends solution was Hiveclass, a New York-based edtech platform that hosts online courses for K-12 students to learn about fitness, sports, dance, yoga, nutrition, and mindfulness, among other things. There is also a self-defense course.Even in a post-pandemic world, the platform is attracting interest owing to a confluence of trends. Kids are becoming increasingly disengaged from P.E. classes in schools, often choosing to skip them entirely. Many students dread P.E. for its highly competitive environment, where bullying occurs often.Additionally, parents across the U.S. are struggling to pay youth sports expenses. Titus and Suhr, who bonded over second-grade baseball, want their kids to experience the same enjoyment in sports that they once did, but many of these same experiences are becoming unattainable. As a parent in New York City, said Titus, the inequities of the cost of sports was beyond me. I was my sons first soccer coach, and the cost of it was just so high. I [wondered], How does a family that lives in low-income housing afford soccer?Image Credits:HiveclassInvestors also recognize the value of online P.E. courses. Hiveclass where Titus is CEO and Suhr is chief product officer just raised $1.5 million seed funding. The funding will be allocated to product development. It will also be used to enhance a teacher portal thats used by educators who use Hiveclass to increase engagement in their classrooms. Also on the roadmap: new services for students with special needs.Indeed, instead of offering subscriptions directly to parents, Hiveclass markets its services to public schools and libraries. The platform offers a collection of short-form videos that teach children various skills, such as how to dribble a basketball. In addition to the videos, there are quizzes in between clips that require written responses, helping to keep kids focused and engaged.Accessing that teacher portal on the platform, educators can view all their students and their quiz answers to ensure that everyone is completing their work. (Hiveclass says another selling point is that students can earn P.E credits outside of class.)Hiveclass believes it stands out from other edtech platforms and even educational YouTube channels by emphasizing the P.E. and wellness field. The company claims to align with national standards set forth by SHAPE America, the Society of Health and Physical Educators organization that governs physical education in the U.S.PLT4M, is also a SHAPE America member. The company currently partners with more than 80 educational institutions and has over 13,000 students and teachers on the platform.Hiveclass doesnt publicly disclose pricing; it says that its tailored for each client based on their specific requirements, including student count. But it says it has generated more than $2 million in revenue and hopes to hit an additional $1 million by next month. The outfit is also exploring additional revenue streams, says Titus, including licensing agreements. The recent round was led by Spring Mountain Capital. Other investors in the round included Georgetown Angel Investor Network (GAIN), New York State Venture Fund, Rethink Education, and Techstars. The funding brings the startups total capital raised to over $3 million altogether.

  • Coalition of US states to file lawsuit after Musks DOGE gains access to Americans personal data
    techcrunch.com
A coalition of over a dozen U.S. states say they are planning to file a lawsuit in an effort to block billionaire Elon Musks team of cost-cutters from accessing sensitive federal government payment systems containing personal data on Americans. In a brief statement shared by 13 Democratic attorneys general, including California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland and New York, the coalition said it was planning to file the lawsuit in defense of our Constitution, our right to privacy, and the essential funding that individuals and communities nationwide are counting on.The coalition of states did not say when they planned to file the lawsuit, in which court, or what specific relief the attorneys general were seeking.TechCrunch contacted several U.S. state governments for comment but did not hear back. The planned lawsuit comes days after Musks team of mostly young, private sector associates from his various businesses gained access to top U.S. government departments and datasets, including systems containing the personal information of millions of Americans who receive Social Security checks, tax returns, and other payments from the federal government. Many of these systems were historically limited to a few departmental career staffers, given the sensitivity of the data.Musk and his team, known as the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, are now in control of the U.S. Treasury, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, and several other key federal agencies. Senior Democrats have called Musks access a risk to national security, citing the conflicts over his extensive business dealings in China.Musk, the worlds richest man, has a net worth of more than $400 billion. While the U.S. does not provide nationwide data protections for Americans, U.S. states have long established laws that require the protection of their state residents data including at the federal government level. • A Climate-Responsive Library for Rural Communities by PK_iNCEPTiON
    archeyes.com
