  • South of Midnights unique world backdrops solid character action
    www.polygon.com
We already know that developer Compulsion Games has the chops to create an intriguing, aesthetically unique video game world after Contrast and We Happy Few. But the Microsoft-owned studios newest work, South of Midnight, has more than just the visual goods it plays great, too. Its magical Deep South world is truly fun to explore and to fight evil in.South of Midnight also has something many games lack: an adorable, weird little guy companion who I wish could accompany me in real life. In South of Midnight, that lil guy is Crouton, a magical ragdoll who brings cuteness and added gameplay depth to the adventure.A goofball like Crouton is total bait for a player like me. But Compulsion doesnt seem content to coast on South of Midnights quirky characters and bold, stop-motion animation-inspired looks. During a hands-on session, the studio sold me with the games combat; its winding, secret-filled world; and its strong writing.South of Midnight is a third-person action-adventure game bound for Xbox Series X and Windows PC this April. Players take control of Hazel, a young woman whose hometown of Prospero has been struck by a hurricane. In the aftermath of that disaster, Prospero is forever changed, and Hazel is called upon to become a Weaver, a magic user with a diverse set of talents. Using magical strands, Hazel casts spells to battle evil creatures, summon structures to climb on and jump off of, break through obstacles, and propel herself through the air. She can even magically run across walls, Titanfall pilot-style, as she traverses this broken, Southern Gothic world. The magic of South of Midnight extends beyond Hazel. Shell see the spirits of her ancestors and talk to legendary creatures like a giant, friendly catfish during the course of the game. The conversations that unfold with these other characters and Hazels internal dialogue appear to be the primary storytelling vectors here.In a section of the game I played during a recent press event for South of Midnight, Hazels combat and movement abilities seemed still fresh to her, based on her own reactions to them. She could weave strands to pull and push away enemies, or briefly stun them. As I found a collectible resource she called Floofs Hazel names many of the strange new things she encounters in this unfamiliar world I could power up her abilities. Upgrading Hazels spell-weaving powers lets her deflect projectiles, harvest health from enemies, and inflict greater damage on stunned bad guys.South of Midnight game director Jasmin Roy explained that the combat was designed to evolve and intensify over the course of the game. Many of Hazels primary attacks are performed with a single button, but managing her and her enemies positions, performing perfect dodges, and contending with ability-cooldown timers all ensures that battles wont be overly simplistic. That said, South of Midnight will include a variety of difficulty settings; should the combat prove too difficult, you can skip it outright or opt for a less challenging mode that focuses more on story and exploration.Moving around the swamps and derelict villages of South of Midnights Southern world is certainly fun, too. Like any good video game character, Hazel gains the ability to double jump, glide, climb, and wall run through the world. Compulsions designers have tucked away all kinds of secrets and well-hidden Floof material throughout the world. Exploring every nook and cranny was quite compelling. Even during my limited hands-on time, I obsessively tried to chase down every bit of Floof I could find. Then theres Crouton. While I didnt advance far enough into the game to play with him myself, Hazel eventually gets the ability to summon Crouton, who can be used in battle and in exploration. In combat situations, Crouton can possess an enemy (which the game calls Haints) and have it fight on Hazels side. Given his tiny size, Crouton can also reach areas that Hazel cant. The developer showed footage of Hazels ragdoll buddy exploring the tunnels of a fox den, where secrets and collectibles may await, while she remained outside. While the movement and combat feel evocative of other games (e.g., Devil May Cry, Metroid Prime, Titanfall), the Southern Gothic meets dark folktale that Compulsion says its aiming for with South of Midnight feels unique in big-budget games. Art director Whitney Clayton said the studio was inspired by some developers Southern upbringing, as well as existing works from books and film The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, Pans Labyrinth, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, to name a few.Clayton said the team utilized themes of a decaying America, eccentric rural characters, Southern storytelling traditions, and the Souths complex history as inspiration, wrapping it all in Compulsions use of exaggerated stylism. Even the games animation is exaggerated the characters move with a stop-motion-like judder. (Dont worry: You can turn that stylistic choice off, developers said.)But at the heart of South of Midnight is a simple, relatable tale. Writer and narrative director Zaire Lanier described it as a very human story about a mother and daughter. The game deals with some heavy subjects, but we want it to feel empathetic, Lanier told me. She said the studio also wants players to feel a connection to Hazel, who is written as a kind, sympathetic person who experiences the classic heros journey over the games 10- to 12-hour linear narrative.South of Midnight certainly has the vibes down. As someone who was raised in and explored the South for many years, I found myself caught up in the games swampy atmosphere, thick with kudzu and Spanish moss. The games audio is spot on; the constant drone of frogs and cicadas transported me back to a time and place that felt authentic. That was kind of a surprise, given that Compulsion is headquartered in Montreal. This is all to say that it appears that South of Midnights developers have put in the work, and Im excited to see and play more of Hazels story this spring.South of Midnight will be released April 8 on Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

