The Danish National Police are reconsidering their presence on X (formerly Twitter), citing concerns over misinformation and algorithmic changes. For years, X has been an essential tool for Danish police districts to provide real-time updates on incidents and emergencies.Journalists and media outlets have relied on X Pro (previously TweetDeck) to monitor these updates. However, that may soon be coming to an end, as the police recently told Dagbladet Brsen.Looking for a proprietary platformRen Gyldensten, head of communications for the National Police of Denmark, told Brsen that X posed challenges for official communications."When it comes to misinformation and changing algorithms, X has developed in a way that makes it clear that we in the police need to own our own communication," he said.Rather than moving to another social media platform, the police are exploring independent solutions, partly inspired by the Norwegian model. In Norway, police and journalists have co-developed 'Pressklienten,' a closed communication channel designed for direct information-sharing.Danish media companies leaving XMajor media outlets in Denmark, including DR, Ritzau, and Journalisten, have already left X.For some, the issue was declining traffic. For others, it was the lack of content moderation or a shift in platform values, Journalisten.dk reported. More#TechSee Also

  • These researchers used NPR Sunday Puzzle questions to benchmark AI reasoning models
    techcrunch.com
Every Sunday, NPR host Will Shortz, The New York Times crossword puzzle guru, gets to quiz thousands of listeners in a long-running segment called the Sunday Puzzle. While written to be solvable without too much foreknowledge, the brainteasers are usually challenging even for skilled contestants.Thats why some experts think theyre a promising way to test the limits of AIs problem-solving abilities. In a recent study, a team of researchers hailing from Wellesley College, Oberlin College, the University of Texas at Austin, Northeastern University, Charles University, and startup Cursor created an AI benchmark using riddles from Sunday Puzzle episodes. The team says their test uncovered surprising insights, like that reasoning models OpenAIs o1, among others sometimes give up and provide answers they know arent correct. We wanted to develop a benchmark with problems that humans can understand with only general knowledge, Arjun Guha, a computer science faculty member at Northeastern and one of the co-authors on the study, told TechCrunch. The AI industry is in a bit of a benchmarking quandary at the moment. Most of the tests commonly used to evaluate AI models probe for skills, like competency on PhD-level math and science questions, that arent relevant to the average user. Meanwhile, many benchmarks even benchmarks released relatively recently are quickly approaching the saturation point. The advantages of a public radio quiz game like the Sunday Puzzle is that it doesnt test for esoteric knowledge, and the challenges are phrased such that models cant draw on rote memory to solve them, explained Guha.I think what makes these problems hard is that its really difficult to make meaningful progress on a problem until you solve it thats when everything clicks together all at once, Guha said. That requires a combination of insight and a process of elimination. No benchmark is perfect, of course. The Sunday Puzzle is U.S. centric and English only. And because the quizzes are publicly available, its possible that models trained on them can cheat in a sense, although Guha says he hasnt seen evidence of this.New questions are released every week, and we can expect the latest questions to be truly unseen, he added. We intend to keep the benchmark fresh and track how model performance changes over time.On the researchers benchmark, which consists of around 600 Sunday Puzzleriddles, reasoning models such as o1 and DeepSeeks R1 far outperform the rest. Reasoning models thoroughly fact-check themselves before giving out results, whichhelps themavoid some of thepitfallsthat normally trip up AI models. The trade-off is that reasoning models take a little longer to arrive at solutions typically seconds to minutes longer. At least one model, DeepSeeks R1, gives solutions it knows to be wrong for some of the Sunday Puzzle questions. R1 will state verbatim I give up, followed by an incorrect answer chosen seemingly at random behavior this human can certainly relate to.The models make other bizarre choices, like giving a wrong answer only to immediately retract it, attempt to tease out a better one, and fail again. They also get stuck thinking forever and give nonsensical explanations for answers, or they arrive at a correct answer right away but then go on to consider alternative answers for no obvious reason. On hard problems, R1 literally says that its getting frustrated, Guha said. It was funny to see how a model emulates what a human might say. It remains to be seen how frustration in reasoning can affect the quality of model results.R1 getting frustrated on a question in the Sunday Puzzle challenge set.Image Credits:Guha et al.The current best-performing model on the benchmark is o1 with a score of 59%, followed by the recently released o3-mini set to high reasoning effort (47%). (R1 scored 35%.) As a next step, the researchers plan to broaden their testing to additional reasoning models, which they hope will help to identify areas where these models might be enhanced. The scores of the models the team tested on their benchmark.Image Credits:Guha et al.You dont need a PhD to be good at reasoning, so it should be possible to design reasoning benchmarks that dont require PhD-level knowledge, Guha said. A benchmark with broader access allows a wider set of researchers to comprehend and analyze the results, which may in turn lead to better solutions in the future. Furthermore, as state-of-the-art models are increasingly deployed in settings that affect everyone, we believe everyone should be able to intuit what these models are and arent capable of.

