Maison du Brsil | FLC / ADAGPMaison du Brsil, designed by Le Corbusier in collaboration with Lcio Costa, is a significant work within the Cit Internationale Universitaire de Paris (CIUP). Conceived as a residence for Brazilian students studying in France, the building reflects the Brazilian governments commitment to modernist architecture as a cultural and political statement. Initiated in the 1950s, the project aligns with Le Corbusiers broader urban visions and his pursuit of rationalized living spaces that cater to collective habitation.Maison du Brsil Technical InformationArchitects1-2: Le Corbusier, Lucio CostaArea: 2,000 m2 | 21,500Sq. The collaboration resulted in a synthesis of European modernist ideals and tropical architectural sensibilities, creating a structure that balances standardization with contextual considerations.Le Corbusier approached the design of Maison du Brsil as an opportunity to refine his concepts of communal living. The project embodies principles he developed in earlier housing experiments, particularly in the Unit dHabitation. The building was conceived to provide students with a structured yet comfortable living environment, integrating shared and private spaces to foster intellectual exchange.Le Corbusier sought to optimize spatial proportions for human scale through the use of his Modulor system. The design carefully orchestrates programmatic elements, emphasizing functional circulation, natural light, and cross-ventilation. While fundamentally a student residence, Maison du Brsil also serves as a theoretical model of modernist housing, showcasing how architecture can mediate between individual privacy and collective experience.Formal and Spatial CompositionWithin the CIUP, Maison du Brsil occupies a site that necessitated a response to its academic setting. The building engages with the surrounding urban fabric through its austere yet expressive composition. Unlike some of Le Corbusiers more autonomous structures, this project acknowledges its context with a massing strategy that complements adjacent buildings while asserting its modernist identity. The design strategically separates public and private functions, creating distinct zones within the compact footprint. The ground floor, housing communal areas, and administration foster social interaction, while the upper levels, dedicated to student accommodations, emphasize efficiency and order.Maison du Brsil is composed of a rectilinear volume articulated through Le Corbusiers signature approach to concrete expression. The exposed bton brut (raw concrete) exterior, punctuated by brise-soleil and colorful infill panels, establishes a dynamic interplay between mass and lightness. The faade treatment embodies modernist aesthetics and serves climatic and functional roles, reducing glare and optimizing natural ventilation.Inside, the structure embraces a minimalist material palette, with raw concrete juxtaposed against warm timber elements. The contrast enhances spatial legibility and provides a sense of domesticity within the otherwise rigid formal framework. The extensive use of pilotis elevates the structure, creating a shaded entry that enhances ground-level permeability. The buildings internal layout is a direct manifestation of its programmatic intent. The ground floor accommodates communal amenities, including a library, meeting rooms, and social spaces designed to encourage intellectual discourse. In contrast, the upper floors are dedicated to student living quarters, arranged along a central corridor for efficiency.Though compact, the individual rooms are meticulously proportioned according to the Modulor system, ensuring optimal ergonomics. Le Corbusiers emphasis on natural light is evident in the large, strategically placed windows, which illuminate the interiors and frame views of the surrounding campus.Bedroom Lorenzo ZandriStructural Innovation and Technical AspectsMaison du Brsil exemplifies Le Corbusiers commitment to material honesty and structural innovation. The extensive use of reinforced concrete serves aesthetic and functional purposes, providing durability while enabling bold formal gestures. The project incorporates prefabricated elements, demonstrating an early exploration of industrialized construction methods.Despite predating contemporary sustainability discourse, the building integrates several passive design strategies. The brise-soleil system mitigates excessive heat gain, reducing reliance on mechanical coolinga consideration particularly relevant given Brazils climatic influence on the project. Additionally, the open-plan ground floor and carefully oriented windows facilitate cross-ventilation, enhancing thermal comfort naturally. While Maison du Brsil adheres to modernist ideals, its execution faced practical constraints. Budgetary limitations led to material choices and detailing modifications, impacting the projects intended refinement. Furthermore, long-term maintenance of the exposed concrete surfaces has posed challenges, requiring ongoing conservation efforts.Analysis and LegacyMaison du Brsil succeeds in its ambition to create a functional yet architecturally expressive student residence. Its spatial organization effectively balances communal and private needs, while the formal composition articulates Le Corbusiers modernist language with clarity.Maison du Brsil is as a more restrained yet conceptually rich iteration of his housing theories in the broader context of Le Corbusiers oeuvre. It shares ideological parallels with the Unit dHabitation but remains more intimately scaled, making it a compelling case study in modernist residential typology. The project also underscores Le Corbusiers enduring influence on student housing design. Many contemporary academic residences still grapple with the same fundamental challenges of fostering community within dense living arrangements, making the lessons of Maison du Brsil highly relevant today.Maison du Brsil PlansGround Level | Le CorbusierTyp. A key figure in the International Style, he championed principles of standardization, open floor plans, and the integration of light and space, as seen in projects like Unit dHabitation, Villa Savoye, and Chandigarhs master plan. His Modulor system sought harmony between human proportions and architectural scale, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary architecture and urbanism.Credits and Additional NotesDesign Team: Le Corbusier, Lcio Costa, and the Atelier Le CorbusierClient: Brazilian GovernmentEngineers: Vladimir Bodiansky (Structural Engineer)Building Type: Student ResidenceTowards a New Architecture byLe Corbusier

