We dont want to say anything too obvious here, but the further we get into the MCU, the more stuff happens. And the closer we get to the end of a phase, some Marvel projects find themselves in the uncomfortable position of having to tie up a ton of loose threads in service of a broader plot. With The Fantastic Four: First Steps just around the corner, and technically ringing in a whole new phase, Captain America: Brave New World seems to be in that exact situation.The events that have led us here go all the way back to 2008 and are now scattered across Disney+ series and movies alike, and not necessarily in a good way. So here follows a messy account of all the loose ends that wound up on Sam Wilsons to-do list.How Sam Wilson/Falcon Became Captain America in the ComicsThere have been moments throughout Marvel's nearly 20 years of storytelling dominance that have more business to take care of, so to speak. Going all the way back to Iron Man 2, some MCU titles dont have the luxury of just telling their own story, and in recent years you can argue that none of them have. But the need to tie up loose ends in any given project is more present than ever in Marvel films now, and it gets more complicated the more characters bob and weave through the canon. Sam Wilsons first solo outing as the official Captain America seems to be one of those projects that drew the short straw, with more than a little thread-pulling to do.Sams road to wielding the shield is the straightest path to the events of Brave New World. First appearing in 2014s Captain America: The Winter Soldier while running slower than Steve Rogers would like, Sam started his MCU tenure as a VA counselor, helping veterans readjust to life back at home. After proving himself by helping to root HYDRA out of SHIELD, he quickly became Steves most trusted right hand err left I guess is the side hes always on. By the time Avengers: Age of Ultrons final moments rolled around, Falcon was a full-fledged Avenger. Captain America: Civil War finds him so entrenched hes heading off to prison with the rest of Team Cap. And this is where the path to Brave New World gets well and truly muddy. Going all the way back to Iron Man 2, some MCU titles dont have the luxury of just telling their own story, and in recent years you can argue that none of them have. Before he becomes Captain America, Sam meets Thaddeus Ross in Civil War at the Avengers Compound and likely again while being incarcerated at The Raft, gets reluctantly chummy with Bucky and very briefly crosses paths with Sharon Carter before going on the run with Team Cap all the way through the events of Infinity War. There he joins the battle against Thanos in Wakanda only to be dusted and just kinda not exist for five years before coming back to battle Thanos again, but this time on the winning team. Cut to old man Rogers back from his time-travel adventures keeping Hulks promise to the Ancient One, and gifting Sam a shiny new shield that came from somewhere in the past, or maybe an alternate timeline, because the original one was for sure chopped in half. Will we finally find out where that shield came from in Brave New World?And thats not even including The Falcon and The Winter Solider, where he finally took on the mantle of Captain America after a lot of hemming and hawing. So where Brave New World open questions are concerned, lets start there.Wheres Bucky?We loved Bucky and Sams frenemy energy in Civil War, and it was nice to see the two former partners of Captain America bond in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. So on the one hand, its kind of surprising that Bucky isnt back for Brave New World. He has been in every other Cap movie to date, after all. But then again, its a big ol Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he has other places to be.Namely, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is audience bait on another big tentpole movie for Kevin Feige. Thunderbolts comes out in May, where Bucky will be hanging out with a team of non-Avengers that includes Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, Taskmaster, Ghost, Sentry, and Selina Meyer uh, Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Dont worry though. Im sure he and Sam will get to nod steelily if lovingly at each other in Avengers: Secret Wars.PlayThe Winter Soldiering of Isaiah Bradley, and His Young Avengers GrandsonCarl Lumblys Isaiah Bradley has one of the grimmest backstories in the MCU. A Korean War vet, he and other African-American soldiers were experimented on in an attempt to recreate the Super Soldier Serum that had turned Steve Rogers into Captain America. Though these efforts led to the deaths of most of his comrades, Bradley survived and was imprisoned by his own government for decades. Eventually he was freed, and it was in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that we learned of his story.Now, in the trailers for Brave