And when Quan became scared on set while filming the movies famous mine cart scene, Harrison Ford stepped up to comfort his young co-star.Quan recently shared that memory while speaking with EW about his top action roles. As related by Quan, he began to cry after he was frightened during the production of that action sequence. To put Quan at ease, Ford knelt in front of him and reassured the young actor that he was safe.Recommended VideosHe said, and Ill never forget this, Ke, I want you to remember, I will never hurt you,' said Quan. • Watch NASAs launch to splashdown video for Artemis II lunar mission
    www.digitaltrends.com
NASA has released a detailed animation (above) showing how the Artemis II mission will look from launch to splashdown. The Artemis II mission is currently scheduled to launch from Floridas Space Coast in early 2026 and will fly four astronauts around the moon before returning to Earth. The highly anticipated mission will last about 10 days and will be the first crewed test flight of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, and the Orion spacecraft. The Artemis II mission will mark the first time in five decades for humans to get so close to the moon, and will pave the way for a crewed lunar landing in the Artemis III mission, which could launch as early as 2027.Please enable Javascript to view this contentThe Artemis II crew, comprising NASA astronauts Christina Hammock Koch, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, have been training for the mission since their selection in April 2023.The crews flight will be similar to that taken by the Artemis I mission, which in 2022 sent an uncrewed Orion capsule to within about 80 miles above the lunar surface before flying past the moon to a distance of 268,563 miles (432,194 kilometers) from Earth, a record for a human-ready capsule. However, while the Artemis I Orion traveled about 40,000 miles (64,000 km) beyond the moon, the Artemis II crew will travel about 4,600 miles (7,400 km) past it. In doing so, the astronauts will become the first humans in more than 50 years to lay eyes on the lunar far side.During this period, there will be an anticipated communication blackout between mission control and the spacecraft, NASA says in the video. As the crew returns from the far side of the moon, Orion is drawn home by Earths gravity in a free return trajectory, ensuring a fuel-efficient four-day trip.Orion and the crew will enter Earths atmosphere at a speed of nearly 25,000 miles per hour (40,230 kilometers per hour). The spacecrafts heat shield will protect it from extremely hot temperatures as it hurtles toward Earth, with parachutes slowing its descent ahead of splashdown. The crew will then be taken from the capsule before undergoing health checks, their place in their place in the history books assured.Editors Recommendations

  • How the XB-1 aircraft went supersonic without a sonic boom
    www.newscientist.com
The experimental supersonic aircraft XB-1Boom SupersonicWhen the experimental XB-1 aircraft broke the sound barrier three times during its first supersonic flight on 28 January, it did not produce a sonic boom audible from the ground, according to US company Boom Supersonic. This confirms what weve long believed: supersonic travel can be affordable, sustainable and friendly to those onboard and on the ground, said Blake Scholl, Founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic, in a press release. AdvertisementAs an aircraft pushes through the atmosphere at high speeds, it changes the air pressure around it, creating sound waves. And when a supersonic flight surpasses the speed of sound Mach 1, or about 1224 kilometres per hour these sound waves combine to form a shock wave that spreads away from the flight path. This sonic boom can travel far enough to reach the ground, where it produces an extremely loud noise, rattles buildings and even breaks glass.Sonic booms over land are so disruptive that they contributed to the retirement of fabled commercial airliner Concorde in 2003 and spurred many countries to prohibit commercial supersonic aircraft. Since then, aerospace engineers have been trying to develop aircraft designs that can go supersonic without the boom.In this case, the XB-1 took advantage of a physics phenomenon called the Mach cutoff. Because sound moves more slowly at higher altitudes, an aircraft breaching the sound barrier at those heights will produce a boom that cannot reach the ground if the boom moves downward, the increasing speed of sound will deflect it, pushing its shockwaves upward instead. Receive a weekly dose of discovery in your inbox.Sign up to newsletterThe trick is that temperature and wind also affect sound speeds, so the ideal altitude and speed for the supersonic aircraft will depend on atmospheric conditions. The actual challenge is getting very accurate atmospheric forecasts on temperature and on wind computing the practical Mach-cutoff flight speed is pretty straightforward from there, says Bernd Liebhardt at the German Aerospace Center in Germany.Boom Supersonic says that XB-1s most recent and final test flight, on 10 February, also reached supersonic speeds without the boom. Now the company is using what it learned from the test flights to help its future commercial airliner, called Overture, achieve the same feat. Supersonic overland flights would be up to 50 per cent faster than todays commercial airliners. That could make the travel time from New York to Los Angeles 90 minutes shorter.Flying at supersonic speeds during shorter overland routes could also burn less fuel than flying at the aerodynamically worst speed right below the sound barrier says Liebhardt. But he cautioned that taking advantage of Mach cutoff is probably more of a niche use case for supersonic business jet users. It would deliver less of an economic payoff for a commercial airline service.Topics:transport/aviation/flight

  • Tearing my ACL led me to become a doctor and now I treat the US ski team. Here are my tips for protecting your knees.