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 15: (L-R) Jared Cannonier punches Gregory Rodrigues of Brazil in a ... [+] middleweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on February 15, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Zuffa LLCOn Saturday at the UFC Apex, Jared Cannonier delivered one of the most memorable performances of his career. The 40-year-old middleweight contender entered as the underdog against Gregory Robocop Rodrigues. The No. 7-ranked Cannonier turned Rodrigues away in the latters attempt to gain a ranking in the UFCs middleweight division with a statement-making fourth-round TKO.Here is a look at the finish:Things didnt start well for Cannonier. Rodrigues dropped him twice in the first round, but the veteran battled back to take control in the second frame. With Rodrigues seemingly showing a second wind in the third, Cannonier took permanent control of the momentum with this titanic elbow that put the Brazilian down.Rodrigues made it out of the round, but Cannonier wasted no time pursuing the finish in the fourth, forcing referee Herb Dean to stop the fight. The win snapped a two-fight losing streak for Cannonier and halted a three-fight win streak for Rodrigues.UFC Vegas 102 Co-Main Event: Youssef Zalal Climbs Into the Top 15After battling his way back into the UFC, Youssef Zalal has been on a tear. Zalal danced circles around No. 10 Calvin Kattar en route to a unanimous-decision victory.Zalals speed and accuracy was superb through the first two rounds. Kattar couldnt catch him. In the third, Zalal went from being elusive to flat-out running. It cost him the round on all three judges scorecards and somewhat dampened his performance.MMA Junkies Nolan King called out a similar sentiment:Still, the win should put Zalal in the Top 15 next week. The loss was Kattars fourth straight.UFC VEGAS 102 MAIN CARD RESULTSJared Cannonier vs. Gregory RodriguesYoussef Zalal def. Calvin Kattar via unanimous decision (29-28x3)Edmen Shahbazyan def. Dylan Budka via first-round KOShahbazyan is experiencing a resurgence. After going through a period when he looked like a bust, he has righted the ship. Hes not on a streak, but he did save himself from a nasty two-fight skid with this explosive KO over Budka.Things are headed the opposite direction for Budka. He has now lost three in a rowevery fight since earning a main roster contract on Dana White Contender Series in September 2023. To make matters worse, he missed weight in his last fight against Andre Petroski in September 2024.Nazim Sadykhov def. Ismael Bonfim via second-round TKOAfter a strong first round, things went downhill for Bonfim. He got caught with a question mark kick in the face. It dazed him and opened a nasty cut. He finished the round, but told his corner he couldnt see between rounds. The doctor stepped in to stop the fight between rounds. Here is a look at the kick that ultimately finished the fight.Andre Petroski def. Rodolfo Vieira via unanimous decision (29-28x3)UFC VEGAS 102 PRELIMS RESULTSJose Delgado def. Connor Matthews via first-round TKODelgado made a splash in his main roster debut. After establishing himself as one of the standouts from Season 8 of Dana White Contender Series, Delgado has proved he will be a factor on the main roster.Heres a look at Delgados finish:Angela Hill def. Ketlen Souza via split decision (29-28x2, 28-29)Rafael Estevam def. Jesus Aguilar via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)Gabriel Bonfim def. Khaos Williams via submission (DArce choke)Bonfim is back. After a disappointing loss to Nicholas Dalby in November 2023, the Brazilian prospect has now won two fights in a row and this vicious submission will only contribute to his restored hype machine.Elijah Smith def. Vince Morales via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)Valter Walker def. DonTale Mayes via submission (heel hook) (R1, 1:17)Walker, the brother of Johnny Walker, is making a name for himself in the UFCs heavyweight division. He easily submitted Mayes with a heel hook. Here is a look at the finish:It was Walkers second straight win by heel hook, and it might have been a costly loss for Mayes. He came into the fight ranked No. 15 with what I believe was a generous ranking.Thatll be gone for sure, with Walker almost certainly replacing him. Mayes may have more issues too, considering he could find himself released following the loss. The UFC has been purging underwhelming heavyweights from the roster over the past few months. Mayes, a loser of his last two fights and three of his last four, seems like a strong candidate for the cut line.Jacqueline Cavalcanti def. Julia Avila via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