New World, Isaiah appears to have fallen under the control of another malevolent force as he attempts to assassinate Harrison Fords President Ross. Was he Winter-Soldiered, in a sense? Hes clearly not doing this by his own accord, but who is controlling him and why do they want Ross dead?Meanwhile, Bradley has a grandson named Eli. In the comics, Eli is also a member of the Young Avengers and goes by the codename Patriot. Is it possible that he has the Super Soldier Serum coursing through his veins? The MCU sure has been setting up the Young Avengers for a long time now, so if they ever pull the trigger on it, Eli is ready and waiting for the call.PlaySharon Carter the TraitorThe once flirty neighbor in The Winter Soldier turned ally and love interest in Civil War, Sharon Carter turned out to be a straight-up villain in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Presumably because she was mad at the government for almost a decade of that fugitive life, the former Agent 13 re-fashioned herself into the Power Broker for reasons that remained mostly off-screen. She wrapped up her time on the show clearly up to no good and planning to use her fresh pardon for fresh crimes. The loose end factor here is two-fold: Why did she, dear perfect Peggy Carters niece, go so bad, and what would it take for her to go good again? She was down to sell super soldier serum to the highest bidder in TFATWS, and the jury is still out on if, as a Captain America character, Sharon even shows up in Brave New World at all. Its just as likely as it is not. Considering she played such a big part in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, this is a mess that might just stay messy, but who knows, maybe shes behind whatever serum gives the president his new look. Speaking of whichSharon CarterGeneral - Secretary - President - Red Hulk RossFinally getting past Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but perhaps in the wrong direction When was the last time we actually saw Thunderbolt Ross on screen? Chronologically speaking, that is. Of course, he was the brutish military man/antagonist and would-be father-in-law to Bruce Banner way back when Banner looked like Edward Norton and Ross looked like the late William Hurt. He subsequently popped up only here and there, most notably as a reminder that the Avengers had rules to follow just like everybody else in Civil War. He chased Natasha Romanoff for a while in the Black Widow solo film (which took place after Civil War but before Avengers: Infinity War), but only saw her again on a hologram conference call during Infinity War. He was also at Tony Starks funeral in Endgame, which, by our count, was his most recent, in-universe appearance.In the meantime, clearly hes had his sights on politics. President Matthew Ellis held the office for at least two terms in the present tense Marvel films, Dermot Mulroneys President Ritson was commander-in-chief for at least a Secret Invasion amount of time, but somewhere in there, ol Thunderbolt Ross entered the political thicket as well. And got or is about to get Red-Hulked along the way. His MCU origins in The Incredible Hulk leave plenty of options as to the how and when and why of his Hulking, one of which is well we guess its safe to assume he still has a daughterPlayThe Doctor Was a Woman, You Jerk, and She Was Betty RossWeve had no shortage of Hulk in the MCU and even no shortage of Hulk romance. The dudes got a kid and everything now. But do you know who it seems has been completely and rudely forgotten about it? His original flame, Betty Ross. I hope they broke up properly at some point.They kinda were already broken up the last, and first, time we saw Betty back in 2008s The Incredible Hulk. She had another boyfriend and everything, but we all know that dude was more of a spare and Bruce just kinda vanished so there cant have been any closure worth a damn and Bruce was the only Hulk for her and I just want Betty to be happy is all. Anyway, Liv Tyler is said to be returning for Brave New World, so stay tuned there.Banner and Betty were already broken up the last, and first, time we saw her back in 2008s The Incredible Hulk. And while were talking about 17-year-old MCU movies, Tim Blake Nelsons Samuel Sterns, a.k.a. Hulk villain The Leader, is also set to make his return in the film. Weve got a whole other article and video about this going up this week, so check that out too.That Celestial HandOne of the knocks of the MCU since Eternals came out in 2021 yeah, remember that one? is that theres still a giant goddamn hand (and head!) popping out of the ocean. Its the kind of mind-shattering, the world doesnt make any sense anymore thing that people start religions over, and its gotten barely a mention in the years since. Until now!Based on the trailers, it seems that Marvel is finally revisiting the thing in Brave New World, and it could have a big old nerdy implication for the