Rural Library Aerial View | Pranit BorastudioIn the evolving discourse of rural development, architecture often finds itself at the intersection of necessity and innovation. While urban libraries traditionally serve as repositories of knowledge, they can become instruments of social transformation in rural contexts. The Rural Library in Kochargaon, designed by PK_iNCEPTiON, exemplifies this paradigm shiftredefining the library as a community-engaged learning space rather than merely a repository for books.Rural Library Technical InformationArchitects1-2: PK_iNCEPTiONLocation: Kochargaon, Nashik, Maharashtra, IndiaArea: 108 m2 | 1,162.5Sq. Ft.Completion Year: 2024Photographs: Pranit BorastudioOur goal was to create a space that not only provides a place for study but fosters a culture of learning for the entire communityan open, inclusive environment where education becomes a shared experience. Initiated by Round Table NGO, the project emerged from a study identifying a lack of adequate learning spaces, adversely affecting literacy rates. The architectural intervention builds upon the remnants of a collapsed Aanganwadi, repurposing its stable plinth to introduce a spatially porous, climate-responsive, and participatory learning environment. The Rural Library is not merely a standalone architectural object but an extension of its context. Situated one meter below road level and adjacent to the villages temple complex, the project skillfully negotiates topographical constraints while reinforcing community engagement.Rather than imposing a new architectural language, the project preserves and adapts an existing foundation, fostering spatial continuity within the village. Utilizing the former Aanganwadis stable plinth, the intervention retains a sense of familiarity, subtly reinforcing the sites historical narrative. The librarys spatial organization revolves around a central courtyard, serving as a lightwell and a flexible gathering space. Surrounding this core, the design integrates four key components:Two study rooms, positioned perpendicular to the street, ensure a buffer from external noise while maintaining inward-facing transparency.A book-stacking space strategically oriented towards the temple and street, turning books into publicly visible artifacts.A front pavilionserves as a semi-covered threshold, softening the transition from public to semi-private domains.A stepped entry sequence, converting a simple level change into an informal gathering space, enhancing spatial dynamism. The projects relationship with the adjacent temple complex is crucial. Rather than isolating itself as a detached facility, the library aligns with the visual and spatial axis of the temples public pavilion, encouraging unintentional encounters with knowledge. The visual permeability of the book-stacking space, framed by sliding shutters, beckons passersby, reinforcing the idea that knowledge should be accessible, inviting, and participatory.Materiality, Passive Strategies, and Construction LogicBeyond its spatial ingenuity, the Rural Library embodies a material-conscious approach, integrating cost-effective, low-maintenance, and climate-responsive strategies.Rather than resorting to high-tech solutions, the library employs load-bearing masonry accentuated by expansive arched openings. This decision draws from regional construction traditions, minimizing structural complexity while enhancing cross-ventilation and daylighting. The east-west oriented pitched roofs, constructed with corrugated metal sheets, play a crucial role in passive cooling. The high-pitched form facilitates hot air escape, while the material choice ensures lightweight construction and cost efficiency. The interplay of solid and void, along with the deep overhangs, regulates thermal comfort without reliance on mechanical systems.A defining feature of the project is the sliding shutters within the book-stacking space. When closed, these shutters serve as blackboards, instantly transforming the central courtyard into an outdoor classroom. This kinetic adaptability expands the librarys function beyond reading, accommodating workshops, community meetings, and night-school sessions for women. The choice of locally available stone for flooring enhances thermal mass, ensuring a cool surface underfoot while maintaining a visually cohesive material palette. This strategy reflects a resource-sensitive approach, integrating sustainability through material selection.Rural Library PlansFloor Plan | PK_iNCEPTiONFloor Plan | PK_iNCEPTiONSection | PK_iNCEPTiONSection | PK_iNCEPTiONRural Library Image GalleryAbout PK_iNCEPTiONPK_iNCEPTiON is an architectural practice based in Nashik, Maharashtra, India, led by Ar. • Elias Gates House // 1843
    buildingsofnewengland.com
In 1843, Elias Gates (1801-1886) a young farmer, purchased land from the family of his wife, Mary A. Stedman, and had this handsome brick, Greek Revival style house built. The family would reside here less than ten years, and relocate to Albany, where Elias worked as a bookseller. The house was purchased numerous times throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and operated as a farmhouse until much of the land was sold and subdivided for new housing. The Gates House is a great example of the Greek Revival style with a side hall plan, recessed entry with original sidelights and transom, and bold facade with brick pilasters dividing the bays with brick entablature and gable end facing the street.