Nintendo Switch 2 has an open goal to be the biggest games console ever Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished February 16, 2025 2:00am The perfect opportunity (Nintendo)A reader thinks that the launch timing of the Switch 2 is very much to Nintendos benefit, given the current state of PS5 and Xbox.It sure is interesting times for video games at the moment. PlayStation 5 currently rules the roost, with the cunning plan of doing absolutely nothing, and Xbox is ploughing ahead with a new console, despite the last two both being flops. None of it seems to make sense but then not much does in the world at the moment. What does make sense is that there is a lot of excitement about the Nintendo Switch 2, with a surprising lack of negativity surrounding it, given how the internet usually is and how secretive Nintendo is being. The only thing I can think of which could turn things against them is if the console is unexpectedly expensive or it has a poor launch line-up.I think Nintendo has been in this game long enough not to make that mistake though, which, in my opinion, gives them a huge opportunity for the next generation. Theyve got all this buzz behind them, their games for the Switch have been excellent, and the PlayStation 6 and next gen Xbox arent going to be out for years. They could not ask for a better opportunity.Im not suggesting Nintendo isnt capable of making mistakes. Were less than a decade away from the Wii U, so thats clearly not true, but not only do they have an open goal before them, but they are clearly on a roll when it comes to games and general strategy. Theyd already let the Wii fade away prematurely, before they started on the Wii U, so something was going wrong behind the scenes for a while. Theres no sign of that at the moment though, with the Switch 1 still going strong in its eighth year.We only got a few seconds of Mario Kart 9 footage but it seems to be changing things up quite a bit, so theres no sign of them resting on laurels and every indication that the Switch 2 is going to continue to have ground-breaking games like Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. What makes it even better for Nintendo is the absolute state of their competitors. Xbox Series X/S sales are deader than a dodo and at the same time Microsoft is basically third party, so they are going to be putting absolutely everything they can onto Switch 2.To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a webbrowser thatsupports HTML5videoUp NextNintendo consoles may have been an afterthought for Call Of Duty and other Activision games before, but you can tell Microsoft is going to go all in from the start. Especially with things like mouse support for Diablo. I wouldnt even be surprised if they made Nintendo exclusive games, now wouldnt that be a thing? Then youve got Sony, who are celebrating a good Christmas but have just had another State of Play with virtually no first party games and nothing for this year. Theyre doing well at the moment, because theyve got no competition, but I think the minute the Switch 2 comes out thats suddenly going to change. Not only will the Switch 2 play most third party games but itll have tons of exclusive first party games, which is exactly what people are not getting from the PlayStation 5 at the moment. Sony might be making tons of money right now but theyre fooling themselves if they think people are happy with them or anything theyve been doing the last few years.More TrendingTheyre just lucky that Xbox has been an even bigger shambles, so when a proper alternative arrives I think theyre going to be in big trouble. For the first time since the SNES days Nintendo will not only be the biggest console but the one with just as much (give or take) third party support as its rivals. If the Switch 1 is already on course to be the most successful console of all time I really cant see the Switch 2 doing any worse.By reader Leto Theres still a lot we dont know about the Switch 2 (YouTube)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. Georgia's Savannah and New York's Manhattan have very different approaches to forming and using parks within the city. Savannah adopts the form of an absorbing Pocket Park, placing several small parks at regular intervals to provide nearby residents with everyday rest. In contrast, Manhattan's Central Park is large and in the center of the city, utilized as an integrated park that the entire public shares and enjoys, allowing for various activities and events. This large park integrates the areas of roads within the city's grid into the park, saving unnecessary movement and serving as a large shared and social space that accommodates various activities and events.Save this picture!Save this picture!Mega Floor is a proposal for a new prototype of shared office facilities. Typically, office spaces are arranged around a core, with the four sides facing the outside. Shared and social spaces are relegated to the central area, which is small and environmentally isolated. In the framework of AI-centered 4th industrial revolution office spaces, considering cooperation with various industries, sharing, and synergy, the size of that area and its environmental performance need to be enhanced.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Mega Floor applies the expanded concept of 'sharing' to the plan, cross-section, and external spaces. Around an L-shaped core, office spaces are arranged to the north and east, offering good views for resident companies. Large, unspecified shared spaces (neutral spaces) are planned on the south and west, where sunlight is abundant. On one side of the core, this space is integrated with meeting rooms and focused work areas, and its location is adjusted based on how the inter-floor shared space is utilized.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Ultimately, the hierarchy on each floor plan extends from private and secure areas to public and open spaces, linking resident companies (Private/Secured), shared office space in the core zone (Semi-Private/Semi-Secured), shared spaces (Public/non-secured), and external spaces. This approach is also applied in the cross-section, where shared spaces on two floors are combined to expand sightlines and circulation between floors. This is linked to a void that penetrates the entire floor, regulating lighting, temperature, and humidity, reducing energy consumption while providing a comfortable indoor environment.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Yangjae, Seoul, South KoreaLocation to be used only as a reference.
