As our lives adapt to include them in daily routines, architecture is following suit. From homes that consider how dogs actually see color to cafs where cats nap above your coffee, designers are rethinking spaces with animals in mind. These ten projects show how care, comfort and play can be built into the environments we share with our four-legged friends.Dog and Cat HotelBy Raulino Silva Arquitecto, Vila do Conde, Portugal This pet hotel rethinks animal care through architecture, offering dogs and cats a place to stay during their owners travels. Three interconnected buildings separate the cat and dog zones, keeping each environment calm and comfortable. Dogs have 41 shelters organized around a corridor garden that softens views and reduces stress, while cats enjoy 12 private rooms linked by a skylit play area. Beyond accommodation, the site includes outdoor training grounds, a veterinary office, grooming spaces and even a swimming pool for pets.Guide Dogs for the Blind New Student ResidenceBy Studio Bondy Architecture, San Rafael, California This new residence is part of a campus renewal for Guide Dogs for the Blind, an organization that raises and trains service dogs while supporting hundreds of visually impaired students each year. The design creates a safe, comfortable environment where students and their dogs can live, train and rest together. Each guest suite opens to a private patio with direct access to dog relieving areas, while shared amenities like lounges, patios and fitness spaces offer relief from demanding training schedules. Even the design process reflected the mission, as drawings were produced with Braille and raised lines, ensuring accessibility from the start.Jackie XU Private Residence I A Love Letter to My DogsBy Office of Goldchild, Shanghai, China Designed around the relationship between an owner and her two dogs, this residence treats companionship as its central theme. The project draws on research into canine vision, which differs from human sight by perceiving fewer colors. Using a palette of yellows and blues, architects selected materials such as teakwood, Prussian blue mosaics and grey terrazzo to create spaces seen in similar ways by both humans and dogs. The result is an environment that supports shared perception, turning everyday life into a mutual experience and reinforcing the emotional bond at the heart of the home.Petcart NestBy F+S Designs, Sarjapura, Bengaluru, India As one of Indias first purpose-built pet resorts, Petcart Nest reimagines the idea of boarding with space, comfort and play at its core. Set across two acres of orchards and open land, the design takes advantage of natural contours, reviving a dried pond and building around existing trees. Kennels are larger than most in the country, made with bamboo walls that stay airy and safe for pets. Dogs can run across lawns, sandpits and mounds, or cool off in a pool with gently stepped depths. Eco-friendly systems, from rainwater harvesting to biogas waste treatment, make the retreat as thoughtful as it is fun.House in NukuikitamachiBy MIZUISHI Architect Atelier, Koganei, Japan Designed for a family of four, along with two dogs and three cats, this home turns walls into active living space. Narrow structural walls, called FUTOKORO (meaning recess or pocket in Japanese), double as storage, workspaces, or even small pet rooms depending on need. The northsouth axis stays open for light and airflow, while a large earthen-floored entry extends into a terrace enclosed by a wooden lattice, a detail that keeps pets safe while connecting indoors and out. By shaping everyday circulation around flexible recesses and open courtyards, the house encourages shared life between people, pets and possessions.Paw Pets SpaBy Office AIO, Beijing, China Office AIO rethinks what a pet shop can be, treating animals as the real clients rather than storefront displays. Instead of placing dogs and cats behind glass to attract attention, the design sets them deeper within the space, protected by switchable glass that reduces stress from outside gazes. Separate entrances and zones for cats and dogs prevent unwanted encounters, while a vertical cat play zone adds a layer of territory just for felines. Natural light pours in through skylights and a muted palette tailored to pets limited color perception creates a calm environment.Manhattan Pet Adoption CenterBy Studio Joseph, New York, New YorkAdoption relies on first impressions and this center sets the stage for connection. Housed in a reused 1930s garage, the project combines community presence with a welcoming environment for animals and families alike. A colorful rainscreen of steel fins shifts in tone as people walk by, signaling playfulness while activating the street. Inside, safety and comfort guide the layout: cats are placed at the front, dogs at the rear and glass partitions reduce stress by limiting direct eye contact. With a mural that shifts from dog to cat as you move, the space invites warmth and has already boosted adoption rates.Meow ParlourBy Sonya Lee Architect, New York, New York What began as New Yorks first cat caf has grown into a non-profit dedicated to giving every cat a chance at adoption. Meow Parlours new home reflects that mission with spaces that are as inviting for felines as they are for visitors. A towering wall of oak shelves spells out MEOW, doubling as a climbing wall, while a central wooden tree with hammocks offers perches for lounging cats. Visitors