  • First Congregational Church of Chicopee // 1825
    buildingsofnewengland.com
The First Congregational Church Society of Chicopee was organized as the Second Church of Springfield in 1751, when residents of land today known as Chicopee and Holyoke (then a part of Springfield) sought a parish church closer to their homes. Before Chicopee officially split from Springfield in 1844, the Second Church of Springfield built this Federal-Greek Revival style church building in 1825. Shepherd and Whitmarsh, prominent builders of Springfield were hired to erect the church. Both were trained under architect, Isaac Damon, thus the close resemblance to his designs for this church in Chicopee. The clapboard structure is simply designed but holds strong proportions and symmetry. The church has a four-columned portico with Ionic columns and a two-story square tower containing the belfry, blind octagonal stage with molded trim above, all capped by a dome surmounted by a weathervane. While the church now has replacement windows and plastic, ill-fitting shutters, the building is in great shape and tells the story of the early days of the development of Chicopee from sleepy parish town to industrial city.

  • Apple Insider Reports iPhone SE Release Is Days Away
    www.forbes.com
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, visits an Apple store in New York City. (Photo by Andrew Burton/Getty ... [+] Images/2015)Getty ImagesApples eagerly awaited return to the ultra-competitive mid-range smartphone market with a new iPhone SE could happen in the next week.Writing for Bloomberg, noted Apple reporter Mark Gurman offering a schedule for the release of the iPhone SE; and its faster than many anticipated: "The company expects to announce the device as early as next week, ahead of it going on sale later in the month, according to people with knowledge of the matter."When Was The iPhone SE Expected To Launch? The launch of the fourth iPhone SE has been pencilled in for Q1 2025 by the community for nearly a year, although recent reporting has pointed to a late March release, possibly slipping into early April. This would happen close to the release of iOS 18.4 and the final steps in the first generation suite of AI tools awkwardly backronymed to Apple Intelligence. Those plans look set to change, at least in part. Although Gurman reports a launch in the coming days, the actual release of the iPhone SE is a more nebulous later in the month, pushing deeper into Q1.Why Should The iPhone SE Launch Early? There are some advantages for Tim Cook and his team if the decision is made to reveal the iPhone SE at this point in time.First, launching a new iPhone will boost overall sales. While the iPhone 15 was the top-selling smartphone in global sales for 2024, Apples global share of the smartphone market fell in the last quarter of 2024, according to data from Counterpoint Research. This quarter includes the vast majority of sales of the current iPhone 16 family. Then, there is the competitive nature of the mid-range market. Before Apple can sell the iPhone SE it has to stop consumers from buying a smartphone from another manufacturer. This years Mobile World Congress will take place on Monday, March 3, and a raft of new smartphones will be announced, many of which will directly compete with the iPhone SE.While the die-hards in the Apple community will wait for the SE, the average consumer may not be as connected to the release dates. Launching and releasing before MWC will give the iPhone SE a clearer run to the market. Finally, Apple can take better control of the story by launching early. In the MWC run-up, many smartphones set to launch in Barcelona will have their specs, details and unique features leaked. Manufacturers will hope this ties in with their marketing decisions, but that may not be the case. The same is trueperhaps more so for any new iPhone release. What Challenges Will The iPhone SE Face?It has been three years since Apple launched a mid-range smartphone, and the market has changed. Cameras have multiple lenses and improved optics, chipsets are faster with more performance, storage and memory have grown closer to flagship levels, and generative AI has become a huge selling point in the last year.Apples AI efforts are competent at best, the main camera is expected to offer just a single lens and the iPhone price premium could work against the hardware in such a competitive space. Apple's decision to get ahead of the story and set its own terms may be the most significant benefit of an early announcement. With all that said, the iPhone SE could become one of the pivotal iPhones to come out of Cupertino in years. Now read more about the potential specifications of the iPhone SE...