  • How to ignore people on Discord
    www.polygon.com
Discord added an ignore button that allows you to block people without their knowledge on Monday. Discord already had features like mute and block, allowing you to tailor who messages you and when you get server pings. The ignore feature works a little bit differently from these two controls. The rest of this post will explain how the Discord ignore button works and how to use it.How Discords ignore button works The ignore feature on Discord is a way to soft-block someone. Unlike the block feature, ignoring another user wont remove them from your friends list. When you ignore someone on Discord, the person wont be notified and they can still see your profile and your account activity. However, ignoring someone will hide any messages and notifications from the user. (This applies to messages in servers, personal DMs, and group chats.)Instead of showing you messages from that person, Discord will gray-out their profile and tell you the number of messages hidden from the ignored person. If youd like, you can view these messages at a later time by clicking the unread messages hidden by the feature. Overall, think of the ignore button as another tool to help you control whose messages you see.How to ignore someone on DiscordTo ignore someone on Discord, right-click a user, and select Ignore on the small pop-up menu. Discord will pull up a window explaining what the feature does and from there, you can click Ignore again. If you ever want to unignore someone, you can do so by following the same steps. Just right-click and select, Unignore. It takes a few seconds and is completely reversible either way.

  • How an Ancient Clam Inspired A.A. Murakamis Generative Textile Art
    design-milk.com
Nature and technology are often perceived as polar opposites one evolving slowly over millions of years, the other advancing at lightning speed. Only at the hands of visionary artist duo A.A. Murakami could these two worlds converge in a way few others could imagine. Their latest project, A Thousand Layers of Stomach, transforms the beauty of an ancient clam into a groundbreaking generative textile artwork. Debuted during Art Blocks Weekend in Marfa, Texas, the installation explores how generative design can draw from the natural world, bridging the gap between evolution and innovation. At the heart of A Thousand Layers of Stomach is the Asari clam, a species with intricate shell patterns that holds centuries of history and, for A.A. Murakmi, endless fascination. When you pull one from a cloudy miso soup, its like a little surprise every time, shares Alexander Groves, co-founder of A.A. Murakami. Its physiological process involves filtering seawater for calcium, which is transformed into calcium carbonate to form its shell. Each line represents a year of the clams life, a phenomenon that has led to remarkable discoveries, like the Ming clam, thought to have lived during the Ming dynasty. These shells are surprisingly analogous to modern technological advances, with the clams printing nozzle acting as a biological 3D printer. Inspired by this process, A.A. Murakmi developed a generative code that powers a customized knitting machine a technological clam that prints out hundreds of lines of textile, much like a mollusk builds its shell pattern. What makes A.A. Murakamis work even more unique is what they coined as ephemeral tech, a departure from typical digital interfaces like screens or projects. To delve deeper into this process and the themes behind A Thousand Layers of Stomach (including where it got its name), TRAME Paris the collaborative studio and curated gallery presenting this work caught up with A.A. Murakami co-founder, Alex Groves, for an exclusive interview. In this conversation, he shares insights into their innovative approach to ephemeral tech, the fascinating biology of the Asari clam, and how this project bridges nature, technology, and design. Read on to explore the thought process and ingenuity that brought this unique generative art to life:What about the Asari clams biology inspired the project? This incredible organism, which evolved over 500 million years ago, became a profound source of awe for us. We studied scientific algorithms to mimic these patterns and landed on cellular automata, developed in the 1950s. While its great for generating patterns from simple rules, it didnt quite capture the organic intricacy of clam shells. So, we worked with a programmer to refine it, incorporating the unique characteristics of the Asari clam and how environmental factors shape its patterns. How does this project fit into your larger body of work? Its part of what we call ephemeral tech technology that goes beyond the usual digital interfaces like screens or projections. Instead, it manifests in physical forms that interact with the tangible world. Weve worked with fleeting states of matter, like bubbles, fog, and plasma, to create these experiences. While theres a lot of underlying technology, where you meet it is very physical and