can relax in booths, peek through shelves, or enjoy coffee while cats roam freely. Behind the playfulness lies a serious goal: improved care, better visibility and more successful adoptions.Pampurr Pet WellnessBy office architect9kampanad,Thailand In a fast-changing Bangkok neighborhood, Pampurr Pet Clinic was designed as a cheerful retreat for pets and their owners. A triangular form opens the building to the street, improving visibility while creating a welcoming entry sequence. Inside, translucent corrugated panels in shifting colors define spaces and filter light, giving the clinic a fresh, upbeat character. Mint green accents calm anxious visitors, contrasting with the areas muted palette and setting the clinic apart as a lively landmark. Beyond veterinary care, the design makes waiting less stressful and turns routine visits into a more positive experience for both humans and animals.Healing PetsBy Informal Design, Hangzhou, China Set inside a former toy factory, Healing Pets transforms an old industrial building into a lively destination for pet lovers. The design mixes caf, activity zones and pet care facilities, creating a place where people and animals can share daily life. Natural textures like stone, plywood and gravel concrete shape a durable environment that feels warm and inviting, while ramps and flexible furniture keep the layout friendly for pets of all sizes. Branding and architecture are tightly woven together, from signage to furniture details, turning the space into both a social hub and a supportive community for pets and owners.Architects: Want to have your project featured? • Olena Leliuk: 500px Photographer Spotlight
    iso.500px.com
The 500px Photographer Spotlight invites you to dive into the minds and methods of the incredible photographers who shape our community. Discover the unique journeys, creative insights, and inspiring stories behind the stunning photos we love.Olena Leliuk is a Rome-based, award-winning wedding and fashion photographer. Her distinctive style merges the surreal with the everyday, infused with fashion and flair, resulting in vibrant, imaginative photographs. Discover more about Olenas unique approach and perspective on photography, planning vs spontaneity, and crafting stunning photos that make an impression.Olena, tell us about your journey into photography. How did your initial interest evolve over time?I started taking pictures in the 80s with my fathers analog camera, and I instantly enjoyed the process of creating images. Today, I continue to find inspiration in the work of other talented photographers, which constantly pushes me to explore new creative avenues.Looking back at your earliest photos, what early lessons continue to influence your work today? One of the greatest lessons Ive learned through photography is that while masterpieces can sometimes arise spontaneously, a significant factor in their creation is being in the right place at the right moment.Have you ever revisited an old idea with a new perspective? What changed?I sometimes create a series and then revisit the same concept with a different model. This approach allows for a connected series with shared themes, highlighting the distinctions between the subjects in a unique way, with more experience and skill. What role does planning play in your shoots, and how much do you leave open to spontaneity? My approach to travel photography is largely spontaneous, allowing me to capture authentic moments as they unfold. However, when I undertake shoots in Rome, every detail is meticulously planned to ensure I achieve the precise vision I have in mind. Are there any camera techniques or settings you wish you had mastered sooner? No. I think when it comes to mastering the camera, everything unfolds exactly as its meant to, with each photograph, technique learned, and challenge serving a purpose in the grand design of a photographers evolving skill.Whats something you wish more people knew about being a photographer?Photography is a demanding art form that requires significant control and oversight from the photographer at every stage of the process. From conceptualization to post-production, the photographers vision and technical expertise are paramount. Many people underestimate the amount of work a photographer puts into each photo.Whats in your camera bag that no one would expect?Hairpins, clothespins, and oil control film are essentials in my camera bag. Hairpins are great for taming flyaways during a shoot or securing small props. Clothespins can be used to hold backdrops, secure gels to lights, or even create impromptu clamps. Oil control film is perfect for quickly blotting away shine on a subjects face, ensuring a clean look in the photo.Where do you see the future of photography heading?I see a growing interest in analog photography, and I feel it is likely due to its inherent challenges with analog, the meticulous process, the limited shots per roll, the anticipation of development, all of which can lead to a more rewarding final image. In a time dominated by instant digital gratification and AI-generated art, analog offers a tangible, handcrafted alternative that emphasizes skill, patience, and artistic vision.Do you have a recent shoot or project you would like to share?Yes, these are part of a fashion shoot I did in Rome earlier this year.Read more 500px Photographer Spotlight interviews:Tugba DinThe post Olena Leliuk: 500px Photographer Spotlight appeared first on 500px.