    www.businessinsider.com
Dr. Julia Iafrate, DO, practices sports medicine, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. She's a former competitive skier who tore her ACL.She says hormones increase the risk of an ACL injury but aren't the only factor. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Julia Iafrate, DO, a physician with the Center for Women's Sports Medicine at NYU Langone. It has been edited for length and clarity.I first started skiing when I was about 6. I grew up in Canada, where skiing was a way of life. I used to race until I tore my ACL, a major ligament in the knee joint, at 18. Once that was surgically repaired, I had two more back-to-back knee injuries that required surgery. That ended my competitive ski career but kicked off my interest in medicine. Now, I'm a double-board-certifieddoctor in sports medicineand physical medicine and rehabilitation. I'm one of the doctors who treat the US Ski Team. In my work, I'm seeing more discussion about the impact of hormones on sports injuries for women. Here's what we know about the role of hormones in injury and how to prevent getting hurt on the slopes.Women are more prone to ACL injuryWomen are twice as likely to tear their ACLs than men are in fact, some research puts the risk much higher, at eight times the risk men have. There are a few reasons for this. Women tend to have wider hips than men, which impacts the knee angle. Anatomically, this can increase the risk of ACL injury. In addition, broadly speaking, women have less neuromuscular control than men. Boys are often encouraged into sports like weightlifting and biologically have more muscle mass. Women tend toward sports like figure skating or dancing, where strength isn't the priority. Since muscle strength provides stability, many women have less stability in their ACLs compared to men.Hormones play a role tooHormones are also at play. We need more research on this, but a few studies suggest that women are more likely to injure their ACLs when they're ovulating. This is the time of the menstrual cycle when estrogen is highest. Estrogen can make ligaments less stiff, increasing the risk for injury. This is the same reason women might experience ligament injuries during pregnancy. Since body temperature also increases during ovulation, the body may be more prone to inflammation and injury. To be clear, we would never blame an ACL injury purely on hormones. But, increased estrogen combined with fatigue, lack of muscle control, and biomechanical strains on the ligament can have an impact. However, women aren't the only ones with a correlation between hormone changes and injury. For males, increased testosterone can increase competitiveness or risk-taking behavior, creating more risk for injury.Dynamic exercises can helpFlexibility is often celebrated, but without stability, it's not great. Women and everyone else need flexibility and stability to protect their ligaments. Building strength is a great way to increase stability.Focus on exercises that mimic the real world and use multiple muscle groups simultaneously. Squats and leg presses are great examples. These exercises train multiple muscle groups to work together and respond to different stimuli. That will help on the slopes when you need to suddenly navigate around other skiers, stay steady on a patch of ice, or land a jump.Quit while you're aheadWhen you notice you're tired during an exercise, your muscles are already fatigued. That reduces your performance, and it's one of the reasons so many injuries happen on the last run of the day.Remember, no bear is chasing you. You can always ski another day, so don't push it once you begin to feel tired. Head to the lodge and enjoy aprs instead.Be mindful of whole-body changesWhether you're on the national ski team or hitting the slopes as a casual hobby, it's important to be aware of changes to the whole body during your menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause.I had my first baby 15 months ago, and I still can't run with the same biomechanics I had before. I've had to understand that and give myself grace in getting back into exercise. By listening to your body and acknowledging the changes that hormones can bring, you can prevent an injury, which is much easier than trying to repair one after it happens.