MCU. Basically, the hand belongs to the cosmic being known as Tiamut, who was get this planted by the Celestials millions of years ago as a seed in the center of the Earth. There he grew, feeding off the energy of the human race, and was meant to one day emerge in a not entirely imaginative event called the Emergence, destroying the Earth along the way. (This actually happened in an alternate universe on What If?) But the Eternals realized this was kind of a sucky thing to do, and so they stopped the Celestial mid-Emerge. Hence giant hand (and head!) sticking out of the Indian Ocean. And hence that age-old Google search term Why there is a giant statue of a man sticking out of the ocean. Yes, we have an explainer on that on IGN.Here, let me google that for you.As for why Marvel is finally returning to all of this, as revealed at Comic-Con last summer, it turns out that Tiamuts body is the source of none other than the precious and super-fake Marvel metal alloy known as adamantium. That moment in the Brave New World trailers when President Ross is almost assassinated? Apparently hes announcing the adamantium that was recovered from the dead Celestial. Adamantium, of course, is bonded to Wolverines skeleton and claws, and the MCU couldnt use it in the past because the X-Men movie rights were tied up at Fox. But not anymore. As Kevin Feige himself said at Comic-Con, "Just when I think my nerdy life can't get more complete, I heard Harrison Ford say adamantium."How Messy Is the MCU World Now? Messy as This Recap?The end of TFATWS featured a typical Captain America inspirational speech, with Captain Wilson encouraging the leaders of the Global Repatriation Council to show some compassion. And Cap himself admitted there are no easy answers to everybody that was blipped, only to return and find other people living in their homes and loved ones having moved on or daughters being like 10 years older somehow instead of just the five years that had gone by (this is an Ant-Mans daughter in Endgame reference, obviously). But also, man, none of the other movies seem to have gotten the message. Thereve been almost 20 projects that take place chronologically after TFATWS, and it seems as though Marvel has moved well past being interested in the repercussions of the Blip. Like Sharon Carter, the Flag Smashers, and Baron Zemo (cant forget about him), it will be interesting to see if Brave New World can live up to being a sequel to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.Which is to say, can it be a sequel to The Incredible Hulk, The Winter Soldier, Eternals and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier while also answering lingering questions from three of the four previous Avengers movies? At 70 HP, its slightly bulkier than some other Basic Pokmon. Still, Leech Seeds 20 damage and self-healing effects dont do much in a competitive setting. However, as a collectible, this Illustration Rare Bulbasaur is stunning.Credit: The Pokmon CompanyVenusaur ex is a solid tank in Grass decks, with 340 HP and a built-in healing engine thanks to Tranquil Flower. Healing 60 damage per turn while Active gives it serious longevity and Dangerous Toxwhip hits hard while stacking Confusion and Poison. Its four Retreat Cost is painful, but Venusaur ex can be a frustrating wall to deal with in a control-style deck that wears opponents down.Credit: The Pokmon CompanyThis Illustration Rare Squirtle, is more of a collectors piece than a meta pick. Withdraw offers a coin-flip chance at temporary invincibility, and Skull Bashs 20 damage for two Energy is weak. At 60 HP, its not surviving long in competitive play. Still, this artwork is fantastic for collectors and makes for a great display card.Credit: The Pokmon CompanyBlastoise ex is an absolute powerhouse. Solid Shell reduces damage taken by 30, making it even harder to take down at 330 HP. Twin Cannons is a monster of an attack, dishing out up to 280 damage when discarding two Basic Water Energy. If youre running a Water deck with Energy acceleration, this is one of the best finishers available.Credit: The Pokmon CompanyAt best, Charmanders Blazing Destruction is situational, only helpful in removing a Stadium. Steady Firebreathings 30 damage for two Energy is below average, making this card far from competitive. But as a beautifully illustrated collectors card, its a top pick for fans of Charizards evolutionary line.Credit: The Pokmon CompanyCharizard ex is an aggressive attacker that thrives on damage output. Brave Wing can hit for 160 damage if Charizard already has damage counters on it, making it a strong early-game attack. Explosive Vortex deals a brutal 330 damage, though discarding three Fire Energy hurts its consistency. The quantum realm holds terrifying implications, insinuating so much uncertainty into our mundane, ordered view of reality.With that in mind, have you considered that our entire universe may actually be