immediate. The generative code weve developed for this project is similar. Its like the intangible code in a clams DNA that manifests physically in its shell patterns. The title, A Thousand Layers of Stomach, actually came from a translation of a tripe dish on a Chinese menu. It stuck with us because it felt both earthy, grounded and at the same time sublime a perfect metaphor for this project. Why did you choose a knitting machine for this project?A knitting machine mirrors the clams process of creating patterns line by line. Its also lightweight, portable, and quick compared to larger tapestry machines, which is ideal since the project will tour globally. After starting in Marfa with TRAME at Art Blocks Marfa Weekend, it will travel to Hong Kong, London, Germany, and beyond. We envision multiple machines working like an autonomous bed of clams, each generating unique patterns that will never repeat. What role does the environment play in your work?We filmed part of the project on the Pearl River Delta in Hong Kong, a tidal estuary between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Its an extraordinary contrast two cutting-edge metropolises flanking a primordial landscape of tidal flats, sea life, and migratory birds. This juxtaposition between the urban and the natural is something were deeply interested in.How does A Thousand Layers of Stomach connect to your broader themes? The project is part of Happy Seafood Restaurant, a larger body of work exploring the earthy and transcendental elements of Hong Kong seafood restaurants. We extrapolate elements like neon signs and bubbling fish tanks into immersive installations rooms filled with plasma light waves or giant fog bubbles. The generative shell patterns are another layer of this exploration, reflecting the beauty of humble materials and their connection to cosmic awe. What excites you most about launching this project in Marfa?Showing this sea-inspired project in a desert landscape thousands of meters above sea level is surreal and perfect. It highlights the contrast between the wet, tidal origins of the clams and the parched environment of Marfa. The installation is interactive, allowing visitors to manipulate generative patterns in real-time, much like the dynamic, evolving patterns on a clams shell. As the project tours, it will grow into a massive textile, with the immersive installations evolving around it. Were continuing to push the boundaries of ephemeral tech, creating systems that reflect lifes ability to generate complexity against the backdrop of entropy. For us, this project is a celebration of nature, technology, and the hidden beauty in the everyday.Alexander Groves, co-founder of A.A. • Supernotes New E Ink Tablet Is Built for Distraction-Free Note Taking
    design-milk.com
Supernote has become a fan favorite for those who like the idea of digital files and notes for the sake of convenience but still want to be able to write in a way that feels natural and tactile. Now, the company is back with a new iteration of its tablet in the form of the Supernote A5 X2 Manta E Ink tablet. Its easy to see the appeal of a device like this. E Ink may not allow images to look quite as impressive as a traditional tablet, but E Ink displays look a whole lot more like real pen and paper, not only helping make things feel a little more natural but also being easier on the eyes. This particular E Ink tablet has a 10.7-inch display with 300 pixels per inch, which help make images look crisp and detailed. It has 32GB of storage, but theres a microSD card slot that can add an additional 2TB, which should be more than enough for the vast majority of users.Of course, so far, all these features are pretty standard for E Ink tablets, including those made by the likes of Remarkable and Amazon. What sets the Supernote A5 X2 Manta apart, however, is its repairability. The device has a panel on its back that can be removed easily, giving you access to internal components like the battery and motherboard. The battery itself can be replaced once it starts losing charge, and access to the other components means that its entirely possible youll be able to buy upgrades for it that dont require replacing the entire device. The overall design of the Supernote A5 X2 Manta is relatively sleek, with an all-white exterior and a leather loop on the side to hold your stylus. Theres a folio cover available for the device at an additional cost. Its not the most unique-looking tablet out there, but its all-white and minimalistic design might well help make for a more distraction-free writing experience. The only downside is that youll have to pay for the repairability. The device costs $459, which is a little more than some competitors. Not only that, it doesnt come with a stylus. The idea there is that youll supply your own if you already have one, but if you dont, youll have to pay extra to get one. Thankfully, Supernote sells a number of different styluses, so you can buy one at the same time for convenience. If you dont mind paying that cash and supplying a stylus, then youll likely love whats on offer from the Supernote A5 X2 Manta. The device is powered by a custom version of Android that supports touch gestures and offline handwriting recognition. This feature allows your notes to be converted into digital text for editing later. It has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built-in and can sync notes through popular cloud services, including Dropbox and Google Drive. Theres even an accompanying app for smartphones, to which notes can be transferred directly. The Supernote A5 X2 Manta can be purchased from supernote.com.