  • How This Zombie Deer Disease Turns Deer Into Walking CorpsesAnd Why Theres No Cure
    www.forbes.com
Chronic wasting disease might just be the most terrifying illness youve never heard of. It slowly ... [+] turns the brains of infected deer (and other cervids) into spongy, deteriorating masses, triggering bizarre behavior and, inevitably, a fatal outcome.gettyTheres a reason zombies are so etched in our cultureand why so many movie franchises revolve around the undead. Theres something viscerally unsettling about their unnatural movements and eerie moans, their insatiable hunger for flesh notwithstanding.Thankfully, zombie deer disease, or chronic wasting disease (CWD), only affects cervidsdeer, elk, moose, and their relatives. It hasnt jumped species to infect humans, and it likely never will. But history has shown that prion diseaseslike mad cow diseaseare unpredictable, and chronic wasting disease is already spreading at an alarming rate among wildlife. So what exactly is this bizarre, 100% fatal disease? And how does it turn infected animals into something eerily close to the walking dead?Zombie Deer Disease Is A Textbook Case Of An Animals Biochemistry Working Against ItAt its core, chronic wasting disease is a case of an animals own biology betraying it. The culprits are something called prions. These are essentially misfolded proteins that wreak havoc by triggering a destructive domino effect in the brain. To understand how this works, think of proteins like oil in an engine. Fresh, clean oil keeps everything running smoothly, just as properly folded proteins maintain healthy brain function. But over time, oil degrades and burns, turning into thick sludge. Cleaning out this burned oil takes efforta lot more energy than just maintaining clean oil in the first place.Misfolded prions work the same way. When proteins misfold, they become energetically stuck in that abnormal shapejust like burned oil clings to an engine, turning into a goopy, sticky mess thats difficult to clean. Unfolding and refolding them into the correct shape would take an enormous amount of energymore than the cell can realistically provide.MORE FOR YOUAs a result, these prions dont get repaired. Instead, they persist and interact with healthy proteins, forcing them to misfold as well, spreading the damage in a relentless chain reaction.Once this process begins, theres no stopping it. These rogue prions pile up like toxic sludge, disrupting normal brain function and literally punching holes in tissue until it takes on a spongy appearance. The result? Severe neurological impairment, loss of coordination, bizarre behavior and, inevitably, death. But the real nightmare of prion diseases isnt just how they killits how they spread.Chronic Wasting Disease Prions Are Highly Successful At Infecting New HostsAt first glance, chronic wasting disease prions might seem like a virus or bacteriaan infectious agent with a survival instinct, spreading from one host to another. But prions arent alive. They have no DNA, no metabolism, and no biological motivation to infect. They are nothing more than misfolded proteins, as I mentioned earlier. So why do they spread so aggressively? Unlike viruses or bacteria, which evolve to survive and reproduce, prions have no intentional drivethey simply follow the laws of physics and biochemistry.Unlike traditional infectious agents, which typically spread through bodily fluids or direct contact, CWD prions can persist in an infected animals saliva, urine, feces and even decomposing carcasses. This means an animal shedding prions doesnt need to come into direct contact with another to transmit the diseaseit only needs to exist in the same surroundings.Studies have shown that prions can remain infectious in soil for years, even binding to plant material. When another deer grazes in the same area, it unknowingly ingests the prions and becomes infected, kickstarting the entire process again. Why Theres No Off SwitchMost diseases burn themselves out in one of two ways:The host builds immunity, as with viral infections like measles or bacterial infections like tuberculosis. The pathogen kills its host too quickly to spread further, a balancing act that limits transmission.Prions dont play by these rules. There is no immune response against prions. The body doesnt recognize them as foreign invaders, so it doesnt fight back. And because prions persist in the environment long after an infected animal has died, they dont need a living host to remain a threat. These prions are, in many ways, the perfect biological anomalyan infectious agent that isnt alive but still manages to spread, corrupt and kill with near-perfect efficiency. They dont need a brain, a body, or a goal. Just timeand more proteins to corrupt. And out there in the wild neither is in short supply. What Does Chronic Wasting Disease Look Like?At first, chronic wasting disease (CWD) is almost invisible. An