suspended in a "false vacuum," or in a state of faux-stability, and is merely waiting to collapse into a more stable state?Because scientists studying quantum field theory a framework that combines quantum mechanics, relativity, and basically all of physics definitely have. And in a new study published in the journal Nature, researchers have simulated the processes behind this phenomenon, perhaps giving us a glimpse at how the world could dramatically end."We're talking about a process by which the universe would completely change its structure," said study lead author Zlatko Papic, a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Leeds, in a statement about the work. "The fundamental constants could instantaneously change and the world as we know it would collapse like a house of cards."The false vacuum theory isn't new. But the researchers believe that their work is some of the first to simulate the mechanics behind the phenomenon on a large scale.What does it mean to be in a false vacuum? The idea suggests that the apparent lowest energy state throughout the cosmos, known as vacuum energy, is only temporary; in the future, it will decay or plunge to an even lower baseline."This phenomenon is comparable to a rollercoaster that has several valleys along its trajectory but only one 'true' lowest state, at ground level," said coauthor Jean-Yves Desaules at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria in the statement.If true, we're currently saddled in one of those "valleys" in a state of so-called metastability. Temporarily, albeit on the cosmic scale of millions or perhaps billions of years."If that is indeed the case, quantum mechanics would allow the universe to eventually tunnel to the lowest energy state or the 'true' vacuum and that process would result in a cataclysmic global event," Desaules added.At the heart of the theory are bubbles. Not the soda kind, but regions of "true vacuum" forming in the false vacuum. It's hypothesized that the formation of these bubbles will precipitate vacuum decay across the cosmos, perhaps not unlike a shaken-up soft drink that abruptly explodes all over the place.But the nitty-gritty physics of these bubbles has been difficult to pin down. So to explore these pernicious little structures, the researchers used a cutting-edge quantum machine known as a quantum annealer to simulate bubble formation in a system transitioning from a false to true vacuum.Armed with 5564-qubits, the basic units of quantum information, the annealer simulation revealed just how complex the bubble interactions are. The most important finding, according to the authors, is that the size of the bubbles are determined by volume energy gain and surface energy loss, which aligns with the theory."It's exciting to have these new tools that could effectively serve as a table-top 'laboratory' to understand the fundamental dynamical processes in the universe," Papic said.The takeaway? We need to understand how these bubbles interact, and not just just form, to really wrap our heads around vacuum decay. "This is a drop everything and reprioritize your day request."The list of verboten terms includes "DEIA," "accessibility," "indigenous people," "environmental justice," and finally: "anything specifically targeting women," such as "women in leadership, etc."Speaking anonymously to 404, a NASA employee confirmed that leadership were serious about the changes."We were absolutely required to scrub all DEI related or DEI adjacent topics and terms from all external websites by 5pm the 22nd," the employee said.Face of ChangeTo lead the agency down this path, Trump hand picked Janet Petro as the space agency's acting head a nomination that's reportedly surprised even NASA officials which makes her the first woman to serve as the agency's adminstrator."These programs divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in shameful discrimination," Petro wrote in a memo about the agency's termination of diversity programs.That's funny, because when Petro was the director of the Kennedy Space Center, she said this in a 2021 interview: "At NASA and Kennedy Space Center, our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility has been paramount to mission success. The entire NASA leadership team stands behind this commitment," Petro said. "KSC has embraced the link between diverse teams and innovation," she added.You could argue that Petro's hand was forced, but the fact that she accepted the job knowing full well what Trump's agenda was, not to mention her about-face on the issue, suggests she's doing it all with mercenary intent.On its surface, these policies might seem to contradict some of Trump's campaign rhetoric. As part of his anti-woke crusade, Trump has frequently vowed to "protect women" by, among other things, cracking down on transgender rights. So is this what protecting women looks like minimizing any outward gestures about their presence