    CMYK, a publisher known for taking chances in the tabletop space, is announcing something very different for 2025. The publisher that brought you breakout board game hits like Wavelength and Daybreak has a new line of high-concept card games called Magenta. Polygon received an exclusive early preview of the first four games in the series last month, and recently sat down with the team at CMYK to learn more about the project.Magenta is a fledgling series of small-box games curated by CMYK co-founder James Nathan Spencer with creative direction by co-founder Alex Hague. The pair tells Polygon that the inspiration comes from a shared love of card games in all their forms. Magenta is also an attempt to elevate traditional card games back into the mainstream of the hobby, which has for a long time seen card games dismissively relegated to the role of so-called filler games.Theres this kind of romantic idea of the kind of card game night that maybe your parents had, or more likely your grandparents had, Hague said on a recent video call. They would have friends over, they would make some drinks, [and] they would play cards all night. And so its kind of this weird mirror image of maybe whats happened in the board game space.We really had to think a lot about What does a CMYK version of a card game line look like? Thats how Magenta was born.The first four games in the Magenta line are numbered, with the boxes designed to sit on the shelf in order. They include Fives, a thrilling trick-taking game in the style of Hearts or Spades, from Taiki Shinzawa; Duos, a team-based Rummy-style card game by Johannes Schmidauer-Knig; Figment, a novel card game based on optical illusions by Wolfgang Warsch; and Fruit Fight, a push-your-luck style game from the prolific Reiner Knizia. All feature the same magenta-colored slipcase, with common iconography, fonts, and graphic design elements. They also make use of the same, weighty pressed-paper disks and, like other products in the CMYK lineup, contain few if any plastic components.The Magenta line is intended to be a resource for players, a way to supplement their at-home collections with excellent card games to go alongside beloved board games. To that end, CMYK is carefully labeling these card games with the kind of information that board game players need when theyre looking for new experiences. Each box will include traditional information like the number of players and the length of time needed to play. But it will also have something new: text to call out the mood that the game is looking to evoke.The idea struck us that what you really want when you see those things [like number of players and length of playtime] on the back is [the answer to a question]: What kind of time am I going to have playing this game?, said Hague. [] To me, at least when I look at the back of a box, thats kind of one of [the] main things that I want to know if Ive never played the game before. What is the feel of it going to be and does that match the people that Im playing the game with?Perhaps the biggest shared feature between all four games is the set of easy-to-read, plainly-written instructions. In our experience testing the games, these slim pamphlets made them terrifically simple to learn and teach on the fly even with young or inexperienced players at the table.Making manuals is absolutely one of CMYK and Alexs superpowers, said Magenta line curator James Nathan Spencer. Hague said that the company has been through the trenches of manual design, especially with Daybreak, which required multiple international translations. Fans of video tutorials are in luck as well, as the developers tell Polygon that Shut Up and Sit Down co-founder Quentin Quinns Smith has been hired on to perform the Magenta lines tutorial videos.The first four games in the Magenta line will go up for sale soon on CMYKs website for $25 each, and its the companys hope that theyll also be available at game shops and larger retailers. Regardless, CMYK has big plans for Magenta, including new games designed in-house and more clever, curated versions of beloved classics.We kind of want Magenta to almost feel like the Criterion Collection of card games, said Hague. We really do want to have several dozen games in this line, and to have them all feel like they are at a level where they feel like absolute classics of the card game form.