  • Here's How to Access Your Router's Hidden Parental Controls
    lifehacker.com
As my boys become older, they become savvier at working their way around the parental controls on our devices. Time limits are tampered with, and apps I thought were deleted from our iPad suddenly reappear. I know they're not accessing dangerous content, but it's only a matter of time until they do.Most routers have parental controls included, allowing concerned parents to put controls over all the devices that rely on wifi to ensure they don't go to dangerous sites. If you're looking for a way to control what your family can access on the internet and how long, below are instructions for the three of the most popular router brands. How to set up parental controls on a TP-Link routerTP-Link has slightly different steps depending on your particular router type. The following applies to a wide range of their routers, but if you have a newer router, particularly an Archer model, you may need to follow these steps instead, or try the app.Start by logging into the router's configuration page by entering your web browser and typing in the IP address (192.168.1.1or192.168.0.1) or http://tplinkwifi.netin the address bar. When prompted, enter the router's username and password. The default for both is admin.A menu will appear on the left side of the screen. Click on Parental Controls, then choose Enable to turn on the setting. You'll need to type in the 12-digit MAC address of your primary home device. See steps five (Mac) and six (PC) for locating your device's MAC address. To find the MAC address on an Apple device, go to System Settings, then Network, then Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then Advanced. For a Windows computer, open the command prompt, typeipconfig /all, then scroll down to your network adapter and look for the physical address.Click Add New to create a rule that will affect what websites and domains you want to allow and when.Press Time settings, highlighted in red on the top right corner, to set the router time. Then click Save and return to the previous page.On the bottom right corner, click Schedule, highlighted in red, to control when your children can surf the web. Afterward, click Save and return to the previous page. From here, you'll need to enter the MAC address of your child's device (refer to steps five and six), then enter the sites you'll allow them to visit. Choose the scheduled time you set up in step nine. Check Enable to make the setting take effect, then click Save. You'll return to the Parental Control page and see a list of settings you've created. How to set up parental controls on a NETGEAR routerA NETGEAR router has two tiers of parental controls. The paid tier, Smart Parental Controls Premium, allows you to set daily bedtimes, filter content, view browsing history, restrict websites, and more across multiple devices. There is a 30-day free trial; plans range between $7.99 a month and $69.99 a year. You must download and launch the Orbi or Nighthawk app to get started.Press the Parental Controls tile, then Add New Profile > Set Up. You can set up a profile for each child in your household.Type the name of the child for whom you want to set up the profile and tap Continue. A list of devices connected to your router, both online and offline, will appear.Choose which devices the child you are setting up the profile for can use to go online. You won't have to enter any payment information. How to set up parental controls on an ASUS routerLike NETGEAR routers, ASUS offers two tiers of parental controls: AiProtection Classic and AiProtection Pro. Both tiers are free for the life of the router, but the protection tier varies depending on the ASUS router model you purchase. Generally, routers on the lower price points come with the Classic tier, and since each tier is designed for the specific model you've bought, you can't upgrade to Pro.You must update the router's firmware and download the ASUS Router App to your smartphone.Once in the ASUS Router app, you want to go to Settings, then Family. Here, you can create a profile for each family member. Start by choosing the appropriate level of protection.Write the name of your family member's name and click Next.Select the name of the device you are protecting and click Next. You'll be asked to select Setup Offline Schedule (setup schedule when the internet is off) or Setup Online Schedule (setup schedule when the internet is on). Select one, create your schedule, and click Next. You'll then be asked to select which content to block, such as pornography or video streaming. Choose what you'd want to restrict and allow, and click Apply in the top right corner. The parental controls should do the rest.ASUS also offers a Reward Time feature, which allows you to give your kid extra screen time for good behavior. You'll see the feature when their profile is set up on the ASUS Router app.