at NASA and elsewhere in government?Apparently yes. From the outside, the three-story building has an elegant and austere facade, with eight openings on each floor and a low arched entry supported by granite abutments. Its history starts way back in the days when Milan was ruled by Spain and its economy was flourishing. The Baroque building was constructed over the 16th and 17th centuries by the Mazenta family. When that noble family died out in the late 18th century, the property passed to the Prinetti family of Bergamo.In the principal bedroom, a custom designed bed in velvet and silk. Paysage fluvial is by Wouter Knijff and the stone stool is by De Cotiis.In the first half of the 19th century, the building was sold to the Sisters of St. Marcellina, who resided there for over a hundred years. Wired reported this week that a 19-year-old working for Elon Musks so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was given access to sensitive US government systems even though his past association with cybercrime communities should have precluded him from gaining the necessary security clearances to do so. As todays story explores, the DOGE teen is a former denizen of The Com, an archipelago of Discord and Telegram chat channels that function as a kind of distributed cybercriminal social network for facilitating instant collaboration.Since President Trumps second inauguration, Musks DOGE team has gained access to a truly staggering amount of personal and sensitive data on American citizens, moving quickly to seize control over databases at the U.S. Treasury, the Office of Personnel Management, the Department of Education, and the Department of Health and Human Resources, among others.Wired first reported on Feb. 2 that one of the technologists on Musks crew is a 19-year-old high school graduate named Edward Coristine, who reportedly goes by the nickname Big Balls online. One of the companies Coristine founded, Tesla.Sexy LLC, was set up in 2021, when he would have been around 16 years old.Tesla.Sexy LLC controls dozens of web domains, including at least two Russian-registered domains, Wired reported. One of those domains, which is still active, offers a service called Helfie, which is an AI bot for Discord servers targeting the Russian market. While the operation of a Russian website would not violate US sanctions preventing Americans doing business with Russian companies, it could potentially be a factor in a security clearance review.Mr. Coristine has not responded to requests for comment. In a follow-up story this week, Wired found that someone using a Telegram handle tied to Coristine solicited a DDoS-for-hire service in 2022, and that he worked for a short time at a company that specializes in protecting customers from DDoS attacks.A profile photo from Coristines WhatsApp account.Internet routing records show that Coristine runs an Internet service provider called Packetware (AS400495). Also known as DiamondCDN, Packetware currently hosts tesla[.]sexy and diamondcdn[.]com, among other domains.DiamondCDN was advertised and claimed by someone who used the nickname Rivage on several Com-based Discord channels over the years. A review of chat logs from some of those channels show other members frequently referred to Rivage as Edward.From late 2020 to late 2024, Rivages conversations would show up in multiple Com chat servers that are closely monitored by security companies. In November 2022, Rivage could be seen requesting recommendations for a reliable and powerful DDoS-for-hire service.Rivage made that request in the cybercrime channel Dstat, a core Com hub where users could buy and sell attack services. Dstats website dstat[.]cc was seized in 2024 as part of Operation PowerOFF, an international law enforcement action against DDoS services.Coristines LinkedIn profile said that in 2022 he worked at an anti-DDoS company called Path Networks, which Wired generously described as a network monitoring firm known for hiring reformed blackhat hackers. Wired wrote:At Path Network, Coristine worked as a systems engineer from April to June of 2022, according to his now-deleted LinkedIn rsum. Path has at times listed as employees Eric Taylor, also known as Cosmo the God, a well-known former cybercriminal and member of the hacker group UGNazis, as well as Matthew Flannery, an Australian convicted hacker whom police allege was a member of the hacker group LulzSec. Its unclear whether Coristine worked at Path concurrently with those hackers, and WIRED found no evidence that either Coristine or other Path employees engaged in illegal activity while at the company.The founder of Path is a young man named Marshal Webb. I wrote about Webb back in 2016, in a story about a DDoS defense company he co-founded called BackConnect Security LLC. On September 20, 2016, KrebsOnSecurity published data showing that the company had a history of hijacking Internet address space that belonged to