    The Paddington movies are full of whimsical joy because of the polite and wonderful bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) at their center and also because of the absolutely over-the-top villains who scheme against him. Yes, audiences went gaga for Hugh Grant as pompous fading actor Phoenix Buchanan in 2017s Paddington 2, but Nicole Kidman as a cutthroat taxidermist in the original 2014 Paddington movie is just as bombastically evil.And the third installment of the Paddington movie universe, Paddington in Peru, adds another campy villain to the canon with a fun twist.[Ed. note: This post contains some setup spoilers for Paddington in Peru.]Helmed by Dougal Wilson, taking over from Paul King, who directed the first two installments, Paddington in Peru picks up a couple of years after Paddington 2. In the years since, thereve been many changes for the sweet bears adoptive family, the Browns. Those include an actor swap for family mother Mary Brown, from Sally Hawkins to Emily Mortimer, and a focus on the kids growing older, and their parents grappling with them preparing to leave the nest.But when Paddington gets a whiff that something might be up with his beloved Aunt Lucy (a bear voiced by Imelda Staunton), the Brown family decides to take a family vacation to Peru. First, they just mean to cheer up Aunt Lucy. But when they arrive at the Home for Retired Bears, where she lives, they learn shes gone missing. While there, they encounter the suspiciously cheerful Reverend Mother (The Favourite Oscar-winner and Wicked Little Letters co-star Olivia Colman), who runs the home, and the broodingly handsome Hunter Cabot (Antonio Banderas), who captains the river boat that the Browns hire to explore the Amazon as they set out to find Lucy.In true Paddington movie fashion, both these comically exaggerated personalities spark suspicions and suggest villainy. However, what makes Paddington in Peru particularly fun is that there are reasons to doubt both of them, and wonder which one is really the villain. Sure, Hunter is talking to ghosts in his head about his insatiable desire for gold, and how hell stop at nothing to make his conquistador ancestors proud. But what the heck is up with the Reverend Mother and her mysterious secret room?Paddington in Peru smashes an archaeological adventure into a family escapade, because apparently, Paddington has a clue thats vital to finding the lost city of El Dorado. Sure! Stranger things have happened in the Paddington world, to be totally honest. And a proper Paddington take on a well-trodden genre is as scrumptious as a marmalade sandwich. Its also amusing to see the Brown family out of their comfort zone in London some of the movies best jokes come from the juxtaposition of their sedentary city living with the calamity that comes with a jungle adventure gone wrong.Still, the dueling maybe-villains provide the most gags. Banderas and Colman both have amazing comedic timing, and know how to fully sell their characters exaggerated screen personalities. Colman in particular does a smashing job of keeping the same unnerving smile plastered on her face the entire time. For instance, she gently tells the Browns housekeeper Mrs. Bird (Julie Walters) that she does in fact have a secret room behind a pipe organ, but no, she cannot possibly tell Mrs. Bird what is behind it because its a secret. All while smiling without a break.Since there are few characters outside Reverend Mother, Hunter Cabot, and the Brown family, theres not as much room for the signature Paddington sweetness, wherein the adorable bear can melt the heart of even the toughest thug in prison with his big brown eyes and unflappably polite manners. But what Paddington in Peru lacks in that department, it makes up for with humor, with some of the funniest moments in the franchise.Unlike the previous Paddington movies, where its pretty clear from the get-go who the Big Bad is (even if Paddington and his family dont realize it until long after the audience), Wilson doesnt reveal the real villain until the movies final act. That isnt simply a lazy gotcha plot twist, or a move meant to obscure anyones true motives; it just means we get two hilarious antagonists for the price of one, going back and forth on whos more villain-y. Their grandiose performances, coupled with the general fish-out-of-water hijinks of the buttoned-up Brown family exploring the jungle, and the sheer hilarity of a setting where Home for Retired Bears is a real thing no one questions, packs Paddington in Peru full of giggles. While it doesnt hit as emotionally hard as the other movies, its still a beary good time with its cackling, cartoony villains.Paddington in Peru is out in theaters on Feb. 14.