infected deer, elk, or moose can go years without showing a single sign that something is wrong. It moves normally, eats as usual, and blends in with the rest of the herd. But beneath the surface, its brain is already starting to unravel. In the early stages, the symptoms are subtle. The animal might start losing weight, even though its still eating. It may appear slightly more sluggish than usual or seem just a little off.But as months pass, the brain and nervous system start breaking down, and the symptoms become impossible to miss.Erratic movements. The infected animal stumbles, loses coordination, and struggles to hold itself up.Drooling and excessive thirst. The muscles that control swallowing stop working properly, leading to constant salivation.Blank stares and confusion. The animal seems lost, wandering aimlessly and showing no awareness of predators, food, or its own herd.Wasting away. The body keeps deteriorating. No matter how much the animal eats, it continues to lose weight.By the time the disease reaches its peak, the infected animal is barely in control of its own body. The brain is so riddled with holes that basic functionswalking, standing, swallowingbecome impossible. It shudders uncontrollably, collapses and is left helpless in a state of agony. This is not a quick or merciful death. Unlike predators, which kill swiftly, prion diseases drag their victims toward an inevitable endslowly, painfully, and with no possibility of recovery.Zombie Deer DiseaseA Slow But Relentless Spread With No End In SightChronic wasting disease isnt just a rare, isolated phenomenonits expanding, and fast. As of early 2025, the disease has been detected in wild deer, elk, and moose across 36 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces. Its also been found in captive cervid facilities in 22 states and three provinces, showing just how deeply embedded these prions have become in certain regions. In some hotspots, however, the numbers are plain staggering. More than 50% of adult male deer in certain areas have tested positive for CWD. Among adult females, the infection rate can exceed 30%. Even on a broader scale, the numbers are troublingsome states report infection rates above 10% in their deer populations, and localized studies have found that as many as 1 in 4 animals are carrying the disease. And once prions establish themselves in an ecosystem, they dont leave. They persist in the soil, in water sources, and on plantslong after the original infected hosts are gone. Every new animal that grazes, drinks, or simply moves through contaminated areas risks becoming the next victim in an unstoppable chain reaction. For now, chronic wasting disease remains a wildlife crisis, but its relentless expansion raises a daunting question: What happens when an incurable, self-propagating disease is left unchecked in a world where its spread knows no limits? Its hard not to feel pity for the deer suffering from chronic wasting disease. That same empathy is what connects us so deeply to our own pets. • 2 Ways That Playfulness Can Make Or Break Your RelationshipBy A Psychologist
    www.forbes.com
Play doesnt end when you grow up; you grow up when it ends. Heres how to incorporate it healthily ... [+] into your relationship, according to psychological research.gettyWhen you think of the characteristics that uphold your relationship, what comes to mind? For most, buzzwords like honesty, respect and commitment are usually first to arise. However, one of the most key integral factors in keeping a relationship in good shape is also one thats most often overlooked: playfulness. While some couples may disregard this a trivial attribute in the grand scheme of their relationship, recent research published in Scientific Reports says otherwise.Specifically, the study exhibits various different impacts that types of playfulness can have on key facets of a relationshipnamely, attachment styles and experiences of jealousy. Fascinatingly, it was found that certain forms of playfulness are conducive to security in relationships, while others can contribute to different facets of jealousy.Heres a summary of the studys most pertinent findingsand what it may mean for your relationship.Understanding Playfulness In RelationshipsMost people regard playfulness as just joking around or general silliness, but psychologists see it in a vastly different light. Instead, its viewed as an ability to experience and frame situations as entertaining, interesting or intellectually stimulating. In this way, playfulness shapes how we interact with the world around us; it allows us to turn otherwise mundane or upsetting scenarios into something more lighthearted. In turn, a natural consequence of this ability is the impact it can have on how we relate to our romantic partnersin ways that go far beyond just having fun.MORE FOR YOUSpecifically, 2017 research from Personality and Individual