others.Less than 24 hours after that story ran, KrebsOnSecurity.com was hit with the biggest DDoS attack the Internet had ever seen at the time. That sustained attack kept this site offline for nearly 4 days.The other founder of BackConnect Security LLC was Tucker Preston, a Georgia man who pleaded guilty in 2020 to paying a DDoS-for-hire service to launch attacks against others.The aforementioned Path employee Eric Taylor pleaded guilty in 2017 to charges including an attack on our home in 2013. Taylor was among several men involved in making a false report to my local police department about a supposed hostage situation at our residence in Virginia. In response, a heavily-armed police force surrounded my home and put me in handcuffs at gunpoint before the police realized it was all a dangerous hoax known as swatting.CosmoTheGod rocketed to Internet infamy in 2013 when he and a number of other hackers set up the Web site exposed[dot]su, which doxed dozens of public officials and celebrities by publishing the address, Social Security numbers and other personal information on the former First Lady Michelle Obama, the then-director of the FBI and the U.S. attorney general, among others. The group also swatted many of the people they doxed.Wired noted that Coristine only worked at Path for a few months in 2022, but the story didnt mention why his tenure was so short. A screenshot shared on the website pathtruths.com includes a snippet of conversations in June 2022 between Path employees discussing Coristines firing.According to that record, Path founder Marshal Webb dismissed Coristine for leaking internal documents to a competitor. Not long after Coristines termination, someone leaked an abundance of internal Path documents and conversations. Rivage expressed frustration with his time spent on Com-based communities, suggesting that its profitability had been oversold.I dont think theres a lot of money to be made in the com, Rivage lamented. Im not buying Heztner [servers] to set up some com VPN.Rivage largely stopped posting messages on Com channels after that. Wired reports that Coristine subsequently spent three months last summer working at Neuralink, Elon Musks brain implant startup.The trouble with all this is that even if someone sincerely intends to exit The Com after years of consorting with cybercriminals, they are often still subject to personal attacks, harassment and hacking long after they have left the scene.Thats because a huge part of Com culture involves harassing, swatting and hacking other members of the community. These internecine attacks are often for financial gain, but just as frequently they are perpetrated by cybercrime groups to exact retribution from or assert dominance over rival gangs.Experts say it is extremely difficult for former members of violent street gangs to gain a security clearance needed to view sensitive or classified information held by the U.S. government. Thats because ex-gang members are highly susceptible to extortion and coercion from current members of the same gang, and that alone presents an unacceptable security risk for intelligence agencies.And make no mistake: The Com is the English-language cybercriminal hacking equivalent of a violent street gang. ABC News says a federal judge was to rule today on whether DOGE should be blocked from accessing Department of Labor records, following a lawsuit alleging Musks team sought to illegally access highly sensitive data, including medical information, from the federal government.At least 13 state attorney general say they plan to file a lawsuit to stop DOGE from accessing federal payment systems containing Americans sensitive personal information, reports The Associated Press.Reuters reported Thursday that the U.S. Treasury Department had agreed not to give Musks team access to its payment systems while a judge is hearing arguments in a lawsuit by employee unions and retirees alleging Musk illegally searched those records.Ars Technica writes that The Department of Education (DoE) was sued Friday by a California student association demanding an immediate stop to DOGEs unlawfully digging through student loan data to potentially dismantle the DoE.

And now it seems like work on season 4 might be progressing quite nicely, as in an interview with Collider, J.K. Simmons shared he's started recording lines as Omni-Man for it. When asked if he'd started work on the fourth season yet, the actor joked, "Oh, we're on Season 12 already. I know it's a spoiler, but sorry," before going on to say more candidly, "Yeah, we actually have, dipped our toes. Or at least I have into the next season. And I'm looking forward to... At 110 million copies sold, it's the 15th best-selling manga of all time, having sold even more than massive series like Astro Boy, Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia, but since its release in 2006, it has never received an official English release.