  • Dismantling the CFPB would turn the consumer finance world into the 'wild, wild west,' its former director says
    www.businessinsider.com
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's HQ was shut down on Sunday.Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency, wants to eliminate the agency. The first director of CFPB told BI that Musk's calls to dismantle the bureau are "totally unethical."The first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warned against eliminating the independent watchdog agency, telling Business Insider that it would strip oversight of financial firms and harm US consumers."We'd be back to the wild, wild west for financial services that affect families all over the country in terms of what their terms would be on their credit cards, on their mortgages, and other products. There would be no oversight of that," Richard Cordray, who first led the CFBP when it was established in 2011 after the Great Recession to help prevent another financial crisis,"Companies could act in their own interests at the expense of consumers," he added. "It would be as though we were saying to a neighborhood, 'Go ahead and enforce your laws. We will withdraw the police. We will not have any kind of enforcement of the law.'"On Sunday, the CFPB told its staff that its DC headquarters would be closed thisOn Monday, the CFPB's new acting director, Russell Vought, told employees in an email seen by BI to "stand down from performing any work task."The CFPB in fluxThe CFPB has had a shake-up in leadership since Trump took office. While Martinez has served as the bureau's associate director and chief operating officer since February 2023, on February 1, Trump fired Rohit Chopra, the former CFPB director under President Joe Biden. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took on the role of acting director of the agency until Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, took over the role on February 7.Vought, CFBP's new acting director, was an author of the Project 2025 Mandate for Leadership, a conservative road map for the first 180 days of the Trump administration that outlines policy suggestions ranging from dismantling the Department of Homeland Security to scaling back USAID operations some of which have already been implemented by the Trump White House.Project 2025's playbook calls for abolishing the CFPB, calling it an unconstitutional, "highly politicized, damaging, and utterly unaccountable federal agency," instead recommending the bureau's consumer protection duties be rolled up under the Federal Trade Commission. While the FTC has a Bureau of Consumer Protection, which has some overlap with the duties of the CFPB, the CFPB is the only federal bureau completely dedicated to protecting consumers from anticompetitive, deceptive, or unfair business practices in the financial services industry. In a Saturday post on X, Vought wrote that the "spigot" for the agency's funding "is now being turned off."Elon Musk calls for the end of CFPBVought's move comes after Elon Musk, the head of DOGE, repeatedly called to eliminate the agency as part of his broader effort to slash federal spending. "RIP CFPB," he said on X.The CFPB's oversight of the financial industry has included a lawsuit filed against Capital One over allegations that it illegally charged customers over $2 billion in interest, the return of money to student-loan borrowers from private lender Navient, and rules to cap overdraft fees and remove medical debt from credit reports.Cordray said Musk's targeting of CFPB could be a conflict of interest, considering X has plans to provide financial services on the platform.Musk has sharedeverything app," including a digital wallet and payment system. On January 28, X CEO Linda Yaccarino announced a partnership with Visa that will allow peer-to-peer money transfers with what the company calls XMoney,"It's a direct conflict of interest and totally unethical for him to be making judgments about how the CFPB should exist that are not legislated by Congress and that might serve his own financial interests at the expense of the public across the country," Corday said.Representatives for the White House, Musk, and the CFPB did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. Richard Cordray, former director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, also served as the chief operating officer of the Federal Student Aid office. Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post via Getty Images Congress established the CFPB under the Dodd-Frank Act and gave it the regulatory authority to enforce and expand on existing laws, such as the Consumer Financial Protection Act, meant to protect consumers and guide financial firms. The agency is funded by the Federal Reserve instead of Congress' appropriations process, which has led to criticism from many lawmakers who say Congress should oversee the CFPB's funding."The CFPB was supposed to be bipartisan in a way nonpartisan and actually independent of politics and meant to implement good policies to protect American consumers," Antoinette Schoar, a finance professor at MIT Sloan School of Management, told BI. Schoar was a CFPB's inaugural advisory board member, lending her expertise in consumer finance to help develop some