  • Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board Game Review
    www.ign.com
Video games used to thrive on their iterative feedback loops: a short run, from which youd learn new skills, then repeat to put those skills into practice and hopefully get a bit further. Its a powerfully addictive model that gave retro games a big part of their appeal and, while gaming has become bigger and better since, there are still games that leverage it effectively, such as Dead Cells. In theory, that iterative model should work just as well on tabletop, and now you can find out with this board game adaptation.Whats in the BoxDead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board GameSee it at AmazonDead Cells comes in a suitably coffin-heavy box which, once you slide off the lid, greets you with a series of instructions on how to organize the contents. This involves sorting through a tower of cards, putting them into different groups, and then using dividers to store them in the box for easy access to each group when you need it. In addition, theres a lot of cardboard tiles to punch and, again, sort into groups and place into provided compartments in the box. Its a great insert that makes setting up the game much easier, but it will absolutely need to be shelved horizontally: everything will tip out and mix with the box on its side. With that done, you can turn your attention to the rest of the contents. This mostly consists of a series of small boards. Theres no central game board here, rather a separate one for each environment youll have to traverse, plus a combat board and an annexe board which are used to organize the components youll be using during each game. Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite InfoPlayers: 1-4 (1 or 3 is preferable)Ages: 14+Play Time: 45 mins For between games theres the mutation board, a peculiar artefact covered in fixed polythene pockets to store cards permanently: youll fill some of these during the card organization step. Finally, there are boards for players to use to track the status of their characters, together with some reference sheets, tokens and a standee thats used to track the partys position. All the components are decent quality, and the comic-book style art is cohesive and fits the game very well, conjuring up the same look and feel as the original video game while still managing to appear distinctive. There are a few missteps in the text however, as the rules and player aids could be a lot clearer.Rules and How It PlaysEach player takes a character and their starting combat deck and then the team, represented by that single standee, ventures into the board for the first biome of the game, the Prisoners Quarters. This is a simple path of interlinked spaces, with a couple of decision points, and each space has a face-down tile hinting at what might be found there, such as treasure, or enemies. This is a cooperative board game, but one player is designated as the first player and they get to make decisions for the group while theyre wearing that crown. Certain spaces or actions change who is currently first player, and its a neat solution to the cooperative dilemma of having the most experienced or bossy participant order the group round. As you move into the space you resolve the encounter tile, allowing you to pick up that treasure, or fight enemies, although there are a few board features that vary the mix up a bit like merchants, where you can buy stuff, and skill checks, which let you gamble a card for a small bonus. Most spaces will see you facing off against foes drawn from a deck specific to the biome youre in. Each card marks that enemys health, starting position on the combat board, and actions over three rounds of combat, and a reward for defeating them. Players then choose cards, each of which shows what theyll do over each of those three rounds. You then run each of the rounds deterministically: hearts do damage and the aim is to try and knock out enemies before they can take damaging actions.Theres a lot more to combat than this. Some attacks can hit different positions on the board and, as well as damage, there are effects like bleed, fire and poison. Players also have skills different for each character they can employ, and equipment can add extra actions to the palette. This makes every single combat a fascinating tactical puzzle, based on the card you have. There is one peculiar wrinkle: to ensure exactly three player cards get used in each fight, two- and four-player sessions see someone doubling up or missing out, which makes Dead Cells: The Rogue-Like Board Game feel like its really a one- or three-player game, no matter what it says on the box.Fighting is also remorselessly lethal. The Prisoners Quarters features enemies that can easily put out 2-3 hearts of damage in a single combat, youll face two or three of them at a time, and each character starts with 3 life. If a single player dies, its game over. In all likelihood, you wont even make it half way through the Quarters on your first play. At