When it comes to macro photography, light can either elevate your shot to a work of art or bury intricate details in shadows. Whether youre photographing insects, flowers, or small objects, understanding how to use light effectively is key to achieving sharp, expressive, and visually compelling images.Natural vs Artificial Light in Macro PhotographyNatural light is often the first choice for outdoor macro photographers. Early morning and late afternoon offer soft, golden light that brings out textures and reduces harsh shadows. However, natural light is unpredictable, and you may encounter overcast skies or midday harshness. On the other hand, artificial lighting such as ring flashes, LED panels, or speedlights gives you full control. These tools allow you to shape, direct, and modify light for consistent results regardless of the environment.Tip: Try combining both natural and artificial light. Use natural light as the base and a reflector or soft flash to fill in unwanted shadows.Key Lighting Techniques for Macro SuccessDiffuse Your Light: Whether natural or artificial, harsh light can blow out details. Use a diffuser like a translucent umbrella, softbox, or even a piece of white cloth to soften the illumination.Side Lighting: Positioning your light source to the side can reveal textures and give your subject a more three-dimensional feel.Backlighting: Great for translucent subjects like petals or wings. Backlighting creates a glow and adds mood, but may require exposure compensation.Use Reflectors: Bouncing light back onto the subject can help fill shadows and add a touch of warmth, especially in cool light conditions.Controlling Shadows and HighlightsIn macro photography, shadows can become distracting if not controlled properly. Try these techniques:Adjust Angle and Distance: Move your light source or change your position to modify the shadow cast.Use Fill Light: A secondary light source or small LED panel can help fill in shadows without overpowering the main light.Manual Exposure Settings: Shoot in manual mode to control your highlights and preserve details in both dark and light areas.Practical Setup Tips for Macro LightingStabilize your gear Use a tripod to keep your composition steady when experimenting with light angles.Start with one light source Master it before adding more complexity.Use a diffuser or bounce card Even a folded piece of white paper can make a difference.Experiment and review Check your shots frequently, and dont be afraid to adjust.Light in Macro Photography as a Creative ToolLight tells a story. Harsh shadows can convey drama. Soft light can evoke intimacy. A splash of warm sunlight can introduce nostalgia, while cool tones may suggest tranquillity or mystery. Train your eye to see how light interacts with your subject, and youll unlock new dimensions in your macro photography.Extended reading:Getting Started with Macro PhotographyThe post Mastering Light in Macro Photography appeared first on 500px.

  • Amazing Before & After Hollywood VFX 2
    www.famefocus.com
According to Atomic Fictions VFX supervisor Ryan Tudhope, there wasnt a huge budget for making the first Deadpool movie so they had to get creative with the resources available. Like the music?Consider helping us out and downloading it on itunes, Google Play, Spotify and Amazon!Every decision mattered and they had to carefully choose where to add CGI and where to use practical effects. In the freeway sequence they replicated a huge stretch of the Georgia Viaduct in Vancouver, to mesh in with the real-life scenes at the end of the car-chase. Once all the CG shots were finished, it then took 8 weeks of straight rendering.Bryan Hirota, vfx supervisor for scanline vfx commented on how most of the heroes action shots were filmed without capes. In fact they treated Superman and Batmans capes as actual characters in post production, having them move almost as characteristically as the iconic super heroes. This was also very important for continuity between shots, where a real-life cape would move differently each take.During the production of gravity, Alfonso Cuarns team quickly ran into trouble. Zero gravity is already complicated to shoot, but floating in outer space is harder still. In order to have various actors weightlessly spinning and colliding with virtual objects they invented the Light Box. A rig with a moving camera, moving actor rig and 196 LED panels, to give the actors a point of reference and for light reflections. The logistics of having a boy and a large tiger on a small boat were technically impossible, so for obvious reasons Richard Parker was 100% CGI. However they did film a real tiger on some shots, especially one where he swims, which then set the benchmark for the CGI; for the real footage to not look out of place, the CG tiger had to be spot on.To play us out are some scenes from TV series Missing and Pan Am. So if you liked this breakdown give us a like and well seen you behind the next one.Breakdowns featured:Deadpool Atomic FictionBatman V Superman scanline vfxGravity FramestoreLife of Pi Rhythm & Hues StudiosThe post Amazing Before & After Hollywood VFX 2 appeared first on Fame Focus.

Photo credit: Jean-Christophe LemayThe International Garden Festival is launching a call for proposals to select designers to create the new temporary gardens for the festivals 27th edition.Created by Marie-Jose Lacroix, Denis Lemieux, Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec, and Alexander Reford at the turn of the new millennium, the International Garden Festival is recognized as one of the most important contemporary garden festivals in North America. The upcoming edition of the festival, which is set to open on June 20, 2026, will take place on the site of Les Jardins de Mtis Reford Gardens and the theme will be Mapping Sensitivity. In the midst of the triennial thematic cycle, which began a year ago, the upcoming theme aims to pursue an ongoing reflection on the poetics of space and how we relate to our physical surroundings and the world. While last editions theme, Borders, focused on the challenges of organizing and representing geographical space and raising geopolitical concerns, the theme of the 27th edition takes the sensitive turn.Mapping Sensitivity draws its inspiration from sensitive mapping, which is distinguished by its consideration of the subjective and immaterial dimensions of a place. It traces the shared representations of a space that is described, lived, and felt, and considers the real experience that users have of a given space as well as the emotional relationship they develop with it.For the 27th edition, the International Garden Festival is inviting designers from all backgrounds to design a garden using a sensitive, fundamentally inclusive, and relational approach. At once real and fantasized, this garden will take on its full meaning thanks to the users who frequent it, shaping it in turn. This call for proposals is open to all landscape architects, architects, visual artists, and multidisciplinary teams from Canada and abroad, and the festival encourages participants to form multidisciplinary teams. Applicants are limited to one proposal, either as individuals or as a team. Participants can be from a single city or country or can cross international boundaries.Hermine Demal + Stephen Zimmerer, Peek-a-Boo (detail), 2025. Photo credit: Martin BondDesigners are invited to design a garden that can take place in one of the axes of the festival. The artistic and technical committees of the festival in collaboration with the designers, will identify the site that will best showcase their project. Designers will be asked to imagine their garden for exhibition for at least two summers, and to propose strategies for the repurposing or recycling of the garden or its materials after the end of its exhibition. The deadline to submit proposals electronically isMonday, October 27, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EST. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. For more information or to submit a proposal, click here. The post 27th International Garden Festival issues call for proposals appeared first on Canadian Architect.