of the bureau's policies.Musk vaguely acknowledged the CFPB's contributions on Thursday, saying that "they did above zero good things, but still need to go."Escalating attacks on the bureauThe X owner's desire to shut down CFPB also reflects President Donald Trump's opposition to the consumer watchdog agency. During his first term, Trump took steps to reduce the CFPB's influence and appointed Mick Mulvaney as its acting director.Trump "spent four years in the Oval Office and obviously the CFPB shifted direction during that time pretty dramatically, was much more timid, and not aggressive on behalf of consumers," Cordray said. "But they did enforce the law."Under the new Trump administration, things are different: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessentrecently ordered the CFPBto halt most of its work and pause all public communications, an email obtained by Business Insider showed. The National Treasury Employees Union, which represents employees in the CFPB, on Sunday filed suit against Vought, urging a judge to block DOGE officials from accessing employee information and to block Vought's directives to "cease all supervision and examination activity" and "cease all stakeholder engagement."Cordray said that Musk has no authority to "delete" the consumer watchdog agency, saying that "Congress is the lawmaking authority in the country" and that Musk "is not the Congress."Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts said in a post on X on Saturday that Musk's role was a "blatant conflict of interest.""Elon wants the CFPB gone so tech billionaires can profit from apps, like X, that offer bank-like services but don't follow financial laws that keep people's money safe," the senator wrote. "Musk wants to use the government to put more in his pockets."The White House recently designated Musk as an unpaid "special government employee," which means the billionaire isn't subject to the standard ethics and conflict-of-interest rules that official government employees typically encounter. One of the laws introduced as part of the Ethics Reform Act of 1989 stipulates that federal workers, including an SGE, are prohibited from making government decisions that impact their financial interests. However, the law has an exception that says the official appointing the SGE

  • Games Inbox: Are you getting a Nintendo Switch 2 at launch?
    metro.co.uk
How tempted are you? (YouTube)The Tuesday letters page is unimpressed by Sonys compensation for the PSN outage, as one reader thinks a new God Of War game set in Greece is a bad idea.To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukPLEASE NOTE: Due to staff illness there will be no Inbox on Wednesday. Normal service should resume on Thursday.Risk takersIf theres one thing that gives me confidence about the Nintendo Switch 2 launch its that theyre taking a risk. I know they only mean in terms of making lots of them, even though they dont know if theyll all sell, but as usual in the games industry, and I guess most everything else, its the smaller companies that take all the risks and the big ones that just pump out the same old slop all the time. Its not a good idea to idolise any company but I would certainly be more willing to take a risk on Nintendo, in terms of hardware and games, than I would anyone else. The only risk Sony seems willing to take at the moment is whether they can get away with no proper compensation for the PSN outage. So Im going to buy a Switch 2 at launch. Even though its not really a risk and I can just sell it on easily if theres a problem. I feel the companies that actually make an effort and dont take their customers for granted should be rewarded. Thats why Im getting a Switch 2 and Id be interested to know who else is too.LudoWar without endThe idea of sending Kratos back to Greece, whether its a prequel or whatever, seems completely pointless to me. The whole reason the new games are good is because they completely rethink the dumb edgelord attitude of the originals and make Kratos seem like a real character.Even if theyre planning to remake and retcon the originals that seems pointless. The series is good because Kratos character shows growth and messing with that seems a very bad idea.I can understand they might be worried that theres nowhere to really go with the series though. I dont think anyones all that interested in Atreus and Im not sure what a game set in Egypt would be about. Is he just going to kill another set of gods for whatever reason? In reality, youd have say that the story for everyone had reached a natural end and there doesnt need to be another game. Except there has to be because it sells and so, like everything else, it can never really end.TollyNecessary evilNot for the first time I find myself hoping that Monster Hunter is a big hit, while having absolutely no interest in playing it myself. Ive never liked the games and no matter how well this one reviews I cant imagine myself getting it. Its the only major Capcom franchise Ive never liked and yet somehow its their most successful.Theres lots of reasons I dont really like it but the main one is that the combat is so awkward and clunky. Its the literal opposite of all of Capcoms other action games and for a while I really resented it. Then I realised