which point, the reason you spent all that time sorting cards in the box begins to become apparent.During play youll collect various rewards, such as gold teeth you can spend at merchants, equipment and so on. But youll lose these at the end of each run. A far more valuable currency is dead cells, because these can be spent at the conclusion of a session to buy new stuff thats permanent. It might be some upgraded combat cards, the chance to start play with a random piece of equipment, or even a one-off shot that kills an enemy, but each gives you an incrementally higher chance of surviving for another space, potentially earning more cells, and eventually getting you to the exit door that leads to the next board, the Toxic Sewers.Dead Cells: The Rogue-Like Board Game feels like its really a one- or three-player game, no matter what it says on the box.Once youve made that goal, another card type you can collect as a reward, blueprints, come into play. These are upgraded equipment options that you can shuffle into your equipment deck if you finish a run with them. Again, incremental improvements lead to longer survival and the chance for more goodies. While theres a great deal of gambling involved in whether you get good rewards or not, some do offer the chance for strategic fine-tuning, such as the choice of which inferior starting equipment cards to permanently can, or which character is best-suited to a particular upgrade.Again, like combat, theres a whole lot more to this system, including the collection of runes that act as prerequisites for more abilities. You store it all on the cleverly designed inter-biome board which has poly pockets in which to keep permanent upgrades, making it relatively easy to tear the game down and set it up again. And thats fortunate, because the problem with Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board Game is that its a board game, not a video game. On screen, the feedback loop for putting those tiny iterative advancements into play takes five minutes. On the table, while the rules replicate that feeling magnificently well, it takes twenty minutes to half an hour. This might be okay if you got more stuff on each run, or if you had more control over your fate. But the initial gains are frustratingly small and its quite common to draw a selection of enemies that will end your run despite your best efforts, just because you dont have the required cards to deal with them. Eventually, once you make it through the Toxic Sewers, theres a boss to fight which adds some new challenges and excitement but it can easily take 10 plays, several hours of table time, before you get that far, and each of those 10 plays you have to run through the Quarters and the Sewers, seeing encounters youve already seen. It doesnt take that long before even the enjoyable combat system starts to lose its shine. As you get further into the campaign you start to ignore the earlier boards so the issue doesnt get incrementally worse, but theres still an awful lot of repetition. Its enlivened by new encounters and equipment, the constant trickle of new and better gear and skills to incorporate into your games and even some secret envelopes to open if you get far enough, yet the sense of deja vu each time you open up a familiar biome board is palpable.Where to BuyMore Board Games Inspired by Video Games: You can also check out our list of the best board games based on video games for more recommendations. • These iPadOS features are why I love working from an iPad
    9to5mac.com
Working from an M4 iPad Pro has its shortcomings, but it also comes with a lot of strengths. Here are some key iPadOS features that have made full-time iPad productivity serve me so well.#1: iPadOS Home ScreenThe iPads Home Screen has long moved past being just a hub for apps.Ever since iPadOS 13 in 2019, the Home Screen has been a versatile dashboard thanks to the addition of widgets. Not long after, those widgets became even more powerful with resizing tools and freeform placement. Today, you can also modify the look of app icons, place objects anywhere on screen, and more.I love filling my iPad Home Screen with exactly the right tools for me: apps I launch often, widgets of varying sizes that provide important data, shortcuts from Apples Shortcuts app, all together in a central hub. This used to be a big advantage of the iPad over the Mac, but fortunately macOS not long ago enabled desktop widgets too. I still prefer iPadOSs greater versatility and customization tools. Also, I love just swiping up from the bottom of the screen to go Home.#2: One app by defaultI understand this can be a negative for some who prefer the Mac. But I absolutely love the iPads one-app-at-a-time design. In iPadOS, opening an app by default fills the whole screen. You work in a single app at a time, and see nothing else. This feature has been a big part of why Ive spent the last 10 years working from an iPad.The mental focus and clarity provided by the iPads app model is something that gets completely lost when I use a Mac. Having various resizable windows filling the screen, or even just the desktop in the background, ruins my ability to focus.