Differences breaks down playfulness into four distinct types:Other-directed playfulness. This type involves using humor, teasing or playful banter to connect with others. For example, a partner who uses light teasing to diffuse tension during an argument or playfully reenacts a past memory to spark joy demonstrates other-directed playfulness.Lighthearted playfulness. People with a lighthearted approach to life see challenges with a sense of humor and embrace spontaneity. Imagine a couple stuck in traffic: rather than getting frustrated, one of them decides to turn it into a game of I spy, or begins to make up elaborate stories about the people in the cars around them.Intellectual playfulness. This type revolves around playing with ideas, concepts and problem-solving. Couples who love coming up with creative solutions to daily problems (or imaginary ones) demonstrate intellectual playfulness. They get a kick out of deep, philosophical debates and by challenging each other with daily puzzleslike sudoku, crosswords or even Wordle.Whimsical playfulness. Those high in whimsical playfulness enjoy all things quirky, unpredictable and unconventional; they love adding an element of surprise and novelty to their relationships. For instance, a partner who likes to plan elaborate, themed date nights out of the blue or enjoys dressing up in silly costumes just for fun.According to lead author of the Scientific Reports study, Kay Brauer, in an interview with PsyPost, There is robust evidence that adult playfulness plays a role (no pun intended) for romantic relationships.Notably, she explains, Prior research has shown that playfulness is a strongly desired trait when people are asked about their ideal partner, playfulness is associated with relationship satisfaction in couples, and partners are similar in their playfulnesseven in samples of middle- and older age.Given its various important roles, Brauer and her colleagues were interested in how playfulness extends to the ways couplesboth mixed- and same-genderconnect and with one another on a romantic level.1. Playfulness And AttachmentAttachment styles refer to the ways in which we relate to others based on our past experiences. These patterns, however, are not set in stoneaccording to 2019 research. Naturally, they play an enormously critical role in romantic relationships.Namely, people with attachment avoidance struggle with intimacy and tend to be emotionally distant, while those with attachment anxiety fear abandonment and seek constant reassuranceunlike those with secure attachments, who face minimal fears or struggles.According to the study, people who score high in other-directed, lighthearted and intellectual playfulness were found to have more secure attachment styles. These individuals feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and emotions, which suggests that their relationships are likely more open and trusting. For instance, couples who exhibit lighthearted or other-directed playfulness may be less likely to dwell on small disagreements; they like to keep their relationship free of unnecessary tension. Instead of sulking over a forgotten anniversary, they might turn it into a humorous momentor gently tease their partner, then planning an impromptu celebration instead.Meanwhile, someone who enjoys intellectual playfulness might be more open to discussing conflicts in a way that emphasizes understanding rather than defensiveness. They debate issues using friendly banter, instead of by means of heated arguments. Their playful problem solving-skills make them experts in preventing conflicts from escalating.Whimsical playfulness, on the other hand, did not show a strong link to attachment security. This likely suggests that quirky, unpredictable humor may not always be suited for emotional safety in the same way that other forms of playfulness do. As such, gentle, stable and familiar forms of playfulness seem to be more conducive to a sense of safety and security.2. Playfulness And JealousyJealousy is a natural, yet complex emotion in relationshipsand, contrary to popular belief, it isnt inherently harmful or wrong either. As classical research from the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships explains, jealousy emerges in relationships in three forms:Cognitive jealousy. Suspicious thoughts about a partners faithfulness, which can cast doubt over the security of the relationship itself.Behavioral jealousy. Actions taken to monitor or control a partner due to jealousy, and is usually indicative of controllingness or possessiveness.Emotional jealousy. Feelings of anxiety, fear or insecurity in relation to threats to ones relationship. It is the most natural form of jealousy from an evolutionary perspective, but can become problematic in large doses.Specifically, Brauers study found that all four types of playfulness were linked to lower emotional jealousymeaning that playful individuals