Ive worn an Apple Watch on my ankle to keep it out of the way during kettlebell workouts, and thats also a common placement for people who walk while they work, or who have a job or hobby that isnt compatible with constant watch-wearing. So how do you do this, why might you do this, and is the data really just as accurate? Heres what you need to know.How to wear your Apple Watch on your ankleLets get the how out of the way first. If you have small feet (and ankles), you can just slip your regular wristband onto your ankle. I find that with a sport loop (the velcro band) I can fully loosen it, and just barely manage to slide it over my foot.Whats easier, though, is detaching one end of the wristband from the watch. Wrap it around your ankle, and then fasten the band. You still need a bit of length on the band to be able to close the velcro, but this works for me (and is a lot easier than taking my shoe off).All that said, there is an even simpler way: Buy yourself an extra-long strap that can easily fit your ankle. (You can also wear it on your bicep, if you prefer.) (or doesnt that look like an ankle monitor? which, no, it doesnt) and those who go of course, because they either do it themselves or immediately see the utility. These are some of the most common reasons:To count steps while your hands arent moving, for example if you walk on a treadmill while you work or get in most of your steps while pushing a stroller or cart.To keep your watch out of the way during activities like boxing (where you might wear wraps or gloves) or kettlebell workouts (where the weight often rests against your wrist).To comply with rules about not wearing watches at workfor example, surgeons or factory workers who need to keep their wrists unadorned.Sure, you could solve some of these problems with a different device like a Whoop, but why pay the subscription fees when you could just get an ankle strap for the smartwatch you already have? For sports, Id argue its best to use a chest strap to monitor your heart rate, but Im not the smartwatch police. You do what you like.How well does the Apple Watch count steps when worn on your ankle?To answer this question, I did some tests. I walked on a treadmill for three minutes per test, at 3.0 miles per hour (a normal walking pace). I had an Apple Watch Series 10 on either my left wrist or left ankle, and for comparison a Garmin Forerunner 265S on my right, paired to a chest strap.I counted steps the old fashioned way (one, two, three) and learned that I typically take 105-110 steps per minute at this pace. Heres what I got from my devices:Walking normally, hands swinging at my sides: 320 steps on Apple Watch, 322 on GarminWalking with my hands resting on the treadmill handlebar in front of me: 318 steps on Apple Watch, 0(!) on GarminApple Watch on the inside of my ankle: 326 steps on Apple Watch, 326 on Garmin (note: this position on my ankle was pretty uncomfortable.)Apple Watch on the outside of my ankle: 315 steps on Apple Watch, 308 on GarminThe Apple Watch got nearly the same step count for all of the tests, wrist and ankle, which surprised me. I was equally surprised that the Garmin counted none for the test where my hands were resting on the handlebar.While this is the result I got with a nice new Series 10 Apple Watch, its possible that older models and other brands of watch may not pick up steps as well while your hands arent moving, or that it may depend on exactly what youre doingtyping versus just resting, for example.How accurate is the Apple Watch for heart rate when worn on your ankle? It seems to be hard for the sensor to get a good contact with skin when worn on a body part as lumpy and mobile as an ankle. Ive noticed this anecdotallyit was an issue during those kettlebell workouts I did before I got a chest strapso I thought Id test it here as well.And I did, indeed, find that the ankle-mounted watch didnt capture an accurate heart rate. My tests were too short to be very conclusive, but on my wrist, my heart rate from the watch varied in a normal-looking pattern, more or less keeping pace with the chest strap. On the ankle, I tended to get a flat reading, seemingly without any consistent relationship with the chest strap. I wouldnt recommend relying on the heart rate data from an ankle-worn Apple Watch, although to be honest anyone who cares about accuracy should just get a chest strap already. A $25 Coospo will do the job just fine.

Now, a new report from YouTube claims TV has overtaken mobile to become the primary device for viewing content in the US.Yes, despite the tremendous push to smart phones, TVs, with their big screens and chunky remotes are still relevant. YouTube looks at watch time to determine device positions.Nielsen, a market research company that's been reporting on TV viewing habits for decades, says that YouTube has been the number one service in streaming watch time for the last two years.YouTube has also announced that its working on a new feature called Watch With. This tool should allow creators to produce live commentary and reactions to any games and events. Of course, many creators already do something like this, but the new tool could be more integrated into the platform.     Eric Council Jr. from Alabama has pleaded guilty to being a co-conspirator in the unauthorized takeover of the US Securities and Exchange Commission's Twitter account last year. In early January 2024, SEC's official X account tweeted that bitcoin ETFs had been approved "for listing on all registered national securities exchanges," but SEC Chair Gary Gensler quickly announced that the agency's account was compromised. The commission later revealed that it was the victim of a SIM swapping attack, though it also admitted that it account wasn't protected by multi-factor authentication. Council was the one who carried out the SIM swap, according to the Department of Justice.Council used an ID card printer to create a fake ID that he then used to gain access to a phone number associated with the SEC's account. In a SIM swap, the perpetrator typically gets a user's carrier to reassign a phone number to a new SIM card that they control. His co-conspirators, who paid Council in bitcoin, then changed the SEC account's password to control it before posting the false news along with a fake quote from Gensler. As for why the SEC's account was protected by MFA, the agency previously said that it asked X's support staff to disable it last July, because it was having issues with account access. But it remained disabled until after the account was compromised.Council, who was arrested in October, has pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and access device fraud. He will be sentenced on May 16 and could face up to five years in prison.