#3: Slide Over multitaskingAs much as I prefer keeping one app on screen at a time, the feature only works so well because I also use Slide Over frequently.Slide Over allows me to quickly bring a compact app into view from the edge of the iPads display. Its essentially a mini-iPhone app window that can sit above the main iPad app.Like the iPhones app switcher, Slide Over also lets you quickly switch between a stack of multiple apps, which has made it one of my most prized iPadOS features. Most of my day I have Safari, Ulysses, or NetNewsWire on screen as my main iPad app. Then in Slide Over, Ill bounce between Slack, Messages, Files, Photos, and Reminders. Thanks to Slide Over I can quickly pull another app in as needed without replacing my main workspace, then push it off to the side when I dont need it.iPadOS features for getting things done: wrap-upiPadOS isnt the best platform for everyone to get work done, but its been my go-to for a long time. If youre weighing replacing your laptop with an M4 iPad Pro, I go into more details about why that works for me here. What are your favorite iPadOS features for getting things done? • Government Releases Audio of Implosion of Titanic Sub
    futurism.com
Over a year and a half after the fateful implosion of OceanGate's doomed Titan submersible, officials are still combing through the evidence, and trickling it out for the public to see and hear. Now, the National National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released an audio recording taken roughly 900 miles from the Titan's implosion site by a "moored passive acoustic recorder"device.According to the agency, the 23-second clip contains the "suspected acoustic signature of the Titan submersible implosion."An ominous roaring sound can be heard roughly halfway through the recording, seemingly the result of a massive carbon fiber hull collapsing under the pressure of anywhere between 375 and 400 atmospheres around 12,500 feet below the Atlantic Ocean. The incident, which likely took place "within a fraction of a millisecond," is believed to have instantly killed all five people on board, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. It's yet another terrifying reminder of the sheer physical forces at work and Rush's well-documented hubris, which allowed the disaster to happen.Coast Guard officials have previously released haunting footage of the remains of the doomed submersible's hull, including clips of the imploded crew compartment.Apart from creating a noise that could be picked up from 900 miles away, the Titan's hull had already made ominous sounds long before embarking on its doomed mission to visit the wreck of the Titanic.During his testimony at a Marine Board of Investigation panel last year, diving expedition company owner Karl Stanley recalled "unnerving" cracking noises during an April 2019 Titan expedition off the coast of the Bahamas."I remember I was the one that was able to isolate the area where it was coming from and told them, 'this, this is the area,' and was listening right there," Stanley testified at the time.Plenty of incriminating details have come to light since the disaster, from shoddy workmanship to a bafflingly basic navigation system. Both NASA and Boeing have also attempted to distance themselves from the disaster, though Rush had made much of OceanGate's supposed connections to them.Unsurprisingly, OceanGate announced just weeks after the implosion that it had suspended "all exploration and commercial operations." But one of its cofounders, Guillermo Shnlein, already has far more ambitious plans in the works. He wants to create a colony that floats above the surface of Venus, the Solar System's hottest planet.Ohio real estate billionaire Larry Connor also toldThe Wall Street Journal in May that he's planning to visit the wreck of the Titanic himself, seemingly undeterred by the OceanGate disaster."I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way," Connor told the newspaper at the time.More on the implosion: NASA Insists It Didnt Do Much Work on the Titanic Sub That Imploded, Killing Its CrewShare This Article

  • Elon Claimed DOGE.gov Was Filled With Information About His Accomplishments, When In Reality It Was Completely Blank
    futurism.com