Joshua Commanding the Sun to Stand Still upon Gibeon is an 1816 biblical landscape painting by the British artist John Martin. It depicts an episode from the Book of Joshua, in which the Israelite leader Joshua comes to the assistance of the besieged city of Gibeon, appealing to God to halt the Sun in order to give his army more time to fight by daylight. Romantic in style, it was Martin's breakthrough picture, receiving praise both when it was shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of 1816 at London's Somerset House, and when it appeared at the British Institution the following year. Since 2004, it has been in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.Photograph credit: John MartinRecently featured: Mary Church TerrellAustralian brushturkeyTadej PogaarArchiveMore featured pictures

The section on the product roadmap for Unity 6.1 and beyond starts at 01:30:30 in the recording.Originally posted on 20 September, and updated with more details of the next-gen releases.Unity has previewed its product roadmap and release schedule for the next few versions of its Unity game engine at its Unite 2024 conference.Unity 6, the next long-term support release, will be released globally on 17 October 2024.It will be followed in April 2025 by Unity 6.1, with new features including support for Deferred+ rendering in the GPU Resident Drawer, and support for larger and foldable screens.Development of the next major release generation presumably Unity 7 is also underway, with an open beta due in 2025.The next-gen releases will overhaul the Unity engine core, and introduce new artist tools for shader authoring, rendering, character animation and world building.Unity 6: due for release on 17 October 2024The first part of the roadmap announced at Unite was the release date for Unity 6, the next long-term support release, which will become available globally on 17 October 2024.Many of its key features, including the new GPU Resident Drawer for faster rendering, STP render upscaling, and updates to the URP and HDRP rendering pipelines, are already available in preview. You can read our pick of key graphics features in the Unity 6 Preview here.Unity 6 was previously the point at which the Unity Runtime Fee was due to come into force something that will not now be happening, Unity having just announced that it is scrapping the controversial per-installation fee on higher-earning games created with the engine.Unity 6.1: due in April 2025Unity 6 will be followed in April 2025 by Unity 6.1, an update building on the core Unity 6 capabilities.New features will include support for what Unity is billing as Deferred+ rendering in the GPU Resident Drawer, the behind-the-curtain system for speeding up rendering of scenes with a lot of instanced objects. The release will also introduce support for foldable and large-format screens, and introduce new build targets and profiles, including a target for Facebook Instant Games, and a new profile for Meta Quest VR systems.Next release generation: due in open beta in 2025Unity also announced that it is already a year into development of its next generation of releases.During the keynote, the focus of the release cycle was described as simplicity, iteration and power, marking a fundamental shift in our thinking and approach.Changes will include bringing Unitys Entity Component System (ECS) into the very heart of the Unity engine, integrating Entities with GameObjects. The content pipeline will be reworked to allow more import tasks to run in the background, making it possible to iterate on projects more quickly.New graphical capabilities include virtual texturing, advanced tessellation, and terrain services in the Shader Graph, making it possible to seamlessly blend in meshes. There will also be an all-new animation system emphasising flexibility, animation at scale, and performance across multiple platforms. For scripting, all of the functionality of the Mono backend will be moved to CoreCLR, which will bring big performance gains to both the [Unity] Editor and the runtime. The stable release is still a ways off, but the new version is expected in open beta in 2025.The Unity Engine roadmap session from Unite 2024. The section on the new animation and worldbuilding tools starts at 38:05 in the recording.Updated 26 September 2024: Unity has now posted the recording of Unity Engine Roadmap session from Unite 2024.It covers the ground summarized in the keynote in more detail, including the new animation and world building tools due in the next-generation releases.New character animation systemNew animation features include the option to preview animations without loading them into the scene, a new socket object for weapons and props, and a new animation remapping system.Technical animators get a new underlying graph system along the lines of the Shader Graph, and a reworked hierarchical, layered State Machine. For troubleshooting animations, a visual debugging system makes it possible to rewind gameplay frame by frame, and jump to the relevant point in the animation graph.New world building toolsThe video also shows the new world building workflows for technical artists, emphasising non-destructive editing via procedural rulesets.New capabilities include the option to mask terrain procedurally by altitude or slope angle. There are also demos of the new terrain blending capabilities, and the virtual texturing and tessellation systems, which increase detail in areas of the environment closest to the player.Unified renderer replaces the URP and HDRPHowever, the video also covers changes in the next-gen releases that werent covered in the keynote. For 3D artists, the key changes are in this section, which covers shading and rendering. The old Built-In Render Pipeline will be marked as deprecated during the Unity 6 releases, and is scheduled for replacement by the newer Scriptable Render Pipeline.Within the SRP, the Universal Render Pipeline (URP) for mobile devices and High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) for desktop and console will be replaced by a single unified renderer.Rather than having to create different versions of lights, cameras, materials and effects for different hardware platforms, Unity says that artists will be able to author them once, then configure the rendering logic to scale across all platforms. To test output, it will be possible to switch between rendering configurations via a drop-down within the Unity Editor.New Unified Lit shader and Shader Graph 2 authoring environment For shading, a Unified Lit shader based on the new OpenPBR standard will make it possible to author shaders in a standard way between Unity and your art package.OpenPBR development is being driven by Adobe and Autodesk and will supersede their own individual Adobe Standard Material and Autodesk Standard Surface material specifications.Unity is also working on Shader Graph 2, a complete rebuild of the node-based visual shader authoring environment. The update will add more than two dozen new nodes, update over 50 existing nodes, and make it possible to create custom nodes using block shader code: Unitys new shader format.Workflow improvements include new options for grouping nodes and snapping them to the canvas, and better node search capabilities.Read a summary of the announcements from the Unite 2024 keynote on Unitys blogHave your say on this story by following CG Channel on Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).