  • You Can Quietly Mute People on Discord Now
    lifehacker.com
There are times when blocking someone on Discord just seems downright harsh. Plus, when you block someone, they'll know that you've done so, which might lead to unwanted drama. Perhaps you simply want to ignore that they exist. You can go on with your merry life, and they can do their own thing. No hard feelings. Well, Discord has now added a feature appropriately called Ignore, so you can do just that. What does it mean to Ignore someone on Discord?Ignore is basically a mute feature. It lets you mute someone who's annoying or downright abusive. All without the added drama that comes with outright blocking someone. You can even use it to take a temporary break from someone, since they won't know when you've ignored them. Ignored users will still be able to see your profile, and they can still send you messages, it's just that you'll remain blissfully unaware of these interactions unless you choose to peak at them. When an ignored user send a message in group chats, DMs, or anywhere across the server, their messages will be hidden by default, but you'll have an option to view them using the Show button. You also won't get notifications about their activity. And when you visit the profile of someone you've ignored, you'll see a full-screen page reminding you that you're supposed to be ignoring this person. But, of course, you can view their profile if you must. The Ignore feature carries on to voice chat as well. You'll receive a warning telling you when you're about to join a voice chat with an ignored user. Here, too, you can ignore the warning if you'd like, but you will be able to hear the ignored userthere's no mute function in voice calls. How to Ignore a user in DiscordThere are two main ways you can Ignore a user. You can do so from the person's profile, or right from your Direct Messages if you've already got a conversation going with them.Visit their profile, or click their name in a group chat, then click the three-dotted Menu icon, and click the Ignore button. Credit: Khamosh Pathak From the popup, click the Ignore button to confirm. Credit: Khamosh Pathak To do this from a Direct Message with the user you want to ignore, right-click on the profile name and choose the Ignore option. At first, you'll still see their name in your Direct Messages list, though. Right-click and choose the Close DM feature to remove them from the list. You can always access their DMs or profile again but going to the Friends > All section. You can also easily reverse ignoring someone. Go back to their profile and click the Unignore button next to the You ignored them notice.

  • Sonys next State of Play event is set for February 12 at 5PM ET
    www.engadget.com
Its happening again. Sony just scheduled a State of Play livestream event for February 12. The stream starts at 5PM ET and should run for around 40 minutes. You can watch it on the PlayStation website, Twitch or via the official YouTube page. What will be revealed? We dont exactly know. We do, however, have some educated guesses. Its likely well get new trailers and information regarding hotly-anticipated titles like Marvels Wolverine and Death Stranding 2. Hideo Kojimas upcoming sequel should come out this year, so its high time for another beefy trailer.Sucker Punchs Ghost of Yotei already has a 2025 release window, so we could get an actual date on that one. Maybe well even get a fresh look at gameplay. Bungies PvP extraction shooter Marathon could get a trailer and a beta release date, which would be pretty cool. Naughty Dog also recently announced a brand-new IP called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. I wouldnt mind some more info on that one. Finally, theres the Xbox of it all. We know that the former Xbox exclusive Forza Horizon 5 is coming to PS5 this spring, so we could get a concrete release date. The same goes for the blisteringly fun Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Could we even get an announcement that the Halo franchise is finally coming to PlayStation? Maybe, as there have been rumors. What we wont see are the various live-service games that Sony has recently canned. Last month, Sony canceled two unannounced live-service titles that were in development at Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games. The Bluepoint game was reportedly a live-service God of War game, though Bend Studios title remains unknown. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/playstation/sonys-next-state-of-play-event-is-set-for-february-12-at-5pm-et-150934514.html?src=rss