Guess we'll take his word for it.404 ErrorElon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is off to a strange start. Hoping to clear the air yesterday, Musk responded to criticism of DOGE head-on in a bizarre and uncomfortable press conference.Flanked by president Donald Trump and his four-year old son, a stammering Musk defended himself from the charge that he could benefit immensely from his unelected position, gutting agencies thatare directly in charge of investigating and regulating his billion-dollar business ventures. When asked what mechanisms were in place to guarantee accountability and transparency as DOGE ransacks the federal government, Musk replied that "we post our actions to the DOGE handle on X, and on the DOGE website" clearly referring to the official government URL, DOGE.gov.There's just one problem: the DOGE website had been blank for weeks at that point. When it first launched, it was a single splash page containing an AI-mangled American flag anda simple message proclaiming that "the people voted for major reform,"but it was subsequently scrubbed even of the flag graphic. This afternoon, after many observers pointed out that Musk had publicly promoted a blank webpage, the site was updated with ten blog posts backdated as far as February 7. Most are simple and declarative, like one that claims with no citation or evidence that the "NIH team" had saved "$4B annually in excessive grant administrative costs."Nor is there any useful information on Musk's wasteful and fraudulent spending crusade on DOGE's sister website, waste.gov,which was pulled down today after people noticed it was a lorem-ipsum-style blank WordPress template. It goes without saying that there are massive gaps in the accountability chain that would be true even if these two sites were bursting with content. Despite Musk making unsubstantiated claims of rampant fraud, neither he nor the broader Trump administration have produced any evidence. The closest we've gotten to verified proof came at a press conference today, when Trump's press secretary Karoline Leavitt waved around printed screenshots of "contracts upon contracts" that she said went "against the President's policies" a suspicious phrasing that falls well short of constituting fraud. And while it's true that Musk's DOGE account posts loudly and often about cutting things like Department of Education training grants and the government's Politico subscription, these hardly constitute fraud either. That charge has so far been used as cover for Musk's ideological project rather than any substantial budget savings, especially as DOGE's spending skyrockets.Yesterday, the White House announced that Musk is employed as a "special government employee" meaning his own federal compensation won't be disclosed to the public. If the billionaire's personal conduct is any indication, the American people will probably remain in the dark on what's happening in their government for the foreseeable future.Share This Article

  • Captain America Series Hits New Low on Rotten Tomatoes
    screencrush.com
The newCaptain America movie might feature aBrave New World, but its a rotten one as well.Reviews for the latest Marvel film on the aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes have not been kind overall. As of this writing,Brave New World has earned a cumulative score of53 from108 different reviews from film critics. That makesBrave New World justthethird rotten movie in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe which contains 35 cinematic entries and counting following 2021sEternalsand 2023sAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In other words, all of the MCUs rotten films have been made in the last four years as good an indicator as any that the mega-franchise has hit a rough patch, at least creatively speaking. (From the time of the MCUs creation in 2008 until late 2021, every single movie produced by Marvel Studios earned a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score.)On Rotten Tomatoes, any movie with an average score below 60 is deemed rotten.CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLDMarvelloading...The previous films in theCaptain America film series The First Avenger,The Winter Soldier, andCivil War received Rotten Tomatoes scores of 80, 90, and 90 respectively, meaning the new film is by far the most poorly-reviewed in the long-running franchise.Brave New World stars Anthony Mackie in his first outing as the MCUs new Captain America, following Chris Evans retirement from the role after 2019sAvengers: Endgame. Here is howBrave New World stacks up with the other lowest-rated MCU movies to date:AsBrave New World doesnt open in theaters for a few days, and more reviews will be published through the weekend, this number could fluctuate a little moving forward. But generally blockbusters get their highest Rotten Tomatoes scores from their first wave of early reviews, with the later articles from more general film critics often harsher and less enthusiastic.Eternals, for example, initiallyreceived a Rotten Tomatoes score of 63 already low for the MCU at the time until more negative reviews came in and pushed that number down into the 40s.So there is still time forBrave New Worlds score to go up and there is also the possibility that it could go down further. It could wind upbecoming the lowest-scoring MCU movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes. (The lowest-scoring TV show on Rotten Tomatoes, wasInhumans, which earned an 11. I think that record is still safe for now.)Captain America: Brave New World premieres in theatersthis weekend.Get our free mobile appThe Best Marvel Movies Not Made By Marvel Studios