tend to experience fewer intense negative emotions when faced with perceived relationship threats. Its probable that playful couples approach their relationship with more confidence and trust; theyre confidently able to search for bright sides and silver linings, even during periods of uncertainty. This, in turn, could make them less likely to interpret ambiguous situations as threatening.Once again, however, whimsical playfulness showed an interesting contradiction. While people high in whimsical playfulness reported lower emotional jealousy, they also experienced higher levels of cognitive and behavioral jealousy. This means they might not get as emotionally upset about threats to their relationship, but they may be more prone to suspicious thoughts or behaviors, like checking their partners phone or attempting to stifle their freedom. This means that a whimsical person might not immediately feel distressed if their partner mentions a flirty coworkerbut later, its possible that their mind might wander. In turn, they may become skeptical of their partners intentions, take actions to keep them close, or even begin to monitor them for reassurance.Interestingly, lighthearted playfulness also had a partner effect: when one partner was highly lighthearted, their partner tended to experience greater cognitive jealousy. This may suggest that one partners carefree, spontaneous attitude might lead a more anxious partner to feel uncertain about where they stand. What This Means for CouplesIf you and your partner use humor, intellect or lightheartedness to connect, theres a good chance that you feel more secure in your relationship. As such, nurturing the spirit of playfulness in your relationship interactions is one of the easiest and most entertaining ways to sustain this sense of connectedness. That said, not all kinds of playfulness can have the same effect. Whimsical playfulnessalbeit fun and engagingcould result in anxious thoughts and behaviors when exhibited out of the blue. A spontaneous surprise getaway might be thrilling for you, but for your partner who values predictability and structure, it could be a little unsettling.Remember, you dont need to be a stand-up comedian or an expert surprise planner to keep playfulness alive in your relationship; fun cant always be forced. Silliness and lightness feels best when it flows naturally, when the moment encourages it. And when it does, dont ignore itbecause play isnt a luxury, its a necessity.Does your relationship lack an air of playfulness? Take this science-backed test, and find out if you and your partner could benefit from it: Relationship Satisfaction Scale

  • Apple is revisiting the idea of placing ads in Apple Maps
    www.digitaltrends.com
In 2022, Mark Gurman warned that Apple was considering putting advertisements in Apple Maps (and in other areas of the iPhone), but that ultimately didnt happen. Now it looks like Apple is revisiting the idea, according to Gurmans most recent Power On! newsletter.Apple already shows ads in the Apple News and Stocks app, and Gurman says Apple is giving this notion more thought. The company said its exploring potential monetization avenues, but there are no concrete plans or a timeline yet.Recommended VideosIn theory, businesses could pay to appear higher in search results or to make their icons appear larger on the map itself. It also opens the door for Apple to offer ad-free services for an additional fee, or perhaps roll that benefit into its existing Apple One subscription.Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsPlacing specific businesses higher in Apple Maps raises the question of how this decision would benefit users. The system would likely work similar to the way Googles ad results. The business would likely show a tag marking it as a sponsored advertisement, with the more relevant search results lower on the page. However, if Apple chooses to use a more traditional ad system, it risks alienating users who have enjoyed an ad-free experience until now. Please enable Javascript to view this contentIn a situation like this, ad blockers wouldnt work. Tools like uBlock and others restrict outside content from being shown on the page, but an ad setup like the one Apple proposes would deliver ads from the same source as its normal content. This is the same way ads work for certain streaming services, and it makes it difficult for an ad blocker to do its job.If Apple does implement this plan, it wont be for some time yet. Gurman says no active engineering work is being done, so it would likely be several months, if not a year, before the ads come to fruition.Editors Recommendations

  • A group fighting the fentanyl crisis says Trump's tariffs could make the problem worse
    www.businessinsider.com
