• Your avocado toast with eggs may become a breakfast luxury rather than a tasty staple
    www.businessinsider.com
Egg prices are high due to the bird flu.Avocados, already more pricy this year, may follow suit thanks to potential tariffs.Consumers are facing higher breakfast prices as a result.Savor the taste of that avocado toast with eggs because it is about to get more expensive. From avian diseases to tariffs, there are multiple forces at work driving the price increases on your breakfast. In January, the price of eggs hit a record high at an average of $4.95 for a dozen, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The price of eggs rose in part because of the bird flu outbreak that has spread to dairy cattle and, in some cases, to humans. As a result, millions of birds have been killed, making eggs not just more expensive but also harder to find on the shelves.Avocados are likely about to follow suit, though for different reasons. Some 90% of the avocados consumed in the US come from Mexico, a nation that President Donald Trump hit with a 25% tariff on February 1. He later announced the tariffs would be delayed by a month, after which he may still impose them.Tariffs are taxes on foreign goods imported to the US, and they prompt importers to raise their prices to compensate for the added tax and cover their bottom line. As a result, the consumer usually bears the brunt of the price increase.Even pre-tariff, avocados, at an average of $0.91 each, were already 17% more expensive in the first week of February than they were during the same period last year, according to the US Department of Agriculture.Gary Williams, an emeritus professor of agricultural economics at Texas A&M, said avocados are elastic goods, so people will buy them regardless of the price."A tariff on avocado imports is basically a tax on US avocado consumers and most tariff revenue would be paid by US consumers," Williams told BI.Price hikes on breakfast ingredients are already impacting consumers. In New York City, customers are paying more for their breakfast sandwich, the beloved bacon, egg, and cheese. Waffle House customers, meanwhile, will face a $0.50 surcharge for each egg they order.Though it's uncertain how long disease outbreaks and trade wars will last, one thing is certain: some of our favorite breakfasts may soon feel more like luxuries than daily staples.

  • Meta Says Itll Tattle to Trump if EU Keeps Being Mean
    gizmodo.com
By AJ Dellinger Published February 16, 2025 | Comments (0) | Jared Kushner, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Joel Kaplan, and President Donald Trump meet in the Oval Office. Joyce N. Boghosian/Flickr Daaaaaaaaad, the Europeans are picking on me again! Alright, so thats not a direct quote from Metas chief of global affairs Joel Kaplan, who spoke at the Munich Security Conference on Sunday, but its not far off. According to Bloomberg, Kaplan popped over to Europe to let political leaders there know Meta wont shy away from getting President Donald Trump involved if it continues to face crackdowns at the hands of the European Union. Kaplan reportedly told the audience that its up to the Trump administration to decide if EU penalties against American tech companies are unfair, but it wont be afraid to squeal if needed. When companies are treated differently and in a way that is discriminatory against them, then that should be highlighted to that companys home government, Kaplan said during a panel at the conference, per Bloomberg. While we want to work within the confines of the laws that Europe has passed, and we always will, we will point out when we think weve been treated unfairly. Meta has certainly been in the EUs sights, racking up more than $3 million in fines for violations of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) alone, and faces an ongoing investigation that alleges it failed to protect minors on its platform. Earlier this month, Meta announced it would open up its Facebook Marketplace platform to third-party competitors in the EU following an antitrust fine. Then again, Meta could simply stop maintaining monopolistic control over platforms and breaking laws if it doesnt want to deal with the consequences. Just a free idea for Zuckerberg and the gang. Most noteworthy is Kaplan signaling a new posture when it comes to international regulators. The company has certainly expressed its displeasure with the penalties it has faced in the past and has gone so far as to dispute some. But now its trying a new strategy: threatening to cry to Trump. Its not the most surprising move. Zuckerberg has been cozying up to Trump since he started polling well prior to the 2024 election. Following Trumps victory, Zuck made a point to go down and visit him at Mar-a-Lago, started changing platform moderation policies to be more favorable to the Trumpian agenda, and promoted Kaplan, a longtime Republican political operative.<Trump has also given some early signs that he might push back on attempts to punish American firms like Meta. While speaking at the World Economic Forum last month, the President said the EU shouldnt be fining American companies, calling it a form of taxation and saying We have some very big complaints with the EU. It seems Meta picked up on that message and is carrying it forward, wielding it as a warning against regulators who might be considering doing their job. Certainly cant have that, especially not at Metas expense.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Lucas Ropek Published February 14, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published February 14, 2025 By Matt Novak Published February 14, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published February 14, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published February 14, 2025 By Matt Novak Published February 13, 2025

The Educational Park La Carcova project is defined as an ongoing collaborative work experience, extended over time, based on the formation of a university network united by a common goal in a specific territory with numerous unmet basic needs. Since 2019, a national and international network of educational institutions has been established, fostering an experience of exchange and joint production. This initiative revolves around the development of full-scale constructions through collective and community-building workshops, with the active participation of students and social actors. The team at Biblioteca Popular La Carcova serves as the primary liaison within the territory for the project's development. As an educational and cultural institution, it is a key reference point within the community, actively engaged in various initiatives and facing concrete growth needs.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The overall working strategy aligns with the Educational Territory concept established by the Universidad de San Martn (UNSAM), which defines the transfer of knowledge to the most underserved areas within the municipality. Under this framework, a collaborative effort has been formalized with the policies of the Department of Socio-Urban Integration of the Municipality of General San Martn. The process of listening to the needs, current activities, future actions, aspirations, and desires initiated a collective imagination exercise that ultimately shaped the final project. This led to a proposal for the expansion of Biblioteca Popular La Carcova, along with a broader strategy for the development of the Educational Park, enabling its gradual implementation over time. The close relationship with community leaders has facilitated a participatory process, fostering consensus-building and trust among institutional actors and local residents. In 2019, the first structure was built within the territorya wooden framework whose roofing not only provided much-needed shade but also established a gathering place, serving as a symbolic, identity-forming, and emotionally significant landmark for the La Carcova community. The production and assembly of this structure took place through multiple sessions of a collective building workshop, bringing together students, faculty, and community members.Save this picture!Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the project has continued to expand. Later, through the Integrated Collective Construction Workshop, comprised of students and professors, the Santuario del Gauchito Gil was builta fundamental religious landmark for the neighborhood. • Elder Scrolls 6 Could Build on Skyrim's Famous Smithing With a D&D Trick

One of the biggest improvements that Skyrim made to The Elder Scrolls was in Smithing. The Last Dragonborn can create armor, weapons, and accessories, alongside improving them at a forge. The process of Smithing in Skyrimis also intuitive and accessible even at early levels, making it a great way to earn money and gain access to better gear. A few tweaks from Dungeons and Dragons' tool proficiency system could make Smithing in The Elder Scrolls 6 even better, without compromising the improvements that Skyrim made to The Elder Scrolls' Smithing skill in general.