  • Ton Roosendaal to step down as Blender chairman and CEO
    www.cgchannel.com
html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"The keynote from this weeks Blender Conference, during which Ton Roosendaal the original creator of the open-source 3D software announced that he is standing down as Blender CEO.Ton Roosendaal is to step down as chairman of the Blender Foundation and Blender CEO on 1 January 2026. The news was announced during todays keynote at the Blender Conference.Roosendaal the original author of the open-source 3D software, and its public figurehead for the past three decades will pass on his roles to current Blender COO Francesco Siddi.Roosendaal himself will move to the newly established Blender Foundation supervisory board.Other new Blender Foundation board positions include Head of Development Sergey Sharybin, Head of Product Dalai Felinto, and Head of Operations Fiona Cohen.Ton Roosendaal in the early 1990s. Blender originated as in-house software at NeoGeo, the animation studio he co-founded.Blenders original creator and principal promoterBlender began life in the mid-1990s as in-house software at NeoGeo, the Dutch animation studio that Roosendaal co-founded, and for which he wrote the custom tools.Although initially set to become a commercial product, when investors decided to pull the plug on Not a Number, the firm he had founded to develop Blender, Roosendaal went open-source. A crowdfunding campaign quickly raised the 110,000 needed to buy back the code base, and on 13 October 2002, Blender was released to the world under a GPL licence. From the start, two things distinguished Blender from most other open-source CG applications.First, even before the first release, Roosendaal established the non-profit Blender Foundation, so development was run through an organization akin to a commercial software developer.Second, the software was tested in something close to real-world production conditions, on a series of open movies, beginning with 2006s Elephants Dream, and continuing to this day.The early open movies funded through a combination of DVD pre-sales and arts grants also provided valuable exposure for Blender, and illustrated Roosendaals gifts as a producer and promoter: a mixture of passion, physical presence, and sheer force of personality.Taking Blender from fan favorite to staple of professional productionBy the mid-2010s, Blender was quietly being adopted in major studios, with Pixar confirming that it was one of a small number of third-party 3D tools that it approved for use internally.A major turning point was the release of Blender 2.80: the 2019 update that addressed many of the UI and workflow issues that had previously alienated artists used to commercial 3D apps.It catalysed support for Blender among big tech firms, with a landmark $1.2 million grant from Epic Games followed by backing from companies including AMD, Intel, NVIDIA and Qualcomm.Last year, the Corporate Patrons of the Blender Development Fund accounted for just under 40% of the collective income of the Blender organizations. The resulting 3.1 million paid the salaries of over 15 full-time developers, plus a similar number of tech support staff and part-time devs: a larger team than many commercial CG tools.Roosendaal (right) introduces the new Blender leadership team: (L-R) incoming CEO Francesco Siddi, Sergey Sharybin, Dalai Felinto and Fiona Cohen. The public incarnation of BlenderDuring that time, the software has been closely identified with Roosendaal himself, both through his role as chairman of the Blender Foundation, and as a kind of totemic figurehead. When I interviewed him in 2019 for an article in a UK tech magazine, he described himself, quite accurately, as the incarnation of Blender. But in the same interview, he noted that Blender is much bigger than me and commented: Now I need to get the organisation working without me, and then I can move on.Six years later, those plans have finally come to fruition, with the appointment of a new Blender leadership team. From single figurehead to four core leadership rolesAnnouncing his departure at the Blender Conference, Roosendaal identified four of his key skills that he felt had led to Blenders success: as an organizer, developer, designer and entrepreneur. Its telling that rather than trying to appoint one person to fulfil all four roles, they have been split out to four separate people.Former animation producer Fiona Cohen takes on the organizational role, as the Blender Foundations new Head of Operations. The developer role will be taken by Blender Lead Engineer Sergey Sharybin in his new role as the Foundations Head of Development. The designer role passes to another long-time Blender artist and developer, Dalai Felinto, as the new Head of Product. The critical entrepreneurial role will be fulfilled by current Blender COO Francesco Siddi, who takes on Roosendaals job tiles of chairman and CEO.Siddi first began working with the Blender organization in 2012, as a VFX artist on the open movie Tears of Steel, later acting as a web developer and pipeline developer. He began working as a producer on subsequent open movies in 2017, and has managed Blenders industry relations since 2020.I am very proud to have such a wonderfully talented young team around me to bring our free and open source project into the next decade, commented Roosendaal.Read the official announcement that Ton Roosendaal is stepping down as Blender CEORead more about Blenders leadership structure in the latest Blender Foundation annual report