The Trump administration says tariffs on Mexico and Canada will curb fentanyl flow into the US.A harm reduction expert warns that tariffs may increase overdoses by disrupting drug supply.Canada plans retaliatory tariffs, targeting goods from Trump's political base.President Donald Trump introduced tariffs on Mexico and Canada as part of an effort to fight drug trafficking, but a harm reduction advocate says that stopping the regular flow of drugs could make overdoses spike.Trump announced on February 1 that he planned to place 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Trump said at the time that the tariffs were intended to crack down on drug and border policy, particularly to stop the flow of fentanyl into the US.Trump paused the tariffs for 30 days on February 3 after both countries agreed to tougher border control measures, but he still promised "reciprocal tariffs" on goods imported from any country that levies tariffs on the US.In posts on Truth Social, Trump has maintained that "drugs are pouring into our Country, mostly through Mexico, at levels never seen before."Laura Guzman, the executive director of the National Harm Reduction Coalition, told Business Insider that Trump's tariffs could make drug overdoses go up if they are successful in slowing the flow of illegal drugs into the country. Harm reduction generally refers to policies and practices that aim to minimize the negative health, social, and legal effects of drug abuse."The biggest fear I had when I saw the negotiation to postpone the tariffs, immediately, my reaction was, 'that is not going to be good for the folks that are impacted by both the war on drugs, but also by this tainted drug supply,'" Guzman told BI.Guzman said that while slowing the rate of fentanyl entering the country is a good idea, there is still a large amount of fentanyl that is produced inside the US that ends up on the streets. She said that disrupting the flow of drugs can create a situation where addicts are mixing drugs that they don't normally use, which can lead to health risks and death. She said mixing drugs can lead to drug contamination where people might take drugs they aren't familiar with or are unaware that they are taking. "What happens is more dangerous, because then the mixes, the kind of mixes, what it gets mixed with, puts people at risk of not just opiate overdoses, but also increase sedation that results in death," Guzman said.Guzman said that it is common for harm reduction workers to see spikes in overdose deaths in cities after local police do heavy drug takedowns."They do an interdiction, they start arresting, they say how much fentanyl have confiscated, and we very soon start seeing spikes of overdose deaths," Guzman said.Putting "all the eggs on interdiction" People walking past anti-fentanyl campaign posters in Mexico City. YURI CORTEZ/AFP via Getty Images She was also critical of Mexico, saying that government needs to do more to recognize the ongoing fentanyl crisis impacting both countries. Guzman said that there is "a denial" from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration of "the influx of fentanyl from the border."Sheinbaum said in a statement on February 3 that Mexico rejected claims by the Trump administration that Mexico colluded with criminal organizations."If the United States government and its agencies wanted to address the serious consumption of fentanyl in their country, they can combat the sale of narcotics on the streets of their main cities, which they don't do," Sheinbaum said.Naloxone, a drug that is used to reverse opioid overdoses, is a controlled substance in Mexico, where it is considered a psychoactive drug. Guzman said the country's refusal to recognize naloxone as a life-saving drug shows that it is "putting all the eggs on interdiction and denies the fact that fentanyl is also taking lives on the other side of the border."Even as the Trump administration leans into fentanyl trafficking as a leading reason for its new tariffs, they have sometimes struggled to defend it.On NBC's "Meet the Press" on February 2, Kristin Welker asked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem why Canada had been hit with more severe tariffs than China."Why is the United States punishing Canada, one of its closest allies, more than China, where fentanyl originates?" Welker said."We have sent a message this week that we're not just going to enforce our southern border," Noem said. "We're going to put extra resources at that northern border as well. So Canada needs to come to the table."US Customs and Border Protection seized more than 21,000 pounds of fentanyl at the Mexican border last year, according to the agency. The agency seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border.Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced retaliatory tariffs if Trump's tariffs go into effect. Some tariffed goods target Trump's political base, covering items like Florida oranges and Kentucky bourbon. The White House did not immediately return a request for comment from Business Insider.