that the success of the games were helping to pay for the stuff I do like, like Resident Evil, the new Onimusha, and hopefully the rumoured new Devil May Cry.So my attitude about the game kind of changed and now I consider myself to be technically a Monster Hunter fan. Not because I enjoying playing it but because I want it to succeed so it can fund the games I do like.Prog9Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukBusiness as usualI think its a lesson to all publishers that if even a giant company like Take-Two is leaving the PC version till after, when they can make a proper job of it, you probably should too. So many PC versions of console games are terrible at launch, just because theyre rushing them out to come out at the same time as the console versions. Although even separate releases, like for Sony games, are often bad too, even though theyve had plenty of time to get them right.Games not working at launch might still be a hot issue for consoles but its just par for the course on PC and Im sick of it. Id like to think Rockstar will do a decent job now but, to be honest, I think their beef is more that they hate mods, so they probably want to delay the release so they can concentrate on stopping them after the console versions are already out and sorted.Colbat84To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a webbrowser thatsupports HTML5videoUp NextMaximum anticipationIm still waiting for the first third party company to accidentally reveal something about the Switch 2, and what Nintendos response to that will be. I think not having the Nintendo Direct until April is a great idea. The reveal showed so little that people are now busy imagining and speculating and generating more and more hype. This is why I think the modern preference to not announce a game properly until very close to release is such a bad idea. The earlier you know the more anticipation there is. Its only hearing about the game a hundred times, and getting sick of it before its out, thats a problem and that definitely isnt an issue at the moment! The only real downside to Nintendos approach is that that people can begin to assume certain things and when thats not what happens they get disappointed, but I dont see much sign of that. We have so little idea of whats going to be shown that as long as at least theres some good stuff it doesnt really matter what it ends up being.KorbieThe best kind of correctSorry but just wanted to suggest a correction to Adams article on Xbox and PlayStation sales on Friday, as my OCD would like to see it corrected! He wrote: That means PlayStation 5 has roughly 70% of overall current generation sales, compared to 30% for Xbox Series X/S. For Microsoft, this ratio is worse than the previous generation. The Xbox One sold 58 million units against 117 million for PlayStation 4, so it had roughly 50% of sales, if you exclude the Switch.I think this should read so it had roughly 33% of sales, as 58 million is 33% of 175 million (the overall generation sales of both consoles, which is what he was comparing).Stephen, ManchesterGC: He probably meant to write 50% of the PlayStation 4s sales but youre right, well correct it.Equal treatmentIm not sure that South Of Midnight sounds like something Id play even for free on Game Pass. I really dont think a slightly different setting (its still America, at the end of the day) is going to make all that much difference and the gameplay sounds super generic.I really dont know why Microsoft bought such a mediocre studio and yet then shut down Tango Gameworks. Im willing to bet South Of Midnight gets considerably lower reviews than Hi-Fi Rush but if Compulsion Games somehow doesnt get closed down that will be grossly unfair. Not that I want anyone to lose their job you understand, but Microsoft are going to have a lot of explaining to do if they arent seen to be acting fairly.JhonnieCustomer tiersSonys response to the PSN outage has been predictably awful. All they care about is PlayStation Plus subscribers and not only have they not done anything for anyone else but theyve not even acknowledged it affected them either. They havent explained why it happened either, which makes me think it was some kind of hack or attack, or otherwise they wouldnt be embarrassed to say. That in turn means its likely to happen again and often, and I very much doubt their response is going to be any better the next time.I would expect Nintendos response to be much the same, except I dont really remember this ever happening to them. Although maybe thats because nobody uses their online services enough for it ever to be an issue.I only vaguely remember this happening to Xbox before and I think you can say that one advantage they do have over Sony is that their online is better and more reliable. Although not reason enough to choose Xbox over PlayStation. That might not always be the case though and as everything becomes digital only, all the time then Sony are going to be in a bad spot if they start to earn a reputation for being unreliable and ungenerous with compensation. As usual though, Im sure theyll only react when absolutely forced to and by then it will be too late and the damage will be permanently done. These companies never learn.FocusInbox also-ransCount me as another person who feels that Resident Evil 5 is worth a remake. It wasnt that bad a game and could be made into something truly great, I feel. Its Resident Evil 6 thats beyond saving and I see thats not the one thats rumoured to be getting a re-release.ChancerIf Sony has a State of Play on Valentines Day wouldnt that be in the evening, as usual? Thats early morning in the US but what does that say about where they think all their European fans are going to be at that time?OggieMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • Paddington in Peru Paints by Numbers but Still Delights