  • James Bond Caught Up in Weird Ownership Suit
    gizmodo.com
Remember a few months ago when reports alleged Eon and Amazon were arguing over what to do with James Bond? Now, things have gotten weirder, as a separate party is looking to get control of several trademarks related to the popular super-spy. Per The Guardian, Austrian businessman Josef Kleindienst filed several cancellation actions based on non-use related to Bond, meaning he wants to own the James Bond name. Under UK and EU law, you could challenge to revoke a tradermarks ownership if the original owner hasnt done anything with it in its specific area in at least five years. Aside from 2021s No Time to Die, Kleindiesnt argued the name hasnt been used in other classes of goods and services like models of vehicles, computer programmes and electronic comic books, and electronic publishing. Along with the characters name, theres other trademarks that can be challenged here: James Bond Special Agent 007, James Bond 007, James Bond: World of Espionage, and yes, his always-famous catchphrase Bond, James Bond. Why does Kleindienst want James Bond so badly? As the Guardian notes, hes a real estate agent whos reportedly the largest European property developer in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A spokesperson for the company said that hes got plans for what to do with the Bond trademark should he win, and his complaint against Eon noted theres been no Bond restaurants or cocktail lounges, so you can surmise where this is all going. Its actually not too dissimilar from what Eons going through with Amazon: the tech giant wanted to make an entire Bond franchise, but Eon (specifically longtime franchise producer Barbara Broccoli) very much does notwant that. Kleindiensts challenge was filed on January 27, and Danjaq (a US-based company with worldwide licensing rights to James Bond) has two months to argue that ithas used the Bond trademark in these challenged areas. With the developing privacy needs of the family in mind, parent and children's zones are easily interchangeable.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Design decisions were driven by a life cycle assessment and passive solar: This led us to a simple and modest addition moved to the side, balancing the building with open space. The compact structure minimizes material use. This building is not overglazed: doors and windows are sized and placed strategically to balance natural light, optimize airflow, and provide easy access to nature. The pond outside the lounge acts as a natural cooler, the winter garden serves as a thermal buffer.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Above the dining area, a netted void functions as a thermal chimney. The pergolas provide shade, the planters near the windows offer easy access to edible gardens and reduce radiant heat, and the low embodied carbon stone flooring optimizes thermal comfort. Collectively, these measures reduce the building's global warming potential by 79% against the Australian average. Homes should have an identity and this home forms its identity from drawing in and giving back to the neighborhood.Save this picture!Save this picture!Social impacts were important considerations. To invite engagement with the street, we opened the front and extended the verandah. Upstairs is designed for curated views of neighboring trees and buildings. The new addition picks up a traditional building form that dissolves into an articulated timber structure, forming a transition between building and garden. It honors the existing architectural context while seamlessly integrating a contemporary aesthetic that both complements and enriches its surroundings.Save this picture!Life Cycle is the result of an engaging dialogue between clients and our team, a collective effort that is more than just an add-on to a house; it's a thoughtful and very personal articulation of domestic spaces that are functional, comfortable, and warm. The learnings from Life Cycle guide the firm's sustainable design approach and construction practice. They support our commitment to helping clients adopt a resource-conscious, community-focused lifestyle that re-evaluates suburban living.Save this picture! As the owners, Simon and Chris, described it in their own words: 'Our new home is nurturing; warm; and welcoming. It gives a calm comfort and joy to how we live through its beauty and connection with nature. It gathers the family for meals and music, while its nooks let us each do our own thing. It reaches out to the street, drawing in friends and neighbors for fun and play. It is a joy in our lives.'Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMaterialWoodMaterials and TagsPublished on February 16, 2025Cite: "Life Cycle House / Steffen Welsch Architects" 16 Feb 2025.