    gizmodo.com
Paddington in Peru is finally out this week stateside and thankfully its a solid enough entry in Studio Canals franchise. Its directed by Dougal Wilson, who took over the reins from Paul King; King helmed the first two films and has a story credit for this third film. The script was co-written by James Lamont and Jon Foster, the duo behind Paddingtons recent animated show, and the new films team sticks closely to the formula of the previous two filmsmaybe too closely. Ben Whishaw is back voicing Paddington Bear, who ventures to Peru on a quest to find Aunt Lucy (voiced by Imelda Staunton) after receiving news from her bear retirement homes Reverend Mother (Olivia Colman) that shes mysteriously wandered off into the Amazon. Hes not alone on the trip to South America; seeking one last family outing before becoming empty nesters, the Brown family also tags along. The crew includes original actors Hugh Bonneville as Mr. Brown, Madeline Harris as Judy, Samuel Joslin as Jonathan, and Julie Walters as Mrs. Bird, with Emily Mortimer taking over the role of Mrs. Brown from Sally Hawkins. Mortimer brings a different characterization to Mrs. Brown that feels like an alternate timeline for the household; her wholesomeness and nurturing nature are much more subdued. It completely changes the family dynamic and the story being told here, which gives Mrs. Brown the subplot of dealing with Judy and Jonathan being grown up enough to move out and go to college. Its a story that Hawkins more individualistic and adventurous Mrs. Brown might not have fit into (we also think Hawkins and Bonneville had a more believable couple vibe). But in some respects this helps transition the role between performers, which along with flashbacks and a new version of Paddington meeting Mrs. Brown eased us into this film. Even still, its gonna take some time to get used to this new Brown family. Sony Pictures For a movie that takes us out of London, Paddington in Peru plays it safe for the most part. Antonio Banderas shows up as Hunter Cabot, a charismatic guide with a boat (didnt he play this character in the last Indiana Jones?) who helps the Browns look for Aunt Lucy along the Amazon. He and his sailor daughter Gina (Carla Tous) agree to help the Browns even though for Cabot, it leads to some temptation to hunt for the gold of El Doradowhich Paddingtons origin is somehow is connected to. The El Dorado quest feels like such a Mad Libs generic trope that we werent sold on it at first. On top of that, the first two acts pack in a predictable series of set-ups that remix elements of the first two films, down to the villains giving the same energy as Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grants baddies. The journey to El Dorado ends up feeling nonsensically slapstick in ways that manage some chuckles but feel unevenly paced. The whimsy and chaos fans have come to expect from Kings Paddington filmsthat he handled with perfect attention to paceis missing until the last act, when the themes of this somewhat messy film became clearer and Peru feels like it earns its place in the franchise. Theres Mrs. Brown coping with a nest emptying, and the Cabots breaking generational curses with a light wink at the role exploration and religion have had in regards to colonization. But its Paddingtons journey in all the films, from not being accepted in London to going back to his country to figure out where he belongsand Paddington in Peru cleverly addresses the xenophobic ignorance that often gets projected onto marginalized folks whose home is where theyve arrived to. It was affirming in all the ways Paddington can be, and it made us cry. Paddington in Peru isnt perfect, but it left us certain of one thing: we cant wait for Paddingtons next chapters. Paddington in Peru opens February 14. Want more io9 news? Brewing extra coffee and sharing it with neighbors creates a caf-like atmosphere. Filling a large bookshelf with books donated by nearby residents makes it feel like a library. Watching a film together on a projector turns the space into a makeshift movie theater.Save this picture!By stacking these small ideas"extending daily life just a little"the project seeks to gently nurture connections between residents and the neighborhood. So that people feel they are "sharing something together whether they're inside or outside," materials, architectural elements, and floor levels are treated continuously, softening the boundary between indoors and outdoors. This seamless connection helps bring people closer, both spatially and socially.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! In this area, a "plant-sharing network," originally started among a few neighbors, has expanded to dozens of households. Such proactive participation demonstrates the neighborhood's vitality. In response, this project's faade features a three-dimensional planting strategy. The first floor is an open space directly connected to the street, while from the second floor upward, plants propagated through this network occupy a diagonal opening that allows southern sunlight to pass through. In both plan and section, terraces and interior rooms alternate, creating a lush environment reminiscent of living amid forest trees.Save this picture!By sharing spaces and everyday pleasures in this way, the architect aims to gradually build gentle, fulfilling relationships. They believe that "sharing daily life as an engaged participant" ultimately forms the foundation for sustaining a vibrant urban community.Save this picture!Since the completion of this building, it has hosted a variety of events, including cafs, lectures, workshops, and film screeningsactivities that have generated multiple networks and begun influencing other locations as well. More communities have reached out with comments like, "We want our ground floor to be like this building," or "We'd love to implement this concept elsewhere," indicating a growing interest in similar endeavors.Save this picture!Save this picture!Small-scale, everyday activities are gradually intersecting, illuminating a future where a diverse range of people in the neighborhood connect more naturally. It will be exciting to see what kinds of new interactions and initiatives take root here and how far their influence may spread.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeKamakuraStudioOfficePublished on February 11, 2025Cite: "HOUSE F / KamakuraStudio" 10 Feb 2025. • DNA From Cave Dirt Unearths Genetic Roots of the Red Lady of El Mirn
    www.discovermagazine.com
In the cave of El Mirn in northern Spain, intrigue surrounds a woman who was laid to rest there 19,000 years ago. Her bones, coated in an earthy shade of red derived from the natural pigment ochre, led archaeologists to give her the name the "Red Lady of El Mirn;" new research, however, hastaken a closer look not at her red-hued bones, but at the soil within the cave.In a study recently published in Nature Communications, researchers analyzed sedimentary ancient DNA, or sedaDNA, refining their understanding of the Red Lady of El Mirns heritage. In addition, they detected genetic evidence showing the consistent presence of several carnivore species that often visited the cave when humans werent present.A Colorful BurialAlthough archaeologists started exploring El Mirn in 1996, remnants of the Red Lady weren't found until 2010. Her remains, including an array of mostly intact bones, were concealed in a narrow space behind a limestone block etched with engravings. Researchers speculate that these engravings were potentially meant to mark the Red Ladys burial site a V shape carved into the block, for example, may have signified a womans burial in particular. The idea that the Red Lady was intentionally buried is lent more credence by her ochre-coated bones. Those who buried her covered her body in ochre obtained from a location outside of the cave as a kind of ritual offering. At some point, a carnivore possibly a wolf dug up parts of the skeleton, including a tibia that it gnawed on, leaving teeth marks. Researchers hypothesize that the skeleton was later coated in ochre again and reburied, meaning the involvement of ochre in this ancient burial process must have held some significance. The Red Lady's AncestryThe researchers were able to recover three human DNA samples of Solutrean lineage from sedimentary ancient DNA; ancient populations of the Solutrean tool-making culture lived around Southwestern France and Spain during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the most recent ice age in history that occurred roughly between 26,000 and 19,000 years ago. These people had moved south during a period of major climate upheaval, preceding the Red Lady and contributing to her DNA. The El Mirn cave, then, was likely a refugium for ancient humans during and immediately after the LGM.In the future, researchers will aim to recover nuclear DNA from the El Mirn sediments, which could provide an even more detailed look at the genetic makeup of the Red Lady.Carnivores in the CaveThe new study shows that El Mirn was home to several animals throughout the Paleolithic Era. Most notably, carnivores like the one that chewed on the Red Ladys tibia frequented the cave during the Paleolithic. Physical evidence of animal remains is sparse in the cave, so researchers turned to sedimentary ancient DNA from dirt to supplement their studies. The researchers recovered DNA belonging to carnivorous species like spotted hyena, Iberian lynx, and dhole, a species of wild dog now only found in eastern and southeastern Asia. Carnivores such as these ones likely came to the cave to scavenge leftovers from humans. DNA from multiple herbivores was found as well, including reindeer, rhinoceros, and wooly mammoth. The results demonstrate the potential of sedimentary ancient DNA as a valuable method that can fill in gaps in the archaeological record when physical remains like bones are limited.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards.
